Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, Hurdler's Emily and Body here bringing you another installment
- 0:24Speaker 1: of Five Minute Friday.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Hi.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Man, I talk about this in the Weekly Hurdle this week,
- 0:34Speaker 1: but lately life feels bogged down and like a sprint
- 0:42Speaker 1: and like there's not enough hours in the day, and
- 0:45Speaker 1: so I feel like this exhale knowing that it's Thursday.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Well it's Friday when you're listening to this, but it's
- 0:53Speaker 1: Thursday when I'm recording this for you, which means that
- 0:57Speaker 1: we've almost made it to the weekend. And anyway, for
- 1:02Speaker 1: Five Minute Friday this week, if you're new to the show,
- 1:04Speaker 1: first and foremost, I just want to say thank you.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And I don't know if it's possible for me to
- 1:09Speaker 1: reiterate enough to the people that are listening to this episode. You,
- 1:15Speaker 1: the Hurdlers, how integral you are to my day to
- 1:21Speaker 1: day and the success of this show. I know I
- 1:25Speaker 1: have said this before and I'll say it again right now.
- 1:29Speaker 1: That sharing the show, sharing the episodes that you like
- 1:33Speaker 1: to listen to, hopefully that's most of them reviewing the show,
- 1:37Speaker 1: all of this, it makes a really big difference. You know,
- 1:41Speaker 1: my goal has my goals with the show have fluctuated
- 1:46Speaker 1: over time. But what I know to be true is
- 1:49Speaker 1: that the more people that listen to this And I
- 1:51Speaker 1: was talking to Katrina Scott from Tone it Up.
- 1:54Speaker 2: About this today.
- 1:55Speaker 1: But my goal is to help and impact the most
- 1:58Speaker 1: amount of people possible, and as a member of my community,
- 2:02Speaker 1: it would mean the world to me if you could
- 2:05Speaker 1: help me do that. So please, if you haven't sent
- 2:08Speaker 1: Hurdle to a friend, if you haven't posted the show
- 2:11Speaker 1: on your Instagram story, if you haven't reviewed the show, like,
- 2:15Speaker 1: just do me this solid this week and do that.
- 2:18Speaker 1: It takes only a few seconds, but truly it can
- 2:23Speaker 1: make all of the difference, and it can help me
- 2:25Speaker 1: grow this community, which I am so so thankful that
- 2:29Speaker 1: you're a part of. Anyway, five Minute Friday, if you're
- 2:32Speaker 1: new to the community, welcome. I share a story, I
- 2:36Speaker 1: offer a thought prompt, and I finish things off with
- 2:40Speaker 1: both the highlights of the week, stuff that I am digging,
- 2:42Speaker 1: stuff that I think is awesome, as well as answering
- 2:45Speaker 1: a listener question. This week, I want to comment on
- 2:49Speaker 1: one of the questions that came in earlier. I'd say
- 2:53Speaker 1: on Monday, I posted this asking for some of your
- 2:57Speaker 1: questions on Instagram, and one of the questions that came
- 3:00Speaker 1: in a question I often ask my guests what excites
- 3:05Speaker 1: you right now?
- 3:07Speaker 2: I have a long thought.
- 3:08Speaker 1: About that, because I feel like the default answer would
- 3:11Speaker 1: be Wow, it's so exciting that we are all coming
- 3:14Speaker 1: back together after what has been the most difficult fourteen
- 3:17Speaker 1: to sixteen months for so many and the shared experience
- 3:21Speaker 1: of just oh.
- 3:24Speaker 2: But what truly truly excites me right now is.
- 3:29Speaker 1: The idea of letting go. I, like many of you,
- 3:35Speaker 1: took the last year to dive headfirst into my work
- 3:41Speaker 1: because it was the thing that kept me saying. It
- 3:44Speaker 1: was the thing that empowered me to be me when
- 3:46Speaker 1: so much felt just so uncertain. And now I am
- 3:52Speaker 1: getting to a place where I have the resources to
- 3:57Speaker 1: work with a podcast editor, to work with a video editor,
- 4:01Speaker 1: to empower the hurdle interns to take ownership and learn
- 4:08Speaker 1: from me and teach them the things that I know,
- 4:12Speaker 1: like so many of my mentors did with me. And
- 4:16Speaker 1: I'm excited because this offloading of different tasks that I
- 4:22Speaker 1: have been doing forever, it is going to empower me
- 4:27Speaker 1: to focus on the stuff that really matters to me,
- 4:29Speaker 1: and that is creating high quality, great content to bring
- 4:35Speaker 1: to you I'm also excited because, to be honest with you,
- 4:39Speaker 1: in taking all of this on over the past year,
- 4:43Speaker 1: I have maybe put off some of the other things
- 4:47Speaker 1: that are really important to me. I am a single,
- 4:51Speaker 1: thirty three year old woman, and I'll be damned if
- 4:55Speaker 1: I don't know thirty five, thirty six, thirty seven like
- 4:58Speaker 1: life is taken away and I am so freaking excited
- 5:02Speaker 1: to share my life with someone. And maybe they're listening
- 5:06Speaker 1: to this, And sometimes I think about the fact that
- 5:08Speaker 1: some of my past partners could be listening to this,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and I'm mortified at what.
- 5:11Speaker 2: They may take away from some of these episodes.
- 5:14Speaker 1: But I am ready to invest in myself because I
- 5:18Speaker 1: feel like I've put in the work right. I'm ready
- 5:21Speaker 1: to go out on a Tuesday again, which I haven't
- 5:26Speaker 1: been doing in so long, and travel again and just
- 5:30Speaker 1: give back to me in a way that I haven't
- 5:33Speaker 1: been able to for some time. And I don't want
- 5:37Speaker 1: to say all that because I feel any kind of
- 5:39Speaker 1: way about the last year. I chose to do the
- 5:42Speaker 1: last year like I did the last year. I want
- 5:46Speaker 1: to continue investing in this community. I want to empower
- 5:51Speaker 1: all of you to be your best selves. But in
- 5:53Speaker 1: order for me to show up in a better way,
- 5:55Speaker 1: I'm going to need to be able to pour from
- 5:57Speaker 1: a more full cup than I have been pouring form, if.
- 6:01Speaker 2: That makes sense.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And so what excites me is that opportunity, that opportunity
- 6:06Speaker 1: to come back to me, that opportunity to refocus, regroup,
- 6:13Speaker 1: bring others into the fold, and invest in myself and
- 6:18Speaker 1: all of you in the process. My prompt for you
- 6:21Speaker 1: this week, what is it that you are excited about
- 6:25Speaker 1: right now?
- 6:26Speaker 2: Again?
- 6:26Speaker 1: What is it that you are excited about right now?
- 6:32Speaker 1: Highlights of the week links to all of this, y'all know.
- 6:35Speaker 1: The drill are in the show notes. First Up, sign Up,
- 6:39Speaker 1: Empathy and Action a workshop, a Juneteenth celebration on Saturday,
- 6:44Speaker 1: June nineteenth, That is tomorrow if you're listening to this
- 6:47Speaker 1: in real time. My friend and hurdler Taylor ray Almonte.
- 6:52Speaker 1: She's hosting a June teenth celebration alongside her activism co
- 6:56Speaker 1: founder Cure West and Actually Curious. It's a work show
- 7:00Speaker 1: that combines a boxing inspired workout with anti racism education,
- 7:04Speaker 1: as well as a mindfulness practice and journaling exercises to
- 7:09Speaker 1: help you strengthen your empathy, muscles and resilience. Also need
- 7:13Speaker 1: to throw this into the world. If you haven't signed
- 7:16Speaker 1: up for Tailor's anti racism newsletter yet, I cannot recommend
- 7:20Speaker 1: it enough. Read Sidelined, Sports, Culture and Being a Woman
- 7:25Speaker 1: in America. Now, this is a book that is not
- 7:27Speaker 1: only empowering, but it's seriously a call to action. Sports
- 7:31Speaker 1: journalist Julie Decarro balances candidate interviews, personal anecdotes, and deep
- 7:36Speaker 1: research to explore what America can do to give women
- 7:39Speaker 1: a fair and competitive playing field in sports and beyond.
- 7:43Speaker 1: The premise excites me, so I'm really looking forward to
- 7:46Speaker 1: scooping up a hard copy this weekend. Watch Human The
- 7:51Speaker 1: World Within on Netflix. I got the first episode of
- 7:54Speaker 1: this new series a few nights ago. In it is
- 7:56Speaker 1: so fascinating. It dives into a ton of science and
- 8:00Speaker 1: captivating stories about the incredible.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Workings of the human body.
- 8:07Speaker 1: I'm talking like from power and flexibility to how the
- 8:10Speaker 1: gut processes the fuel in our bodies that we need
- 8:13Speaker 1: to thrive. Also like the heart's capability of powering through
- 8:17Speaker 1: extreme physical and emotional challenges. Like I love this feeling amazed,
- 8:22Speaker 1: You've got to check it out.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Also another worthy watch, The Weight of Gold.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I watched this on the plane earlier this week coming
- 8:30Speaker 1: back from Miami, and wow, I believe it came out
- 8:33Speaker 1: maybe last year, but the documentary examines the widespread mental
- 8:38Speaker 1: health issues among Olympic athletes. And let me tell you,
- 8:42Speaker 1: this conversation is very, very important. Hearing athletes like Lolo
- 8:47Speaker 1: Jones and Michael Phelips talking about how they were made
- 8:49Speaker 1: to feel like they weren't allowed to be not okay
- 8:52Speaker 1: because they were such quote unquote superior humans. This is
- 8:57Speaker 1: we've got to talk about this stuff. Definitely, definitely give
- 8:59Speaker 1: it a watch. And last I do want to direct
- 9:02Speaker 1: you back over to the Weekly Hurdle newsletter again. The
- 9:05Speaker 1: link is in the show notes one more time because
- 9:06Speaker 1: I have been getting so many questions on Instagram about
- 9:09Speaker 1: ideal running shorts, and I have got a ton of
- 9:14Speaker 1: recommendations in there for you with links to buy. Now
- 9:19Speaker 1: a listener question.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Hi, Emily, I noticed the other day on Instagram, when
- 9:24Speaker 3: answering listener questions that you said you're good but not great,
- 9:28Speaker 3: which I totally appreciated the transparency because sometimes when people
- 9:32Speaker 3: ask how are you, it's hard to tell people the
- 9:34Speaker 3: truth like that. So my question is, can you talk
- 9:38Speaker 3: about what you do in those moments and then how
- 9:41Speaker 3: you get back to a more positive mindset. Thanks.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Wow, love love this attention to detail. Okay, so I
- 9:50Speaker 1: actually just mentioned that documentary The Weight of Gold, and
- 9:54Speaker 1: my transparency came from watching that in that I think
- 9:59Speaker 1: all too often and we feel guilty for not being
- 10:03Speaker 1: absolutely great. I talk to you all about how I'm
- 10:07Speaker 1: excited to offload some of this responsibility, but I'd be
- 10:10Speaker 1: remiss if I didn't admit that all this responsibility has certainly.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Been getting to me a little bit.
- 10:16Speaker 1: And so that is a big part of the reason
- 10:20Speaker 1: why I'm good and not great. I'm good right now
- 10:24Speaker 1: because I am grateful for my circumstances. I am grateful
- 10:28Speaker 1: for the work. I am so thankful for so many
- 10:31Speaker 1: amazing things in my life. But there are some things
- 10:35Speaker 1: in my life that just don't feel stellar, and so
- 10:40Speaker 1: I find it to be my responsibility to be upfront
- 10:44Speaker 1: about that because I believe that when we are open
- 10:47Speaker 1: and honest about our mental health, then we have an
- 10:51Speaker 1: opportunity to cultivate conversation with one another that empowers us
- 10:56Speaker 1: to be our authentic and true selves. We owe it
- 10:59Speaker 1: to one another. I get it. It's not always easy.
- 11:04Speaker 1: To be open, to be honest, to be upfront about
- 11:07Speaker 1: where you're at, and it can be scary to be vulnerable,
- 11:11Speaker 1: but I want you to know, as a member of
- 11:13Speaker 1: this community that you have an opportunity to be open
- 11:17Speaker 1: and honest with one another. If you're not a member
- 11:20Speaker 1: yet of the Super Secret Hurdler's Facebook group, that's a
- 11:23Speaker 1: great place to start.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I highly encourage you to head in over there.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Also, I mentioned this on socializing the other day, but
- 11:29Speaker 1: my dms have just been absolutely bogged down lately. So
- 11:33Speaker 1: if you ever have something that's super important, if you
- 11:36Speaker 1: need to talk, feel free to reach out to me personally.
- 11:38Speaker 1: My email is Emily at hurdle dot us. One thing
- 11:42Speaker 1: I'll say to you on the question how do I
- 11:45Speaker 1: find the good is that you've got to consciously make.
- 11:47Speaker 2: That effort right.
- 11:49Speaker 1: You have to pause with intention and do an inventory
- 11:53Speaker 1: about the things in your life that you're thankful for,
- 11:56Speaker 1: that you're grateful for, and it doesn't need to.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Be the biggest thing. It can be the smallest thing.
- 12:01Speaker 1: I like the way that my face looks in these glasses,
- 12:04Speaker 1: or I'm thankful for the opportunity to take a nice
- 12:08Speaker 1: walk in the afternoon, whatever it is be intentional about
- 12:14Speaker 1: making time to point those out, and that will help
- 12:17Speaker 1: you be good when things don't feel great.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Thanks for that question.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Make sure you're following along with the show over at
- 12:24Speaker 1: Hurdle Podcast. I'm on Instagram over at Emily a Body,
- 12:28Speaker 1: Another hurdle conquered.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time.
