Latest / Rusty's Garage / Matt Mingay (Part 2)
Transcript
- 0:02A listener production.
- 0:19G'day, it's Rusty here, getting ready for the second lap of my podcast with stuntman and racer Matt Mingay.
- 0:26If you haven't already, make sure you check out part one, which covers his early years, the learnings, the bikes and some broken bones.
- 0:34But it was nothing until a life-changing incident at Belle Isle in Detroit in 2016.
- 0:42Is it hard to talk about still?
- 0:43No.
- 0:44No, not at all.
- 0:44No, I don't find a problem talking about it.
- 0:46I suppose the hardest time I have troubles dealing with it ever, I don't have a problem dealing with one little bit, except for one of my little boys involved.
- 0:54And when he's subject to my little boy dealing with it and dealing with how sad he was and how upset he was about it, that hits home to me.
- 1:02It hurts me.
- 1:02It becomes real then.
- 1:03Yeah, it hits home.
- 1:05So you talked about the extent of the damage before, particularly to your jaw and things like that.
- 1:11I've known you for a while, mate.
- 1:12You know, you're this character that's full of life, you know, wild side to you, gregarious kind of thing.
- 1:20Now, all of a sudden, it's been...
- 1:22That's been life-changing, mate.
- 1:24How hard was that to deal with at the time that it would be perhaps more difficult to talk or that, you know, maybe it might change the shape of your face?
- 1:30How difficult was that to come to terms with?
- 1:32Yeah, well, definitely.
- 1:33I mean, it's definitely changed the shape of my face.
- 1:36I've got a massive big draw on me now.
- 1:38I've got a thing called Jusathia.
- 1:40So not only have I...
- 1:42Although my teeth are missing on my mouth, that's why I have a speech impediment.
- 1:46But I think called dysarthia, which is because of my brain injury, is affecting my right hand side of my body.
- 1:52So my right hand side of my tongue is a bit numb, that's why I talk weird.
- 1:56So yeah, it certainly was a setback.
- 1:58The hardest thing for me to do was the people around me, my wife especially, she went through hell and back, virtually looking after me the whole time, and my little boy, and we were trying for a baby at the time, and it wasn't until I virtually came to America my wife announced to me she was pregnant.
- 2:22And because of all the stress, we lost that baby.
- 2:26So as you can imagine, that was pretty hard as well.
- 2:29Very, very.
- 2:31Yeah, so since then we've had a beautiful little girl.
- 2:34Yeah, we did.
- 2:34And there's our email name Danger.
- 2:36Is that right?
- 2:39How fitting, how fitting.
- 2:42Hello, she's... Is she Daddy's girl not to go anywhere near motorbikes or what's that like?
- 2:46Oh, no, no.
- 2:46She gets her first birthday, she'll be 50.
- 2:4850.
- 2:51And she's the most daring, courageous little no-fear little girl I've ever met.
- 2:55It's kind of scary.
- 2:57Wonderful support from your wife, mate.
- 2:59That must have been enormously hard for her to see you.
- 3:02Yeah, it was.
- 3:03Absolutely.
- 3:05I think about it every now and again.
- 3:07Even when she talks about it, she tries not to talk about it too much to me because she knows it's upsetting to me to know what she's been through.
- 3:13But the support from her has been crazy, unbelievable.
- 3:17Your mum and dad were horrified at the thought of you doing stunts.
- 3:22Now you've had this big incident.
- 3:24Did you think at some point, that's it, I can't do this anymore?
- 3:30Or were you still as determined as ever to come back from?
- 3:33Oh, never.
- 3:34Never, ever have a doubt in my mind that I was going to come back to it.
- 3:37I don't doubt in the world.
- 3:39I remember I was in hospital for 13 weeks and I was home for two weeks and I was getting my Harley something bike ready and putting it back in my car and my wife goes, what are you doing?
- 3:48So I'm going for a ride.
- 3:50She says, you can't.
- 3:51I'm like, it says who?
- 3:54She said, you can't physically do it.
- 3:56I said, well, watch me do it, and then you tell me I can't do it.
- 3:59And she had to come and watch me practice two weeks after.
- 4:02And sure enough, I did crash.
- 4:04Okay.
- 4:07So it wasn't into good books by no means.
- 4:11But, yeah, I said it to a lot of people.
- 4:15People said, what are you going to do now?
- 4:17I'm like, what do you mean what I'm going to do now?
- 4:20Am I going to work at Macca's or work at Bunnings or something?
- 4:22Are you joking me?
- 4:23I'm going to keep doing what I do.
- 4:24I'm going to do it even better than I ever have and faster and crazy than I ever have.
- 4:29That's what I do.
- 4:29That's what I do for a living.
- 4:30I love it.
- 4:31I love my fans.
- 4:32I love the passion of my fans.
- 4:34I'll never let them down for the longer I live.
- 4:36So it's been good tonic then, has it?
- 4:38Yeah, well, it has.
- 4:41My fan base has grown a hell of a lot.
- 4:43And, you know, I never let anyone down, ever.
- 4:47I try not to.
- 4:49I train my butt off, try and keep fit, do what I do.
- 4:52And, yeah, it's working well for me.
- 4:54How good was that sensation to either get back on the bike or to get behind the wheel again?
- 4:59How good did that feel?
- 5:01Yeah, it was good.
- 5:02It was very hard.
- 5:04It wasn't just up on the back of the bike, back in the swing of things again.
- 5:08I virtually had to learn a lot of things over again.
- 5:12And at the time, my disability was more right in size down.
- 5:17Yes.
- 5:17That's why I've got a permanent limp now.
- 5:20And so trying to do throttle control and stuff like that is pretty hard.
- 5:26Was that practice again?
- 5:27You just had to go and practice, relearn?
- 5:28Yeah, absolutely.
- 5:29I had to practice like every day for like two, three months.
- 5:33So I crashed in June and my first show back was Adelaide 500 in March.
- 5:40That's nuts.
- 5:41Less than a year.
- 5:42Yeah, it was only six months.
- 5:43Wow.
- 5:44Yeah, six months, and for about four of those months, I was trained, trained, trained, trained, trained.
- 5:50There's no way I was going to come here and watch a show, and there's no way I was going to let my fans down, and there's no way I was going to crash either.
- 5:58I thought, if I crash, I'm going to be the biggest dickhead in the world.
- 6:03What was more satisfying?
- 6:08Was it... Because you'd grown up on two wheels, but there's still a lot of four-wheel element.
- 6:12Obviously, the crash had been in a truck, in a stadium super truck.
- 6:16So was it just satisfying to get back on the bike again?
- 6:19What was the one that is sort of...
- 6:21It's funny you mention that, because my age, I've been steering towards the car, over the bike, thinking, oh, I'm going to retire with the bike, going to get off the bike.
- 6:30So I've got a saying, a theory in life, with age comes a cage.
- 6:35Okay.
- 6:35What a load of shit that is.
- 6:38Well, I've had totally my biggest life-threatening crash within a car.
- 6:44Yeah.
- 6:45You know, go figure.
- 6:46Yeah.
- 6:46Yeah.
- 6:47So the reaction from the sport when you came back, the constituents that you know here in the paddock, you've got lots of friends here.
- 6:55What was that like?
- 6:56It was hard.
- 6:57I was more so trying to convince him I was back.
- 7:00Because a lot of people who saw me going, oh, when are you back?
- 7:03I'm like, I'm back.
- 7:04No, when are you riding again?
- 7:05I'm like, I'm riding.
- 7:07Oh, so when are you doing stunts again?
- 7:09I'm fucking doing my stunts now.
- 7:12So people couldn't believe I was back.
- 7:13I've seen all the reports and reading all the reports and how I was, you know, in a pretty bad way.
- 7:20They couldn't believe I was back on target to do what I do.
- 7:24When people have a brain injury, they often talk about, you know, sometimes it might change your personality or it might, other things like that, that it's changed.
- 7:33I mean, you've talked about the physical stuff, but what about, you know, the either personality or emotional stuff?
- 7:40Not really.
- 7:40I take life a hell of a lot more granted.
- 7:43Do you?
- 7:43Yeah, yeah.
- 7:45I love my family twice as much as I did before.
- 7:48And I make sure my family comes first, simple as that.
- 7:54No yes or buts.
- 7:55Yeah, more so I just take life for granted a bit better.
- 8:02like Mad Mike, who we brought up before, whose son looks like following in his footsteps, your young bloke looks like doing what Dad's into.
- 8:09How's all that?
- 8:10Oh.
- 8:12Well, he's living up to his name.
- 8:14His name's Maddox, middle-amaged evil, like I mentioned before.
- 8:18He's been performing with me for two and a half years now, and he drives his son's bike, his drift car, and his little trophy car, which is a jump track.
- 8:28And we do quite...
- 8:30quite a few Royal Shows together.
- 8:31For example, next weekend, this Newcastle Royal Show we're doing.
- 8:35Me and him in both our trucks.
- 8:37We've got two big steel rams and we have shootouts and it's best of the three races.
- 8:44And that little bugger, little bugger flogs his dad.
- 8:49And the only way I could beat it was if I'd cheat.
- 8:52And the crowd could see that.
- 8:54And because there's a little, anyone knows it's a trove car, so a little miniature trove truck, like a super truck miniature with a little 450 dirt bike engine.
- 9:04And because it's so light and small, it goes like a stink.
- 9:07And of course, I've got a big truck and a little tire that's only about 150 metres.
- 9:10I'm lucky to get in the second gear.
- 9:13So he flogs me and boy is he rubbing my face.
- 9:16Oh yeah, he's a true mingay.
- 9:19Is there an element of give and take?
- 9:22Okay, you've got to do your homework first before you go out and play.
- 9:25What's that like?
- 9:26No, because I'm separated from his mum.
- 9:29When he comes to dad, dad says it's playtime.
- 9:34As you and I sit here, it's a fantastic element to the, you know, a positive bookend to the story of just recounted about the injury and about the crash.
- 9:46You are back here in Adelaide racing a stadium truck for the first time.
- 9:53How does that feel?
- 9:54It's day one of having got behind the wheel of it again.
- 9:57What are the emotions from all that?
- 9:59Yeah, certainly a tough one.
- 10:00I've been doing it for 23 years, like I mentioned, and I don't get nervous anymore.
- 10:06I mean, what I do for a living, I actually love what I do, but I don't get nervous.
- 10:10I have a bit of fun out there, whether it be on my Harley Sun bike or my Camaro drift car or my truck doing shows.
- 10:16It's just great fun.
- 10:17I don't get nervous.
- 10:18But today racing...
- 10:22practicing for the first time at SSC, I was nervous.
- 10:25I was nervous, my brother's here, and he goes, I can tell you I'm nervous, I am.
- 10:29He goes, I've never seen this side of you before.
- 10:32I said, I know, right?
- 10:33So I got my first session over from Dunworth and took a huge weight off my shoulders, a big sigh of relief, and my next session, I did a huge better, a couple of seconds faster, and I was only my second session, so,
- 10:48Like, it was a big sigh of relief.
- 10:49Just, you get it out of the way.
- 10:51And my biggest problem so far is getting my Cams losses back.
- 10:57Cams has been absolutely thorough with what they do and props to them.
- 11:02Because they could have been a veggie and they could have given me a bag, could have been their fault.
- 11:06So what they've tested, put them through has been so in-depth.
- 11:10Rigorous.
- 11:10It's so rigorous and crazy.
- 11:12Like I had to do a medical test, I had to do a CT brain scan, an MRI brain scan, and the hardest one I had to do, I had to do a psychological brain test, which goes for six hours.
- 11:22That's often a fair thought of what they've done.
- 11:24That in itself must make it even more rewarding to get behind the wheel of that truck.
- 11:28It's...
- 11:30Blue and yellow colours, Hot Wheels backing.
- 11:33It's unmistakably you, mate.
- 11:35Tell people that are listening who have not seen these things before.
- 11:38I mean, these are trucks that are V8 powered, a ute, overgrown suspension.
- 11:45They can more or less tackle just about any kind of different terrain.
- 11:49And you're racing them around the street circuit here over man-made jumps.
- 11:53Yeah, absolutely.
- 11:54I mean, they come to fruition in 2014, I think.
- 11:59And, like I said, unbelievable.
- 12:02They're a little tiny truck with a big V8 in it, lightweight, huge, huge jumps.
- 12:07And I think there's five jumps per lap.
- 12:10And Robert Gordon's just – he's brain power.
- 12:14He's done magic things for these things.
- 12:16And whatever damages you do to it, he fixes it.
- 12:20So you can virtually have a smash-up derby out there and not give a rat's arse about your truck.
- 12:25It's like –
- 12:26And he'll fix it for you.
- 12:28So it's really good.
- 12:29He's talking there about Robbie Gordon, who's raced successfully in IndyCar, NASCAR, things like Baja and Dakar.
- 12:37He's a real machine when it comes to running the sport or that particular championship.
- 12:40He's pretty handy in them as well.
- 12:42So they're V8 powered.
- 12:43We've covered that part of it.
- 12:45The commentators use a line which I quite like, which is, three wheelings, a good feeling.
- 12:50Because to attack it, you actually have to kick the front wheels up, either left or right, depending upon how you're going on a particular corner or even heading into a jump, don't you?
- 13:02Yeah, so where it is, the only of the three wheels are in the left-hand corner is because of the engine torque.
- 13:07Okay.
- 13:08in the right-hand corners, it won't go on three wheels, it'll just slide.
- 13:11So when you go around the left-hand corner, you want it on three wheels because you get traction.
- 13:14If it's not on three wheels, you're sliding in the back end.
- 13:17So you want it on the left front wheel as high as you can get it because there's the most amount of traction you can get.
- 13:21So it looks like quite often because it's left-hand drive going around the left-hand corner, you can't see a bloody thing.
- 13:27You cannot see because all you can see is bonnet.
- 13:30So you're just hoping like hell the guy in front keeps going.
- 13:34You may not remember this.
- 13:35Troy Bayless used to run an event at Taree in sort of mid-north coast of New South Wales.
- 13:40It was for dirt bike racing.
- 13:43And one particular year, you took a truck there and you were doing some demo stuff and you threw me a helmet and you said, come for a lap, come for a ride.
- 13:52It's the only time I've ever been in a car that's launched or jumped something.
- 13:56I still cannot get over to this day the sensation.
- 13:59What I want you to try and tell the people listening to the podcast is...
- 14:05What happens here?
- 14:06Because there's an element of lining it up for the jump, gassing it at a certain point.
- 14:10Correct me if I'm wrong, you're even given a bit of a rev mid-air, don't you?
- 14:13Like a motocross bike and things like that, do you?
- 14:15No, not really, no.
- 14:18You have to make sure your power's on the ramp.
- 14:20It doesn't matter if you're not too fast for the ramp or not.
- 14:22You have to power up because the back wheel gives it power to lift the front end up.
- 14:28If it doesn't do that, it'll nosedive big time.
- 14:31And the faster you go, the more it'll nosedive.
- 14:33So, yeah, I mean, I think we're clocked at 150km now, clocking hitting the ramps, so it's pretty fast, pretty fast.
- 14:42So pretty in-depth.
- 14:44If it lands wrong, you know about it.
- 14:45Robbie and his team go through a thing where they go, okay, we need the ramp set at this height, they've got to be placed in this spot, and there's an element of, I mean, they've been here to Adelaide before, so I'm sure a lot of it comes with that prior experience, but it's also their experience with the category and the cars and what they need to do, isn't it?
- 15:03Not really, no.
- 15:04No, not at all.
- 15:05The ramps are all set height, kind of the same height everywhere you go.
- 15:08And now everyone on the drivers are experienced drivers, so it virtually says the ramps are here, here, here and here.
- 15:15Go for it.
- 15:16See you later.
- 15:16Amazing.
- 15:17Yeah, so on your way.
- 15:18So like I said, today's two practice sessions.
- 15:21If you haven't got your eye in now, might as well not turn up.
- 15:25Yeah, forget it.
- 15:26Just describe the, you talked about kicking the left front before and things like that and how to attack the jump.
- 15:32What are you using when you're in the cockpit in terms of obviously steering, but are there other aspects to the driving?
- 15:40Absolutely.
- 15:40It's a three-speed auto, so you're virtually using second and third the whole time.
- 15:44Yeah.
- 15:44And you've got a hydraulic handbrake.
- 15:46Yeah.
- 15:46So when you go around a corner, if you get a slight bit of undersea, you instantly on the hydraulic handbrake and it digs the back end in, which puts weight on the front wheels.
- 15:55So you've actually, around every corner, you're covering the handbrake.
- 15:59So the second you get undersea, you pull on, lose your undersea.
- 16:03Quite often you hope you don't get undersea because it hits faster, obviously.
- 16:08So you're always covering the handbrake, so hope for the best.
- 16:12What's the perfect balance?
- 16:14Because circuit racing guys want to try and be smooth and precise, but these things have a lot of attitude, and the way Robbie attacks it sometimes, it's a joy to watch, mate, because it's 180 of what...
- 16:26You expect it in circuit racing terms in many ways, isn't it?
- 16:29Absolutely.
- 16:30What I love is that I've never raced a car in my life.
- 16:33And I got a wild card riding these in 2014.
- 16:38And my very first race, I got third place.
- 16:41So I beat various supercar drivers and ex-Formel 1 drivers and all these American guys who were experts for years.
- 16:49I was pretty over the moon.
- 16:51I've had two wins, one in Gold Coast, one in Sydney, and about four podiums in my career.
- 16:57So, yeah, I'm pretty impressed with that.
- 16:59I mean, playing with trucks, doing Royal Shows does help.
- 17:04Like I said, doing nothing with you does help.
- 17:09So the jumping aspect, I'm not scared one little bit of the jumping aspect, it's more so the road racing technique is the hardest part for me.
- 17:16Is that right?
- 17:17In launching off the jumps, do you have to remain, does your body have to remain supple or do you kind of tense up?
- 17:22How do you go when you attack the jump?
- 17:23Just make sure your head's on the back of the headrests.
- 17:26Because if you're leaning forward, you're going to be anxious about what's going on, your head, your chin will break down.
- 17:32So virtually every time you do a jump, you put your head straight back and back of the headrests.
- 17:48Stadium super trucks are powered by a 600 horsepower Chevrolet V8 engine, the 1300 kg trucks have a 3 speed transmission and can hit a top speed of 230 km per hour.
- 18:01And on the street courses, aluminium jumps are placed on the track.
- 18:05So pretty much it's like watching real life remote control cars.
- 18:10Let's talk about, to finish off here, some stuff that's close to your heart in terms of bikes and cars.
- 18:16Firstly, you mentioned the Harley before.
- 18:18Tell listeners about the Harley that you're currently using in some of the stunt displays and things like that.
- 18:24And is there another one at home that's a bit of a quiet, soft spot that you go for a ride in the hinterland with?
- 18:32No, it's the same one first, and it isn't.
- 18:34I don't have any bike, mainly because I've lost my licence 14 times.
- 18:41So I try not to ride on the road.
- 18:44I can't help but be an idiot.
- 18:45Yeah.
- 18:46When you went back to court on that sort of basis, did they sort of go, not you again?
- 18:51Or what happened?
- 18:52Yeah, what a bad spell.
- 18:53I've lost my license for many years.
- 18:56Oh, sorry.
- 18:57Lost my license for three years.
- 18:59I took my license off me because of my accident.
- 19:01Believe it or not.
- 19:02Because of my brain injury, I took my license off me.
- 19:05So I proved that I could drive.
- 19:06It was stupid.
- 19:07But anyway.
- 19:09But yeah, I lost my losses many times, just being a fool on a motorbike in a car and being a clown and so hence me not riding on the road very often anymore at all.
- 19:20Okay.
- 19:20The Harley is what and what have you done to it in terms of mods?
- 19:23So Harley's a Harley Sports 1200, fairly modified.
- 19:29I've got laced up with different wheels, different gearing, different engine gearing, twin brake twin disc front ends so I can...
- 19:37and use the front brakes, each better than standard.
- 19:39And to be honest, it's the most reliable stunt bike I've ever had.
- 19:44It's an absolute flogging day, noon, night, and it's had one rebuild in 10 years.
- 19:51So my old stunt bike, I'll rebuild it over two years.
- 19:56So it's pretty reliable.
- 19:58You rattled off some stuff about the Camaro.
- 20:00It's sitting out front.
- 20:01We're inside your transporter at the moment.
- 20:03It's parked out front.
- 20:04It's a bit of a specky thing for fans to come and check when it's on display.
- 20:10Tyres.
- 20:10When you come to a show like this, how long do the rears last?
- 20:14Yeah, I'm lucky these days.
- 20:16I explained the horsepower that the Camaro's put now is crazy horsepower.
- 20:19I'm drifting in top gear, six-gear drifting.
- 20:21So I'm lucky to get one lap for a brand new set of tyres.
- 20:25Oh, my God.
- 20:26If I get more than a lap, they say to me I've got two laps, I've got to make it last two laps, so I can drive a bit of a Nancy.
- 20:34If I've only got one lap, I'll make sure they come in bog-sock-balled.
- 20:39Yeah, so last year I went through 245 tyres.
- 20:43So, yeah, my car was 250, so I didn't match it, unfortunately.
- 20:52Yeah.
- 20:55This place, I can always remember Barry Sheen doing burnouts here.
- 20:58The fans love that stuff.
- 20:59And they love that with you too, mate, two or four wheel, don't they?
- 21:02Oh, Barry Sheen, yeah, it was great.
- 21:04He hopped down on some bike, I read it back in 2003 or 2004.
- 21:09I reckon that was played a number of times.
- 21:11I reckon he did it, it may have even been on the front straight here at Adelaide.
- 21:14Yeah, it could have been.
- 21:15It was either here or Bathurst, I can't remember.
- 21:16I can't remember, yeah, yeah.
- 21:18And he had no help but on, just the mic around his head, he jumped on the bike and did a big burn out in Pit Lane.
- 21:24Not out on the track, on Pit Lane on shed one.
- 21:28I was like, it was a telecast like he said.
- 21:32Did we get in trouble for that?
- 21:34My God, we got so much trouble for that.
- 21:36Oh, what do you reckon?
- 21:38I could just imagine him too back in the night, well, hey, Matt, give me the bike, will ya?
- 21:42Yeah, it was exactly that.
- 21:44Yeah, give me the bike, get off, give me a go, will ya?
- 21:48What about stuff that is still on the to-do list for you?
- 21:52Is there, I mean, you rattle off Guinness Records, we know some of the stunts that you've done over time, and we've just talked about you being back in a truck racing, which is terrific.
- 22:02What's on the unfinished business list for you?
- 22:05I don't know, mate.
- 22:06To be honest, a lot of the SSEs love doing that.
- 22:09I've got a docker coming out.
- 22:12Do you?
- 22:12Yeah, I've got a massive docker coming out.
- 22:13I've been working on docker for the last nine months.
- 22:17Don't give away too much, because it'd be nice for viewers to see that, but what's the sort of essence of it?
- 22:21No, it's mainly around my accident.
- 22:24My wife did the greatest thing of me while I was in hospital the whole time.
- 22:28She used a GoPro and filmed me.
- 22:29Yeah.
- 22:30And I've got some really, really gory unseen in-car footage of my actual crash.
- 22:35No one's ever seen before.
- 22:37Okay.
- 22:38And the broadcast footage of the crash that they didn't broadcast was too gory.
- 22:42Yeah.
- 22:43So I've got broadcast footage as well.
- 22:44Wow.
- 22:45um so yeah and it's all about my life what's gone on my life exactly what we've just gone through and lots of footage footage of my little boy and little girl and yeah so it's definitely a eye-opening for a lot of people when they want to know the ins and outs of my life that's for sure eye-opening for you too
- 23:04Yeah, it certainly brought quite a few memories.
- 23:10Thinking about trying to hustle up some old footage together and seeing some old footage, certainly brought the memory back together again.
- 23:18Where can people see this when it comes out?
- 23:20And have you got a working title that you can talk about yet?
- 23:22Yeah, it's called Challenge Accepted.
- 23:23Challenge Accepted.
- 23:24Challenge Accepted.
- 23:25It's due out in Easter at this age.
- 23:28I hope, fingers crossed, it still is because it's still got a fair way to go.
- 23:32Okay.
- 23:34I'm hoping to get on Netflix, Stan, Amazon.
- 23:38and Virgin Airlines.
- 23:40Good stuff.
- 23:41So keep an eye out for that searcher challenge accepted.
- 23:43Yeah, exactly.
- 23:44We're talking as we record this Easter 2022.
- 23:47So is there a bike for you that is dream bike to own?
- 23:53It's like one of those things like, hey, one day, maybe when the kids are growing up or something or other, is there one that you would love to have in the garage?
- 24:01Could it be maybe something that takes you back to your youth, one of those first bikes?
- 24:04What would be the Matt Mingay machine that you had to have?
- 24:08To be honest, not really, eh?
- 24:09Really?
- 24:09I've kind of gone off bikes quite a bit over the years.
- 24:13With my age, kind of progressed.
- 24:15And unfortunately, the Harley, I sort of love riding the Harley for my fans, but it's kind of a job now.
- 24:21Yeah.
- 24:22So I do what I do to keep them happy.
- 24:25And I'm insane beyond belief everywhere I go.
- 24:28But, you know, I don't, when I get home, I don't play with bikes.
- 24:31I don't want to play with bikes.
- 24:33I don't have anything to do with them.
- 24:34I do, on average, do 200 performances per year, between 25 and 30 shows, events per year, every year.
- 24:43So, people say to me, I'm drawing a variety this weekend, and I'm wigging off.
- 24:49Hell no.
- 24:51I don't want to touch a bike on my weekend off.
- 24:52I don't want to go near it.
- 24:53I want to spend it with my family, my little boy, my little girl, go do something that's not motorcycle or motor-related.
- 24:58You know, because, yeah, it is what it is, I suppose.
- 25:01Is that the life realisation, mate, that, you know, you talked before about not taking stuff for granted, and so when you are back from a race meeting like this, you do...
- 25:11want to be close to the fam and spend that time?
- 25:14I do.
- 25:14I do.
- 25:14I love being close to the family.
- 25:16By no means, I do boring stuff.
- 25:18I mean, I always go truck racing with my little boy and bike ride with my little boy and my little girl riding around in a pew.
- 25:24She's going to paddock, bashing with her.
- 25:26We've got two pluruses.
- 25:27She's absolutely addicted to the little pluruses.
- 25:31She sees a plurus, a little kid's plurus.
- 25:33I was our 170s.
- 25:35She goes and shakes the door flat out, looks at you shaking the door.
- 25:37We're going, we're going.
- 25:38Oh, you've got to go.
- 25:39If you're a guy, you're the meanest out in the world.
- 25:42Is the Camaro the dream car from a stunt point of view, or is there something that you've even learnt from that where you think, oh, you know, man, the next project, I want to build this or put this engine or, you know, is there another one of those?
- 25:56No, the Camaro is pretty awesome.
- 25:58It doesn't matter who sees it across the world, they're pretty blown away by it.
- 26:03The open strands actually kind of blows everyone away.
- 26:05If everyone gets a chance to have a look underneath it, they're pretty blown away.
- 26:08Like I said, running a NASCAR engine as well.
- 26:13There's not many things on the drift track to keep up with it, so it's pretty cool.
- 26:18Will you slow down?
- 26:19Is there any chance of you slowing down?
- 26:21I hope not.
- 26:23No, I hope not.
- 26:24I love what I do.
- 26:25My life loves what I do.
- 26:27To an extent.
- 26:31we entirely enjoy it keeping the fans happy our fan base is always going I wouldn't get it for the world Fantastic, final one for you if you could go on a road trip let's say it's a car you can have a sedan whatever you want to do embarrassing stories tell me an embarrassing story what have you got, this is good I text you have you got anything
- 27:00I repeat that, you texted me and I thought to myself, what's the dramatic story and they haven't told anyone?
- 27:04And I remember one, it was here.
- 27:06In Adelaide.
- 27:06It was in Adelaide, probably about 2005, 2006.
- 27:11And I was doing a big burnout on my motorbike, and I fast as hell, it was about 140km down, I slot lock to lock, and I high-sided it.
- 27:19A high side means when the bike goes completely sideways and I flipped it straight on the back.
- 27:24And I slipped about 50 metres down.
- 27:26And when I stopped sliding, I got dropped on my feet and I checked all my arms and legs.
- 27:30I was all in one piece.
- 27:31I was pre-wrapped.
- 27:32And the crowd was going berserk.
- 27:34Both bananas for me ran into my bike and I g-ed up the crowd.
- 27:38And to make a bit of laughter, I dropped an elbow on like a wrestling move on my bike.
- 27:43Like a wrestling move.
- 27:44As I dropped it on my bike, I felt this pop.
- 27:47I broke my elbow.
- 27:50So you survived?
- 27:52I survived.
- 27:53I survived.
- 27:53I dropped my elbow.
- 27:54My elbow hit the edge of the metal tank and just popped my elbow, broke my elbow.
- 27:59So I picked a bike up and waved the cow and went, oh, God!
- 28:03Went in and said, oh, a crash broke my elbow crashing.
- 28:07It was the show off of the photo.
- 28:10It was the show off.
- 28:12It wasn't to deal with the crash bottle of it.
- 28:16If you could go for a road trip, any car you like, let's say it's the Camaro and there's the four seats in the Camaro and you could fill it with any guest you like.
- 28:24Guests?
- 28:25Yeah, someone that maybe inspires you, that you look up to.
- 28:28It could be someone from family.
- 28:29Who would the guests be that you'd go on a road trip with and why?
- 28:33Oh, Crikey's a tough one.
- 28:34On the spot.
- 28:36Have there been heroes for you?
- 28:37I mean, you talked about Evel Knievel, obviously.
- 28:39Yeah, Evel Knievel, obviously he's a given, but he's dead now as well, so...
- 28:43Were you obsessed?
- 28:44Were you watching VHSs and everything?
- 28:46Yeah, I was.
- 28:47I read his books, two books of movies.
- 28:51Like I said, I got his tattoos on me.
- 28:54I named my kid after him.
- 28:58My wedding was in Vegas.
- 28:59My best man told me he pulled out an evil kaneer race that I had to work around for the whole night.
- 29:06As Eva Knievel.
- 29:07There's one.
- 29:08There's one.
- 29:08Let's say he was alive.
- 29:10It'd be cool to have him with you.
- 29:11I love The Rock.
- 29:12The Rock's a great attitude towards life.
- 29:15He's a very inspiring man.
- 29:17I suppose he's a superstar.
- 29:20I don't really know, but I'm on the spot there.
- 29:23They're a great combo though.
- 29:26Rock gets up at 4 in the morning and does training.
- 29:28I train, train, train, train.
- 29:30I mean I train my butt off all the time and if I feel like being inspired I look at his Instagram or Facebook because he's a pretty inspiring guy.
- 29:40Mate, your story is amazing.
- 29:42Thank you for spending so much time to share it with us.
- 29:45Good luck with the movie.
- 29:46Can't wait to see the doco.
- 29:48That's going to be super cool.
- 29:50And you're an inspiration.
- 29:52The fact that you've come back and kept doing it for many people, that would have been unfathomable, mate.
- 29:59And you're still as passionate about it as you were before the accident.
- 30:03Well done.
- 30:04Much appreciated, mate.
- 30:04Thank you very much.
- 30:05Thank you.
