- 0:02Speaker 1: Now pitching now joining FT for a little combo. It
- 0:06Speaker 1: is Brad Keller and he is fresh off signing with
- 0:08Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Phillies on a two year contract. Right, great
- 0:11Speaker 1: to have you on the show. Thanks for the time
- 0:13Speaker 1: and congratulations on the deal. Can you give us a
- 0:16Speaker 1: little insight on how it all went down with the
- 0:18Speaker 1: Philly recruiting process that apparently didn't involve Philly's favorite Eric
- 0:23Speaker 1: Kratz right above you on the screen.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for having me, guys. Yeah, no, it was.
- 0:29Speaker 2: It was really cool. It was.
- 0:30Speaker 3: I had good conversations with those guys. Had a Zoom call.
- 0:33Speaker 3: I was actually on vacation.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I was on it. We had a family vacation down
- 0:37Speaker 2: in the Keys and it's kind of my agent call.
- 0:40Speaker 3: He is like, hey, man, like this is kind of
- 0:42Speaker 3: picking up some steam, Like are you able to you know,
- 0:44Speaker 3: step away for a little.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Bit and get on the phone. I was like, yeah, sure.
- 0:47Speaker 2: So some jumped on the zoom call front office and
- 0:50Speaker 2: killed caught him and those guys, and you know, really
- 0:53Speaker 2: really liked what.
- 0:53Speaker 3: They had to say, and you know, some things that
- 0:56Speaker 3: were brought up pitching wise that I really enjoyed. And yeah,
- 0:59Speaker 3: next you know, I was on a flight headed a
- 1:01Speaker 3: Philly to get all my physicals done. So it was
- 1:03Speaker 3: great though now it was way more enjoyable process this
- 1:06Speaker 3: time than you know, years past.
- 1:08Speaker 4: How was that process different than other teams calling you know,
- 1:12Speaker 4: or did they all just did they all make the
- 1:13Speaker 4: same kind of pitch or was there no other pitch
- 1:16Speaker 4: in the Phillies just said boom, we're going right into it.
- 1:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:20Speaker 2: No, I think you know, everyone you know that called
- 1:22Speaker 2: me kind of had similar pitches. You know, a lot
- 1:24Speaker 2: of it.
- 1:25Speaker 3: You know, kind of made a big adjustments from starting
- 1:27Speaker 3: to relieving and you know, made a big you know,
- 1:31Speaker 3: bilo jump and some you know, mechanical things that a
- 1:33Speaker 3: lot of them were just kind of asking questions on
- 1:35Speaker 3: you know, the process that went into that thought process,
- 1:37Speaker 3: and you know how I felt like it did throughout
- 1:40Speaker 3: the season and so every every you know, organization that
- 1:43Speaker 3: I talked to kind of had similar questions and then
- 1:46Speaker 3: more of just like a recruiting pitch on you know,
- 1:48Speaker 3: where they stood in an organization where there's you know,
- 1:51Speaker 3: looking to go and things like that. So they were
- 1:54Speaker 3: all really good conversations. But you know, I think one
- 1:57Speaker 3: of the biggest things that you know, a true. My
- 2:00Speaker 3: decision was just last year I got a good taste
- 2:02Speaker 3: of winning, and I really haven't had a you know,
- 2:05Speaker 3: taste of winning in most of my career. So after
- 2:07Speaker 3: last year, it was like, you know, get the experience
- 2:10Speaker 3: of postseason and things like that. It's just, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 3: something that I s tried, I want to do every
- 2:14Speaker 3: single year, and I feel like the Phillies were a
- 2:16Speaker 3: really good opportunity for that.
- 2:18Speaker 6: Bron what changed for you?
- 2:20Speaker 7: You were a starter most of your career and then
- 2:22Speaker 7: in Chicago last year, I mean you blossomed.
- 2:24Speaker 6: Into an elite, elite reliever. What change?
- 2:27Speaker 7: What did you make a difference in your pitch type?
- 2:29Speaker 7: Did you change your arsenal? Did you change the delivery?
- 2:32Speaker 7: Did you change some grips?
- 2:33Speaker 6: What changed?
- 2:34Speaker 7: Because you were awesome for the cuts. As much as
- 2:36Speaker 7: it pays me to say.
- 2:36Speaker 3: That, thank you, you know, I think first and foremost
- 2:40Speaker 3: with just you know, getting healthy, coming off for thrascic
- 2:43Speaker 3: alegy syndrome, going through that, you know, down that path,
- 2:46Speaker 3: doing the surgery, all that fun stuff. Finally feeling healthy,
- 2:50Speaker 3: finally feeling one, having a full off season to not
- 2:52Speaker 3: have to worry about, you know, health, just going straight
- 2:55Speaker 3: into the season, We're focusing on some mechanical things that
- 2:58Speaker 3: you know, I felt, I felt was going to be better official,
- 3:00Speaker 3: and yeah, I mean I think there was a big change.
- 3:03Speaker 3: I honestly, I overhauled basically everything. You know, I kind
- 3:06Speaker 3: of I've always been really long armed, so kind of
- 3:09Speaker 3: shorten that up.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Be a little bit more deliberate, kind of using my legs.
- 3:12Speaker 3: A lot more, you know, as I feel like I'm
- 3:15Speaker 3: just like squatting to the mountain now instead of just
- 3:17Speaker 3: kind of drifting. And then you know, added a sweep
- 3:20Speaker 3: for last year that was really beneficial, really helped me
- 3:23Speaker 3: strike out a lot more guys than I have in
- 3:25Speaker 3: the past. So a little bit of everything, honestly. So
- 3:27Speaker 3: it's a completely overhaul of, you know, everything I've done
- 3:30Speaker 3: my own career.
- 3:30Speaker 4: So when you see a guy, when you see a
- 3:33Speaker 4: guy do what you did, all the things you just said,
- 3:36Speaker 4: you go to a new team on you know, a
- 3:38Speaker 4: nothing contract and get a massive contract the next year,
- 3:42Speaker 4: you really prove yourself.
- 3:44Speaker 6: Does it hurt at all that you've.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Seen a lot of Cubs or are the Cubs sign
- 3:49Speaker 4: a lot of relievers and you're like, wait a minute,
- 3:51Speaker 4: you guys had a front row seat to my resurgence
- 3:55Speaker 4: and the fact that I helped you guys win and
- 3:57Speaker 4: you're like, wait a minute, Like I thought you guys
- 4:00Speaker 4: really liked me, and does it put you on another
- 4:03Speaker 4: level then of being like, all right, well, the Cubs
- 4:05Speaker 4: aren't going to beat the Phillies this.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Year, you know, you know, I love my time there
- 4:11Speaker 3: that I you know, it credited them to everything this season,
- 4:14Speaker 3: you know, like I said, my first taste of postseason,
- 4:16Speaker 3: first taste of winning throughout the whole season. So I
- 4:19Speaker 3: have no bad letter it will against them at all.
- 4:22Speaker 3: I mean, it was probably by far my favorite, you
- 4:24Speaker 3: know season of playing baseball. You know, I tell everybody
- 4:27Speaker 3: is I had so much fun. The clubhouse was unbelievable,
- 4:30Speaker 3: the guys in there, you know, support staff all the
- 4:32Speaker 3: way to the coaching staff, for the players. Everything was
- 4:35Speaker 3: you know, big league as it gets. So yeah, as
- 4:38Speaker 3: far as that, you know, I I loved it over there,
- 4:41Speaker 3: and like I have no ill will but just looking
- 4:44Speaker 3: forward to the opportunity with the with the Phillies. You know,
- 4:46Speaker 3: I've heard a lot of positive things over there as well,
- 4:48Speaker 3: and guys that played for both have said it's you know,
- 4:50Speaker 3: very very similar situation. Very similar set up over there.
- 4:53Speaker 3: So it was it was fun in Chicago. I had
- 4:56Speaker 3: a great time as my favorite city. But like I said,
- 4:59Speaker 3: looking forward to Philly.
- 5:01Speaker 6: All right before I had a different question. Can we
- 5:04Speaker 6: show that again?
- 5:05Speaker 7: Can we show that tweet you sent out, because first
- 5:07Speaker 7: of all, there's some lies in that tweet.
- 5:09Speaker 6: Okay, you just.
- 5:09Speaker 7: Told some lies, but you just you said say Chicago
- 5:12Speaker 7: is a great the best city. I agree with that far,
- 5:14Speaker 7: but there were some lies in that tweet. Thank you
- 5:16Speaker 7: for the electricity Wrigley Field, Thank you for there was
- 5:19Speaker 7: a lot you know, beer snakes. You didn't like, look
- 5:21Speaker 7: at this.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Sport energy, What do we like?
- 5:25Speaker 7: Why do you lie to the people and tell him
- 5:26Speaker 7: you know this and that? Like come on now, Brad, like,
- 5:29Speaker 7: let's not talk about this.
- 5:32Speaker 2: No, I mean it was was unbelievable. I mean Wrigley
- 5:35Speaker 2: was every single day.
- 5:36Speaker 3: I mean we play all the day games and everything
- 5:38Speaker 3: sold out in me I said it all Summer's like,
- 5:40Speaker 3: does no one work on Fridays in Chicago?
- 5:42Speaker 6: It's have you ever heard have you ever heard Lee
- 5:46Speaker 6: Ilia's rant? I know? Okay, So there's a manager for
- 5:51Speaker 6: the name. He was a Phillies legend. He's a Phillies legend.
- 5:58Speaker 7: He said, eighty five percent of the world works, the
- 6:01Speaker 7: other fifteen percent come out to day baseball.
- 6:03Speaker 6: There you have cup.
- 6:04Speaker 7: Fans some in one quote, right, especially on Friday, right.
- 6:09Speaker 2: So it's insane. Yeah, it's insane.
- 6:12Speaker 6: I agree. I agree.
- 6:13Speaker 7: All right, let's let's get back to the now, the truth. Okay,
- 6:16Speaker 7: do you like starting or relieving better? Because you came
- 6:19Speaker 7: up and you were a starter first forever and now
- 6:21Speaker 7: you've had success as a reliever, which one do you
- 6:23Speaker 7: like better?
- 6:25Speaker 3: You know, That's kind of what I told teams this
- 6:27Speaker 3: ausus is like I liked relieving, but I absolutely loved
- 6:31Speaker 3: uh you know, or I like starting. I absolutely loved relieving, though,
- 6:34Speaker 3: Like there was nothing like the adrenaline spike that they
- 6:36Speaker 3: get whenever they you know, the phone rings and you're
- 6:39Speaker 3: coming in a tight situation. You're just kind of just clear,
- 6:43Speaker 3: clear mind, go out there and just here's my best stuff.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Like instead of sometimes you get caught up when you're
- 6:47Speaker 3: starting trying to like set pitches up and try to
- 6:49Speaker 3: do this, you kind of be a little bit more,
- 6:52Speaker 3: you know, a more methodical approach to pitching. I guess
- 6:57Speaker 3: first bull finishes here. It is Boom go after him.
- 7:00Speaker 3: You know, it was so much fun. And plus I
- 7:03Speaker 3: had a lot of good group, a group of guys
- 7:05Speaker 3: down there that I leaned heavy on, guys that have
- 7:07Speaker 3: been there, done that, pitching the biggest moments, and you know,
- 7:10Speaker 3: I asked them tons of questions and they helped me
- 7:12Speaker 3: out a ton. So they obviously made it a lot
- 7:15Speaker 3: of fun and kept the bullpen light.
- 7:16Speaker 2: And yeah, I mean, I love relieving. It was so fun.
- 7:22Speaker 5: Yeah, your stuff played up.
- 7:24Speaker 2: It was great.
- 7:24Speaker 1: You know, we watched you all year just shove. Like
- 7:26Speaker 1: AJ mentioned, one of the best relievers in baseball this
- 7:28Speaker 1: past season. So if I take you back to the
- 7:31Speaker 1: later part of your KC days, do you wish that
- 7:34Speaker 1: you latched on with a role like this sooner? Did
- 7:37Speaker 1: you guys ever talk about this, because I'm sure there
- 7:39Speaker 1: was a point in those last few years with KC
- 7:41Speaker 1: where you like, my stuff's good, but you just weren't
- 7:43Speaker 1: getting the results that you wanted.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean we talked about it.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Actually, I think I got moved to the bullpen the
- 7:49Speaker 3: last month of the season in twenty two. I believe
- 7:51Speaker 3: that was but yeah, I mean I still felt like
- 7:54Speaker 3: I was able to start, and I still felt like
- 7:56Speaker 3: I was able to do. And then you know, I
- 7:58Speaker 3: still batt on some injuries stuff, and then even twenty three,
- 8:01Speaker 3: ultimately the Tos just put me out for the whole season.
- 8:04Speaker 3: But you know, I still feel like I'm capable of starting.
- 8:07Speaker 3: But like I said, after having a full taste, instead
- 8:10Speaker 3: of being on that line that we were kind of
- 8:13Speaker 3: teetering on when I was with the with the Royals
- 8:15Speaker 3: the last couple of years, there fully going into season
- 8:18Speaker 3: fully committing to the bullpen and being like, all right,
- 8:20Speaker 3: this is where I am. This where instead of like
- 8:22Speaker 3: coming constantly having that you know, doubt in the background,
- 8:25Speaker 3: minds like am I still going to start?
- 8:27Speaker 2: Or and what could I start? You know, it was
- 8:28Speaker 2: just fully committed to the bullpen.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I think that was just so much better mentally to
- 8:31Speaker 3: go out there and know, you know, this is where
- 8:33Speaker 3: I am, this is my position. Let's you know, let's
- 8:35Speaker 3: just go do it. So yeah, I mean we talked
- 8:38Speaker 3: about it a little bit. Like I said, I spent that
- 8:40Speaker 3: one month, but I didn't really do too well, I
- 8:43Speaker 3: don't think. But I did my beginning of my career
- 8:45Speaker 3: when I when I you know, made the team in
- 8:47Speaker 3: twenty eighteen, My first two months were in the bullpen,
- 8:50Speaker 3: and that was at a time where I thought the
- 8:52Speaker 3: bullpen was my avenue to.
- 8:53Speaker 2: The big leagues.
- 8:53Speaker 3: And I threw really well doing that, and so I
- 8:56Speaker 3: feel like once I was like committed to it, and
- 8:58Speaker 3: kind of that's how I felt this, you're just like
- 9:00Speaker 3: fully committed a bull fan. I feel like I was
- 9:02Speaker 3: able to kind of just stay in that mentality, stay
- 9:05Speaker 3: in that mode of just like getting ready every day,
- 9:08Speaker 3: go out there and do your job.
- 9:10Speaker 4: How did you like your time in Kansas City? Because
- 9:12Speaker 4: sometimes everyone's like, well, that's the team you got first,
- 9:14Speaker 4: got called up with, you must love them. How did
- 9:18Speaker 4: you like your time when you were there?
- 9:20Speaker 3: I mean, I really enjoyed it. You know, they gave
- 9:22Speaker 3: me the opportunity they you know, rule five pick. They
- 9:25Speaker 3: gave me a chance to to, you know, give my
- 9:27Speaker 3: first dast to the big leagues, and you know, they
- 9:30Speaker 3: got a couple opening day starts. There, got a lot
- 9:32Speaker 3: of starts on under my belt there. I really enjoyed it.
- 9:35Speaker 3: The city was great, the fans, they were great. The
- 9:37Speaker 3: only thing that I didn't love was that we weren't
- 9:40Speaker 3: really winning, and it just kind of felt like a
- 9:43Speaker 3: lot of turnover. While I was there, we had you know,
- 9:44Speaker 3: three managers, a couple of gms to two different owners.
- 9:48Speaker 3: So it's like a lot of turnover during my time there.
- 9:52Speaker 3: But the group of guys in the clubhouse are some
- 9:54Speaker 3: of my best friends to this day. Still talk to
- 9:56Speaker 3: them all and even in fancy football on the whole nine.
- 9:59Speaker 2: So I really enjoyed my time there. I liked it
- 10:02Speaker 2: a lot.
- 10:02Speaker 3: And like I said, they you know, my first steps
- 10:04Speaker 3: to the big leagues, and you know, after going to
- 10:07Speaker 3: a couple of different organizations, you really see the difference
- 10:10Speaker 3: from there to to other places.
- 10:12Speaker 2: And you know from my friends they are still there.
- 10:16Speaker 3: You know, they said a lot of a lot has
- 10:17Speaker 3: changed from there from my time left now.
- 10:20Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean I liked it.
- 10:22Speaker 3: I can't say it was great, especially you know, first
- 10:24Speaker 3: first get in the big leagues where you know you're
- 10:25Speaker 3: gonna fail a lot. It was like a it was
- 10:27Speaker 3: a perfect little, perfect spot to be all.
- 10:30Speaker 7: Right, do you have your walkout music ready? Because you've
- 10:33Speaker 7: you've seen durand in Philly right with the Durantelo's and
- 10:37Speaker 7: they got they do the whole thing and they get
- 10:39Speaker 7: the light show. Do you have a walkout Plan because
- 10:41Speaker 7: his is hard top. So when you first time you
- 10:44Speaker 7: run out of the bullpen at the bank, are they
- 10:46Speaker 7: going to have some Florida Gator music playing when you
- 10:50Speaker 7: break up through the bullpen or what?
- 10:52Speaker 2: No?
- 10:53Speaker 3: No, no, no, I mean I I have no idea,
- 10:55Speaker 3: but Durand is by far the coolest entrance I've ever seen.
- 10:58Speaker 3: I've watched it for a while back when he was
- 10:59Speaker 3: at the Plans and then watch it, you know, this
- 11:01Speaker 3: year a couple of times. Just there's nothing beating that.
- 11:05Speaker 3: That's just one of the most electric things I've ever seen.
- 11:08Speaker 3: It'd be cool to, you know, maybe get a maybe
- 11:10Speaker 3: get a video one day. I think I had one
- 11:12Speaker 3: towards the end of the season last year with the
- 11:14Speaker 3: Cubs in the postseason. My parents filmed it one time.
- 11:17Speaker 3: It's the only reason I know. But now it's, uh,
- 11:20Speaker 3: that'd be cool. As of right now, I have nothing,
- 11:23Speaker 3: nothing that I'm just perfect.
- 11:25Speaker 7: You know why, because I say this all the time.
- 11:28Speaker 7: The setup guys they don't get an entrance. Only the
- 11:30Speaker 7: closer gets it. That was the perfect answer. Yes, thank you,
- 11:34Speaker 7: thank you for saying that. Because the people on the show,
- 11:36Speaker 7: Kratz and Scott Oh, we could, we should give the
- 11:39Speaker 7: fifth inning, long guy.
- 11:40Speaker 6: Entrance, like, no, it's the closer, it's the ninth inning. No, no, no,
- 11:44Speaker 6: no no.
- 11:44Speaker 7: So before we let you go, I have to ask
- 11:46Speaker 7: you this. I know you're from Georgia. You tweet a
- 11:47Speaker 7: lot about the Georgia Bulldogs. I'm sorry, Ole miss all
- 11:51Speaker 7: the way. Okay, sorry, I'm a Florida face.
- 11:53Speaker 6: You know, nice, nice job, Kirby with your bowl cut.
- 11:56Speaker 7: But it's Kirby Smart going to leave for the Atlanta Falcons,
- 11:59Speaker 7: because that is the rumor. And when he does, well,
- 12:02Speaker 7: you Georgia fans ever, stop crying.
- 12:06Speaker 2: No, he's not leaving. He's forever solidified in Georgia history.
- 12:12Speaker 3: I mean he played there, he coached there, national champion there,
- 12:15Speaker 3: coaching wise, back to back. I mean, he's got it
- 12:17Speaker 3: made there. I mean it's it would be it would
- 12:22Speaker 3: put the stay of Georgia in to a full panic
- 12:24Speaker 3: if he left, because University of Georgia. I don't mean
- 12:27Speaker 3: this by any disrespect to Falcons fans, but University of
- 12:30Speaker 3: Georgia football runs Georgia right like Saturdays, Like that's what
- 12:36Speaker 3: that's the thing.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Everyone does.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Everyone has plans for you know, based around Georgia football games.
- 12:41Speaker 2: No one really plans around the Falcon games.
- 12:44Speaker 3: It's like, oh, the Falcons are on and that Again
- 12:46Speaker 3: this is not no disrespect to them, but it's just
- 12:47Speaker 3: like Saturdays SEC football, Like that's that's the mecca for Saturdays,
- 12:53Speaker 3: you know, or for football if you will.
- 12:55Speaker 2: But yeah, no, if he leaves the state of Georgia,
- 12:59Speaker 2: my burn up in flames.
- 13:03Speaker 7: The scale pan and I'm gonna call Arthur Boy. I
- 13:06Speaker 7: think I'm gonna call Arthur Boy. I'll contribute five bucks
- 13:09Speaker 7: and get him out of there.
- 13:10Speaker 5: I want to see this.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Spoken like a true Florida fan right there.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Absolutely, I got one for on everyone's favorite team, Team USA.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Did you get a call for the World Baseball Classic?
- 13:21Speaker 1: And if not, you should get a call, and would
- 13:25Speaker 1: you say, yes, I have.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Got a call.
- 13:29Speaker 3: We talked, you know, early on, but I haven't heard back.
- 13:32Speaker 3: It was kind of right around the time that I was,
- 13:34Speaker 3: you know, signing with the Phillies, and so I don't know.
- 13:37Speaker 3: I think it would be really cool. It would be
- 13:40Speaker 3: uh tough, just because it's my first ring training with
- 13:43Speaker 3: the Phillies and and it would be a situation where I,
- 13:46Speaker 3: you know, I would want to you know, be here
- 13:47Speaker 3: for the team that you know, I would be playing
- 13:49Speaker 3: with for the next two years. But definitely obviously a
- 13:53Speaker 3: huge honor to you know, represent America and and go
- 13:55Speaker 3: play in the Little baseball obviously a dream for a
- 13:57Speaker 3: lot of guys. So yeah, yeah, I mean I think
- 14:00Speaker 3: it would be a tough decision. I mean, I definitely,
- 14:02Speaker 3: like I said, wouldn't be honored. But it's kind of
- 14:04Speaker 3: tough because you know, I'm hoping to pitch really long
- 14:08Speaker 3: so the Phillies and into October this year, and so yeah.
- 14:12Speaker 2: It's I did get a phone call though, so I
- 14:14Speaker 2: appreciate that.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and some of your teammates won't be in spring
- 14:19Speaker 1: training for long, Bryce Schwarber, maybe some others too, so
- 14:24Speaker 1: we'll find out. But they still have to fill out,
- 14:26Speaker 1: like hath their bullpen.
- 14:27Speaker 5: I'm looking at the rosters, so you.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Might get another call, but good to know, right it
- 14:31Speaker 1: might happen, So keep us posted if it does happen,
- 14:34Speaker 1: we'd be excited to see you there. Otherwise we'll see
- 14:36Speaker 1: you at spring training.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Uh in Florida. Sweep Do you golf?
- 14:44Speaker 5: Oh?
- 14:44Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot?
- 14:46Speaker 6: Philly love Philly area, Philly, New Jersey area.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Maybe one of the most underrated golf destinations in the
- 14:53Speaker 4: United States. Obviously, Florida has a thousand courses. But yeah,
- 14:58Speaker 4: unbelievable golf right around my corner.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Yeah, yuh oh perfect, Yeah, I need uh, I need
- 15:02Speaker 3: all the hookups for all the golf around here.
- 15:05Speaker 4: I got your guy for you.
- 15:09Speaker 6: Pay. That's the best part.
- 15:11Speaker 1: First round, rat, thanks for joining us. Appreciate it, man,
- 15:15Speaker 1: enjoy the rest of the off season.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you guys for having me. I appreciate it.
- 15:20Speaker 1: We've got our next guest joining us right now. Matt
- 15:23Speaker 1: Strump is ready to go back on the show. Here
- 15:25Speaker 1: we go, Matt.
- 15:27Speaker 6: Great to have you back on.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Man.
- 15:28Speaker 6: How you doing.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Been an interesting off season for you and you end
- 15:32Speaker 1: up back in a familiar spot.
- 15:35Speaker 5: Yeah, yep, that's that's the business of baseball.
- 15:40Speaker 6: Yeah, thanks, training already, Yeah, where you're going, dude?
- 15:45Speaker 5: What was that?
- 15:46Speaker 6: Sorry? Are you driving the spring training? Already?
- 15:51Speaker 8: Just got done working out, but I'm already down here
- 15:53Speaker 8: in Arizona's already.
- 15:56Speaker 6: There you go.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Okay, So what have you talked to Kansas City about,
- 16:00Speaker 1: you know, since you found out the news? Like who
- 16:02Speaker 1: makes the phone call? Give us the play by play
- 16:04Speaker 1: of how that goes down?
- 16:06Speaker 5: Oh?
- 16:06Speaker 8: Jj uh Dave called me first to let me know
- 16:10Speaker 8: I've been traded, and then I got a call from
- 16:12Speaker 8: J and uh, he basically said, welcome home, and I said,
- 16:17Speaker 8: I couldn't be more excited.
- 16:19Speaker 5: To be home. So it's, uh, it feels like a movie.
- 16:22Speaker 5: You know.
- 16:23Speaker 8: That's who drafted me, who brought me up. And I
- 16:25Speaker 8: kind of gave JJ a little hard time. I said,
- 16:28Speaker 8: you guys ran such a great organization that received the
- 16:32Speaker 8: butt heads everywhere I went, So it was it's good
- 16:35Speaker 8: to be back.
- 16:37Speaker 7: Are you driving as you do this interview? Are you
- 16:40Speaker 7: hopefully there's someone else driving?
- 16:42Speaker 1: Nah?
- 16:43Speaker 5: If Yeah, my brother drives me everywhere.
- 16:45Speaker 2: So.
- 16:47Speaker 7: Because he's good because I do a lot of crazy things,
- 16:50Speaker 7: but I've never done an interview while driving, at least
- 16:52Speaker 7: pull over.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Well you've done that, but you do that the phone.
- 16:55Speaker 7: Yeah, on the phone, totally on the phone, not like
- 16:57Speaker 7: actually on video driving and trying to look at the
- 17:00Speaker 7: camera and trying to drive, especially on if you're on
- 17:03Speaker 7: Itan out there in Phoenix, there's a good chance you
- 17:05Speaker 7: might get pulled over, watched out for the cameras, the
- 17:07Speaker 7: speed cameras and all that junk where they'll send the
- 17:09Speaker 7: picture to your house.
- 17:11Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't think they pull people over out here.
- 17:14Speaker 8: I think it's just I recommendation how fast to go.
- 17:18Speaker 6: No, not true.
- 17:19Speaker 7: I got pulled over full uniform in spring training one year.
- 17:22Speaker 7: And I got a ticket in full uniform on my
- 17:24Speaker 7: way to the Reds from Goodyear from fun deal. Yeah, yeah,
- 17:29Speaker 7: full uniform. Side of the road guy gives me a
- 17:31Speaker 7: ticket and he goes, where are you going. I'm like,
- 17:33Speaker 7: I'm going to the baseball game. And he's like, is
- 17:35Speaker 7: that why you're dressed in uniform? And I said, well, no, officer,
- 17:38Speaker 7: I just thought i'd wear this today because doesn't it.
- 17:40Speaker 6: Look good on me?
- 17:41Speaker 7: Like yes, in person that I'm a player going to
- 17:43Speaker 7: the game. So anyways, but I decreate. How excited are you?
- 17:48Speaker 7: I mean, I know you loved your time in Philly. Philly,
- 17:50Speaker 7: you guys had a great run there. But now you're
- 17:51Speaker 7: going to a team in Kansas City that's kind of
- 17:53Speaker 7: on the up and they have great younger players.
- 17:56Speaker 6: How excited are you to be a leader in this
- 17:58Speaker 6: bullpen for the Royals?
- 18:01Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 18:01Speaker 8: I mean I I I'm so excited to be back.
- 18:05Speaker 8: And just I mean, the biggest, the biggest thing for
- 18:08Speaker 8: me right now in my career is I want to win,
- 18:11Speaker 8: and uh, you know, I think I think this is
- 18:13Speaker 8: a young team with a lot of talent, and I
- 18:16Speaker 8: mean last year didn't and how they wanted it to.
- 18:19Speaker 5: Obviously very disappointed.
- 18:20Speaker 8: But when you mix that with some young guys that
- 18:24Speaker 8: that can that could turn into a dangerous recipe, and
- 18:27Speaker 8: you know, anything can happen, and I'm I'm excited to
- 18:29Speaker 8: see what what Kansas City can do.
- 18:33Speaker 4: You said you I thought you said at the end
- 18:35Speaker 4: when you're talking about the conversation with JJ Piccolo, he said,
- 18:40Speaker 4: I've butted heads everywhere I've went.
- 18:42Speaker 6: What do you mean you butted heads? What do you
- 18:44Speaker 6: mean like that?
- 18:45Speaker 4: Is that that?
- 18:47Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 18:48Speaker 8: I mean, I'll just say Kansas City Royals do an
- 18:50Speaker 8: unbelievable job of not only producing major league athletes, but
- 18:55Speaker 8: they produced men like that is something I was brought
- 18:59Speaker 8: up with Kansas City and Date Moore. His whole thing was,
- 19:02Speaker 8: we're gonna have good ball players, but we're gonna first
- 19:04Speaker 8: make sure you guys are good men. And uh, you know,
- 19:07Speaker 8: Kansas City kind of just has in my opinion, they
- 19:10Speaker 8: do they do it the right way.
- 19:12Speaker 5: You know.
- 19:13Speaker 8: Ten thirty ground balls mean Russy Coots was hitting that
- 19:16Speaker 8: funk go at ten thirty It wasn't ten thirty five
- 19:19Speaker 8: because we're waiting on Hosper. Osper was there five minutes early,
- 19:22Speaker 8: so you know, it's uh, it's I am a very
- 19:25Speaker 8: routine human being. I love structure, and structure doesn't work
- 19:31Speaker 8: unless there's discipline or someone enforcing the structure.
- 19:38Speaker 7: All right, So now let's go to the team you
- 19:41Speaker 7: just left. How do you feel like your time went
- 19:44Speaker 7: in Philly? And were you happy? I mean, they obviously
- 19:48Speaker 7: traded you away, which happens to all of us.
- 19:50Speaker 6: We get traded, we get moved. Is there anything maybe
- 19:52Speaker 6: you wish different happenings?
- 19:54Speaker 7: I mean, I know, besides winning a World Series, But
- 19:56Speaker 7: how do you how do you sew up your time
- 19:58Speaker 7: in Philadelphia as a Philly.
- 20:03Speaker 8: I mean, the best way to put it is it
- 20:06Speaker 8: was the best three years of my career. You know
- 20:08Speaker 8: it was again, I love this game. Yeah, money is awesome,
- 20:13Speaker 8: don't get me wrong, but winning is better. Like I
- 20:17Speaker 8: love winning, And that's the most winning I've done in
- 20:20Speaker 8: my career is in Philly. And it was fun to
- 20:23Speaker 8: do it in front of a packed house every night,
- 20:25Speaker 8: whether it be June Tuesday, in June or the playoffs
- 20:30Speaker 8: in October. You know, it was an exciting place to
- 20:32Speaker 8: show up and work every day. But yeah, I mean
- 20:36Speaker 8: obviously fell short of the goal. And again, it's business.
- 20:39Speaker 8: You can't control it. Now I'm gonna go try to
- 20:42Speaker 8: win one in Kansasity.
- 20:45Speaker 4: Talking about Philly again, Matt Gelb and other writers wrote
- 20:50Speaker 4: about how maybe you and Costianos had some butting aheads
- 20:54Speaker 4: with players or front office. How is that? How do
- 20:59Speaker 4: you take that and how is that perceived from a
- 21:02Speaker 4: player's standpoint when you're like, Wow, I really truly want
- 21:07Speaker 4: what you just said, win and go out there and
- 21:10Speaker 4: men being men?
- 21:12Speaker 8: Yeah, well, first of all, I would like I mean,
- 21:17Speaker 8: I don't I'm unaware of any player I've ever bought
- 21:19Speaker 8: it ahead with there.
- 21:20Speaker 5: I mean, that's all.
- 21:22Speaker 8: I'm a middle reliever. I'm not going to be a
- 21:24Speaker 8: Hall of Famer. But the one thing I control is
- 21:26Speaker 8: being a good teammate. And I don't think there's one
- 21:28Speaker 8: guy in there that would say a bad thing about me.
- 21:33Speaker 8: But uh, you know, it's everything's business, and I'll call
- 21:37Speaker 8: a spade a spade, and in this business those guys
- 21:41Speaker 8: usually are like But at least I know I have
- 21:45Speaker 8: my job because I'm the guy for the job.
- 21:50Speaker 6: There you go, Okay, I respect that. Listen.
- 21:54Speaker 7: We all know, especially for me, we know how the
- 21:57Speaker 7: media can spin things and make things out of nothing.
- 22:01Speaker 6: So listen, I respect exactly what you just said. And listen.
- 22:04Speaker 6: The only people that truly know you are the people
- 22:06Speaker 6: inside your clubhouse.
- 22:07Speaker 7: And other than that, you know, people outside can say, oh, this,
- 22:11Speaker 7: and now we think this, we think that. Would they
- 22:14Speaker 7: ain't in there every day, and they ain't in there
- 22:15Speaker 7: grinding with you every day, and they don't know what
- 22:17Speaker 7: you're about, then who cares.
- 22:18Speaker 6: What they say? That's kind of the way I look
- 22:20Speaker 6: at them.
- 22:20Speaker 5: So yep, exactly.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Hey, Matt, do you feel like, you know, like, what
- 22:27Speaker 1: was it like at the end just now with Philly
- 22:30Speaker 1: in the playoffs? Obviously you guys fell to a Dodgers
- 22:32Speaker 1: team that was really damn good. So was it disappointing
- 22:35Speaker 1: knowing that you had, you know, such a talented roster
- 22:38Speaker 1: and all of that, and obviously they're gonna try and
- 22:40Speaker 1: run it back again. But it did feel like, you know,
- 22:43Speaker 1: the window does close eventually when you have a number
- 22:46Speaker 1: of superstars like that.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Yeah, no doubt.
- 22:50Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean last year, honestly, all three years they
- 22:54Speaker 8: had felt the same, like you just were so talented.
- 22:58Speaker 5: We came up short. We didn't do the end goal.
- 23:00Speaker 4: Uh.
- 23:01Speaker 8: I still think the one that hurts me the most
- 23:03Speaker 8: still is the NLCS against the Diamondbacks. That was just
- 23:06Speaker 8: I mean, I still have a sour taste in my
- 23:09Speaker 8: mouth about that one.
- 23:10Speaker 5: So uh yeah, I don't. I mean, losing sucks.
- 23:15Speaker 8: Winning's good and if there's only one that gets to
- 23:18Speaker 8: win at the end.
- 23:18Speaker 4: So all right, Scott Broun, We're not gonna show him
- 23:22Speaker 4: because it's just gonna be me and you on the screen.
- 23:24Speaker 4: He's got huge biceps, so don't be intimidated by him.
- 23:27Speaker 4: But he called the Phillies a regular season team. Is
- 23:32Speaker 4: there any credence to that? Is there anything you're on
- 23:35Speaker 4: that team? I try, we try to explain to Scott. Look,
- 23:38Speaker 4: you go out, you play the game. Yes, the results
- 23:41Speaker 4: in the postseason doom hatter. But is there such a
- 23:44Speaker 4: thing as a regular season team? And where the Phillies
- 23:47Speaker 4: a regular season team?
- 23:50Speaker 5: I don't.
- 23:51Speaker 8: I mean, we all know playoff baseball like it you
- 23:55Speaker 8: run into a rocket. They could have been the I
- 23:58Speaker 8: mean that was the Phillies in twenty two. They were
- 24:01Speaker 8: the worst worst team in the playoffs and next thing
- 24:04Speaker 8: you know, they're a Game seven of the World Series.
- 24:07Speaker 8: It's like, so the playoffs, the playoffs is an animal
- 24:11Speaker 8: you can't control.
- 24:13Speaker 5: So I mean can't.
- 24:15Speaker 8: We're all regular season teams, like, all thirty of them.
- 24:21Speaker 7: People don't understand how hard it is just to make
- 24:23Speaker 7: the postseasons. So let's also not let's not forget about that.
- 24:26Speaker 7: How hard just to make the postseason in baseball, it's
- 24:29Speaker 7: a lot harder than any other sports, So let's not
- 24:31Speaker 7: forget about that. And then you're facing the best and
- 24:33Speaker 7: then you're facing the best pitchers, the best teams, and
- 24:35Speaker 7: there's no let there's no game off. Right, So it's
- 24:38Speaker 7: it's very hard to win a World Series. It's extremely
- 24:41Speaker 7: hard to win a World Series, no matter how good
- 24:43Speaker 7: your team is. Right, So that that's why, you know whatever,
- 24:46Speaker 7: don't just don't listen to Scott Scott, just ignore.
- 24:48Speaker 1: He's got nothing to do with Matt Strom. I'm just
- 24:51Speaker 1: saying that the Phillies offense was dynamic in the in
- 24:53Speaker 1: the regular season, and they obviously you're not going to
- 24:56Speaker 1: score as much in the playoffs, but they some of
- 24:59Speaker 1: the the superstar set at themselves, some of them on
- 25:02Speaker 1: the Phillies. So Matt I did two hours on a
- 25:04Speaker 1: talk show every day. You know, you've done media and
- 25:06Speaker 1: all of that. I'm like, Hey, the guys themselves, Schwarber
- 25:09Speaker 1: and others would say themselves, hey, we.
- 25:11Speaker 6: Got to do more.
- 25:12Speaker 1: They said it every year after those losses.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Yeah, but I mean the media set, it was a
- 25:18Speaker 5: picture's full, you know.
- 25:21Speaker 6: That media not me, not me.
- 25:24Speaker 7: He'd come back, great, comeback. All right, let's move on.
- 25:27Speaker 7: Let's move on from the Phillies. You're no longer a Philly.
- 25:29Speaker 7: You had a great time in Philly, cool all that stuff.
- 25:32Speaker 7: You haven't had to cut your hair in Kansas City.
- 25:34Speaker 7: You clearly grown your beard out, which is also awesome.
- 25:36Speaker 7: But you're a big card collector. How many autographs are
- 25:40Speaker 7: you gonna ask Bobby Witz Junior for as soon as
- 25:42Speaker 7: you walk it? Are you just gonna walk in with
- 25:44Speaker 7: like a stack of cards like this and say, Bobby teammate, dues, dude,
- 25:48Speaker 7: just start signing.
- 25:49Speaker 8: Bro Well, so I know Bobby is a big card
- 25:52Speaker 8: collector himself too, and I in the owner of one
- 25:57Speaker 8: of his rarest rookie audit drafts. So there's gonna be
- 26:01Speaker 8: a stack of cards he'll have to sign if he's
- 26:04Speaker 8: thinking he's gonna get that in the trade.
- 26:06Speaker 5: So so we'll see.
- 26:08Speaker 4: Oh I like that because that that brings me to
- 26:12Speaker 4: my question. Is there like a hierarchy in the card land?
- 26:17Speaker 4: When you look at a guy like Bobby Witting you
- 26:18Speaker 4: and everybody knows what his contract is, it's it's big
- 26:21Speaker 4: nine figures and you both are card efficionados.
- 26:25Speaker 6: Do you look at him?
- 26:26Speaker 2: Go?
- 26:26Speaker 4: Man, bro If I had that kind of money, I'd
- 26:29Speaker 4: be buying all the kinds of stuff like I don't
- 26:31Speaker 4: have the coolest stuff, Like is there that in the
- 26:34Speaker 4: card in the card land?
- 26:36Speaker 5: I'm sure there is. For some me.
- 26:38Speaker 8: As a card collector, I'm a huge I call myself
- 26:40Speaker 8: a pack rat.
- 26:41Speaker 5: I enjoy the chase.
- 26:43Speaker 8: I mean like some guys enjoy scratch off lottery tickets
- 26:46Speaker 8: and just the adrenaline Russ's scratching. I like opening packs
- 26:50Speaker 8: and whatever I open is what I collect.
- 26:53Speaker 5: I'm not. I'm not like a guy that is like, oh,
- 26:55Speaker 5: I need the.
- 26:56Speaker 8: Rookie Michael Jordan card, so I'm gonna go buy it
- 26:58Speaker 8: a PSA ten. I might find a pack of eighty
- 27:02Speaker 8: six and open it up and see if I can
- 27:04Speaker 8: hit his rookie card, but I'm more of a pack rat.
- 27:08Speaker 8: I enjoy it, enjoy the chase. But there's definitely some
- 27:11Speaker 8: people that are like, yeah, oh, if I had your money,
- 27:14Speaker 8: I'd buy a whole case of cards. And it's like, well,
- 27:17Speaker 8: it's financially not smart. It's like the way I collect. Yeah,
- 27:24Speaker 8: the way I collect is shoot myself in the foot
- 27:26Speaker 8: for sure, Like I'm not making money on what I spend,
- 27:30Speaker 8: but it's uh, it's just a fun little adrenaline rush
- 27:34Speaker 8: for me.
- 27:34Speaker 5: I guess I don't gamble.
- 27:35Speaker 6: I don't.
- 27:36Speaker 5: I don't do do that. That is my gambling baseball cards.
- 27:41Speaker 7: I just say most some people would say that's gambling.
- 27:43Speaker 7: So then that leads me to the next thing. Do
- 27:45Speaker 7: you like where card collecting has gone? Because it used
- 27:48Speaker 7: to be you can buy a pack for fifty cents
- 27:50Speaker 7: or quarter and you get the little piece of bad
- 27:52Speaker 7: bubble gum that tasted for about three choos and then
- 27:55Speaker 7: you had to throw it out because you can break
- 27:56Speaker 7: your teeth off, right, But now it's thirty bucks for
- 28:00Speaker 7: pack or three hundred bucks for a box or wherever
- 28:02Speaker 7: it is.
- 28:03Speaker 6: Are you okay with that?
- 28:06Speaker 8: It's it's getting crazy. I mean when I first got
- 28:12Speaker 8: back into it in like twenty eighteen, you could buy
- 28:16Speaker 8: a box of tops chrome for one hundred and twenty
- 28:18Speaker 8: nine bucks, and now I think they're two fifty. So
- 28:22Speaker 8: it's it's getting expensive becoming a I don't know, it's
- 28:28Speaker 8: like golf, a rich man's sport, I guess, but it's uh, yeah,
- 28:32Speaker 8: I'm not I wouldn't say. The traditionalist in me would say, no,
- 28:35Speaker 8: I'm not a fan in the direction it's going.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Hey, I'm gonna do my my classic question. I've been
- 28:41Speaker 1: asking dudes, especially from the US, have you gotten a
- 28:46Speaker 1: phone call about Team USA? Because you should get one.
- 28:50Speaker 1: They only have a few relievers right now.
- 28:52Speaker 5: I haven't.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Okay, Well, if you do get a phone call, are
- 28:57Speaker 1: you in.
- 29:01Speaker 5: I mean it's USA, who wouldn't be.
- 29:04Speaker 6: Yeah, that's why I figure.
- 29:05Speaker 1: I mean they've they've got a lot of the position
- 29:07Speaker 1: players obviously, you know a lot of that's figured out,
- 29:10Speaker 1: and even actually for the first time, you're seeing some
- 29:14Speaker 1: you know more number one number two starters join the
- 29:16Speaker 1: fold here.
- 29:17Speaker 6: So what do you think about that?
- 29:19Speaker 1: Do you think there's any reason for the change there?
- 29:22Speaker 1: I know it's been like a hotly debated topic for
- 29:24Speaker 1: the past probably decade at this point, like how does
- 29:26Speaker 1: Team USA get their starters that are, you know, superstars
- 29:30Speaker 1: onto the roster.
- 29:35Speaker 8: I mean, I think the reason I think it goes
- 29:40Speaker 8: back to AJSA and how hard it is to make
- 29:42Speaker 8: the playoffs and we see these the atmosphere of the WBC,
- 29:47Speaker 8: and we've seen what the playoffs have been the last
- 29:49Speaker 8: few years, and I think guys are hungry for that
- 29:53Speaker 8: adrenaline rush and that that atmosphere. So I think it's uh,
- 29:56Speaker 8: I think that's what's kind of taking them out of
