- 0:00The mother provides simple yet powerful guidance about the
- 0:04connection between one's attitude and his digestive
- 0:07system. If we consider for a moment the
- 0:11times when we are out of sorts, feeling angry or bitter or
- 0:16somewhat sharp and biting in our reactions to others, we can see
- 0:20that in many cases there is a reaction that knots up the
- 0:24digestive system. We experience various
- 0:28disturbances of the digestion and we feel generally out of
- 0:32sorts. Many people who suffer chronic
- 0:36digestive upsets have a generally negative attitude
- 0:39towards life. The connection works in both
- 0:43directions. A bitter frame of mind can cause
- 0:47digestive disturbance, but also the digestive system is capable
- 0:52of sending back signals to the brain when there is some organic
- 0:56cause of disturbance there, leading to a sour mental
- 1:00attitude. This relationship between the
- 1:04digestive system and the mind has been in recent years
- 1:08extensively studied by medical researchers.
- 1:11They validated the signal pathway and the result and
- 1:15conclude that states of worry or anxiety in particular can upset
- 1:20the digestion. The development of stomach or
- 1:24duodenal ulcers is just one manifestation of the power of
- 1:28the attitude to harm the digestive tract.
- 1:31Studies actually have shown that about 50% of digestive issues
- 1:36are caused by the disturbed mental attitude, while the other
- 1:4150% show that digestive issues have caused the mental attitude.
- 1:47This tight interrelation between the two systems provides a clue
- 1:51for managing the situation. As an individual becomes more
- 1:56aware, he can begin to consciously undertake steps to
- 2:00bring calm, peace, contentment to the being.
- 2:05These actions, whether through development of an attitude of
- 2:09harmlessness and kindness, emotional goodwill, conscious
- 2:14attention, breathing techniques, meditation, chanting, music, or
- 2:20other modes of action, can reduce anxiety and begin to
- 2:24create a positive feedback loop that aids both the mind and the
- 2:29digestive system, the mother writes.
- 2:33Quote Always be kind and you will be free from suffering.
- 2:40Always be contented and happy and you will radiate your quiet
- 2:45happiness. It is particularly noticeable
- 2:50that all the digestive functions are extremely sensitive to an
- 2:53attitude that is critical, bitter, full of ill will to a
- 2:59sour judgement. Nothing disturbs the functioning
- 3:03of the digestion more than that, and it is a vicious circle.
- 3:08The more the digestive function is disturbed, the more unkind
- 3:12you become. Critical, dissatisfied with life
- 3:16and things and people. So you can't find any way out.
- 3:21And there is only one cure. To deliberately drop this
- 3:26attitude, to absolutely forbid yourself to have it, and to
- 3:31impose upon yourself by constant self-control a deliberate
- 3:37attitude of all comprehending kindness.
- 3:40Just try and you will see that you feel much better.
