Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Good morning. Time for Jags AM. I'm Brian Sexton. Mark
- 0:20Speaker 1: Duffner is here. John Ogier is here. We're huddled up.
- 0:22Speaker 2: We're ready to go.
- 0:23Speaker 1: So let's get to big things.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Ready? Break. Here we go.
- 0:26Speaker 3: We'll start with Messi.
- 0:28Speaker 1: That was the situation last week in Cincinnati. 13 penalties.
- 0:35Speaker 1: 11 more from the Cincinnati Bengals. We heard an all-time
- 0:39Speaker 1: high tonight. in penalties and flags being thrown in professional
- 0:43Speaker 1: football right now. So the Jaguars could work all week
- 0:47Speaker 1: to improve and still might not be able to escape
- 0:50Speaker 1: the referee's wrath. The head coach talked a little bit
- 0:53Speaker 1: about it last Sunday in Cincinnati.
- 0:56Speaker 4: A part of anything like that before in my life.
- 0:59Speaker 4: I mean, it just was, I'm not going to say
- 1:01Speaker 4: anything to get fined, but that was, no, I know
- 1:05Speaker 4: that was just mental.
- 1:06Speaker 2: It was mental.
- 1:07Speaker 4: I've just never, quite seen something that much in the
- 1:13Speaker 4: first half of the football game.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Jeff, I'm pretty sure no one can find you, so
- 1:17Speaker 1: you can say anything you want about this situation. I
- 1:21Speaker 1: know that the referees are here during practice, during the week.
- 1:24Speaker 1: I am sure that the Jaguars are asking them to
- 1:27Speaker 1: call every persnippety little thing because in the end, it's
- 1:30Speaker 1: going to have to be the Jaguars and the teams
- 1:32Speaker 1: that adjust to the referees. They're not going to roll
- 1:34Speaker 1: this thing backwards.
- 1:36Speaker 3: No, they're focused in right now on cleaning up the
- 1:39Speaker 3: game to make the game run as smoothly as possible
- 1:43Speaker 3: right now. But I think last weekend the emphasis was
- 1:46Speaker 3: maybe a little too strong as far as that's concerned.
- 1:48Speaker 3: And so I think I know our team right now
- 1:51Speaker 3: is working laboriously at fixing whatever the pre-snap and post-snap
- 1:54Speaker 3: details are to clean up that as far as that's concerned.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Don't give any snaps away. Take everything.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I think.
- 2:04Speaker 5: At some point, there was an NFL Films highlight where
- 2:07Speaker 5: a coach called the referee an over-efficient jerk.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I don't know if anyone remembers that. It seems they're a.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Little over-efficient right now. Sometimes this thing goes in ebbs
- 2:17Speaker 5: and flows. As Brian said, it's all-time high, so this
- 2:19Speaker 5: is a big ebb or flow wherever we are. It
- 2:24Speaker 5: has gotten to the point where it's a bit much.
- 2:27Speaker 5: I've thought for the last three or four years, interference
- 2:30Speaker 5: was being called way too much.
- 2:31Speaker 2: You look around after every point of contact.
- 2:34Speaker 5: And you hold your breath waiting for a flag and
- 2:36Speaker 5: surprise when it's not. So usually in trends like this,
- 2:42Speaker 5: it starts off a certain way during the regular season,
- 2:45Speaker 5: and then by the end, the officials have made their point,
- 2:49Speaker 5: the league office, whatever that happens, I would hope that
- 2:53Speaker 5: it ebbs back down because, look, nobody likes a clunky,
- 2:58Speaker 5: you're waiting for the ref every play game.
- 3:01Speaker 2: It's not good for the league, hopefully, it'll wane.
- 3:05Speaker 1: 17 touchdowns have been called back by penalty through four
- 3:08Speaker 1: weeks of the NFL season. Last year, that number was five.
- 3:12Speaker 1: The year before, it was four. That's not good for
- 3:15Speaker 1: the game, Duff.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Not even close. And again, you know, I think as
- 3:18Speaker 3: you mentioned earlier this week a little bit, the officials
- 3:21Speaker 3: are kind of getting into their groove right now too,
- 3:23Speaker 3: much like the players are. This is still Well, we're
- 3:26Speaker 3: going into week five coming up right now. So they're
- 3:29Speaker 3: trying to find their boat, if you will, as far
- 3:32Speaker 3: as calling the game. And I'm with John. I think
- 3:34Speaker 3: it will probably tend to level off a little bit
- 3:37Speaker 3: as far as that's concerned. But again. They made their
- 3:39Speaker 3: points of emphasis. They come out strong early in the
- 3:41Speaker 3: season in terms of things they want to clean up,
- 3:44Speaker 3: whether it's taunting, whatever the procedural penalties, whatever it is.
- 3:47Speaker 3: They've made their point. Now let's see. Let's play smoothball.
- 3:49Speaker 2: All right.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Jaguars are dialing up AAA for big thing number two,
- 3:53Speaker 1: and we're not talking about AAA automotive here.
- 3:56Speaker 2: We're talking about.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Anyone, anytime, anywhere, which is... the organizational mantra that this
- 4:03Speaker 1: team has developed, both for the football team and the
- 4:06Speaker 1: fact that they're going on the road to play a
- 4:08Speaker 1: lot of games over the next two years. Trevor Lawrence
- 4:12Speaker 1: talked a little bit this week about getting ready for
- 4:14Speaker 1: the Eagles, keeping things in perspective just like he does,
- 4:17Speaker 1: and being ready to play no matter where they are.
- 4:20Speaker 6: I definitely feel like we are a pretty mature team
- 4:24Speaker 6: and we know, one, we know we know we're a
- 4:28Speaker 6: good team, what we're capable of, but we also know
- 4:30Speaker 6: what it takes to go out there and perform and
- 4:32Speaker 6: win on Sundays. It takes a lot of work during
- 4:34Speaker 6: the week and you have to start over every single week.
- 4:36Speaker 6: And that's the reality that you just have to do.
- 4:38Speaker 6: And so if you get caught up in the last
- 4:40Speaker 6: one or what's coming down the line, you just get,
- 4:42Speaker 6: you get distracted and get out of the moment. And
- 4:44Speaker 6: I think our team's done a good job of keeping
- 4:46Speaker 6: it really tight. We know we have to do, and
- 4:48Speaker 6: also not really riding the roller coaster of, You know,
- 4:52Speaker 6: week one, we won. Week two, we lost. And it
- 4:54Speaker 6: never felt like, oh, we're freaking out trying to figure
- 4:56Speaker 6: out what to do. It was like, hey, we just
- 4:58Speaker 6: didn't play our best and we got to go back
- 4:59Speaker 6: to work. And I think that's just been the mindset.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I like to see the quarterback with the even-keeled motion there, John.
- 5:08Speaker 1: You're talking about a football team that is really the
- 5:09Speaker 1: talk of the NFL right now. Everybody has got their
- 5:13Speaker 1: focus on what Liam Cohen and company are getting done
- 5:15Speaker 1: on the field. They're going over to a very bright
- 5:18Speaker 1: spotlight in a big stage. in London to take on
- 5:20Speaker 1: one of the premier teams, the Philadelphia Eagles. And you
- 5:23Speaker 1: could also tie in the fact that the Eagles are
- 5:25Speaker 1: their own circus this week with a historic, it seems,
- 5:29Speaker 1: number of injuries. They have the retirement of Lane Johnson.
- 5:32Speaker 1: They trade away Cam Juergens. And through it all, Trevor
- 5:35Speaker 1: says this team is ready because they're focused on themselves.
- 5:38Speaker 5: Well, if Liam Cohen, he's had many strengths since he's
- 5:42Speaker 5: gotten here. One of the big ones is messaging to
- 5:46Speaker 5: the team, making them realize what they're up against. I
- 5:49Speaker 5: thought that was the brilliance of the AAA theme. In
- 5:53Speaker 5: the offseason, he looked at it and realized, hey, this
- 5:57Speaker 5: is our reality. We're going to have to deal with this.
- 5:59Speaker 5: We may as well embrace this traveling road show, whatever
- 6:03Speaker 5: it is. The good news for him was they really
- 6:06Speaker 5: didn't have to reemphasize anything because they were really good
- 6:07Speaker 5: on the road last year. They beat San Francisco on
- 6:09Speaker 5: the road. They beat Denver on the road. They were
- 6:11Speaker 5: a very good road team. They were already doing AAA anytime, anywhere, anyhow,
- 6:17Speaker 5: whatever it is. So I don't think they had to
- 6:20Speaker 5: change very much, but Duff, to me, as long as
- 6:24Speaker 5: players are aware of what's going on and you don't
- 6:27Speaker 5: surprise them, they usually deal with it.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I think that's what's going on with the AAA.
- 6:32Speaker 3: No question about it. I think that I'm dovetailing you again.
- 6:36Speaker 3: The message that he continues to give to the team
- 6:39Speaker 3: is direct. It's fair. It's honest. And they understand it
- 6:42Speaker 3: right now. There's no loopholes in what the message is.
- 6:45Speaker 3: They've understood, hey, we're going to control what we can control.
- 6:49Speaker 3: whether it's travel, whether it's our play, whether it's our execution,
- 6:52Speaker 3: whatever the case may be, he sent that message loud
- 6:55Speaker 3: and clear to them. They all have bought into that.
- 6:57Speaker 3: That's why this team's playing at the level they are.
- 7:00Speaker 1: The Jaguars will land in London tomorrow morning and head
- 7:04Speaker 1: to the English countryside for the estate where they will
- 7:07Speaker 1: work all weekend. Sounds idyllic, doesn't it? But they're not
- 7:10Speaker 1: there for the niceties. The coach wants them focused, which
- 7:13Speaker 1: is our third big thing.
- 7:15Speaker 2: It's a business trip.
- 7:16Speaker 1: They've got the Eagles, and despite all of the Eagles' issues,
- 7:19Speaker 1: they've got to focus on doing what they have to do.
- 7:22Speaker 1: They can't let any of the little details get in
- 7:25Speaker 1: the way of football. And that's what the coach said
- 7:28Speaker 1: to his team when he met with them earlier this week.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Hey, we've got to have mental toughness to prepare ourselves
- 7:35Speaker 4: throughout this week. and also have a professionalism to us
- 7:40Speaker 4: that understands that this is a business trip. We're going
- 7:44Speaker 4: out there to play football games, and it's something you
- 7:50Speaker 4: have to do, right? Anytime you get outside of your
- 7:54Speaker 4: normal rhythm and routine and environment, something is going to
- 7:59Speaker 4: happen to you. Something will tweak. It's natural for every
- 8:04Speaker 4: human being. And so what I challenge them with is
- 8:07Speaker 4: to identify what it is for you that can occur, right,
- 8:11Speaker 4: when you step out of your environment and routine and
- 8:14Speaker 4: to think about it and to get ahead of it.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Well, they're trying to get ahead of it, Duff. It's
- 8:19Speaker 1: not easy to do, but it's easier, I think, for
- 8:22Speaker 1: Liam Cohen's team because they've been working this process all
- 8:26Speaker 1: throughout the preseason and regular season.
- 8:28Speaker 3: No, no question about it. Again, he has an excellent
- 8:31Speaker 3: plan that he tweaks, I guess, occasionally, but really follows very,
- 8:36Speaker 3: very myopically, if you will. He's focused on the plan.
- 8:39Speaker 3: He's distributed that to the coaches and the staff and
- 8:42Speaker 3: everybody in this building. I've never seen a building more
- 8:45Speaker 3: in step than what the Jaguars are. I'm talking about
- 8:47Speaker 3: from the equipment guys to the grounds crew to personnel people.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Everybody's in step right now. So Whatever the task, again,
- 8:55Speaker 3: the AAA, all the things you talked about right now,
- 8:57Speaker 3: they're all in on, and that's a sign of an
- 9:00Speaker 3: outstanding football team.
- 9:03Speaker 5: Yeah, Brian, one thing that's always driven me nuts is
- 9:06Speaker 5: when teams talk about we've got to build to beat
- 9:09Speaker 5: the teams in our division. I've always liked teams that
- 9:14Speaker 5: build to have the other teams in the division have
- 9:15Speaker 5: to beat them. And what I'm getting at here in
- 9:18Speaker 5: this long-winded way, the about us thing. I believe in it,
- 9:23Speaker 5: and this team plays like it. They've played to their
- 9:26Speaker 5: identity in the first four games. They dictate how they
- 9:29Speaker 5: want to play. They're turning in, if not already, one
- 9:33Speaker 5: of the best, I think, three or four teams in
- 9:35Speaker 5: the NFL because they believe that what we do, we
- 9:39Speaker 5: can control this game.
- 9:40Speaker 2: You have to play to beat us.
- 9:42Speaker 5: To me, that's the mark of an elite franchise, which
- 9:45Speaker 5: this team is fast becoming. This idea of not worrying
- 9:49Speaker 5: about the opponent plays into that. I think it bodes
- 9:52Speaker 5: really well for the identity of this franchise.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Well, and on the field and off, with all the
- 9:56Speaker 1: distractions around the Eagles this week, as long as the
- 9:59Speaker 1: Jaguars take care of business on their side and focus,
- 10:03Speaker 1: things should go well. Well, those are big things, and
- 10:06Speaker 1: they're presented every week to you by GEHA, Government Employees
- 10:11Speaker 1: Health Association. When we come back, Kai Stevens goes behind
- 10:14Speaker 1: enemy lines to give us a perspective on the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 10:17Speaker 2: That's next on Jags AM.
- 10:29Speaker 7: Welcome into Behind Enemy Lines where we check in with
- 10:31Speaker 7: a media member from the Jaguars opponent team and the
- 10:35Speaker 7: Jaguars and Eagles are headed to London. So we're checking
- 10:37Speaker 7: in with Philadelphia Eagles reporter Fran Duffy for PHLY Sports.
- 10:43Speaker 7: And of course, Fran, we know you know that team
- 10:45Speaker 7: very well. But what's going on right now? Because outside perspective,
- 10:49Speaker 7: they've been so talented for so long and it just
- 10:51Speaker 7: feels like something's going on right now.
- 10:54Speaker 8: Yeah, there's a lot of layers to that answer, Kai.
- 10:57Speaker 8: I think that, look, injuries are a big part of it,
- 11:00Speaker 8: and there's a lot of guys on both sides of
- 11:01Speaker 8: the ball banged up going into this game. They're hoping
- 11:04Speaker 8: to get a few of those guys back, but that
- 11:06Speaker 8: remains to be seen as we get closer to the weekend.
- 11:08Speaker 8: I think the big thing, though, is that you're incorporating
- 11:11Speaker 8: a new offensive philosophy on that side. When you bring
- 11:15Speaker 8: in Sean Mannion, a couple of new members of the
- 11:17Speaker 8: coaching staff, You get rid of a couple of long-term assistants,
- 11:21Speaker 8: guys that were in the building for a decade plus. And,
- 11:23Speaker 8: you know, so there's been a rocky road there to
- 11:26Speaker 8: be kind about it.
- 11:28Speaker 2: They had major.
- 11:29Speaker 8: Issues in pass protection last week and not just from
- 11:31Speaker 8: a talent standpoint but from like an assignment standpoint a
- 11:35Speaker 8: lot of indecision and guys pointing out like not sure
- 11:38Speaker 8: of what they're trying to do and so you know
- 11:40Speaker 8: that's a little bit you know that's a little bit
- 11:42Speaker 8: troublesome in terms of like all right we got you
- 11:45Speaker 8: you would like to see the guys to look a
- 11:46Speaker 8: little bit more prepped than that now the optimistic side
- 11:50Speaker 8: of it is that you point that say all right
- 11:51Speaker 8: like a lot of these are fixable issues and then
- 11:53Speaker 8: you get a player like elaine johnson or you know
- 11:56Speaker 8: get some of these guys back into the lineup what
- 11:58Speaker 8: does that look like you know so maybe you iron
- 11:59Speaker 8: out some of those issues but Yeah, there's been a
- 12:03Speaker 8: lot of issues, especially over the last two weeks. They
- 12:05Speaker 8: have not converted on third down since the first half
- 12:08Speaker 8: of week three. So it's been a rough road.
- 12:11Speaker 7: I know it always can be a little bit critical
- 12:14Speaker 7: in the Northeast with sports teams. But what is the
- 12:17Speaker 7: feeling in terms of they are trying to do something
- 12:19Speaker 7: a little bit new with some of the same personnel?
- 12:21Speaker 7: Is it optimistic that, hey, we can work these kinks out?
- 12:24Speaker 7: Or is it kind of like we're not even sure
- 12:26Speaker 7: if this is exactly right yet?
- 12:29Speaker 8: Yeah, I would say that, you know, the internal pressure
- 12:34Speaker 8: matches the external pressure, right? And that's what, you know, honestly,
- 12:38Speaker 8: that's a marker of a lot of the best programs,
- 12:40Speaker 8: whether it's pro, college, you know, the lacrosse sport, that
- 12:44Speaker 8: you want that level of urgency. And it starts from
- 12:46Speaker 8: the top down. And there is a lot of pressure
- 12:49Speaker 8: in that building.
- 12:49Speaker 2: And so you start 2-0.
- 12:51Speaker 8: And you lose one against Chicago against a third string quarterback.
- 12:55Speaker 8: And you're like, you know, there's a little bit of
- 12:57Speaker 8: angst there. And then you lose this game where you're
- 12:59Speaker 8: up two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on the goal
- 13:02Speaker 8: line with a chance to put it away and go
- 13:04Speaker 8: up three scores. And you somehow lose that game against
- 13:06Speaker 8: a team that you have been unbeaten, you know, or
- 13:08Speaker 8: you have you've never lost to in this regime. And so, yeah,
- 13:12Speaker 8: there's definitely some angst. going into this game if you
- 13:15Speaker 8: had said if you had told people on the outside
- 13:17Speaker 8: like hey like yeah there's going to be a bumpy
- 13:18Speaker 8: road but you know the team's going to go two
- 13:20Speaker 8: and two on this stretch going up against Ben Johnson
- 13:22Speaker 8: and Sean McVay you say like okay that's that's acceptable
- 13:25Speaker 8: but the way that it's looked and the way that
- 13:27Speaker 8: it's felt and the vibes that that is the the
- 13:30Speaker 8: tough thing to shake and so what I personally worry
- 13:32Speaker 8: about is you go on the road you know to
- 13:35Speaker 8: to play across the ocean to go and play a
- 13:37Speaker 8: good jacksonville team that's off to a great start you
- 13:39Speaker 8: know maybe the best defense in the in the afc
- 13:41Speaker 8: if not in the entire nfl with what we've seen
- 13:43Speaker 8: from that group so far if you come back with
- 13:46Speaker 8: another loss that's three straight you play another hot carolina
- 13:49Speaker 8: team uh next week like things could start to unravel
- 13:53Speaker 8: and so uh you hope that you get some of
- 13:55Speaker 8: these guys healthy and you have a better showing here
- 13:56Speaker 8: on sunday.
- 13:57Speaker 7: Certainly important matchup for the Eagles. What have you seen
- 14:00Speaker 7: defensively from them? Obviously, we know there's some injuries in
- 14:04Speaker 7: the secondary, but super talented there and really big up front.
- 14:07Speaker 7: But what have you seen so far from them the
- 14:09Speaker 7: first month or so?
- 14:10Speaker 8: Yeah, what we've seen over the course of the three
- 14:13Speaker 8: years that Vic Fangio has been here is that it's
- 14:14Speaker 8: been relatively slow start and then just kind of a
- 14:17Speaker 8: slow burn. By the time you get to like mid-October,
- 14:20Speaker 8: that's where that unit is usually humming. And I would
- 14:22Speaker 8: say that it was probably the best performance to date.
- 14:25Speaker 8: last week against the Rams. Now, you go down into
- 14:28Speaker 8: the fourth quarter, you give up two touchdown drives to
- 14:31Speaker 8: close out the game. What I will say is that
- 14:33Speaker 8: this defense, they're putting tough spots far too often. And
- 14:37Speaker 8: this offense right now, leading the NFL in three and outs,
- 14:40Speaker 8: especially when you get to the second half of these games,
- 14:43Speaker 8: opposing defenses are shutting down this offense at such a
- 14:46Speaker 8: historic rate after halftime. And so the defense is just
- 14:49Speaker 8: constantly out there on the field. And so when you
- 14:52Speaker 8: factor that with the injuries... It's easy to see why
- 14:55Speaker 8: we've seen some of these, uh, late game touchdown drives
- 14:58Speaker 8: more than we were accustomed to seeing in years prior.
- 15:00Speaker 2: All right.
- 15:01Speaker 7: Going, uh, in this matchup this week, give me an
- 15:03Speaker 7: X factor player, one offense, one defense that are going
- 15:06Speaker 7: to have to have a good game. If the Eagles
- 15:07Speaker 7: want to get a win.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:09Speaker 8: I think with the Eagles, the big one, they just,
- 15:13Speaker 8: they got to figure things out on the offensive line
- 15:14Speaker 8: from a protection standpoint. And at that one, I like,
- 15:17Speaker 8: I'm kind of cheating the answer a little bit because, uh,
- 15:20Speaker 8: I would say probably Drew Kendall is the name to
- 15:22Speaker 8: kind of spotlight there. He is the new starter. After
- 15:25Speaker 8: Landon Dickerson went on injured reserve in week one, they
- 15:28Speaker 8: took Cam Juergens, they slid him over to left guard,
- 15:31Speaker 8: and they inserted Drew Kendall, second-year offensive lineman from Boston College.
- 15:34Speaker 8: And behind the scenes, a lot of the talk was
- 15:37Speaker 8: he's really smart, really great with all the protection calls. Well,
- 15:40Speaker 8: they were an absolute disaster last week. It was an
- 15:43Speaker 8: issue in week three against Chicago as well. So going
- 15:46Speaker 8: up against this Jacksonville front, what Anthony Campanile has put
- 15:48Speaker 8: together over the last couple of years– that's going to
- 15:51Speaker 8: be a tall task for Drew Kendall. So I would
- 15:53Speaker 8: say he would be the X factor on offense. And
- 15:55Speaker 8: then I would say defensively, I think the big thing,
- 15:59Speaker 8: they're hoping to just get more out of this pass rush.
- 16:02Speaker 8: And if you're going to try and derail this offense,
- 16:05Speaker 8: you want to be able to get after Trevor Lawrence.
- 16:06Speaker 8: And so let's look at Jalux Hunt. Nolan Smith came on,
- 16:09Speaker 8: had a couple of sacks, harassed Matthew Stafford routinely last week.
- 16:13Speaker 8: I think Jalux Hunt is a player that To me,
- 16:15Speaker 8: he's still poised for another breakout, another ascension. You know,
- 16:18Speaker 8: he's in year three, had a great summer, and we
- 16:20Speaker 8: just haven't seen it show up from a sack number standpoint.
- 16:23Speaker 8: Jonathan Gerrard enters this week banged up. Let's see if
- 16:26Speaker 8: Jalex Hunt can make that next step here.
- 16:28Speaker 7: All right, Fran, thanks so much for joining us. We're
- 16:30Speaker 7: looking forward to that early matchup this Sunday.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Thanks so much, Kai.
- 16:33Speaker 8: Talk to you soon.
- 16:34Speaker 7: That was Behind the Enemy Line. Stay with us here
- 16:36Speaker 7: on Jags AM coming up after the break. We will
- 16:38Speaker 7: tell you what we think we can expect from this
- 16:40Speaker 7: weekend's matchup.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Jags AM on a Thursday as the Jaguars get set
- 16:50Speaker 1: to head to London. And it's brought to you by Suttoth,
- 16:53Speaker 1: the most trusted and dependable moving company in Florida. Suttoth
- 16:57Speaker 1: is proud to be the official moving company of the Jaguars.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Get a guaranteed quote by visiting Suttoth.com slash Jacksonville.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Thursday morning, you know what that means? Cut them loose.
- 17:09Speaker 1: The coach, Mark Duffner, is all by himself in the
- 17:12Speaker 1: far end of the studio. With a script in his
- 17:15Speaker 1: hand and the monitor at his disposal, go get him, Duff.
- 17:18Speaker 3: I'm going to go after him right now, John and Brian.
- 17:20Speaker 3: First of all, winning ifs, clean game. Last week, penalties
- 17:25Speaker 3: reared their head across the league and certainly here in
- 17:28Speaker 3: Cincinnati when we played against the Bengals right now. Something between...
- 17:32Speaker 3: Not part of our DNA as far as the offense
- 17:35Speaker 3: and defense here in Jacksonville. So, hey, we've got to
- 17:37Speaker 3: play a clean game. That means, again, going, handling this trip,
- 17:42Speaker 3: handling all the travel, handling the environment over there. No
- 17:46Speaker 3: distractions right now. Focus in on doing your job. Playing
- 17:49Speaker 3: with great discipline. Well, how are we going to do
- 17:50Speaker 3: that in terms of the penalty issue? Let's offensively force
- 17:54Speaker 3: the issue on Philadelphia. Let's negate their front seven, darn
- 17:57Speaker 3: good front seven, with utilizing tempo and cadence. Pull them
- 18:01Speaker 3: off sides. Cause them to have issues as far as
- 18:04Speaker 3: penalties are concerned. Or how about our defense on their offense?
- 18:07Speaker 3: Utilize mugs where we rush to bring the linebackers up
- 18:10Speaker 3: or we disguise in the back end. Have them hold
- 18:13Speaker 3: on the ball. Have them have delay of games. Let's
- 18:15Speaker 3: force the issue on them. Let's beat Philadelphia, not ourselves. Okay,
- 18:20Speaker 3: number two, the run game. Control the run. Again, that's
- 18:23Speaker 3: going to be a big important part of the game
- 18:25Speaker 3: right now. As far as Philadelphia is concerned now, they're
- 18:28Speaker 3: about 15th in the league in rushing. They've got two
- 18:30Speaker 3: new running backs. They've had injuries in that position. Shipley
- 18:33Speaker 3: and Harris look like they're going to be their guys
- 18:35Speaker 3: as far as running the ball. So the matchups, and
- 18:38Speaker 3: we've got matchups today, Devon Hamilton, Eric Armstead. Again, you've
- 18:42Speaker 3: got to control the inside right now against an offensive
- 18:45Speaker 3: line that's got some new faces and some issues going on.
- 18:48Speaker 3: We're going to be going against Kendall, their center, a
- 18:50Speaker 3: new guard in Willie Dillard. Lampkins, as far as that's concerned,
- 18:54Speaker 3: a guy that, again, has new playing situations, so we've
- 18:57Speaker 3: got to dominate that line of scrimmage as far as
- 18:59Speaker 3: that's concerned. And then our offense, let's run right at them. Again,
- 19:03Speaker 3: real good players inside, and Jalen Carter, and Jordan Davis,
- 19:06Speaker 3: and two good linebackers, and Vaughn and Campbell right now.
- 19:10Speaker 3: So let's get started running the ball. Let's get tooting
- 19:13Speaker 3: going fast. Let's open up the play-action pass game and
- 19:16Speaker 3: protect our quarterback. Again, control what we can control. And
- 19:20Speaker 3: then number three, turnovers right now. Win the takeaway battle,
- 19:23Speaker 3: win the turnover battle, you win the games. We're 11-2
- 19:26Speaker 3: when we've done that. So a real good recipe for success. Well,
- 19:30Speaker 3: how do we do that? Defense hunting the ball. And
- 19:32Speaker 3: how about pressure on the quarterback? How about Josh Hines-Allen?
- 19:36Speaker 3: How about Trayvon Walker? Again, working against a new right
- 19:40Speaker 3: offensive tackle, Markel Bell. and a new left guard in
- 19:43Speaker 3: Lampkins as far as that's concerned. So let's put stunts.
- 19:46Speaker 3: They struggle with stunts, protecting against pass rush stunts. Pass
- 19:50Speaker 3: rush blitzes. The quarterback struggled against blitz. So let's put
- 19:54Speaker 3: pressure on them in terms of force and takeaways. Sack
- 19:57Speaker 3: fumbles would be something we'd love to get in our
- 19:59Speaker 3: pass rush. Winning the one-on-ones. That's a challenge to Josh Heinz-Allen,
- 20:03Speaker 3: Trayvon Walker, and our front. And then how about in
- 20:06Speaker 3: the back end? Our corners right now. Jeez, Jarrion Jones
- 20:10Speaker 3: and Travis Hunter playing great ball. Top five in the league,
- 20:13Speaker 3: maybe in terms of their production. Going against receivers like Lemon,
- 20:16Speaker 3: like Cooper. These guys right now, they're new right now.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Let's get sticky coverage. Let's catch the balls that are
- 20:21Speaker 3: thrown to us. Let's play Russian coverage working together. Let's
- 20:25Speaker 3: make them play Heinz football. You know what Heinz football is?
- 20:28Speaker 3: Catch up. Let's score fast. Let's score early. Let's start fast.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Let's win this football game.
- 20:34Speaker 2: I thought it was going to be Josh Hines-Allen football.
- 20:37Speaker 3: We'll take that, too.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Duff, something you said at the top.
- 20:41Speaker 5: When penalties have been an issue, and I don't think
- 20:44Speaker 5: penalties are really an issue for this team. They were
- 20:45Speaker 5: the least penalized team going into last game. I sort
- 20:48Speaker 5: of side with Brian. It's more of a league thing.
- 20:50Speaker 5: But can you game plan a less penalty– probable kind
- 20:57Speaker 5: of game to where you, if you feel like it's
- 21:02Speaker 5: been an issue, Is that just about playing fast, about
- 21:05Speaker 5: calling stuff that you know your guys can do?
- 21:08Speaker 2: Talk about that a little bit.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's, John, great point. I think it's
- 21:11Speaker 3: doing what you do best. In other words, looking at
- 21:13Speaker 3: your game plan, how much do we have? Too much.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Do we have things maybe we haven't repped enough? It's
- 21:17Speaker 3: all about execution. Well, the pathway to execution is paved
- 21:20Speaker 3: with repetition. So let's do what we do best to
- 21:24Speaker 3: put that as a sidebar that the penalties and the
- 21:27Speaker 3: self-inflicted issues are not going to be part of our
- 21:29Speaker 3: game plan. And let's also taper the game plan to,
- 21:32Speaker 3: really our strengths of our players, you know, make the
- 21:35Speaker 3: scheme fit them right.
- 21:36Speaker 1: You know, I'm maybe the only person that's disappointed that
- 21:39Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley's not going to play. I was looking forward
- 21:41Speaker 1: to seeing Devon Hamilton and this dominant run defense, how
- 21:45Speaker 1: they were tested, how they would, answer the questions on
- 21:48Speaker 1: that test with Barkley. He's not going to play. Tank
- 21:50Speaker 1: Bigsby's not going to play. You know, there are just
- 21:52Speaker 1: certain matchups. I can remember going up to face the
- 21:55Speaker 1: Baltimore Ravens at various points, and you just realize you
- 21:59Speaker 1: weren't going to get many yards. Even if you had
- 22:02Speaker 1: Fred Taylor that day, they were going to do whatever
- 22:04Speaker 1: it took to sell out and stop the run. Kind
- 22:07Speaker 1: of get that feeling that this Jaguars defense, they might
- 22:09Speaker 1: not have the same numbers as the Ravens do, but
- 22:11Speaker 1: they're in that category. You're not going to run on them,
- 22:14Speaker 1: especially if you don't have Saquon Barkley.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Well, again, I think kudos start with the coaching staff.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Kudos start with the front seven. I mean, Devon Hamilton
- 22:21Speaker 3: playing as good a ball as maybe anybody in the
- 22:23Speaker 3: league as far as that's concerned. And really the linebackers,
- 22:26Speaker 3: Ventrell Miller's production for you. I mean, it's a team effort,
- 22:30Speaker 3: no question about it. And they've got pride in that
- 22:32Speaker 3: right now. That's something that they now really believe in.
- 22:36Speaker 3: It's not a talked about thing. It's something they believe in.
- 22:38Speaker 3: You're not going to run on us no matter what,
- 22:40Speaker 3: no matter where. any place, any time. So again, making
- 22:43Speaker 3: sure that we don't let anything else get in the
- 22:46Speaker 3: focus that we have where Philadelphia isn't that bullseye right now.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Stop that run.
- 22:51Speaker 5: Duff, I think the Eagles are a better run defense
- 22:54Speaker 5: than their stats show. I think they're 23rd or 24th.
- 22:57Speaker 5: I think they're better in that area than maybe that indicates.
- 23:01Speaker 5: Tell me about the Jaguars running game. Brian and I
- 23:04Speaker 5: have talked about it on the air some this week.
- 23:08Speaker 2: It's not.
- 23:09Speaker 5: explosive yet, like they want it to be. But boy,
- 23:13Speaker 5: it feels like it's there. And it feels like through
- 23:15Speaker 5: four games, they're building the building blocks. From a defensive
- 23:22Speaker 5: coach's point of view, why is it playing so well?
- 23:25Speaker 5: And do you feel like this is just the tip
- 23:26Speaker 5: of the iceberg?
- 23:27Speaker 3: Well, I think it's the tip of the iceberg for
- 23:29Speaker 3: a number of reasons. Number one, I think that their structure,
- 23:31Speaker 3: their game plan, the type of run game that they
- 23:34Speaker 3: employ week to week, it's well thought out. They're going
- 23:37Speaker 3: to attack Your scheme, they're going to attack your personnel.
- 23:41Speaker 3: They use gap runs. They use outside zone. They use
- 23:43Speaker 3: inside zone. They give you not so much that it
- 23:47Speaker 3: presents a problem to our offense, but it presents a
- 23:49Speaker 3: problem to the defense, both structure and personnel-wise. And then
- 23:52Speaker 3: you've got guys up front. I mean, our front has
- 23:55Speaker 3: been blocking. Our line has done a heck of a
- 23:57Speaker 3: job in the run game in terms of blocking right now,
- 24:00Speaker 3: moving people off the ball, particularly in three of the
- 24:03Speaker 3: four games we've played. So they've got pride in it
- 24:05Speaker 3: as a unit. And then when you look at the
- 24:08Speaker 3: one-two punch of Basial Tootin and what Chris Rodriguez are
- 24:13Speaker 3: doing right now, geez, Pete, it's unbelievable. And here's another
- 24:15Speaker 3: key component to the run game. Our receivers are blocking
- 24:19Speaker 3: a 25-yard run for a touchdown that Chris Rodriguez had
- 24:22Speaker 3: last week. The primary block was Brian Thomas Jr. knocking
- 24:26Speaker 3: the defensive back off and having a great block downfield.
- 24:30Speaker 3: So it's a team effort. They have bought into knowing
- 24:32Speaker 3: that the run game is going to set up the
- 24:34Speaker 3: pass game, that they've got balance. They've got production. That's
- 24:38Speaker 3: what it's all about.
- 24:39Speaker 2: And one more for you.
- 24:41Speaker 1: When you have a mobile quarterback, and I'm not saying
- 24:43Speaker 1: he's Lamar Jackson because he's not, but he can run.
- 24:47Speaker 1: And if you send the house at him and you
- 24:51Speaker 1: don't get home, you could be in for a big
- 24:53Speaker 1: chunk of ground gained against you. Now, having said that,
- 24:58Speaker 1: last week, the Rams blitzed him unmercilessly. 61% of the time,
- 25:01Speaker 1: he was 5 of 16 unmercilessly. passing the ball against
- 25:06Speaker 1: the Blitz. 31% doesn't get it done in the NFL.
- 25:09Speaker 1: If you're these guys, you feel comfortable, just go get them.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that pressure is certainly going to be
- 25:15Speaker 3: in the thought process for Coach Campanelli and our coaching
- 25:19Speaker 3: staff as far as that's concerned. And I also think
- 25:22Speaker 3: line stunts inside where they're, again, Markel Bell, big giant,
- 25:26Speaker 3: did a nice job in the blocking game. Their right
- 25:28Speaker 3: offense tackle, but struggled picking up pressures. They've got a
- 25:31Speaker 3: new right guard in there now too. So I think
- 25:34Speaker 3: you're going to see Line stunts, I think you're going
- 25:36Speaker 3: to see pressure. And I think they may still try
- 25:41Speaker 3: to run the ball with their quarterback a little bit.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Hertz has got some ability in that regard. He's kind
- 25:45Speaker 3: of tapered off a little bit late in his career
- 25:47Speaker 3: here so far. But also, our quarterback can run the football.
- 25:51Speaker 3: And when he's done that, that's been a real tough
- 25:54Speaker 3: thing for the defense to reckon with.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Coach Mark Duffner. Nice work. Now get back over here.
- 25:59Speaker 1: We'll be back with more on Jags AM right after this. Well,
- 26:19Speaker 1: Jaguars AM is brought to you by the Fields Auto Group.
- 26:23Speaker 1: See Fields first, the Jacksonville's premier luxury auto group.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Go to fieldsauto.com.
- 26:35Speaker 1: On Thursdays, we take a look ahead to Mondays with
- 26:38Speaker 1: Monday's headlines. Today, what we think could happen, what you
- 26:41Speaker 1: might read in a prospective newspaper about the Jaguars-Eagles game
- 26:46Speaker 1: from Tottenham Stadium. John, what you got?
- 26:48Speaker 2: A newspaper, by the way, for younger viewers. Right. I
- 26:52Speaker 2: went with one for us in the U.K. U.S., us, us, U.K.
- 26:58Speaker 2: When you work with words, words are your work.
- 27:02Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's the first of two in the U.K.
- 27:06Speaker 5: If they get them, boy, what good shape they're in.
- 27:09Speaker 5: And I do think it will be a game very
- 27:12Speaker 5: much following Liam's theme of, hey, don't worry about the Eagles.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Whatever ups, downs, whatever.
- 27:19Speaker 5: The worry for this game for me is the circle,
- 27:22Speaker 5: the wagons element for the Eagles. I think the way
- 27:24Speaker 5: the Jaguars will counter that is not worrying about that
- 27:27Speaker 5: and playing their game. So I think they win the
- 27:29Speaker 5: game and get one for U-S-S-S, whatever, in the U.K.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Mark, what you got?
- 27:36Speaker 3: I had affect and protect the quarterback. And what I
- 27:41Speaker 3: mean by that, first and foremost, right now, let's protect
- 27:44Speaker 3: our quarterback. I mean, our quarterback, we used the word
- 27:48Speaker 3: affection there, and we want affection for our quarterback, protecting him.
- 27:51Speaker 3: He's playing at a high level right now, directing the offense,
- 27:54Speaker 3: a lot of confidence, a lot of excellent leadership in
- 27:58Speaker 3: terms of that, making good decisions, getting the ball out,
- 28:00Speaker 3: distributing it to a lot of players. Excellent play by
- 28:03Speaker 3: our quarterback. Protect him. affect their quarterback right now. We
- 28:06Speaker 3: just mentioned that pressure has bothered him. Right now they're
- 28:09Speaker 3: a little bit in disarray. Unsettled offensive line, issues in
- 28:13Speaker 3: terms of receiver Devontae Smith not playing, and new tight
- 28:16Speaker 3: end Zach Ertz. So let's affect their quarterback right now
- 28:20Speaker 3: with Russian coverage working together, being relentless in our pressure
- 28:24Speaker 3: on him, both in run and pass games to make
- 28:26Speaker 3: his life difficult.
- 28:28Speaker 1: And I went with proof of concept. The Jaguars under
- 28:32Speaker 1: Liam Cohen are.
- 28:35Speaker 2: 16-5. They win at home. They win on the road.
- 28:41Speaker 1: They're going to prove that this concept of us works
- 28:46Speaker 1: for them in London. And Liam will get his first
- 28:48Speaker 1: win as the Jaguars head coach in London against the Eagles.
- 28:52Speaker 1: And as John mentioned, listen, hopefully they get two over there.
- 28:55Speaker 2: Can you imagine?
- 28:56Speaker 1: And we can do that on this show because we're
- 28:58Speaker 1: not playing or coaching. Them coming home 5-1 with key
- 29:02Speaker 1: AFC wins here, right? And then they get the bye
- 29:05Speaker 1: week before they host the Colts. I mean, it's heady stuff, right?
- 29:11Speaker 2: Heady stuff. Oh, yeah.
- 29:11Speaker 3: No, it's shaping up the way you want it to
- 29:13Speaker 3: be as far as that's concerned. And, you know, again,
- 29:15Speaker 3: we're taking them one at a time. I'm going to
- 29:17Speaker 3: throw that part of it in there. But I like
- 29:19Speaker 3: the potential of where this team's going right now, and
- 29:22Speaker 3: I think they're heading in the right direction and they're
- 29:24Speaker 3: confident about doing it.
- 29:25Speaker 1: All right, well, we're headed to London, where we will
- 29:28Speaker 1: have coverage both this week and next. On Sunday, when
- 29:31Speaker 1: the Jaguars host the Eagles at Tottenham Stadium, you could
- 29:34Speaker 1: head to Mr. Chubby's Wings over at the Ponte Vedra location.
- 29:38Speaker 1: There's an official away game. watch party there. You can
- 29:41Speaker 1: indulge in the best wings in town. The Roar will
- 29:43Speaker 1: be there, Jacksonville as well. There's the chance for you
- 29:46Speaker 1: to win autographed items and game tickets, all while soaking
- 29:49Speaker 1: up the lively atmosphere with fellow Jags fans.
- 29:52Speaker 5: Mr.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Chubby's Wings is a proud partner of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 29:55Speaker 1: See you from the other side of the pond next week.
- 29:58Speaker 1: We'll be there all week.
