Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie and Samantha.
- 0:06Speaker 2: I'm welcome to stuff I Never told you, production by
- 0:08Speaker 2: Heart Radio, and welcome to another edition of Happy Hour.
- 0:22Speaker 2: As always, if you choose to drink or whatever you're
- 0:24Speaker 2: choosing to do, please do so responsibly.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Samantha, what are you up to?
- 0:30Speaker 3: So my voice is still not back if you're listening
- 0:34Speaker 3: to this in real time, we had to pause recording,
- 0:39Speaker 3: but my voice is still doing this. So trying to
- 0:42Speaker 3: remedy that. I am drinking some throat coat tea with
- 0:46Speaker 3: my citrone. We'll see how this works.
- 0:51Speaker 4: What about you?
- 0:53Speaker 1: Yes, I'm on my go to red one.
- 0:58Speaker 2: It has been the there's a lot of seasonal changes.
- 1:04Speaker 1: The weather is all over the place right now. But
- 1:07Speaker 1: I'm feeling good.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I'm I'm feeling nice and yesterday I got a lot
- 1:13Speaker 2: of stuff done, which.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Makes me feel I feel really good about myself.
- 1:17Speaker 2: But this episode is kind of a rambly one, and
- 1:22Speaker 2: it does sort of relate to the first Happy Hour
- 1:25Speaker 2: I ever did.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Dead Inside even though I sound so, I was like, oh,
- 1:32Speaker 1: I feel good.
- 1:33Speaker 2: So last Friday, it was a Friday, the thirteenth, and
- 1:39Speaker 2: it was my quarantinniversary, which I'm a weirdo that celebrates
- 1:42Speaker 2: that every year and I have a tradition around it,
- 1:46Speaker 2: and also Saint Patrick's Day I now associate with vaccines
- 1:53Speaker 2: because that's when I got my vaccine. I got it
- 1:55Speaker 2: on Saint Patrick's Day. And in the picture I'm wearing
- 1:58Speaker 2: like my Saint Patrick's Day shirt. But I had this
- 2:01Speaker 2: whole plan and I was going to get the food
- 2:04Speaker 2: that I always get for Quarantine University, and I was
- 2:09Speaker 2: just so excited about it.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I was going to watch the movies, which I did do.
- 2:13Speaker 2: And before I get into this story, I just want
- 2:16Speaker 2: to say everything is fine. Okay, everything's fine. But my
- 2:22Speaker 2: sleep schedule has been all over the place. I've said
- 2:25Speaker 2: that recently. I will wake up at three am and
- 2:28Speaker 2: get up, not like just try to go back to sleep.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I'll just get up.
- 2:33Speaker 2: And in some days occasionally I do sleep until like
- 2:38Speaker 2: nine thirty. And so on Friday thirteenth, March thirteenth, I
- 2:44Speaker 2: slept until nine thirty. It's pretty rare, but it does happen.
- 2:48Speaker 2: And I woke up and I had like thirty messages
- 2:51Speaker 2: on my phone, which, as you know, is a terrifying circumstance.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And it turns out that the Lovely neighborhood cat that
- 3:06Speaker 2: I want to adopt was hit by a car. Oh no, yes,
- 3:12Speaker 2: he is fine. Like I said, it's okay. But there
- 3:16Speaker 2: were all of these messages on our group, like our
- 3:20Speaker 2: apartment group chat, and because somebody's phone for some reason,
- 3:29Speaker 2: it sends me like an extra text when they emoji anything.
- 3:33Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:34Speaker 1: It was just a lot of text, and I'm like.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Scrolling through this drama trying to because the cat. I've
- 3:45Speaker 2: learned a lot about this cat. Okay, First of all,
- 3:48Speaker 2: his name is Blue and he's gone through two owners
- 3:54Speaker 2: on the street. But I guess he's just a neighborhood cat.
- 3:59Speaker 2: But everybody was trying to figure out, like what do
- 4:01Speaker 2: we do the cat is hurt. We need to know
- 4:05Speaker 2: from the past owners what they're gonna do or if
- 4:07Speaker 2: they're still the owner. And somebody in the apartment building,
- 4:12Speaker 2: a very kind person took the cat to the vet
- 4:16Speaker 2: and did what the past owner said to do. I'm
- 4:22Speaker 2: hesitating on this and I'm going to get into this.
- 4:25Speaker 2: This is why I want to talk about it. But
- 4:26Speaker 2: I guess that they kind of relinquished ownership when this happened,
- 4:32Speaker 2: so they were the owner at the point, but now
- 4:37Speaker 2: it seems they're like, nope, but not my responsibility anyway.
- 4:44Speaker 2: So the person took the cat in. The cat went
- 4:49Speaker 2: through all these procedures, but I think because of the cost,
- 4:56Speaker 2: the owner didn't want to do certain things. So cat
- 5:01Speaker 2: comes back to our apartment where he currently is living
- 5:06Speaker 2: and healing. But this is where I was kind of
- 5:13Speaker 2: got interesting because two things happened. One is that our
- 5:18Speaker 2: group chat kind of spiraled into a debate about pet ownership.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Yes, about like.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Because the person who took the cat to the vet
- 5:31Speaker 2: was expressing rightfully, so I think anger that the owner
- 5:38Speaker 2: was refusing to pay up and kind of was like,
- 5:41Speaker 2: now it's it's your cat now. And then my landlord
- 5:48Speaker 2: came in and he was like, let's publicly shame them.
- 5:53Speaker 1: And then.
- 5:55Speaker 2: The person who brought the cat in was like, no,
- 5:58Speaker 2: I do not want to be a part of the
- 6:00Speaker 2: public shaming.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Right my landlord he does not mess around with that stuff.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I one time somebody accidentally messed with the door and
- 6:13Speaker 2: he sent out a message to all of us that said,
- 6:15Speaker 2: if I ever find out who that is, we will
- 6:16Speaker 2: not come back from that.
- 6:18Speaker 1: And I was like, oh my gosh, what he's intense.
- 6:22Speaker 2: But it goes back to I did an episode about
- 6:26Speaker 2: him Forever. It was another happy hour where I was saying, like,
- 6:30Speaker 2: men don't get it, because I feel like a lot
- 6:32Speaker 2: of times he just says these things, and I'm like,
- 6:35Speaker 2: do you not realize, like you're your grown up man
- 6:38Speaker 2: and I'm a young woman and you're like barging into
- 6:41Speaker 2: my apartment, Like I don't I don't think. But anyway,
- 6:45Speaker 2: she it was a woman who took in the cat.
- 6:48Speaker 2: She was very like, do not involve me in this
- 6:50Speaker 2: public because she'll know it's me because they've been in contact.
- 6:56Speaker 2: But she was also saying she did and blame the
- 7:00Speaker 2: person who hit the cat because the person who hit
- 7:02Speaker 2: the cat got out of the car. And she said,
- 7:05Speaker 2: and I've thought this too, because this is how my
- 7:07Speaker 2: cat died. You know, if you have a cat that's
- 7:09Speaker 2: just wandering around on a busy street, it's it's a risk.
- 7:15Speaker 2: It's a risk. And even like I don't drive my
- 7:18Speaker 2: car off and but every time I did, I would
- 7:20Speaker 2: look under and like make sure anyway, there's there's now
- 7:26Speaker 2: a go fund me for the cat, and uh, it's
- 7:31Speaker 2: posted all on the all all along the street, and
- 7:34Speaker 2: I've seen people scanning for it, and I donated to it,
- 7:37Speaker 2: and people have donated a lot of them. Really, yes, yes,
- 7:42Speaker 2: And I didn't realize gofund me took that big of
- 7:44Speaker 2: a cut.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I knew they took a cut, but.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Wow, how much it was like a third or maybe
- 7:50Speaker 2: a little bit more than a third.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Wow, relly. Yeah.
- 7:56Speaker 2: But anyway, there's a GoFundMe for this cat and it's
- 8:00Speaker 2: going well. But he's gonna have to have his tail amputated.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Oh no, yes, I know, I know, but the cat
- 8:08Speaker 1: is as well cared for.
- 8:10Speaker 2: We're getting updates like every day I had a picture,
- 8:12Speaker 2: were saying yesterday, looks good, looks healthy. Another reason I
- 8:27Speaker 2: wanted to talk about this, this long ramble and why
- 8:30Speaker 2: it relates to the first half hour did dead inside is.
- 8:33Speaker 1: That my apartment building.
- 8:36Speaker 2: When I first moved in, I was very active about, like,
- 8:42Speaker 2: let me meet my neighbors and stuff. But it's a
- 8:46Speaker 2: very a lot of people move in and out very quickly,
- 8:49Speaker 2: and so over time I just kind of stopped and
- 8:51Speaker 2: I was like, well, it could be gone in a month,
- 8:53Speaker 2: which did happen with Chris, who I did not like,
- 8:56Speaker 2: so I was glad to see him go. But but
- 9:02Speaker 2: I just stopped doing it, and now there's this group
- 9:05Speaker 2: chat and I don't know anybody in the group chat.
- 9:08Speaker 2: It's that one person and I because I slept late
- 9:11Speaker 2: that day, I missed the whole thing and everybody had
- 9:16Speaker 2: already jumped in and been like, I'll.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Do this and I'll save the cat. What do you need?
- 9:21Speaker 2: And then I'm like the jerk who didn't say anything.
- 9:29Speaker 4: But you actually love this cat.
- 9:30Speaker 1: I know I love the cat. I love the cat,
- 9:33Speaker 1: but it gets worse, Samantha. Okay, so.
- 9:38Speaker 2: I my friend Katie comes over frequently. She somehow got
- 9:44Speaker 2: involved in this situation before I did.
- 9:47Speaker 1: But yes, it's complicated. I don't want to talk about.
- 9:51Speaker 2: It, but no, my friend has involved her so more
- 9:58Speaker 2: than I had at that point. But it also felt
- 10:01Speaker 2: weird because I was like, am I too late to
- 10:03Speaker 2: jump in? And you know, what do I do? Because
- 10:08Speaker 2: I had to work and all this stuff. And so
- 10:11Speaker 2: I did officially enter the chat yesterday where I was
- 10:15Speaker 2: like I've seen these gofund me things and they're working, yay,
- 10:20Speaker 2: and now I'm in there. But I just feel like
- 10:25Speaker 2: everybody was thinking that one girl who never introduces herself
- 10:30Speaker 2: doesn't even care about this cat.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Which is funny because you would have taken in the cat.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I would have taken in the cat.
- 10:38Speaker 2: But now now I realized the cat pretty much lived
- 10:42Speaker 2: here anyway. And I had suspected and I said, I
- 10:45Speaker 2: knew there at least two people in the building that
- 10:47Speaker 2: were caring for the cat, but I didn't know that
- 10:50Speaker 2: our landlord was cool with it, because when I moved in,
- 10:52Speaker 2: he said no pets. So I was trying to be
- 10:54Speaker 2: like chill and not alert anyone to the situation. But
- 10:59Speaker 2: the landlord is very invested in this whole thing.
- 11:02Speaker 3: He loves, Oh my god, because he likes.
- 11:09Speaker 4: To like argue with the neighbors a lot he does.
- 11:12Speaker 1: He does.
- 11:13Speaker 2: He asked me to move my car back into its spot, uh,
- 11:17Speaker 2: because that way no one can block the driveway.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Now he seems to care about the cat a lot.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Actually nice.
- 11:26Speaker 4: That cat is really lovable. I met at once and
- 11:30Speaker 4: I loved it.
- 11:31Speaker 2: I love the cat too, But I feel bad about
- 11:35Speaker 2: that that I didn't even know it was like our
- 11:37Speaker 2: apartment cat.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I had my suspicions you invited him in, I did.
- 11:41Speaker 2: He loves my I have like a welcome matt that
- 11:45Speaker 2: has like really fuzzy, like it's really fuzzy, and he
- 11:49Speaker 2: loves to just get on it and roll on it.
- 11:51Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, there you go. So I just opened
- 11:54Speaker 2: the door and there he is.
- 11:59Speaker 1: But I didn't know.
- 12:00Speaker 2: So I was worried that he'd get trapped in the
- 12:01Speaker 2: apartment building. Whenever I would do laundry and he would
- 12:05Speaker 2: come in, I was very worried he would get in
- 12:07Speaker 2: the There's like a fenced off area where my landlord
- 12:10Speaker 2: keeps all of his stuff, and I was worried he'd
- 12:12Speaker 2: get in that area because I don't know the code
- 12:13Speaker 2: to get in there.
- 12:14Speaker 1: And then I can't even till the cat's out.
- 12:17Speaker 2: I don't want him to be trapped in the laundry room. Yeah,
- 12:22Speaker 2: but it was just it's just been a whole one
- 12:25Speaker 2: of those kind of funny Again. I'm very happy the
- 12:29Speaker 2: cat is okay, but it's been one of those funny
- 12:32Speaker 2: like things that have been stressing me out far beyond
- 12:37Speaker 2: what I think probably should have. Yeah, because I'm like,
- 12:40Speaker 2: oh my god, I needed to get in this group chat.
- 12:42Speaker 2: They think I'm horrible.
- 12:44Speaker 4: So is this girl going to keep the cat? Now?
- 12:48Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I don't know, I do so she's actually not the
- 12:53Speaker 2: one caring for the cat. Oh no, she's you know
- 12:57Speaker 2: who's caring for the cat is the guy who's always outside.
- 13:00Speaker 1: No, yes, yes, that's his buddy, as he says, and
- 13:05Speaker 1: he looks like he's taking good care of him.
- 13:07Speaker 2: This is another character in my life and my apartment listeners.
- 13:11Speaker 2: It's just a guy who's always outside, and I have
- 13:15Speaker 2: truthfully tried to avoid him, mostly because this is another
- 13:20Speaker 2: thing when you live in a small apartment, like I
- 13:22Speaker 2: don't always want to have the like sometimes I'm like,
- 13:24Speaker 2: I've got to go. We can't have a conversation right now.
- 13:28Speaker 2: But anyway, he's caring for the cat. But the woman
- 13:31Speaker 2: who took the cat in, she she was saying, I
- 13:36Speaker 2: don't think he should be an outdoor cat anymore. So
- 13:39Speaker 2: I don't know what's gonna happen from that. I'm sure
- 13:43Speaker 2: I will get more updates, but that was her point
- 13:48Speaker 2: of view. And now she's living right below me, right,
- 13:57Speaker 2: I keep saying. She it's a he I learned right
- 14:00Speaker 2: in the apartment blow me. So I just think it's interesting.
- 14:04Speaker 2: It's kind of funny these text exchanges. And then it
- 14:09Speaker 2: made me feel kind of a guilt about like, I
- 14:11Speaker 2: don't know my neighbors that well, And then I was like,
- 14:14Speaker 2: how guilty should I feel about that? Because they do
- 14:16Speaker 2: move out a lot.
- 14:19Speaker 1: And the pandemic really did change me.
- 14:21Speaker 2: To bring it full circle to quarantine universary, I have
- 14:25Speaker 2: become someone.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Who's like, oh God, please, I don't want any small
- 14:31Speaker 1: dog right now. I just need to get my mail,
- 14:34Speaker 1: all right? And I know it's terrible. I should they
- 14:38Speaker 1: sound like lovely people.
- 14:41Speaker 4: No, I think because not everyone thinks like you.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Not everyone is as kind as you, and not everyone measures.
- 14:52Speaker 3: When I lived on the West Side in a quadplex,
- 14:57Speaker 3: I made sure to get to know everybody when I
- 14:59Speaker 3: first moved in, and we had a great relationship. I
- 15:02Speaker 3: feel like every now and then we would like there
- 15:04Speaker 3: would be things that would go a little too far,
- 15:07Speaker 3: like people were a little too comfortable, but at the
- 15:09Speaker 3: same time we also they were pretty good about respecting
- 15:12Speaker 3: boundaries me too. Then I moved out and other people
- 15:16Speaker 3: moved in, and people who lived there try to keep
- 15:18Speaker 3: up that type of relationship.
- 15:21Speaker 4: They were not the same people. The expectations were odd.
- 15:24Speaker 3: The expectations was like, you could drive me four hours
- 15:26Speaker 3: away because you're nice to me. If you don't, you're
- 15:28Speaker 3: being mean to me, you're not as nice as you said,
- 15:30Speaker 3: and you're just kind of like, oh, there's a boundary here,
- 15:33Speaker 3: and not everybody knows these boundaries, and so it's really
- 15:37Speaker 3: hard to see because sometimes it's wonderful. Right now, My
- 15:39Speaker 3: neighbors are wonderful. They do ask favors now and again
- 15:42Speaker 3: happened today and it was fine, but they rarely do
- 15:46Speaker 3: and they're really grateful and they never want to step
- 15:48Speaker 3: on toes. But I could actually see like when you
- 15:51Speaker 3: start doing too much, then the expectations go higher and
- 15:55Speaker 3: you're like, no, now I'm trapped, Like how do I
- 15:57Speaker 3: tell them.
- 15:58Speaker 4: I can't do this all the time. It's a.
- 16:01Speaker 2: It is, it is, And I know, like one of
- 16:04Speaker 2: the big conversations, which I really appreciate, is you know,
- 16:07Speaker 2: right now, with everything going on, you should know your
- 16:10Speaker 2: neighbors and you should know your community and stuff like that.
- 16:13Speaker 2: So I think that's one of the reasons that really
- 16:14Speaker 2: stuck with me. But then I was like, well, I
- 16:17Speaker 2: do kind of know them. I It's just I.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Mean, you're on a text thread.
- 16:22Speaker 1: I am, that's.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Right, and there is somebody there is somebody in the
- 16:29Speaker 2: thread that did not respond at all.
- 16:32Speaker 4: So maybe they don't like the gat.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Maybe they don't live there anymore.
- 16:37Speaker 2: That's also the other thing is we have like so
- 16:39Speaker 2: many text threads of the apartment because people move out
- 16:43Speaker 2: all the time that I'm like, which one.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Is the one?
- 16:45Speaker 2: I'm not sure that's bad? Yeah, yeah, So I'm not
- 16:49Speaker 2: going to blame this random person. They might not live here.
- 16:55Speaker 2: That's when you're like, I no longer live here. Please
- 16:57Speaker 2: take me after this. Oh anyway, if listeners have any
- 17:05Speaker 2: thoughts about this, because I have been feeling some kind
- 17:08Speaker 2: of guilt about it. My friend Katie, who I mentioned,
- 17:11Speaker 2: is very close with one of her neighbors, and I
- 17:14Speaker 2: feel like I'm more mostly acquaintances with a couple of them.
- 17:20Speaker 2: And like you said, maybe that's just how we mesh
- 17:23Speaker 2: and how it works. Maybe it's nothing I need to
- 17:26Speaker 2: feel guilty about, but I do because she, I mean,
- 17:28Speaker 2: she just updated me about her neighbor today.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Am I will I can tell you about this cat?
- 17:35Speaker 1: Is what I can.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Say, kat leans you together.
- 17:38Speaker 2: The cat did bring us together. I have to say,
- 17:41Speaker 2: he has brought the whole neighborhood together. I don't want
- 17:45Speaker 2: to give away the mount but there's a lot of
- 17:48Speaker 2: money that has been raised.
- 17:50Speaker 4: For this cult and now people don't jump on and
- 17:52Speaker 4: just give them money.
- 17:55Speaker 2: And then I got like a a generic thank you
- 17:59Speaker 2: email from gofund me, but it was from the person
- 18:02Speaker 2: in my building, and I was.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Like, do you write this?
- 18:04Speaker 2: Do you know I live in the building or is
- 18:06Speaker 2: this just a generic thing that you wrote for everybody?
- 18:10Speaker 3: I always get thank you I want to do go
- 18:12Speaker 3: fund me, so that must have been specific.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Well, they definitely don't know who I am, and I
- 18:17Speaker 2: thought they would because they know my name and they
- 18:19Speaker 2: know how to spell it. Anyway, that's that's a whole
- 18:23Speaker 2: different topic of the Like it wasn't performative because I
- 18:26Speaker 2: love the cat, but like wanting people to make sure
- 18:29Speaker 2: you know they know you.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Don't right right?
- 18:32Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 18:32Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I see, I really care, I do.
- 18:37Speaker 2: I do. So that is an update on my apartment
- 18:41Speaker 2: building and my beloved neighborhood cat. Yes, yes, yes, and
- 18:46Speaker 2: I'm sure I'll have another update soon because the money
- 18:49Speaker 2: the amount has been met, so wow, yes, yes, yes, yes. Anyway, listeners,
- 18:58Speaker 2: if you have any thoughts about any of this, I
- 18:59Speaker 2: don't don't know if you connect to any of this
- 19:01Speaker 2: at all, but if you do, we would love to
