- 1:38Speaker 3: on the second floor. I'm supposed Joe wonder who comes
- 1:46Speaker 3: from Kansas? But why didn't you notice the black out
- 1:50Speaker 3: in front of the Peak of Arms. Yeah, at the
- 1:52Speaker 3: city in Kansas, to the Peak of Kansas. Yeah, sure
- 1:55Speaker 3: somebody might have come from there. The owner of the builder,
- 1:58Speaker 3: why else would they give the place? And they like that? M.

- 2:09Speaker 3: figured out number eight the second floor deduction. You know,
- 2:12Speaker 3: I was just giving you an example when I proved
- 2:14Speaker 3: that somebody connected with the building probably lived in Kansas
- 2:17Speaker 3: right down there eight. Just like you said, deduction never failed. Job.

- 2:47Speaker 3: That's all right, man, we knew they'd be here. They're
- 2:49Speaker 3: patrol car officers. They were in the neighborhood. So they
- 2:51Speaker 3: answered your call. Right, all right, if we come in,
- 2:58Speaker 3: you're missus Martha done Better? Is that right?
- 3:00Speaker 6: No, not exactly. Oh, it's miss John Better. I'm still single.

- 3:08Speaker 3: happened this afternoon?
- 3:09Speaker 6: Oh no, no, I don't mind the doll. It's still
- 3:12Speaker 6: quite clear.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Alrighthere'd you go ahead?
- 3:15Speaker 6: What does that gen?
- 3:16Speaker 3: Does he go ahead about this afternoon?
- 3:18Speaker 7: Oh?
- 3:18Speaker 6: Well, fixed myself's lunch, and then I read up the dishes.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Been about one o'clock by the time, I think. M
- 3:30Speaker 6: after once, I put on my hat and I went.
- 3:32Speaker 5: Down to the library.
- 3:33Speaker 6: It's only a couple of blocks. Yeah, but go to
- 3:35Speaker 6: Cleveland Ranch. I took back my books and checked out
- 3:39Speaker 6: two fresh ones.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Alright, what happened next? When I come home? There was
- 3:44Speaker 3: what's it?
- 3:45Speaker 6: I come home and there he was? Who was that
- 3:49Speaker 6: old man?
- 3:51Speaker 3: Well? Just where was it here?
- 3:53Speaker 6: In my apartment?
- 3:53Speaker 3: No? I mean which room over there?
- 3:55Speaker 5: Bedroom?
- 3:56Speaker 3: I see?
- 3:57Speaker 6: As soon as I come in, I heard him least,
- 3:59Speaker 6: I heard some good moving around.
- 4:01Speaker 7: First I thought it was.
- 4:02Speaker 6: Missus Parker's manager. I know she sneaks into my apartment
- 4:05Speaker 6: and noses around. Well, she says she doesn't I know better? Well,
- 4:12Speaker 6: I said to myself, I got a red handed this time.
- 4:16Speaker 6: So I marched into the bedroom, all ready to give
- 4:19Speaker 6: her a piece of my mind. Well, I was never
- 4:21Speaker 6: so flabbergast of my whole life. He was standing in
- 4:25Speaker 6: front of the dresser going through the pocket book. I
- 4:27Speaker 6: see my black bag and a letter.
- 4:29Speaker 3: So when I was holding m h ma'am, how much
- 4:32Speaker 3: money was in the bank?
- 4:34Speaker 6: Well, I'm not positive, not to the penny, about three
- 4:38Speaker 6: hundred dollars and can yes, sir, you see I've been
- 4:42Speaker 6: saving dimes for the last fifteen years.
- 4:45Speaker 3: You mean that's three hundred dollars was in dimes?
- 4:47Speaker 6: Oh goodness, gracious.
- 4:48Speaker 3: No.
- 4:50Speaker 6: What I do is go through my change every night,
- 4:52Speaker 6: but all the dimes and my dime bank, and when
- 4:55Speaker 6: it's fled, I take it down to a river bank
- 4:57Speaker 6: and change the coins and the bills. A dime bank
- 5:00Speaker 6: hold twenty five dollars, I see. Will you'd be surprised
- 5:02Speaker 6: how much Christen can save? That way it mounts up.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Yes, ma'am.
- 5:06Speaker 6: You know the denominations of the bell, I guess they
- 5:10Speaker 6: was most of the hands, maybe one or two bigger ones.
- 5:15Speaker 3: What did this man do next? Was not better.
- 5:17Speaker 6: Well, he found money, must three hundred dollars, stuffed it
- 5:21Speaker 6: into his pockets, and he just strolled out of the department.
- 5:24Speaker 6: Biggest life. I was too dumbfounded to do anything about it.
- 5:28Speaker 6: I see it even cramped down the stairs, and then.
- 5:32Speaker 5: I heard the front door slay.
- 5:34Speaker 6: When I was shoot, he was out of the business,
- 5:36Speaker 6: and I managed to get my wits together in a dark,
- 5:38Speaker 6: central central starpretor. He put me in touch with police diation.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Had you ever seen this man before I was done better?
- 5:45Speaker 6: No, I'm sure I never did.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Could you tell us what he looked like?
- 5:49Speaker 6: Yeah, he's a tall man.
- 5:52Speaker 3: How tall?
- 5:54Speaker 6: Maybe as you I'd say.
- 5:55Speaker 3: What color?
- 5:56Speaker 5: Hairy dog, very dark, all right?
- 6:00Speaker 6: Dark eyes too ut inflected, like he'd uh spend a
- 6:04Speaker 6: lot of time outdoors.
- 6:05Speaker 3: How was he dressed?
- 6:06Speaker 1: Shut and pants and.
- 6:08Speaker 6: Jacket A light colored jacket, I think it was green.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Did you notice any scars?
- 6:14Speaker 6: Yes, comforting I did across his forehead. Then, little ziggaby.
- 6:21Speaker 3: How old? What you say was?
- 6:23Speaker 6: Oh? Is your thirty five made to forty?
- 6:28Speaker 3: You know if anybody else saw him, the other tenants not.
- 6:30Speaker 6: I haven't talked to you know, haven't left apartments.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Since it happened you live alone here to you?
- 6:36Speaker 6: Oh mind no, no, my sister message face where is
- 6:40Speaker 6: she this afternoon? But she went out of town for
- 6:42Speaker 6: a few days.
- 6:43Speaker 5: This is the grandson and his family.
- 6:46Speaker 6: They don't auks nod to get her. This morning. I
- 6:48Speaker 6: see Mary's her birthday. It's beatty be they gonna have
- 6:53Speaker 6: quiet celebration, that's ma'am. They're all carrying on.
- 6:57Speaker 3: You think it was such an accomplishment, my other there's
- 7:00Speaker 3: a pretty ripe old edge, ma'am.
- 7:02Speaker 6: I don't see what's ripe about it. Oh, I'm near
- 7:06Speaker 6: the seventy nine myself. Oh, I know, I don't look it.
- 7:09Speaker 6: Everybody thinks there's at least ten years between, and Bessie
- 7:15Speaker 6: is failing.
- 7:15Speaker 3: It's me. There's a couple more questions, But then the
- 7:18Speaker 3: second man chatty, what time was it when you got home.
- 7:21Speaker 1: From the library?
- 7:22Speaker 6: Two forty five? Maybe a few minutes after, No later
- 7:26Speaker 6: than three, though, let me see.
- 7:28Speaker 3: I just fell to get into the apartment. Was the
- 7:29Speaker 3: door lock?
- 7:31Speaker 6: I thought it was. Oh, it's tried to flock it
- 7:35Speaker 6: whenever I go out, but sometimes I do forget. Guess
- 7:38Speaker 6: it dead today?
- 7:40Speaker 3: You think he'd recognize the burger if you saw him again.
- 7:42Speaker 6: I'm boast assured the wood. Nothing the matter with my eyesight.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Oh that's fine, And I take you down to the
- 7:49Speaker 3: office with us and show you some pictures. Oh, just
- 7:51Speaker 3: to see if you can identify 'em.
- 7:53Speaker 6: Well, Nicol, like this, I have to change for dress first. Well,
- 7:57Speaker 6: I'm all right for walking around in the neighborhood, but
- 7:59Speaker 6: not for going down.
- 8:00Speaker 3: That's a few men. I'll say it has done better
- 8:02Speaker 3: while I think of it. Who came from Kansas, Oh,
- 8:06Speaker 3: I'll say it.
- 8:06Speaker 6: I don't understand.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Well, the name of this apartment you see, is that
- 8:10Speaker 3: the Peak of Arms. So I figured somebody connected with
- 8:12Speaker 3: it must have come from Kansas. Oh you don't know
- 8:15Speaker 3: who it was?
- 8:16Speaker 6: Then I didn't.
- 8:18Speaker 5: Think, Oh, yes, yes, I remember that.
- 8:22Speaker 6: Was old mister Henderson's diety.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Well you don't say, yes, yes, he.
- 8:26Speaker 6: Was the man who built this building. Well now that
- 8:29Speaker 6: was uh, ohn't see that was almost thirty five years ago.
- 8:34Speaker 6: Learn how term flies?
- 8:36Speaker 3: Yes, ma'am, how do you like that? Joe, This mister
- 8:39Speaker 3: Hendrickson came from Kansas.
- 8:40Speaker 6: M oh Ude, Minnesota, Minneapolis, z I reckless? Uh, But
- 8:46Speaker 6: it was his iety just the same, calling it the
- 8:48Speaker 6: Peak of Arms what kind of anautical he read in
- 8:50Speaker 6: the newspaper while the building was growing up. Man said
- 8:54Speaker 6: there was more people in southern California come from Kansas
- 8:57Speaker 6: and then the other state. So Miss Henderson figured it's
- 9:00Speaker 6: the name Topeka would affect a lot of tenants. It's
- 9:02Speaker 6: ridiculous nonsense, said so at the time, there hasn't been
- 9:05Speaker 6: a single solitary one a thirty five years, not so
- 9:11Speaker 6: from Kansas as ever lived here.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Four oh five pm, Frank and I put in a
- 9:19Speaker 3: call at the crime lab while Miss Dunbetter changed her dress.
- 9:21Speaker 3: We checked the other apartments to see if anybody else
- 9:23Speaker 3: had seen the burger. Only one tenant was in missus J. T.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Blade Apartment six, and formeds that she'd been out marketing
- 9:28Speaker 3: at the time of the crime and had just returned home.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Four sixteen pm, Lee Jones and the crew from the
- 9:33Speaker 3: crime lab arrived. They began their investigation and we drove
- 9:36Speaker 3: Missdunebetter down in the city hall. We checked the out
- 9:38Speaker 3: to be file and ran the suspects of description and
- 9:40Speaker 3: m through the Stat's office, and they came up with
- 9:42Speaker 3: seventeen possible. We pulled mugshots and showed them to Miss Dunebetter.
- 9:46Speaker 3: She was unable to make an identification. Six thirteen pm.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Lee Jones reported no useful fingerprints or other physical evidence
- 9:52Speaker 3: in the apartment. Six forty six pm. We drove Miss
- 9:56Speaker 3: Dunbetter home and we went off duty the next day.
- 9:58Speaker 3: May twentieth, eleven seventeen. I am, I'll get it burg
- 10:04Speaker 3: Gary Friday. Who's that? Oh sure, yeah, Wendy come in.
- 10:11Speaker 3: I see, Oh well, I wouldn't know what you look like.
- 10:17Speaker 3: H yeah, we'd like to right, thanks a lot. I
- 10:24Speaker 3: was Chubb Stark. Who you know? Stark the bartender over
- 10:27Speaker 3: the Yellow Camp. Oh yeah, the guy came into his
- 10:29Speaker 3: place last night. He was carrying a pretty big roll.
- 10:31Speaker 3: He threw it around, brought drinks for the house, got
- 10:33Speaker 3: kind of loaded, and did some talk about how easy
- 10:35Speaker 3: he picked up the dough. Just walked in again this morning. Hu,
- 10:38Speaker 3: I like any think to you? Chubb says, he's about
- 10:40Speaker 3: six foot, black hair, Yeah, scar on his forehead. And
- 10:50Speaker 3: I drove out to the Yellow Cat Bar and figure off.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Chubb Stark the bartender pointed out a husky man sitting
- 10:54Speaker 3: in a corner booth. He went over to talk to him.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Your hands on the table and stand up Hi, have
- 11:01Speaker 3: police officers on your feet? Okay, okay, all right, you
- 11:07Speaker 3: need to sit out something meat you guys? What's your name?
- 11:11Speaker 3: What come on? What is it? Port Long, Ralph, Portland?
- 11:14Speaker 3: Where do you live? Oh? Tone, around the corner? How

- 12:46Speaker 3: hall Probably and I took the suspect into custody for
- 12:52Speaker 3: further questioning twelve sixteen pm. We ran the name Ralph
- 12:55Speaker 3: port Long through R and I. They had nothing on him.
- 12:58Speaker 3: We put out an APB with his descriptions, stating that
- 13:00Speaker 3: he was in our custody. The bulletin requested any information
- 13:03Speaker 3: about the suspect and was marked attention Chicago PD and

- 13:45Speaker 6: I told you that this man, Scar is entirely different man.
- 13:50Speaker 3: This is wrong too, all right.
- 13:52Speaker 6: The other man had some gray in it, right because.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Here well, as you said, he was fairly young.
- 13:57Speaker 5: But he doesn't have to build to get gray and grave.
- 14:00Speaker 6: Since I had my appendix out, I was only thirty four.
