Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, everybody.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome to Inside the Tape on Inside the Birds. I'm
- 0:13Speaker 2: Jeff Mosher, of course, with Adam Kaplan, and we are
- 0:16Speaker 2: breaking down tape. So you know what that means. We
- 0:18Speaker 2: have Greg Cosell, who is going to, I don't know
- 0:20Speaker 2: if it's breaking down the tape or sifting through the
- 0:22Speaker 2: carnage of an Eagles 24-20 loss to the Rams in
- 0:26Speaker 2: week four, their second straight loss. Not only did they
- 0:29Speaker 2: lose the game, Greg, but as you are very well aware,
- 0:33Speaker 2: they lost their right tackle before the start of the game.
- 0:36Speaker 2: They lost their wide receiver, you know, leading up for injury.
- 0:41Speaker 2: They didn't have their fourth wide receiver. And then in
- 0:43Speaker 2: the game, they lose Saquon Barkley. And I forgot to
- 0:45Speaker 2: mention they were without their top tight end in Dallas Cotter. So,
- 0:49Speaker 2: you know, there's a lot of losing in many ways
- 0:52Speaker 2: going on with the Eagles offense.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Yeah, at least they were good on third down.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Oh, cheap shot.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Sorry. Sorry. I couldn't help myself.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I get it. I get it. Do you guys know
- 1:04Speaker 2: they were trying to become the first team in NFL
- 1:06Speaker 2: history to win a game by double digits without having
- 1:10Speaker 2: a third down conversion on seven or more attempts?
- 1:13Speaker 1: You know, what's crazy is they were winning 20 to
- 1:16Speaker 1: 10 at the half. And, you know, I'm sure if
- 1:19Speaker 1: you were an Eagles fan, you were probably thinking, you know, okay,
- 1:22Speaker 1: you know, maybe it doesn't look great, but they're winning
- 1:25Speaker 1: 20 to 10. You know, and that's– that seemed okay,
- 1:30Speaker 1: didn't it, at halftime? Yeah.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Yeah. It seemed like the defense was helping. The offense
- 1:34Speaker 2: was trying to do the best it could despite not
- 1:37Speaker 2: being able to move the ball. But, Greg, you know,
- 1:38Speaker 2: as we get into it, I really– you know, watching
- 1:40Speaker 2: it up front, when we don't watch tape, we can
- 1:42Speaker 2: only go on what we see up front. And watching
- 1:45Speaker 2: the way the Rams kind of funneled their pressure schemes
- 1:47Speaker 2: and watching Markel Bell have to make his first start,
- 1:50Speaker 2: my thought like immediately as the game was over was like, man, boy,
- 1:53Speaker 2: did they take advantage of Markel Bell's inexperience. But then
- 1:55Speaker 2: watching– re-watching and having more patience.
- 1:58Speaker 1: He was fine.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I just noticed that they overloaded on his side,
- 2:02Speaker 2: but I think- Well, they did.
- 2:03Speaker 1: A couple of times, but, you know, again, and there
- 2:06Speaker 1: was one in particular where he was uncertain, which is
- 2:08Speaker 1: to be expected.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:09Speaker 1: But I think, you know, overall, he wasn't the reason
- 2:13Speaker 1: that this happened.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Look, we've now seen two weeks in a row that
- 2:18Speaker 1: we saw what Dennis Allen did. Now, he didn't necessarily
- 2:20Speaker 1: pressure at the same rate that the Rams did, but
- 2:23Speaker 1: he lined up in all those pressure fronts. we saw
- 2:26Speaker 1: the Rams just go all out essentially with pressure. I mean,
- 2:29Speaker 1: they blitzed a lot, half of Hertz, 32 dropbacks. They
- 2:33Speaker 1: rushed five or more. And it's clear that at this
- 2:39Speaker 1: moment in time and anybody watching tape, and I know
- 2:42Speaker 1: you guys talk to people. I didn't need to talk
- 2:44Speaker 1: to anybody. I saw the tape this morning. It was
- 2:46Speaker 1: the first thing I watched when I came in it.
- 2:48Speaker 1: I think I was in the office at 5 a.m.
- 2:50Speaker 1: It was the first thing I watched. So I didn't
- 2:53Speaker 1: need to talk to anybody. But it's evident that right
- 2:57Speaker 1: now the coaching staff, and as we discussed on Friday,
- 3:00Speaker 1: everybody will point to Sean Mannion. And, you know, he's
- 3:03Speaker 1: a major part of it. I don't want people to
- 3:05Speaker 1: think he's not a part of it. But right now
- 3:07Speaker 1: they do not have the tactical answers that are necessary
- 3:11Speaker 1: to deal with this. And anybody, Adam, you know, you
- 3:13Speaker 1: talk to people, you know, offensive line coaches, you know,
- 3:17Speaker 1: you talk to people, they're going to tell you the
- 3:18Speaker 1: same thing. This is not saying anything out of school.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Right now they don't have the answers for how to
- 3:23Speaker 1: deal with this.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Do you think, Greg, it's more just a personal issue
- 3:28Speaker 3: because they have so many injuries, or is it, hey,
- 3:31Speaker 3: they didn't really have injuries in the Chicago game as many,
- 3:35Speaker 3: and they were terrible in the second half. They only
- 3:37Speaker 3: had seven points in general. Is it just because the
- 3:41Speaker 3: fans are asking us, is it just an aberration, or
- 3:42Speaker 3: is it this is who they are? We don't know
- 3:44Speaker 3: who they are.
- 3:44Speaker 1: No, no. I'm not going to sit here and say
- 3:46Speaker 1: after four games this is who they are because, you know,
- 3:49Speaker 1: assuming that there's not any changes like the OC being
- 3:52Speaker 1: relieved of his duties or anything like that, you know,
- 3:55Speaker 1: and I never asked, I never speak to any of that. I,
- 3:58Speaker 1: you know, you guys don't either. No one advocates for
- 4:00Speaker 1: people to get fired. You know, the guy's only done it,
- 4:03Speaker 1: Sean Mannion for four games. And, you know, when you're
- 4:07Speaker 1: the main guy, you know, it's, it's different than when
- 4:09Speaker 1: you're just part of a group that's putting together a plan.
- 4:12Speaker 1: We know that that's different. Um, uh, and, and he's
- 4:16Speaker 1: feeling his way through, um, you know, it's a fairly
- 4:19Speaker 1: young coaching staff because I did look up the staff.
- 4:22Speaker 1: So you have a lot of younger guys who also
- 4:24Speaker 1: are probably feeling their way through to some extent. And,
- 4:28Speaker 1: you know, it's no knock on them in any job.
- 4:30Speaker 1: No one's great the second they step into the job.
- 4:33Speaker 1: It's just not human nature. You know, there's very few
- 4:35Speaker 1: people in the world like that. So to respond to
- 4:39Speaker 1: Adam's question, you know, I don't think it's personnel per se.
- 4:45Speaker 1: I think that, When you put together a pass game,
- 4:49Speaker 1: and I've had many of these conversations over the years,
- 4:51Speaker 1: as you guys know, and I'll just let the audience
- 4:53Speaker 1: know because I've talked to many, many coaches over the
- 4:56Speaker 1: years and have been fortunate to have people a lot
- 4:58Speaker 1: smarter than I am talk to me about this stuff.
- 5:01Speaker 1: The number one thing in a pass game is protection.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I remember when I first had a great conversation years
- 5:08Speaker 1: and years ago with John Gruden, and that's the first
- 5:11Speaker 1: thing he said. He said, it's protection. If you can't protect,
- 5:16Speaker 1: you don't have a pass game. You know, we can
- 5:18Speaker 1: talk about having great wide outs and all. If you
- 5:20Speaker 1: can't protect, you don't have a pass game. So now
- 5:23Speaker 1: it comes down to how do you tactically protect? And
- 5:27Speaker 1: if that means keeping a guy in or you have
- 5:29Speaker 1: to protect, you know, you can't say, oh, we have
- 5:32Speaker 1: Justin Jefferson and we have Jamar Chase and we have
- 5:34Speaker 1: this guy and we have that guy. That's all great.
- 5:37Speaker 1: But if you can't protect, that doesn't matter. So now
- 5:40Speaker 1: it's tactical. How are you going about putting together your
- 5:43Speaker 1: pass protection plan, knowing that you're going to get pressure
- 5:48Speaker 1: fronts and pressures, blitzes? You know, you've got to have
- 5:53Speaker 1: answers for that.
- 5:55Speaker 2: So that leads me back to the point I was
- 5:56Speaker 2: making at the start, is that while I'm preparing for
- 5:59Speaker 2: the show and cutting up clips and going through the plays,
- 6:01Speaker 2: like you do all the time for many games, Greg,
- 6:03Speaker 2: I noted, wow, no, Markel Bell was not an issue
- 6:06Speaker 2: at Cam Juergens, who continues to try to play left guard,
- 6:10Speaker 2: does not, to me, and I'll let you speak to this,
- 6:12Speaker 2: does not look like a player who's been able to
- 6:14Speaker 2: build upon and stack and get better. In fact, I
- 6:18Speaker 2: think in some cases he may have looked not as
- 6:21Speaker 2: good this game as at a prior game. He just
- 6:22Speaker 2: does not look comfortable at left guard.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I would agree with that. Again, I'm not an offensive
- 6:26Speaker 1: line guru, but I would agree with that. And the
- 6:28Speaker 1: other thing, and I learned this from Merrill Hodge, you know,
- 6:30Speaker 1: and very early on, backs are critical in pass protection.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Merrill used to explain to me, and he played in
- 6:38Speaker 1: the league for as long as he did because that's
- 6:40Speaker 1: who he was, who he had to be, because he
- 6:42Speaker 1: was in a draft back 100 years ago when they
- 6:45Speaker 1: had 11 or 12 rounds. He was like a 10th-round pick,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and in order to stay in the league, he had
- 6:50Speaker 1: to do every single thing correctly. And he stayed in
- 6:53Speaker 1: the league for a long time, would have stayed longer,
- 6:55Speaker 1: and unfortunately had a concussion. But he always told me
- 6:58Speaker 1: that backs have to understand fronts the same way that
- 7:02Speaker 1: quarterbacks have to understand fronts. And, you know, I thought
- 7:06Speaker 1: Shipley a couple of times was a little uncertain as to,
- 7:09Speaker 1: you know, what his responsibility was again, without knowing their calls,
- 7:14Speaker 1: but when there's an overload to your side and you're
- 7:17Speaker 1: the back, you can't step away from the overload, you know,
- 7:21Speaker 1: which he did once. I forget the play, you.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Know, we'll take a look at it.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah. So, I mean, backs have to understand, you know,
- 7:29Speaker 1: fronts the same way that quarterbacks do and that's imperative. And,
- 7:34Speaker 1: you know, So you got to teach them that. And that's,
- 7:36Speaker 1: you know, and I'm not knocking any coach. They may
- 7:39Speaker 1: be taught that, you know, the thing is another phrase
- 7:41Speaker 1: I learned from Merrill, which is so true. Coaches have
- 7:44Speaker 1: all the power, but no control. You can teach guys
- 7:47Speaker 1: exactly the right thing to do, but when they get
- 7:49Speaker 1: in the game, you know, then they got to do it.
- 7:52Speaker 1: You know, you're not holding their hand and tell it,
- 7:54Speaker 1: you know, you're in the booth or on the sideline,
- 7:56Speaker 1: they got to do it.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Right. You know, Adam, Adam, one of the biggest things
- 8:00Speaker 2: we talked about to Greg's point leading into the season
- 8:02Speaker 2: was not having Jeff Stoutland anymore. having Chris Cooper and
- 8:06Speaker 2: it's not, it's a twofold responsibility. One fold is just
- 8:09Speaker 2: getting your starting offensive line to be prepared to play
- 8:12Speaker 2: 17 games and further, right? The other is to be
- 8:15Speaker 2: able to develop talent at positions the way, I mean,
- 8:19Speaker 2: I don't know if anybody will ever do it the
- 8:20Speaker 2: way Jeff did, but just to a good enough level
- 8:22Speaker 2: so that your young kids can get in there and play.
- 8:25Speaker 2: And now he's had to have both of these things
- 8:28Speaker 2: occur at the same time by having to have Drew
- 8:31Speaker 2: Kendall get in there at center and then having to
- 8:32Speaker 2: have on Sunday a Markel Bell get in there and
- 8:35Speaker 2: right tackle. And you can see, I think Greg would
- 8:38Speaker 2: attest to just from what he see. I mean, they,
- 8:40Speaker 2: they don't look like a team, a line that's playing
- 8:42Speaker 2: in sync with harmony. I'm not blaming Chris Cooper for that.
- 8:45Speaker 2: I'm just saying that's the challenge at hand for him
- 8:48Speaker 2: doing this for the first time with the Eagles.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Yeah. And that's the challenge. And don't forget, he's a
- 8:52Speaker 1: young coach too. He only retired from in what, like
- 8:55Speaker 1: 2014 or 15. I mean, he's not a grizzled veteran
- 8:59Speaker 1: old line coach who's been doing it for 20 years. Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So again, we're not knocking the code, you know, and
- 9:05Speaker 1: I hope people don't take it that way. I don't
- 9:06Speaker 1: do that.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Okay.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Cause I know how hard they work. Cause I know
- 9:09Speaker 1: how hard I work. I mean, and, and, you know,
- 9:11Speaker 1: so it's not a knock, you know, and again, that's why,
- 9:15Speaker 1: and it's always easy for people to talk about game
- 9:18Speaker 1: plan or play calls. You guys know, I never talk
- 9:20Speaker 1: about that because I've been fortunate in my career to
- 9:23Speaker 1: sit in on meetings, you know, in, in training camps
- 9:25Speaker 1: and mini camps and, the detail and all that, there's
- 9:29Speaker 1: no way fans know anything about that. So I'm not
- 9:31Speaker 1: going to sit there and say, oh, bad play call,
- 9:33Speaker 1: you know, bad game plan. You know, you just don't
- 9:36Speaker 1: know about that stuff. So I'm not going to do that.
- 9:38Speaker 1: All I'm saying is the tape tells you that right
- 9:42Speaker 1: now they don't quite have the answers yet. Now, whether
- 9:45Speaker 1: that changes this week, and we'll talk way more about
- 9:47Speaker 1: this on Friday because Anthony Campanelli is one of the
- 9:50Speaker 1: best young defensive coordinators in the league who does a
- 9:53Speaker 1: lot of stuff. And in fact, because of what's been
- 9:56Speaker 1: going on, I'm going to do a piece in the
- 9:57Speaker 1: matchup show on his pressures. because the Eagles have shown
- 10:02Speaker 1: through the last two games that they're really struggling with that.
- 10:04Speaker 1: And they're going to have to get that cleaned up
- 10:06Speaker 1: or they're going to continue to have problems. Jeff.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And we talk about this in the summer, the lack
- 10:11Speaker 3: of a true third. We weren't sure how bad it
- 10:14Speaker 3: would be. It's, it's a problem.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Okay.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Being a third down back is not just catching the football. It's, protection.
- 10:21Speaker 3: The thing I've learned from O-line coaches is IDing pass rushers.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Who's coming? Who's dropping? Who am I picking up? Greg
- 10:27Speaker 3: kind of alluded to it with Shipley. This has been
- 10:30Speaker 3: an ongoing struggle for them. They have not had a
- 10:31Speaker 3: true third down back in a while. Since Kenny Gainwell left,
- 10:35Speaker 3: and Kenny Gainwell's terrific at it.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Yeah, Kenny Gainwell is a great football player for what
- 10:39Speaker 1: he is.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Yes, and they miss a guy like that.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. I mean, You know, I think Adam
- 10:46Speaker 2: and I are– we can talk about this even– this
- 10:49Speaker 2: is the life in some respect that the Eagles chose.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I mean, they went out and decided their offense wasn't
- 10:54Speaker 2: good enough. They needed fresher concepts. They stuck their necks
- 10:58Speaker 2: out by hiring a guy who's never been a play caller,
- 11:00Speaker 2: who's only been a coach for two years, and then
- 11:02Speaker 2: naturally you want that guy to have his staff, and
- 11:05Speaker 2: he brought in other coaches who don't have as much experience.
- 11:09Speaker 2: And I'm not saying that that's a bad thing, but
- 11:12Speaker 2: what I'm saying is growing teams should be expected.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Yeah, they don't truly have like a veteran offensive coach, right?
- 11:19Speaker 2: I guess Jamal Singleton would be considered a veteran offensive coach.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Right, but they didn't bring in– they don't have a
- 11:23Speaker 3: senior offensive assistant. They don't have a senior assistant.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Adam's been talking about that for a long time.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I'm not going to rip the Eagles about that, but
- 11:29Speaker 1: I've always thought that was a good idea. I'll give
- 11:31Speaker 1: you an example of that. This year I'm fortunate enough
- 11:33Speaker 1: to do some radio for Browns Media. So they hired
- 11:37Speaker 1: Mike Rutenberg as their D.C. Young guy, was in Atlanta,
- 11:42Speaker 1: but they brought in Dom Capers. OK, so now you
- 11:45Speaker 1: have a veteran who's been in the league for 100 years,
- 11:49Speaker 1: you know, and he can bounce everything off. You know,
- 11:52Speaker 1: that's just a good way to go, in my opinion.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I Adam said was probably, you know, as soon
- 11:57Speaker 2: as it happened, I started hiring coaches, you know, and
- 12:00Speaker 2: there was some talk about Greg Olson didn't happen. But
- 12:02Speaker 2: Adam said, yeah. You really need this kind of guy
- 12:04Speaker 2: if you're going to have that kind of a young
- 12:05Speaker 2: play caller and staff. And I completely agree with it.
- 12:08Speaker 2: And I'm not even afraid to criticize a little bit
- 12:10Speaker 2: because when you're the team and you represent yourself in public,
- 12:13Speaker 2: you say our expectation is to win. We're not in
- 12:17Speaker 2: a transition. We're not rebuilding. We haven't to win. Well,
- 12:20Speaker 2: then you have to put just like coaches have to
- 12:22Speaker 2: put players in position to win. The whole team has
- 12:24Speaker 2: to put everybody in position to win. And without that
- 12:27Speaker 2: senior voice, I do think it's hurting them at a
- 12:29Speaker 2: time like this. You're going through growing pains. That's natural,
- 12:32Speaker 2: but it sure would help to have a grandfatherly type
- 12:35Speaker 2: who's been through the worst to be able to pull
- 12:37Speaker 2: you aside.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I believe that, you know, and again, obviously young coaches
- 12:42Speaker 1: have to learn. We all understand that because everybody starts
- 12:44Speaker 1: as a young coach. I mean, I remember reading the
- 12:46Speaker 1: Nick Saban book and his first year out of college,
- 12:49Speaker 1: he stayed at Kent State and the two graduate assistants
- 12:54Speaker 1: that year were Nick Saban and Dom Capers at Kent
- 12:57Speaker 1: State back a hundred years ago. So young coaches have
- 13:01Speaker 1: to learn and we all understand that. But it'd be
- 13:04Speaker 1: nice to be able to learn. I mean, I remember
- 13:07Speaker 1: when I had the opportunity to really get to know
- 13:09Speaker 1: Bill Walsh. And for some ridiculous reason, he decided I
- 13:11Speaker 1: was a nice guy and wanted to talk to me, which,
- 13:13Speaker 1: you know, you didn't have to do. Believe me. And,
- 13:16Speaker 1: you know, you just sit there and you listen. And
- 13:17Speaker 1: that's how you learn this stuff from someone who really knows.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And as Adam knows, you know, being around the Ron
- 13:22Speaker 1: Jaworskis and all the people that came in all those
- 13:26Speaker 1: years to watch tape. Dick Vermeule would come in. There's
- 13:29Speaker 1: 50 guys that came in and I can't remember them all.
- 13:33Speaker 1: You learn something every time someone comes in.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Jeff, real quick. So the late Rod Rust, who was once.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. He was here every Monday for like five years.
- 13:43Speaker 1: An absolute legend.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Our friend Paul Gunther, who's now at UNLV, former Raiders, D.C., Bengals, D.C.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Matt Millen.
- 13:51Speaker 3: I mean, you just go for front office people, Charlie Casserly.
- 13:55Speaker 3: So it just.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Marty Mornig was here for a number of times. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 3: They all have to start somewhere, right? Like every offensive
- 14:05Speaker 3: coordinator was a rookie. Like they started the first year
- 14:08Speaker 3: that they did it. They were a rookie at it.
- 14:11Speaker 3: And no one's perfect. And the good thing, it's a
- 14:14Speaker 3: long season. But as I told you in the show
- 14:17Speaker 3: on Friday, you can't keep making excuses. The players they
- 14:23Speaker 3: have on the 53-man roster, they believe they can help them.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Guys are active on game day. Greg made the point
- 14:29Speaker 3: of it's not just on the OC, it's also on
- 14:30Speaker 3: the assistant coaches. That's great. But as a group, as
- 14:33Speaker 3: a unit of coaches, they've got to get the personnel
- 14:37Speaker 3: the right way. You can't just blame, oh, we don't
- 14:39Speaker 3: have Lane Johnson, we don't have Saquon Barkley. Every team
- 14:42Speaker 3: goes through injuries. It's what do you do with the
- 14:44Speaker 3: personnel that is up on game day? And they have
- 14:48Speaker 3: to do a better job of it.
- 14:48Speaker 1: The problem with football is there's only 17 games. It's
- 14:51Speaker 1: not like, let's say, baseball. Oh, you lose a couple
- 14:53Speaker 1: of series early in the season while you're figuring out
- 14:55Speaker 1: your team. There's only 17 games.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Right. Greg, I'll ask you two questions before we look
- 15:01Speaker 2: at film. One, this is more your opinion based on tape,
- 15:05Speaker 2: just for four weeks now. Does it seem to you
- 15:08Speaker 2: that the Eagles are a little bit, when we're under center,
- 15:11Speaker 2: we run, when we're in the shotgun, we pass, like
- 15:13Speaker 2: not enough of a blend to help give the defense
- 15:16Speaker 2: a little guesswork?
- 15:17Speaker 1: So I'd have to answer that anecdotally, Jeff, because I
- 15:20Speaker 1: haven't charted that. I would say that's probably fair. But, yeah, yeah.
- 15:26Speaker 1: There are tells. I mean, believe me, I had a
- 15:30Speaker 1: good friend of mine who's a scout just send me
- 15:33Speaker 1: something because he knows he actually sent me something this weekend.
- 15:36Speaker 1: And he said, I know you're one of the few
- 15:37Speaker 1: people that would love this. He sent me a tell.
- 15:40Speaker 1: He was an advanced scout for a team. I don't
- 15:41Speaker 1: want to say which, but he sent me a tell
- 15:45Speaker 1: of a team that they were playing this weekend. And
- 15:48Speaker 1: he did all the work because he's in advance. And
- 15:51Speaker 1: he said, I know you would love this.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Ah, it's so cool, man.
- 15:54Speaker 1: There's always tells like that, you know? Right.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Very cool.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Okay, second question real quick.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts.
- 16:02Speaker 2: For the most part of the game, I thought, man,
- 16:04Speaker 2: this is really a tough environment and condition to play well.
- 16:09Speaker 2: You know, you lose your right tackle, who's a Hall
- 16:11Speaker 2: of Famer for the game. You're already having trouble with protection.
- 16:14Speaker 2: You're down Devontae Smith. down Dallas Goddard. So I can't
- 16:18Speaker 2: look at this game and be like, Oh, he lost
- 16:21Speaker 2: it for, he played terribly. But I, I did realize
- 16:23Speaker 2: going through some, some clips and I'll ask you, I
- 16:25Speaker 2: feel like there were a couple, there were probably some
- 16:27Speaker 2: significant times where he could have made a play and
- 16:30Speaker 2: did not. Is that, does that seem fair?
- 16:32Speaker 1: Um, I thought there was one time that was blatantly
- 16:35Speaker 1: obvious and that was actually on the first series. Uh, and,
- 16:40Speaker 1: and that was when he missed, um, uh, Wide open
- 16:44Speaker 1: wicks on the first third down, third and six. It
- 16:46Speaker 1: was a trip for you.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Over the middle.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Is that the over the middle play?
- 16:48Speaker 1: I don't know if you're showing that play, Jeff. So
- 16:50Speaker 1: were you going to show that?
- 16:52Speaker 2: Guess what? Let's go to the videotape.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Okay, because I don't want to talk about it without
- 16:56Speaker 1: people seeing. There you go, Warner Wolf. Go ahead.
- 16:59Speaker 2: I believe it's the first third down, if I'm not mistaken.
- 17:01Speaker 1: It was the first third down of the game. It
- 17:03Speaker 1: was third and six.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I love the formation when it started off, but go ahead.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Go ahead and explain to everybody.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Basically what they did is it's, it's trips into the
- 17:11Speaker 1: field and they went with what we call short burst
- 17:13Speaker 1: motion and it's a trips read. Okay. And they're going
- 17:16Speaker 1: to get zone coverage. There's a high, low element to
- 17:18Speaker 1: this play. So basically you're reading off the, the defender
- 17:23Speaker 1: that's just outside the hash to the top of the screen.
- 17:26Speaker 1: He's the read for you. You know, the only way
- 17:29Speaker 1: that this would dramatically change, but you know, it's not
- 17:31Speaker 1: going to, is if somehow the safety did something that
- 17:34Speaker 1: safeties don't normally do. But other than that, you're reading the,
- 17:38Speaker 1: that defender. So if you want to just run this
- 17:41Speaker 1: Jeff a little bit, and then we can freeze it again,
- 17:42Speaker 1: you know, keep going. So stop it right here. Actually,
- 17:45Speaker 1: it was the wrong guy. It's the guy that dropped out.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I'm sorry. It's the guy that dropped out. So right
- 17:49Speaker 1: now you can see it has a high, low element
- 17:51Speaker 1: to it. So as soon as that underneath defender, it's
- 17:55Speaker 1: now the guy who's on the 35 yard line, who's
- 17:57Speaker 1: just outside the hash. I had pointed out the wrong
- 17:59Speaker 1: guy initially. Um, So as soon as you start to
- 18:02Speaker 1: see him expand laterally, you got to stick this throw.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I mean, this is a timing throw. And in fact,
- 18:10Speaker 1: that's Josiah Stewart who dropped out. So just go back
- 18:12Speaker 1: to the beginning so I can really make it clear
- 18:14Speaker 1: to the audience. So if Stewart is on the ball,
- 18:17Speaker 1: he becomes your read as soon as you take the
- 18:20Speaker 1: snap and you see him drop. So now you can
- 18:21Speaker 1: run it just so people see he's number 10. So
- 18:24Speaker 1: now as you see, because you can also see that
- 18:27Speaker 1: safety clearly retreating. So he's irrelevant. So now you're working
- 18:30Speaker 1: off Stewart, number 10. It's just a high-low, and he's
- 18:34Speaker 1: the read. And this wall should be out by now.
- 18:38Speaker 3: It should be out now.
- 18:39Speaker 2: By the way, this is a throw we've credited him
- 18:43Speaker 2: for starting to make in the first two weeks of
- 18:44Speaker 2: the season. He made a few of these layered throws
- 18:46Speaker 2: that were right there.
- 18:47Speaker 1: But just to be fair, I would say this was
- 18:49Speaker 1: the only one I thought that he blatantly missed. And
- 18:53Speaker 1: I think they showed this, you know, because I watch
- 18:55Speaker 1: Red Zone, but I think I saw this play, and
- 18:58Speaker 1: I think Brady mentioned that. I think Tom Brady mentioned that,
- 19:01Speaker 1: you know, that he had to make that throw.
- 19:04Speaker 3: And Wicks, you'll see Wicks after the play. I think
- 19:06Speaker 3: he kind of raised his hand.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:09Speaker 1: So that was, you got to make that throw. And
- 19:12Speaker 1: that should have been pitch and catch. Fair. Very fair.
- 19:16Speaker 2: And then now we get to a point where it's
- 19:18Speaker 2: not about Jalen, but the protection that we talked about.
- 19:21Speaker 2: This is the second and 14 where he's going to,
- 19:24Speaker 2: I guess what we want to talk about here is
- 19:26Speaker 2: the way that Eagles dealt with stunts.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Yeah, so this was now which play?
- 19:32Speaker 2: Second and 14, where they run a TT stun on Juergens.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Okay, so this was the TT stun, okay, in the
- 19:37Speaker 1: second quarter, where Juergens did something you simply cannot do.
- 19:42Speaker 1: And this is more mental than physical. I mean, you
- 19:45Speaker 1: just can't do this. And you'll see it momentarily. So
- 19:48Speaker 1: do you have this from the end zone by chance?
- 19:50Speaker 1: I will. Yeah. Yeah.
- 19:51Speaker 2: We'll take a look at it.
- 19:52Speaker 1: What happens is they run a TT stunt. And by
- 19:54Speaker 1: the way, we talked about the fact that the Rams
- 19:56Speaker 1: are one of the highest percentage stunt teams in the NFL.
- 19:59Speaker 1: So that's something that should have been known. And it was,
- 20:01Speaker 1: I guarantee that was coached. Okay. But you can even
- 20:04Speaker 1: see here and we'll.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Get to it for a reason.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Yeah. Juergens is, you know, you can't run after the
- 20:10Speaker 1: guy and turn your back. I mean, that is just,
- 20:13Speaker 1: you can't do that, you know, and he turns his
- 20:16Speaker 1: back and then you're done. And, you know, then, then
- 20:20Speaker 1: Hertz is forced to throw it, you know, way early and,
- 20:24Speaker 1: you know, it's an incomplete pass, but you can really
- 20:26Speaker 1: see it from here. It's a TT stunt, meaning tackle, tackle.
- 20:29Speaker 1: So it's Turner. Who's the picker or the penetrator and
- 20:32Speaker 1: it's Fisk. Who's the looper. Yeah.
- 20:34Speaker 2: I mean, a center should know this too.
- 20:35Speaker 1: And by the way, Juergen should know what the, protection is.
- 20:39Speaker 1: And as soon as Turner goes hard inside like that,
- 20:44Speaker 1: you let him be, you know, that someone's coming, you know,
- 20:47Speaker 1: he's not going hard inside for his health. You know,
- 20:50Speaker 1: that someone's coming and, and you know, you can't turn
- 20:54Speaker 1: your back to the, like that you're done. Yeah. That
- 20:57Speaker 1: was over. Yeah.
- 20:58Speaker 3: No chance.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Like you said, a guy who played center should have
- 21:01Speaker 2: known that.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Right. That was a bad mental mistake again. And, and,
- 21:06Speaker 1: I guarantee you guys that that was coached about the stunts.
- 21:09Speaker 1: So that was just poor execution by Juergens. That wasn't
- 21:13Speaker 1: a surprise that they stunned him.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Hey, football is heating up and everyone's pulling up because

- 22:59Speaker 2: how much I'm going to have to pay that I
- 23:00Speaker 2: have to replace things. the appliance. Then I got to

- 24:15Speaker 2: So that would set up the very next play, which
- 24:17Speaker 2: is third and 14. So this is the overload.
- 24:20Speaker 1: They use Kitchens and Lake quite a bit as pressure guys.
- 24:23Speaker 1: This one is an overload into the boundary. Now they
- 24:26Speaker 1: attack the right side at times, and I'm sure they
- 24:28Speaker 1: did that because of Markel Bell. But see, here's a
- 24:30Speaker 1: perfect example where Shipley takes a step outside. He has
- 24:35Speaker 1: to be aware. It's the weak side of the defense.
- 24:38Speaker 1: It's not the passing strength. So there's no tight end there.
- 24:42Speaker 1: There's nobody there but Shipley. So he has to be aware,
- 24:46Speaker 1: you know, that pressure could come. His first move should
- 24:50Speaker 1: be to either stay there or even take a step forward.
- 24:54Speaker 1: And then if no one comes, then you can release.
- 24:57Speaker 1: But he takes a step outside. And then this was
- 25:01Speaker 1: also an example where Bell just was a little uncertain
- 25:05Speaker 1: who to block.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Right.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I wonder if he could feel the presence of– because
- 25:09Speaker 2: he's supposed to block the outside guy, whoever the.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Most outside guy is, right? Yeah, his responsibility is Byron Young.
- 25:16Speaker 1: But then all of a sudden inside of him he
- 25:18Speaker 1: sees– is that Lake or Kitchens? It's Lake. No, it's Kitchens.
- 25:22Speaker 1: He sees Kitchens and he thinks, oh, that guy's closer
- 25:24Speaker 1: to the quarterback. Maybe I should step in there.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Right.
- 25:29Speaker 1: So he just gets caught for a second. But this
- 25:32Speaker 1: is where the back has to understand what a pressure
- 25:35Speaker 1: look could look like. and what could come from it.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he retreats quickly. I'm surprised he was
- 25:42Speaker 2: able to get there. But the damage is done here
- 25:44Speaker 2: because Hertz already feels it coming right down.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Well, the other thing, too, is even if he blocks,
- 25:50Speaker 1: assuming that Steen did the right thing, and I'm assuming
- 25:52Speaker 1: he did, you're still going to have an overload. Hertz
- 25:55Speaker 1: also has to be aware of this, that there will
- 25:57Speaker 1: be an unblocked player here because it's three versus two.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Right. Yeah, because that's a slide protection on the left side.
- 26:05Speaker 2: It appears to be.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 2: I mean, you can't tell now, but just the way
- 26:12Speaker 2: you see Lemon kind of running open there, if you're
- 26:15Speaker 2: able to protect him a little bit, who knows if
- 26:17Speaker 2: you're able to get that.
- 26:18Speaker 1: So, I mean, yeah, just, you know, another example, you know. Yep.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Another stunt here. This one, Hertz, I don't know how
- 26:25Speaker 2: he avoided the set. I got to give Hertz credit
- 26:28Speaker 2: for not turning the ball over.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Which play is this?
- 26:30Speaker 2: You're going to see him get ransacked by three guys
- 26:33Speaker 2: and then roll to a right and throw it out
- 26:34Speaker 2: of bounds. But it's another stunt of the middle. Third
- 26:38Speaker 2: and ten. In the final two minutes?
- 26:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay, so they rushed all five first-level defenders. This
- 26:44Speaker 1: was the long stunt with Young the looper. Both Turner
- 26:48Speaker 1: as the inside penetrator and Young got quick pressure, forcing
- 26:51Speaker 1: Hurts out of the pocket. This was a long stunt.
- 26:53Speaker 1: By long stunt, we mean that the looper goes behind
- 26:57Speaker 1: two players, not just one.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Oh, okay, like a two-gap stunt, right?
- 27:01Speaker 1: Yeah, this is the other play.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Yep.
- 27:06Speaker 1: So you want to, I guess, go to the next one. Yes,
- 27:08Speaker 1: my fault.
- 27:09Speaker 2: I had rewinded it too much a little bit.
- 27:13Speaker 1: All right, here we go. Here's where it is. Yeah.
- 27:15Speaker 1: So you can see that Young's coming from the left
- 27:18Speaker 1: side of the defense, right side of the offense. He's
- 27:20Speaker 1: going to work behind two players. But the thing is, Turner,
- 27:25Speaker 1: who's one of the pickers or penetrators– He gets in too.
- 27:29Speaker 1: So they don't handle the stunt well at all. No.
- 27:31Speaker 1: You know, another example, again, they had to be prepared
- 27:34Speaker 1: for this.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Right. So there's the double team. There's here's the loop.
- 27:39Speaker 2: The loop is actually almost becomes irrelevant because, because they let,
- 27:43Speaker 2: I guess that's.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Let's turn her in.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Yeah. Let's turn her in. And by then the looper
- 27:47Speaker 2: just winds up being the cleanup guy, except they couldn't
- 27:49Speaker 2: clean it up and hurt, but it doesn't matter. The
- 27:51Speaker 2: damage is done.
- 27:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:52Speaker 2: So this was pretty repetitive, just stunts and. and just
- 27:55Speaker 2: inside protection. They blitzed a ton too. I mean, you know,
- 27:59Speaker 2: as you saw, cause I, you know, I kept seeing
- 28:01Speaker 2: all these blitzes. So I finally looked up the numbers
- 28:04Speaker 2: and you know, all, all eight of the Hertz dropbacks
- 28:09Speaker 2: on third down, they rushed five or more.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Wow.
- 28:15Speaker 2: That's a big blitz rate right there.
- 28:17Speaker 1: You know, so I mean, they, you know, this is
- 28:20Speaker 1: what happens in the NFL. If you have an issue
- 28:22Speaker 1: that a team believes you have, They're going to do
- 28:25Speaker 1: stuff until you correct it. I mean, this is the NFL,
- 28:28Speaker 1: you know? I mean, that's the way it works. Yeah.
- 28:33Speaker 2: So a lot of teams are doing this, by the way,
- 28:35Speaker 2: against the Eagles for the first four weeks because I
- 28:37Speaker 2: believe that stunting and that looping, the way they rush
- 28:40Speaker 2: the passer, it also gives them a guy coming, like,
- 28:43Speaker 2: kind of downhill in case Hurts tries to take off
- 28:46Speaker 2: up the middle, which he usually does, and he beats
- 28:48Speaker 2: a lot of blitzes that way. That middle has been clogged.
- 28:50Speaker 2: There's always been bodies there. That's made it tough for
- 28:52Speaker 2: them to run.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Yeah, so, I mean, this is– Think about it. They've
- 28:57Speaker 1: got to work really hard on this kind of stuff.
- 28:59Speaker 3: They have three line changes. Right tackle, the one guard spot,
- 29:05Speaker 3: and center. And they took advantage of it.
- 29:07Speaker 2: They knew it.
- 29:08Speaker 3: They're advanced guys. This is their job to break down
- 29:10Speaker 3: Eagles tape. They knew it. Now, of course, they didn't
- 29:13Speaker 3: know about Lane Johnson, but Chris Shula finds out when
- 29:17Speaker 3: we all found out, and they took advantage of it.
- 29:20Speaker 1: They did a good job.
- 29:22Speaker 2: All right, let's go to the third and fourth and
- 29:24Speaker 2: goal scenarios, Greg. At the end of the game, Nick
- 29:27Speaker 2: Sirianni tries to win it here by going up, I guess, 17.
- 29:31Speaker 2: This is the first. This is third and goal at
- 29:34Speaker 2: the two, where I believe– I hate to pick on Juergens,
- 29:39Speaker 2: but I think he really– runs into Hertz at the
- 29:42Speaker 2: snap and causes, I thought it was supposed to be
- 29:44Speaker 2: a handoff, but Hertz was bobbling it.
- 29:46Speaker 1: That's what I thought it was, too, supposed to be
- 29:47Speaker 1: a handoff.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it's hard to see from this angle. We'll take
- 29:50Speaker 2: a look at it from the other angle, but it
- 29:51Speaker 2: looked like he should have, that's just confusion.
- 29:54Speaker 1: They're pulling people, so I thought it was supposed to
- 29:56Speaker 1: be a handoff.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Right.
- 29:57Speaker 1: And no one's running routes, so Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:01Speaker 2: So here we go in there.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Yeah. Hey, it looks like it's right there. Right hand
- 30:05Speaker 1: hits the ball.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:07Speaker 2: I mean, or his midsection, something, the ball gets jammed
- 30:10Speaker 2: into him. He's supposed to be the puller.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Basically, it's basically a power scheme. They've got they've got
- 30:18Speaker 1: the kick out block and the puller who's the rapper.
- 30:22Speaker 1: And I think they're running the ball here. Yeah, for sure. Yep.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Absolutely what happened.
- 30:27Speaker 1: And theoretically he might've scored because, you know, there, there,
- 30:31Speaker 1: there seemed like there was enough of a seam for
- 30:34Speaker 1: it to, you know, get through. And then this was
- 30:36Speaker 1: the fourth down play, right? Yeah.
- 30:38Speaker 2: What was the concept and idea?
- 30:39Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 30:40Speaker 1: You got to throw this ball. I mean, you know,
- 30:42Speaker 1: it's not an easy throw, but you know what, you're
- 30:44Speaker 1: in the, you're in the red zone. It's not a
- 30:45Speaker 1: lot of easy throws. They go three step drop. So
- 30:48Speaker 1: when you go three step drop timing, you're not reading
- 30:51Speaker 1: the full field and it's a three by one set.
- 30:54Speaker 1: And you got Wicks as the boundary X down below,
- 30:57Speaker 1: and he's going to run essentially a speed out on
- 30:59Speaker 1: McDuffie and a perfect throw here. And it's a touchdown,
- 31:02Speaker 1: but Jalen comes off of it. I mean, you know,
- 31:05Speaker 1: you know, this is not an easy throw. You got
- 31:07Speaker 1: to keep going all further. Stop. You got to put
- 31:10Speaker 1: it outside of him. Technically he won because McDuffie's inside
- 31:14Speaker 1: of him. So if you put it, You know, people
- 31:17Speaker 1: can see my hands. If you put it outside of them,
- 31:19Speaker 1: you know, right there, it's a touchdown. You've got to
- 31:22Speaker 1: throw this ball. That's the play call.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Yeah, timing and anticipation right here. And, I mean, it
- 31:29Speaker 2: may not be complete, but at least you give him
- 31:30Speaker 2: the only shot to get it there.
- 31:32Speaker 1: Because now you're done because it's three-step drop timing. So
- 31:35Speaker 1: now that's why Hertz breaks down because there's no real
- 31:38Speaker 1: other option now other than try to make a play.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Right.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, he would have had it done very quickly.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:48Speaker 2: I've debated that play because I can't guarantee it would
- 31:50Speaker 2: have been a completion, Greg, but you're right. He gives
- 31:53Speaker 2: it the best shot to get him there. McGuffey had
- 31:56Speaker 2: nice coverage, but he gives him the best shot if
- 31:57Speaker 2: he just... Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 32:02Speaker 2: long lines. We've all been there, but when it comes

- 32:51Speaker 2: top quality cannabis great prices and an experience made for
- 32:55Speaker 2: philly fans 21 and up throws it before.
- 32:58Speaker 1: The well that yeah but like i said that's the
- 33:00Speaker 1: play call you know right and you know you Yeah.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Because it's not like there were three options. That's a
- 33:07Speaker 1: play call.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Greg, overall, obviously they've depleted the pass target group. Had
- 33:13Speaker 3: a lot of questions about Darius Cooper, who he catches
- 33:15Speaker 3: a lot that's thrown to him. What are your thoughts
- 33:17Speaker 3: on him so far?
- 33:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I have no problem with Cooper. I
- 33:21Speaker 1: just think their pass game as a whole is a
- 33:23Speaker 1: little dysfunctional right now. So no one, you know, it's
- 33:27Speaker 1: easy to, let's say, rip Mekhi Lemon because he's not
- 33:29Speaker 1: putting up the numbers that people might expect being a
- 33:31Speaker 1: first-round pick and someone they traded up for. But right now,
- 33:34Speaker 1: their pass game is a little dysfunctional. Hurts only completed
- 33:36Speaker 1: 12 balls. Even the week before, it was not very good.
- 33:40Speaker 1: You know, it's not a pass game where you can
- 33:42Speaker 1: really get a great feel for the receiving core. Got it.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Very true.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Very true. All right.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Well, like you just said, it doesn't get much easier
- 33:50Speaker 2: in London against Jacksonville and Anthony Campanile. And what a
- 33:54Speaker 2: great job he's done with that Jags defense. So we'll
- 33:58Speaker 2: just have to see throughout the week. Do the Eagles
- 33:59Speaker 2: get healthier? Do they have more artillery to bring with them?
- 34:02Speaker 2: when they fly across the pond. That's going to do
- 34:04Speaker 2: it for this episode of Inside the Tape. On the
- 34:08Speaker 2: next one, we will do the Eagles defense. For Greg
- 34:10Speaker 2: Cosell and Adam Kaplan, I'm Jeff Mosher. You have been
- 34:13Speaker 2: watching Inside the Tape with Greg Cosell on Inside the Birds.
