- 0:00Around Chicago, there are tales of a pale and mysterious woman
- 0:05whose presence has entranced people for nearly a century.
- 0:11But just who was she, and did she even exist?
- 0:15Tons of people over the years believe that she did, but to
- 0:19others, she's just the culmination of multiple
- 0:23overactive imaginations. The truth, ultimately, will be
- 0:27up to you to decide. This is the haunting legend of
- 0:32Resurrection Mary of Illinois. Let me first paint the picture
- 0:48for you. It's late on a moonless night,
- 0:53and you find yourself travelling down a narrow Rd. as darkness
- 0:58envelops you, each shadow reaching for you, twisting and
- 1:04turning to touch you, your adrenaline spikes.
- 1:10Is this simply the creation of the human mind, or is there
- 1:14something more than meets the eye?
- 1:18This is what people tend to experience when they head down
- 1:20the road to a place known as Resurrection Cemetery, located
- 1:25outside of the hustle and bustle of Chicago.
- 1:29Our story begins there in 1979 when the cab driver finds
- 1:34himself lost travelling down this very same Rd. late 1
- 1:38evening. As the road continued to wind
- 1:41and curve, the middle-aged man pressed forward, hoping to find
- 1:46some sort of a sign that could lead him back to where he was
- 1:49supposed to be. As he drove on the right hand
- 1:54side of the road, he sees the figure of a woman quickly
- 1:59hitting the brakes and slowing down to ask where he can go to
- 2:02get out of here. He approaches her quickly.
- 2:06Rolling down the window. He explains that he's lost and
- 2:10tells the young lady that he'd be happy to give her a lift
- 2:13anywhere she wants to go, free of charge if she can help him
- 2:17get back to town. Glancing at him almost in a
- 2:21dreamlike state, the woman doesn't say a word.
- 2:25She simply makes her way into the back seat of the taxi.
- 2:29Roughly a mile in front of where the two were was the entrance to
- 2:34Resurrection Cemetery. At around 400 acres,
- 2:38Resurrection is a massive cemetery.
- 2:41It opened in 19 O 4 to serve large Polish American
- 2:45communities on Chicago's Southwest Side and nearby
- 2:49suburbs. Nearly 190,000 souls are buried
- 2:53at Resurrection among 44 cemeteries operated in the city
- 2:59and suburbs by the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago.
- 3:04As the two continue to drive as they approach the cemetery
- 3:08gates, the woman out of nowhere asked the man to stop the
- 3:12vehicle, asking her why she would want to stop there at such
- 3:16a time. But also being a man of his
- 3:18word. He pulled the car over.
- 3:22But as he glanced back to where the woman had been, she had
- 3:26simply vanished. Little did he know this very
- 3:31night, as he wandered lost on the stretch of Rd. that he would
- 3:35meet one of Chicago's most famous ghosts, the spectral
- 3:39woman known as Resurrection Mary.
- 3:44According to many, Resurrection Mary is one of the most
- 3:48believable ghost stories that exists simply due to the amount
- 3:53of unrelated people over a vast stretch of years who have said
- 3:57to have encountered her. According to Richard Growe, a
- 4:02local historian, the people I've met who have said they have had
- 4:05an experience with Resurrection Mary have been surprisingly
- 4:09level headed. They tend to be primarily blue
- 4:12collar middle class types who have no history of outrageous or
- 4:18any other kind of major claims as far as we can tell.
- 4:23The earliest account of an encounter with this being came
- 4:26from a man named Jerry Paulus who has since taken his own trip
- 4:30to the grave. The year was 1939 and on any
- 4:35given night the youth of Chicago filled the dance halls.
- 4:40Jerry at the time considered himself a ladies man of swords
- 4:44and was looking for a dance. From across the dance floor.
- 4:49He spotted what he described as one of the most beautiful women
- 4:53that he had ever seen. In 1986, when he was 72, he gave
- 4:59a taped recounting of his experience, and in this
- 5:02description he described the woman as being about 5 foot
- 5:06seven, having blonde hair that curled on either side of her
- 5:10head, having dazzling blue eyes, and wearing an exceptionally
- 5:15fancy white dress for that time period.
- 5:19As he asked for a dance, Jerry took the woman to the dance
- 5:22floor and the two began to talk. Although she didn't speak much,
- 5:28seeming rather shy, Jerry was able to uncover that her name
- 5:32was Mary and that she lived on the South side of Chicago in a
- 5:37small apartment on Damon Street. When the final song was played
- 5:43and those present began to disperse, Jerry offered Mary a
- 5:47ride home, to which she accepted.
- 5:50As the two made their way towards the South side of
- 5:53Chicago, where the woman had said that she lived, she
- 5:56suddenly asked him to take a detour, asking him to go down a
- 6:00long and winding Rd. known as Archer Rd.
- 6:04Jerry obliged, turning onto the road, and as they got several
- 6:08miles into their trip, Mary suddenly asked Jerry to stop the
- 6:12car, trying to ask her why since the area seemed to be fairly
- 6:17desolate aside from a small gate.
- 6:19From what he could see, the two would step out of the car, or
- 6:23Mary would tell him that she needed to get out of there,
- 6:27Confused, but wanted to make sure she was where she needed to
- 6:30be. Jerry agreed.
- 6:33She then told him to stay right there, and that she'd be right
- 6:36back. She then began to make her way
- 6:39towards the gate, where, before the young man's eyes, she simply
- 6:44vanished. The road we first described and
- 6:48the road I described in this tale are one and the same, and
- 6:53the gate was the entrance to Resurrection Cemetery.
- 6:58Perplexed and unsure of what to make of this encounter, Jerry
- 7:02waited for the woman, but eventually would get back in his
- 7:06car and drive home for the night.
- 7:10The following day, remembering the address Mary had told him,
- 7:14he decided to take a trip to Damon St. and upon arriving, he
- 7:19found the apartment with little trouble.
- 7:23As he approached the door before he had a chance to knock, it
- 7:27swung open, revealing an older blonde haired woman.
- 7:32She began to ask him, in a thick Polish accent, if she could help
- 7:36him. Jerry explained to her that he
- 7:38was looking for a woman named Mary.
- 7:41The older woman simply glanced at him as if she had seen a
- 7:45ghost herself within a few moments, she said, You must be
- 7:50mistaken, there's no one who lives here by that name.
- 7:55As she went to close the door, Jerry happened to glance past
- 7:59her and see a framed photograph sitting on a table.
- 8:03It was the very same woman he'd given a ride to the night
- 8:06before. Explaining to her that this was
- 8:09the Mary that he was looking for, the woman started to become
- 8:13upset. With tears in her eyes.
- 8:17She told him that that's impossible, that the woman was
- 8:21her daughter, and that Mary had been dead for five years.
- 8:28Not wanting to further distress her, Jerry thanked her for her
- 8:31time and left. Although the encounter this day
- 8:36as well wasn't all what Jerry thought it was going to be,
- 8:39simply served to ignite the flame of curiosity as just who
- 8:44this mysterious woman was. Jerry would ultimately pass away
- 8:48himself in 1992, never truly having known who he had
- 8:54encountered all those years ago. Through lots of research,
- 8:59Richard believed he had tracked down the identity of
- 9:02Resurrection Mary. The woman's real name was Mary
- 9:06Brigole, and her demise was all too soon and tragic.
- 9:13She had been killed in a traffic accident one Saturday night
- 9:17following an outing at a dance hall in 1934, just one month
- 9:24before her 21st birthday. Her family was devastated and,
- 9:30as was the most common practice at the time, laid her to rest at
- 9:35Resurrection Cemetery, burying her and her favorite gown, a
- 9:41fancy white dress and her blonde hair as she liked them in curls.
- 9:49Over the years, her spirit has allegedly been seen by people
- 9:53time and time again, from inside dance clubs to bars to taxis.
- 10:01Others have seen her simply by strolling past the cemetery
- 10:04after dark, or like the next people will discuss standing on
- 10:09the side of the road. In 1980, a woman named Claire
- 10:14Rudnicki, her husband Mark, and two friends were driving down
- 10:19Archer Rd. On their way home from a night
- 10:22out of fun and relaxation. With Mark behind the wheel,
- 10:27Claire and the passenger seat, and their two friends in the
- 10:30back, Mark and Claire have their windows open.
- 10:35As they drove down the road, Claire noted that she simply
- 10:38watched the passing landscape on her side of the car.
- 10:43Not too far ahead of them, the group spotted a girl walking on
- 10:47the side of the road, but this wasn't any ordinary looking
- 10:51person. She appeared not only to be
- 10:55emitting light, but she was wearing an old looking white
- 10:59dress. Everyone in the car except for
- 11:02Mark began to panic, pleading with him not to stop the car.
- 11:08Mark, who had let off the gas and started slowing down, was
- 11:13able to get a better look at the figure, and he would later
- 11:17bizarrely say that the woman had no face.
- 11:23It was. If there was a black void where
- 11:25her face should have been, they ended up passing.
- 11:29The woman and the other passengers, including Mark's
- 11:32wife, pleaded for him not to turn around, but curiosity
- 11:37forced his hand. He turned around and went back.
- 11:42But to everyone else's relief, whoever or whatever this thing
- 11:48was, was gone. Encounters like these since
- 11:53Mary's passing have become all too commonplace and still exist
- 11:58even to this day. But what is Resurrection Mary
- 12:02exactly? A young woman who met her demise
- 12:05too early, who now wanders aimlessly in an attempt to find
- 12:09her way back home? A myth over time that has gained
- 12:13traction due to people wanting to be part of something larger
- 12:17than themselves? Or is it an entity masquerading
- 12:21as a young woman in efforts to communicate with those who dwell
- 12:25here? And if so, why all these
- 12:30questions and more we may never have answers to because those
- 12:35answers have long since been lost to the confines of a tomb.
