Transcript
- 0:00We are on chapter 10 of the book of Isaiah.
- 0:04Before we start, let's pray. Dear God, please be with us as
- 0:08we read through this chapter and help us understand and receive
- 0:13wisdom from what we read. We ask for this in Jesus name.
- 0:19Chapter 10. Woe to those who make unjust
- 0:22laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees to deprive
- 0:27the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the
- 0:30oppressed of My people, making widows their prey and robbing
- 0:34the fatherless. What will you do on the day of
- 0:37reckoning, when disaster comes from afar?
- 0:40To whom will you run for help? Where will you leave your
- 0:43riches? Nothing will remain but to
- 0:46cringe among the captives or fall among the slain.
- 0:50Yet for all this, his anchor is not turned away.
- 0:52His hand is still upraised. Woe to the Assyrian.
- 0:57The rod of my anger, in whose hand is the club of my wrath.
- 1:05So there's a couple things right there.
- 1:07This is verse 5. Woe to the Assyrian.
- 1:10So God is going to, he's pronouncing judgment on his
- 1:15people and he's using the Assyrian.
- 1:18So we remember when the northern Kingdom and the southern Kingdom
- 1:22were split apart, first the northern Kingdom called Israel
- 1:27was conquered by the Assyrians, and then after that the tribe of
- 1:33Judah or the southern Kingdom of Judah was then conquered by the
- 1:37Babylonians. And I think ultimately then it
- 1:40was the Assyrians after that too.
- 1:42So this as we read through it, I will comment, but there's a lot
- 1:48of it that really sounds like it's one of those foreshadowing
- 1:51prophecies or a double fulfillment type prophecy where
- 1:55it it meant something at the time it was stated.
- 1:59But there are some things in here that are definitely future.
- 2:03And so I think this actually applies to all of us because the
- 2:08things that I will point out sound like it's the future from
- 2:11now. So is God going to use someone
- 2:16from the land of Assyria? Again, that's northern Iraq, SE,
- 2:23Turkey, Syria, Iran, all that kind of area that at one time
- 2:29had been the land of Assyria. So will God use that?
- 2:35And it's interesting because God is using.
- 2:38So this is what happens is we find in the Bible that God gives
- 2:43everybody free will and some people choose to do evil with
- 2:47that free will. And God sometimes brings
- 2:53judgment on his children or disciplines his children when
- 2:58they turn away from him and they worship, they get into idolatry.
- 3:03And idolatry is something we should really all pay attention
- 3:06to because even if we are not like worshipping statues,
- 3:10because that's what I used to think idolatry was.
- 3:12And I was like, no, I don't have any idolatry.
- 3:15But today, anything that we put as a priority above God, if God
- 3:21is not our number one priority, that's probably our idol.
- 3:26And, and it's, I mean, for real, it really is.
- 3:29And that's something that a lot of people probably don't even
- 3:32think about. But it's, it's worth saying
- 3:34because we need to remember that it's, it's, I guess in a way
- 3:40it's, it's hard because we don't see God and it takes effort on
- 3:46our part to communicate with God.
- 3:48God is trying. There's lots of different ways
- 3:51that he communicates with us, but if we're not in tune with
- 3:54that, we don't, we miss out on it and we don't see it.
- 3:57But today, God still communicates with people.
- 4:00There are things that happen that when you get closer to God,
- 4:03you just realize that it could have never ever happened except
- 4:06for God. That's the only way it would
- 4:08have happened. And it's a good thing.
- 4:09It's like a blessing. And you know, sometimes when
- 4:13people have been saved from some disaster and there's just, it's
- 4:17like a supernatural way, like it just makes 0 logical sense how
- 4:22they were actually survived or saved from being involved in
- 4:25something tragic. And that's God.
- 4:29And there's, there's lots of different times and God still
- 4:32speaks to people and dreams. Lots of people are having dreams
- 4:35more and more. And lots of children are now
- 4:37having dreams and claiming to see Jesus and talking about
- 4:43Jesus and having like open visions seeing Jesus.
- 4:46I mean, we are in this incredible time where I, it does
- 4:51really seem like God is pouring out his spirit on people, even
- 4:56children. And it says that in Joel, I
- 4:58think chapter 3 where it's, you know, old men will dream dreams,
- 5:02young men will see visions, men and women will prophecy.
- 5:05So I mean, it's, it's, it is happening.
- 5:09That is definitely happening right now.
- 5:11So anyway, getting back to the scripture, it talks about using
- 5:18God using the Assyrian. So the Assyrian is against
- 5:21Israel and actually those lands today are pretty much against
- 5:26Israel. So I don't know if God will use
- 5:30an Assyrian again and but we will just have to wait and see.
- 5:35But he said, whose hand is the club of my wrath?
- 5:38So God can use other people's intentions to bring about wrath
- 5:44when people have turned away from him.
- 5:46So the question is, I mean, This is why it's so important right
- 5:49now. We could be in this moment of
- 5:51revival since people are having dreams like this.
- 5:55And, and Jesus, like he, God is so compassionate and merciful
- 5:59that maybe he's just calling us right now as a wake up call.
- 6:04We've kind of been asleep. We haven't been paying attention
- 6:07to God. God's been our number 23456 on
- 6:10our list, you know, and he really needs to be #1 on our
- 6:14list. And if he isn't number one on
- 6:17our list, then we need to re evaluate and we need to get
- 6:22closer to God. Because I believe that this is a
- 6:25warning time. And it, it could be like a, a
- 6:28revival time where it's just that there's a lot of like
- 6:32biblically prophetic things in the world that are seeming to
- 6:37happen right now. And they could be, they could
- 6:39drag out over a long period of time or they could like
- 6:43instantly, virtually, I mean almost instantly be fulfilled
- 6:48like this year, next year, something like that.
- 6:51Like it could be really soon, we won't know until hindsight, but
- 6:55now is not the time to delay that.
- 6:58Because we are seeing these signs.
- 7:00We are seeing the signs that Jesus talked about in Matthew
- 7:03chapter 24. And because we are seeing those
- 7:07signs, it's it's so important for people to prioritize our
- 7:12relationship with God every single day.
- 7:16OK, so going back, so God is saying, I send him against a
- 7:20godless nation. I dispatch him against the
- 7:24people who anger me to seize loot and snatch plunder and to
- 7:28trample them down like mud in the streets.
- 7:32But this is not what he intends. This is not what he has in mind.
- 7:37His purpose is to destroy, to put an end to many nations.
- 7:43So when I've read that, I was thinking like, even though God's
- 7:47going to use the Assyrian against Israel, he did back
- 7:50then, and he may in the future, I'm not sure, but he said that
- 7:55his purpose is to destroy. And that made me think of what
- 7:58Satan Satan's purpose is, to kill and destroy and to put an
- 8:02end to many nations. Do we have any nations that come
- 8:08to mind that want to conquer the world, to put an end to many
- 8:13nations? Would they prefer to have
- 8:15everybody submit to them and be the one that would rule
- 8:19everything? I think there's probably a few
- 8:21nations that are that would fit that description.
- 8:25And that made me think about the beast with, you know, 10 heads,
- 8:29the Kingdom, the last, the last Kingdom that Daniel dreams
- 8:33about. I know we haven't covered that
- 8:35yet, but many people know about that.
- 8:36There's like 4 beasts which are 4 kingdoms.
- 8:39They are representative of that. That was a dream he had.
- 8:42And this last Kingdom it, there's multiple kings that are
- 8:46part of it. And so these are things just to
- 8:50keep an eye out for. Are not my commanders all kings,
- 8:54he says. So this is this is like the
- 8:57Assyrian now when if you think about in the past, if people say
- 9:02this was already fulfilled. So when did an Assyrian have all
- 9:08these commanders as kings that were going after putting an end
- 9:13to nations and destroying everything?
- 9:16To me it sounds like this is where it's future.
- 9:19It sounds like because it talks about the 10 kings and then one
- 9:23is 1 uproots three of them and he becomes the 8th.
- 9:29And so there's there's multiple people who are involved in this
- 9:33last Kingdom and they are set on conquering.
- 9:37And anyway, so it says has not Kalno fared like Char Charmish,
- 9:45Karmish. Now, these are all of these
- 9:47places that he talks about are in like Turkey or Syria.
- 9:53They're next to Euphrates River. I was looking up where they
- 9:56were. And so they're like around
- 9:59Syria. Yeah, all of these are near
- 10:02Syria that he mentions. So has not Kalno fared like
- 10:08Charmiche is not Hemeth like Arpad and Samaria like Damascus?
- 10:15So Samaria is the West Bank area today and Damascus is in Syria.
- 10:21So he's doing a comparison of all these and I don't know Lanic
- 10:26about I mean, Samaria was the capital of the northern Kingdom
- 10:31of Israel and that was conquered.
- 10:33And I'm not really sure about Damascus, but Damascus in
- 10:37prophecy it says that someday Damascus will no longer be and
- 10:41that's kind of critical right now.
- 10:43This is July 18th, 2025. Because there's, there's a lot
- 10:46of activity right now between Israel and Syria.
- 10:49And so I'm not sure, you know, everybody's kind of watching
- 10:53Damascus because it says at some point in the future Damascus is
- 10:57going to be gone. So as my hand sees the Kingdom
- 11:01of idols, kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and
- 11:07Samaria. So I know back then they had
- 11:10they had images. But I wonder like in the future
- 11:14that talks about the mark of the beast and setting up an image
- 11:17that could speak. So again, this is like a
- 11:21foreshadowing of a future event as well.
- 11:24Shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images as I dealt with
- 11:29Samaria and her idols? When the Lord has finished all
- 11:35his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he will say I will
- 11:40punish the king of Assyria for this is what he's getting
- 11:44punished for. The willful pride of his heart
- 11:49and the haughty look in his eyes, the proud look in the
- 11:53eyes, the haughty look in the eyes.
- 11:55That is something that it says God hates.
- 11:57And I forgot which book that's in, but there is scripture that
- 12:01says there are 7 things that God hates are 6 things that God
- 12:07hates and seven that are detestable to him.
- 12:09And then it lists through these things.
- 12:11And so anyway, he is, this is just pay attention to what God's
- 12:17doing here. He's he's upset with Israel
- 12:20because they are being idolatrous and they've turned
- 12:23away from him and they're a godless nation and they're not
- 12:26relying on him. They have no relationship with
- 12:28him. And so he's upset and he's going
- 12:32to bring Assyria to wake them up and to bring about his wrath,
- 12:38his anger about about this condition that they're in and to
- 12:42wake them up. But he's not happy about what
- 12:47Assyria wants to do. He's allowing this to happen,
- 12:50but that's not what he ultimately wants.
- 12:52And Assyria wants to take it a lot further than God wants.
- 12:56God wants it to wake him up. Syria just wants to have them
- 13:00completely destroyed. And think about the chance that
- 13:03we're going around, you know, a couple years ago, from the river
- 13:07to the sea and that kind of stuff.
- 13:09I mean, that's the annihilation of Israel.
- 13:11That's very similar to what was happening back here.
- 13:13The Assyrians, you know, they just wanted to take it over to
- 13:17conquer it all. And anyway, so God is, you know,
- 13:22he says he's going to use that. He's going to use their will,
- 13:26and he has willful pride, but he's going to punish him for
- 13:28doing it. So he's going to let it happen
- 13:30for a bit, but then he's going to punish him.
- 13:34So for the haughty looking in slice four, he says, so this is
- 13:37the Assyrian he's referring to. By the strength of my hand, I
- 13:41have done this. And by my wisdom, because I have
- 13:44understanding, I remove the boundaries of nations.
- 13:48I plundered their treasures like a mighty one.
- 13:51I subdued their kings. And when I read that, I was
- 13:56thinking, boy, is that the future?
- 13:58Because there are these, I think, 10 kings in the end, but
- 14:04one is subdued or three of them are subdued and replaced.
- 14:09And so I was wondering like, is it the horn that subdues the
- 14:11three where he says, like a mighty one, I subdue their kings
- 14:16and I remove the boundaries of nations.
- 14:18Does that mean like a global governance?
- 14:21Because that is what the future, that's what the last Kingdom is
- 14:26going to desire to have control over everything.
- 14:31So again, this seems like it. You know, when Assyria was
- 14:35conquering Israel, they weren't, it didn't seem like they were
- 14:41looking to do like to expand everywhere, unless this was just
- 14:45an ancient thing that they always wanted to conquer
- 14:48everywhere and they just never were able to, just like Israel
- 14:51never expanded their territory to what God originally gave
- 14:55them. So anyway, this Assyrians very
- 14:58proud and he thinks he's really wise and he says, I removed the
- 15:02boundaries of nations and I plunder their treasures like a
- 15:05mighty one. I subdued their kings as one
- 15:08reaches into a nest. So my hand reached for the
- 15:11wealth of the nations. As people gathered abandoned
- 15:14eggs, I so I gathered all the countries.
- 15:19Not one of them flapped a wing or opened its mouth to chirp.
- 15:23So it's like all these people just submitted to him and and
- 15:26that's what there's going to be this like horrible wicked ruler
- 15:30it that's prophesied about in the end that people submit to
- 15:35does and then here is what God is saying.
- 15:37Does the axe raise itself above the person who swings it or the
- 15:43saw boast against the one who uses it as if a rod were to
- 15:48wield to the person who lifts it up or a club brandish the one
- 15:52who is not wood, Therefore, so God's saying, you know, I'm the
- 15:56one that's using you. He's kind of putting him in his
- 15:59place, the king of Assyria. He's like, no, no, I'm in
- 16:03control of all this. This guy thinks he's going to do
- 16:05all this and he has much greater intent that I'm going to let him
- 16:10do. I'm going to let him punish
- 16:11them, but he's not going to do all that he wants to do and he's
- 16:15going to be punished. So God's like saying, wait a
- 16:18minute, he, you are not in control, just like none of us
- 16:21are in control. God is the ultimate one,
- 16:24therefore the Lord, the Lord Almighty will send a wasting
- 16:29disease upon his sturdy warriors.
- 16:32So this is very much like God uses plagues to send upon
- 16:37people. So there was a disease on the
- 16:40Assyrian that the study Bible does elaborate on that so I will
- 16:43read that a little bit later. Under his pomp a fire will be
- 16:47kindled like a blazing flame. The light of Israel will become
- 16:52a fire, their holy 1A flame. I think this refers to Jesus.
- 16:58This is verse 17 of chapter 10. The light of Israel will become
- 17:02a fire, their holy 1A flame. So who's the holy one that
- 17:07becomes a flame? Who is someone that's described
- 17:10in the Bible with eyes red as fire and when it comes to
- 17:15judgement time, that's Jesus. So I believe this is talking
- 17:18about Jesus. It says in a single day it will
- 17:21burn and consume his thorns and his Breers.
- 17:25When Jesus comes back, when he returns, he's coming back for
- 17:28wrath. This is not, you know, the the
- 17:33loving, kind person that he was because he came to save people
- 17:40the first time, and now when he comes back, this is for wrath.
- 17:45The splendor of his forest and fertile trees.
- 17:48It will completely destroy, as when a sick person wastes away,
- 17:52and the remaining trees of his forest will be so few that a
- 17:55child could write them down. In that day, the remnant of
- 18:00Israel, the survivors of Jacob, will no longer rely on him who
- 18:05struck them down, but they will truly rely on the Lord, the Holy
- 18:10One of Israel. A remnant will return.
- 18:14A remnant of Jacob will return to the mighty God.
- 18:19I wonder if this is the 144,012 thousand from each tribe that's
- 18:24talked about in the Book of Revelation though.
- 18:28Your people will be like though, your people be like the sand by
- 18:33the sea, Israel. Only a remnant will return.
- 18:37Destruction has been decreed. Now again, this could be a
- 18:40double prophecy where it probably there were people that
- 18:44were exiled and then came back. But I also think there's going
- 18:48to be when it talks about the Holy One of Israel, Jesus.
- 18:52Jesus isn't reigning from Jerusalem yet.
- 18:55So I think this is a future prophecy.
- 18:58Destruction has been decreed, overwhelming and righteous.
- 19:01The Lord, the Lord Almighty will carry out the destruction
- 19:04decreed upon the whole land. Therefore, this is what the Lord
- 19:08the Lord Almighty says. My people who live in Zion, do
- 19:11not be afraid of the Assyrians, Turkey, Iraq, Iran who beat you
- 19:17with a rod and lift up a club against you as Egypt did.
- 19:21Now this is like a reference back to the slavery they were in
- 19:25in Egypt when Moses delivered them from slavery.
- 19:30Very soon my anger will end and my wrath will be directed to
- 19:35their destruction. The Lord Almighty will lash them
- 19:39with a whip, as when He struck down Midian at the rock of Oreb,
- 19:43and He will raise his staff over the waters as he did in Egypt.
- 19:48Like when God parted the seas for them to escape, so God is in
- 19:52control. This is a reference back to the
- 19:53Book of Exodus. In that day their burden will be
- 19:57lifted from your shoulders, their yoke from your neck.
- 20:00The yoke will the yoke will be broken because you have grown so
- 20:05fat. They enter AF.
- 20:08It's just like central Palestine.
- 20:10They pass through Migron, which is the Hill Country.
- 20:13They store supplies at Mikmash. This is about like northeast of
- 20:18Jerusalem. A lot of these cities are within
- 20:218 miles of Jerusalem that are being talked about, so I won't
- 20:24mention where they are, but I had to look them up earlier.
- 20:27They go over the past and say we will camp overnight at Geeba
- 20:31Rama. Treble trembles.
- 20:33Gibia of Saul flees. Cry out daughter Galem.
- 20:37Listen Leishesh. Now Leishesh is a city that used
- 20:43to be called. It used to be called Dan and
- 20:45then was renamed. So I don't know if there's some
- 20:48connection there. Poor Anna, Anna thought.
- 20:52Medmena is in flight. The people of Gibbon take over
- 20:56this day. They will halt at Nob.
- 20:59They will shake their fist at the mount of daughter of
- 21:02daughter Zion at the hill of Jerusalem.
- 21:05See the Lord. The Lord Almighty will lop off
- 21:09the bows, the bows with great power.
- 21:12The lofty trees will be felled, The tall ones will be brought
- 21:16low. He will cut down the forest
- 21:18thickets with an axe. Lebanon will fall before the
- 21:23mighty 1. So Lebanon still exists.
- 21:26So Lebanon will fall before the mighty one again.
- 21:30This is why I think it's future prophecy.
- 21:32So that's the end of chapter 10. I'm going to read the questions
- 21:36and answers and then we'll wrap that up.
- 21:38So let's see who is speaking in 10/8 verses through 11.
- 21:45Isaiah puts his quotation, as well as the quota quotation in
- 21:49verses 13 through 14 in the mouth of the king of Assyria.
- 21:53Assyria and its boastful monarchs certainly had no
- 21:56intention of serving the punitive ends of the God of
- 22:01Israel. Rather, they had sought conquest
- 22:04and territorial expansion for their own glory.
- 22:07Kalina was a city in northern Aram or Syria, and Hameth and
- 22:12Arpad were in the same vicinity. Karmesh was an ancient city on
- 22:17the Euphrates River. Samaria and Damascus were the
- 22:21capitals of Israel and Aram, respectively.
- 22:24All these areas submitted to Assyria by about 7:17 BC.
- 22:31What was what wasting disease struck Assyrians?
- 22:34This sickness could be symbolic of the Assyrians army
- 22:37destruction. It could also refer to an actual
- 22:40plague which may have been the reason for the death of 185,000
- 22:45Assyrian soldiers during the time seen.
- 22:47A cherub threatened Jerusalem in 701 BC.
- 22:51The Greek historian Herodotus says the Assyrian army was
- 22:56afflicted with a plague near Egypt.
- 22:59The Jewish historian Josephus notes that mice and rats were on
- 23:04the battlefield. Rodents often carried the
- 23:07bubonic plague. What remnant was Isaiah
- 23:11referring to? This remnant of Israel could
- 23:14refer to those who survived the Assyrian invasion of Judah in
- 23:18seven O 1 BC and or those who returned to Judah following the
- 23:22Babylonians destruction of Jerusalem and 586 BC.
- 23:26Some think this refers to a time beyond even when a remnant of
- 23:31people would return to a deep trust in God.
- 23:36Why not fear the cruel Assyrian? What Judas should have feared
- 23:40was not the Assyrians or any other enemy, but the Holy One of
- 23:45Israel. Here Isaiah was prophesying that
- 23:48a believing remnant would be saved.
- 23:51Even in the midst of judgement, God offered comfort to His
- 23:54people. He called them to faith, not
- 23:57fear. Does God pour out his wrath
- 23:59today? The media communicates events
- 24:02quickly and from obscure areas of the world, expanding our
- 24:06knowledge of tragedies and disasters.
- 24:08But we can't judge whether one city is more sinful than another
- 24:11just because of an earthquake destroys one while the other is
- 24:14prosperous. Isaiah tells us that the
- 24:17Assyrians were defeated because of God's wrath.
- 24:20We also know that near the end of the age there will be
- 24:24worldwide desolation. What does growing fat have to do
- 24:30with a broken yolk? This is a prediction of Judah's
- 24:33deliverance from Assyrian oppression.
- 24:35King Hezekiah had to pay tribute to keep Assyria from conquering
- 24:39Jerusalem. God promised that the heavy
- 24:42burden of yoke of oppression would be lifted from Judah.
- 24:45The oxen. God's people, would grow so fat
- 24:47or heavy that the Assyrian yoke would be broken by the strength
- 24:51of the oxen. In this way, God would empower
- 24:53His people. And why did Isaiah list these
- 24:58places? As Isaiah's original audience
- 25:00heard these details of the invasion, the tension would have
- 25:03grown. These places are names trace the
- 25:05advancing Assyrian forces as they approach Jerusalem from
- 25:09north to South. Then, just when the end was
- 25:12insight, God decisively stepped in to halt the invaders at Nob,
- 25:18a Foothill of Mount Zion. Why did God punish Lebanon for
- 25:25Judah sin? Lebanon itself was not involved
- 25:28in the Assyrians March. This prophecy refers to the
- 25:31Assyrians destruction when they invaded Judah.
- 25:34The forest of Lebanon were known for their towering cedar trees,
- 25:38some of which Solomon had purchased for the temple.
- 25:41The trees and Lebanon itself had become a symbol of grandeur.
- 25:44This image of greatness applied figuratively, figuratively to
- 25:49the vast Assyrian army, well, I also think it means that Lebanon
- 25:54will fall before the mighty one. I think it may also be a
- 25:57literal. It could be a metaphorical and a
- 26:00literal because it does talk about Tyre in the Bible, in
- 26:04Bible prophecy. So we can learn from other
- 26:07prophets the in totality. I mean, both of there's so many
- 26:12different prophets and you learn something a little bit
- 26:15different, a little perspective from each one.
- 26:18So anyway, that concludes Chapter 10 and hope you come
- 26:23back and subscribe and join us for Chapter 11 next time.
