- 0:02Speaker 1: It's the Craig Wait Show with the voice of the
- 0:05Texas Longhords in Hall of Fame Broadcasting.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Craig.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Here in a Long Oorons Monday. You know how we
- 0:19said before the start of the season that on Long
- 0:22worns Mondays we were going to give away tickets to
- 0:26games of that week home games, home games.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Uh, that'll be the case again next Monday.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Now not giving away tickets for Texas, are you because
- 0:36Texas is the visiting team. It's they're not even the
- 0:39designated home team for the game. But next Monday, Next Monday,
- 0:44be ready for this. We are going to have a
- 0:47pair of tickets to give away for the Georgia game.
- 0:50We will give away a pair of tickets for the
- 0:53game with Georgia, which we now know. We'll have a
- 0:56six thirty pm kickoff. It's an evening kick here between
- 1:01Texas and Georgia, which obviously means our coverage on the
- 1:06Zone will begin at three thirty that afternoon with Cam
- 1:11and Mike hardboll Harge and Mark Henry from the wind
- 1:16Chips Circle area. They hook them hang out there on
- 1:19Bevo Boulevard. That's a three point thirty Long Worn's game
- 1:24day Airtime Network pregame at five thirty to kick off
- 1:27at six thirty Texas and Georgia, and a week from
- 1:30the day we will have tickets to give away. But
- 1:35this is Texas ou Week and there's plenty to discuss.
- 1:38At his news conference earlier, they heard live here on
- 1:41sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone, Long Horn's head
- 1:43coach Steve Sarkisian addressed the media, talked about his team,
- 1:46addressed the questions pretty much all the ones you could
- 1:50probably think of as they were pertinent to this week's game.
- 1:53So let's start it off at sarks opening thoughts already.
- 1:58Speaker 3: First of all, the bye was good for us. You know,
- 2:02I think as we know, as you play five games
- 2:05into a season and you you know, you have training camp,
- 2:09you know, I think it was needed for us, and
- 2:11I think it paid dividends. You know, I think we
- 2:12we came back refreshed today. You know, we have some
- 2:16guys that were nicked up that needed to get healthy,
- 2:18but I think everybody, coaches included, needed a little bit
- 2:20of a reset, needed a little bit of a refresh.
- 2:23It was great to get recruiting on Friday, but more importantly,
- 2:27I think everybody kind of getting off their feet enjoying
- 2:29college football this weekend, which was a which was a
- 2:32heck of a weekend to be a fan, and then
- 2:35coming back today ready to work. Naturally, this is a
- 2:38anytime you have a rivalry game like this Red River rivalry,
- 2:41in my opinion, you know, as you guys know how
- 2:43I feel about this game. It's one that's very special
- 2:46and one that you know you were humbled and honored
- 2:48to be part of. To be part of the history
- 2:50of this game, and to think this is the one
- 2:53hundred and twentieth time Texas and know you have played
- 2:56is pretty fascinating and to be part of it, like
- 2:59I said, is special. Our preparation is really critical this
- 3:03week as we get ready to play a very talented
- 3:07football team. You know, coach Fedimal has done a really
- 3:10nice job. They play excellent defense. You know, they do
- 3:14a really good job of getting to the quarterback. They
- 3:16do a great job of creating turnovers. They found they
- 3:19found a niche now offensively with Hawkins at quarterback to
- 3:22create those explosive plays and so poise a lot of
- 3:25a lot of issues that we have to prepare for,
- 3:28and like I said, it should be a great day
- 3:29for college football and one that, like I said, we're
- 3:32fortunate to be part of this game.
- 3:33Speaker 1: That was the opening statement. Now, with regard to questions,
- 3:36the first question kind of surprised me. It wasn't about
- 3:40Quinn viewers availability. It wasn't It was about the continuity
- 3:45of what has happened with his offensive line and what they've.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Done, And that was the question, the first question that
- 3:50went to start.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I think the offensive line play, continuity, communication is all critical,
- 3:58and I think we've learned a couple of lessons over
- 4:01the years of being part of this game. Uh, you know,
- 4:03our first year, I felt like we got a little overwhelmed,
- 4:06especially when we were in their end of the field
- 4:08and we had some false starts and some miscommunication and
- 4:11gave up some sacks.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You know.
- 4:12Speaker 3: I think last year we felt that we felt the
- 4:14brunt of it when Jake got hurt I think maybe
- 4:17the second or third play of the game. And now
- 4:19you're playing with Connor robertson a backup and nothing against Connor,
- 4:22but you're prepping one week where your veterans starting center
- 4:24and then you adjust. So I do think continuity is critical,
- 4:28and I think experience is critical and We're fortunate, like
- 4:31I said, this is one of those years where we've
- 4:33got a lot of continuity. We've we've you know, we've
- 4:36got a really veteran center to communicate. We've got guys
- 4:39who've played a lot of football. The one guy who
- 4:42didn't play a lot of football coming into the season
- 4:44has grown exponentially throughout the season and Cam Williams.
- 4:47Speaker 4: So we're fortunate that way.
- 4:49Speaker 3: But control in the line of scrimmage is going to
- 4:51be big in this game, like it is in every game,
- 4:53but it's really big in this game. These you know,
- 4:55oh You's got a very good defensive front. They're very active,
- 4:58and coach Venables does really not job of moving them
- 5:01and putting them in position to be successful. So should
- 5:03be a great challenge for us upfront on the offensive
- 5:05line and tight ends for that matter.
- 5:07Speaker 1: All right, all right, Next up, did come the obvious
- 5:10question update on quinn yours?
- 5:12Speaker 2: Might he be available?
- 5:13Speaker 1: Might he be ready to go on Saturday against Oklahoma?
- 5:17Speaker 2: The status and for.
- 5:18Speaker 1: That matter, he was also asked how comfortable is he in,
- 5:25you know, staying if he has to use arch manning
- 5:30in the game, if for whatever reason Quinn can't go
- 5:33or starts the game but then can't finish the game
- 5:37due to whatever reason, and Stark had the ready response.
- 5:40Speaker 3: You know, I think a couple of things. One, you know,
- 5:42Quinn worked last week for three practices. He practiced again today.
- 5:47I thought he looked good coming off the bye. I
- 5:49think if anybody benefited from the time off, it was
- 5:51probably him. You know, we're going to monitor him daily
- 5:55just to kind of see how he continues to progress.
- 5:58But I feel good about if how we was today.
- 6:00I feel good about him going Saturday, but that remains
- 6:02to be seen. And I have no hesitation with Arts
- 6:04going in the game. I think he's proven that to
- 6:06us over two and a half games of football that
- 6:08he's really played in and competed in, that he can
- 6:11run our offense and he can be successful. And so,
- 6:14like I said, we're like I talked about the offensive line.
- 6:17You know, we're fortunate to have to be in the
- 6:19position that we're in, to have two quality players at
- 6:22the quarterback position that we have confidence in and that
- 6:25their teammates have confidence in.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And just to be sure that everybody understands exactly what
- 6:31Sarker is saying. If the game was today, could Quinn
- 6:34go if we had to play today, sure, But again
- 6:36that's why it's important that we monitor him kind of
- 6:39daily because I want to see how he responds to
- 6:43extended work and what that looks like to make sure
- 6:46that he's as healthy.
- 6:47Speaker 4: As he can be to perform.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Now, we all saw what happened over the weekend in
- 6:52college football, and that we mentioned at the top of
- 6:55the program. We'll get into greater detail on it a
- 6:57little bit, but was asked if there were lessons to
- 7:03be gleaned from those ranked teams who fell and the
- 7:09other teams rising up of being specifically in the SEC
- 7:13with Vanderbilt in Arkansas getting those wins over two teams
- 7:17ranked in the top five, first time ever Vanderbilt's beaten
- 7:20a top five ranked team, let alone the number one
- 7:23team in the country. It was the first win over
- 7:26Alabama since nineteen eighty four, forty years, and it was
- 7:33the first time they'd beaten him in Nashville since nineteen
- 7:35seventy six. So they knocked off number one, Arkansas knocked
- 7:40off Tennessee, and so sark was asked, are there lessons
- 7:44that he would pass along to his guys to be
- 7:47taken from.
- 7:47Speaker 3: This, Well, you know I touched on this earlier in
- 7:50the season and probably holds true now more than ever.
- 7:54Everybody talked about, you know, what is it going to
- 7:56take in the SEC in the Southeastern Conference, And I
- 7:59think the natural ants or is oh the physicality and
- 8:01the toll that it takes at the line of scrimmage
- 8:03on you.
- 8:04Speaker 4: I think what the SEC does.
- 8:05Speaker 3: It taxes you in a way from a mental intensity
- 8:11that you have to prepare every week like it's a
- 8:14championship game every Saturday, and from top to bottom in
- 8:17this conference, anybody can beat anybody. And I think that
- 8:21we learned that this weekend, and so the value for
- 8:25me is that it just was able to reinforce a
- 8:27lot of the things we've been talking about as a team.
- 8:30And anytime you have living examples for young people especially,
- 8:35I think it's helpful that they can see and understand
- 8:37why our messaging is what it is.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Okay, going back to the quarterback thing, Sark was then asked.
- 8:47Speaker 2: About his.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Choice of words and phrases in how he describes who
- 8:56his quarterbacks are and where their place is in it.
- 9:00In other words, that Quinn yours is QB one, that
- 9:03he is the number one quarterback, and arch Banding is
- 9:05the number two, And he was asked, is that just
- 9:10something that he's saying and going along? Is he is
- 9:12he comfortable in talking about it like that, and so
- 9:16he was asked for how he's wording all this.
- 9:20Speaker 3: It's just me being honest. I sleep better when i'm honest,
- 9:23So I'm just being honest. I mean, that's how I
- 9:27genuinely feel. You know, Quinn has earned and deserved that
- 9:31right to be our starting quarterback.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Arches continue to work.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Really hard, and like I said, we're we're fortunate to
- 9:37have him and the player that he is and the
- 9:40leader that he is as well. It's a it's a
- 9:42very fortunate situation that we're in that that Again, it
- 9:45doesn't happen very often the way that it does, but
- 9:48we happen to be in that position right now.
- 9:50Speaker 4: And so but but I speak to it like I
- 9:52would anything else.
- 9:53Speaker 3: It's you know, you know, I try to be very
- 9:55matter of fact with y'all, so I don't I don't
- 9:58feel like I'm I'm trying to send messages or mixed
- 10:01messages or anything.
- 10:02Speaker 4: It's just that's how I feel.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Okay, all right, So that and uh uh, here's another
- 10:07one from start talking about Brent Venables, the head coach
- 10:11at Oklahoma. Remember, Venables was every bit the defensive specialist
- 10:16that Sark has been on the offensive, signing with quarterbacks.
- 10:20So he's asked what he has seen out of this
- 10:22Brent Venables coach defense.
- 10:25Speaker 3: You know, I want I have a ton of respect
- 10:27for coach Venables. You know, he's a tremendous defensive coach
- 10:30and that's been throughout time right going all the way
- 10:33back to Kansas State, and then you know what he
- 10:35did at Clemson and OU and now being the head
- 10:37coach at OU.
- 10:39Speaker 4: And you know, like us, we take a lot of pride.
- 10:42Speaker 3: If we get two weeks to prepare offense, we feel
- 10:44pretty good that we're gonna put together a great game
- 10:46plan and our guys can execute it. I feel the
- 10:49same way about coach Venables on the defensive side. You
- 10:51give him two weeks, they're gonna have a really good
- 10:53defensive plan and there are guys will be dialed in
- 10:55and and that's when it comes down to execution. That's
- 10:58when it comes down to some in game of ut
- 11:00to adjust to whatever they're doing.
- 11:03Speaker 4: But knowing that, you.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Know, I think one of the things coming out of
- 11:07really the last couple of years is you know, what's
- 11:10on tape might not necessarily be what we're going to get,
- 11:12and so we've got to do a great job in
- 11:15game of adjusting, especially early on, to whatever they present
- 11:19to us.
- 11:20Speaker 4: I think one thing we've learned.
- 11:21Speaker 3: This season is that, you know, the tablets or the
- 11:24iPads and the video on the sidelines has been really helpful,
- 11:27uh to communicate to our players and to show them
- 11:30so that we can make those adjustments even quicker. And
- 11:32I think this weekend that that's going to be that's
- 11:34gonna be important as.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Well interesting because we hadn't heard talk that much about
- 11:38the tablets and things of that nature, so it is
- 11:39good to hear that it is helping them out and
- 11:42making a difference. A couple of questions on our text line.
- 11:45If you'd like to text the program really easy to do.
- 11:47All you have to do is text the word Texas
- 11:49follow by your question or comment to eight one five
- 11:53three zero. Again, you text the word Texas follow by
- 11:56your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
- 11:58Standard messaging and data rates may apply. Somebody said, when
- 12:01was the last time texas Texas A and M and
- 12:03Texas Tech. We're all four and one, are better through
- 12:05five weeks to come back and take a look at
- 12:07that and see if we can find that out. And
- 12:08then our man CB says, you know when I said
- 12:10say it slowly carefully, red River rivalry, CB says, you
- 12:15mean the web we of rivalry. That's how we spelled it.
- 12:18It will always be the Red River Shootout for me,
- 12:20said CB. You know me, I like to call it
- 12:22the State Fair Street Fight, but it is the red River, right,
- 12:26It's the all state Red River Rivalry.
- 12:29Speaker 2: That's how it is positioned there.
- 12:31Speaker 4: All right.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Up next, we bring you Inconceivable. Hey, by the way,
- 12:35well you're more from start coming up to three o'clock hour,
- 12:38four o'clock hour as well, and in the four o'clock hour,
- 12:41we check in with Gene Watson, our MLB insider, his
- 12:44thoughts on the just completed Wildcard series and.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Where the division series are right now.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Both the Nation League series are game apiece, American League
- 12:52starting up again here before the top of the hour,
- 12:56and we'll check in with Gino for his thoughts on
- 12:59the postseason for baseball. All that and more when we
- 13:02continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone of
- 13:04the iHeartRadio app,
