- 0:33Speaker 2: All right, let's get to some headlines brought to you
- 0:35Speaker 2: by Frost Brood Coors Light Choose Chill. The World Cup
- 0:39Speaker 2: has ended. We have a champion and that is Spain.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Spain win it one nil over Argentina. They get one
- 0:46Speaker 2: hundred and sixth minute goal by Fernon Torres and that
- 0:50Speaker 2: puts them having their second championship, coming after twenty ten
- 0:54Speaker 2: where they won it in South Africa. Mariners, what a moment.
- 0:57Speaker 2: On Saturday, Cole Young had tied the game with a
- 1:01Speaker 2: three run blast and then the Mariners win that on
- 1:05Speaker 2: Saturday and they catapult that into another win on Sunday.
- 1:08Speaker 2: The turning point there with Cole Young and suddenly the
- 1:10Speaker 2: Mariners are back to fifty and fifty half game out
- 1:13Speaker 2: top of the Al West. New Zealand golfer Ryan Fox
- 1:17Speaker 2: has won the Open Championship after burning the seventy second
- 1:21Speaker 2: hole yesterday at Royal Birkdale. For the Storm. They have
- 1:25Speaker 2: fallen to the Fever on Friday of a score of
- 1:28Speaker 2: one ten to one oh seven, and Michigan Athletic director
- 1:31Speaker 2: Ward Manual will step down at the end of the
- 1:34Speaker 2: calendar year. Let's kick things off on the ten AM show,
- 1:37Speaker 2: shall it ten to noon before Ian Forness takes over?
- 1:39Speaker 2: Jess could be with you.
- 1:40Speaker 3: It's great to be with you.
- 1:42Speaker 4: I think this is probably the best day I could
- 1:44Speaker 4: ever work with you.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Right after the World Cup.
- 1:47Speaker 4: You put in so much hard work over these pasts
- 1:50Speaker 4: and people might not realize it. They hear you, but
- 1:53Speaker 4: they don't realize you're doing one the afternoon Drive show
- 1:56Speaker 4: at the same time as you're doing all of this
- 1:58Speaker 4: World Cup coverage. And I think you Anders, Danny and
- 2:02Speaker 4: Brad did such a great job of bringing it to us.
- 2:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:05Speaker 2: No, I think our entire crew there met Danny Jackson,
- 2:08Speaker 2: Brad Evans. You mentioned them. They're on their way in
- 2:10Speaker 2: studio right now. They're gonna be here in about fifteen minutes.
- 2:13Speaker 2: We're gonna do a kind of I think a decompression
- 2:16Speaker 2: of the World Cup, you know, talking about yesterday's final,
- 2:20Speaker 2: the win for Spain, the legacy of Spain, who were
- 2:23Speaker 2: kind of I mean they took a page on a
- 2:25Speaker 2: Mike McDonald's playbook, like quite literally of we're going to
- 2:29Speaker 2: control and play great defense, not give the other teams
- 2:32Speaker 2: a chance to even score on us. Spain very seahawk
- 2:35Speaker 2: like with their win. Yeah, there yesterday in the World
- 2:38Speaker 2: Cup final. So Danny Jackson, Brad Evans are gonna join
- 2:41Speaker 2: us for I'm gonna see if I can bend their
- 2:43Speaker 2: ear for two segments. We'll see. But they're on their
- 2:45Speaker 2: way in now, and we're gonna do a little in
- 2:47Speaker 2: studio roundtable at the end of soccer. We'll kind of
- 2:50Speaker 2: have a bigger conversation too of what this might have
- 2:52Speaker 2: done for soccer in the United States, the World Cup overall.
- 2:55Speaker 2: And then also ty Dane Gonzalez one of my absolute favorites.
- 2:58Speaker 2: He's the host of the Mariners Locked On podcast. Locked
- 3:01Speaker 2: On Mariners. Ti Daingzol is one of my absolute favorites
- 3:04Speaker 2: covering this team. He's gonna join us at eleven o'clock
- 3:07Speaker 2: and talk about the Mariners. We'll get to your talkbacks
- 3:09Speaker 2: and texts. We got the Tacoma Dodge text line four
- 3:12Speaker 2: nine four five one. Hit me up, hit Jess up.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Whatever you want to talk about, whether it is the
- 3:17Speaker 2: Mariners who I mean, my gosh, we'll start on that
- 3:20Speaker 2: in a minute. But what a moment. I think that
- 3:22Speaker 2: turned the whole weekend around, and then the World Cup
- 3:25Speaker 2: you know, did for you out there listening? Did your
- 3:29Speaker 2: interest in soccer rise at all from the last month
- 3:33Speaker 2: and a half, Because I mean, it's it's nice to
- 3:35Speaker 2: say going in, Yeah, I'm gonna care about the World
- 3:38Speaker 2: Cup for the next two months. But I think one
- 3:40Speaker 2: of the big questions for me, Jess is how much
- 3:43Speaker 2: is soccer actually going to grow in this country moving forward?
- 3:47Speaker 2: Does it put an extra two thousand and three thousand
- 3:50Speaker 2: butts in the seats at Loominfield for Sounders games, or
- 3:52Speaker 2: for Columbus Crew games, or for Orlando City games. You know,
- 3:56Speaker 2: that's the thing that I really want to know is
- 3:58Speaker 2: the casuals out there, will they actually attend more, will
- 4:02Speaker 2: they actually watch more? And We probably won't know that
- 4:05Speaker 2: answer for another six months.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Right exactly. And you look at it and I think
- 4:10Speaker 3: it will.
- 4:10Speaker 4: You had mentioned it when you were on with Chuck
- 4:13Speaker 4: that you'll see kind of an immediate hopefully. And you know,
- 4:17Speaker 4: I don't know their marketing team all that well, but
- 4:20Speaker 4: I hope that they're marketing to that growth right now.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Take some information that you learn for this season after
- 4:27Speaker 4: the World Cup, and then continue to do those things,
- 4:31Speaker 4: you know, not take it for granted.
- 4:33Speaker 3: I guess as what I mean.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think I wish that MLS had done
- 4:37Speaker 2: a lot more advertising during the World Cup. I mean
- 4:40Speaker 2: as you're watching World Cup games, and maybe I missed
- 4:43Speaker 2: something like if you four nine four or five to
- 4:44Speaker 2: one and hit the talkbacks iHeartRadio app, press that little
- 4:47Speaker 2: red button and you can send us a talkback. We'll
- 4:49Speaker 2: get to that at eleven thirty. Maybe I missed something.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I just didn't see the advertising for MLS for local
- 4:55Speaker 2: Soccer that I would have loved to have seen during
- 4:58Speaker 2: the World Cup, and that would have been the thing
- 5:00Speaker 2: that I think could help catapult this league. They put out,
- 5:03Speaker 2: you know, kind of a nice big push over this
- 5:07Speaker 2: last weekend of you know, thanks world. We'll take it
- 5:09Speaker 2: from here, but I needed more over the course of
- 5:12Speaker 2: the month and a half from MLS. So anyway, I
- 5:14Speaker 2: would love to know if casuals out there are more
- 5:16Speaker 2: interested in the game now. I'm more interested in say,
- 5:19Speaker 2: Sounders are just watching soccer now that the World Cup
- 5:22Speaker 2: is over and we have a champion in Spain.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Yeah, And then I think when it comes to casuals,
- 5:26Speaker 4: you are talking about people who could just have more
- 5:29Speaker 4: interest in watching soccer. Maybe not the MLS, maybe not,
- 5:33Speaker 4: but hey, there's a team in my backyard or and
- 5:36Speaker 4: I think they do a pretty good job. When it
- 5:39Speaker 4: comes to a family friendly environment, I think that soccer
- 5:42Speaker 4: tends to be. I mean, the Sounders are really tremendous,
- 5:44Speaker 4: They're very good at their stadium.
- 5:48Speaker 3: I would just say.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Experience, but yeah, do you make it more family friendly?
- 5:53Speaker 4: Do you have some certain packages we see the Mariners,
- 5:57Speaker 4: do you know really nice promotional nights and things like that,
- 6:02Speaker 4: fireworks nights, you know, things like that.
- 6:03Speaker 2: And there is I think a low I want to
- 6:05Speaker 2: talk Mariners here in a minute, but I will say
- 6:07Speaker 2: there's a lower level to it as well, where you know, yes,
- 6:10Speaker 2: you can you know pay you know, say thirty bucks,
- 6:13Speaker 2: forty bucks, whatever it is to go to a Sounders
- 6:15Speaker 2: game and you know, be there part of the thirty
- 6:17Speaker 2: thousand crowd. There's also lower levels because so many neighborhoods
- 6:20Speaker 2: have their neighborhood soccer teams. I mean, there's what's called
- 6:23Speaker 2: here the USL two League. It's kind of a third
- 6:26Speaker 2: division league in the United States. And there's a team
- 6:29Speaker 2: in Ballard. Ballard actually is playing in the Western Conference
- 6:32Speaker 2: final of USL two, the women's side, Salmon Bay. Salmon
- 6:36Speaker 2: Bay just won the USL Women's Championship. Over the weekend.
- 6:40Speaker 2: They have games over at Inner Bay Stadium. So if
- 6:43Speaker 2: you're in you know, kind of the Ballard Inner Bay neighborhood,
- 6:45Speaker 2: Queen Anne. There's local teams who play right there. West
- 6:48Speaker 2: Seattle Junction's a team, There's Midlakes United on the east side.
- 6:51Speaker 2: There's so many of these different little teams who play
- 6:53Speaker 2: in the area who have what you're talking about, that
- 6:55Speaker 2: family friend friendly environment. So we'll see if that picks
- 6:59Speaker 2: up two of people who you know and say, hey,
- 7:00Speaker 2: ten bucks, I'm gonna just go check out my local team,
- 7:02Speaker 2: because I hope that they also would seem perhaps a
- 7:06Speaker 2: bump from that too, But I don't know if we
- 7:08Speaker 2: find that out for another six months of what the
- 7:10Speaker 2: World Cup may have done. I think that's a larger
- 7:14Speaker 2: conversation to have once we actually kind of see the results.
- 7:17Speaker 2: But hey, just let's spend a few minutes before we
- 7:19Speaker 2: get Danny and Brad in here, and we talk a
- 7:21Speaker 2: lot of World Cup before that. I do want to
- 7:23Speaker 2: talk to Mariners, and I think this weekend can boil
- 7:27Speaker 2: down to one moment. And it's a Saturday game, Mariners
- 7:31Speaker 2: obviously playing this series against the Giants, taking two out
- 7:34Speaker 2: of three. They're down three nothing to the Giants on Saturday,
- 7:38Speaker 2: and they had had a stretch where they had had
- 7:41Speaker 2: seven base runners in fourteen innings. Now it's seven base
- 7:45Speaker 2: runners in fourteen innings. Horrific, just I mean, makes you
- 7:49Speaker 2: want to just fall over and go to sleep. Yeah,
- 7:52Speaker 2: and suddenly you get two men on Cole Young, three
- 7:56Speaker 2: run bomb, three to three game, you win at four
- 7:58Speaker 2: to three or often running and Julio has the walk off,
- 8:01Speaker 2: of course, and I think then you trace that into
- 8:05Speaker 2: Sunday where you have another comeback Luke Rayley and then
- 8:08Speaker 2: Cole Young again another two run shot. What a weekend
- 8:11Speaker 2: he had? And for me, this is one of those
- 8:14Speaker 2: moments where all, right, Mariners, what are you gonna do
- 8:17Speaker 2: about it? Kind of like the soccer question, well, couples, great,
- 8:20Speaker 2: what are you gonna do about it? MLS Mariners, what
- 8:24Speaker 2: are you gonna do about it? Because it's one of
- 8:26Speaker 2: those moments you can look back to if they now
- 8:29Speaker 2: go on a run. Dick Fane always talks on the
- 8:31Speaker 2: Afternoon Show about these summer Mariner runs, and they are
- 8:35Speaker 2: famous for having these insane streaks of you know, whether
- 8:38Speaker 2: we know, fourteen straight wins or you could win, you know,
- 8:41Speaker 2: seventeen and nineteen. We've been accustomed to this now for
- 8:44Speaker 2: a few years, and this kind of feels like one
- 8:47Speaker 2: of those weekends, Jess, where they can now ride against
- 8:50Speaker 2: a Reds team this week where you know, game tonight
- 8:53Speaker 2: at tim Opark or sorry is it I think it is?
- 8:57Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 8:57Speaker 2: So they have they have yeah, So they have these
- 8:59Speaker 2: games coming up TEAMO will Park six. I was wondering
- 9:02Speaker 2: if they were the seven ten games. They're still six forty.
- 9:05Speaker 2: So you need to take care of the Reds this
- 9:09Speaker 2: series because the Reds right now are bottom of the
- 9:13Speaker 2: NL Central. They're pretty decently bow of five hundred. You
- 9:17Speaker 2: got probable pitchers coming up of George Kirby, Luis Castillo,
- 9:20Speaker 2: Emerson Hancott going then on Wednesday, and I get your
- 9:24Speaker 2: face in a Chase Burns tomorrow, who's eleven and one
- 9:27Speaker 2: with a two to five VRO. That's gonna be a
- 9:29Speaker 2: tough game. But you gotta win this series and you
- 9:32Speaker 2: gotta build on that weekend's success because if you do
- 9:36Speaker 2: want to, I think, not only take over the Rangers
- 9:39Speaker 2: who lead by a half a game, but if you
- 9:41Speaker 2: do want to, you know, make a statement of no,
- 9:44Speaker 2: we're we're trying to get back on track to win
- 9:47Speaker 2: the AL West, and we're gonna be in position to
- 9:49Speaker 2: make trades, to make a move. I want to ask
- 9:51Speaker 2: Tyd and Dade Gonzalez at eleven o'clock what kind of
- 9:54Speaker 2: move he would make and when when he would make
- 9:57Speaker 2: that move? Over the next ten days, you got to
- 10:00Speaker 2: win this series against the Reds this week, I think
- 10:02Speaker 2: I think it's a requirement for the Mariners to take
- 10:05Speaker 2: to at least two or three from the Reds.
- 10:06Speaker 3: I would agree. I woul one hundred percent agree.
- 10:08Speaker 4: And the thing is we haven't seen them kickstart this
- 10:11Speaker 4: season yet, Like we just haven't.
- 10:13Speaker 3: We sawt earlier in the season last.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Year where they erased a horrific epicet that they had
- 10:20Speaker 4: and you know, go on to great things.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Now.
- 10:22Speaker 4: I'm all good for getting hot at the right time.
- 10:25Speaker 4: I am all in for that. But when it comes
- 10:27Speaker 4: to this, we saw a spark this weekend. We saw
- 10:31Speaker 4: a spark. We saw Julio come off the injured list.
- 10:33Speaker 4: We saw Luke Raley do Luke Raley things. Colt col
- 10:38Speaker 4: Jong keeps doing exactly what he kind of proved he
- 10:42Speaker 4: could do earlier in the season, but we didn't expect
- 10:44Speaker 4: it to be as consistent as it is. So how
- 10:48Speaker 4: do we ride that pitching staff is healthy? We are
- 10:52Speaker 4: going in the right direction. The piggyback, I thought that
- 10:56Speaker 4: they were doing on purpose to save for later in
- 10:59Speaker 4: this and to save fresh arms. So but what you
- 11:04Speaker 4: just said, and it's kind of Angie Mentek, who was
- 11:07Speaker 4: on the tchuck earlier, kind of made this really good
- 11:09Speaker 4: analogy of like, it's like talking to my kids.
- 11:11Speaker 3: You have all the potential to do this.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Yeah, but you know your dirty socks are really close
- 11:16Speaker 4: to the hammer.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Just get them in.
- 11:19Speaker 3: I know you can do it. I know you can
- 11:20Speaker 3: do it.
- 11:20Speaker 4: And that's kind of what she was saying from her
- 11:22Speaker 4: perspective on this team has all the potential in the world,
- 11:26Speaker 4: and when are we actually going to see it consistently
- 11:30Speaker 4: come through.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Because it does feel like you're just wasting this pitching staff.
- 11:33Speaker 3: And how many times have we said that with this.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Team, but I mean, truly, right now, it just it
- 11:39Speaker 2: continues to just get wasted. And yes, right now they're
- 11:42Speaker 2: in the playoff picture. If the playoffs started today, they'd
- 11:44Speaker 2: be the four seed facing the Red Sox, And okay, great, cool, right,
- 11:49Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, you look at
- 11:52Speaker 2: where this thing is going and you say, well, you
- 11:54Speaker 2: need to jump Texas. You need to then kind of
- 11:56Speaker 2: give yourself some space in between Texas. You need to
- 11:58Speaker 2: prove that they're worthy of making I think a big trade.
- 12:02Speaker 2: But the season over the last couple of weeks, I mean,
- 12:05Speaker 2: I come kind of stretching this through the All Star break,
- 12:08Speaker 2: but the team had won five of six games, you know,
- 12:11Speaker 2: finishing that Toronto series, and then you go to Miami,
- 12:15Speaker 2: you lose on a walk off there back on the seventh,
- 12:18Speaker 2: and that's you know, just absolutely snowballs into a five
- 12:21Speaker 2: game losing streak and Suddenly we go from all right,
- 12:24Speaker 2: maybe this is the start, maybe this is the summer
- 12:26Speaker 2: streak five a six, into oh god, oh god, there's
- 12:30Speaker 2: five straight. And now we're back to winning three of four.
- 12:33Speaker 2: So it's one of those things. Well, you know, it's
- 12:35Speaker 2: one of my favorite one of my favorite TV shows,
- 12:38Speaker 2: my favorite TV episodes, the Twilight Zone. Will the real
- 12:41Speaker 2: Martian please stand up? Well, the real Seattle Mariners please
- 12:44Speaker 2: stand up? Is this a team that is going to
- 12:46Speaker 2: make another summer run? Get in contention and stay in contention.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And I don't mean contention for the West. I'm in
- 12:53Speaker 2: contention to win the whole damn American League. Because that
- 12:56Speaker 2: is the conversation that we all thought was going to
- 12:58Speaker 2: happen going in right now. I don't know if anybody
- 13:01Speaker 2: is realistically having the conversation of, yeah, they can win
- 13:05Speaker 2: the American League, we can get to a World Series.
- 13:07Speaker 2: This team has not proven to be good enough to
- 13:09Speaker 2: be in that conversation. But you go in two or
- 13:12Speaker 2: three from the Reds, you go make a trade. Maybe
- 13:14Speaker 2: not it's the level of the two trades last year,
- 13:16Speaker 2: but you go make a offensive addition to the team,
- 13:19Speaker 2: and suddenly maybe that conversation changes, but it really does
- 13:22Speaker 2: all start with this Red series once again. You got
- 13:24Speaker 2: six point forty first pitch tonight, t Mobile Park, George
- 13:28Speaker 2: Kirby on the mound for the MS. All right, well,
- 13:31Speaker 2: we'll get back to ems with ty Dan Gonzalez coming
- 13:34Speaker 2: up at eleven o'clock. But we got Danny Jackson and
- 13:37Speaker 2: Brad Evans in studio. The World Cup is over Spain,
- 13:41Speaker 2: our champions. We're gonna do a little roundtable here in
- 13:44Speaker 2: studio for the next half hour or so. Break down
- 13:47Speaker 2: the World Cup, break down the final yesterday. If you
- 13:50Speaker 2: missed it, we will give you some deep x's and
- 13:52Speaker 2: o's that you can take to your water cooler work
- 13:54Speaker 2: this week. Make you sound smart in the language of soccer.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Got Danny Jackson and Brad Evans instance udio. My name
- 14:00Speaker 2: is Jackson Feltz. I am in for Greg Bell here
- 14:03Speaker 2: today going up until noon on Sports Radio ninety three
- 14:06Speaker 2: point three KJRFM. Welcome back, Welcome back, Jackson Felts in
- 14:27Speaker 2: for Greg Bell today alongside Jessmin McIntyre here going up
- 14:32Speaker 2: until noon when Ian Finness will take over here on
- 14:34Speaker 2: Sports Radio ninety three point three KJRFM. Glad you're joining
- 14:38Speaker 2: us here this morning, we are a day removed from
- 14:41Speaker 2: the World Cup final. Yesterday we had it for you
- 14:44Speaker 2: right here on KJR. It is Spain with your World
- 14:48Speaker 2: Cup champions, beating Argentina by a score of one to
- 14:51Speaker 2: nothing and joining me here in studio, back into studio
- 14:55Speaker 2: a day after they joined us. So glad that these
- 14:57Speaker 2: guys could pop back in for a for a segment
- 15:00Speaker 2: or two. Danny Jackson, the voice of the Sounders here
- 15:04Speaker 2: on KJR and the Sounders legend Brad Evans, gentlemen, thanks
- 15:08Speaker 2: for coming back in today.
- 15:10Speaker 7: It's good to be a whirlwind of events.
- 15:15Speaker 2: I imagine it's been a whirlwind last month and a
- 15:17Speaker 2: half for sure, Danny. Let's because it's been so many
- 15:21Speaker 2: broadcasts and you're nearly fifty with you guys here on
- 15:24Speaker 2: iHeart and KJR. So thank you so much for all
- 15:27Speaker 2: the time and this right here. Let's let's wrap this
- 15:31Speaker 2: thing up and let's talk about yesterday's game is where
- 15:34Speaker 2: I want to start here. Spain won nothing over Argentina. Danny.
- 15:38Speaker 2: It took one hundred and six minutes for this game
- 15:40Speaker 2: to find a goal, but Spain finally found one. What
- 15:43Speaker 2: do you make of yesterday's final?
- 15:44Speaker 8: I think it was inevitable that it was going to
- 15:46Speaker 8: happen at some point the manner in which the game
- 15:48Speaker 8: was playing now Argentina didn't have a short and goal
- 15:51Speaker 8: to the final minutes of the game. Messy was extremely quiet,
- 15:54Speaker 8: all to do with the way that Spain played through
- 15:57Speaker 8: Rawdery dictated the pace of the play through the middle
- 15:59Speaker 8: of the and of course, when you have eleven players
- 16:02Speaker 8: who can defend eleven players.
- 16:03Speaker 6: Who want the ball from each other.
- 16:05Speaker 8: It's a very difficult beast to beat. And Spain were
- 16:09Speaker 8: the defensively best team in the tournament. Offensively, they were
- 16:12Speaker 8: extremely efficient and they were patient.
- 16:15Speaker 6: What Argentina have shown over.
- 16:18Speaker 8: The course of the Knock it Around especially is a
- 16:20Speaker 8: level of resilience and mentality and patients. Well, Spain had
- 16:23Speaker 8: it in a slightly different way. They were just able
- 16:25Speaker 8: to prod and poke and eventually it broke through coming
- 16:29Speaker 8: out of that break in the extra time. But at
- 16:32Speaker 8: the end of the day, the best team won. I
- 16:34Speaker 8: think Spain proved themselves. They smothered friends in the semifinals
- 16:37Speaker 8: who buy all accounts where everyone's favorites, and they came
- 16:40Speaker 8: into this final. I think we expect the final to
- 16:42Speaker 8: go the way, it was maybe not quite as one
- 16:44Speaker 8: sided for as long as it was. Sometimes in these games,
- 16:47Speaker 8: you get these ebbs and flows where you can dominate
- 16:49Speaker 8: a game, but inevitably the other team, especially as good
- 16:52Speaker 8: as Argentina, you're gonna get something from the other team
- 16:55Speaker 8: and you're gonna have to withstand that pressure and then
- 16:57Speaker 8: get back on top of the game.
- 16:58Speaker 6: That flow didn't happen.
- 17:00Speaker 8: Alvarez didn't get a chance to really get is in
- 17:02Speaker 8: behind and really trouble Simon in any specific way, and
- 17:06Speaker 8: the end of the day was desperation. The final minutes
- 17:09Speaker 8: for Augina managed to get a couple of off chances,
- 17:11Speaker 8: but it was too little, too late, And I think
- 17:13Speaker 8: that yellow cart at the end of the regulation time
- 17:16Speaker 8: from Fernandez was a real punch in the gut.
- 17:18Speaker 7: I think for Argentina, if you go back to twenty
- 17:21Speaker 7: twenty two, they were kind of living on a tight
- 17:23Speaker 7: rope there in that tournament as well, and somehow I
- 17:26Speaker 7: think they just ultimately used up all nine lives and
- 17:29Speaker 7: it just wasn't It just wasn't meant to be today,
- 17:31Speaker 7: and I just I can't watch MESSI after the game crying,
- 17:35Speaker 7: and then I watched the game and you hear stats
- 17:38Speaker 7: that you know only only walk sixty five percent of
- 17:42Speaker 7: the time. Well, why wouldn't you just put more into
- 17:46Speaker 7: the game in the first ninety minutes before the red card.
- 17:48Speaker 7: I understand, after the red card, you're gonna sit, You're
- 17:50Speaker 7: gonna play a four four one, You're gonna sit up
- 17:52Speaker 7: top by yourself. But if you're that upset, that distraught,
- 17:55Speaker 7: then rip a muscle off the bone. I don't care.
- 17:58Speaker 7: I guess some of a have a different mentality. Obviously,
- 18:01Speaker 7: we're watching it from outside saying we would love to
- 18:03Speaker 7: be in that situation, but your game plan has to
- 18:06Speaker 7: switch at some point when all the knockout rounds seem
- 18:10Speaker 7: to have gone into extra rounds. Is what it felt
- 18:12Speaker 7: like for them, scoring so many goals so late, having
- 18:14Speaker 7: him put so much energy. I just imagine a world
- 18:18Speaker 7: where he's such a great player and has the ability
- 18:20Speaker 7: to turn it on. But if there were forty five
- 18:22Speaker 7: minutes to turn it on for the entire forty five minutes,
- 18:25Speaker 7: what that would have done to his teammates around him,
- 18:28Speaker 7: so that they didn't feel like they had to do
- 18:31Speaker 7: so much off the ball to get him the ball?
- 18:34Speaker 2: Does that make sense? Yeah, no, it does. And I
- 18:35Speaker 2: think in the context of greatest of all time, I
- 18:38Speaker 2: think we can all agree Messi's number one. But it's
- 18:40Speaker 2: these sorts of things that make you go God. But
- 18:45Speaker 2: you know, he could be number one with a mile
- 18:48Speaker 2: from number two, you know, and maybe it is that. Ever,
- 18:51Speaker 2: I don't know, Danny, if it changes anything in the
- 18:54Speaker 2: you know, historical perspective of Lionel Messi that he loses
- 18:59Speaker 2: what might be? I mean, I don't know. I think
- 19:00Speaker 2: that there's maybe a slim, slim shot that he comes
- 19:03Speaker 2: back to finish his final World Cup in the stadium
- 19:06Speaker 2: where it started at all in Barcelona. Maybe this is
- 19:09Speaker 2: it and if this is it, his final world call,
- 19:12Speaker 2: his final World Cup ends with that.
- 19:15Speaker 8: But also you think it's eight goals for assists for
- 19:18Speaker 8: a thirty nine year old, and.
- 19:19Speaker 6: It's pretty remarkable.
- 19:21Speaker 8: I mean, he pulled a game out that had several
- 19:24Speaker 8: different times in the knockout rounds where he just grabbed
- 19:27Speaker 8: the game by the scruffnick and did it. Argentina relied
- 19:31Speaker 8: on some special moments from some special players. They relied
- 19:34Speaker 8: on teams like England the semifinals kind of leaning back
- 19:38Speaker 8: on their heels. They took that opportunity to push forward
- 19:42Speaker 8: and eventually they broke through. But I think Brad's absolutely right.
- 19:45Speaker 8: Even in the twenty two World Cup and Serill in
- 19:47Speaker 8: this one, I mean Cape Verdi. They could have lost
- 19:50Speaker 8: that game and then they pushed through against Egypt to
- 19:53Speaker 8: nil down win three to two. England really should have
- 19:56Speaker 8: put one over them, going one mill up. They got
- 19:58Speaker 8: that back. That's incredible resilience, incredible mentality. But we talked
- 20:02Speaker 8: about it. Messi has been given this role of winning
- 20:06Speaker 8: games at the appropriate time, and he's patient enough to
- 20:08Speaker 8: do that. The game just didn't turn in his favor
- 20:11Speaker 8: to allow him to get that momentum and find the
- 20:14Speaker 8: ball in the right pockets of space.
- 20:15Speaker 7: And that's because of what did they did, not what
- 20:19Speaker 7: England did. England gave him the game. They said, here,
- 20:22Speaker 7: what are you going to do with the ball? Make
- 20:24Speaker 7: us look silly Spain, Like we said, if they go
- 20:27Speaker 7: up one nothing and throughout the whole game they were
- 20:29Speaker 7: just going to keep the ball, and they did seventy
- 20:31Speaker 7: percent of the time they had the ball. And if
- 20:32Speaker 7: you keep the ball seventy percent of the time, and
- 20:34Speaker 7: Messi only has had a few off chances, and then
- 20:36Speaker 7: you have Rod reed to pretty much shut him down,
- 20:39Speaker 7: and their defense proved why they were so good and
- 20:43Speaker 7: why they were only able to allow one goal in
- 20:46Speaker 7: the entire tournament.
- 20:47Speaker 8: And I think, but I think, if you take a
- 20:49Speaker 8: step back and you let the dust settle, Messi at
- 20:51Speaker 8: thirty nine.
- 20:52Speaker 6: Had an incredible tournament. Yes, if it wasn't for him,
- 20:55Speaker 6: who knows.
- 20:55Speaker 8: If you play with eleven players like Madrid on both
- 20:58Speaker 8: sides sorry of Spain sides of the ball, if you
- 21:00Speaker 8: have a slightly different outcome, it certainly would go a
- 21:03Speaker 8: certain different way in terms of the way the games
- 21:05Speaker 8: play out.
- 21:06Speaker 6: But I think Messi.
- 21:07Speaker 8: Without Messi, I think Argentina at a quarter final team,
- 21:10Speaker 8: probably at best. So you know, you think about how
- 21:12Speaker 8: he elevates that team. He won them a World Cup.
- 21:14Speaker 8: He got out from the shadow of Maradonna with that
- 21:17Speaker 8: World Cup win. So he's been in three World Cup finals,
- 21:20Speaker 8: lost to one one. He's won two Copra Americas. Now,
- 21:23Speaker 8: so you think under sclone when Scloni took over in
- 21:25Speaker 8: twenty eighteen, Argentina would try to find their way again,
- 21:29Speaker 8: not just under illegal Messi, who was the best player
- 21:31Speaker 8: in the world potentially at that time already, but who
- 21:34Speaker 8: were they going to be and Sclone basically leaned into
- 21:37Speaker 8: Messi and said, hey, you are our man. We're going
- 21:39Speaker 8: to build a team around you. We're going to lean
- 21:41Speaker 8: on the other players to add five to ten percent
- 21:43Speaker 8: of additional capacity in their defensive side.
- 21:45Speaker 6: You saw that in World Cup.
- 21:46Speaker 8: They were on their hands and knees after every single game.
- 21:49Speaker 8: It's just one game too many. Maybe, and maybe if
- 21:52Speaker 8: you had a tournament with thirty two teams and you
- 21:54Speaker 8: had one less game, maybe that would have been the way.
- 21:58Speaker 6: It worked out slightly better.
- 21:59Speaker 8: But when you add the extra game and the extra
- 22:01Speaker 8: pressure at some point, with the heat and the intensity
- 22:04Speaker 8: and the pressure and the anxiety, at some point it
- 22:07Speaker 8: just wears on you. But I don't think you could
- 22:09Speaker 8: look at anything other than Messi this being a fantastically
- 22:12Speaker 8: successful World Cup for him, for this team. I think
- 22:15Speaker 8: Argentina were the upp echelon of teams where the expectations
- 22:18Speaker 8: could they win it?
- 22:19Speaker 6: But realistically it landed.
- 22:21Speaker 8: On the shoulder of one individual to get them through
- 22:23Speaker 8: certain games. But again I look at this from the
- 22:26Speaker 8: standpoint of his career that he is number one, there's
- 22:29Speaker 8: no question about it.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Yeah, no question at all. And you mentioned the extra
- 22:33Speaker 2: game and the extra pressure. It's kind of the topic
- 22:36Speaker 2: of my last game question talking about Spain. By the way,
- 22:39Speaker 2: we're doing a little bit of a World Cup roundtable
- 22:41Speaker 2: the day after the final. I'm Jackson Feltz. I have
- 22:44Speaker 2: Danny Jackson brad Evans here in studio here on KJR
- 22:48Speaker 2: to break down the World Cup final yesterday and this
- 22:50Speaker 2: entire tournament that we'll get to. But wrapping it with Spain, Danny,
- 22:55Speaker 2: you mentioned the extra pressure of the extra game. So
- 22:58Speaker 2: Spain set the record for most clean sheets in a
- 23:00Speaker 2: World Cup by two, I believe, record for least goals
- 23:04Speaker 2: given up during an entire tournament. The record was previously
- 23:07Speaker 2: two set by Spain in twenty ten. Now the record
- 23:11Speaker 2: is one set by Spain in twenty twenty six. You know,
- 23:14Speaker 2: when we look at the historical context of how Spain
- 23:18Speaker 2: in this Spanish twenty twenty six team will be remembered,
- 23:20Speaker 2: I mean, we're coming out of a Seahawks Super Bowl
- 23:23Speaker 2: title year where the dark side everybody around the nation
- 23:27Speaker 2: knows Seahawks defense, and they are remembered and will always
- 23:31Speaker 2: be remembered for the defense. Frankly for both Super Bowls.
- 23:34Speaker 2: But talking about this last one and now Spain, it seems,
- 23:38Speaker 2: will get kind of that same note being remembered for
- 23:41Speaker 2: their defensive performances.
- 23:43Speaker 8: I agree defense wins championships, no question about. You have
- 23:46Speaker 8: to have a strong foundation. But what they do so
- 23:47Speaker 8: well as both sides of the ball, they defend with eleven.
- 23:50Speaker 8: They swarm the ball when they lose it, and then
- 23:52Speaker 8: they play quickly through that that defense and when they
- 23:55Speaker 8: win the ball, they break the line and they go
- 23:57Speaker 8: forward in numbers as well, they're a collective unit both
- 24:00Speaker 8: sides of the ball. They're efficient, they have belief, they
- 24:02Speaker 8: have trust in what the coach is doing. As a
- 24:05Speaker 8: coach has been through the youth national team ranks, has
- 24:07Speaker 8: built a system as Spain have been built on since
- 24:10Speaker 8: that twenty ten team, where as mentioned before, was a
- 24:13Speaker 8: tig taket play but with a purpose and they managed
- 24:16Speaker 8: to find a way to get it done.
- 24:18Speaker 6: But when you think about Spain in the.
- 24:20Speaker 8: Context of this World Cup as well, is potentially have
- 24:23Speaker 8: a better goalkeeper on the bench in Riyah for Arsenal
- 24:27Speaker 8: Whune Simon had a fantastic World Cup one goal conceded.
- 24:30Speaker 8: They potentially had one of the best defenders in this tournament,
- 24:33Speaker 8: Laporte playing alongside Kubasu, who won the Young Player of
- 24:36Speaker 8: the Tournament, two defensive anchors. Then you have probably the
- 24:39Speaker 8: best central midfield player in the world in Rogery in
- 24:41Speaker 8: front of that triangle with the goalkeeper in behind was
- 24:44Speaker 8: really a place where they could start defensively. But it
- 24:47Speaker 8: wasn't the eleven best players to get on the team.
- 24:50Speaker 8: It was the eleven best players for a system to
- 24:53Speaker 8: be on the field. And then we always talk about
- 24:56Speaker 8: a team in the World Cup often leans at about
- 24:58Speaker 8: fifteen or sixteen players. Those four or five players that
- 25:01Speaker 8: came off the bench did incredibly well. Marino scored two
- 25:03Speaker 8: goals off the bench to win games, Torres off the
- 25:06Speaker 8: bench scored from an assist by Williams off the bench.
- 25:09Speaker 8: So and Pedri, of course, from the best centry midfield
- 25:12Speaker 8: players for Barcelona, didn't even get a sniff because Ruiz
- 25:15Speaker 8: for PSG was playing so well alongside Roder.
- 25:17Speaker 7: But that's a great shout in a group of collective
- 25:21Speaker 7: players able to do their role for the collective. Greater
- 25:24Speaker 7: good for a guy like Pedri in his stature, he
- 25:27Speaker 7: could have easily said I don't even want to go,
- 25:30Speaker 7: I don't really want to play, but there's something within
- 25:33Speaker 7: this group where if you buy in, you're gonna win,
- 25:36Speaker 7: and if you want to be amongst a group of winners,
- 25:38Speaker 7: you can do it. I love that they do it
- 25:39Speaker 7: without a real superstar. They have a potential superstar, but
- 25:43Speaker 7: they don't have a real superstar.
- 25:45Speaker 6: And I think for Spain.
- 25:46Speaker 7: There this will go down as it has to go
- 25:51Speaker 7: down as one of the most successful World Cups for
- 25:53Speaker 7: any country just based on goals against. I mean, that's
- 25:57Speaker 7: when you hang your hat on something. Yes, they ask
- 26:01Speaker 7: how many you've won, but at the second question is
- 26:03Speaker 7: how you did it? And this one will go down
- 26:05Speaker 7: once again is as another amazing tournament for Spain, and
- 26:10Speaker 7: it just is a surprise that in between now and
- 26:13Speaker 7: twenty ten to twenty twenty six, what happened in the
- 26:16Speaker 7: other World Cups that didn't allow them just to get
- 26:18Speaker 7: to that next level like they've shown that they can.
- 26:21Speaker 6: I think it's fascinating.
- 26:22Speaker 8: I think every country and every team in an support
- 26:25Speaker 8: has a certain, you know character in which you would
- 26:28Speaker 8: imagine them to be right and you know, defensively, it
- 26:32Speaker 8: could be in England or Argentina. For Spain's about possession
- 26:35Speaker 8: right going forward in the attack, middle third of the field,
- 26:37Speaker 8: especially how they play the ball around and how they
- 26:39Speaker 8: advance almost in a unit. But you're right, like defensively,
- 26:43Speaker 8: you wouldn't say this is a defensive stalwart of a
- 26:45Speaker 8: team in world soccer. But the manner in which they defend,
- 26:49Speaker 8: not just with the ball, because it's you can't beat
- 26:51Speaker 8: a team if you don't have it, but the fact
- 26:53Speaker 8: that they do swarm around the ball and win the
- 26:56Speaker 8: ball as a unit and then break through it. And
- 26:58Speaker 8: I give this example in pregame yesterday. Baina, who's that left.
- 27:02Speaker 6: Sided player, not a big superstar, but.
- 27:04Speaker 8: I remember in a game I think it was against
- 27:05Speaker 8: France where he got knocked down in the attacking half
- 27:07Speaker 8: of the field should have been a free kick. He
- 27:09Speaker 8: didn't sit on the ground and complain. He jumped up,
- 27:12Speaker 8: sprinted back thirty yards, helped his team win the ball
- 27:14Speaker 8: back and off they went again. That's demoralizing for the
- 27:17Speaker 8: other team if you're looking at these players just won't
- 27:20Speaker 8: give up defensively or offensively.
- 27:22Speaker 7: At some point you lose a little bit of belief.
- 27:24Speaker 7: But they and they did that yesterday as well. Every
- 27:27Speaker 7: foul Argentina tried to do what Argentina did, and that
- 27:30Speaker 7: was a disrupt play. They did it really well in
- 27:32Speaker 7: the first fifteen to twenty minutes against England and it
- 27:35Speaker 7: did it shifted things for England just a little bit,
- 27:37Speaker 7: and then all of a sudden yesterday against Spain, they tried,
- 27:41Speaker 7: they were trying to be but Spain rode through the challenge.
- 27:44Speaker 7: There was a little bit of antics after the game,
- 27:47Speaker 7: but during the game there wasn't too much to be
- 27:49Speaker 7: had there. And I think they have a very professional coach.
- 27:53Speaker 7: When he says something, the players listen, and that's just
- 27:57Speaker 7: all about respect at the end of the day.
- 27:59Speaker 5: You know.
- 27:59Speaker 8: Paradus I think was one of the players that go
- 28:01Speaker 8: in some scuffles at the end of the game and
- 28:02Speaker 8: I think that was a good change actually half time
- 28:04Speaker 8: for him to come and he didn't start the game,
- 28:06Speaker 8: but he he did allow certain players in Argentina and
- 28:09Speaker 8: like Fernandez and Mcallis and Depault to play a little
- 28:11Speaker 8: higher in the second half and it worked a little better.
- 28:13Speaker 8: But his comment joined the World Cup was, you know,
- 28:16Speaker 8: it is our role as a team to make sure
- 28:18Speaker 8: this is not the last game for Messi.
- 28:20Speaker 6: Spain's the complete opposite.
- 28:21Speaker 8: Right, there's a true focus that works for the Argentinian team,
- 28:25Speaker 8: no question about it. And you have a superstar that
- 28:27Speaker 8: can win games for you or proven, but Spain don't
- 28:30Speaker 8: look and say, hey, we're winning this game. So it's
- 28:32Speaker 8: not your mold's last game in this World Cup. It
- 28:34Speaker 8: is about each other and I think it's a very
- 28:36Speaker 8: different mentality and it worked for them in this tournament.
- 28:38Speaker 2: That's the voice of Danny Jackson. He's the voice of
- 28:40Speaker 2: the Seattle Sounders here on KJR. Also have Brad Evans
- 28:43Speaker 2: in the sounder legend here. My name is Jackson Felt
- 28:46Speaker 2: sitting in for Greg Bell here today from ten to
- 28:48Speaker 2: twelve here on KGr. Thanks so much for joining us.
- 28:52Speaker 2: We have a few minutes and I want to talk
- 28:54Speaker 2: to you about the World Cup overall, how we look
- 28:56Speaker 2: back at this whole tournament, and especially here the six
- 28:59Speaker 2: games here in stead Seattle. Brad mentioned England. Danny, I'd
- 29:03Speaker 2: be remissed if I didn't ask you how you're doing, buddy.
- 29:06Speaker 6: You know, I mean morning.
- 29:07Speaker 8: My wife Brianne looked at me after the England game
- 29:10Speaker 8: when we lost to Argentina, and she just saw like
- 29:13Speaker 8: this kind of vacant look in my face, and I
- 29:15Speaker 8: was like, you know, it look like how dog had
- 29:17Speaker 8: died or something.
- 29:17Speaker 6: I mean, it just it was very sad.
- 29:19Speaker 8: England have always been on the precipice of getting to
- 29:22Speaker 8: that final step to win a big tournament. They've made
- 29:25Speaker 8: finals and semi finals over the last ten years.
- 29:28Speaker 6: Wasn't to be.
- 29:28Speaker 8: I think England were at fault. You can blame the
- 29:31Speaker 8: coach for certain tactics and substitutions in Tukel and he'll
- 29:34Speaker 8: be analyzed till the Cows come home over the coming
- 29:37Speaker 8: weeks and months.
- 29:38Speaker 6: At the end of the day was the mentality to players.
- 29:40Speaker 8: They scored in the fifty fifth minute and instead of
- 29:42Speaker 8: pressing forward, which again Brad and I have talked about
- 29:45Speaker 8: Spain do that they get ahead, agains its friends and
- 29:47Speaker 8: they keep going and keep going, don't change the way
- 29:49Speaker 8: they're doing, and that takes away the belief from a
- 29:51Speaker 8: team to come back. England cracked open that door for
- 29:55Speaker 8: Argentina and they took it because of the experience and
- 29:57Speaker 8: the desire that they have. But you know England, when
- 30:00Speaker 8: it's that third fourth place game and you have to
- 30:02Speaker 8: be proud, it's again nobody wants to play in.
- 30:04Speaker 6: It was against France, so it's a big.
- 30:06Speaker 8: Arch rival Anyhow, it's a fantastic game all the semi finals,
- 30:09Speaker 8: in the third fourth place game and the final or
- 30:11Speaker 8: could have been very worthy finals. That was the four
- 30:14Speaker 8: best teams in the World Cup, in the world to
- 30:16Speaker 8: play in the last four. So England scored six against
- 30:21Speaker 8: France made it a little bit more difficult than it
- 30:22Speaker 8: should have been that second half, and France came through
- 30:25Speaker 8: and scored four. But that was a great way to
- 30:28Speaker 8: finish the World Cup as kind of a curtain race
- 30:30Speaker 8: to the final. Because the final wasn't a classic, the
- 30:33Speaker 8: third fourth place game was. I think it's a little
- 30:37Speaker 8: bit like the US and their performance. There was such
- 30:39Speaker 8: high expectations, probably more on this group of US players
- 30:42Speaker 8: than there ever has been specifically because we're hosting and
- 30:47Speaker 8: now we seem to have this great base of youth
- 30:49Speaker 8: talent that's playing all throughout the world, and the expectation
- 30:52Speaker 8: just wasn't met.
- 30:53Speaker 2: For the US.
- 30:54Speaker 7: I think England they checked a box of we are okay,
- 30:59Speaker 7: We're okay in this moment with that result.
- 31:01Speaker 2: But for US, I think with the US, we.
- 31:06Speaker 6: It was a.
- 31:07Speaker 7: Disappointing World Cup overall. I mean, there were a couple
- 31:10Speaker 7: good moments, but in terms of how I thought it
- 31:14Speaker 7: would play out for the US. I thought there was
- 31:16Speaker 7: really a good chance that they would make the quarterfinal.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Yeah, actually, let's quickly stop. I'm going to take a
- 31:23Speaker 2: quick early break and we'll come back and we'll wrap
- 31:25Speaker 2: things up for the tournament and the United States there,
- 31:28Speaker 2: because I think that's where a lot of brains at,
- 31:30Speaker 2: especially here in Seattle, is well, how do we look
- 31:32Speaker 2: back at the United States after blowing it against Belgium
- 31:36Speaker 2: here in our building a couple of weeks ago. So
- 31:38Speaker 2: I got Brad Evans, I got Danny Jackson. My name
- 31:41Speaker 2: is Jackson Feltz in for Greg Bell. We got one
- 31:43Speaker 2: more very quick segment here as we wrap World Cup
- 31:46Speaker 2: twenty twenty six. It's been a lot of fun here
- 31:49Speaker 2: at KJR on iHeartRadio across the country over the last
- 31:52Speaker 2: couple of months. We'll continue wrapping the tournament and then
- 31:55Speaker 2: we'll turn to some baseball. I got ty Dane Gonzalez
- 31:58Speaker 2: talking to Mariners coming up at eleven am. Coming up
- 32:01Speaker 2: here just around the corner. So stay tuned to US
- 32:04Speaker 2: Sports Radio ninety three point three KJR FM. Welcome back, everybody.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Jackson Felds here in for Greg Bell. This morning Sports
- 32:21Speaker 2: Radio ninety three point three KJRFM. Thanks for joining us
- 32:24Speaker 2: here in studio for a little World Cup wrap up show.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Here a mini roundtable here in studio with the guys
- 32:31Speaker 2: who joined me yesterday in studio. Thankfully that they could
- 32:34Speaker 2: come back in and pop through the doors for a
- 32:37Speaker 2: second straight day. It's been many many days here in
- 32:39Speaker 2: this building for them over the last couple months. Brad Evans,
- 32:43Speaker 2: the Sounders legend, Danny Jackson, the Sounders voice here, the
- 32:46Speaker 2: play by play voice on KJR for the games. We
- 32:50Speaker 2: left that last segment and Brad, you talked about the
- 32:52Speaker 2: United States men's national team. Guys, I do want to
- 32:55Speaker 2: wrap things for the United States. Danny was such a
- 32:58Speaker 2: disappointing ending for them. Me, you and Anders were on
- 33:02Speaker 2: that broadcast down from Jimmy's on first where the team lost,
- 33:06Speaker 2: just got blown out by Belgium. And I think the
- 33:11Speaker 2: big question is where does the United States go from
- 33:14Speaker 2: here after that really disappointing end.
- 33:17Speaker 6: I think, and Brad could probably have a comment.
- 33:20Speaker 8: When I looked forward into the World Cup, what was
- 33:22Speaker 8: the expectation.
- 33:23Speaker 6: Of the US.
- 33:23Speaker 8: Maybe it was round of sixteen, but I think at
- 33:26Speaker 8: that first game when we beat Paraguay convincingly. I think
- 33:29Speaker 8: it changed people's mentality and they kept that going throughout
- 33:31Speaker 8: the group stage. Turkey was a different type of game,
- 33:34Speaker 8: many different changes, but they took care of business against
- 33:36Speaker 8: Australian and against.
- 33:37Speaker 6: Bosnia as well.
- 33:39Speaker 8: And I think what the most disappointing thing about that
- 33:41Speaker 8: was is that there may have been an expectation to
- 33:43Speaker 8: get to.
- 33:44Speaker 6: The round of eight.
- 33:45Speaker 8: Obviously it's the first time you got there since two
- 33:46Speaker 8: thousand and two in the manner in which they played
- 33:48Speaker 8: in earlier games. Unfortunately, it was the worst time to
- 33:51Speaker 8: have the worst game you could possibly play. Too many
- 33:53Speaker 8: players made individual mistakes, they never played in their front foot.
- 33:56Speaker 8: The flow Balligan situation was noise and a distraction. Think
- 34:00Speaker 8: it had to be for him individually and as the
- 34:02Speaker 8: team and the team in totality, and I think there
- 34:06Speaker 8: was so much expectation from the crowd, so much expectation
- 34:10Speaker 8: from the general public, and the players just couldn't stand
- 34:13Speaker 8: up to it. My comment was is that what the
- 34:15Speaker 8: US need to do, I think moving forward is those
- 34:18Speaker 8: players need to be marquee leaders on their respective club teams,
- 34:23Speaker 8: where other players around them lean into a Tyler Adams
- 34:26Speaker 8: lean into a Chris Richards to get them over the
- 34:29Speaker 8: line at the domestic level, because they are most likely
- 34:32Speaker 8: players now that lean lean on others and when the
- 34:34Speaker 8: pressure comes on, you needed somebody in the middle of
- 34:36Speaker 8: that park to grab that game by the scruff and
- 34:39Speaker 8: demand certain things from certain players at least just run
- 34:42Speaker 8: and give it something. And I think they were all
- 34:44Speaker 8: looking at each other for some kind of inspiration and
- 34:46Speaker 8: it wasn't there. I think that's where the US team
- 34:48Speaker 8: need to go because I think if they can get
- 34:50Speaker 8: that from the individual to bring into camp and on
- 34:52Speaker 8: the field, that will help them get over the hunt.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:55Speaker 7: I got to talk with Christian Rodon a little bit
- 34:57Speaker 7: about that situation. I asked, and what was it like
- 34:59Speaker 7: at halftime and he said, look, guys were yelling at
- 35:01Speaker 7: each other. It was feisty inside the locker room. Well,
- 35:04Speaker 7: the question is why not on the field. Why not
- 35:06Speaker 7: show the fans something to get into a tackle, anything,
- 35:10Speaker 7: fight for a header, show us something that you care.
- 35:12Speaker 7: But he's spot on. If you don't have players. We
- 35:15Speaker 7: have players that are playing at very good teams and
- 35:17Speaker 7: training on a regular basis with very good players, But
- 35:20Speaker 7: until you're the man at the team you're always going
- 35:23Speaker 7: to get these results. None of you have the top
- 35:26Speaker 7: four teams in the world FIFA rankings playing in the
- 35:28Speaker 7: semi finals for a reason. It's because every player stepped
- 35:31Speaker 7: up on a weekly basis. They're leaders in every respective team,
- 35:34Speaker 7: most of them, and the US doesn't really have that.
- 35:37Speaker 7: I mean, Tim Reem is probably the closest one to it,
- 35:39Speaker 7: and he's kind of probably on his way out and
- 35:42Speaker 7: he's not a world class player by any means. But
- 35:45Speaker 7: when you look around the world, that's what it's gonna take.
- 35:47Speaker 7: It's a great point and a great take that all
- 35:50Speaker 7: these guys you at least need four or five to
- 35:53Speaker 7: be the guy. And look, it's still a young team
- 35:56Speaker 7: at the end of the day. They have the opportunity
- 35:58Speaker 7: to still gain that experience and hopefully it's another three
- 36:01Speaker 7: and a half four years in the prem for Tyler
- 36:03Speaker 7: Adams to continue to grow and he can be that
- 36:06Speaker 7: player for sure.
- 36:07Speaker 2: But on the field, where was it?
- 36:08Speaker 6: Where was it? Wor yeah and he yelling?
- 36:10Speaker 2: We asked this question of the Sounders all the time too.
- 36:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 36:12Speaker 6: I think that's the organic growth of the team.
- 36:14Speaker 8: When you think about there was a few players that
- 36:16Speaker 8: played in England in Europe, Casey Keller being one of them.
- 36:19Speaker 8: Tim Howard, of course, Clint Demsey, Landon Donovan had it
- 36:23Speaker 8: some time in Germany and in Everton as well. And
- 36:26Speaker 8: now you've got the entire eleven playing on teams. But
- 36:29Speaker 8: now that eleven might drop to three four five have
- 36:32Speaker 8: to be that that player that you know, that's the
- 36:34Speaker 8: natural evolution. It's not gonna happen overnight, but I think
- 36:36Speaker 8: it's there. I mean, the US should develop those types
- 36:38Speaker 8: of players. It'll most likely be in an environment in Europe,
- 36:42Speaker 8: but the USO in a good spot. Obviously question marks
- 36:45Speaker 8: of what happens with the coach, you know, I think
- 36:48Speaker 8: the US would, I'm sure, like England, love to have
- 36:50Speaker 8: a US coach for a US team, very much.
- 36:53Speaker 6: Like I think you.
- 36:54Speaker 8: You made the stat earlier this weekend on I think
- 36:57Speaker 8: the England France game that no team has won the
- 36:59Speaker 8: World Cup with a foreign coach, right, It's always been
- 37:02Speaker 8: a domestic coach for that particular country. And I think
- 37:05Speaker 8: there's something special by that because they understand the personality
- 37:07Speaker 8: of the group of the players and of the country well.
- 37:10Speaker 2: And I think there's the also part of it of
- 37:12Speaker 2: the United States youth soccer system, and Danny, I know
- 37:15Speaker 2: you got kids to play, and it's sort of the
- 37:17Speaker 2: element of how do we fix the youth soccer system
- 37:20Speaker 2: to get the best athletes in the United States playing soccer.
- 37:23Speaker 2: That's a whole different conversation we have no time to
- 37:25Speaker 2: get into. I do want to wrap with our final
- 37:28Speaker 2: couple minutes by looking back at this tournament. Brad Evans
- 37:30Speaker 2: Sounders legend, Danny Jackson, voice of the Sounders here on KJUR.
- 37:34Speaker 2: My name is Jackson. Felts in for Greg Bell today
- 37:36Speaker 2: from ten to noon on kJ R. Once again we're
- 37:40Speaker 2: talking Mariners coming up at eleven o'clock with ty Dane Gonzalez,
- 37:43Speaker 2: but talking about the World Cup in general. Brad looking
- 37:47Speaker 2: back at the whole thing over the last couple months,
- 37:50Speaker 2: more than just how it finished here in these semi
- 37:52Speaker 2: finals and the championship with Spain taking it all yesterday
- 37:56Speaker 2: by a score of one and nothing. What are the
- 37:58Speaker 2: takeaways from this, you know, three country World Cup, United States, Canada,
- 38:03Speaker 2: Mexico that has happened over the last couple of months.
- 38:06Speaker 2: I think what.
- 38:07Speaker 7: Opened my eyes the most was all the noise about
- 38:09Speaker 7: fans not showing up to the games, not coming into
- 38:12Speaker 7: the country boycotting the World Cup, you know, not willing
- 38:17Speaker 7: to travel. But now almost every single game it looked
- 38:20Speaker 7: completely sold out, and after the first few games, it
- 38:23Speaker 7: actually blew my mind how many people showed up and
- 38:26Speaker 7: really got to experience the country. I mean, my favorite
- 38:29Speaker 7: part of the World Cup was just watching Early Holland's
- 38:32Speaker 7: YouTube channel and his full experience in the US. I
- 38:36Speaker 7: love to see that sort of stuff because that's what
- 38:38Speaker 7: we do when we go overseas. We put on the
- 38:41Speaker 7: Nordic Viking hat and we walk around downtown sides. Yeah,
- 38:46Speaker 7: and we get made fun of and now the flip
- 38:49Speaker 7: side of that, we get to highlight on that.
- 38:51Speaker 2: So I just love how they really leaned into.
- 38:54Speaker 7: The American culture and that like American dream quote unquote,
- 38:58Speaker 7: so stoked for the fans. Actually here in Seattle, I
- 39:01Speaker 7: went to the last game, but got to experience the
- 39:04Speaker 7: vibe in front of the stadium was unlike anything I
- 39:06Speaker 7: had ever been a part of.
- 39:08Speaker 6: For sure.
- 39:09Speaker 7: Uh, And I'm glad it only happens every four years,
- 39:13Speaker 7: because I can't do this every year.
- 39:15Speaker 8: Yes, I agree, but what I think is is the
- 39:18Speaker 8: world got to see what America really is and what
- 39:21Speaker 8: Mexico and Canada offer to the world as well. The people,
- 39:25Speaker 8: the cultures, the nuances, watching early Hrland walk off the
- 39:29Speaker 8: plane in Norway with a stuffed raccoon with a bottle
- 39:32Speaker 8: of whisky somewhere ready to drink that baby. Yeah, it's
- 39:36Speaker 8: some kind of tea shove in in Texas. And it's
- 39:39Speaker 8: just brilliant that the food that people were eating, all
- 39:41Speaker 8: the memes all over the place, the fans, the Scottish
- 39:45Speaker 8: fans drinking Boston dry. I think the pub in the
- 39:48Speaker 8: middle of Boston on the eve of the Scotland game
- 39:53Speaker 8: did a three x business compared to Saint Patti's Day.
- 39:56Speaker 6: I mean, it's just incredible.
- 39:57Speaker 8: And then then you have you know, the Dutch and
- 40:00Speaker 8: Orange and the Argentinean fans are incredible, and Norwegia with
- 40:03Speaker 8: the Viking rows all over the country, the Egyptians, the English,
- 40:07Speaker 8: and you.
- 40:07Speaker 6: Can go through the mall right.
- 40:08Speaker 8: Every single country was so well represented. There were questions
- 40:12Speaker 8: about the integrity of the fields in indoor facilities and
- 40:15Speaker 8: outdoor facility that they were immaculate. There was never any
- 40:20Speaker 8: animosity on the field, in the stands off the field,
- 40:23Speaker 8: which can happen in big tournaments with all these different countries.
- 40:26Speaker 8: It was a lot of love and there was a
- 40:28Speaker 8: lot of enjoyment of this amazing game. And I think
- 40:31Speaker 8: there'll be a lot of fantastic stories and experiences that
- 40:34Speaker 8: will leave these shores and go back home to wherever
- 40:36Speaker 8: that might be and tell some of these great stories,
- 40:39Speaker 8: these great individuals that grace this game as well. It
- 40:43Speaker 8: was a tournament of the Cinderella stories and the Cape Verdies,
- 40:46Speaker 8: and the Curasaws and the Hated could the Congo and
- 40:49Speaker 8: it is incredible that your stories like that. But then
- 40:51Speaker 8: you have the big time players turning up. They all
- 40:53Speaker 8: did turn up. I mean the only player you could
- 40:55Speaker 8: say was a little bit quiet was probably Ronaldo in
- 40:58Speaker 8: some ways, you know, and they still would popped up
- 41:00Speaker 8: and played a ton of minutes for Portugal. But Bape
- 41:03Speaker 8: and Kine and Bellingham and Yamal obviously wins the World
- 41:07Speaker 8: Cup in Harland, and they all turned up and it
- 41:09Speaker 8: was a fantastic spectacle.
- 41:11Speaker 4: You know.
- 41:11Speaker 6: All you hope is that on any.
- 41:14Speaker 8: Given day, on any given tournament, that each team in
- 41:18Speaker 8: each indvidual is the best they possibly can. I think
- 41:20Speaker 8: you can't really look at this tournament to anything other
- 41:22Speaker 8: than just an unbridled success in all in all aspects,
- 41:26Speaker 8: I think the dynamic ticket pricing was very much maligned,
- 41:29Speaker 8: but it, as Bratt said, every stadium was packed. Yeah,
- 41:32Speaker 8: the atmospheres were amazing. I think it was a very
- 41:35Speaker 8: special World Cup.
- 41:36Speaker 2: It was very special and it was very special to
- 41:38Speaker 2: do with you guys. I can't thank you. And I
- 41:40Speaker 2: know Pete Fewing and Steve Zachawani who joined us, and
- 41:43Speaker 2: Anderson Hurst who hosted Games two. It was an absolute
- 41:46Speaker 2: joy doing it alongside of you guys across the whole country.
- 41:49Speaker 2: I mean, shoot, we kind of did it at here
- 41:52Speaker 2: and in studio out of a broadcast booth we do
- 41:54Speaker 2: for Sounder games, and it was an amazing time. And
- 41:57Speaker 2: to be out there for that game, Jimmy's on first,
- 42:00Speaker 2: the Belgium game. The games in Seattle, Danny has been
- 42:03Speaker 2: a magical last month and a half with you guys.
- 42:07Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 42:07Speaker 8: The last thing I would say, just for Seattle specifically,
- 42:09Speaker 8: is just we hosted such an incredible World Cup just
- 42:13Speaker 8: for the entire six weeks. The planning committee here at
- 42:16Speaker 8: Seattle twenty twenty six did an amazing job. The City
- 42:19Speaker 8: of Seattle showcase, the region showcase, itself so incredibly well,
- 42:23Speaker 8: we all should be extremely proud of the place that
- 42:26Speaker 8: we live and the people that love this game.
- 42:28Speaker 6: And of course let's not forget we have rain and
- 42:30Speaker 6: Sounders support now.
- 42:31Speaker 2: And guys, we're actually out of time, so I don't
- 42:33Speaker 2: have time to ask you any Sounders questions. But I
- 42:35Speaker 2: think coming out of a was it. I don't even
- 42:38Speaker 2: want to mention that lost to Portland, but yeah, well
- 42:40Speaker 2: it was. We will talk to Sounders, I think what
- 42:43Speaker 2: we have Wednesday at Austin five pm. Pre game over
- 42:46Speaker 2: on nine to fifty km on Wednesday, so we'll get
- 42:49Speaker 2: back to Sounders then. But again, thank you so much
- 42:51Speaker 2: for all the work your last couple months. Thanks so
- 42:53Speaker 2: much for coming back in studio again today. Thank you
- 42:57Speaker 2: so much, guys. It's been an absolute joy the last
- 42:59Speaker 2: couple months with you.
- 43:00Speaker 6: Thanks man, Appreciate you. Same to you guys. You guys
- 43:01Speaker 6: at amazing job.
- 43:02Speaker 2: That's Brad Evans and Danny Jackson name is Jackson. Felts
- 43:05Speaker 2: will continue sitting in for Greg Bell. We'll talk some Mariners,
- 43:09Speaker 2: we'll move from soccer to baseball and talk with ty
- 43:12Speaker 2: Dan Gonzalez coming up next here on Sports Radio ninety three.
- 43:15Speaker 2: Point three kjr FM.

- 44:01Speaker 2: word preset p R E S E T preset into
- 44:06Speaker 2: that at nine three three kjr dot com. All right,
- 44:09Speaker 2: headlines brought to you by Frost Brewed Coors Light. Spain
- 44:13Speaker 2: are the World Cup champions. They take down Argentina and
- 44:16Speaker 2: Messi won nothing. A goal from Fernon Torres in the
- 44:20Speaker 2: one hundred and sixth minute gets Spain at their second
- 44:23Speaker 2: World Cup. Mariner has taken two of three from the
- 44:26Speaker 2: Giants over the weekend. Cole Young two home runs, including
- 44:30Speaker 2: one blast on Saturday that kind of turned the whole
- 44:32Speaker 2: weekend around. We're going to talk about that with ty
- 44:35Speaker 2: Dane Gonzalez of Lockdown Mariners coming up in a moment.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Michigan Athletic director Ward Manual gonna step down at the
- 44:42Speaker 2: end of the calendar year, and New Zealand golfer Ryan
- 44:45Speaker 2: Fox won the Open Championship. He birdied the final hole
- 44:49Speaker 2: seventy second hole yesterday at Royal Birkdale. And then I'm
- 44:52Speaker 2: not sure if he saw this, just how he got
- 44:54Speaker 2: home after the Open Championship. He flew in coach on
- 45:00Speaker 2: a commercial flight and put the claret jug in the
- 45:04Speaker 2: overhead bin above his seat in the main cabin of
- 45:08Speaker 2: his commercial flight.
- 45:09Speaker 4: I saw that he had the real one and the replica.
- 45:12Speaker 3: He had to get two of those.
- 45:13Speaker 2: A man of the people, another man of the people,
- 45:16Speaker 2: somebody who always flies with the people, somebody who would
- 45:21Speaker 2: absolutely keep any trophy in the overhead bin like a
- 45:25Speaker 2: man of the people. Ty Dane Gonzalez of Lockdown Mariners
- 45:29Speaker 2: joining us here on kJ R.
- 45:31Speaker 4: Ty.
- 45:31Speaker 2: How you doing, my friend.
- 45:33Speaker 9: I'm doing great, Jackson. Thank you guys so much for
- 45:37Speaker 9: having me today.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for coming back on Jackson. Fell us in
- 45:40Speaker 2: for Greg Bell by the way, going up until Ian
- 45:42Speaker 2: Ferness here at noon today. Tied in Gonzalez. You can
- 45:45Speaker 2: follow him on social at Ty, Dane Gonzalez. Ty, let's
- 45:49Speaker 2: get into it with the Mariners. There's a lot to
- 45:52Speaker 2: discuss coming out of this series. And I think for me,
- 45:56Speaker 2: the big question that I talked about in the opening
- 45:58Speaker 2: segment today earlier one can Cole Young's three run blast
- 46:03Speaker 2: on Saturday tied the game at three, ends up winning
- 46:06Speaker 2: it in extra innings. Julio does win on Sunday. Can
- 46:09Speaker 2: that moment on Saturday be the turning point that launches
- 46:14Speaker 2: another one of these summer runs that we've had over
- 46:16Speaker 2: these last few years.
- 46:19Speaker 5: I certainly hope, so.
- 46:20Speaker 9: I think we all certainly hope.
- 46:21Speaker 2: So.
- 46:22Speaker 5: I think it's also.
- 46:22Speaker 9: Kind of like how we all hope that Jimysy is
- 46:25Speaker 9: this year's at Sea witch right.
- 46:29Speaker 2: I think the god the Jimothy. I'm not sure what's
- 46:32Speaker 2: wrong with that raccoon. I haven't done the research into
- 46:35Speaker 2: the medical condition.
- 46:36Speaker 4: I okay, I've read what was out there. A short
- 46:40Speaker 4: spine is short, so it's compressed.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, Well, if Jimothy can show up at Team
- 46:46Speaker 2: Mobile Park and lead, I don't care how this team wins.
- 46:49Speaker 2: I just want to see wins tie and we see
- 46:52Speaker 2: the week ahead. I mean, this week feels like such
- 46:56Speaker 2: an important week in the grand context. You're facing a
- 46:59Speaker 2: last place Red team. Then you got Friday through next
- 47:01Speaker 2: Monday in Texas for four games. It seems like make
- 47:04Speaker 2: or break considering the tread downe deadline looming, like they
- 47:07Speaker 2: need to prove. It feels to me like for Depoto
- 47:10Speaker 2: and Hollander that this team is worth adding to in
- 47:13Speaker 2: a big way.
- 47:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:16Speaker 9: Absolutely, It's a massive week. It's a it's a massive
- 47:18Speaker 9: home stand. You you know, you open up the second
- 47:20Speaker 9: half of the season against two of the worst teams
- 47:23Speaker 9: in the National League and the Giants of the Reds.
- 47:25Speaker 5: It was nice to.
- 47:26Speaker 9: See this team, you know, show some fight in these
- 47:29Speaker 9: last two games, you know, falling down early in both
- 47:32Speaker 9: of those games and finding a way to claw their
- 47:34Speaker 9: way back and you know, find a way to win
- 47:36Speaker 9: both of those games.
- 47:37Speaker 5: You had to win that series.
- 47:38Speaker 9: You have to stack wins on this Homestand we've said
- 47:41Speaker 9: this on the podcast for the last week or so,
- 47:43Speaker 9: looking ahead to this home stand, and it said, you know,
- 47:46Speaker 9: you need to go four and two, you know, five
- 47:48Speaker 9: to one, you know on this homestand because of you
- 47:51Speaker 9: know what you just laid out again, You're you're going
- 47:53Speaker 9: to Texas for four, You're going to La to face
- 47:56Speaker 9: the back to back defending champs for three, and then
- 47:58Speaker 9: when you get back home for that final series before
- 48:01Speaker 9: the trade deadline, you got three against the Minnesota Twins.
- 48:04Speaker 9: Who's another team that you're competing with here for you know,
- 48:07Speaker 9: at the very least a wild current spot. So this
- 48:10Speaker 9: is a crucial, you know, two weeks stretch here for
- 48:13Speaker 9: this club, and I think specifically with the Giants you
- 48:17Speaker 9: know now and the renewer, but them and the Reds
- 48:20Speaker 9: come into town. You know, these are two teams that
- 48:22Speaker 9: you need to handle business against. And frankly, the Mariners,
- 48:26Speaker 9: you know, a big reason that they're in the position
- 48:28Speaker 9: that they're in right now is because they haven't particularly
- 48:30Speaker 9: handled business against teams like the Giants and the Reds
- 48:33Speaker 9: this year.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, And it sort of feels like we're that
- 48:35Speaker 2: kind of you know, big turning point of Okay, if
- 48:39Speaker 2: you do have a poor week or next two weeks,
- 48:43Speaker 2: then maybe I don't know if the Mariner has become sellers.
- 48:46Speaker 2: I think the seller talk is a little bit crazy
- 48:48Speaker 2: considering the Manners are holding a playoff spot right now.
- 48:51Speaker 9: But and frankly, the aos of the American League might
- 48:55Speaker 9: not let them die.
- 48:56Speaker 2: No matter what exactly. I mean, God, it might take
- 48:59Speaker 2: you eighty five wins might win this division when it's
- 49:02Speaker 2: all said and done. Considering that Texas leads it at
- 49:05Speaker 2: what are they fifty and forty nine right now and
- 49:07Speaker 2: the Mariners are fifty and fifty So yeah, I mean,
- 49:09Speaker 2: who knows how many wins wins the Al West this year?
- 49:12Speaker 2: But yeah, I think the next two weeks certainly will
- 49:14Speaker 2: constitute the next week my constitute. What kind of trade
- 49:18Speaker 2: Dupoto makes. I mean, I don't know but for you,
- 49:20Speaker 2: but I'm pretty confident the Marriagers are going to make
- 49:22Speaker 2: a trade. It's just the question of how big of
- 49:26Speaker 2: a deal from Hollander and to Poto are we talking about.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Maybe that will be decided over the next seven games,
- 49:34Speaker 2: but that's kind of what I'm wondering is is what
- 49:37Speaker 2: size the deal? And then when that deal comes, do
- 49:39Speaker 2: you make it now before anybody else can jump on
- 49:43Speaker 2: offensive players available?
- 49:45Speaker 9: Yeah, that's that's the big question right now. That's the
- 49:47Speaker 9: question that I'm still trying to find the answers to
- 49:51Speaker 9: on my show as well. You know, it's really the
- 49:56Speaker 9: Mariners have the pieces to compete with anyone for anyone
- 50:00Speaker 9: at any you know, player acquisition period. It's just a
- 50:04Speaker 9: matter of who's actually realistically.
- 50:06Speaker 5: Available right now.
- 50:09Speaker 9: And I think you know, from from an offensive standpoint,
- 50:13Speaker 9: there aren't a lot of options, and what you're probably
- 50:15Speaker 9: looking at there are more of the complimentary pieces, you know,
- 50:19Speaker 9: the platum bats, if you will. I know, that's kind
- 50:22Speaker 9: of a you know, a sacrilegious thing to talk about,
- 50:26Speaker 9: especially in the merit space, but like that's probably what
- 50:28Speaker 9: you're looking at. You're probably looking at right handed bats
- 50:30Speaker 9: that improve your chances against left handed pitching. Uh. And
- 50:33Speaker 9: then you know, if you're going to make a bigger deal,
- 50:35Speaker 9: it's probably going to be for a bullpen arm.
- 50:38Speaker 5: That would be my guess.
- 50:39Speaker 9: And obviously there is history. They're just you know, very
- 50:44Speaker 9: recent history there last year would say, you know, trying
- 50:47Speaker 9: very hard to go out and get you on to
- 50:49Speaker 9: run from from the Twins, and ultimately they you know,
- 50:51Speaker 9: they just fell a little bit short in that regard.
- 50:54Speaker 9: I think that suggests that they would you know, take
- 50:56Speaker 9: another big swing in the bullpen this time around. It's
- 51:00Speaker 9: just you know, who is that for, right, Like, is
- 51:03Speaker 9: Mason Miller a realistic possibility? With the padres or is
- 51:07Speaker 9: it more so someone like Luke Weaver who's making a
- 51:09Speaker 9: bit of money and how does that impact you know,
- 51:11Speaker 9: what the trade costs could be there and all that.
- 51:13Speaker 9: So a lot of questions there, But my guess is,
- 51:16Speaker 9: if they're making a high impact edition here in the
- 51:18Speaker 9: next couple of weeks, it's going to be in the bullpen,
- 51:21Speaker 9: not in the lineup.
- 51:22Speaker 2: Yes, you're telling me the the idea that I mean,
- 51:24Speaker 2: I don't know for how many weeks, probably, you know,
- 51:26Speaker 2: since the idea of a piggyback even started way back
- 51:29Speaker 2: when everybody clamoring for we have so many arms in
- 51:34Speaker 2: the minor leagues, trader Ryan Sloan for a big all
- 51:36Speaker 2: star bat, and then you make it a big addition
- 51:39Speaker 2: to that line that kind of that kind of thing
- 51:42Speaker 2: is is not realistic? Yeah?
- 51:45Speaker 9: No, that's that's always my answer to to you know,
- 51:47Speaker 9: cause I get the same questions and we see the
- 51:49Speaker 9: same comments on our show. That's always my my counter is, like, Okay,
- 51:55Speaker 9: who who's who's the all star level bat with you know,
- 51:59Speaker 9: maybe potentially a couple of years of club control, Who
- 52:02Speaker 9: is actually worth trading, you know, maybe the best pitching
- 52:05Speaker 9: prospect in all of baseball for or trading you know,
- 52:08Speaker 9: one of your arms out of your rotation for you know.
- 52:10Speaker 9: So yeah, I just just the way that the league
- 52:16Speaker 9: has fallen this year and who appears to be selling.
- 52:20Speaker 5: I just I don't really I don't really see a way.
- 52:22Speaker 9: For them to make a high impact edition in the
- 52:27Speaker 9: lineup at the moment.
- 52:28Speaker 2: Because it's what you just said, Ty, is the element
- 52:30Speaker 2: of of who's actually selling, because when a below five
- 52:33Speaker 2: hundred team can be holding a playoff spot right around
- 52:36Speaker 2: the trade deadline, at that point, everybody looks at it,
- 52:39Speaker 2: and almost everybody, I mean unless you're the Royals or
- 52:42Speaker 2: the Angels are looking in it saying yeah we can.
- 52:45Speaker 2: I mean, the Blue Jays last place in the AL East,
- 52:47Speaker 2: but they're only seven games under five hundred. They're realistically
- 52:50Speaker 2: in it right now for a playoff berth. So the
- 52:52Speaker 2: question of who's actually selling, especially in the American League
- 52:56Speaker 2: is a really important one. Todd dan Gonzalez is with us.
- 52:59Speaker 2: He hosts Locked on Mariners. You know, follow him on
- 53:01Speaker 2: social at Tie Dan Gonzalez, check out and subscribe to
- 53:04Speaker 2: the law Locked on Mariner's YouTube. Tie does great shows there. Ty,
- 53:10Speaker 2: Let's let's kind of go back to where the team
- 53:13Speaker 2: sits and what they actually have tangibly right now, Cal's weekend,
- 53:18Speaker 2: and for Cal Rawley, obviously we all know this has
- 53:21Speaker 2: been a very, very tough year for him. But you
- 53:24Speaker 2: look on Friday and it's over three for a walk.
- 53:26Speaker 2: You look on Saturday, it's over three. You look on Sunday,
- 53:30Speaker 2: it's oh for four. The question is what is the
- 53:35Speaker 2: confidence level for you that he can find his game
- 53:38Speaker 2: again before it's too late.
- 53:42Speaker 9: It's hard to see it at this point, you know,
- 53:45Speaker 9: this year, I think we're deep enough into the season
- 53:47Speaker 9: now where I think it's fair to say that this
- 53:50Speaker 9: might be one of the greater hangover seasons and the
- 53:54Speaker 9: history of Major League Baseball. I mean, his wrc plus
- 53:57Speaker 9: has fallen from one sixty one last year to sixty
- 54:00Speaker 9: eight this year. Like he's producing at levels that we
- 54:04Speaker 9: are not producing, rather at levels that we haven't seen
- 54:08Speaker 9: from him since his rookie year when he got sent down.
- 54:13Speaker 9: It's it's kind of it's kind of like how we
- 54:15Speaker 9: talk about, you know, just how stunning some of the
- 54:21Speaker 9: you know, platoon bats they brought in have been, like
- 54:23Speaker 9: where like they've just completely fallen off the cliff, like
- 54:25Speaker 9: it's not that they've just regressed. It's like you've gotten
- 54:27Speaker 9: the zero percentile outcome out of them, like you know,
- 54:30Speaker 9: the A. J. Pollitts and the Donovan Solanos and guys
- 54:32Speaker 9: like that, Like we've gotten you know, we all expected
- 54:35Speaker 9: regression from cal Rawley this year. We didn't expect the
- 54:38Speaker 9: zero percentile outcome from cal Rawley. And that's essentially what
- 54:42Speaker 9: we're seeing. And you know, obviously he's dealt with the
- 54:44Speaker 9: oblique injury and you know, we saw how that kind
- 54:47Speaker 9: of just derailed Luke Rayley season last year and you know,
- 54:50Speaker 9: who knows if you know, Calus kind of still dealing
- 54:53Speaker 9: with that. And you know, obviously Cal's is the type
- 54:56Speaker 9: of player that does play through things. So and obviously
- 54:59Speaker 9: I don't want to expec lay too much on that front,
- 55:01Speaker 9: but like, there are reasons here to understand the struggles.
- 55:05Speaker 9: But yeah, it's it's becoming harder and harder to see
- 55:10Speaker 9: the light at the end of the tunnel here, unfortunately.
- 55:13Speaker 9: And I kind of view, you know, anything that that
- 55:16Speaker 9: cal gives you the rest of the way as a bonus,
- 55:18Speaker 9: not something to count on.
- 55:21Speaker 5: But obviously, you know, this is a guy.
- 55:23Speaker 9: That if he does figure it out. You know, even
- 55:25Speaker 9: just for a month, that could be the difference between
- 55:29Speaker 9: missing the playoffs and potentially winning the World Series. That's
- 55:34Speaker 9: how big of an impact that he could potentially have here.
- 55:37Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing with cal right, is that's the
- 55:40Speaker 2: difference between the Mariners going on a run and comfortably
- 55:44Speaker 2: winning the West right now because the Rangers are not
- 55:47Speaker 2: separating themselves, and him having a big August or a
- 55:51Speaker 2: big September can allow the Mariners to comfortably win the division,
- 55:55Speaker 2: get them a decent playoff seed, and suddenly we're talking
- 55:58Speaker 2: about a run and you lean on the pitching and
- 56:00Speaker 2: you know, we're right back when we were last year.
- 56:02Speaker 2: But I'm with you, it's just you. We're not seeing
- 56:04Speaker 2: any glimpse that he is even close to the same person.
- 56:09Speaker 2: Let's go from Ty, Let's go from one former superstar
- 56:12Speaker 2: to one. You know what, I think that's the question.
- 56:16Speaker 2: Julio Rodriguez, he's back from injury, went one for eight
- 56:19Speaker 2: in the two games Saturday Sunday. The hope that he
- 56:23Speaker 2: is he that he's going to return to the old Julio.
- 56:26Speaker 2: But Ty, I think that's that's the kind of the
- 56:28Speaker 2: question that I'm leading myself into right now for you
- 56:30Speaker 2: is what is Julio I mean two point four war
- 56:33Speaker 2: seven thirty seven ops, fourteen homers in eight eighty nine games.
- 56:37Speaker 2: I mean, is Julio Rodriguez you know, going to eventually
- 56:42Speaker 2: creep back to that star territory um now in the
- 56:45Speaker 2: fifth season. Is Julio Rodriguez just kind of the good
- 56:49Speaker 2: to sometimes great player?
- 56:52Speaker 9: It's the question that we are It's the conversation that
- 56:55Speaker 9: we have basically every single year now at this point
- 56:58Speaker 9: with Julio basically at the same time. I you know,
- 57:02Speaker 9: I can't tell you how many times I've answered this conversation.
- 57:05Speaker 9: You know, this question about Julio is like what is
- 57:07Speaker 9: he really? Is he actually a superstar? Is he actually
- 57:10Speaker 9: the face of the franchise? Like is he actually producing
- 57:12Speaker 9: at that level?
- 57:12Speaker 1: You know?
- 57:13Speaker 9: Can he produce at that level? Can he get to
- 57:15Speaker 9: be in you know, an MVP caliber type of player?
- 57:18Speaker 9: And you know, I think this year the difference has
- 57:21Speaker 9: been you know, like this year we finally saw a
- 57:24Speaker 9: much better and a much more consistent offensive first half
- 57:28Speaker 9: from Julio. Unfortunately, that coincided with him significantly regressing on
- 57:32Speaker 9: the defensive end. And now, you know, before his concussion,
- 57:36Speaker 9: the defense started to kind of return back to form
- 57:39Speaker 9: and he was starting to cover more ground. And I
- 57:41Speaker 9: do kind of wonder if maybe he was dealing with
- 57:42Speaker 9: something early on in the season and that was leading
- 57:44Speaker 9: to some of the issues defensively.
- 57:46Speaker 5: Or what have you.
- 57:47Speaker 9: You know, I think Julio, we know that he's a
- 57:50Speaker 9: second half player. I think that is still very possible
- 57:53Speaker 9: that he could just explode. Look, we know what the
- 57:56Speaker 9: potential is here because we've seen it multiple times. We
- 57:59Speaker 9: saw him take over a playoff game, you know, a
- 58:01Speaker 9: couple of playoff games last year. You know, we saw
- 58:04Speaker 9: what he did in August, you know, a couple of
- 58:06Speaker 9: years back. You know, we've seen the hot where he's
- 58:10Speaker 9: the best player on the planet. Like, we know that
- 58:12Speaker 9: that's the potential. It's just the consistency is unfortunately not there.
- 58:18Speaker 9: So I would still to me, I would still classify
- 58:21Speaker 9: Julio as a superstar, and also for for reasons outside
- 58:25Speaker 9: of just kind of what he does on the field, right,
- 58:28Speaker 9: And I think that that does kind of like factor
- 58:30Speaker 9: into the conversation of just like what a superstar is.
- 58:35Speaker 9: But you know, you do need more consistency from him,
- 58:40Speaker 9: especially at a time where you know, the guy who
- 58:43Speaker 9: was your your bona fide superstar last year, Cal Rawley,
- 58:47Speaker 9: has completely fallen off a cliff.
- 58:49Speaker 5: Like you need Julio to pick up that.
- 58:51Speaker 9: Slack and and hopefully that's something that you can do
- 58:54Speaker 9: here over the next couple of months. And you know, I,
- 58:57Speaker 9: you know, I'm willing to give him some some grace
- 59:00Speaker 9: obviously right now as he's returning from my percussion. Concussions
- 59:02Speaker 9: are very very serious injuries, especially in baseball, to recover from.
- 59:07Speaker 9: So you know, I hope fans are at least you know,
- 59:09Speaker 9: understanding of that. But yeah, eventually, like we're gonna need
- 59:13Speaker 9: to see more consistency, especially at the play from Julio,
- 59:15Speaker 9: and we're gonna need to see him be that guy.
- 59:19Speaker 9: You know, I've said this so many times that like
- 59:22Speaker 9: even though that even last year when Cal was doing
- 59:24Speaker 9: what he was doing, Julio is still the most important
- 59:26Speaker 9: guy on this roster.
- 59:28Speaker 2: Well that's the thing, right, if Cal is not going
- 59:30Speaker 2: to be your superstar, you need Julio to step up
- 59:33Speaker 2: and be that. And I that conversation would have been
- 59:36Speaker 2: so easy had you won Game seven in Toronto, because
- 59:39Speaker 2: he was obviously, I mean then suddenly not only is
- 59:42Speaker 2: he playing in the World Series, but he's the Game
- 59:44Speaker 2: seven hero, and you know, the conversation shifts because the
- 59:49Speaker 2: Mariners are out of it, and then now this season
- 59:51Speaker 2: has gone the way it has for him, So you
- 59:54Speaker 2: know that that's just the reality of it. Speaking of
- 59:57Speaker 2: the reality of and Ti Daan Gonzalez is with us.
- 59:59Speaker 2: He's the host of the Mariners Locked On, Locked On Mariners.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: Get subscribed to it on YouTube, follow him on social
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: at tie Dane Gonzales Tie. The reality of the situation
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: is that this defense, I think I messaged you when
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: we were talking about, you know, doing this interview here today,
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: it's sort of a laugh so you don't have to
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: cry situation. I mean it's rough, and I'm wondering, like
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: you know, realistically, we can realistically see cal turn it around.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: We can realistically see the Mariners making an addition that
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: makes them a dangerous contender in the playoffs. I'm not
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: sure it's realistically even possible for this defense to improve
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: to the point improve the point of not only not
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: being a negative, just just just be a positive. And
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: in some way it just seems like it's a negative
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: around the board that could realistically keep this team from
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: doing anything.
- 1:01:01Speaker 9: It's it's not a fun watch, what a series.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: And I'm being so negative right now, but I'm just
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: trying to have hope and I keep getting roadblocks.
- 1:01:11Speaker 9: I totally no, I'm totally with you. It's yeah, this team's,
- 1:01:17Speaker 9: this seem's lack of just pure fundamentals has been maybe
- 1:01:22Speaker 9: the most frustrating part of the season outside of like
- 1:01:25Speaker 9: what we've seen from cal or lack thereof. And yeah,
- 1:01:30Speaker 9: to your point, like that's not something that's going to
- 1:01:31Speaker 9: get better, and frankly, it might even get worse here
- 1:01:37Speaker 9: over you know, the coming weeks, because like, look, you know,
- 1:01:40Speaker 9: Cole Jefferson has been fantastic defensively.
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: For the most part.
- 1:01:44Speaker 9: He's definitely been far better than than JP Crawford there.
- 1:01:48Speaker 9: But he's really going through it offensively right now, especially
- 1:01:51Speaker 9: over the last six weeks. And I think at a
- 1:01:52Speaker 9: certain point, especially because you've made such a heavy investment
- 1:01:55Speaker 9: in this guy, you know, you have to have the
- 1:01:58Speaker 9: conversation about sending him down and letting him figure things
- 1:02:01Speaker 9: out in a less pressurized environment, even though that your
- 1:02:05Speaker 9: team would technically get worse because you're you know, likely
- 1:02:09Speaker 9: moving JP Crawford back to shortstop and then when Brendan
- 1:02:12Speaker 9: Donovan gets back, I guess moving him to to you know,
- 1:02:15Speaker 9: back to third where before he got hurt.
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: He was not particularly good over there either. So yeah,
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: it's possible the.
- 1:02:21Speaker 9: Defense gets even worse here over the coming weeks. And
- 1:02:25Speaker 9: you know that that's just kind of the give and
- 1:02:28Speaker 9: take of this roster.
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: Like even you know, back when.
- 1:02:31Speaker 9: We were previewing this season and back when we were
- 1:02:33Speaker 9: talking about this team as a World Series contender, you know,
- 1:02:38Speaker 9: the defense was was a major issue that that stuck out.
- 1:02:41Speaker 9: But you know, they weren't a good defensive team last
- 1:02:44Speaker 9: year and they.
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: Were eight outs away from the World Series.
- 1:02:46Speaker 9: The thing though, was that, you know, last year, you
- 1:02:49Speaker 9: were able to counteract that by you know putting together
- 1:02:52Speaker 9: you know, really you know, a competent offense in an
- 1:02:55Speaker 9: offense that was dominant at times, especially over that that
- 1:02:58Speaker 9: late stretch from you know in September, and you know,
- 1:03:02Speaker 9: the pitching staff obviously this year, you know, you're not
- 1:03:07Speaker 9: really getting the offense, so you're not able to just
- 1:03:10Speaker 9: kind of mask those deficiencies that you have, and so
- 1:03:13Speaker 9: it's putting those issues under more of a spotlight this year.
- 1:03:17Speaker 9: And you know, frankly it's it's leading to losses. And
- 1:03:21Speaker 9: it's not just the defense, by the way, when I
- 1:03:22Speaker 9: talk about fundamentals, it's base running errors. It's very simple
- 1:03:26Speaker 9: mistakes that this team makes on a constant basis, and
- 1:03:30Speaker 9: it goes from you know, frankly, your star players all
- 1:03:34Speaker 9: the way down to you know, the the fringe minor
- 1:03:37Speaker 9: leaguers that have filtered in and out of this club.
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: Yeah, last thing here for you tied Dan Gonzalez with
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: us here Jackson felt in for Greg Bell Sports Radio
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: ninety three point three kJ R f M tie school
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: us a little bit on Flamine Sealston. It brought promoted
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: to double A Arkansas. Is this kid someone to watch
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: when it comes to possible trades for that bullpen arm
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: you talked about, or is he a legitimate part of
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: the Mariner's future after considering what we've seen now as
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: well with cold Emerson's emergence at shortstop.
- 1:04:09Speaker 9: Yeah, my guess is that of the best prospects the
- 1:04:14Speaker 9: Mariners have, he would be at the top of the
- 1:04:18Speaker 9: list of the guys that are most likely to be traded.
- 1:04:20Speaker 9: It's just again like for who, right, That's that's the question,
- 1:04:24Speaker 9: because it is hard to see a future, at least
- 1:04:28Speaker 9: an immediate future for Selzen. And this is coming from
- 1:04:32Speaker 9: you know, people that I've talked to that are smarter
- 1:04:34Speaker 9: than I, particularly in the you know, the prospect circuit,
- 1:04:40Speaker 9: you know, because there are some questions about if he
- 1:04:42Speaker 9: can stick up the middle and if he can even
- 1:04:44Speaker 9: stay on the dirt. Frankly, there is some thoughts that
- 1:04:47Speaker 9: he could wind up in a corner outfield spot eventually,
- 1:04:51Speaker 9: which could actually you know, lead to a more clear
- 1:04:56Speaker 9: path for.
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: Him to playing time in Seattle.
- 1:04:58Speaker 9: It's just obviously like what Cole Young's doing right now,
- 1:05:01Speaker 9: he likes he looks like your second basement in basement
- 1:05:04Speaker 9: of the future. And cold Emerson, well, obviously there's been
- 1:05:07Speaker 9: struggles this year. Cole Emerson's going to be your shot,
- 1:05:10Speaker 9: your shortstop in twenty twenty seven, and and you know,
- 1:05:12Speaker 9: hopefully there are no issues that that put his ability
- 1:05:15Speaker 9: to do that beyond twenty twenty.
- 1:05:16Speaker 5: Seven, you know, in questions.
- 1:05:18Speaker 9: So, yeah, Sulston's kind of a just a tough fit
- 1:05:24Speaker 9: right now, just to see, like, you know, in a
- 1:05:26Speaker 9: year or two times.
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: That's not to say that like they couldn't make.
- 1:05:30Speaker 9: It work eventually, but it's it's been real nice to
- 1:05:34Speaker 9: see what he's done this year, you know, because like
- 1:05:37Speaker 9: he had really struggled to stay on the field for
- 1:05:39Speaker 9: his first couple of.
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: Years in the organization.
- 1:05:40Speaker 9: He's finally stayed healthy this year and you know, in
- 1:05:43Speaker 9: hi A, he finally just started crushing the ball. I
- 1:05:45Speaker 9: think he had a twenty five game his streak or
- 1:05:48Speaker 9: something like that that he was on for a while there.
- 1:05:51Speaker 9: You know, ends up slashing three, fourteen, four, nine, five,
- 1:05:54Speaker 9: thirty four and high a one forty one WRC plus.
- 1:05:57Speaker 9: Like he very much earned this promotion to out of LA.
- 1:06:01Speaker 9: It'll be interesting to see how he, you know, how
- 1:06:04Speaker 9: he adjusts.
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: To that league.
- 1:06:08Speaker 9: It's been a mixed bag with with some Mariners hitting
- 1:06:11Speaker 9: prospects over the years going to Arkansas, going to Dickie
- 1:06:15Speaker 9: Stevens Park, where for you know, a couple of guys
- 1:06:18Speaker 9: that's been you know, it's taken a little bit of
- 1:06:20Speaker 9: a time for for them to get into the swing
- 1:06:23Speaker 9: of things there. Others have just hit the ground running,
- 1:06:26Speaker 9: like Michael o' royal last year. So we'll see what
- 1:06:29Speaker 9: the case is for Saliston.
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: But he is a you know, a.
- 1:06:31Speaker 9: Fascinating prospect who you know, really hit both sides.
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: Of play.
- 1:06:37Speaker 9: Uh, you know, and you know, at one point was
- 1:06:39Speaker 9: considered to be, you know, one of the better international
- 1:06:42Speaker 9: prospects out there. Certainly a lot of upside there. Just yeah, again,
- 1:06:47Speaker 9: very curious to see what his future ultimately would look
- 1:06:50Speaker 9: like in Seattle. And I do you know think that,
- 1:06:52Speaker 9: like the mayors did trade from their top ten prospects
- 1:06:56Speaker 9: group this summer, that he's probably at or near the
- 1:07:00Speaker 9: top of the list, probably along with you know, Las
- 1:07:02Speaker 9: World Montes, maybe Johnny Farnlo, guys like that.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: Ty, you posted about it this morning. I posted about
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: it this morning. Have you bought your Avengers Doomsday tickets yet?
- 1:07:14Speaker 9: So I gotta get with my buddy on that. Actually,
- 1:07:18Speaker 9: we gotta we gotta get on that.
- 1:07:21Speaker 5: Suit some done with you.
- 1:07:22Speaker 9: I'm hopping on a call with my buddy to get
- 1:07:24Speaker 9: that done. But yeah, that trailer trailer was U was
- 1:07:27Speaker 9: pretty cool.
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: I'm really looking forward to it.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: I got my ticket, so I'll let you go by
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: years and then hop on that call with your buddy.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: Thanks so much for the visit, my friend.
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: Yeah, thank you so much for having me appreciate it.

- 1:08:59Speaker 2: Softy Maller back by the way from his trip to
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: I think he went to about four different locations in
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: his Northwest staycation. He went over to montanaa. We saw
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: some young Clydesdale's his wife. That's amazing vacationing on the coast.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: I don't know how many different places of vacation over
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: the last couple of weeks. The Softy's back will be
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: with Hugh Millin and myself at three o'clock later today.
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: Jaxon putting in those extra miles today.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: That's a big day post World Cup for sure, Jess,
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: And I know you're double dipping as well. You got Mariners.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: You're gonna heading out to teamo wol Park a.
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: Little later on be bothering those guys for the.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: First of the three games series, Marriers hosting the Reds.
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: All right, let's get to some texts here, Jess, what
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: do you guts on the Tacoma Dodge text line today?
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: Well, of the major subjects we covered was World Cup, obviously,
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: but we also talked about the Mariners, and we're gonna
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: start with that this coming in from the two five
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: to three. I'm so tired of every season hearing we
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: need to get a bat. That's a huge load of
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: bea and the Ems have bats. They just need those
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: bats to do what they're supposed to do. They have
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: Julio cal Naylor, Randy Young, Cole Jung has been using
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: his bat.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: Yeah, Cole Young is probably your best player right now
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: across the board.
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: We've been saying that for a couple of weeks now, Yeah.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: So, but I mean the reality is like, no, the
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: Marriors should not need a bat, all things being equal
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: and all things being logical. But the problem is is
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: that Cal isn't hitting. Julio isn't I mean he was
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: obviously now back from his concussion, but one for eight
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: on Saturday and Sunday. The Marritors need a bat because
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: of the players not performing to their level. So regardless
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: of they shouldn't need a bat, regardless of shouldn't, they
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: do need it if they want to go on a run.
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: But as Tidian Gonzalez said, there's just not a big
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: bat available to trade a Ryan Sloan for. That just
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: doesn't exist.
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: It doesn't meant And I think that was actually a
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: really good conversation that you have with ty Dan Gonzalez,
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: because you do have to look at reality. Okay, yes,
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: you want them to make a move, and let's you know, say,
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: I know that this two five to three is not
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: very happy hearing that, But.
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: What can you do?
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: And that That's what Justin and Jerry always have to
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: toy with when it comes around this time of year
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: as we lead up to the trade deadline.
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: Right because if you if you have to listen, if
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: there is the best player on the worst team, is that,
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: if that's still a platoon player, then what are we doing?
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: You know, if that guy's not available, then you obviously
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: make that move. But if that guy doesn't exist to
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: actually put this team into a decent offensive place, then
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: exactly what are you gonna do?
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: What else we got?
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: I'm from the four two five.
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: This was also a part of the conversation that we've
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: been having on their defense, and the four to two
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: five says MD improves by putting Julio in right field
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: and making Victor the everyday center fielder like he basically
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: played his whole life, unlike putting Donovan at second young
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: hat shortstop and moving Emerson down until the September call ups.
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: No, I'm not with that.
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: I'm not with the down move.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: Yeah, no, you just gotta because then then you're encroaching
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: into the territory that we've seen so many Mariners go
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: in before where hey, you bring a guy up and
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: it looks like, all right, he's here for good, this
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: is his big break, and then you just obliterate his
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: confidence by sending him back down. You gotta let the
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: kid work through his problems. You gotta give him time
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: and eventually he'll figure it out. But I mean Cole Young, right,
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: Cole Young figured it out. It took twenty twenty six
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: to figure it out, but he had time to work
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: through that. You gotta give Colt Emerson the same track
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: that you did Cole Young, because clearly it can pay off.
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: I agree, I agree, I just like, I mean, Kelnick
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: is the first one that comes to mind. But if
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: we want to go in the way back machine, you
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: can go back to Dustin.
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: Ackley, actly Zanino. I mean, the list goes on. The
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: idea was brought up way too early, and then he
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: had that game of back and forth and it killed
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: his confidence. So I just don't want that to happen
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: again to a guy like cold Emerson, that we have
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: such high hopes.
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: I also don't think it's necessary right now, Like I
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: just really don't. Here we go two, five, three, those
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: are when now moves we can't rely on our shortstop
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: when now moves, or that we can't rely on our
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: shortstop and third baseman hitting in the hundred's batting average. Sorry,
- 1:13:26Speaker 4: I sometimes the voice to text. I should have read
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: that beforehand.
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: No, it's all good.
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: But yeah, if you can't rely on your infielders to rake,
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: then it becomes a problem.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: I think. Is what that for?
- 1:13:39Speaker 5: Two?
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: Yeah, and in general like that, that's kind of goes
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: back to that's why we need to add some mean
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: you're not going to I think move away from the
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: Emerson Young You're obviously not moving away from nailor JP
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: Crawford's now at third, and I think JP Crawford at
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: third is worth keeping his bat in the lineup. And
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: unless you were able to if if a Heinio Sorez
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: deal was on the table this year, if that was
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: available for this year like it was last year, that
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: seems to be a pretty clear Okay, there you go.
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: But if if ty Dane Gonzalez is right that a
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: Swreres type move isn't there and isn't available, then yet,
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: the question for for Justin and Jerry is what's the
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: best move you can make if that's a bullpen arm
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: and that means giving up a feline Selliston that he
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: talked about. Then Okay, clearly something needs to improve. So
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: this team can get away from fifty to fifty where
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: they're at right now and cut what a concept? Fifty
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: four percent sure would be nice right now if the
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: Maritors were winning fifty four percent of their games?
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: What's next? Y, yes, Stephen Stevens, let's go into soccer
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: because we have a Sounders question from the two five
- 1:14:50Speaker 4: three Jackson. Are Sounder's going to make a move during
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: the transfer window and what are they going to do
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: about offense?
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: Right now? Morris and Perreira are major liabilities.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: Same, I means kind of the same thing as the Mariners,
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: Like they have money. Their general manager, Craig Wibele has
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: been adding soccer is an MLS specifically is a little
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: bit crazy. We have all these different terms for money.
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: It isn't just in one big pot like in a
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: salary cap. There's what's called general allocation money and targeted
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: allocation money GAM and TAM and DP spending. It's absolutely
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: that's designated players spending. Folks don't get that in your
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: head that it's anything other than that. When I say
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: DP spending, but listen, they have money to spend, gam
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: money to spend. They need offense. Would love to see
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: Craig Wible go out and make a maybe not massive move,
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: but go out and bring in it, you know, for
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: what Ty said, right, platoon player, The Sounders need a
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: platoon forward because they need somebody to come in and
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: inject some offensive life into this team after I mean,
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: I refuse to mention what happened last week. It was
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: maybe the worst worst defeat I've ever seen from the Sounders.
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: And now they have games at Austin on Wednesday at
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: five point thirty and then at Philadelphia at four thirty
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: on Saturdays. So hopefully we get more offense than against Portland.
- 1:16:09Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: That the game of which we do not speak. We'll
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: just go with that. Yeah, Yeah, okay, one more, yes,
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: one more? Well, I wanted to get this one in
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: from the four two five. You did a fantastic job
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: covering the World Cup. You guys did a fantastic job
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: covering the World Cup.
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: And thank you for doing it.
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: And if people don't know how hard our crew, we
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: should include Travis in this as he ran. Travis Muger
- 1:16:36Speaker 4: ran the majority of what was going on in the studio,
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: and we had our host Jackson and Anders, and then our
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: analysts Danny and Brad. That was a lot and I
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: feel like you guys met it with Bill Force and
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: we are proud of it.
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: Yeah, well I appreciate that four two five.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: Thanks to Brad Evans. Danny Jackson joined us earlier in
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: the show. Check out the podcast in case you missed it.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: Also Pete Fewing, Steve Zachawani you mentioned, and and I
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: hosted the games. Jeff White and Terry Ryan are engineer's
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: amazing job by them. I know we always joke about Terry,
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: but man, the work that Terry Ryan put in over
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: this last two months has been amazing. And then Travis Muger.
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: Travis was epic on all levels, and Mike Shacker from
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: down in Portland who helped that as well. The entire
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: World Cup team we had over these last six weeks
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: was brilliant. So thank you so much.
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, I'd loved listening to it.
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: It was one of those things and as someone.
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: Who is you know, I would be transparent about a
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: casual soccer fan, but I did enjoy the World Cup
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: and I would.
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: Go oh, my guys are on, My guys are on.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: I'm gonna do it.
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I hope everybody enjoyed. And now we'll see what
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: that does for soccer moving forward for sure over the
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: next few months here in MLS action. All right, we'll
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: get a break here, we'll wrap up the show. We
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: got Ian Fornest coming in for cross talk, Jackson Feltz
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: in for Greg Bell more coming up Sports Radio at
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: ninety three point three KJRFM, Jackson Felts in for Greg
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: Bell ten to twelve. Thanks for joining us here today
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: nine three point three kjr FM, leading into the I
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Infernest show coming up at noon, and Ian joins us
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: right now for a little cross talking and how you doing,
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: Buddy good? How are you good? I'm good. It's overretty tired.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: Are you done?
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: We're very tired. Yeah, the last like I'll be able
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: to tell everybody about it about you know, months from now,
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: after it's all calmed down and cool down. But like
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: the last five days of my life has been as
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: crazy as I think any period ever leading into the
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: final and everything else going on. I'm ready for because
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: you had a game on that's right, Well, was that
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: really a game. No, I've refused to acknowledge that it
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: even exists. I mean, that's that's the worst sounder game
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: I've ever seen. I think it's the worst scheduling I've
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: ever seen. To be honest with you, really on a
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: Thursday game, Well it was no lead up.
- 1:19:16Speaker 10: You you made a point. I don't want to interrupt you.
- 1:19:18Speaker 10: You made a great point earlier. I thought the MLS
- 1:19:23Speaker 10: did itself a massive disservice by if there was any
- 1:19:28Speaker 10: kind of MLS promotion and I watched I mean, hell,
- 1:19:31Speaker 10: you know, because I was texting you and Anders the
- 1:19:33Speaker 10: whole time. I watched a lot of soccer with the
- 1:19:35Speaker 10: last month and a half. I can't remember one time
- 1:19:38Speaker 10: going on now. Maybe maybe Fox and FIFA jarge charge
- 1:19:40Speaker 10: him so much. I don't know. But you've got to
- 1:19:43Speaker 10: find a way if you're they're moronic commissioner, who's right
- 1:19:48Speaker 10: up there with Manford, You've got to find a way
- 1:19:51Speaker 10: to ride that wave. And I mean, god, how easy
- 1:19:54Speaker 10: would have been to do like a big old hype
- 1:19:56Speaker 10: promotional video for the MLS show Messy Well they places
- 1:20:01Speaker 10: for them, they put that out there, But they put
- 1:20:03Speaker 10: that out there at the end last Thursday it's the
- 1:20:06Speaker 10: excitement of the tournament was early, it wasn't late. And
- 1:20:10Speaker 10: and then I don't know what our team does our
- 1:20:12Speaker 10: team ever market or advertise themselves. Yeah, I mean besides
- 1:20:16Speaker 10: all due respect your show, like your show on Tuesdays.
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: No, I mean they do, and I think you know
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: they do than they do. Yeah, well, the Maryors do
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: more than they do, and I and the Marriors don't
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: have to. The Seahawks do more than they do, and
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: they don't have to. Like the Sounders missed it, I
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: on that game. Honestly, I'm in sport now. I was
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: all off a little bit last week. That game last
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: Thursday snuck up on me. That should never happen, like
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: Sounders missed. MLS missed golden opportunities because we just had
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: a phenomenal How many weeks was it, Jackson was six
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: way six weeks phenomenal, six weeks of socd Well, how
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: do you not like if it's not ticket, if it's
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: Fox National as a league, how do you not invest
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: money in running advertisements during game saying find your local team?
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: MLS soccer dot com. You know, you know, hey, this
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: this doesn't end, but you do that. I think the
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: official date of this their whole like the whole campaign.
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: You'll love this. The tagline of the campaign is thanks World,
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: will take it from here, and you have David Beckham
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: at the end of the commercial say thanks world, will
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: take it from here and Messi's on there. But again
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: it's one of those things where it only comes at
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: the very very end, Like you needed the consistency through
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: the whole tournament.
- 1:21:28Speaker 10: And we never got that the messaging too. I saw
- 1:21:30Speaker 10: stat today that I think MLS was like what fifth
- 1:21:33Speaker 10: or sixth most in terms of minutes played by their
- 1:21:36Speaker 10: players in the World Cup, ahead of Argentina's professional league,
- 1:21:41Speaker 10: Like a bunch of leagues that are that had teams
- 1:21:43Speaker 10: in the finals. Now we all know why because a
- 1:21:45Speaker 10: lot of guys playing Premier League and stuff like that.
- 1:21:48Speaker 10: But but nevertheless, yeah, like market that, like market that,
- 1:21:53Speaker 10: Like I just thought they just missed, Like because everyone's
- 1:21:56Speaker 10: because this is everyone in the country's doing the same
- 1:21:58Speaker 10: show and talk about the same stuff. We don't one
- 1:22:00Speaker 10: of the after shocks. You know what, how can soccer
- 1:22:03Speaker 10: build on it? Blah blah blah, all those things. Well,
- 1:22:06Speaker 10: the opportunity was there and you.
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: Miss, Yeah, you just miss. And I think you will
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: see like a two thousand and three thousand jump in
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: places like Columbus and Orlando and cities. Cities will see
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: minor jumps. I think for the Sounders, you used to
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: have the crowd of forty thousand people every game and
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: it was just consistent. Forty k COVID brings that down
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: to about thirty and now you're kind of right around
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: thirty for most games. The idea was, all right, last
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: time the World Cup was in the United States, it
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: spawned this entire league. Can it get us back to
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: forty and then we get good attendance for that Portland game,
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: really good attendance, and it was loud, it was energetic,
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: there was a lot of energy. Sure, but then you
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: go out and five to one does not inspire people
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: to go do season tickets. Why was frustrated?
- 1:22:51Speaker 10: Why would you even I think more importantly, like optionally
- 1:22:54Speaker 10: lost there. Why would you even go back? Yeah, like
- 1:22:56Speaker 10: if you went to that game and now here's the problem.
- 1:22:59Speaker 10: I think this is an issue too. This is I've
- 1:23:00Speaker 10: been I've been I've hated this about the Sounders since
- 1:23:03Speaker 10: day one. They spent they did the Portland Trailblazers playing
- 1:23:06Speaker 10: in the old Memorial Coliseum mistake. They basically never had
- 1:23:11Speaker 10: tickets for anybody beside season ticket holders early years of
- 1:23:14Speaker 10: the franchise. Sound remember the Sounders did that. Yeah, and
- 1:23:17Speaker 10: people like our family, which was a soccer family. Kids
- 1:23:19Speaker 10: were playing like high level soccer and traveling and all
- 1:23:22Speaker 10: that stuff. We never went to games. Well, you lost
- 1:23:24Speaker 10: a whole generation of fans, and that was a massive mistake.
- 1:23:27Speaker 10: Adrian doesn't make a lot of mistakes. That was a
- 1:23:29Speaker 10: big mistake. I remember having that conversation with on the air.
- 1:23:31Speaker 10: So even though you're thirty or forty thousand that went
- 1:23:33Speaker 10: to the Thursday game, the same people, it's not nobody knew.
- 1:23:37Speaker 10: It's it's nobody knew, like that's it. The means it
- 1:23:41Speaker 10: might be a few, but honestly, it's really the same
- 1:23:43Speaker 10: old crowd. You can't do that. You've got to expand
- 1:23:46Speaker 10: your your crowd. But I just I, you know, we
- 1:23:49Speaker 10: had such a great event. By the way, you guys
- 1:23:51Speaker 10: did a hell of a job you and the crew,
- 1:23:54Speaker 10: and Andrews did a hell of a job, Travis producing it.
- 1:23:57Speaker 10: You guys did a great job. It's such a weird
- 1:24:00Speaker 10: tournament in the sense that it just it's so good.
- 1:24:02Speaker 10: It's great early and then it just kind of peters
- 1:24:05Speaker 10: out a.
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: Little bit together. The four favorites going into the whole
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: thing were the final four.
- 1:24:09Speaker 10: And the blast game was such a dud, like just
- 1:24:11Speaker 10: an absolute snooze, wasn't the but Anders team embarrassed itself.
- 1:24:16Speaker 10: I'm gonna blast them today, will be fun.
- 1:24:18Speaker 5: I'm not here.
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: We're you ever gonna get a red card? At least
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: you did it with that kind of fashion.
- 1:24:23Speaker 10: Well what do you mean he got he got a
- 1:24:24Speaker 10: red card because of the first terrible Well, yeah that
- 1:24:27Speaker 10: was the first yellow.
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: In the second yellow, no, I mean the second one
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: would have been would have been just.
- 1:24:33Speaker 10: Bitched it the official because Argentina was a bunch of whining,
- 1:24:35Speaker 10: sniveling brats, is what happened.
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: And they and then he got They got what they deserved.
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: It pisses me off. It piss me off because I
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: had money off. I see, I see what else? A
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: good number in front of a big plush. We're gonna
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: do a.
- 1:24:52Speaker 10: Little thing all week with Corbyn Smith leading up to
- 1:24:54Speaker 10: training camp which starts on Saturday. Uh seahawk wise one
- 1:24:57Speaker 10: o'clock mullywop minus one today and then we'll get in
- 1:25:00Speaker 10: a little bit of the World Cup some other stuff.
- 1:25:02Speaker 10: I don't know if I'll make it the dumb I'm
- 1:25:05Speaker 10: waiting for some stats, some actual numbers. I've got some
- 1:25:08Speaker 10: guy working on it for me. The dumbest thing you're
- 1:25:11Speaker 10: gonna hear after the World Cup is George Kittle and others.
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: All the field should be grass. Cool.
- 1:25:16Speaker 10: Yeah, that's that's a that's a smart move because all
- 1:25:20Speaker 10: those pristine grass fields that only had games on them,
- 1:25:23Speaker 10: not even training sessions.
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: That would work in the NFL. Nope. Places in Seattle
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: where it rains all the time. You have to read
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: you the grass over and over and over. After football
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: and MLS changing their calendar, Yeah, wouldn't work, that's right.
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: The MLS is that next year, right, Yeah, twenty twenty seven,
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: twenty eight is the first? When is a twenty seven season?
- 1:25:41Speaker 6: Sorry?
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: Sorry, we we do. We do a five month season
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: starting in February and then and then it resets after that.
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: It's so weird. Yeah, really weird. In Fornest twelve to
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: three coming up, Thanks so much, Jackson feltz In for
