Latest / Michelle Explains Anime, Poorly / Given Ep. 9- A Winter Story
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, it's your person, Michelle. I'm recording this earlier in
- 0:04Speaker 1: the week than usual. Actually it's last week. I mean,
- 0:08Speaker 1: it's this week for me, but not for you. If
- 0:10Speaker 1: you're listening to this on Thursday or you know, any
- 0:12Speaker 1: other day, I guess. But yeah, that's what's going on.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Before I start talking about episode nine of Given, which
- 0:21Speaker 1: is what we're supposed to do today, I just wanted
- 0:23Speaker 1: to say I read the new chainsaw Man chapter last Tuesday,
- 0:28Speaker 1: not your previous Tuesday, my previous Tuesday, so like two
- 0:33Speaker 1: tuesdays ago for you, I guess, And I'm just so
- 0:38Speaker 1: confused and hurt that i didn't sleep well last night
- 0:43Speaker 1: because of it. And it's like Saturday when I'm recording this,
- 0:46Speaker 1: and it's still bothering me because I don't know what's
- 0:49Speaker 1: going to happen now, and I can't tell you anything else, obviously,
- 0:53Speaker 1: in case you're not up to date with chainsaw Man
- 0:56Speaker 1: or you don't read chains on Man, or you don't care.
- 0:59Speaker 1: But god damn it, really, I just have to remind
- 1:04Speaker 1: myself that every time I think Tasky Fujimoto is gonna
- 1:08Speaker 1: let me down big time with chainsaw Man, he doesn't.
- 1:11Speaker 1: But right now I feel like this is the time
- 1:13Speaker 1: where he's gonna go like, yeesh, it's time to let
- 1:15Speaker 1: Michelle down for real, you know. So I'm concerned and
- 1:20Speaker 1: I want to say things, but I can't. I just
- 1:23Speaker 1: I don't believe Dengi was happier before. I don't. I mean, no,
- 1:29Speaker 1: I can't talk about this. I don't want to upset
- 1:32Speaker 1: you or to you know, spoil things for you. So
- 1:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna stop, but just know that it is stressing
- 1:37Speaker 1: me out to no end. Okay, So, given episode nine,
- 1:43Speaker 1: before we start, I just want to apologize for this
- 1:46Speaker 1: episode because I'm gonna be kind of not nice about
- 1:50Speaker 1: some of what's happening here. And if you really like
- 1:54Speaker 1: this episode, you may be angry at me, and if
- 1:57Speaker 1: you are, I'm really sorry. It's a challenge because you know,
- 2:02Speaker 1: I play music and I just feel like there are
- 2:06Speaker 1: some things that are really gotten wrong about this episode
- 2:10Speaker 1: and they like bother me. So I need to tell
- 2:13Speaker 1: you about them, and I hope that it won't ruin
- 2:15Speaker 1: the experience for you if you didn't know, and if
- 2:18Speaker 1: it does, again, totally sorry. You don't have to listen anymore.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Just you know, you could cover your ears, you could
- 2:25Speaker 1: stop the podcast. You can never listen again. I totally
- 2:29Speaker 1: get it. It was nice while it lasted. But if
- 2:34Speaker 1: you're gonna stick around, we might as well just do
- 2:36Speaker 1: it and you'll see what I mean. So given, episode
- 2:40Speaker 1: nine is called a Winter Story, which isn't the name
- 2:44Speaker 1: of a song that exists in our world? Well it
- 2:47Speaker 1: does now. It's the name of a song in the episode,
- 2:52Speaker 1: the main song that's being played in the episode. Even
- 2:54Speaker 1: though they never say that that's what it's called. That's
- 2:56Speaker 1: the title of it. So that's kind of cool. Again,
- 3:00Speaker 1: So do you remember where we ended last week where oh,
- 3:03Speaker 1: you know, Yama kind of yelled at Mafou and Mafu
- 3:06Speaker 1: you got like real upset, and he happened to break
- 3:09Speaker 1: the a string on his guitar, which is the same
- 3:12Speaker 1: string he broke when he saw Yuki, I guess, hanging
- 3:14Speaker 1: definitely dead in his room. So like super traumatizing, kind
- 3:18Speaker 1: of a circle of trauma just coming back around to
- 3:22Speaker 1: him again. So that's where we start. The string is
- 3:27Speaker 1: just broke. In fact, we see it again, so let
- 3:30Speaker 1: me grab my guitar. I'm sorry, guitar. So anyway, the
- 3:35Speaker 1: string breaks again, and oh, I know, Yama's eyes widen.
- 3:40Speaker 1: We see Kaji and he looks shocked, and we get
- 3:42Speaker 1: a close up of Mafuu's eyes as they also widen.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Oh my god, a string broke and this is such
- 3:48Speaker 1: a big deal. Now that the camera has started to
- 3:50Speaker 1: rock back and forth, you know, like if someone's holding it,
- 3:52Speaker 1: you know how they do and like shows like I
- 3:55Speaker 1: don't know, like the Office or something, it's not steady.
- 3:58Speaker 1: So things are like getting real and Mafu you says
- 4:02Speaker 1: the string He's gripping his guitar neck tightly and everyone
- 4:07Speaker 1: is just standing there totally freaked out, like really freaked out.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Ouo Yama thinks, oh shit, it's all. We get a
- 4:18Speaker 1: close up on Uino Yama's eyes and we hear his
- 4:20Speaker 1: heart beat over wait, what's over Yama? We cut back
- 4:26Speaker 1: to very very stunned Kaji. What's going on? Guys? What
- 4:30Speaker 1: are you doing? And how Dooki, who for some reason
- 4:34Speaker 1: wasn't there at that moment, walks over and he's like, hey,
- 4:36Speaker 1: what happened? Oh your string broke? Do you have a replacement? Yeah,
- 4:41Speaker 1: get get him a replacement. We cut back to shocked
- 4:44Speaker 1: looking o Yama and then Howki continues, I guess you
- 4:48Speaker 1: wouldn't have one? Huh, why wouldn't he have one? Ooo? Yama,
- 4:52Speaker 1: how do ke? He puts his hand on Uo Yama's shoulder,
- 4:55Speaker 1: Oh I know. Yama looks at him, and Howki says,
- 4:58Speaker 1: run to the shop in front of the station and
- 4:59Speaker 1: gets strings. Come on, why do you guys look like
- 5:02Speaker 1: the world's ending. When a string breaks, you just have
- 5:05Speaker 1: to fix it, right we know? Yama gasps because this
- 5:09Speaker 1: is news to him, I guess And how dooke? He continues,
- 5:13Speaker 1: weren't you the one who fixed it for him when
- 5:14Speaker 1: it happened the first time? We get a quick flash
- 5:17Speaker 1: back to then, and you know in the past, Mafela,
- 5:19Speaker 1: you're saying this can be fixed. Oh I know. Yama
- 5:22Speaker 1: now grits his teeth and then we see him in
- 5:25Speaker 1: the past and he's like, of course it can. He
- 5:28Speaker 1: tightens his fists and he's like, I'll be back, and
- 5:31Speaker 1: he runs for it, like he just runs out of
- 5:34Speaker 1: the room. Yeyoi, who is you know? And the menu
- 5:36Speaker 1: looks up from her phone just as we know, Yama
- 5:39Speaker 1: passes her by, and how Dook then puts his hand
- 5:42Speaker 1: on maffu your shoulder, who was looking real real down,
- 5:46Speaker 1: and he says, I'll talk to some people downstairs. You
- 5:49Speaker 1: two go back to the green room and he walks off.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Kaji's like, right, Yiyoi walks over and she's like, Akihiko,
- 5:56Speaker 1: what's going on? Ritsu? And Kaji just cuts her off
- 5:59Speaker 1: and says, sorry, I can't talk right now. He starts
- 6:02Speaker 1: to walk away. Sorry. We can't see Ayoi's eyes, but
- 6:06Speaker 1: what we can see if her face, looks like she's
- 6:09Speaker 1: probably pretty hurt to just be dissed like that. And
- 6:13Speaker 1: she says, take care of Fritzka for me, and then
- 6:17Speaker 1: we go to the opening theme. Yay, okay, So I'm
- 6:20Speaker 1: just gonna stop there, and this is gonna be kind
- 6:22Speaker 1: of a long pause because we need to talk about
- 6:24Speaker 1: all of that, and I feel really bad about this again,
- 6:26Speaker 1: but it's important for you to understand that none of
- 6:29Speaker 1: this makes any sense at all, like not at all, guys.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I mean, this anime could get away with maybe one
- 6:38Speaker 1: character reacting this way to a broken guitar string, like
- 6:40Speaker 1: MafA you because again he's new with this, but having
- 6:44Speaker 1: like a seasoned band act like this is just totally
- 6:49Speaker 1: abnormal and not at all realistic, like at all, Like
- 6:54Speaker 1: I can't find the words to tell you how unrealistic
- 6:57Speaker 1: this is, but I'll explain it anyway, even though I
- 7:00Speaker 1: just said I couldn't. So listen. When you're playing a
- 7:04Speaker 1: show as a person who plays guitar or any stringed instrument,
- 7:08Speaker 1: strings break all the time, all the fucking time, especially
- 7:13Speaker 1: if you're like me and you don't change your strings
- 7:14Speaker 1: a lot, and they just kind of snap because they're
- 7:17Speaker 1: old and sad now. But it happens. It's part of
- 7:21Speaker 1: playing live music, it's part of playing music in general.
- 7:24Speaker 1: So first of all, any prepared musician, like really well
- 7:28Speaker 1: prepared musician, is going to have extra strings with them
- 7:31Speaker 1: because we know that this happens, and I mean mostly
- 7:35Speaker 1: it happens when you're playing guitar, not when you're freaking out,
- 7:39Speaker 1: you know, holding your guitar and then making the string
- 7:41Speaker 1: break by clutching it too tight, which probably isn't going
- 7:44Speaker 1: to happen too much, because honestly, strings have pretty good
- 7:47Speaker 1: give to them, especially like electra guitars like bend notes
- 7:50Speaker 1: a lot, so you have to put a whole lot
- 7:52Speaker 1: of pressure on a string that is in good condition
- 7:55Speaker 1: to break it. But assuming that it broke, like I
- 7:59Speaker 1: just said, you probably have extra strings with you, but
- 8:02Speaker 1: maybe you don't because like maybe you have a string
- 8:06Speaker 1: that breaks a lot, Like I think when I played
- 8:09Speaker 1: electric guitar, I don't remember what string it was. I
- 8:11Speaker 1: feel like it was the a string again, but it
- 8:14Speaker 1: used to just break all the time on me. Put
- 8:16Speaker 1: a new one on and get a couple weeks out
- 8:18Speaker 1: of it, and break again, And it turned out that
- 8:20Speaker 1: there was just like a little metal pointy piece in
- 8:25Speaker 1: like the bridge area of my guitar, like the part
- 8:27Speaker 1: where the strings end. I just kept snapping off my string.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Once that was fixed, it was fine. But I usually
- 8:34Speaker 1: broke an a string and didn't have another a string
- 8:36Speaker 1: right away because I didn't expect to need one. So
- 8:40Speaker 1: I can understand if maybe you just don't have the
- 8:42Speaker 1: string that you need, but you know, if you're prepared,
- 8:45Speaker 1: you would, so that would be the first thing you do.
- 8:48Speaker 1: The string breaks and you change it with the string
- 8:50Speaker 1: that you have. But if you don't have a string,
- 8:53Speaker 1: like I just said, the next thing you do, Like
- 8:55Speaker 1: there's an order of operations to this, is that you
- 8:58Speaker 1: ask the other person and your band who plays guitar,
- 9:01Speaker 1: because we have more than one person in this band
- 9:03Speaker 1: that plays guitar. So I would assume if Mafau doesn't
- 9:07Speaker 1: have a string, well, you know, Yama does. He's like
- 9:10Speaker 1: a quote unquote genius, Like why wouldn't he have extra
- 9:13Speaker 1: strings with him? But if he doesn't, and normally he would,
- 9:17Speaker 1: you're at a show, right, so there's a lot of
- 9:20Speaker 1: other people there who play guitar. I think there's like
- 9:22Speaker 1: five bands at the show or something, so you have
- 9:25Speaker 1: at least five guitarists that you can ask someone has
- 9:29Speaker 1: an extra a string. They just do like because not
- 9:32Speaker 1: everyone is unprepared and they're gonna give it to you
- 9:35Speaker 1: and it's not gonna be an issue. But what if
- 9:37Speaker 1: no one has an extra string? Well, honestly, at that point,
- 9:41Speaker 1: you could use someone else's guitar. Because I don't let
- 9:44Speaker 1: people borrow my guitar very very often. It's not a
- 9:47Speaker 1: big deal, but maybe no one will let you borrow
- 9:50Speaker 1: their guitar. So really, the next thing you would do
- 9:53Speaker 1: then is just play without the a string. It's gonna
- 9:55Speaker 1: sound a little weird, but it's not like Maffa is
- 9:57Speaker 1: really good at guitar, so I think it'd be fun
- 10:00Speaker 1: just play quieter whatever. It's gonna feel a little weird,
- 10:03Speaker 1: but you can get away with that. And again, most
- 10:06Speaker 1: of the time when this happens, it's happening during a set,
- 10:10Speaker 1: so it's like, does anyone have a guitar string at
- 10:12Speaker 1: this exact moment, and they don't, so maybe you just
- 10:14Speaker 1: play without the age string. It's really not a big deal.
- 10:19Speaker 1: It kind of sucks. I mean, it's always better to
- 10:22Speaker 1: have your instrument in top condition, But I don't know
- 10:28Speaker 1: how you get to the point where somebody has to
- 10:30Speaker 1: run to a music shop that might be several blocks
- 10:33Speaker 1: away and delay a bunch of shit so that you
- 10:36Speaker 1: can get a new string. Like that's unrealistic. It just
- 10:39Speaker 1: really really is. So it's hard because it feels like
- 10:43Speaker 1: this entire interaction is manufactured, and I mean it's not.
- 10:48Speaker 1: It's not realistic. I mean, I can't tell you how
- 10:50Speaker 1: many times I've played with one less guitar string because
- 10:53Speaker 1: I was like, I mean, I could change the string.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I'm on stage and i could change it, which I've
- 10:58Speaker 1: seen people do plenty of times, but I'm not super fast,
- 11:01Speaker 1: so who the fuck cares. I'm honestly like a folk musician,
- 11:05Speaker 1: who the hell cares if I have one less string?
- 11:07Speaker 1: Everyone saw it breaks, so they know what happens, like,
- 11:10Speaker 1: I'll stop talking about this. I just this really cheapens
- 11:14Speaker 1: this for me. I wish this was done differently, Like
- 11:16Speaker 1: I wish I was thinking about it like a couple
- 11:19Speaker 1: of days ago in the shower. I guess that, Like
- 11:22Speaker 1: what would have been really cool is if breaking the
- 11:24Speaker 1: string again just triggered him off with you to just
- 11:26Speaker 1: kind of lose it. Because in the last episode he
- 11:29Speaker 1: was very clear that he is holding in his emotions,
- 11:33Speaker 1: Like it's not like he doesn't have them, it's that
- 11:35Speaker 1: he's pushing them down so he doesn't have to experience them.
- 11:37Speaker 1: So I think would be cool if like this was
- 11:39Speaker 1: just the thing that just did it. Like he's been
- 11:42Speaker 1: really upset, right, He's horribly upset. He just hung out
- 11:46Speaker 1: with kid Agi and that ended up making him really sad,
- 11:49Speaker 1: and he's scared about the show. And have you ever
- 11:52Speaker 1: been in that situation where like you've got all the
- 11:54Speaker 1: shit going on, but you're like doing okay, You're like
- 11:56Speaker 1: keeping yourself together, and then that one thing happens, like
- 11:59Speaker 1: a little tiny thing and just lose it. I would
- 12:02Speaker 1: have liked the guitar string to be that. I'd like
- 12:05Speaker 1: it to have been acknowledged that it's actually not a
- 12:07Speaker 1: big deal to break a guitar string, but that considering
- 12:10Speaker 1: the context and considering everything that Mafui's been like, it
- 12:14Speaker 1: felt like a big deal to him. So I mean,
- 12:17Speaker 1: this whole interaction, everything would have been totally different if
- 12:19Speaker 1: that happened instead, and he was just like overcome with
- 12:23Speaker 1: grief and like just kind of losing it over this
- 12:26Speaker 1: guitar string, and everyone else was like, well, we'll fix it. It's
- 12:29Speaker 1: gonna be okay. But that's what I would have liked
- 12:32Speaker 1: to see. That's what would have been more realistic. Yeah,
- 12:36Speaker 1: and I know not all things have to be realistic,
- 12:40Speaker 1: but this is the same way I felt when do
- 12:42Speaker 1: you remember when we watched try Gun Stampede and Vash
- 12:46Speaker 1: was like in a fucking sewer and he was like
- 12:49Speaker 1: digging a bullet out of himself, Like you don't do that.
- 12:53Speaker 1: That's how I feel about this. None of this makes
- 12:55Speaker 1: any sense to me. So unfortunately, now you know, and
- 13:00Speaker 1: I hope that that made sense to you. At least
- 13:02Speaker 1: what I said made sense, because you know, when I talk,
- 13:05Speaker 1: I'm not really sure what I'm saying anymore. So yeay,
- 13:09Speaker 1: let's continue on and you can hate me forever. Now.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So we are outside the venue now, and we see
- 13:15Speaker 1: the lights come on over the stage and there's cheering,
- 13:18Speaker 1: and Taki's band is on stage, and Take, who is
- 13:21Speaker 1: the singer by the way, is like, this next one's
- 13:23Speaker 1: gonna be our last song. The audience is like awe,
- 13:26Speaker 1: and Taki's like awe, and they kind of laugh, and
- 13:30Speaker 1: Take says thanks guys, and he waves and then he
- 13:34Speaker 1: looks to the side and sees it on the side
- 13:36Speaker 1: of the stage. Haddoki's there and he's holding up two fingers,
- 13:40Speaker 1: and Take thinks two. Hadoki raises another finger, looking pretty stressed,
- 13:45Speaker 1: and Takei's like or three songs. Hadoki starts doing this
- 13:49Speaker 1: thing that means like lengthens spread it out with your hands,
- 13:53Speaker 1: where you like make your hands close first and then
- 13:55Speaker 1: you bring them away, and Take thinks buy some time.
- 14:00Speaker 1: He clasps his hands together like he's praying, and Take
- 14:03Speaker 1: nods and thinks, got it. He looks up at the
- 14:06Speaker 1: sound guy, who is doing something with his hands too,
- 14:09Speaker 1: But I don't know what that means. Take says, so
- 14:13Speaker 1: I said this would be our last song, but we're
- 14:15Speaker 1: actually gonna play a few more. The crowd sounds super happy.
- 14:19Speaker 1: We cut to Hidragi and she's Asuma in the audience,
- 14:22Speaker 1: and they look a little bit worried. Take continues, you
- 14:26Speaker 1: guys aren't tired of it yet, are you. Hidragi and
- 14:29Speaker 1: she's Assuma look over at each other, and then we
- 14:32Speaker 1: cut to the floor of a music shop. I guess
- 14:34Speaker 1: it's right at the entrance, and there's a man on
- 14:37Speaker 1: the floor that says welcome to Shirosawa Instruments. Ouennoyama runs
- 14:41Speaker 1: out of the store and we hear the clerk say
- 14:44Speaker 1: thank you. Then we see ouyin Oyama running through the city.
- 14:48Speaker 1: It's sunset, and he like runs smack into some business
- 14:52Speaker 1: guy and he doesn't even apologize, and the guy is like, ouch,
- 14:56Speaker 1: damn it, Yeah, you should apologize, Oweena Yama. I know
- 14:59Speaker 1: that this feels it's like an emergency for some reason,
- 15:01Speaker 1: but like you can't just run into people anyway. We
- 15:05Speaker 1: know Yama is running and panting and he thinks, am
- 15:08Speaker 1: I an idiot? Yeah? You kind of are. He thinks
- 15:12Speaker 1: about holding Maflu's cheeks and he's like, I'm the one
- 15:16Speaker 1: who told him to sing. Yeah. We see those red
- 15:19Speaker 1: lights at the train crossing and the gates starts to
- 15:22Speaker 1: go down, and we know Yama has to stop running,
- 15:24Speaker 1: and he's like trying to catch his breath, and he
- 15:26Speaker 1: thinks he's hard to understand, but he always tried so
- 15:29Speaker 1: hard to do whatever I asked him. We see a
- 15:31Speaker 1: bunch of flashbacks of Mafou and then MafA you being
- 15:34Speaker 1: like I can change the strings by myself, and then
- 15:37Speaker 1: him talking about like going to the light music club
- 15:40Speaker 1: like he's doing everything that we know. Yama asks him
- 15:42Speaker 1: to exactly like he said, and the train passes now
- 15:46Speaker 1: and the gate lifts, and we know Yama starts to
- 15:48Speaker 1: run again, hyper determined to save the day or something.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Uino Yama thinks I We cut to the green room,
- 15:58Speaker 1: I guess, which is just I guess stage for the band,
- 16:01Speaker 1: and Kadzi and Haddogi are standing together while Mafuyu sits
- 16:05Speaker 1: on a stool hugging his guitar like the world is
- 16:09Speaker 1: ending still. We hear the door open and Uo Yama
- 16:12Speaker 1: like runs up with a plastic bag. He's like, I
- 16:14Speaker 1: got 'em. K He's like, that was fast, man. It
- 16:17Speaker 1: must be great to be young. You're just a couple
- 16:19Speaker 1: of years older than him. He continues, I asked the
- 16:22Speaker 1: band before us to play another two or three songs,
- 16:24Speaker 1: so let's regroup and relax. Uino Yama, who is still panting,
- 16:28Speaker 1: says thanks, how dok look in I don't know a
- 16:32Speaker 1: little worried or piss says, just make sure you cool
- 16:35Speaker 1: up before we go on. Okay, seriously, wino Yama's like right. Hodoki,
- 16:41Speaker 1: who is holding a clipboard by the way, says, I'll
- 16:43Speaker 1: go give the PA guy the updated setlist. He starts
- 16:45Speaker 1: to walk away. Oo Yama's like okay. So at this point,
- 16:50Speaker 1: ouo Yama is just staring at Mafou, who again just
- 16:53Speaker 1: looks like he's going to the gallows. He's slumped over
- 16:55Speaker 1: in his chair, and uino Yama says, Mafoo, will you
- 16:59Speaker 1: let me change your strings? Ah? I guess. We get
- 17:03Speaker 1: to Kadoki, who is in a stairwell walking down some stairs,
- 17:06Speaker 1: and we hear Kaji say how DOOKI how dok? He's
- 17:09Speaker 1: like what but he's still walking. Kaji's behind him somewhere,
- 17:13Speaker 1: and Kaji grabs him by the arm and is like, hey, Hodoki,
- 17:16Speaker 1: how doack? He gasps and turns, and Kaji's like, look
- 17:19Speaker 1: at me, how doak? He stares at him and is like,
- 17:22Speaker 1: huh what. Kaji cuts him off. You know, I'm not
- 17:27Speaker 1: sure you even realize this, but you're always saving my ass?
- 17:31Speaker 1: How do he? He's like, uh, what you mean with
- 17:34Speaker 1: band stuff? He's kind of looking off down the stairs. Well,
- 17:37Speaker 1: I'm not Kaji cuts him off. I mean personally, how
- 17:41Speaker 1: doak He looks at him and is like, huh. Kaji says,
- 17:46Speaker 1: thanks for inviting me into the band at a time
- 17:47Speaker 1: my nerves were shot to hell. He smiles. How do
- 17:50Speaker 1: He's like, hey, can you put the damn death flag away?
- 17:54Speaker 1: Kaji's like I might actually die? Do He says, that's
- 17:58Speaker 1: really not funny right now this point, Kaji puts his
- 18:01Speaker 1: hand on the wall, like to the side of Hadoki.
- 18:05Speaker 1: I guess, like it's the sidewall, so it's not like
- 18:07Speaker 1: he's trapped him or anything. But he leans in towards
- 18:11Speaker 1: Haddoki and says, hey, ha took, you can be a
- 18:14Speaker 1: little more conceited. You know, we cut too. That's plastic bag,
- 18:18Speaker 1: a pack of strings that are apparently nicoleum wound regular
- 18:22Speaker 1: light gauge. There's also a string winder like a little
- 18:27Speaker 1: paper bag maybe and stop and this is on a counter.
- 18:31Speaker 1: We hear uino Yama say, I think the heart is
- 18:34Speaker 1: similar to these strings. We see a wirecutter snipping all
- 18:37Speaker 1: the strings off the guitar, which is weird because we
- 18:40Speaker 1: only needed to change one string. Why make this more complicated?
- 18:44Speaker 1: Ouio Yama continues, he's thinking, by the way, when the
- 18:47Speaker 1: pain's too much to bear and you can't breathe, it
- 18:50Speaker 1: hurts like strings laid across your chest that are about
- 18:52Speaker 1: to snap. He takes the strings out of their individual packages,
- 18:57Speaker 1: and he continues, it's like when you keep strumming and
- 19:00Speaker 1: picking and the strings are at their very limited and
- 19:02Speaker 1: sometimes they snap. We see him putting the strings on
- 19:06Speaker 1: the guitar. Sometimes you feel like they can ever be replaced.
- 19:10Speaker 1: But if there was someone to replace your strings for
- 19:14Speaker 1: you like this, I think your wounds might heal just
- 19:17Speaker 1: a little. He is cutting the ends off of the
- 19:21Speaker 1: strings over by the tuning pegs so they're not all messy,
- 19:25Speaker 1: and then out loud, he says, Mafu you I like
- 19:29Speaker 1: your sound. Mafu you looks up. Wuinoyama continues, I was
- 19:34Speaker 1: trying to give you a little push, but before I
- 19:36Speaker 1: realized it, you were the one pulling me. Up. He
- 19:39Speaker 1: tightens his grip on the guitar. Ever since you showed up,
- 19:42Speaker 1: he puts his hand on his face. My sounds have
- 19:45Speaker 1: been scattered, disconnected, and warped. It's just a mess. Mafo
- 19:50Speaker 1: you looks slightly surprised. Then uino Yama continues, but I'm
- 19:54Speaker 1: having so much more fun now than when I was
- 19:57Speaker 1: just playing the chords I was told to play. Uh
- 20:01Speaker 1: is that like a metaphor for homosexuality or something? He
- 20:06Speaker 1: rubs his face. Damn it, what am I trying to say?
- 20:10Speaker 1: I guess I suck at putting my feelings into words too.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Maf of you gasps. We cut to the stage lights
- 20:16Speaker 1: and hear a song ending, and the lights come on
- 20:18Speaker 1: and there's a bunch of clapping. Take who is on
- 20:21Speaker 1: stage obviously raises his very sweaty fist and it is like,
- 20:25Speaker 1: thanks guys, for those of you who came to see
- 20:27Speaker 1: our next band. Sorry to keep you guys waiting for
- 20:29Speaker 1: so long. We're leaving now, though, so don't be too mad.
- 20:32Speaker 1: People kind of laugh and clap, and the curtain comes down,
- 20:35Speaker 1: which I didn't know that the venue had. But that's cool.
- 20:39Speaker 1: We see it. Taya who to Ueki says their vocalist
- 20:42Speaker 1: is funny and his bass solo was really good too.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I agree. Oaki looks down at his phone and he's like,
- 20:48Speaker 1: ooh a Noyama's bands up. Next we see she's assuming
- 20:52Speaker 1: and he says, dou Hiraki, those guys ran pretty long.
- 20:56Speaker 1: It kutsa Yayoi, who looks pretty concerned, and then we
- 20:59Speaker 1: see Kaji and Hodge walking onto the stage and how
- 21:03Speaker 1: Dokei's like, oh, it looks like they kept the mic up, well,
- 21:06Speaker 1: they should keep the mic up. Mafo you is kneeling
- 21:10Speaker 1: down on the stage doing who knows what, I can't tell,
- 21:13Speaker 1: and he kind of looks up at the mic and
- 21:15Speaker 1: ha Dokei says, it's not really in the way, so
- 21:18Speaker 1: should we just leave it? A I get it now
- 21:20Speaker 1: because Mafu's not gonna sing. We see Uinayama and Kaji
- 21:24Speaker 1: getting ready and we hear how Doki say, you decided
- 21:27Speaker 1: not to sing right? Or are we going with the
- 21:30Speaker 1: la la la strategy? We never talked about any of this.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Was it discussed off camera like cause these are big
- 21:38Speaker 1: important things. Mafoo doesn't say anything, which is honestly a
- 21:44Speaker 1: little frustrating, and Uino Yama says, Mafou. Mafou is standing
- 21:49Speaker 1: at the mic and he looks at him, and Uina
- 21:51Speaker 1: Yama is like, hey, you're staring off into space. He
- 21:55Speaker 1: like waves his hand in front of this very dazed
- 21:58Speaker 1: looking Mafu you and it's like, we're are you looking again?
- 22:01Speaker 1: Mafu's just silent, and again, you need to communicate your feelings, dude,
- 22:06Speaker 1: I know that that's the whole thing. He can't communicate
- 22:08Speaker 1: his feelings, but he needs to physically communicate with other
- 22:10Speaker 1: people in this room. Haddo Key looks over and is like,
- 22:14Speaker 1: got it all out of your system? Muichi o ya
- 22:16Speaker 1: Yama says, yeah, when I accidentally snapped the string, I
- 22:19Speaker 1: wonder if that's just a really bad translation because he
- 22:22Speaker 1: didn't snap a string that was Mafuu, so I didn't
- 22:25Speaker 1: know what that was anyway. Haddo Kei and Kaji look
- 22:29Speaker 1: at each other and they nod and get a close
- 22:31Speaker 1: up on Mafuu's eye, and he thinks, I never know
- 22:34Speaker 1: how I'm supposed to react, but you would talk to
- 22:36Speaker 1: them at least. We get some shots of the band
- 22:39Speaker 1: getting ready, and had Ke says, I mean, there's no
- 22:42Speaker 1: point in dwelling on things we can't do right now.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Wuinoyama strums his guitar once and I think it's an
- 22:48Speaker 1: a chord, so I will do it for you. His guitar,
- 22:54Speaker 1: of course, had a bunch of I guess overdrive on it,
- 22:57Speaker 1: so it doesn't sound as you know, just like my guitar.
- 23:01Speaker 1: But whatever. Mafau looks up and they are all just
- 23:04Speaker 1: staring at him at this point, and Haddoki says, I think,
- 23:07Speaker 1: at least because we didn't see him say it, let's
- 23:10Speaker 1: just have fun. Mafau thinks, just like how everyone laughs
- 23:14Speaker 1: and cries, I just can't do it well. We see
- 23:18Speaker 1: the crowd now, and we cut to Hidaki and she's assuming,
- 23:21Speaker 1: and then also to Ugetsu. MafA You continues, I think
- 23:25Speaker 1: I'm really bad at expressing myself compared to everyone else.
- 23:28Speaker 1: But he looks over at Ueynayama, who looks back over
- 23:31Speaker 1: at him. But in reality, even if I really wanted to,
- 23:36Speaker 1: we cut to a hand pushing an up button and
- 23:39Speaker 1: the curtain begins to rise and people start to clap
- 23:42Speaker 1: and cheer. MafA You continues, I can't cry properly. It
- 23:46Speaker 1: hurts so bad, it hurts so much, I just want
- 23:49Speaker 1: to scream. Kaji starts to count down and the lights
- 23:55Speaker 1: come up on four, and then they start playing. Yeah,
- 24:00Speaker 1: they're doing it as they are playing. Mafau thinks I
- 24:03Speaker 1: always wanted someone to understand that we are seeing them play,
- 24:07Speaker 1: but not really their hands, except we can see Kaji
- 24:10Speaker 1: like hitting the drums and shits, which is nice. Mafu
- 24:12Speaker 1: You continues even just a little bit. He takes a
- 24:16Speaker 1: breath and he starts to sing fuck he did have lyrics.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Kaji and how do Key both look over at him
- 24:24Speaker 1: like shocked, and of course so does Ui. No Yama
- 24:27Speaker 1: and Kiagi and she's a Zumi are just wide eyed,
- 24:30Speaker 1: and Ugetsu also looks totally shocked, and he thinks, what
- 24:34Speaker 1: the fuck? So I'm gonna stop here. I don't really
- 24:37Speaker 1: know how to do this and make it cohesive because
- 24:39Speaker 1: obviously there's a bunch of things going on while mafu
- 24:42Speaker 1: You is singing, and he does sound really nice. He's
- 24:45Speaker 1: got a nice tone to his voice, but the lyrics
- 24:49Speaker 1: are also really cool. So I obviously can't play the
- 24:52Speaker 1: song for you because that's probably reaching you know, copyright
- 24:57Speaker 1: or something. But I guess I've decided before I actually continue,
- 25:01Speaker 1: I'll just read you the lyrics of the song, or
- 25:03Speaker 1: like a decent translation of them, so that you can
- 25:06Speaker 1: know what this song is about and you can feel
- 25:09Speaker 1: the emotions that everyone was feeling when he sang sort of.
- 25:13Speaker 1: But if for some reason you're not actually watching these episodes,
- 25:17Speaker 1: it would probably behoove you to search for winter song
- 25:22Speaker 1: or I guess it's a winter song given and actually
- 25:25Speaker 1: listen to the song so you can kind of understand
- 25:28Speaker 1: how emotional this is because it is so. First of all,
- 25:32Speaker 1: I will tell you that the song is in four
- 25:35Speaker 1: to four or something like that common time basically, so
- 25:38Speaker 1: it's gonna be the four beats probably per measure. And
- 25:41Speaker 1: the chords are pretty okay, like there's an F chord
- 25:45Speaker 1: and there's an A, there's a D minor, and there's
- 25:48Speaker 1: an A minor, and I guess a B flat and
- 25:52Speaker 1: then a B minor and then a G minor and
- 25:55Speaker 1: then an A minor and that kind of thing. I
- 25:58Speaker 1: can't do much more than that, unfortunately, but it's nice,
- 26:02Speaker 1: you know, but it is less technical than we heard
- 26:05Speaker 1: them playing kind of in the beginning of the anime,
- 26:07Speaker 1: where they were playing like a not common time signature.
- 26:10Speaker 1: So this is more stand or rock anyway, let's do
- 26:14Speaker 1: the uh, let's do the lyrics. So the lyrics are
- 26:16Speaker 1: like this, and again this is a translation. This is
- 26:19Speaker 1: not an official translation, so it's basically this. The first
- 26:23Speaker 1: verse is. I mean, I don't need to tell you
- 26:25Speaker 1: where the verse and the chorus begin or whatever. I'll
- 26:27Speaker 1: just run through everything. So it is like snow in
- 26:30Speaker 1: the shade that hasn't completely melted. I carry on with
- 26:33Speaker 1: these feelings inside me? With what word should I choose
- 26:36Speaker 1: to close the door of this love? You're everything that's
- 26:39Speaker 1: lost it's tomorrow and is now wandering eternally along with
- 26:44Speaker 1: me who was unable to say goodbye or move on
- 26:46Speaker 1: from you, just like a spell that's still unbroken, or
- 26:50Speaker 1: maybe like some kind of curse. I'm holding onto my thoughts. Hey,
- 26:54Speaker 1: what kind of tomorrow should I look for? In this town?
- 26:57Speaker 1: The cold tears that fall freeze under the sky, they're
- 27:00Speaker 1: just pretending to be kind as they fall down my face.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Two people who are always together are now torn apart.
- 27:08Speaker 1: And that's all there is to this story. Even if
- 27:10Speaker 1: your everything loses its shape one day, you're always with
- 27:14Speaker 1: me as I try to move on again, even though
- 27:17Speaker 1: I couldn't say goodbye to you. I'll carry on because
- 27:19Speaker 1: I know you'll always be with me, and that's it.
- 27:23Speaker 1: And honestly, that's so fucking sweet. I love that. So yes,
- 27:27Speaker 1: let me go back to what I was doing. Anyway,
- 27:30Speaker 1: he's singing this song, so we have all this stuff
- 27:32Speaker 1: going on while he's singing, so I will do that now. So, yeah,
- 27:36Speaker 1: they're playing the song. We have some shots of them
- 27:38Speaker 1: actually kind of almost playing, and I'm pretty sure some
- 27:41Speaker 1: of them are computer animated, but there's not a lot
- 27:43Speaker 1: of detail of what their hands are doing or anything,
- 27:46Speaker 1: which is kind of sad. But what are you gonna do? However,
- 27:49Speaker 1: MafA you singing looks pretty fucking cool. Honestly, he's really sweaty.
- 27:54Speaker 1: He just looks like he's really into it. And the
- 27:56Speaker 1: crowd is watching this like shocked. Some girl puts her
- 27:59Speaker 1: hand over her mouth, and we get a flashback of
- 28:02Speaker 1: Mafuu as a kid, like under that tree, you know,
- 28:06Speaker 1: and Yuki's like holding a plane and looking at him,
- 28:08Speaker 1: and then we go to a shot of cops in
- 28:11Speaker 1: front of like their houses like Mafuyu and Yuki's, and
- 28:15Speaker 1: someone who is too much in the foreground for us
- 28:17Speaker 1: to see very well being led out in handcuffs, and
- 28:22Speaker 1: it looks like the two kind of moms like Mafuu
- 28:25Speaker 1: and Yuki's moms are standing together. We can't see their
- 28:27Speaker 1: heads though they're kind of cut off, and it looks
- 28:30Speaker 1: like Yuki's mom is trying to comfort Mafui's mom, and
- 28:33Speaker 1: mafuy and Yuki are standing behind them. Mafou looks, I
- 28:37Speaker 1: don't know, like sort of concerns, sort of blank, and
- 28:40Speaker 1: Yuki just looks pissed. They are holding their hands and
- 28:43Speaker 1: watching him leave, and then they squeeze their hands tighter.
- 28:47Speaker 1: We fade into their holding hands but older and it's raining,
- 28:51Speaker 1: and Uki pulls Mafuyu away from these kids who are
- 28:54Speaker 1: yelling and I don't know what the deal was, and
- 28:56Speaker 1: then we see them holding hands like on a bed
- 29:00Speaker 1: uh okay and yeah, so that And then we see
- 29:05Speaker 1: that Yuki is on top of Mafou and they're kissing.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Mafuu is breathing hard and he has his hand over
- 29:12Speaker 1: his eyes and Yuki touches his palm and Mafuyu moves
- 29:16Speaker 1: his hand and Yuki touches his cheek and smiles. He
- 29:20Speaker 1: is very sweaty and he does not have his shirt on.
- 29:23Speaker 1: So yeah. Now we see Yuki's hand touching Mafo You's
- 29:28Speaker 1: shoulder and Mafua You brushing it away, and then Mafuu says,
- 29:31Speaker 1: are you willing to die for me? Then? Oh, now
- 29:37Speaker 1: I understand, Okay, let's keep going. We cut back to
- 29:41Speaker 1: now as everyone, including Pake, is just watching him in
- 29:45Speaker 1: astonishment as he just spills all of his guts onto
- 29:48Speaker 1: the stage metaphorically, we hear him think a story that
- 29:52Speaker 1: took place one winter, a story about one evening. We
- 29:56Speaker 1: see Mafo You standing now at a subway station alone
- 30:00Speaker 1: and he looks over to the side and he kind
- 30:02Speaker 1: of sees the ghost of him and Yuki together talking.
- 30:06Speaker 1: He continues, no matter where I go, you're there. We
- 30:09Speaker 1: see him walking with the current band and he continues,
- 30:13Speaker 1: You're always in my head. Oh I know. Ya'm a
- 30:16Speaker 1: who is walking ahead of him turns back and as
- 30:19Speaker 1: he turns, his face kind of morphs into Yuki's. And
- 30:23Speaker 1: then we see Yuki and Mafu You eating something outside
- 30:26Speaker 1: of a store and MafA You continues, You're everything I see.
- 30:31Speaker 1: We get a bunch of shots of them together and
- 30:32Speaker 1: Yuki smiling. No matter where I go, I can still
- 30:36Speaker 1: see you there. I can still smell your sense I
- 30:39Speaker 1: can't forgive you. We get a kind of dark place
- 30:42Speaker 1: with a shot of Yuki's profile sort of obscured but
- 30:47Speaker 1: kind of looking down like maybe it's hanging, and mafu
- 30:51Speaker 1: you looking up at him horrified. I can't forgive myself.
- 30:56Speaker 1: He is pulling the strings on his guitar, but I
- 31:01Speaker 1: I miss you, still singing now he is starting to cry,
- 31:05Speaker 1: and we see more shots of them playing, and then
- 31:08Speaker 1: Mafuyu looks over it. Oh we know, Yama, Oh we know.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Yama looks back at him and smiles like he's having
- 31:14Speaker 1: a really good time, and Mafoyou looks a little shocked,
- 31:19Speaker 1: and he really looks like he's about to cry. The
- 31:21Speaker 1: song finally ends, and the last chord is still ringing out,
- 31:26Speaker 1: and we see Mafyu breathing heavily as the house lights
- 31:30Speaker 1: come up. There's a pause where everyone is silence, including
- 31:34Speaker 1: the crowd, and then they just start cheering and clapping,
- 31:38Speaker 1: and we see Jesus Zuma in the crowd looking real shocked,
- 31:42Speaker 1: and he looks over at hid Agi and realizes that
- 31:45Speaker 1: hid Agi is kind of hunched over with his head
- 31:47Speaker 1: down and his hair and his eyes. Ogetsu leans back
- 31:51Speaker 1: against the wall and crosses his arms and thinks, ah,
- 31:54Speaker 1: I get it. He looks at Mafou, who looks pretty
- 31:59Speaker 1: surprised at all of this warm reception that he's getting,
- 32:02Speaker 1: and continues, He's another one that's been blessed with natural talents.
- 32:07Speaker 1: As the crowd quiets down, Mafoo puts his head back
- 32:10Speaker 1: down and just slowly starts to walk towards Uino Yama.
- 32:14Speaker 1: W we know. Yama puts his arm around him, and
- 32:17Speaker 1: then they just walk off stage. No, guys, how do
- 32:22Speaker 1: He's like, uh, hello ouway? He turns to the audience. Uh,
- 32:26Speaker 1: our guitarist just kind of walked off. But the song
- 32:29Speaker 1: that we just played is a new one that our
- 32:31Speaker 1: guitarist u Weo Yama composed for us. We see Uino
- 32:34Speaker 1: Yama and Mafuu walking backstage and we hear how do
- 32:38Speaker 1: he say? And the lyrics were written by Actually he
- 32:41Speaker 1: just sort of left us too, but our vocalist Mafou
- 32:45Speaker 1: came up with them. Mafou grips the front of Uyama's
- 32:49Speaker 1: shirts like his chest and his hand is shaking and
- 32:53Speaker 1: he's looking down at the floor and he says thank you.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Thank you for getting me this far. He's would have
- 33:00Speaker 1: puts his head on Uhio Yama's chest, which is real,
- 33:03Speaker 1: real sweet, and then he looks up at him and
- 33:05Speaker 1: he's like thank and ohio Yama just grabs him and
- 33:09Speaker 1: kisses him. Ooh weo Yama, that's a salt. Mafu, you
- 33:14Speaker 1: looks shocked. We haven't even had a discussion about if
- 33:17Speaker 1: you guys like each other or not. And he has
- 33:20Speaker 1: tears in his eyes, and Uyoyama puts his hand on
- 33:24Speaker 1: Mafuu's face and says, you did so good out there.
- 33:30Speaker 1: He puts his hand down and continues, I'm gonna play
- 33:33Speaker 1: another song, and he just kind of walks off. What no,
- 33:37Speaker 1: what you can't just leave after that? Mafo You just
- 33:40Speaker 1: looks down at his hands, like totally confused, and then
- 33:44Speaker 1: tears start to land on them. He's actually crying now.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Anyway we know. Yama walks back on stage and how Dooki,
- 33:51Speaker 1: who looks super stressed. It's like, oh hey, our guitarist
- 33:54Speaker 1: is back, so we'll play some older songs. Everybody cheers,
- 33:57Speaker 1: and how he says, Fujimoto son song number three please.
- 34:01Speaker 1: We cut back to Mafuu standing off stage. His hairs
- 34:03Speaker 1: in his eyes, and we hear how to Keys say
- 34:06Speaker 1: this will be an instrumental number. Mafou slowly sits down
- 34:10Speaker 1: against the bottom of the stairs as they start to play,
- 34:14Speaker 1: and he's just, you know, holding his guitar tightly, and
- 34:17Speaker 1: he thinks, I'm not lonely. I'm having fun. I love music.
- 34:23Speaker 1: We cut to the band and he continues, I'm having
- 34:26Speaker 1: fun at lunch. We see them playing basketball, and then
- 34:29Speaker 1: we see Uino Yama playing his guitar on the landing.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Mafi continues and I have someone new that I'm in
- 34:36Speaker 1: love with. Wow, if only I could talk to you again,
- 34:43Speaker 1: And then we go to the eye catch Yeah yeay.
- 34:47Speaker 1: We see that sign outside, that little a frame sign,
- 34:49Speaker 1: and Subaki is closing it and taking it down, and
- 34:53Speaker 1: there are some people who are walking out and she's like,
- 34:55Speaker 1: thanks for coming. One of the girls who just walked
- 34:57Speaker 1: out is like that was so good. Then the two
- 35:00Speaker 1: guys walk out and one of them says I love
- 35:02Speaker 1: that second band, and the other one's like, I know right.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Yeyoi is standing on the sidewalk looking worried, and after
- 35:10Speaker 1: a minute she finally starts to walk away. Yeah. We
- 35:14Speaker 1: cut to food on a table, fried navy chicken, I
- 35:18Speaker 1: don't know, nuggety things, French fries, little you know, cups
- 35:22Speaker 1: of ketchup and maybe mayonnaise, and two cups of some
- 35:26Speaker 1: sort of beverage. Then we hear like, there are bunch
- 35:29Speaker 1: of people talking, and I don't think any of them
- 35:30Speaker 1: are the main characters. So the first person says, great show, guys,
- 35:36Speaker 1: and the second person says, I think I had goosebumps
- 35:38Speaker 1: all the way down to my toes. The third person's like,
- 35:40Speaker 1: for real, The fourth person says, wasn't that song sick? Though?
- 35:45Speaker 1: The fifth guy's like, the vocalist sucked a guitar, though
- 35:48Speaker 1: I wonder if he's new at it. We're kind of
- 35:51Speaker 1: slowly panning over from this big shot of the crowd
- 35:53Speaker 1: to Kaji Hodoki and take, who are standing around like
- 35:57Speaker 1: a little table, and I think the chicken is there.
- 36:00Speaker 1: And now I'm starting to wonder if maybe dinner is
- 36:03Speaker 1: literally just dinner and not a band. But I really
- 36:06Speaker 1: don't know, because I don't know how we do things
- 36:10Speaker 1: at live houses. But that'd be kind of cool if
- 36:13Speaker 1: you get to watch a bunch of bands and then
- 36:15Speaker 1: you have dinner. I don't know, but they're definitely having
- 36:17Speaker 1: dinner anyway. Someone else says if he's a newbie, he's
- 36:21Speaker 1: gonna be huge someday, for sure. We cut into I
- 36:24Speaker 1: guess their conversation now and Kaji's like, right, how do
- 36:27Speaker 1: Ki says? Praise us more? Taki's like no, seriously though,
- 36:31Speaker 1: for real? That vocalist of yours? Where'd you find him? Kaji?
- 36:36Speaker 1: And how do he clink their cups to Takei's cup?
- 36:38Speaker 1: And they're like yay, and Taki's like okay, okay, how
- 36:42Speaker 1: many toasts you guys want to make? Seriously though, why
- 36:45Speaker 1: don't you guys set up a social media account? How
- 36:48Speaker 1: do He's like, I know? Right? We see now Mafuyu
- 36:52Speaker 1: outside kind of leaning on a fence by the canal,
- 36:55Speaker 1: and he's just looking like totally shocked. We hear he
- 37:00Speaker 1: k Doaki say hey, kind of kicks Mafuu's leg. Mafuu
- 37:04Speaker 1: looks up and says, why are you looking at me
- 37:07Speaker 1: like that? We see that Hidragi looks a combination of
- 37:11Speaker 1: angry and like he's going to cry right now. Kidagi's like,
- 37:15Speaker 1: shut up. He sits down next to Mafuu. That's quiet
- 37:19Speaker 1: for a minute. Kidagi continues, Yuki knew you liked music.
- 37:23Speaker 1: We cut to Kidagi opening a door and walking into
- 37:26Speaker 1: a room. Okay, it's not a room. It is the roof,
- 37:30Speaker 1: probably of a school, and the others are sitting down
- 37:33Speaker 1: on the ground. Mafuye he's humming that song quietly while
- 37:36Speaker 1: Yuki just stares at him, totally like engrossed in his being.
- 37:43Speaker 1: We hear Hidagi say his eyes were always glued to you,
- 37:45Speaker 1: whenever you'd start randomly humming or something. We cut back
- 37:49Speaker 1: to now, Yuki wanted to write a song for you,
- 37:52Speaker 1: but you wanted him to say, let's do it together,
- 37:55Speaker 1: didn't you. Oh? Fuck. Mafu closes his eyes and looks
- 38:02Speaker 1: kind of hurt. He says, Hidaki, how was the show?
- 38:06Speaker 1: Hidaki kind of chuckles and he's like, you suck dude.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Your fingers were barely moving. Yeah, it's hard to play
- 38:13Speaker 1: guitar and sing at the same time. We went over that.
- 38:16Speaker 1: It's quiet for a second, and Mafu you says Hidaki.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Hidaki's like, what, MafA you says, I have someone new
- 38:23Speaker 1: that I like. Hidagi looks surprised, but then he kind
- 38:27Speaker 1: of smiles and he's like, sounds good to me do
- 38:30Speaker 1: your best. Mafu's like, you should cheer me on. Hidaki says,
- 38:35Speaker 1: that's too much work. Mafu you size. We cut to
- 38:38Speaker 1: a train platform where Yama is waiting for a train, obviously,
- 38:43Speaker 1: and we hear Mafu you say, a story that took
- 38:47Speaker 1: place one summer. We're panning up now from buildings to
- 38:51Speaker 1: the sky, a story that took place one evening. And
- 38:55Speaker 1: then we go to the ending theme and that's it. No,
- 38:57Speaker 1: it's not. It's one of those trick endings. It's not
- 39:00Speaker 1: at the end of the episode. So we do the
- 39:02Speaker 1: ending yeah, yeah, yeay, and at some point and I
- 39:04Speaker 1: don't know when the ending switched from the piano version
- 39:08Speaker 1: to the full version of this song, and I didn't
- 39:10Speaker 1: catch it until right now, but whatever. Anyway, back from
- 39:13Speaker 1: the ending, we see the interior of a bus. We're
- 39:16Speaker 1: getting like a close up on a gigbag, and then
- 39:18Speaker 1: we hear someone not MafA You, humming Mafu you song.
- 39:22Speaker 1: We see a wider picture of the bus where Mafu
- 39:25Speaker 1: You and Yuki are sitting together and there's like one
- 39:27Speaker 1: or two other people. It's pretty empty anyway, Mafiyu's head
- 39:30Speaker 1: is on Yuki's shoulder and he says, what the hell
- 39:33Speaker 1: is that weird song? Yuk's like, weird song? Really, it's
- 39:38Speaker 1: what you were humming the other day. Mafiu's like was it?
- 39:41Speaker 1: Yuki says it was. Mafiu's like really, Yuki says really.
- 39:48Speaker 1: We now pan across a partly cloudy sky and then
- 39:51Speaker 1: we pan down to Yuki and Mafuu. They have scarves on,
- 39:55Speaker 1: they're not really bundled up, but it looks like it's
- 39:56Speaker 1: kind of cold out and it's a little windy, and
- 39:59Speaker 1: I think they're on the beat. Yuki is hugging himself
- 40:02Speaker 1: tightly and he's like, whoa, it's freezing. How stupid is this?
- 40:05Speaker 1: Let's go home. Mafu You's like, you're the one that
- 40:07Speaker 1: wanted to come. Yuki says it seemed like a decent
- 40:10Speaker 1: date spot to be fair. Beaches are usually colder than
- 40:14Speaker 1: everywhere else, so I get it. Mafo You says a date.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Yuki sneezes, and MafA You continues, you never even asked
- 40:23Speaker 1: me out. Yuki like rubs his nose and he's like,
- 40:26Speaker 1: well that goes for the both of us. You never
- 40:28Speaker 1: did either. Shit, do you have any tissues? Mafo You
- 40:31Speaker 1: hands him a travel pack tissues. Everyone thinks we're going out,
- 40:36Speaker 1: Yuk He's like, well, we basically are. Mafo You says,
- 40:41Speaker 1: what's the difference. Yuki's like, like, maybe a one percent difference.
- 40:47Speaker 1: I can't the ocean is killing me. Mafo You gasps
- 40:50Speaker 1: and looks out at it. Uk He's like, huh what.
- 40:54Speaker 1: MafA You says, I think this is the first time
- 40:57Speaker 1: I've been to the ocean. Fuck you just figured that out.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Yuki's like, are you fucking kidding me. Mafo You just
- 41:03Speaker 1: looks at him like I don't ever kid, and Yuki continues,
- 41:07Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I just said the ocean was gonna kill me.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Mafi's like, what do you mean. Yuki says, the Ocean's awesome,
- 41:14Speaker 1: It's the best. Mafu You's like, lying is as easy
- 41:17Speaker 1: as breathing for you. Huh. We see the sky again
- 41:20Speaker 1: and the sun is beginning to sets. Yuki is humming
- 41:23Speaker 1: the song again. We follow their footprints through the sand
- 41:26Speaker 1: as they walk along the beach. Yuki is a bit
- 41:28Speaker 1: ahead of Mafu You, and Mafu You says, hey, let's
- 41:31Speaker 1: go home already. Yuki's like, just five more minutes, MafA
- 41:35Speaker 1: You says, why Yuk He's like, I'm drilling it into
- 41:39Speaker 1: your head that I'm the first person you ever came
- 41:41Speaker 1: to the ocean with. Mafo You says, most of my
- 41:44Speaker 1: first are with you, Yuki, you still want even more
- 41:47Speaker 1: of them. Yuki stops walking and looks back at him, smiling.
- 41:50Speaker 1: You might remember when you come to the ocean again
- 41:52Speaker 1: on another day in the winter when the wind is
- 41:54Speaker 1: straw or you might remember when you randomly start humming
- 41:57Speaker 1: that weird song. Mafo. U's like, I'm not gonna forget
- 42:01Speaker 1: even if we don't spend another five minutes here. Yuki says, Nah,
- 42:05Speaker 1: you're gonna forget. Mafo you like lightly gasps. Yuki starts
- 42:10Speaker 1: to walk again, and he continues, you remember it next year,
- 42:14Speaker 1: and probably in five years from now. He stops walking,
- 42:18Speaker 1: but you probably won't think about it much in ten
- 42:19Speaker 1: I bet MafA You thinks, I'm pretty sure that I'll
- 42:23Speaker 1: always remember this day even ten years from now. Yuki
- 42:27Speaker 1: finally says, Okay, let's go home, and they start walking again.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Mafo you think, so this is a voiceover. I'm not sure,
- 42:34Speaker 1: but I'm sure I'll start to forget. Little by little,
- 42:37Speaker 1: he starts to follow Yuki. We see their footsteps start
- 42:41Speaker 1: to get washed away by the ocean, and we cut
- 42:43Speaker 1: to a sign that says henoden bus kaigan dori next
- 42:48Speaker 1: stop tanasei azumacho for Kamakota station. Mafo You continues the
- 42:54Speaker 1: name of the bus stop we got off today, the
- 42:56Speaker 1: color of the sweater I was wearing, the words that
- 42:59Speaker 1: were popular between the two of us at the time.
- 43:01Speaker 1: I'm sure I'll start forgetting those little by little. They're
- 43:04Speaker 1: still walking. Yuki says, let's have sex in the bathroom
- 43:08Speaker 1: when we get back. Oh and sex is in English,
- 43:11Speaker 1: which I think is really interesting. MafA You thinks, apparently
- 43:16Speaker 1: that's called loneliness. Then out loud, he says, yeah, let's not.
- 43:21Speaker 1: Yuki laughs, well, which is it? MafA You says let's not,
- 43:26Speaker 1: and thinks one day atop of burning blinding stage, I'll
- 43:30Speaker 1: learn that for myself. And then we go the title
- 43:33Speaker 1: card number zero nine, a winter story. Then that's it. Yeay, okay,
- 43:40Speaker 1: closing thoughts. So that's a bunch, So let's start out
- 43:43Speaker 1: with the end there. When Yuki said you want to
- 43:46Speaker 1: have sex in the bathroom, I didn't hear toy day
- 43:49Speaker 1: in there, so I think it's like a bathroom that
- 43:52Speaker 1: has like a bathroom. It not like a bathroom that
- 43:55Speaker 1: has like toilet stalls bathroom. If that means anything to you.
- 43:59Speaker 1: I also gonna look up, so I'm gonna do it
- 44:01Speaker 1: right now. So I did. I just did it write
- 44:04Speaker 1: this exact second, and it looks like the word that
- 44:06Speaker 1: they're using is sekusu, like sekkusu I guess would be
- 44:12Speaker 1: how you'd spell it in English. So it's obviously kind
- 44:17Speaker 1: of just a really common way to say sex, just
- 44:21Speaker 1: saying sex, which is interesting to me. There's other words
- 44:25Speaker 1: that you can use to say sex and Japanese too,
- 44:27Speaker 1: that are not based on English, but this one apparently
- 44:31Speaker 1: is cool or something like the cooler way to say sex,
- 44:34Speaker 1: like sex versus intercourse. I don't know why am I
- 44:38Speaker 1: doing this. I'm going to stop, but now you know.
- 44:42Speaker 1: So besides that shit, I liked this episode despite how
- 44:49Speaker 1: wrong it was about strings and what to do if
- 44:52Speaker 1: your guitar string breaks. Before show, the things that were
- 44:57Speaker 1: pretty normal, of course, is asking the band be for
- 45:00Speaker 1: you to keep playing a little bit longer if you're
- 45:02Speaker 1: not ready to play. That's pretty normal, and yeah, I'm
- 45:07Speaker 1: glad that they did a good job. I'm glad that
- 45:09Speaker 1: everything was well received, and I really liked that song
- 45:14Speaker 1: and I like that we have a little bit more
- 45:15Speaker 1: context about Yuki and Mafuu's relationship, which seemed like it
- 45:19Speaker 1: was pretty good. Of course, in their argument, when Mafuu
- 45:23Speaker 1: basically shouted like, would you die for me? Then that's yeah,
- 45:28Speaker 1: I totally understand. Now. I'm sure Mafuu feels like he
- 45:32Speaker 1: has some sort of responsibility for Yuki's death, considering it
- 45:37Speaker 1: was after that argument that Yuki killed himself. Of course,
- 45:42Speaker 1: everyone's actions are their own actions, and Mafuu didn't actually
- 45:45Speaker 1: mean he wanted him to kill himself, and I'm sure
- 45:48Speaker 1: that that's not the way Yuki took it either. But
- 45:51Speaker 1: if I said that and then my partner that doesn't
- 45:54Speaker 1: exist died and they did exist, I would probably carry
- 45:58Speaker 1: that forever and always think that it was my fault
- 46:01Speaker 1: even though it's not. But uh, I get it, And yeah,
- 46:06Speaker 1: that would fuck you up for sure, And you know,
- 46:10Speaker 1: it's very telling them off what you said that he
- 46:12Speaker 1: can't forgive Yuki and he can't forgive himself, because yes,
- 46:16Speaker 1: I mean, everybody has basically the right to just stop
- 46:19Speaker 1: their lives whenever. But you're gonna hurt people. You're gonna
- 46:21Speaker 1: hurt a lot of people if you do that. Even
- 46:23Speaker 1: if you're listening and you're like, no, nobody cares, they
- 46:25Speaker 1: totally do. I even care, And I don't know you.
- 46:29Speaker 1: So I get him not forgiving Yuki, and I get
- 46:32Speaker 1: him feeling like he played a role in it and
- 46:34Speaker 1: not forgiving himself. Yeah, I liked this. There was something
- 46:40Speaker 1: else I wanted to say about things. Oh, I wanted
- 46:44Speaker 1: to talk briefly about what's going on with Yayoi because
- 46:48Speaker 1: it's sad. She obviously has feelings for Kaji. I don't
- 46:52Speaker 1: know if Kaji knows that. Honestly, I don't think that
- 46:57Speaker 1: he's purposely leading her on. I think that he's just
- 47:01Speaker 1: a really friendly guy and she's nice and he likes
- 47:04Speaker 1: to hang out with her, and he doesn't realize how
- 47:07Speaker 1: much she's pining for him. But I think in this
- 47:10Speaker 1: episode she kind of realized that, like, she's not really
- 47:13Speaker 1: a priority, you know, Like I mean, obviously he was
- 47:17Speaker 1: more concerned about what was happening with the band than
- 47:19Speaker 1: what was happening with her, and that kind of makes sense.
- 47:21Speaker 1: I mean it doesn't exactly because it was broken string guys,
- 47:25Speaker 1: but it were at a show, but like the way
- 47:28Speaker 1: he dismissed her, it probably really really hurts. So I
- 47:32Speaker 1: feel bad, all right. And then the big thing I
- 47:35Speaker 1: wanted to talk about is the kiss between Mafuu and
- 47:39Speaker 1: Weena Yama, because eh, you like probably shouldn't kiss people
- 47:44Speaker 1: that you haven't talked about being in a relationship with
- 47:47Speaker 1: at all. Like it works out here because obviously Mafou
- 47:51Speaker 1: likes Wuo Yama and Ueno Yama likes Mafu. It's mutual
- 47:55Speaker 1: likeing of each other. But they haven't even had a
- 47:59Speaker 1: conversation yet, so there's really no way to know for
- 48:02Speaker 1: sure that mafuy Likesuo Yama in a romantic or sexual way.
- 48:09Speaker 1: He could just really like him as a friend. So
- 48:11Speaker 1: it's not a great idea to kiss someone that you
- 48:15Speaker 1: don't know if they like you. It's just not And
- 48:18Speaker 1: I had this whole thing with my mom about like
- 48:21Speaker 1: is this assault or not, and she said no, but
- 48:24Speaker 1: I think that it is. I mean, it's not. No,
- 48:27Speaker 1: that's not fair, it's not in this situation because it
- 48:30Speaker 1: ended up being consensual. But you should not kiss people
- 48:34Speaker 1: if you don't know if they like you, because it
- 48:35Speaker 1: might be a sault. And you don't always have time
- 48:38Speaker 1: to pull away from a person who's going to kiss you.
- 48:41Speaker 1: It's sometimes it's too late. So it's not like, oh,
- 48:42Speaker 1: we could have just pulled away. Maybe he couldn't. Maybe
- 48:45Speaker 1: he froze, you know, maybe he's doing the threat response thing.
- 48:49Speaker 1: I don't know, h that was a lot of stuff
- 48:52Speaker 1: I just threw at you. But yeah, also, like we've
- 48:55Speaker 1: just gotten off stage, Mafu, you was like sweaty and
- 48:59Speaker 1: out of breath and like just like on the verge
- 49:03Speaker 1: of tears because all of these emotions and he's like
- 49:06Speaker 1: thanking oui o Yama. I don't feel like that was
- 49:08Speaker 1: the right time to kiss him. And I know it
- 49:10Speaker 1: probably felt like that for Ueno Yama because he is
- 49:13Speaker 1: just so like impressed and moved by Mafuu's music that like,
- 49:18Speaker 1: I'm sure that the amount of feelings he has for
- 49:21Speaker 1: him is like really intensified. So I get it. But
- 49:25Speaker 1: you gotta be careful, dude, because not everybody wants to
- 49:28Speaker 1: be kissed, especially if you don't even know if they
- 49:32Speaker 1: like you. So again, it's all fine. It all worked out.
- 49:36Speaker 1: They both like each other, so yay, but don't do
- 49:40Speaker 1: that anyway. This felt like pretty much the climax of
- 49:44Speaker 1: the show. We have two episodes left, where I guess
- 49:46Speaker 1: we're gonna resolve other things. I don't really know because
- 49:49Speaker 1: I can't remember, but even if I didn't, I wouldn't
- 49:52Speaker 1: tell you because we're watching this together. So he'll be
- 49:56Speaker 1: interesting to see where we end the show. And if
- 49:59Speaker 1: I'm remembering correctly, the Mangaka had originally intended to end
- 50:04Speaker 1: after this show, and I totally get that because that
- 50:06Speaker 1: would have been an appropriate ending. I mean, I'm glad didn't,
- 50:09Speaker 1: but it basically resolves a lot of things right there.
- 50:13Speaker 1: So yeah, anyway, I think that's really all I have.
- 50:18Speaker 1: I liked the end scene with mafuy and Yuki. I
- 50:21Speaker 1: liked that Yuki's like, hey, you're not gonna remember this
- 50:24Speaker 1: because that really is how shit goes, and it feels
- 50:27Speaker 1: a lot more poignant when you know that he killed himself,
- 50:30Speaker 1: like Mafu, you has to really try to hold on
- 50:32Speaker 1: to that now because it's something that is a lot
- 50:35Speaker 1: more important in a world without him than it was
- 50:38Speaker 1: if they continued to keep dating and god like married
- 50:41Speaker 1: or something. So yeah, yeah, I liked it. I think
- 50:47Speaker 1: that's it. I hope that made sense. I hope you
- 50:50Speaker 1: didn't hate it. I hope you're not super mad at
- 50:53Speaker 1: me that I explained why it's not a big deal
- 50:56Speaker 1: to break a guitar string. And I hope you come
- 50:59Speaker 1: back next week. But if you don't like yet, it's
- 51:02Speaker 1: it's my fault that I exist and I did things.
- 51:05Speaker 1: So yeah, I hope the rest of your life's good
- 51:09Speaker 1: or something. I don't know, but if you come back,
- 51:11Speaker 1: or even if you don't come back, I hope you
- 51:13Speaker 1: have a really amazing or good whatever whatever you can muster.
- 51:19Speaker 1: And yeah, I will be back next week most likely.
- 51:24Speaker 1: And oh, before we go, I'm almost one hundred percent
- 51:28Speaker 1: sure I'm going to do Serial Experiments Lane next. It
- 51:32Speaker 1: does have a legal source in the US now that's
- 51:35Speaker 1: Apple TV or whatever, so I think we should do it.
- 51:39Speaker 1: It's twelve episodes and it's gonna be real upsetting and
- 51:42Speaker 1: maybe fun to analyze. So I just just throwing that
- 51:45Speaker 1: out there. But again, I will see you later. Webs
