- 0:36Welcome back to Rick and Elaine discuss the Bible
- 0:39and in particular the book of Job. Yep. Excellent.
- 0:44What's going on Elaine Rae Clark? Um, I thought
- 0:47you was going to say what's new pussycat? What's
- 0:51new pussycat? That was a Broadway thing, wasn't
- 0:54it? It's Tom Jones, wasn't it? What's new pussycat?
- 0:58Oh, it was Tom Jones. That's right. Mr. Hips
- 1:01himself. He was. Exactly. What's new? What's
- 1:08new, Pussycat? What's new, Pussycat? Well, what's
- 1:11new is, Tonkat, is that at the end of the day,
- 1:14it's very dark, dismal, drab, dreary, dull here
- 1:18again. It's been pouring with rain all night,
- 1:20with about 22 millimetres of rain, and everybody's
- 1:24wondering what's going on. Well, we had been
- 1:27in a drought for the longest time here and we
- 1:29finally got some rain So I'm very thankful for
- 1:31that it rained during my daughter's wedding and
- 1:33what was really interesting It was that you know,
- 1:36I figured that Annabelle my daughter would have
- 1:38been a little upset but instead she She just
- 1:42powered through and she was more interested in
- 1:45marrying her the love of her life than she was
- 1:48And the and the and the young man was all about
- 1:52holding the umbrella for and opening the door
- 1:55and picking up her dress so it wouldn't get in
- 1:56the mud puddle. Like I was so impressed with
- 1:58these kids. I was like, this is good. This is
- 2:01good. You got you two have figured it out. You
- 2:03love one another and that's what matters the
- 2:04most. That's all that matters, Rick. That's it.
- 2:07I mean, all the external paraphernalia and all
- 2:09that type of thing. Really, as much as it's lovely
- 2:12and it's good to celebrate and to see something
- 2:14different, it's really what's going on inside
- 2:16the two people. And that's what you're there
- 2:18to observe, isn't it? It is. And it's really
- 2:20funny because You know, there's a lot of emotions
- 2:23going on. Annabelle is not the youngest. She's
- 2:26second to the youngest. The youngest, Sarah Beth
- 2:27is graduating this month here in about 10 days
- 2:31and she graduates and she is going to be an emergency
- 2:36medical technician and what we call EMT, a person
- 2:38that rides around in an ambulance and goes around.
- 2:40Oh, we call them paramedics. Paramedics also.
- 2:43Yeah. All right. She's already finished all of
- 2:45her classes. She's already passed everything.
- 2:47So as soon as she graduated. Yeah, she's going
- 2:49in a county, Rutherford County. She's going to
- 2:51be down there. I think I can't remember. She
- 2:54told me there was it was a toss up, but it hasn't
- 2:56been decided yet. She's focusing on graduation
- 2:58right now. But Annabelle being, you know, the
- 3:02age that she is and and watching her get married,
- 3:06there was a how old is she, Rick? She is 20.
- 3:11She actually the seat. No, I'm sorry. She'll
- 3:14be 20 May 25th. So she got married at 19 and
- 3:18my gosh that is quite young, isn't it? You know,
- 3:21I got married at 20. I mean around here That's
- 3:24you know, you don't want to you want you don't
- 3:26want to wait too long because the good ones will
- 3:28get away It goes quick around. Yeah. Well, yeah
- 3:30Yeah, yeah, I don't know whether I go with that
- 3:35completely but I get it But alas, you realize
- 3:38as I got older, you know, as I'm older, I'm in
- 3:40my, I'm 50 now and I'm watching this unfold before
- 3:43my eyes. Oh, you're a young buck, right? I'm
- 3:45a young buck. I'm a young buck. So yeah, not
- 3:48quite, not quite so young, but I would just,
- 3:50it's amazing when you're in events. Like I've
- 3:53been to weddings when I was in my twenties and
- 3:55in my thirties and forties. It's amazing, Heather,
- 3:56you get older when you look at it the way that
- 3:59you look at it differently with wisdom and a
- 4:01lot of that. um comes with time and effort and
- 4:04it it kind of does tie into this study of joe
- 4:07because the the job 28 wisdom that we were talking
- 4:10about is something that only can be revealed
- 4:12from above it only comes from god it's not something
- 4:15that you learn or you mine or you work and so
- 4:19but it's like you said really is experience you
- 4:22know what you experience it's teaching what is
- 4:24it teaching you what are you learning Well, and
- 4:26that's the other side of it is that, you know,
- 4:28I realize that, you know, I have these built
- 4:30in worldviews of my very own that I think about
- 4:33in life. And so here we are. I'm watching my
- 4:36daughter get married and I'm thinking about all
- 4:37of the the things she did as a little kid. And
- 4:41I remember, you know, she we had a hard time
- 4:43teaching her how to tie her shoes. We had a hard
- 4:45time teaching her to ride a bike. We had a hard
- 4:47time getting her to ride in the car without beating
- 4:49her head on the seat and getting angry because
- 4:51she didn't like the feeling of a of, you know,
- 4:54a car movie. Just all, just all of it, just going
- 4:56back and remembering all of the things about
- 4:59her and what made her unique. But isn't it funny
- 5:02though, really when you're going through something,
- 5:04you don't really appreciate the fact that one
- 5:08day you'll look back on those times with fondness.
- 5:11You know, we put a great deal of stock and all
- 5:13they, you know, she's irritated by the seatbelt.
- 5:16And then you look back and you just think, wow,
- 5:18you know, she was irritated by the seatbelt.
- 5:20It was quite amusing really, or she was. hard
- 5:23time, but it was, you always seem to, it's like
- 5:26God takes away the bad and just leaves the good.
- 5:29Yeah, and that's a great way of putting it. Yeah,
- 5:32for me, like when you're in the experience of
- 5:35your own person, you're not thinking 30 years
- 5:37from now, I'm going to look back at this and
- 5:38think of it this way. You're not thinking about
- 5:40it. You'd give anything to see her for one day
- 5:42in the back of that car complaining about seatbelt
- 5:45or not being able to ride her bike or doing all
- 5:47those things. The things that you thought, I
- 5:49can't wait till she gets older and I won't have
- 5:51to worry about that. They're the very things
- 5:52you think. I wish I could wish I could go back
- 5:54with my children. They drove me nuts. Yeah, of
- 5:57course. I would give anything to it. to go back.
- 6:01Just keep in mind, I have seven. Yeah, you're
- 6:04greedy. I had to get them all. But with that
- 6:09being said, as I was sitting there thinking about
- 6:12it, I looked over at her grandfather and I thought,
- 6:15I wonder what's in his mind right now. And I
- 6:17wonder what he's thinking about me. And I wonder
- 6:20what you know what I mean? Like, yeah, it's just
- 6:22this way that it goes. And then I thought, you
- 6:24know, when we're talking about the Book of Job,
- 6:27A lot of times when we read these things, we,
- 6:30this study has been unique because we really
- 6:32try to dig in and get the humanity side of it.
- 6:34But at the same time, I started thinking, you
- 6:37know, like Eliphaz the Timonite had a wife and
- 6:39had children most likely, and it doesn't say,
- 6:42but most likely he did. That was their society
- 6:44in the patriarchy. Job obviously had a wife and
- 6:47children. And to think about what Job's mind
- 6:50is doing because he lost all of his children.
- 6:53And I don't, it's like... And the support of
- 6:55his wife. And the support of his wife and he
- 6:57lost everything that he had and i'm just trying
- 6:59to sit with that i'm like let's really get in
- 7:03here and let's really sit with him because We're
- 7:06going to get into that today. We're going to
- 7:07get into job 29 30 and 31 we're actually going
- 7:10to finish if we can if we have to go over a little
- 7:13bit we will because You know, we slowed down
- 7:16a lot in job's discourses and now I think we
- 7:19can wrap it up pretty nicely in these last chapters
- 7:21So elaine you're going to be reading a lot today.
- 7:22I hope you don't mind. Oh, dear But but we're
- 7:25just gonna sit with the words that job leaves
- 7:27us Let me go to the comments first from the last
- 7:29episode on job 28 We had one comment everybody
- 7:33was busy getting ready to go to the conference
- 7:34And so the person who said she wasn't gonna be
- 7:37able to comment anymore is the one that commented
- 7:39Tony driver. Oh bless her Yeah, Tony. She says
- 7:43good day. My friends awesome study this week
- 7:46It really stood out to be how we can search and
- 7:48understand so much yet wisdom isn't something
- 7:51we can earn it's revealed Yes. I loved how it
- 7:55connects with Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. The
- 7:58fear of the Lord is wisdom and tying it to Christ
- 8:02in 1 Corinthians 1 .30. Rick, that was a mic
- 8:06drop moment. Excellent. Thank you. Yeah, I did
- 8:09the mic drop. Really grateful to be part of this
- 8:12journey with you all. We're grateful that you're
- 8:14here with us as well. And I know that there's
- 8:17a lot of people that are still watching this.
- 8:19Even if you're not commenting, it's OK. We know
- 8:21you're there. We're still thinking of you and
- 8:23praying for you. And I appreciate you being here
- 8:24with us this whole absolutely. Can I just say
- 8:26one thing? The reason I don't come. I mean, unless
- 8:30Rick reads them out to me, I don't I don't know
- 8:33what you're saying. And I can't answer you back
- 8:35if I did know what you were saying. Well, if
- 8:38I did know what you were saying, I'll be able
- 8:39to comment. I have not got my my Apple ID. I
- 8:43do not know how to access comments. I don't know
- 8:46how to do that. Yeah. And so whenever Elaine
- 8:49Apple thing. So all I want to say to you out
- 8:52there is not as if Rick's doing all the answering
- 8:54and, and I'm just not giving a diddly squat.
- 8:57It's literally I cannot, I don't know. I mean,
- 9:01that's why I put my email out there. I think
- 9:03you've read it out my email address. Maybe you
- 9:06could put it on the comments section because
- 9:08it would be lovely to hear what people are saying
- 9:10because I can't hear it unless you tell me Rick.
- 9:12I'll try to remember that. Let me write a note
- 9:14real quick to put that guys. I'll put Elaine.
- 9:18I did get one from Laurie and I did. I did email
- 9:21Laurie back, but I don't know whether Laurie
- 9:23got my email because it didn't say anything about
- 9:26Laurie. It just says something about. Dairy Fair
- 9:29farm or something or dairy. I don't know what
- 9:32it was but unless some sort of like, you know
- 9:34random person in America has got an email that
- 9:37they're probably thinking who's this from but
- 9:39I thought I was sending it back to Laurie and
- 9:41Laurie if you did receive it great But if you
- 9:44haven't I did send one just so thank you for
- 9:47the for the email Yeah, so right now guys if
- 9:51you I wrote a note, hopefully I'll remember If
- 9:54I don't put in the comments like, yo, bro, you
- 9:55forgot the you forgot the email. But if you guys
- 9:58want to contact Elaine directly, you can when
- 10:01Elaine is here. Because I'm on my own here. That
- 10:04would be nice. I mean, you you've got you're
- 10:05very greedy over there. It goes from feast to
- 10:07family. You have the feast and I have the famine.
- 10:09I'm sorry. Please toss me a little piece of bread
- 10:11and you'll get back. Get back. I've got a banquet.
- 10:14Listen, I have I have seven kids and all my friends
- 10:16over here. You're going to have to wait a minute.
- 10:18How mean, how mean is that? Goodness gracious.
- 10:21Yeah, it is like, oh my gosh, you know, I wish
- 10:23I was there to be able to share the whole thing.
- 10:26But, you know, it is what it is. And I just want
- 10:27to just put out there that I love you all. It's
- 10:30not that I don't want to comment. It's just I
- 10:31don't know the comments and B can't comment because
- 10:33I don't know my Apple ID number to get in. When
- 10:36you're here in america i'm gonna help you figure
- 10:38that out i will help you get we will we'll get
- 10:40it figured out so okay and that's gonna be in
- 10:42august guys elaine's coming to america in august
- 10:44she's staying here for a few weeks and uh she's
- 10:47gonna go to the arkansas scotology conference
- 10:49so if you guys go there you get to meet her there
- 10:51um also we're gonna run down and uh visit reformed
- 10:55uh rogers park reform church with alan thompson
- 10:58and dina and tony and camera driver and all that
- 11:00exactly i'm excited for everything I mean, Lori
- 11:03stone. I think she wants to meet you while you're
- 11:05here too. And we're going to try to make this
- 11:07happen. I, I, you know, this is the thing. It's
- 11:09connecting with your brothers and sisters, you
- 11:11know, and that's, that to me is amazing. When
- 11:14I went over there last year, I had such an amazing
- 11:17time with people and I, you know, I just want
- 11:19to replicate it again. I want it to be the same
- 11:22Lord. So please let it happen. Yes, please Lord.
- 11:25All right, let's get into this. So like I said,
- 11:27we're going to get into job 29, 30 and 31. And
- 11:30here's what's important. In my top my second
- 11:33talk at brian was on the widows mites and what
- 11:36i drew out from that so a lot of you guys that
- 11:38are here are actually that are on patreon were
- 11:40actually at the conference so you'll probably
- 11:42remember that i was bringing out that god was
- 11:45the voice of the fatherless the widow and the
- 11:48sojourner he was the defender he was he called
- 11:50himself the father of the fatherless right the
- 11:54defender of widows. What you're going to find
- 11:56out, this is deeply embedded in God's law. It's
- 11:59in the Psalms. It's in the prophets. The way
- 12:02that widows and orphans and sojourners are treated
- 12:06is incredibly important to God. It is what I
- 12:09call the litmus test for righteousness in a society.
- 12:13And if you fail in that, then you're going away
- 12:17from God. If you do what God says in regard to
- 12:20these people, these helpless ones, you're reflecting
- 12:23the heart of God. This is gonna come up in these
- 12:26chapters. Job's gonna talk about this. He's already
- 12:28been accused of abusing them We know that that's
- 12:31not true, but Job's gonna talk about it. Were
- 12:33you about to say something Elaine? Yeah, I was
- 12:35I was just thinking, you know the fatherless
- 12:37boy and The the widow I was thinking also that
- 12:42my mind went to the spiritual aspect of it the
- 12:44fatherless boy And I was thinking about when
- 12:47he divorced Israel and sent them away. He gave
- 12:52a bill of divorce and sent them away. And it
- 12:54was like a child being fatherless, didn't have
- 12:57a father anymore. You know, they were rejected,
- 12:59they were sent away. And that was a ten tribe.
- 13:02And then I thought about the widow when sort
- 13:04of like Christ died on the cross, the old covenant
- 13:06arrangement as God being their husband had finished.
- 13:09And I just thought that in that sense, he's saying,
- 13:13you know, remember when, when Paul meets them
- 13:15at Jerusalem, they said, remember the widow and
- 13:18the fatherless boy. And he said, yes, that's
- 13:20exactly what I was going to do. And I'm wondering
- 13:24whether that was some sort of code for remember
- 13:26Israel. I think it's both. And I'll say this
- 13:29because in Isaiah, Isaiah makes it pretty point
- 13:33blank. He says God tells Israel. if you reject
- 13:38the widow and the orphan and the sojourner i
- 13:41will kill he says i will kill you with the sword
- 13:44and you Will it will have children that are fatherless
- 13:49and you will have wives who are widows so he's
- 13:52he's warning israel so i agree like yes later
- 13:55on when you think about a code for israel definitely
- 13:57i think that's in it but also in it by the way
- 14:00i was pointing out that this still stands in
- 14:02our society today we still need to care for the
- 14:04widows and the orphans in the sojourner like
- 14:06this is never never changes that that's the same
- 14:09again i'm sort of looking at the spiritual aspect
- 14:12here we got joe sort of reaching into the spirit
- 14:14here. And I'm just thinking again, is this the
- 14:18hidden sort of message that Job is sort of like
- 14:22living through, is expounding, you know, with
- 14:25there's a lot of references that we could sort
- 14:26of say that are linked to Christ. You know, so
- 14:29I'm just wondering again, whether, you know,
- 14:31he talks about the widow and the fathers and
- 14:34just the fact that, yeah, it's remember, remember
- 14:37who they are, because we know that in 29, he's
- 14:39remembering. That's right. He's reminiscing.
- 14:41He's going back over it. So again there's many
- 14:45sort of point is the fact that yes even paul
- 14:47said i wish that i could become a curse for my
- 14:49own people in the flesh. You know so again i'm
- 14:52just thinking that we know that again the god
- 14:55brought back you know join the sticks you took
- 14:57the tribe of juda and is any made the one stick
- 15:00again. I'm just you know you took me in jeremiah
- 15:05and then you go to how is that you know. I won't
- 15:07abandon you forever. And, you know, I will speak
- 15:10to you, you know, with with with consoling words
- 15:13and words of, you know, of love. It just yeah,
- 15:18it just it just as much as these people were
- 15:22rejected, we as a nation, we know that individually
- 15:25they were loved. Yes, they were. And yeah, I'm
- 15:28sure that. you've picked up on the deep spiritual
- 15:31meaning of it too. Yes, absolutely. I think it's
- 15:33there a hundred percent. Would you mind reading
- 15:35Job 29? So what she just said is that Job's going
- 15:37to go to remember it. So keep in mind 28, he's
- 15:40talked about wisdom, how it can't be mined. It
- 15:42can't be bought. It can only be revealed. And
- 15:45so that comes from God. That's right. And suffering
- 15:49and the fear of the Lord is wisdom. That's, that's
- 15:52the important thing. So now let's listen to what
- 15:54Job says in Job chapter 29. Right. He says, I
- 15:59wish I were as in the old days, back in the times
- 16:03when God watched over me, when His lamp shone
- 16:07over my head, and I walked through the day by
- 16:10its light, as I was when I was young, and God's
- 16:14counsel graced my tent. Then Shaddai was still
- 16:17with me, my children were around me, my steps
- 16:20were awash in bussar, and the rocks poured out
- 16:24for me streams of olive oil. I would go out into
- 16:27the city gate and set up my seat in the open
- 16:30space. When young men saw me, they would hide
- 16:34themselves while the aged arose and stood. Leaders
- 16:38refrained from speaking. They would lay their
- 16:41hands on their mouths. The voices of nobles were
- 16:44silenced. Their tongues stuck to their palate.
- 16:48Any eat, any ear that heard me blessed me. An
- 16:53eye that saw me gave witness to me. For I delivered
- 16:56the poor when they cried for assistance, the
- 16:59orphan too, who had no one to help him. Those
- 17:01who had been about to die would bless me, and
- 17:04I made widows sing in their hearts for joy. I
- 17:07clothed myself with righteousness, and it clothed
- 17:11itself with me. My justice was like a robe and
- 17:14a crown. I was eyes for the blind, and I was
- 17:18feet for the lame. I was a father to the needy,
- 17:21and I investigated the problems of those I didn't
- 17:24know. I broke the jaw of the unrighteous and
- 17:27snatched the prey from his teeth. I said, I will
- 17:31die with my nest and I will live as long as a
- 17:34phoenix. My root was spread till it reaches water
- 17:37and dew will stay all night on my branch. My
- 17:41glory will always be fresh. My bow always knew
- 17:44in my hand. People would listen to me. They waited
- 17:48and were silent when I gave advice. After I spoke,
- 17:51they didn't talk back. My words were like drops
- 17:54of dew on them. They waited for me as for rain,
- 17:58as for the spring rain, with their mouths open
- 18:01wide. When I joked with them, they couldn't believe
- 18:04it. And they never darkened the light on my face.
- 18:08I chose their way for them, sitting as chief.
- 18:11I lived like a king in the army, like one who
- 18:14comforts mourners." That's amazing. I mean, to
- 18:18be able to write all that, that is so poetic
- 18:20in such depth, isn't it? It is, and he's really
- 18:25driving home. First of all, we know the Bible
- 18:28makes it clear Job was a righteous man. The Bible
- 18:30says it unequivocally. It does not ever say otherwise.
- 18:34The New Testament mentions him. Other is he's
- 18:37mentioned elsewhere in the scriptures about being
- 18:40righteous okay so when he's describing like he
- 18:43took care of the widow and the orphan and the
- 18:44stranger and that whenever he spoke people were
- 18:47listening to him that whenever he joked they
- 18:50were surprised at it you know that he that the
- 18:52widows would sing for joy because of him and
- 18:55that he lived like a cheap i think what he's
- 18:57trying to tell you is that in his because he
- 19:00was the greatest man in all the east. That what
- 19:03he thought was that because of his actions and
- 19:06because of his his life like he the you know,
- 19:11um like the lamp of the eye you know how like
- 19:14everything that's like it's light like he has
- 19:16light coming in it's not darkness he has this
- 19:18inward man understanding of god and he thought
- 19:21that his relationship with god was rock solid
- 19:24and that as he followed what you would consider
- 19:26the laws of god which is exactly what he's doing
- 19:29that he would be blessed and not cursed but that's
- 19:32not the situation he's in and that's what that's
- 19:35where the tension lies that's why he's looking
- 19:37back saying i was respected I had everything,
- 19:41all of the people that were suffering, I took
- 19:43care of it. And by the way, when the Wiccawoods
- 19:45come in, I would break the jaw and take the prey
- 19:47out of the mouth. Like I was the defender of
- 19:49the weak. I'm all those things that God has expected
- 19:53of me. That's what I believe I am. But yet here
- 19:56I am. And now when I used to speak and people
- 19:59would be quiet and just listen and not respond,
- 20:02I'm sitting in the midst of these men where I
- 20:04spoke and all they're doing is responding and
- 20:06mocking me. So that's what Job 29 is about. It's
- 20:09the remembrance of who the man was. And I think
- 20:12that. Go ahead. No, I was just thinking about
- 20:16all that you said there. So much of it is external,
- 20:19isn't it? We're gonna get into the thoughts of
- 20:24Job's thoughts, how he's beginning to be shaped.
- 20:28He's remembering what he was, but they're all
- 20:30external things. I sat at the gate, people listened
- 20:33to me. I did this for them. I did that for them.
- 20:36This is the joy that they got when I did this.
- 20:38And it's all sort of, it's what I did for them,
- 20:41what I did for them. And now he's in the situation,
- 20:45like you say, where he's having to look now.
- 20:48not of what he did for them, as to why he's in
- 20:52this situation after doing all those things for
- 20:55him, for them. It's a dichotomy, isn't it? He
- 20:59can't grasp it. You know, he's given us all these
- 21:02things that he's remembered back in the times
- 21:04when God watched over me, when he watched over
- 21:06me. He saw what I was doing. I did this and I
- 21:09did that and I did the other. It was all I, I,
- 21:11I, I, I. Yeah, it's almost like saying, like
- 21:14when God... We're not saying he's wrong. We don't
- 21:16say he's wrong because we're supposed to be these
- 21:18things. However, it's like when he said when
- 21:21God guided me in his light, right? Like when
- 21:23God guided me. So he right now he's sitting in
- 21:26what he feels is chaos and darkness. And he's
- 21:28like, I remember whenever I was doing all of
- 21:30the things that I believe God wanted me to do
- 21:32and that God was showing me these things and
- 21:34working with me. But now what? So. you know,
- 21:38trying to break down every single verse here
- 21:40is not necessary. If you guys want to go back
- 21:41and do it, go back and look at everything that
- 21:43Job did. I can tell you that he's following the
- 21:46law of God is what he's doing. And he's following
- 21:49it to a T. Whatever that law was at that particular
- 21:50time. There was no law other than the oral. Whatever
- 21:53it was, because we know that the law had not
- 21:57been released yet. So this is something the oral
- 22:01that was transmitted from person to person and
- 22:03the priesthood most likely I don't know if it's
- 22:05after the order of Melchizedek I don't know guys.
- 22:07It doesn't really say but we do know that he
- 22:09operated as a priest He was over his family was
- 22:11the greatest in the East and that he was a righteous
- 22:14man. This is what we know So there's something
- 22:16more this wisdom that's being revealed from heaven
- 22:19is something that he's grasping for and so he's
- 22:22looking back at his life And he's seeing how
- 22:25he was an honorable, righteous man. Now, if you
- 22:27would, Elaine, let's go into chapter 30 and now
- 22:30watch where he says, this is where I'm at right
- 22:33now. Yeah. He says, but now those younger than
- 22:38I hold me in derision. Men whose fathers I wouldn't
- 22:42even put in with the dogs that guard my sheep.
- 22:45What used to me was the strength in their hands.
- 22:48All their vigor had left them worn out by want
- 22:51and hunger. They gnaw the dry ground in the gloom
- 22:55of waste and desolation. They pluck saltwort
- 22:58and bitter leaves. These, with broom -tree roots,
- 23:02are their food. They are driven away from society,
- 23:06with men shouting after them as after a thief,
- 23:10to live in gullies and vadis, in holes in the
- 23:12ground and caves in the rocks. Among the bushes
- 23:15they howl like beasts and huddle among the nettles,
- 23:18irresponsible nobodies driven from the land.
- 23:21Now I have become their song. Yes, I am a byword
- 23:25with them. They loathe me and stand aloof from
- 23:29me. They don't hesitate to spit in my face. For
- 23:33God has loosened my bowstring and humbled me.
- 23:36They throw off restraint in my presence. At my
- 23:40right, the street urchins attack, pushing me
- 23:43from place to place, besieging me with their
- 23:46ways of destruction, breaking up my path, furthering
- 23:50my calamity. Even those who have no one to help
- 23:53them, they move in as though a wide gap. Amid
- 23:57the ruin, they roll in on waves. Terrors tumble
- 24:00over me, chasing my honor away like the wind
- 24:03of my hope of salvation, and it passes like a
- 24:06cloud. So now my life is ebbing away. Days of
- 24:10grief has seized me. At night, pain pierces me
- 24:14to the bone so that I never rest. My clothes
- 24:17are disfigured by the force of my disease. They
- 24:20choke me like the collar of my coat. God has
- 24:23thrown me into the mud. I have become like dust
- 24:26and ashes. I call out to you, God, but you don't
- 24:29answer me. I stand up to plead, but you just
- 24:33look at me. You have turned cruelly against me.
- 24:36With your powerful hand, you keep persecuting
- 24:39me. You snatch me up on the wind and make me
- 24:42ride it. You toss me about in the tempest, for
- 24:44I know that you will bring me to death, the house
- 24:47assigned to everyone living. Surely God wouldn't
- 24:50strike at a ruin. If I'm once calamity, one cried
- 24:54out to him for help. Didn't I weep for those
- 24:56who were in trouble? Didn't I grieve for the
- 24:59needy? Yet when I hoped for good, what came was
- 25:02bad. When I expected light, what came was darkness.
- 25:08My insides are in turmoil. They can't find rest.
- 25:12Days of misery confront me. I go about in sunless
- 25:15gloom. I rise in the assembly and cry for help.
- 25:19I become a brother to jackals and a companion
- 25:23of ostriches. My skin is black and falling off
- 25:26of me and my bones are burning with heat. So
- 25:30my lyre is turned for mourning, my pipe to the
- 25:34voice of those who weep. Man, can you hear it?
- 25:40So, so before he what he's doing in 29, remember
- 25:43wisdom comes from God. He's trying to under,
- 25:45he's saying, he knows it's being revealed from
- 25:46heaven. Where is it? And then when you get to
- 25:4829, he's now he's looking back at his life and
- 25:51he's remembering all of the things that were
- 25:52good, all of the things that he thought that
- 25:54he was doing that was correct and how blessed
- 25:57that he was. And then in this one, now he starts
- 25:59saying some really hard things like not only
- 26:03is he destroyed physically, we know this, not
- 26:06only is he destroyed emotionally, we know this,
- 26:08but physiologically, theologically worldview.
- 26:12All of this in the ancient world is catastrophe.
- 26:16When you see a man go through this in the ancient
- 26:18world, it is evidence that God is against him.
- 26:20That's what the worldviews are. And we have that
- 26:23even in our modern time. We've talked about that
- 26:25numerous times in this study. So when Jobe describes
- 26:29these things that are deeply physical, for example,
- 26:31he says, my bones are burning. I have sleeplessness.
- 26:34I'm in constant pain. I have physical disfigurement.
- 26:37I'm in exhaustion. I have a loss of identity.
- 26:40Even my garment. disfigures me like whatever's
- 26:44happening with these boils or whatever's going
- 26:45on like his garment is different like he looks
- 26:47like a heap a mess in the dust here have you
- 26:51ever really sat in that for a little while and
- 26:54thought about what that must really be like because
- 26:57i've never i mean i've been going through a lot
- 27:01i have been but nothing anywhere close to this
- 27:05and to think that he's still not cursing god
- 27:09what he's saying is It should be painfully obvious.
- 27:13If anybody knows who I am, if I could pick you
- 27:15up and put you in my head and know what I really
- 27:17am. The only thing that I can say about myself
- 27:19is that the things that I hope for didn't happen.
- 27:22And what I think about is that whenever Job said
- 27:26he offered sacrifices for his children and perhaps
- 27:28the thoughts of their heart were against God,
- 27:31like that was a hope. He was sure that the early
- 27:33chapters were showing us this was a hope of his
- 27:35is that he wanted to It's on behalf of his children
- 27:38because he loved his children. He wanted to care
- 27:40for his children That's not what happened. All
- 27:42of his children were taken so his hope Didn't
- 27:44turn out the way that he thought it would so
- 27:46the idea of blessing and hope and all of this
- 27:48stuff Even his own worldview was skewed and now
- 27:51he's seeing that but he's also looking at the
- 27:54total calamity of his life and he's like wait
- 27:56like Guys, even even the lowest of the low spit
- 27:59at me these people that I wouldn't even let in
- 28:02my territories are now they're over They look
- 28:05at me. They even sing songs and joke about me.
- 28:08This is you know, this is absolute devastation
- 28:12in the ancient world. He's ruined guys. He's
- 28:15ruined but but he's Because we know all this
- 28:20we have chapter 1 and chapter 2 of This book
- 28:24and because you hear him going through this.
- 28:26I don't know why well, maybe I do know why Psalm
- 28:2922 really hit me. I was like, oh, this is the
- 28:34suffering servant. Isaiah 53, Psalm 22. We brought
- 28:37this up many times. Remember whenever he says
- 28:40like, like, God's not answering me. Remember
- 28:44how Jesus said, my God, my God, why have you
- 28:49forsaken me? And he's quoting the Psalm while
- 28:52he's on the cross. Well, Elaine, the thing that
- 28:55I'm thinking about is that This is this is like
- 28:59a type of the suffering servant and that the
- 29:03suffering servant that would come on behalf of
- 29:06God when he comes He's gonna be rejected to the
- 29:10uttermost Because he has to go to the depths
- 29:13that Adam put us in he's got to get below it
- 29:17in order to redeem it so this is a type of Someone
- 29:21like Jesus guys when you look at Jesus's life
- 29:24Yeah, he was stirring up the hornet's nest but
- 29:27he was healing and he was helping the lame and
- 29:31he remember the widow who had nothing left and
- 29:34she had no more sons and then he raises the widow's
- 29:36son to protect him like Jesus anytime he's present
- 29:40death does not occur he resurrects it or stops
- 29:44it so Jesus is Jesus is that suffering servant
- 29:48when you get to John and the high priestly prayer
- 29:51that he doesn't get so many. You see him later
- 29:53on the cross when he's saying father forgive
- 29:55them and he's his beard has been ripped he's
- 29:58been mocked spit upon now his hands and feet
- 30:01have been pierced. He's my god why have you forsaken
- 30:05me and then to look even at the thief beside
- 30:08him remember me when you come to your kingdom
- 30:10and today you will be with me in paradise like
- 30:12this grace in the lowest of the lows. all of
- 30:15the people that he's been training for the last
- 30:17three and a half years have scattered except
- 30:19for his mother and Mary Magdalene and a couple
- 30:22of other disciples, whoever the disciple of Jesus
- 30:24love was, John Lazarus, whatever, John, whatever,
- 30:27I don't care. Whoever that was, it was with him.
- 30:28Everybody else was gone. I think you got to remember
- 30:31that though, Rick, again, this is like you say,
- 30:33you got to remember that, you know, that it was
- 30:36Passover and they were required by law to go
- 30:39to the temple and offer up a lamb. So you could
- 30:42turn around and say, well, actually, they were
- 30:45following the law, which is why they weren't
- 30:47at the cross. Who is they? Well, all the other
- 30:50disciples, the apostles. No, I disagree. They're
- 30:53not there because they're afraid. They're running
- 30:56from Him. They know who Jesus is. They're not
- 30:58following the law. They're scared. They're running
- 31:00from the people who are doing the law to them.
- 31:02That's what I think. But you think otherwise?
- 31:05Well, no. Again, all I know is that they were
- 31:07required by law. It's a known thing that they
- 31:11were required by law. So therefore, If they had
- 31:14seen Christ going to the cross, which they did,
- 31:18they believe that was it. You know, like they're
- 31:20on the road to Emmaus. Well, are you the only
- 31:22one Jerusalem has gone on these last few days?
- 31:25You don't get it. They're downcast. They think,
- 31:27well, this one that we thought was going to do
- 31:29it has done it. So I think a lot of it would
- 31:31have been thinking, well, look, you know, do
- 31:33we go to the cross? And stay there or do we because
- 31:39we think he's dying you know i didn't really
- 31:41understand what was going on at that particular
- 31:43moment or should we go to Jerusalem like god
- 31:46has always told us to do every year was supposed
- 31:48to turn up and do that and take our lands are
- 31:50we going to prepare for the passover. You know
- 31:54so i already had they already had jesus had already
- 31:59prepared the passover. They'd already went through
- 32:01this with him and so what do you say when you
- 32:04say the parcel what do you mean that they are
- 32:06the possible meal. Whenever they remember they
- 32:09prepared the Passover meal and they ate it prior
- 32:11they didn't they didn't they didn't eat the past
- 32:13they didn't actually eat the Passover lamb the
- 32:15night that they had a meal with the Lord. No
- 32:17no no but that's because he had just brought
- 32:19in the new covenant they were understanding that
- 32:21he was bringing in the new covenant. They didn't
- 32:24know that he was going to be dead less than 12
- 32:26hours later, you know, or on the cross 12 hours
- 32:28later. They didn't know that, but they knew.
- 32:31So whenever he was arrested, it says that they
- 32:33fled because they were afraid. Peter and John
- 32:36or Peter and the last of the disciples whom Jesus
- 32:38loved went in and stayed close nearby during
- 32:41his trials. And then eventually Peter would leave
- 32:44and weep bitterly because these little girls
- 32:47were noticing that he was the disciple. So to
- 32:48me, it's like. I don't even know if they're even
- 32:52remembering their Jewishness as much as they
- 32:54are just running for their lives at this point
- 32:56and Realizing that maybe they had a hope that
- 32:59was you know extinguished but regardless Jesus
- 33:03when I say that Jesus is a type of job. All I'm
- 33:06saying is that Showing us this extreme suffering
- 33:10where he feels like nobody's answering and Jesus
- 33:13by saying my god my god Why are you forsaking
- 33:16me? Let's remember. This is the Holy Son of God
- 33:18Incarnate in flesh dying on a cross saying these
- 33:22words out loud some people say well Yeah, he
- 33:24was just you know quoting a psalm guys. I don't
- 33:27care if he's just quoting a psalm He's quoting
- 33:30it look at the context of the psalm and understand
- 33:32It's him. He's the suffering servant that's actually
- 33:36going through it. So all of those things that
- 33:38he thought and felt as a human was God. Why have
- 33:44you forgotten? Why have you forsaken me? Why
- 33:46have you left me and abandoned me? But I grasp
- 33:48all of that, Rick. I'm not saying that that's
- 33:50not true at all. Everything that you're saying
- 33:52there is is 100 percent. I'm not saying that's
- 33:56all. That is why I haven't interjected, because
- 33:58I can't see a fault. But. you know when you said
- 34:01about they weren't at the cross I just had to
- 34:03interject there to say well you know they didn't
- 34:06know what was really going on yes he had already
- 34:09denied him maybe he just thought well I thought
- 34:12he was but I don't quite I don't think that they
- 34:14really understood anything yes their fear might
- 34:16have prepped in maybe they went down to the to
- 34:20the Passover with their lambs simply because
- 34:23they wanted to be seen to be being faithful sort
- 34:27of loyal servants of God and the law Again, but
- 34:31I but but you and I both know You and I both
- 34:35know and I'm not just trying to be against you
- 34:37I'm just saying like many times when I try to
- 34:39speculate in Genesis that if it's not there,
- 34:42it's not there I can't I can't speculate that
- 34:44all I can tell you is that they were running
- 34:46away. That's what the Bible says I don't know
- 34:49maybe they did maybe some of them did go and
- 34:50try to go with the Passover I don't know but
- 34:52I definitely know that they weren't at the cross
- 34:54with Jesus. He was abandoned all I know is that
- 34:58that that was a law that three times all males
- 35:02had to, the other four, no, but all had to turn
- 35:07up on three particular Passover's, three particular
- 35:12feasts. One was the Passover, one was Pentecost,
- 35:14and one was Tabernacles. So again, and these
- 35:17play a huge part in the redemption story, the
- 35:20Passover, the pouring out the spirit of Pentecost,
- 35:22which they were all supposed to go to, which
- 35:25I think again is spiritual, and Tabernacles.
- 35:27which is the last feast before all of them come
- 35:30to a close. So, you know, for me to tie in spiritually,
- 35:34that's where the root I would go down. I know
- 35:37it doesn't say specifically, but I do know the
- 35:39law required of them to turn up their irrespective.
- 35:43If they missed the Passover, God was gracious
- 35:45and said, well, if you miss it through like an
- 35:47illness or whatever, that he said you could do
- 35:49exactly the same day a month later. So that was
- 35:53what he said. So, for me i was only bringing
- 35:55that up because i was trying to defend them sometimes
- 35:58you know or they just scattered they didn't bother
- 35:59about him and blah blah blah but i'd i'd like
- 36:02to think that you know in their confusion of
- 36:05him dying on the cross and not really understand
- 36:07the same as joe he doesn't understand why he's
- 36:09what's happening both the comforters don't understand
- 36:11what's happening they don't get it you know so
- 36:14i'm just thinking that maybe they didn't get
- 36:16it and they just they they returned to that which
- 36:19they knew which was I need to be at the Passover
- 36:22and offer up the Passover lamb and remember the
- 36:25Exodus from Egypt, which is what I think. And
- 36:29they did observe the Sabbath, obviously. They
- 36:31did, because the Sabbath day, you don't hear
- 36:34the disciples doing anything until Resurrection
- 36:36Day. The only people that are working behind
- 36:39the scenes are people like Nicodemus or, you
- 36:42know, Joseph of Arimathea that's going to Pilate,
- 36:44trying to get his body off. Well, they had to
- 36:46get it off the cross simply because you do not
- 36:49have a body on the Sabbath. That's right. That's
- 36:52right. Exactly. It wasn't the Saturday Sabbath
- 36:54either. Right. It was a high Sabbath. That's
- 36:57exactly correct. So he was probably resurrected
- 37:00on a Saturday night at six o 'clock just after
- 37:03that. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, that's for sure.
- 37:07All right. So I want to wrap up Job 30 by saying
- 37:10it kind of like this. Whenever he says, I cry
- 37:13to you for help and you do not answer me. I stand
- 37:15and you only look at me. This is really interesting
- 37:18because when I was talking about Christ on the
- 37:20cross It's kind of the same thing if you put
- 37:21yourself on the cross with Christ and you think
- 37:24about the situation that you're in You ask him
- 37:26the night before to take this cup from him. Now,
- 37:28you know that he's not taking the cup away So
- 37:30that means that you're gonna go the full The
- 37:33full direction I almost said full Monty be that's
- 37:35what I meant Look the the total you're going
- 37:37to the total depth that he's taking it's degree
- 37:40the nth degree Thank you. And that's what Job
- 37:42is doing as well. That's what he's saying. You
- 37:45don't and it's like It's in modern English. It's
- 37:48like I keep talking to you and all I get back
- 37:51is silence. And that's really pretty much what's
- 37:54happening. All he's hearing is the accuser talking
- 37:56to him constantly. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Again,
- 37:59you know, we sort of like we're setting off at
- 38:0129 to 30. And what I see in that is is what he
- 38:06did, what what he achieved. It's almost as if
- 38:09he brought stability, as if he brought sort of
- 38:12peace, as if he brought calm, as if he brought
- 38:15understandings, have you brought sort of like
- 38:17some sort of clarity to people that wanted answers,
- 38:21but then because of the situation he's in, now
- 38:24he's saying, basically, a bunch of idiots are
- 38:27in charge, and it's all gone to pop. Mm hmm.
- 38:30Sure. Yeah. You know, and yet here I am in his
- 38:34condition after remembering and reminiscing in
- 38:3729 about what I did. And yet you've you've left
- 38:40a bunch of like people that just you know young
- 38:44men that are doing this and older people are
- 38:46doing that people spitting in my face and blah
- 38:47blah blah look at the state of me and and yet
- 38:50it's going to wreck and ruin and why why when
- 38:55i look back and see the peace and the calm and
- 38:58the tranquility that i brought to these people
- 39:02because of loving god and yet now you've taken
- 39:05that and you you've reduced it to rubble because
- 39:10everyone around him Was like wild plants again.
- 39:15They were just growing off in all different directions.
- 39:17It was like again What do you say that it says?
- 39:20Among the bushes they howl like beasts. Yeah,
- 39:23I'll be well, what do we know about wild beasts?
- 39:26What are they represent people that have gotten
- 39:28no discern of the law or understanding of God
- 39:31and he says and they huddle amongst the nettles
- 39:34when this was a prickly horrible things You don't
- 39:36even want to dare huddling within and yet they
- 39:39are And this is what he's saying, that, you know,
- 39:42everything that they're out there teaching, bringing
- 39:44about what there's now expounding is bringing
- 39:47rack and ruin. And yet I'm sitting here in rack
- 39:50and ruin and brought all the other things that
- 39:52I was remembering. It doesn't make sense. Right,
- 39:57right. This is what I'm, this is what I'm gleaning
- 39:59from the whole thing. When I contrast 29 to 30,
- 40:04this is what I would, I wouldn't necessarily
- 40:06be thinking about the pain I was in per se. I'd
- 40:10be thinking about, hang on a minute, on one hand,
- 40:13that was what it was like. And on the other hand,
- 40:16now these young bucks and young people and all
- 40:18these others that really don't listen to any
- 40:20council anymore because of getting it from idiots.
- 40:22This is the state of the play. And this man that
- 40:30you used to bring all this about has now got
- 40:33this situation to deal with. And he's just perplexed.
- 40:38I mean, he's just absolutely, you know, this
- 40:41is why he's saying, why? I know. And that's,
- 40:44I think that's the secret. If there is one to
- 40:48this book is that the only way that you're going
- 40:53to get to the wisdom is through 28. It's revelation.
- 40:59The only way you're going to get to it is by
- 41:03going through, understanding 29. saying 30, which
- 41:09is what Jesus look, Job and Jesus are almost
- 41:12identical right now in this regard. Why have
- 41:16you forsaken me? I feel like you've turned cruel.
- 41:19The bulls of Bashan are around me. They're, they're
- 41:22tearing me lots for my cloak. Yes. That like,
- 41:27I feel abandoned. I feel like you're being silent.
- 41:30These are my human feelings. Yet I know that
- 41:33you're there. Why are you being silent? Why?
- 41:38Asking that question sometimes bothers people,
- 41:41but this is exactly what Job is asking. Exactly,
- 41:45but again, like Jesus, he knows really what's
- 41:48going on. I mean, the difference with Christ
- 41:51is he knows, even though he's in extreme pain
- 41:53and he's going through what he, like I've said
- 41:55before, that Christ, when he was on the cross,
- 41:58he preached to those that were at the foot of
- 42:01the cross because he said, my God, my God, why
- 42:04have you forsaken me? Now that takes you back
- 42:06to Psalm 22, the opening verses of Psalm 22.
- 42:10And all the things that he had, he couldn't maneuver
- 42:15all these things. It talks about him being given
- 42:18something to drink. It talks about them cast
- 42:20in lots. So even on the cross, he is witnessing
- 42:23to the fact that I'm the Messiah. And because
- 42:26they didn't have a Bible like us, you know, we
- 42:28got a Bible we could carry it about with us,
- 42:30we open it up to chapters and verses, but they
- 42:32knew it off by heart. By the fact of him saying,
- 42:34my God, my God, why have you deserted me? Bang,
- 42:37Psalm 22. Oh my gosh, what's happened? They've
- 42:40given you a drink. They've cast lots over his
- 42:42clothes. You know, is he really this one? Again,
- 42:45this is the whole thing. Christ is preaching
- 42:47from the cross, which makes it so amazing for
- 42:50me that he understands what's going on even in
- 42:54the moment of his extreme pain and agony. He's
- 42:58thinking of mankind, those standing at the foot
- 43:00of the cross that would have understood the scriptures
- 43:02and said, listen, boys, I'm telling you, go back
- 43:05to Psalm 22, look at what's happened here. And
- 43:07you're going to see, I had no control over this.
- 43:10I am the Messiah. Right and just just like Job
- 43:13who's in his darkness knows that God still sees
- 43:16him He just feels like he's being silent the
- 43:18Psalm 22 suffering says yet God did not turn
- 43:20his face for me So there there's this understanding
- 43:23that where humans can't reach When the righteous
- 43:26suffering servant goes to the lowest of the low
- 43:28and no other human can reach down. God is there
- 43:31So even this is what's the most amazing part
- 43:35about this is that the accuser is being used
- 43:38by God to bring about What's coming in jobs life
- 43:42and what's coming after god is doing things on
- 43:45so many different levels that we can't even proceed
- 43:48it humans can't proceed it but a man who goes
- 43:51through it is gonna understand this. This is
- 43:55how God works. And that's why I believe this
- 43:57is how you become a high priest. This is what's
- 44:00going on. How you have that direct communication
- 44:02with God and are able to mediate His covenant
- 44:05with other people because you have that understanding.
- 44:08This is how Job got there. Job's remembering
- 44:10what he was, but that understanding of God, he
- 44:13did not possess. He has to go through and understand
- 44:17the 30 because now he's like, no, this is where
- 44:20I'm at. So where's wisdom? That's what I was.
- 44:24This is where I'm at So now let's get into the
- 44:26final things that he says let's go into chapter
- 44:2831 and see where he closes because next week
- 44:32we're gonna get into a lie who and That is one
- 44:34of the biggest enigmas to me We're really gonna
- 44:36dig in deep because I sometimes I don't quite
- 44:40understand what's going on there It doesn't make
- 44:42sense, but I've started to draw some pretty cool
- 44:45stuff. So if you would Elaine chapter 31 Course
- 44:49is a long old chapter. Guys, get ready. I get
- 44:51it wrong. That's a lot. It's a lot. I know we've
- 44:54read a lot today, but this is how we're going
- 44:55to close out Job's discourse. I made a covenant
- 44:59with my eyes not to let them lust after any girl.
- 45:03What share does God give from above? What is
- 45:07the heritage from should I on high? Is it calamity
- 45:10to the unrighteousness disaster to those who
- 45:13do evil? Doesn't he see my ways and count all
- 45:16my steps? If I have gone along with falsehood,
- 45:20if my feet have hurried to deceit, then let me
- 45:23be weighed in an honest scale so that God will
- 45:27know my integrity. If my steps have wandered
- 45:30from the way, if my heart has followed my eyes,
- 45:33if the least dirt has stuck to my hands, then
- 45:37let me sow and someone else eat. Let what grows
- 45:40from my fields be uprooted. If my heart has been
- 45:44enticed toward a woman, and I have lain in wait
- 45:46at my neighbor's door, then let my wife grind
- 45:49for another man and let others kneel on her,
- 45:53for that would be a heinous act, a criminal offense,
- 45:56a fire that would burn in the depths of a badden,
- 45:59uprooting all I produce. If I ever rejected my
- 46:03slave or slave girl's cause when they brought
- 46:07legal action against me, then what would I do
- 46:10if God stood up? Were he to intervene What answer
- 46:16could I give? Didn't he who made me in the womb
- 46:19make them too? Didn't the same one shape us both
- 46:22from our birth? If I held back anything needed
- 46:26by the poor or made a widow's eye grow dim with
- 46:29tears or ate my portion of food by myself without
- 46:33letting the orphan eat any of it. No, from my
- 46:37youth he grew up with me as if with a father
- 46:40and I have been her guide from my mother's womb.
- 46:43Or if I saw a traveller needing clothing, someone
- 46:46in need who had no covering, who didn't bless
- 46:49me from his heart from being warmed with the
- 46:51fleece from my sheep. Or if I lifted up my hand
- 46:54against an orphan, knowing that no one would
- 46:57dare charge me in court, then let my arm fall
- 47:00from its socket, and let my forearm be broken
- 47:02at the elbow. For calamity from God has always
- 47:06terrified me, because His Majesty, I could never
- 47:09do a thing like that. If I made gold my hope,
- 47:13If I said to find gold, you are my security.
- 47:16If I took joy in my great wealth, in my having
- 47:19acquired much, or if, on seeing the shining sun
- 47:23or the full moon as it moved through the sky,
- 47:25my heart was secretly seduced so that I would
- 47:28wave them a kiss with my hand, then this too
- 47:31would be a criminal offence, for I would have
- 47:34been lying to God on high. Did I rejoice at the
- 47:37destruction of him who hated me? Was I filled
- 47:40with glee when disaster overtook him? No, I did
- 47:44not allow my mouth to sin by asking for his life
- 47:46with a curse. Was there anyone in my tent who
- 47:49didn't say, no one can find a single person whom
- 47:52he has not filled with his meek. No stranger
- 47:54had to sleep in the street. I kept my house open
- 47:57to the traveler. If I concealed my sins as most
- 48:00people do by hiding my wrongdoing in my heart
- 48:03from fear of general gossip or dread of some
- 48:06family's contempt, keeping silent and not going
- 48:08outdoors, I wish I had someone who would listen
- 48:11to me. Here is my signature. Let Shaddai answer
- 48:15me. I wish I had the indictment my adversary
- 48:19has written. I would carry it on my shoulder.
- 48:22I would bind it on me like a crown. I would declare
- 48:25to him, him, every one of my steps. I would approach
- 48:29him like a prince. And if my land cried out against
- 48:32me, if its furrows wept together, if I ate its
- 48:36produce without paying or made its owners despair,
- 48:39Then let thistles grow instead of wheat and noxious
- 48:43weeds instead of barley. The words of Job are
- 48:48finished. Well, we finally made it there. So,
- 48:52Elaine, I want to ask you a question. No, it
- 48:54was great. No, it was actually great. You really
- 48:56captured it emotionally for me. I was listening.
- 48:59You really got it. But so you remember how you
- 49:02said that in Chapter 30, it was a lot of external.
- 49:04Did you notice how he moved to the internal?
- 49:06Yes. so now what he's done is he's saying i did
- 49:09all of the things now he tells you why when he's
- 49:13on the inside of himself he's saying if i had
- 49:16done this or if this if that in other words i
- 49:19said earlier the light of the body like jesus
- 49:23said that you know the the eye is the lamp of
- 49:25the body And if darkness comes in, how great
- 49:28is that darkness? He's saying that the inner
- 49:31man within the inner man, whatever's going on
- 49:33inside is what produces. It's not what goes into
- 49:35the man is what comes out of the man that defiles
- 49:38the man, Jesus would say. So in other words,
- 49:40it's, it's the, uh, the leaven. It's what you
- 49:43are on the inside, the teaching that you have
- 49:45and understand operative outside. Job is saying,
- 49:49If I had done this, then show me if I had done
- 49:52this, then yes, bring it against me. And what
- 49:54I love about what what he says here is he goes.
- 49:59Bring the accuser and bring that indictment to
- 50:01me and I'll wear it on my shoulder like, OK,
- 50:04this is what I know about me. This is what I
- 50:07know about what I did. So this wisdom, what I'm
- 50:10saying, where is it? How am I going to get to
- 50:12this? Because he needs that. Job needs that wisdom
- 50:16to reveal itself right now because he he can't
- 50:19put this together the ancient world Doesn't have
- 50:22the context for it. It doesn't know what to do
- 50:25with it. This is why the law is important. This
- 50:28is why Moses is important. This is why David
- 50:32is important. This is why Solomon is important
- 50:34all of the writers and the prophets are important.
- 50:37They do not have the context in the ancient world
- 50:39to define God and how he works within the world.
- 50:44And so Job, who was a priest of his family, has
- 50:46been put through this and now he's calling on
- 50:49that wisdom. He recognizes that there's an accuser
- 50:52that's gone before God. He does not know chapter
- 50:55one and chapter two. but he's got it now he knows
- 50:59there is something beyond here that's at work
- 51:02now let me see that accuser let me have that
- 51:05indictment i'll wear it on my shoulder i'm gonna
- 51:08sign my name and i'm gonna say the things that
- 51:11i've done i am righteous now you might think
- 51:13that's false righteousness That's not how jobs
- 51:16approach you just learn in 31 the kind of inner
- 51:18man that he is. That's not what's really going
- 51:20on. Now he's getting ready to get it from Eli
- 51:23who and God's going to put him in his place,
- 51:25but we have to get there first. So this is where
- 51:27job is. And I love how it closes it. Go ahead.
- 51:31No, I just thinking about, you know, the whole
- 51:33thing, really. Again, he goes down even to the
- 51:36personal that, you know, if I have done something
- 51:38in secret when nobody else would know. I didn't
- 51:41have to tell them. He's very aware that God sees
- 51:44all these things. He's done an awful lot externally,
- 51:47like we've gone through chapter 29, and he's
- 51:49reminiscing about all that he did. He's gone
- 51:51through 30, where he's talking about sort of,
- 51:54now you've got a bunch of losers in control,
- 51:56you know, and I, that's what he's saying basically
- 51:59in chapter 30. But now he's sort of like, he's
- 52:03internalizing stuff. And he's starting to say,
- 52:07well, hang on a minute. You know if i've done
- 52:10this and i've done that and it is starting like
- 52:13you said to wake up this is that for me that
- 52:15twenty nine thirty and thirty one are the pivotal
- 52:18chapters of this book yes this is so critical
- 52:23they are. They are very critical. And I think
- 52:26you can take this to anybody. You know, you can
- 52:28look in your own life and you can say sometimes,
- 52:30which we all have done, Lord, you know, why have
- 52:32you brought this upon me? What have I done? I've
- 52:34done this and I've done that and I've done whatever
- 52:36you wanted to do and blah, blah, blah, blah,
- 52:38blah, blah, blah. and you know it's only because
- 52:41we now have the understanding that you know that
- 52:43when God takes you through a trial or a tribulation
- 52:45it's going to at the end of it yield peaceable
- 52:48fruits namely righteousness what you know we
- 52:51understand that we've got the whole Bible even
- 52:52though some people really still don't understand
- 52:54it at times you know I think even all of us have
- 52:57said why why you know why has this come upon
- 53:01me what you know sometimes I suffer with sort
- 53:03of like being in low places And I just want to
- 53:07wrap myself up and curl in a ball and just cry
- 53:10to myself and just say, what is it? And then,
- 53:12you know, you slap yourself around the head and
- 53:13say, it's nothing that's happened. It's just
- 53:15state of mind. You've got to really start thinking
- 53:18about it and be honest with yourself. And I think
- 53:22this is what Jobe is starting to do. And in this
- 53:25honesty, you get not only what he's done and
- 53:28what situation he's in, you'll get in now the
- 53:31humility. You're starting to see that what he
- 53:34did was really good, but maybe there could have
- 53:40been some sort of understanding of the humility
- 53:43of it, that maybe you didn't know the root of
- 53:48all the things that you are doing or were doing.
- 53:52And again, I think it's like Christ says, you
- 53:56know, when you have got bear much fruit, what
- 53:58does he come and do? He comes and chops it all
- 53:59down. You think, well, I was full of fruit here.
- 54:02I was so heavy with fruit. And you come and chop
- 54:04me down and you feel naked again. You feel like
- 54:06you haven't got. But God does that to those he
- 54:09really is taking forward and producing a lot
- 54:11of fruit. And this is what he's doing to Job.
- 54:13He sees this righteous man. Satan sees this righteous
- 54:16man. He's heavily laden with fruit. God says,
- 54:19right, you are right for a few pruning here,
- 54:22but it's through that pruning that he starts
- 54:25to gain more and more understanding, more and
- 54:28more wisdom. He's seeing himself and there's
- 54:31more fruit gonna be produced on this tree. He's
- 54:33gonna come out a totally different man from which
- 54:35he went sick. And that's the whole thing. Not
- 54:37only does the tree produce more fruit, but it
- 54:39grows bigger and wider and stronger. And this
- 54:43is what God is doing to all of his children that
- 54:46he loves. He's pruning us back. You know, and
- 54:49seeing it through the eyes of Job, you know,
- 54:52he's got this pivotal moment. He's going to come
- 54:54into an awareness that he never had before. And
- 54:57it's wonderful to see. And it's like all of us,
- 54:59you know, when we're pruned back by the situations
- 55:02that we go through, it's God moving us forward,
- 55:05not saying we've done something wrong. It's saying
- 55:08now, darlings, I'm going to add to you because
- 55:10this is your time for me to move you on. Yes.
- 55:13Yeah, that's great, Elaine. So this is how we'll
- 55:18wrap up today's study, because we just went through
- 55:20a lot of chapters. There was no sense in me going
- 55:22down through verse by verse and breaking it down
- 55:24for you. You can read it and listen to him and
- 55:26hear exactly what he's saying. I don't need to
- 55:28define any of that for you. We've done enough
- 55:30in this study to understand. As a matter of fact,
- 55:32I would venture to say you've listened to Elaine
- 55:34read enough to where when you hear or say it,
- 55:37you pretty much know where she's at. And that's
- 55:38what that's what I love about it. And this book.
- 55:41So we've got we've immersed ourselves into this
- 55:43now. Here we are. Job is finished his discourse.
- 55:46He said, I will sign that indictment. I will
- 55:48look at this. I want to stand before God that
- 55:50let me see that accuser, give that thing to me
- 55:52and I'll put it on my shoulder. I am righteous
- 55:54in my own eyes. I cannot find it. It's going
- 55:57to have to be God that's going to show it. That
- 56:00chapter 28 wisdom has got to come from him. That's
- 56:04where it's got to come from. It's not coming
- 56:05from you guys. It's not coming from me, but that's
- 56:09why this next chapter, chapter 32, is so awesome.
- 56:13And here's, I'm going to give you a key. Didn't
- 56:15mean to interrupt you Elaine. Did you have something
- 56:17you wanted to say? No, I was just thinking that,
- 56:19you know, again, this, this, this all that Job
- 56:21has said, you know, his righteousness is towards
- 56:24himself and not in his own eyes, in his own eyes.
- 56:27Yes. Very good. That's exactly right. So let
- 56:31me read just a couple of verses and guys, if
- 56:34you would go ahead and read the entire Elihu
- 56:38discourse in several chapters. But if you're
- 56:40willing to go along with us, that's what I'm
- 56:42going to do this next week. I'm not going to
- 56:44go through every chapter. I can't go through
- 56:46all of it, but we'll probably split up Elihu
- 56:48into one or into two or three parts. But listen
- 56:52to these first few verses and then. Let that
- 56:55ruminate because now you're going to know the
- 56:57position the lie who has it says So let me read
- 57:00the last verse that Job's it says in the last
- 57:03verb of 31 the words of Job are ended So these
- 57:08three men cease to answer Job. So let's not let
- 57:11the chapter break break that thought Because
- 57:14he was righteous in his own eyes Then Elihu,
- 57:20the son of Barakel, the Boozite of the family
- 57:23of Ram, burned with anger. He burned with anger
- 57:27at Job because he justified himself rather than
- 57:33God. That's right. That's critical. That's critical.
- 57:36And here verse three, he burned with anger also
- 57:40at Job's three friends because they had found
- 57:42no answer, although they had declared Job to
- 57:47be In the wrong now watch his character now a
- 57:50lie who had waited to speak to job because they
- 57:52were older than he. And when he saw and when
- 57:57you lie who saw that there was no answer in the
- 57:59mouth of these three men. You burn with anger
- 58:01so we'll stop there so now you got it because
- 58:04he was righteous in his own eyes job said he
- 58:06was right to know side. Why was angry at job
- 58:09because he justified himself rather than justify
- 58:11god that is the true statement yes job is righteous
- 58:15he is. But the statement is that he justified
- 58:18himself rather than justify God and his argument.
- 58:20Elihu recognizes that. But then Elihu also looks
- 58:23at the three friends and said, you guys are older
- 58:25and wiser than me and none of you called him
- 58:27out for this. Like, this is ridiculous. And so
- 58:30he's burning anger at all four of these men sitting
- 58:33here. And so now he's going to talk about how
- 58:36to justify God. That is what we're getting into.
- 58:39Get ready. That's beautiful. That's beautiful.
- 58:41And it's the younger one as well. It's the young
- 58:44buck. And this is what I'm saying, it's a bit
- 58:47like, you know, like I say about the old couple,
- 58:49it's always, it's never the first, it's always
- 58:51the second. So you've got all these ones speaking,
- 58:53all these ones that are giving words of wisdom,
- 58:55and then you get this young one that seems to
- 58:57have the most wisdom and displays it towards
- 59:00the others. And it's a bit like sort of, you
- 59:03know, the old covenant with the religious leaders,
- 59:05they should have had all the answers, they had
- 59:07everything. And yet here is the young Christians
- 59:10that weren't intellectual, they didn't know anything,
- 59:12they weren't taught by Gamaliel or anyone like
- 59:14that sit at their feet. And yet here they are
- 59:16coming up with answers. They're coming up with
- 59:18the truth. They're pointing towards God as the
- 59:21one that only should have given what is righteous,
- 59:25the standard of what righteousness is. You cannot
- 59:26be made righteous in your own eyes yourself.
- 59:29Right you know what this reminds me of a lie
- 59:32who you know what it reminds me of reminds me
- 59:33of when joseph and mary to jesus to Jerusalem
- 59:38as a twelve year old boy. and how he stood at
- 59:41the temple steps, you know, and his parents had
- 59:43left the city, but he stayed back behind at the
- 59:45temple steps and started arguing, kind of like
- 59:47Job at the gate with all the people or Elihu
- 59:49at the gate with the young men, like Jesus is
- 59:52there at the temple and he astonished all of
- 59:54the lawyers. They didn't know what to do with
- 59:56this young man because he understood more than
- 59:58they ever did. He was the word incarnate. Let's
- 1:00:01just be honest. Absolutely. But the young sometimes
- 1:00:04will out speak the older, that happens for sure.
- 1:00:08But again, the second, like again, it says, it
- 1:00:11won't be Ishmael, it'll be Isaac. It's not the
- 1:00:15old covenant, it's the new covenant. It's not
- 1:00:17the first Adam, it's the last Adam. It's always
- 1:00:21the second that comes up with that which God
- 1:00:25wants to use. And I think there's definitely
- 1:00:27a spiritual application there, which again, that's
- 1:00:30a story for another time. But yeah, this is gonna
- 1:00:32be this is gonna be funny This is gonna be really
- 1:00:35funny, but i'm gonna take us all the way back
- 1:00:36to the beginning of this conversation about my
- 1:00:38daughter annabelle's wedding Because this is
- 1:00:41the wisdom in it. Okay, here's the wisdom in
- 1:00:43this Whenever I was a young man I would have
- 1:00:48been more worried about how everybody outside
- 1:00:50of me was perceiving what was going on with our
- 1:00:52wedding That was the kind of person that I was
- 1:00:54very superficial. I would say oh no, it's not
- 1:00:57perfect And this this is terrible and what would
- 1:01:01these people think of us and I put a lot of stock
- 1:01:03in that But yet I watched my daughter and her
- 1:01:06new husband Only care about the love and the
- 1:01:09relationship they have and making everybody else
- 1:01:11around them be happy That's what they they they
- 1:01:14were just happy in love and they were they didn't
- 1:01:16care about the rain They didn't care about the
- 1:01:18temperature and that to me was just pure joy
- 1:01:22I was like I am so glad that my daughter has
- 1:01:25found that That's exactly. This is the whole
- 1:01:28thing, isn't it? It shifted from what you said
- 1:01:30when you were younger. It was all external. What
- 1:01:32would people think? What were they seeing? What
- 1:01:33would they look? How would they judge me? But
- 1:01:35now as the older and wiser, what's going on inside
- 1:01:38you has much more, much more depth of weight
- 1:01:42and riches than anything external could possibly
- 1:01:45give you. Yeah. Joy you must have felt was overwhelming.
- 1:01:50You must have felt like the richest man in the
- 1:01:51room. Yeah. And I really would love. Apart from
- 1:01:54her husband, of course. I'm going to ask my daughter
- 1:01:57if I can read their vows, guys. I mean, they
- 1:02:00wrote their own vows and I was absolutely shocked
- 1:02:05about how incredible they were. I mean, these
- 1:02:07two kids are crazy about each other. I pray that
- 1:02:10that sort of that first bloom of youth of a marriage
- 1:02:13that it matures into something far, far deeper
- 1:02:17as the years go by. That's what my that's what
- 1:02:21my prayers for them, because it's so easy to
- 1:02:23feel all those things. This world will chew you
- 1:02:27up and spit you out man. I hope they hold on
- 1:02:30to each other and just stay together and that
- 1:02:32oneness. One on their own is difficult too. They
- 1:02:37can help each other stand, but a threefold cord
- 1:02:40cannot be easily broken. It's going to be a lot
- 1:02:46harder. The amount of people I'm listening, I'm
- 1:02:47hearing about that splitting up with their husbands
- 1:02:49and wise lately is incredible. And I'd say 90
- 1:02:53% of them I've heard. Christians. Yeah. Well,
- 1:02:56guess what? That's what my you know, I'm a divorced
- 1:02:58and remarried Christian and that's exactly what
- 1:03:00happened to me. I was very superficial. I had
- 1:03:03a lot to do with those. I used to blame her for
- 1:03:06everything, but I can't anymore. God's shown
- 1:03:08me a lot about me and myself. So anyway, guys,
- 1:03:11I hope you've enjoyed this study. Please leave
- 1:03:13us all of your comments, any questions, anything
- 1:03:15you want to do, you know that we'll tackle them.
- 1:03:17Don't get mad at Elaine. She doesn't know our
- 1:03:19Apple ID and it's going to have to be August
- 1:03:21when she gets here that we fix that. No, just
- 1:03:23basically don't be mad at Elaine. Just don't
