Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Domer and Sons, a family podcast on Notre Dame football.
- 0:03I'm Matthew Rose, the Domer, and I'm joined by my two sons and co-hosts, William Rose.
- 0:08Hey, William.
- 0:10Hi, Dad.
- 0:11And Calvin Rose.
- 0:13Hey, Cal.
- 0:14Hi, Dad.
- 0:15Today is Sunday, October 4th, and this is episode six, our UNC recap and Stanford preview.
- 0:22We'll be joined later on in the pod by Uncle Rob and Aunt Gabrielle, who will talk Stanford and give us their game prediction.
- 0:29Before we go and get into UNC, let's do a quick college football rundown from yesterday, Cal.
- 0:38Yeah.
- 0:39A few good notes.
- 0:41Penn State, they lost.
- 0:44That's not good.
- 0:45I mean, I could care less.
- 0:47It's Penn State.
- 0:48They kinda deserve it.
- 0:50They lost.
- 0:50They got their butts kicked by Northwestern.
- 0:53I don't think we were really expecting it to be that bad.
- 0:56Michigan, they lost again.
- 0:58First time since 1997, but, maybe if they had a couple more seconds added on, they could've, squeezed by a win, but they couldn't.
- 1:06Who'd they lose to?
- 1:08Minnesota.
- 1:08Minnesota, yeah.
- 1:09Yep,'cause they're, they're so good.
- 1:11Yeah, a little bit of karma.
- 1:13Karma coming back pretty strong for the Wolverines.
- 1:17Yep.
- 1:17Love to see it.
- 1:18Minnesota's head coach is pretty awesome.
- 1:21Yeah, he's kind of performative.
- 1:23Well- That's my take.
- 1:25I take Marcus seven days out of the week and twice on Sunday.
- 1:30Yeah, and then Mississippi State lost.
- 1:32I don't know.
- 1:33Kamario Taylor- They didn't just lose.
- 1:35They got their, their butt kicked.
- 1:37Correct.
- 1:38Florida- Also got their butt kicked they, number eight, got the tar beaten out of them.
- 1:44BYU barely won.
- 1:45I wanna talk about the Florida game.
- 1:47I think this really shows how deep the SEC is.
- 1:51You, you're trying to troll me.
- 1:55So my take on the SEC, for anybody who cares, is the SEC has several good teams.
- 2:02Not great teams, good teams.
- 2:05To be a national championship caliber team, you need a great quarterback, and you need a great defense.
- 2:13SEC only has maybe one or two of those teams that meet that criteria.
- 2:17Name them.
- 2:18Georgia and- Georgia, 100% Georgia I think Texas might be the second one.
- 2:22Texas is the second one.
- 2:24I'm- Texas has a good quarterback you're saying that, that Trinidad Chambless and Ky- Kywin Lacy?
- 2:30No.
- 2:31What about their defense?
- 2:32Their defense.
- 2:33Exactly.
- 2:34Defense is the most important part of the game.
- 2:36They gave up 200 plus yards, 300 yards to, on the ground to Florida.
- 2:41How many yards did they give on the ground to Florida?
- 2:43Everyone has their off days.
- 2:44This was more than an off day.
- 2:46This was 52 points scored on them after they just, they beat LSU.
- 2:50Okay Keep on going Yeah, and then big thing, USC barely won.
- 2:56Sad.
- 2:57And, Boston College, it seems every single time they play a ranked team they cast a spell on them and they don't do well.
- 3:04The ranked team does, but SMU won.
- 3:06That's good for us.
- 3:07And then Kentucky with Kenny Minchie won in overtime.
- 3:10We love to see that.
- 3:11But that's the recap for today.
- 3:15Yeah, so not that much movement.
- 3:16Uh, polls came out earlier this afternoon.
- 3:20We're still ranked three in both of them.
- 3:22I would have actually have preferred if we had moved- Went down a little.
- 3:25Yeah.
- 3:26That wouldn't be bad down, as a consequence for our play.
- 3:29So let's get into the North Carolina-Notre Dame game from yesterday.
- 3:33Cal, let's walk through the offense please.
- 3:35Yeah.
- 3:36First drive, what I love to see in the first drive is that- Two things is that we got our first play was a run for six against this good D-line, not a great D-line.
- 3:47Speaking of their D-line, Anthony Knapp completely shut down Xavier Lewis.
- 3:51Yeah.
- 3:51I think there's one play, I just don't remember, but he like pancaked him and then he like sat on him- just for kicks and that was just- oh, it was fun to see.
- 4:01Faizon had a great game.
- 4:03I think you could kinda tell after the first drive he was gonna have a great game.
- 4:07C.J.
- 4:07carr played great.
- 4:08Our running game was amazing.
- 4:11Jonas Walton performed excellent, excellent.
- 4:14Like, Jadarian Price, Kyren Williams, but man, he's a unit.
- 4:20Yep.
- 4:20He's a unit, but he's also fast.
- 4:22Like I said, Jadarian Price vibes from him.
- 4:24Mikey Gilbert, he didn't have the excellent game that we might think might happen.
- 4:31And Jayden Greathouse, first touchdown of the year.
- 4:34I think it's his first touchdown since the Ohio State game in the national championship.
- 4:39I think that's right.
- 4:40It's kinda crazy.
- 4:40Yeah.
- 4:41Yeah.
- 4:41Nice To see him get on the board.
- 4:43Definitely.
- 4:44Yeah, but our rush- our rushing looked great.
- 4:46I mean, yeah, I don't really have complaints.
- 4:49Jonas Walton averaged 5.2 yards a carry.
- 4:52Yeah, 240 on the yards rushing, 5.4 on average on 45 attempts.
- 4:57So clearly, especially in the second half when the rain started coming, we switched our play call mix to run heavy, which was great'cause a variety of things.
- 5:08It chewed up clock as well as, gave,, Jonas an opportunity- Definitely to showcase himself.
- 5:13Yeah, and it just shows like I feel so much better about our running game now because we were talking about their D-line, like it's something that is just gonna be hard to run against, but we ran really well, and I was very impressed.
- 5:28I don't have much complaints.
- 5:30C.J.
- 5:30Carr played great.
- 5:31Yeah.
- 5:32faizon, amazing.
- 5:32Awesome.
- 5:33Awesome.
- 5:34All right.
- 5:34William, let's walk through some defense.
- 5:39What did you think about our defensive performance?
- 5:42Think this is a tough game definitely for the defense.
- 5:46Our worst performance yet, but I also think this is the most high-powered offense we've played yet I don't agree with that take I don't agree with that either Who, who has a better offense?
- 5:55I think Wisconsin and- Dude, oh my God Purdue are a better offense than- Purdue has a better offense?
- 6:01Yes.
- 6:01Yes.
- 6:03Statistically they do.
- 6:04Oh my God.
- 6:04All right, agree to disagree.
- 6:06I think this is the highest powered offense with, um, Will Ship.
- 6:10When's the last time a receiver had 100 yards on us?
- 6:14It's been a while.
- 6:14I'm not saying that we played I, I That's what I want to hear about your defense.
- 6:18I think the defense was- I think the- really poor yesterday I think it was, I think it was poor but I also think it was the Uh, there's a, a tiny exception because it's a pretty So it's a decent offense.
- 6:30It's the best offense we've played in my opinion.
- 6:32Okay?
- 6:33I think Luke Talich played great even with one hand.
- 6:37He looked great out there.
- 6:38Our pass rush.
- 6:39We were getting pressures.
- 6:40We weren't really sacking the quarterback.
- 6:42Brew with our only, sack of the game.
- 6:44Bubacar got home on the KVA pick.
- 6:47He kinda knocked the quarterback and made him make that throw.
- 6:50Bryce Young, kind of a ghost game from him.
- 6:53Definitely, a Step down from the last game.
- 6:56And our linebackers did not look very impressive.
- 6:59Drayk Bowen had a bit of a stinker.
- 7:01Osberry and Sneed weren't present.
- 7:05Um, Shuler also had a bad game.
- 7:07Tryory Letter.
- 7:09I said Shuler had a bad game.
- 7:11Yeah, no.
- 7:12No, we're agreeing with you.
- 7:13We're agreeing with you.
- 7:13We're just looking up the- I'm looking it up offensive rankings of the year- I'm looking it up and Purdue's 44 and North Carolina's 77.
- 7:20So it's a 33 team difference so I guess that- Wait, where are we?
- 7:23Yeah, North Carolina.
- 7:24Where are we?
- 7:25We're fifth.
- 7:26We're fifth.
- 7:27We're fifth.
- 7:27Yeah.
- 7:28We're looking at the FEI- USC's- offensive rankings USC's one?
- 7:32That's- So, so you're saying So hold on.
- 7:36No, no, no.
- 7:36There's a dou- a bit of a double standard here, right?
- 7:39What's the- Yeah what's the double standard?
- 7:41What do you think?
- 7:42Tell me.
- 7:43Einstein, Einstein, what do you think?
- 7:45Tell me.
- 7:46The schedule determines the rankings on this.
- 7:50This is normalized- Yes based on your opponent.
- 7:53Yeah it is normal.
- 7:56I- USC does not have the best offense in the country, We don't like USC.
- 8:00We're not saying anything about USC.
- 8:02Yes you are.
- 8:03You're saying that, it doesn't It disproves USC, but it doesn't disprove the Purdue and North Carolina.
- 8:08The- It's a 33 team- That's the double standard, Einstein I Look- Um- this is what the computer says What does, what does Wisconsin say?
- 8:15'Cause y'all were saying Wisconsin had better offense.
- 8:17I think that Wisconsin was better.
- 8:18Also, two quarterbacks played in the Purdue game.
- 8:2067th.
- 8:23So there It's like this, there's two teams.
- 8:26Oh, there was also week one.
- 8:27So- No this is from- Still this is from before Saturday.
- 8:32This is with, four data points.
- 8:35Okay?
- 8:36All right.
- 8:36Get back to the defense.
- 8:37Shuler did not have a good game.
- 8:39Traore led our team in tackles which is never a good look at all.
- 8:44Um, yeah, KVA, Talich had They both had a picks.
- 8:49Leonard Moore I think played really well.
- 8:51He had a couple pass deflections and breakups.
- 8:53McKenney didn't get any, a lot of snaps which was a bit concerning.
- 8:56We saw Sanders on the field a lot and he didn't look impressive.
- 9:00Yeah.
- 9:00W- so why do you think, we gave up the most yards we have given up all season long?
- 9:06Our pass defense was really poor.
- 9:10Yeah, their tight end- And I know it's only 208 yards total offense on passing still it's like that shouldn't be the standard.
- 9:17If you look at our secondary, a team like North Carolina should not be getting, 208 passing yards How many first downs did they have?
- 9:25Especially with Billy Edwards as the quarterback.
- 9:27Yeah, Billy Edwards.
- 9:28I mean you can give them some grace as in Bobby Petrino's their offensive coordinator.
- 9:35Like that's a good offensive coordinator but I think their tight end just killed us and- Yeah, our safeties, Shuler didn't look impressive.
- 9:46Talich did.
- 9:48Talich's interception, the exact same as Michigan State's.
- 9:52I read something that said, uh, C.J.
- 9:55Carr knows exactly what it feels like to be that Michigan State QB because it happens to him almost every single practice.
- 10:02He gets, that same kind of pick off.
- 10:05He gets picked off by Luke Talich exactly like that.
- 10:07Yeah, look, you know, for me, guys, it was...
- 10:12We had the ball, I believe, first and 10, or first and goal from around the 10, with about 12 minutes left in the first half.
- 10:22We're up 21-7.
- 10:24We get it down to the two-yard line two downs, we don't punch it in.
- 10:30So we turn over the ball.
- 10:31It could have been 28 to seven.
- 10:33If it's 28 to seven, I think this game just turns into an absolute bloodbath.
- 10:39I think Carolina is probably considering firing Bill Belichick today.
- 10:45But instead, what happens is we turn the ball over.
- 10:49Fine, let's get the defense on the field, who up to that point was playing decently, and we give up a 98-yard drive, which this defense should not allow against this level of opponent.
- 11:02So- I think on the drive, I'd actually blame Chris Ash.
- 11:05I think that when we were on the goal line, we aren't, we weren't playing tight enough man coverage.
- 11:10I think with our secondary, we should r- be running press man every single time when it's within the 10-yard line.
- 11:17I, I'm not disagreeing with you.
- 11:19William made a comment earlier today about how we just played way too much zone and we didn't blitz enough.
- 11:24Yeah.
- 11:25I think that we were sending four, weren't getting any sacks, and Chris Ash didn't recognize that, and they were throwing it to their tight end over the middle every time.
- 11:35I think if we bring the pressure and force him to get hit, good things happen, like on the KVA pick.
- 11:41I think it's more the coordinators' poor performance than the players, in my opinion.
- 11:47Well, coordinators put the players in the position, yes.
- 11:51But I, I- It's a little bit of both.
- 11:53It was a little bit of both.
- 11:54Shuler was uncharacteristically sloppy yesterday, and he is a bellwether for this team.
- 12:00Drayk Bowen, I, I mean, he was off.
- 12:04He was average.
- 12:05I think our defense just looked average.
- 12:07It didn't look anything special today.
- 12:10Very...
- 12:10We got snippets of above average, but not anything that was like,"Man, this is a great defense." And then mixed bag from special teams.
- 12:18Yeah, yeah.
- 12:19The first, that punt thing just annoyed me so much because hits you directly in the chest, like I don't know why you're dropping it.
- 12:27We got to see some of his rugby skills, though.
- 12:29Yeah.
- 12:30That was kind of cool.
- 12:30That was cool.
- 12:31Um, yeah, and then special teams, but four for four on PATs.
- 12:36He had a 31-yarder.
- 12:38Didn't he miss one?
- 12:38Did I see that right?
- 12:39Did he miss one?
- 12:41No.
- 12:42No Fourth and a missile?
- 12:43All right.
- 12:43Yeah, so- Well, and but we have the drop punt which- Yeah fortunately Scaife was able to get it off.
- 12:52Yeah.
- 12:52Coming out of the second half the first thing we do is we give up a 98-yard kickoff return.
- 12:58We had two blocks on the day but between the drop punt and then giving off the giving up the kickoff return, yeah, it's just all around, guys, it was an all around just sloppy game.
- 13:11Maybe it was our version of the BC game last year where we were just a little bit asleep.
- 13:17And I- Yeah credit to Bebe.
- 13:18Bebe had kinda called this in the sense that it's a noon game, sometimes we're slow to start.
- 13:25Carolina did exactly what he said they were gonna do which was, Run the ball and try to find their tight end.
- 13:31He also said that with scripted plays, like the first series which were all scripted plays, um they were able to march on us.
- 13:41Yeah.
- 13:41So I don't know.
- 13:43Hopefully it's a bunch of 18, 22-year-old young men who have been hearing a little bit too much about how good they were coming off that Purdue game and switched off a little bit.
- 13:55Plus the early start, plus, the, the weather conditions.
- 13:59Anyways, a win's a win.
- 14:00We'll take it.
- 14:01Time to move on.
- 14:03Yeah.
- 14:03Um, let's go over game balls, guys.
- 14:06So offense cal who you got?
- 14:09I have, for my game ball I have Jonas Walton on the offense.
- 14:15I think we already went over it, 23 carries, 120 yards, 5.2 car- yards per carry.
- 14:20And then he also had 20 receiving yards.
- 14:22Yeah.
- 14:24Yeah.
- 14:24Yeah.
- 14:24Yeah, all around good game.
- 14:26It's what we like to see.
- 14:28Like I said, looks like Jadarian Price in card.
- 14:30So.
- 14:30Yeah.
- 14:30He had a nice coming out party which was great to see.
- 14:34William, who you got offensive game ball?
- 14:36C.J.
- 14:37Carr, five total touchdowns.
- 14:40Pretty impressive, right?
- 14:41I like the way that we're using C.J.
- 14:42Carr running the, doing the designed run on the goal line.
- 14:46I forgot to mention that.
- 14:47I really- You like that?
- 14:48I like that.
- 14:48No, he's fra- Ah he, he looks fragile doing it.
- 14:51I don't like that.
- 14:52I, if we're gonna- We, we have running backs that can do the same thing.
- 14:56What's the point?
- 14:57I read today that he checked into that play.
- 15:00He audibled to, into it?
- 15:02Yeah, he audibled to it.
- 15:02So he wants to do it?
- 15:04Yes.
- 15:05Okay.
- 15:05That's what I read.
- 15:06Dad, who's your game ball?
- 15:08My game ball is gonna go to Jordan Faizon.
- 15:12I thought Faizon was exceptional.
- 15:14He was unbelievable the first half.
- 15:19Over 100 yards receiving in the first half.
- 15:22Again, he tends just to be everywhere in the right place, the right time.
- 15:25Obviously C.J.
- 15:27wants to find him.
- 15:28So really, really, impressive performance from him.
- 15:32Defense, who you got?
- 15:34William, game ball.
- 15:36Luke Talich, couple of CFLs.
- 15:39The pick, which was great.
- 15:41I can't remember, who was he covering when he made that interception?
- 15:44He wasn't covering anybody, but- Who Yeah, he was it was D.J.
- 15:47McKinnie was the guy who got burned.
- 15:50He didn't get burned.
- 15:51Yeah, I think he just let him.
- 15:52He- Yeah he knew he had Talich behind him.
- 15:54And that's a great play by Talich, so I just Talich knows what he's doing and it's nice.
- 15:59Yeah, he looks i, I mean, I haven't watched the footage of Tay Johnson last year, but like this is very impressive.
- 16:06Yeah, he's not nearly the athlete that Tay is, but he is a ball hawk.
- 16:10He knows where that ball is going.
- 16:11Yeah, he, he was getting picks last year as a second string.
- 16:14Yeah.
- 16:14Yeah.
- 16:15He had like, what, three, four interceptions?
- 16:16Yeah, three, but if I'm gonna be honest, he got three in garbage time.
- 16:21He's got more picks than both Moore and Hamilton.
- 16:26Well, obviously because no one's throwing Moore's way.
- 16:28I understand.
- 16:29What do you mean?
- 16:30Well Yeah.
- 16:32People aren't throwing Moore's way.
- 16:33Moore had two picks his freshman year.
- 16:35Yeah.
- 16:36And I think five or six his sophomore year.
- 16:39I don't think he had that much.
- 16:40Yeah.
- 16:40He did.
- 16:40I'm talking about, I'm talking about career picks.
- 16:43Talich has got more- Talich is- He's also a senior okay.
- 16:48No, no, all right, it's fine.
- 16:49He's also a walk-on Yeah, that's fair.
- 16:52Wow.
- 16:56Okay.
- 16:57My defensive game ball goes to Leonard Moore.
- 17:01They threw to him a good amount and Jordan Shipp had that one one-handed snag in the beginning of UNC's first drive where I was like,"I'd let them throw that a lot because he, one, he's not making that play every single time and two, Leonard Moore's guarding him." Two passes broken up, couple tackles.
- 17:21He gets my game ball.
- 17:23Okay.
- 17:24And then I'm gonna go with Bubacar Traore.
- 17:27Um- I like that.
- 17:28Traore had six tackles like William said.
- 17:32He had four QB hurries w- the most important of which was maybe the first or second play from scrimmage where he murdered Billy Edwards.
- 17:40That was the, that was their first or second play af- in their second drive.
- 17:46In the second drive, correct.
- 17:47Yeah.
- 17:47And KVA was on that ball, which was nice to see.
- 17:50Which was awesome.
- 17:51Yeah.
- 17:51Which was awesome.
- 17:52I have a bit of a question there.
- 17:53Yeah.
- 17:54I think it's kinda weird that you're giving a game ball to a defensive player who didn't, or a defensive end who didn't get a single sack.
- 18:00Don't you think that's a little strange?
- 18:02He had five, he had four QB hurries.
- 18:04He bas- First of all- He was in their backfield most of the day.
- 18:07Yeah.
- 18:08And- Well, that's a, a rusher's job speaking of which, getting into the backfield, I noticed frequently our D-line was getting to their backfield on runs.
- 18:19Carolina did not run the ball well, guys.
- 18:21No.
- 18:22They had 77 total yards rushing.
- 18:24Yeah.
- 18:24That's six games in a row we've held the opponent to less than 100 yards rushing.
- 18:28If you're doing that, particularly with this pass defense prior to yesterday- we should be killing teams.
- 18:36We- And we have up to this point.
- 18:39No, no, no, no.
- 18:39This is a wake-up call.
- 18:40This is exactly what it is.
- 18:42It's a wake-up call.
- 18:42We're playing Stanford this week.
- 18:45It's gonna be a bloodbath.
- 18:47It's gonna be a bloodbath.
- 18:49I hope so.
- 18:49I hope so.
- 18:50Hey Calvin, wild card.
- 18:52Who you got?
- 18:52Uh, my wild card is Anthony Knapp.
- 18:56I thought he completely shut down Xavier Lewis.
- 19:00There was just a play where he just completely destroyed him.
- 19:04He, he was violent out there.
- 19:06He literally he sat on him a couple times.
- 19:08He, pancaked him, and then he decided to belly flop right onto him.
- 19:13It was nice to see great blocking out of him.
- 19:15Yeah, I, I agree completely.
- 19:17You never really heard Xavier Lewis' name called much yesterday, so obviously the interior linemen were doing a good job.
- 19:25And hey, kudos to Sullivan Absher.
- 19:26Yeah, you also- I think he did a decent job.
- 19:28William, wild card, who do you got?
- 19:30Yeah, my wild card game ball is the Notre Dame, fan section.
- 19:34There was a great turnout.
- 19:35There were a lot of people there.
- 19:36They were loud and rowdy, arguably louder than the North Carolina fans.
- 19:42I thought the turnout for North Carolina was actually horrendous.
- 19:44The stadium was half full at best.
- 19:47Who'd that remind you of?
- 19:48USC.
- 19:48Yeah.
- 19:48You know, your mom made a great point, after the game yesterday.
- 19:54She goes,"You know, the more I think about it, I think USC and North Carolina are two very similar schools." I like that.
- 20:01It was a great point by Mom Bear.
- 20:01Yeah, I agree.
- 20:03Yeah.
- 20:04And as Bebe said, both are soft as Charmin.
- 20:07Yeah, and my wild card, uh, I'm gonna go really unconventional this week.
- 20:11I'm gonna give my wild card to Game Ball to Bebe.
- 20:15I thought Bebe's points last week were extremely relevant, and I think they showed up in the game yesterday.
- 20:22He had mentioned how Belichick and Petrino would have two weeks to prepare, and they came out and they, executed on what they wanted to do.
- 20:31He specifically warned about scripted opening drive, and sure enough, that's what Carolina looked really, really good then too.
- 20:39So Beebs, if you're listening, congrats man.
- 20:42You get a game ball.
- 20:43All right.
- 20:45On to our next section, the Stanford preview Matthew I'm doing Stanford this week.
- 20:53You're doing Stanford this week.
- 20:54Yeah, so hey, for everybody who doesn't know this, I worked at Stanford University for two years directly out of college as a swim coach for their women's swimming team.
- 21:07And while I was there, we played Stanford twice, and we lost both games.
- 21:14Not great.
- 21:16And another fun fact, my relationship with Stanford University is when I was a senior in high school and was getting recruited by Notre Dame, initially they wanted me to come up on my recruiting trip for the Stanford-Notre Dame game, and unfortunately some things happened with scheduling, and I couldn't make it up to that game.
- 21:37And what was interesting about that game that was the fall of'92, in the'92 season, Notre Dame was stacked.
- 21:43Rick Mirer was the quarterback.
- 21:45Reggie Brooks was on the team.
- 21:48Bryant, BY, Bryant Young, was on the team.
- 21:51Aaron Taylor.
- 21:52We were just stacked all over the place.
- 21:55We went into that game.
- 21:56We went up 16-nothing really quickly, and then we conceded like 32 straight points.
- 22:03So I'm glad I didn't go up to that game for my recruiting trip, and instead had gone up to see Boston College-Notre Dame, which we completely annihilated them.
- 22:14Mm.
- 22:14Which was a lot more fun.
- 22:16Yeah.
- 22:16And I got to be in a crowd scene for Rudy, which was kind of fun, too.
- 22:21Yeah.
- 22:21Anyway, a long way of saying I've got history with Stanford.
- 22:24I root for Stanford when they're not playing Notre Dame, mostly'cause of that history and because our two guest pickers that will be coming on here shortly, Uncle Rob and Aunt Gabrielle, they both went to Stanford, so There's a lot of love for the Stanford Cardinal.
- 22:41It's a unique university that really, really appreciate.
- 22:45Uh, the football team at one point in the mid-2010s Was good They were good.
- 22:53They had Christian McCaffrey, Andrew Luck.
- 22:56They had Richard Sherman.
- 22:58They suck now.
- 22:59They're awful.
- 22:59They are really not good right now.
- 23:02They went and hired Andrew Luck to be their GM, and that's a great hire, on paper, but I think executing in this NIL world is a completely different deal, and they have a harder time recruiting than we do with equally as hard, if not a little bit harder, academic standards to get through, and they're just not doing what they have been able to do in the past from a recruiting perspective.
- 23:29How they're doing right now, Stanford is two and three, all right?
- 23:33One and three in the ACC under first-year head coach Tavita Pritchard, who also played with Luck back in the day.
- 23:39Their only wins are against Hawaii in the first game of the season, and then Georgia Tech from two weeks ago, which is kind of a head-scratcher, to be honest with you.
- 23:50And then they've got some really bad losses.
- 23:52Mensah just chewed them up with Miami.
- 23:56Uh, they went on the road, lost to Duke, and then went on the road this past weekend and got annihilated by a decent Wake team.
- 24:04Wake's...
- 24:04No, Wake's, Wake's good.
- 24:06Wake's, Wake's...
- 24:07Yeah, Wake's solid.
- 24:08They're, they're, like it's, it's a decent team.
- 24:10They're good.
- 24:11But they just got killed.
- 24:12So Stanford's lost 13 straight road games.
- 24:16They were in Wake F- they were at Wake Forest this past week.
- 24:20They gotta go back to s- to Palo Alto, go back now to South Bend for a 3:30 kick, which is 12:30 their time.
- 24:29I, you know, I...
- 24:31This is one of the issues with conference realignment.
- 24:34These guys' body clocks are probably all over the place.
- 24:37I think it'll be really rough for these guys.
- 24:39They're, they are awful.
- 24:42Um, they are awful rushing team.
- 24:45They average 88 yards A game rushing, so they have to rely totally on passing Yeah, and I saw something that said last week they rushed the ball 34 times and got 49 rushing yards That's not good That's awful and- At all if they're gonna meet KVA in the A gap, then they're just gonna get killed.
- 25:09Yeah, I just, you know, this one again just screams of complete bloodbath.
- 25:17I don't know what else to say about these guys.
- 25:19They, these They've got players who ag- against like opponents can play well, but- Yeah I think this is a massive talent gap here.
- 25:31Mm-hmm.
- 25:32Definitely.
- 25:32And hopefully it's nothing like the game from 2023- Oh my God when we went up there- That's- and one of us- That might have been the worst game I've ever experienced.
- 25:45Where at NIU?
- 25:46No.
- 25:47No, in person.
- 25:48No, no, no.
- 25:49Oh.
- 25:49Just in general.
- 25:50It was freezing cold, raining, and that was probably some of the worst football I've seen there at any point.
- 25:55That might've been the worst game I've seen ever.
- 25:57We had Michael Mayer, though.
- 25:59And?
- 26:00He didn't do- It was awful.
- 26:01There- Tobias Merriweather played good.
- 26:04Yeah.
- 26:04It was, it was a bad game.
- 26:06But that was fun because, we got to take your cousins up to the game and especially your cousin Luke got to witness Stanford winning, so there was some silver linings there I guess for somebody in our family.
- 26:17Um, but yeah, it, it, I hope this is how these games have gone in the past, the past several years where we're throwing up 50 or 60 on them.
- 26:28Um- We will and I, I...
- 26:31For me, guys, what I wanna see out of this game is I wanna see the passing defense show back up.
- 26:38Let's get back to who we are.
- 26:40Let's be ferocious.
- 26:43Let's be really aggressive.
- 26:46Show me what you did against Purdue.
- 26:49Show me what you did against all the other teams except Carolina, and let's get after these guys and go into the week preparing for BYU after this weekend.
- 27:00But let's take care of this Stanford team now.
- 27:04Yeah.
- 27:05This is the first game where we didn't score more than 40.
- 27:09Uh, I don't know.
- 27:12We're just gonna kill them.
- 27:14Uh, my score prediction- I think the only reason we didn't score more than 40 was because we had 37 minutes of possession time.
- 27:22That's a lot of possession.
- 27:23Yeah, that's what I'm saying, that, like, the clock was running so fast we didn't have time to score 40.
- 27:28Well, we were running like- That's part of the deal.
- 27:29Yeah, it was'cause we had chosen to, in the second half, to run, and that's what we were gonna do.
- 27:34Well, we, we should- By the way, we scored 27 against Michigan State.
- 27:38My fault.
- 27:39It's all good.
- 27:40It's, it's not as bad as Riley Mills and Howard Cross, but- Yeah, it's, it's no problem.
- 27:45No problem.
- 27:46It- that's worse than Riley Mills and Howard Cross.
- 27:48No, it wasn't because you completely forgot about them.
- 27:53I think Michigan State might have been in the back of my mind.
- 27:56Riley Mills and Howard Cross were just out of your mind.
- 28:00All right, guys, let's get Uncle Rob and Aunt Gabrielle on the phone.
- 28:06National, national champion Aunt Gabrielle.
- 28:09Yeah.
- 28:10Olympian Aunt Gabrielle, and tried to walk on Robert Barker Jr.
- 28:18Tried to walk on.
- 28:19All right, uh, let's get these guys on.
- 28:24All right, let's get Uncle Rob and Aunt Gabrielle on the phone.
- 28:29All right.
- 28:31Yeah.
- 28:32Hi, guys.
- 28:33What's going on?
- 28:34Hey, y'all.
- 28:36Can you say hi?
- 28:37Hi, Robert.
- 28:38Get your- get your guys- Where are the nephews?
- 28:39Get in.
- 28:41Yeah, let me get those guys on screen.
- 28:42Hey, guys.
- 28:46Thanks for, making time, y'all.
- 28:48This is a true treat.
- 28:50Do we get any nieces or nephews?
- 28:52Do we get any cousins joining?
- 28:54I, I might get Luke to make a little, cameo here.
- 28:57It kind of depends how this conversation goes.
- 29:01Well, we spared you guys from the, Stanford scouting report.
- 29:04You guys are, like, you guys are terrible.
- 29:07That game- Terrible yesterday was awful.
- 29:1049 rushing yards on 34 attempts.
- 29:14That is terrible.
- 29:16That is awful.
- 29:18Houston Christian- You- the School of Blind and Deaf could've done better.
- 29:23They can't even see their blocks.
- 29:25I like the, the, I like the coaching staff stuck to their game plan.
- 29:28Like, the 34th time they ran it at all.
- 29:30But yeah.
- 29:31The beatings will persist until, until, everybody's attitude improves, right?
- 29:39I gotta, like, introduce you guys really quickly.
- 29:41Okay?
- 29:43Okay.
- 29:43All right.
- 29:44Hey, joining us today are two of some of our favorite people in the world, Uncle Rob, Rob Barger, and Aunt Gabrielle, Gabrielle Rose, my sister.
- 29:56Rob's my, my brother-in-law.
- 29:58And Rob is a graduate of Stanford University in 1996.
- 30:04Correct?
- 30:04Yes, sir.
- 30:05And Gabrielle is a former swimming national champion, two-time Olympian, and, World record holder for Olympic trials at 45, and Rob tried to walk onto the Stanford basketball team as a freshman, so- I don't think he tried.
- 30:22I think he did.
- 30:22No, I, I was unsuccessful, to set the record fully straight.
- 30:25Unsuccessful.
- 30:26Okay.
- 30:27Well, you know.
- 30:28Hey, we like the effort, though.
- 30:29What about high, what about high school record holder?
- 30:35Yeah.
- 30:35Well, yeah.
- 30:37I think it's, I think, I mean, I don't know about Gabrielle, but I think, I think it's all a very strategic move by, by the mighty Cardinal.
- 30:44And, you know, the, the first-year coach, Tavita Pritchard, is really trying to catch the Irish snoozing.
- 30:49You know, there was a, there was a time- just a few years ago where Stanford- Be quiet came to South Bend.
- 30:55Big underdogs.
- 30:56You know, so...
- 30:57I mean, what do you think, Gabrielle?
- 30:58What do you, what do you, what do you, what do you think is going- Yeah through the coaching staff's mind?
- 31:00Let's, I think they're just trying to relive...
- 31:02What was that year again?
- 31:04Well, I don't wanna talk about it.
- 31:05Not too, too long ago.
- 31:062023?
- 31:07Or are you talking about the- 2022 the Harbaugh- Yeah the Harbaugh era?
- 31:10How many games had they lost before that?
- 31:13They were on quite a losing streak.
- 31:1611 games, 11-game losing streak, and then what was the final score in that game?
- 31:20I don't wanna talk about it.
- 31:21I think it was, like, 17 to 14, right?
- 31:23I don't wanna talk about it.
- 31:2417 to 14, yep.
- 31:25Stanford.
- 31:26I don't wanna talk about it.
- 31:27It's possible, people.
- 31:29That might have been my worst experience in Notre Dame Stadium, ever.
- 31:34It was cold, it was rainy, and it was awful football.
- 31:39It was terrible.
- 31:40Hey, but your cousins were happy.
- 31:42I don't care.
- 31:43It was awful.
- 31:46You're right.
- 31:47You're right.
- 31:48Well, yep.
- 31:49And then on the other end of the spectrum, I think there's a real chance for a shutout.
- 31:54So I'm gonna ask, ask you, Matthew, but I'm gonna ask the boys this.
- 32:00So true or false, did Notre Dame have a two-game shutout or more, when your mom and dad were in school?
- 32:08No.
- 32:10False.
- 32:11False.
- 32:12False.
- 32:13True.
- 32:14True.
- 32:14True.
- 32:15Most recent one was 2002, but back in 1996- Against Rutgers and Purdue.
- 32:25Wow.
- 32:26Mm.
- 32:26Mm.
- 32:26That Rutgers game would've been my last home game- As a senior.
- 32:31Oh.
- 32:31And I remember that.
- 32:32Yeah.
- 32:32Wow.
- 32:33Yeah.
- 32:34Okay.
- 32:34I wonder why I don't remember it.
- 32:37It's possible.
- 32:37They could be on their way.
- 32:37When, when was, when was, uh, Stanford's last shutout?
- 32:42When was that?
- 32:42No, we don't talk about that.
- 32:43Under Harbaugh.
- 32:44Look, guys, under Harbaugh- Yeah, the...
- 32:46I watched the Iowa CMC highlights.
- 32:49Yeah.
- 32:49No, no, no, I'm actually interested.
- 32:50It- When was, when was Stanford's last shutout?
- 32:52Let's talk about where this rivalry is.
- 32:54Yes, in the past 16 years, where are we at here?
- 33:00Rob, what do you think it is?
- 33:00Let me think about this I'm guessing it's 10-6 Irish in the last 16 games.
- 33:06I think it's 12-4.
- 33:08I think it's 9-7 Irish I think it's 11 to 5 Irish.
- 33:15Of course you do, William.
- 33:19What is it?
- 33:21It's 8-8.
- 33:228-8.
- 33:23Really?
- 33:23Ooh.
- 33:23Over the last 16 years.
- 33:25That's, that's wild.
- 33:26Yeah.
- 33:26That's interesting.
- 33:28Yeah.
- 33:29Yeah.
- 33:29Well, boy, Gabrielle, thank you for doing your homework,'cause I was planning to just show up here.
- 33:34Like, my main question is, do you think that they'll go running clock in this game?
- 33:42Whip out the high school rules.
- 33:44Yeah.
- 33:45Will there be a fourth quarter?
- 33:46I mean, I, I don't know.
- 33:47Oh.
- 33:47There might not.
- 33:48We were just saying how I think it's awful that all this conference realignment's just ridiculous, right?
- 33:55But- You guys shouldn't be in the ACC.
- 33:57Yeah.
- 33:57I don't know what you guys are doing.
- 33:58It's the Atlantic Coast Conference, not the- Yeah, Stanford goes out to Wake.
- 34:02Was it a 3:30 kick?
- 34:04I don't even know.
- 34:04Was it a noon kick?
- 34:05I don't know.
- 34:06I don't know.
- 34:07So they go all the way out to Wake.
- 34:08They play Wake.
- 34:09They fly back home, and now they gotta come back out to the Midwest.
- 34:12Yeah.
- 34:12Yeah.
- 34:12No one knows what time it is.
- 34:15This is insane.
- 34:16It's insane.
- 34:16I think it does work both ways.
- 34:18I'll say I don't know what your take on this is, Gabrielle, but didn't, didn't Georgia Tech get a little case of up past our bedtime-itis last, last week?
- 34:27Did you see that game?
- 34:27Well, I, I, I would've liked that to have been the case, but what I read actually happens, they, they had eight injured players, at least eight.
- 34:34Like- Tech did?
- 34:35could be potentially affected.
- 34:36But yeah.
- 34:36I was trying to make the case for myself that Stanford's not due for a shutout here, um, after- You guys are- yesterday let's do score predictions real quick.
- 34:47We'll, we'll do score predictions.
- 34:48I'd love Stanford to be good.
- 34:50Right.
- 34:50Another- Hold on a second.
- 34:51Hold on.
- 34:51Oh, thank you, William.
- 34:53I don't.
- 34:54Stanford's really good about overall athletics.
- 34:57Yeah, I was at- Yes, we are.
- 34:58William, you'll appreciate this one.
- 35:00Mm-hmm.
- 35:00I was, I was at this event.
- 35:01I, I know Gabrielle will definitely appreciate this.
- 35:03I was at this Stanford did this event in Atlanta, a couple weeks ago.
- 35:06The new president, coming out to the different metropolitan areas and engaging with alumni.
- 35:11It's called Open Minds.
- 35:12Hmm.
- 35:13They did it at the High Museum.
- 35:14It was actually a really cool event.
- 35:15Nice.
- 35:15They had some professors come out and talk about different topics.
- 35:18It was actually really- Hmm fun for nerds like myself.
- 35:21But one of the Q&A from the audience, you know, after, after they asked all the Trump questions, one of the Q&A questions- was,"Hey, uh, what's going on with the football team?" And I think the president handled it really well.
- 35:35He was"You know," at, at that point at least, the entire athletic department had only lost one game all fall.
- 35:42Hmm.
- 35:42And it was the football team.
- 35:43He's like,"You know, you're asking the wrong question, guys." That was his first deflection.
- 35:46Mm-hmm.
- 35:47And then his second deflection was,"I would like to talk about where our football program's gonna be two to three years from now." So I think that's nice.
- 35:54Still garbage.
- 35:57You know, I think- Still garbage I think that's what we stick with I, if you- I think it depends how much money they wanna put into the sport.
- 36:03I think that's all, that's all it depends.
- 36:05The university clearly has the money to devote to it.
- 36:08It- And they've got alumni who they can call on.
- 36:10If you clean dog poop, it's still dog poop.
- 36:13It's not gonna be- any different.
- 36:15It's just gonna look better and still smell the same, so.
- 36:18Hey, guys, I You don't remember those Harbaugh teams.
- 36:21Calvin, why don't you want Stanford to succeed?
- 36:23Yeah.
- 36:23It'd be nice to have another- Because they're our rivals.
- 36:26It'd be nice to have another- Oh, man academically- Yeah, bro, we- Wait, wait they still think of them as rivals.
- 36:31I thought they were about to drop us from their schedule.
- 36:36Yeah, just like you did USC?
- 36:38Oh my God.
- 36:39Oh my gosh.
- 36:40I thought that's the one thing that all of us could unite on.
- 36:43Oh, I'm not keeping the Stanford family going.
- 36:45I feel like I'm being@'d, Calvin.
- 36:46How dare you?
- 36:49USC.
- 36:51Come on.
- 36:52What, how did my- What'd you do?
- 36:52No, Cal, Cal, Cal, Cal, don't say it.
- 36:55Don't say it.
- 36:56Calvin, I think that's a great research question, though,'cause it w- it was William that said we just gotta decide to spend some money on football, right?
- 37:03Yeah.
- 37:04Mm-hmm.
- 37:04Yeah, so Calvin, y- that might be a good follow-up, or maybe you can even do it live, is if you could just poll what is Notre Dame spending on football and what is Stanford spending on football?
- 37:14I know Notre Dame has close to a 40 million roster right now.
- 37:19I know that right now.
- 37:20Yeah, The Athletic did an article on this a couple weeks ago, and I can't remember where Stanford was.
- 37:23Oh, yeah.
- 37:24Yeah.
- 37:24Yeah.
- 37:25Stanford- Because they were, they were so far down the page- that you didn't, you didn't make it that far down Wait, 40 million- They were definitely, yeah, left corner quadrant 40 million on the entire roster?
- 37:34Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:35We spend, like, 40 million.
- 37:35What was the top one, 100 mil?
- 37:37No.
- 37:38No.
- 37:38No, no, no, no, no.
- 37:39Like- It's, like, 45, 50.
- 37:41There's- And what was it, Oregon?
- 37:43No.
- 37:44It might've been, like, USC or something.
- 37:46No.
- 37:46No, no, no.
- 37:47No, USC.
- 37:47It was, uh I think it was, like, LSU.
- 37:49This is bad radio, by the way.
- 37:51Um- It's gotta be LSU.
- 37:52Yeah, I think it was LSU.
- 37:53Yeah.
- 37:54LSU or Ohio State, you know.
- 37:57Can we talk about some other fun Stanford things?
- 37:59Gabrielle, you got some Stanford knowledge you wanna share?
- 38:03I do.
- 38:04Guys, what do you know about the Stanford band?
- 38:10Nothing.
- 38:11Here we go.
- 38:13Nothing.
- 38:15Okay.
- 38:15So you can't explain to me why the Stanford band will not be allowed to be in the Notre Dame stadium- Did they like- this Saturday?
- 38:24Did they play Tribute to Troy against us one time and we just kicked them out or something?
- 38:29What'd they do?
- 38:30Oh, did they play during the alma mater?
- 38:33No.
- 38:33No.
- 38:34It's even better.
- 38:35Nope.
- 38:36Oh.
- 38:36So- Paint the, paint the picture this did not get them banned.
- 38:39This did not get them banned, but in the early'90s the Stanford band leader, drum leader wore a nun's costume- and conducted things holding a crucifix.
- 38:53Rob was there probably.
- 38:55I was.
- 38:56If I remember correctly, they had some people dressed up as cardinals as well, like church cardinals.
- 39:02Which, yes.
- 39:06But- And guys, this was a, like this is the Stanford band.
- 39:09This is what they do.
- 39:09When they played East Carolina at the Liberty Bowl- when I was in high school- Uh-huh and the whole halftime show was about how East Carolina was the 51st state.
- 39:21And they were dest- they were destroyed in the Civil War.
- 39:26And that's the reason we have 50 states as opposed to 51.
- 39:30So this is, this is the Stanford band.
- 39:32All right.
- 39:32Sorry, continue.
- 39:33Yeah.
- 39:33And so yes, just yes, to give you a little more context, they are not a typical marching band that goes around doing things in formation.
- 39:40That is not important.
- 39:41They're what you'd call a scatter band, so they love to be irreverent and focus on satire.
- 39:46So they tried a, another tactic in the 1997 game when I was at school.
- 39:51I think they were visiting Notre Dame.
- 39:54And this one was the famous one called, These Irish, Why Must You Fight?
- 40:05So I just wanted, before I tell you what happened during that, guys, why are you the Fighting Irish?
- 40:11Um, because some random dude from Ireland came over and he was like,"Fighting Irish." Like that's perfect name.
- 40:19He founded the university based on, um, Catholic- No, it was- culture, right?
- 40:23two f- two French priests founded the university.
- 40:25Two French priests.
- 40:26Founded the university.
- 40:27Huh.
- 40:27Well, bonjour.
- 40:29Why are we the Fighting Irish, Gabrielle?
- 40:31I thought you guys were gonna say, because you're brave and take on challenges and you don't give up.
- 40:37Mm.
- 40:37Right?
- 40:37Mm-hmm.
- 40:38'Cause we love potatoes and we drink beer.
- 40:42So interestingly enough, and I'm gonna have to be careful here, this was a negative stereotype about the Irish, right?
- 40:49That they were drunkards, and they would get into fights.
- 40:52Mm-hmm.
- 40:53Right?
- 40:53So they took this narra- negative stereotype about the Irish people, and Notre Dame pointed, said,"Fine, you're gonna have that?
- 41:01We're gonna, we're gonna take it and make it into a positive thing." So they fully embraced it, and now we think of Fighting Irish, and we only think of it as a positive thing.
- 41:09The Stanford Band was just trying to bring to attention that, this whole journey of co-opting the negative stereotype.
- 41:18That's all they were doing, just trying to make a, a really good point there about history.
- 41:22What...
- 41:23Wasn't the halftime show based on, like, the potato famine?
- 41:27Or di- didn't they also have some priests doing some non-priesty things?
- 41:33They brought everything, everything into that show.
- 41:34Yeah.
- 41:34Yeah.
- 41:34They brought it all, okay.
- 41:35Yeah.
- 41:35Oh, oh, that was all one show?
- 41:38Yeah.
- 41:38I remember them saying something- Usually it's spread out over a few years.
- 41:41Yeah.
- 41:41I remember them saying something like,"The only thing that the Irish are good for are starving." It was, it was awesome satire.
- 41:52It's like- It was satire they...
- 41:54Yeah, it was satire.
- 41:54Can we just...
- 41:55Can we joke about some stuff?
- 41:56So'97 was the last time the band went to South Bend, Gabrielle?
- 42:00Mm-hmm.
- 42:01Yeah.
- 42:01That would be another good trivia question.
- 42:02I, actually, it was the, it was the game, was the g- I think the game was at Stanford.
- 42:06I think I said it was at Notre Dame.
- 42:07But anyways, the, the president got involved, the athletic director, they had to apologize, and ever since Stanford Band has been banned, so including when I went to swim there my senior year in 2000.
- 42:21No band and no band since.
- 42:24Nice.
- 42:25No.
- 42:26Yeah.
- 42:26Can you guys name every place that the Stanford Band is banned from?
- 42:32This bed is not long enough.
- 42:34I'm pretty sure the State of Oregon is on the list.
- 42:37I'm pretty sure United Airlines is on the list.
- 42:40I'm pretty sure Disneyland's on the list.
- 42:43I would have to go look it up to, to get current.
- 42:45But yeah, okay.
- 42:46All right, so our band is undefeated.
- 42:48Yes.
- 42:49Nice.
- 42:49Yeah.
- 42:49Yes.
- 42:50I love the band.
- 42:51The band's fantastic.
- 42:52All right.
- 42:53All right, guys, let's get into some scores.
- 42:54Who wants to go first on scores?
- 42:56I'll go first.
- 42:57I'll go first.
- 42:57Oh, yeah, you're gonna lead this off?
- 42:59No, I'll go...
- 42:59Make it so simple.
- 43:0156 to six.
- 43:03It's gonna be a 50-point blowout.
- 43:05I'm gonna...
- 43:06You guys might score a touchdown, and then you'll get blocked or you'll try to go for two or something and you'll just get denied.
- 43:15All right.
- 43:16Yeah.
- 43:16All right.
- 43:17William, you have a score prediction?
- 43:2054 to 10.
- 43:2154-10, okay.
- 43:23Whoa.
- 43:24That's a lot of points there, William.
- 43:27Uncle Rob, what do you, who do you got?
- 43:29Well, Vegas has us as 36 and a half point dogs, I believe, which I think is I just don't think there's anyone even close to that.
- 43:38I'm not sure if there's even a 20-point spread on any- Mm of the games other than that.
- 43:41So like between Vegas and the boys, I really, you know, I can't say 80 to nothing.
- 43:46Like, th- that's just not fun, right?
- 43:48So- I'll go, I'll g- I'll go with the very brave prediction of Irish 34, Cardinal 13.
- 43:5534, okay.
- 43:56That's not bad.
- 43:57Yeah.
- 43:57Wow.
- 43:58What do you mean that's not bad?
- 43:59That's- That's not awful.
- 44:00I hear you.
- 44:01He, uh- We would consider that to be one of the greatest- He's gotta be a little biased.
- 44:03He's gotta be a little bit biased blows.
- 44:04He's gotta think that our offense is gonna stop.
- 44:07All right.
- 44:07Well, was that wrong?
- 44:09No, I'm just saying like, I think your third string against our starters, we can score 13 points.
- 44:14So.
- 44:15That's, that's fair.
- 44:16That's fair.
- 44:17That is completely fair.
- 44:17That's fair.
- 44:18Yeah.
- 44:18Oh, see, this is why he went to Stanford.
- 44:20He's thinking about all these different permutations.
- 44:22Mm-hmm.
- 44:23All right.
- 44:24Gabriella.
- 44:26What do you got?
- 44:27Okay.
- 44:28I'm big fans of your podcast.
- 44:30I listen every week and know a lot more about Notre Dame football now than Stanford football, and I'm just convinced, Calvin, that your defense is something just insurmountable.
- 44:42So I'm gonna go with Irish 49, Stanford 3.
- 44:49Oh, wow.
- 44:49Ooh.
- 44:50And I'm gonna call it a big win for Stanford for not having a- Oh, yeah shutout.
- 44:55Yeah.
- 44:55I like that.
- 44:56Yeah.
- 44:56You, you have me convinced, Calvin.
- 44:58Yep.
- 45:00All right.
- 45:01You've already gone, William?
- 45:02I already went.
- 45:03What is yours?
- 45:04Yeah, he went- I'm, I'm not telling you'cause you're gonna lowball me.
- 45:06No, He likes to do that to me.
- 45:08I've been the one who's been overzealous the last couple weeks.
- 45:10Okay.
- 45:11So let's hear it.
- 45:12And I think I'm gonna be overzealous again.
- 45:15I think it's gonna be 52 to 0.
- 45:19I'm just gonna- So, so Freeman's not bringing in the, the walk-ons is what you're saying.
- 45:27I think they're gonna bring in the walk-ons.
- 45:28I think these guys are gonna get crushed at practice this week- Yeah after this last weekend.
- 45:35So I don't know what to say.
- 45:38This is a...
- 45:39William, before the, the last several calls, William's been the aggressive one.
- 45:43I know I've been super aggressive.
- 45:45So- Mm maybe I'm just trying to manifest.
- 45:48But I'm winning right now.
- 45:50Anything else, guys?
- 45:51I've missed a couple of the podcasts, so I didn't, I have not had a chance to hear the Rever- like, who's, who's been your most popular guest picker so- Well, well, Bebe, Bebe two minutes in of him talking started talking about slavery.
- 46:05So I said the wrong name of the stadium.
- 46:07He goes,"No, no, no.
- 46:08It's, it's, like, Joseph Keenan Stadium." He goes,"Named after a notorious slave owner." I'm like,"And we're off." Here we go.
- 46:19No, one of my, one of my good friends, BJ, out in Seattle, they listen, and his wife listens very religiously.
- 46:26Shout out to you, Honey.
- 46:28She texted us this week.
- 46:29She's like,"You gotta make sure that Bebe is on every week.
- 46:34He rocks." So he got a lot of fans.
- 46:38And then afterwards he was like,"Hey, if you guys wanna have me on again, I'd love to be on again." He loved it.
- 46:44Yeah.
- 46:44He had a good time.
- 46:45And he was great.
- 46:46That's good.
- 46:46Yeah.
- 46:47I gave him my wildcard game ball this week.
- 46:49He, he might be your Stanford Steve.
- 46:51Exactly.
- 46:52Exactly.
- 46:53Yeah.
- 46:53Yeah.
- 46:54He's awesome.
- 46:55Nice.
- 46:55So I'm sure we'll get, you know, everybody wanting to get you guys on for Suspect- Right.
- 47:00Suspect Parts.
- 47:03The band Historians.
- 47:04The band Historians.
- 47:06Hey, don't forget to tell- Gabrielle, true or false, you must be able to play at least one musical instrument to be in the Stanford band?
- 47:14Ask the guys.
- 47:16Is that true?
- 47:18No.
- 47:19Nope.
- 47:19Do you have to be able to play any band, any musical instrument?
- 47:22No.
- 47:22You can play the kazoo?
- 47:24No.
- 47:25No.
- 47:25I mean, no.
- 47:26You can play nothing.
- 47:26Nothing.
- 47:27You can just act.
- 47:28You can play nothing.
- 47:29Are you serious?
- 47:29You can dance.
- 47:30Oh, okay.
- 47:31Dead serious.
- 47:32Stanford.
- 47:33Dance.
- 47:33That's very cool.
- 47:33Write, write really funny jokes.
- 47:35Just know how to scatter.
- 47:36You gotta know how to scatter.
- 47:38Yeah.
- 47:39Yeah.
- 47:39Who knew that I was sending- And then- you to the high school version of Stanford?
- 47:49Calvin and William, I d- I, I'm letting you off easy though,'cause we didn't talk about all the ranked teams that you guys have beaten so far to earn the number three ranking in the country.
- 47:59Come on.
- 48:01Cal, I'm gonna tell you, Gabrielle and I were actually planning to try to take over this whole Domer cast- and just, just, like convert your whole fan base to be Cardinal fans.
- 48:10Like, our game plan, we were gonna come in swinging, and then the Wake Forest game happened- Yeah, yeah and, like, this is us waving the white flag.
- 48:18Mm-hmm.
- 48:19I mean, at this point we just, we just have to agree with you.
- 48:21Yeah, I, I actually thought- We should yeah.
- 48:23Ah, man.
- 48:24And then- Yeah.
- 48:27I was tell, I was giving these guys a little bit of- You haven't thought this through, have you?
- 48:29Yeah.
- 48:29I, I root for Stanford every game besides this game.
- 48:33And it's- Even NC State Stanford?
- 48:36Uh...
- 48:37I think NC State Stanford- Yeah, even NC State Stanford.
- 48:40Aw.
- 48:40Robert, do, do you root for NC State if Stanford plays them or no?
- 48:44Be honest.
- 48:46Hmm.
- 48:48Probably not, but I, you know, I'm finally reaching a point where I don't care a whole lot about college athletics,'cause I've just had my heart broken.
- 48:55You know, NC State plus Stanford as your rooting interests.
- 48:59I mean, there's only so much a man's heart can take.
- 49:03It's like being an Atlanta sports fan.
- 49:07Yeah.
- 49:07Is it?
- 49:08It is.
- 49:08Yeah.
- 49:09Yeah, it is.
- 49:11Well, Stanford, they throw some money at this.
- 49:14I think they're gonna be okay.
- 49:16That's a great piece of insider information on the Stanford president.
- 49:21Yeah.
- 49:22Yeah.
- 49:22Yeah.
- 49:22Yeah.
- 49:23Yeah.
- 49:23They get that payroll up.
- 49:26You have somebody looking at Stanford, someone looking at Notre Dame.
- 49:29You do that at the right time of year, it's hard to turn down palm trees- Yeah and a beautiful football stadium.
- 49:38Palo Alto is nice most of the time.
- 49:40I mean, it wasn't that long ago.
- 49:43Yeah.
- 49:43It wasn't.
- 49:43Yeah.
- 49:44Yeah.
- 49:45Yeah.
- 49:45Yeah.
- 49:4510 years ago.
- 49:47They were dominant, so.
- 49:49I mean, I think we averaged 11 wins over that, like a six-year period or something like that.
- 49:55They used to, like, brutalize us.
- 49:55And may not have had a below 11 wins since.
- 49:57Yeah.
- 49:58They, like, out-Notre Dame-ed that.
- 49:59Like, their offensive and defensive lines were- I know elite.
- 50:03They were good.
- 50:04You know, and then they threw in some good skill players, and always, always good tight ends.
- 50:09Always.
- 50:10Yeah.
- 50:11It's good stuff.
- 50:12A lot of tight ends.
- 50:13And then, you know, every now and then, like an Andrew Luck or somebody.
- 50:15Yeah.
- 50:15And then you got, you got a football team.
- 50:17All right, crew.
- 50:19Hey, thank you.
- 50:21Really appreciate you all Thank you for the invite.
- 50:23Enjoyed it.
- 50:23Good seeing you, Gabrielle.
- 50:24Yeah, thanks.
- 50:25Great seeing you all.
- 50:26Love the pod- Mm-hmm podcast.
- 50:28It's been fun cheering for you.
- 50:30I'm excited for your season, I really, really am.
- 50:32William, thanks for your extra support of Stanford, or, like, a little support- Yeah, yeah of Lake Tahoe.
- 50:36For sure.
- 50:37For sure.
- 50:38And we- And we- Hey, where are the bagpipes gonna be playing, for the, for the championship?
- 50:41Where, where- We're in Vegas.
- 50:43So we've already got our hotel rooms at the Venetian.
- 50:47Okay.
- 50:47So, maybe we can just get them to hop on a bus with us wherever the Vegas stadium is.
- 50:53You guys are g- you're gonna go through a lot of ice luges in Vegas.
- 50:56Oh.
- 50:57That's all I can say.
- 50:57Man.
- 50:57You're gonna need more than one.
- 50:57Yeah.
- 50:58Oh, yeah.
- 50:59I, I just, I dream of Vegas ice luges right now.
- 51:06Good stuff.
- 51:07Good stuff.
- 51:08All right, y'all, thank you very, very much.
- 51:10Bye.
- 51:11Okay.
- 51:11Love to you both.
- 51:12Thank you.
- 51:12Bye.
- 51:12Say love to everybody.
- 51:13All right?
- 51:14Bye.
- 51:14Bye.
- 51:14See you guys.
- 51:15Lots of love.
- 51:15Lots of love.
- 51:16Bye.
- 51:16Good luck.
- 51:17Thanks.
- 51:19What a special treat, guys.
- 51:21Yeah.
- 51:21Thanks Uncle Rob and Gabriel.
- 51:24Yeah.
- 51:25Dropping the knowledge.
- 51:26You guys, I never told you the story about the Stanford band?
- 51:29No.
- 51:29Oh, that's a major dad fail.
- 51:31Yep.
- 51:32Norwin.
- 51:33Yeah.
- 51:34I was really surprised.
- 51:34That's funny.
- 51:35Yeah, it's really funny.
- 51:36Makes, makes me like him more.
- 51:37Oh, 100%.
- 51:38Those guys are really funny guys.
- 51:40All right.
- 51:41Starting 11, just to recap where we are.
- 51:45Here, six pods in, Cal, you've got one win.
- 51:51We've all got one.
- 51:53William technically has two, I guess.
- 51:55I have two.
- 51:56I think we, we yeah, we let that fly.
- 51:58Anyways, just refresh rules of the game.
- 52:01Yeah.
- 52:01Two of us select a player on the one or two deep, and the third person has 11 tries or 11 questions to guess who this person is.
- 52:15And, this week is me,'cause William, you, you did a great job last week.
- 52:20I think you got it in four or five.
- 52:21Yeah.
- 52:22Four.
- 52:22Five.
- 52:23Four or five.
- 52:24Who was it last week?
- 52:24Five.
- 52:25Who, who'd you pick?
- 52:26It was, the backup quarterback.
- 52:28It was Blake Huber.
- 52:29Yeah, it was Blake Huber.
- 52:30Yeah.
- 52:30All right.
- 52:31So I guess that's me.
- 52:32I get to start guessing.
- 52:33Is this player on offense?
- 52:38No.
- 52:38Yes.
- 52:39Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 52:40Oh, yes, yes, yes.
- 52:41Sorry.
- 52:41Sorry Yes.
- 52:42That's one.
- 52:43Okay.
- 52:45Does this player play on the line as a non-receiving player?
- 52:56Yes.
- 52:57Yes.
- 53:00That includes quarterbacks Is this player's primary position an interior lineman?
- 53:07Yes.
- 53:07Yes.
- 53:08So how many is that?
- 53:10That's four or five.
- 53:11No.
- 53:11Yes.
- 53:12It's four.
- 53:13Offense.
- 53:15Offense, line- Interior interior.
- 53:18That's three.
- 53:19It's four.
- 53:22Okay.
- 53:23Is this player a starter?
- 53:30No.
- 53:31Is this player Devin Houston?
- 53:34Yes All right.
- 53:36Yeah.
- 53:36That's- I think after this week- that's six we should do a, a new depth chart.
- 53:40A new depth chart- Yeah or a new, new something.
- 53:42Okay.
- 53:42All right.
- 53:43Hey.
- 53:43Well, we can- Yeah.
- 53:44Props to Dad.
- 53:45Props to Dad.
- 53:45Props to Dad.
- 53:46That was good.
- 53:48Yeah.
- 53:48Thank you.
- 53:49Yeah.
- 53:49Appreciate it.
- 53:50Yeah.
- 53:50All right, guys.
- 53:51Well, week six in the books, for our pod.
- 53:56Irish are 5 and 0, heading back home.
- 53:59First time in Marcus Freeman's career.
- 54:01Yeah, playing Stanford.
- 54:03Hey, Cal?
- 54:04Yeah.
- 54:05You and I are going to the game.
- 54:07Yeah, we are.
- 54:09Yeah.
- 54:10William's gotta stay back home.
- 54:12He's got some soccer stuff he has to attend to.
- 54:15His sister's coming back home for a little short break from Fordham, so he gets to have a good time.
- 54:21Decatur Porchfest, which is always lovely, going on.
- 54:25You're gonna have a great time.
- 54:27Cal?
- 54:28We're gonna have an amazing time.
- 54:30You and I, we're gonna go check it out.
- 54:32We'll be back next week.
- 54:34Just to tease next week's episode, which will be the BYU preview, special guests Elizabeth Rice, Liz Rice, and Ry Beville, two of my teammates from Notre Dame.
- 54:49And the reason they're coming on the podcast is the very first swim meets as freshmen that the three of us swam was an away meet against BYU and Utah.
- 55:03Did you guys lose?
- 55:04Well, that's a spoiler.
- 55:05I'm not gonna spoil it.
- 55:06We'll just tease it.
