- 0:01Speaker 1: Now we turned to the Mountain Eagle to read news
- 0:04from Weisberg. Your reader today is Bill Vanarsdal. We will
- 0:09begin with the edition dated September seventeenth, twenty twenty five,
- 0:14which the publishers have donated to a RADIOI as a reminder.
- 0:19RADIOI is a reading service intended for people who are
- 0:22blind or have other disabilities that make it difficult to
- 0:25read printed material. The first item is a photo captioned
- 0:31a week's work fixes car that sat for decades. Bobby
- 0:36Shephard of King's Creek stands next to his nineteen fifty
- 0:40Plymouth coup He found the car about one week ago
- 0:44at the head of a hollow off Route seven, where
- 0:47it had been sitting for decades. He purchased the vehicle
- 0:50and worked diligently for a week to get it running again.
- 0:55One of the big issues he had to deal with
- 0:57was a locked up engine. Everything worked out and he
- 1:00was able to drive it to the Campbell's Branch Community
- 1:03Center charity car show and swap meet. Mixed headline is
- 1:10to say they've been followed and filmed by social media commentators.
- 1:17At least two people who have been the subjects of
- 1:19rumors surrounding the Sean Mickey Stein's murder case say they
- 1:24have been followed and filmed by social media owners. Letter
- 1:29County jailer Brian Sloan and Michael Clark, a minister and
- 1:34former employee of addiction recovery centers, said they were followed
- 1:38and filmed. Videos of both appeared online. Sloan was filmed
- 1:45partly from inside a parked car as he walked down
- 1:48Main Street in Whitesburg to go to lunch. Sloan, who
- 1:53was appointed after the retirement of his brother Bert Sloane,
- 1:56and his running for Jaylor in next year's election, shared
- 2:00the video on his own Facebook page, along with a
- 2:03sarcastic response to it. He said this week that he
- 2:07learned of the original video after someone else saw it.
- 2:11I didn't even know it was out there, and a
- 2:12couple of people sent it to me. He said. The
- 2:15more I sat and thought about it, the more pissed
- 2:18off I got. Sloan said the morale of jail staff
- 2:23is through the floor because of the rumors and adverse attention.
- 2:28He said. A private investigator who says he is working
- 2:31for Stein's as lawyers, visited one employee's home, claiming to
- 2:35be the man's wife, that he has one hundred women
- 2:39who say they were sexually assaulted by district Judge Kevin R. Mullins.
- 2:44Steins shot the unarmed judge to death in his chambers.
- 2:48The crime was caught on a security camera in the
- 2:51judge's office. Clark, who rode with Steins to deliver food
- 2:56to a house the morning of the shooting has not
- 2:58talked to the media about his experiences before. Clark said
- 3:03he was followed to a rehab event more than one
- 3:06hundred miles away this summer, and then video clips of
- 3:10his speech about his own past and recovery from addiction
- 3:14were placed on the internet with negative commentary. They followed
- 3:19me to Mount Sterling, You're talking two and a half
- 3:22hours away, just to record me, and record me and
- 3:25put that on the internet. He said that just goes
- 3:28to show the links these people are willing to go
- 3:30to hurt someone else's reputation and character by cutting up
- 3:34someone's testimony and commenting on it. He has also been
- 3:39accused by people on social media of sending a video
- 3:43of himself masturbating to women in drug rehab. The video
- 3:48with a strategically placed image of a police bulletproof vest
- 3:52overlaid was then shown last week on social media by others.
- 3:58He closed out his own social media last year after
- 4:02he said mental illness is real in a personal video
- 4:05about Stein's and Mullins, both of whom he said were friends.
- 4:10Rumors of inappropriate contact with rehab clients began immediately after
- 4:15he posted his talk. There is no truth to me
- 4:20having any inappropriate relationship as far as a photograph or
- 4:24a video from my past, I don't know what is
- 4:26out there. I was a drug addict for twenty years myself,
- 4:30Clark told The Mountain Eagle. He said he had given
- 4:34no one permission to air any videos of him, saying
- 4:38that possession of such a video without his consent is
- 4:41a criminal offense. Clark declined to talk about his experience
- 4:46with Stein's the morning of the shooting, saying he expects
- 4:49to be called as a witness in the murder trial
- 4:52and does not want to prejudice a jury with anything
- 4:55he might say ahead of time. The next story, it
- 5:00is local tax rates are down slightly this year Lecture County.
- 5:06Local tax rates are down slightly this year due to
- 5:09an increase in the total value of property. The Lectrifiscal
- 5:14Court will have a tax rate of twenty point four
- 5:17cents per one hundred dollars of assessed value for real property,
- 5:21which is down from twenty one point six cents per
- 5:24one hundred dollars of assessed value last year. Personal property
- 5:29will remain at twenty one point six cents, the same
- 5:32as last year. Motor vehicle and watercraft rate will remain
- 5:37at thirteen point seven cents. The real property rate means
- 5:41a home valued at one hundred fifty thousand dollars would
- 5:45be taxed by the Fiscal Court at three hundred twenty
- 5:48four dollars. The Court also accepted the tax rates from
- 5:52other taxing entities that are included on annual property tax bills.
- 5:58All are down slightly due to the total increased value
- 6:02of property in the county. The rights accepted on Monday
- 6:05are as follows. Conservation District real property three point one cents,
- 6:11tangible personal property two point four cents, Jenkins Independent Schools
- 6:16real property eighty six cents, tangible personal property ninety point
- 6:21five cents, motor vehicle, watercraft aircraft sixty nine cents, utility
- 6:27three cents. Letcher County Library District real property eleven point
- 6:33eight cents, tangible personal property fifteen point two to three cents,
- 6:38motor vehicle, watercraft five point three two cents. Letcher County
- 6:44Cooperative Extension Service District real property nineteen cents, tangible personal
- 6:50property thirty cents, motor vehicles and in transit inventory three cents.
- 6:56Letcher County Public Schools real property sixty eight cents, tangible
- 7:01personal property sixty eight cents, motor vehicle forty nine cents,
- 7:07utility three percent. The next headline is new charges filed
- 7:13in Cowen murder case. Electric County Grand Jury has increased
- 7:17the charges against accused murderer Mark Miles and indicted his
- 7:22wife for tampering with physical evidence and hindering prosecution or apprehension.
- 7:28Mark Miles, sixty five, of Callen, was indicted in May
- 7:33on a single charge of murder for allegedly shooting Angela
- 7:37Jeannett Roberts as she sat in her parked car at
- 7:41a cemetery on Bald Mountain at Callan. The new indictment,
- 7:45handed up Thursday, charges him with aggravated murder of Angela
- 7:50Roberts while being engaged in commission of first degree robbery,
- 7:54first degree robbery, and two counts of tampering with physical evidence.
- 8:00Miles's wife, Kathy Myles, also sixty five, was indicted for
- 8:05tampering with physical evidence and hindering prosecution of apprehension. Kentucky
- 8:11State Police served a search warrant on the Miles home
- 8:13in June and seized a high point three eighty pistol.
- 8:18Police searched the house and cars on June fourth, about
- 8:22a week after Electric County grand jury indicted Mark Miles.
- 8:26Warrants were served the same day for two cell phones,
- 8:30storage devices and peripherals associated with the phones. Another warrant
- 8:36was executed two days later for phone records of another number.
- 8:40Miles has been in jail since March twenty second, charged
- 8:44with murdering Roberts, who was found lying over the seat
- 8:48of her car at a cemetery on Ball Mountain Road

- 8:56one one and told police he had found Roberts's body
- 9:00and attempted to help her before he realized she was dead.
- 9:04When police arrived, Roberts was sprawled faced down across the
- 9:08car seat and floorboard covered with blood. Roberts had been
- 9:13shot in the head, apparently while seated in the car.
- 9:17Police found a spent shell casing and bullet inside the vehicle,
- 9:22along with hares that did not appear to come from Roberts.
- 9:25Police served another search warrant last fall for DNA from
- 9:30Miles to compare to the hares found in the car. Roberts,
- 9:34who was fifty eight at the time of her death,
- 9:37had been very public about her efforts to find out
- 9:40who murdered her daughter, Patricia May Roberts Deathridge. Tricia Deathridge, forty,
- 9:46was murdered some time between July twenty seventh and July
- 9:50thirty first, two thousand, twenty three, near her home on
- 9:54Ball Mountain Road. Deathridge's decomposing body was found over a
- 9:59hillside and tangled in vines near her home on July
- 10:04thirty first, twenty twenty three, and she was pronounced dead
- 10:08on August first, shortly after midnight. Roberts had told others
- 10:12that she had made a list of suspects and was
- 10:15eliminating them one by one to find out who shot
- 10:19her daughter. She posted on Facebook on March sixth, twenty
- 10:23twenty four, Trish Deathridge's birthday, asking that if anyone knew
- 10:28anything about her daughter's death to call her Roberts was
- 10:32killed the following day. Also indicted Michael Fleming thirty six

- 14:14testified in the case in the next headline, County Government
- 14:20Homes move forward with projects to build forty six homes
- 14:24on three sites. The Lectuer Fiscal Court has approved a
- 14:29housing developer agreement with Homes Incorporated, opening up seventeen point
- 14:34five million dollars to build forty six single family homes
- 14:38on three sites across Letcher County. The agreement is contingent
- 14:43on Homes having all the money necessary to complete all
- 14:46forty six homes. The grant was first announced in April.
- 14:52The dollars are to procure three properties in Sicco, Thornton
- 14:56and New Zee, extend the necessary infrastructure roads, water sewer
- 15:01if available, develop the properties and build the houses. Seth Long,
- 15:07Executive director of Homes Incorporated, said in April, we expect
- 15:12to build twenty four single family houses and thirteen duplexes
- 15:16twenty six units on these properties. The projects are part
- 15:20of an effort to replace homes that were destroyed in
- 15:24the twenty twenty two flood. The high ground subdivisions are
- 15:29intended to be out of the floodplain and be of
- 15:32an energy efficient design. The subdivisions will be located at Thornton,
- 15:37Sicco and yu Zee. There are future plans for seventeen
- 15:42apartments in the old Fleming Neon High School, and forty
- 15:46eight town houses and single family homes in Weisburg. Another
- 15:50three hundred fifty homes are planned for the yet to
- 15:53be built Grand View subdivision at Jenkins. The seventeen point
- 15:59five million dollars in the developer agreement will be used
- 16:02for land purchase, utilities, and construction, but will be paired
- 16:06with money from other sources. The homes are for low
- 16:11to middle income units and will have a maximum subsidy
- 16:14of two hundred thousand dollars. The money comes from a
- 16:18Community Development Block grant for disaster recovery. That money has
- 16:23not yet been sent to the county, but the court
- 16:26voted to open up a special bank account for it
- 16:29so the State of Kentucky can transfer the funds. The
- 16:33grant is part of one hundred twenty three million dollars
- 16:36awarded to the state for housing for flood victims. The
- 16:40developer agreement was approved unanimously at Mundy's regular Electric Fiscal
- 16:46Court meeting. Much of the court's meeting was centered around
- 16:49development and property. The court also voted unanimously to lease
- 16:55the old Campbell's Branch School property to the community for
- 16:59one dollars per year. The school building is in the
- 17:03flood plain, but community members are developing recreational property next
- 17:07to it. Barbara Pratt said part of the building is
- 17:11out of the floodplain and if it is necessary to
- 17:14tear it down, a new building could be built on
- 17:17that higher area. The building has been used as a
- 17:20community center for several years. The court voted five to zero,
- 17:26with Magistrate Kenny Anderson not voting to return land that
- 17:30the now closed Arley Boggs Elementary school sits on to
- 17:34the Letcher County Board of Education. School Board attorney Daryl
- 17:38Hall told the court the land was put in the
- 17:41county's name in nineteen eighty nine because the Fiscal Court
- 17:45and the school board had to jointly issue bonds for
- 17:48building repairs under the law. At that time. The county
- 17:52was under contract to return the property to the board
- 17:55once the bonds were paid off. The next story Cougar's
- 18:01now three and one after win over Perry, the Letcher
- 18:06County Central Cougars improved to three and one with a
- 18:10hard thought thirty six to twenty victory over home standing
- 18:14Perry County Central quarterback Gunner Holbrook continued his hot streak
- 18:19with four touchdown passes, and the Cougar's defense didn't allow
- 18:23a point the entire second half. We're proud of our
- 18:27guys for getting a tough road win, LCC coach Junior
- 18:31Matthews said after the game. Perry did some stuff in
- 18:34the first half that we hadn't seen, so hats off
- 18:37to them. We made adjustments and played well in the
- 18:40second half. It's always hard to win road games. Letcher
- 18:45Central received the ball to start the game. On third
- 18:49down and twelve yards to go for a first down,
- 18:52Holbrook rolled right and receiver gent Outlaw made a leaping
- 18:56grab for a twenty yard game. Seeing another third down
- 19:01in long, Holbrook rolled to the left and found Colton
- 19:05Stidham in the middle of the zone for a twenty
- 19:07four yard game. The twelve play drive was capped off
- 19:11by a twelve yard touchdown pass to Outlaw. The extra
- 19:15point attempt failed, leaving the score at six to nothing
- 19:19with six point fifty four left in the first quarter.
- 19:23Perry County Central answered quickly with a twenty three yard
- 19:26touchdown run by running back Kagan Cecil. The extra point
- 19:31gave the Commodores a seven to six lead, with Letcher
- 19:36Central now back on offense, Holbrook broke containment on third
- 19:40and eleven and threw a strike to Stidham for a
- 19:42forty eight yard game. Three plays later, Holbrook was sacked
- 19:47on fourth down for a turnover on downs. LCC's defense
- 19:52then stood up, forcing Perry Central to punt after only
- 19:56three plays. Stidham returned the kick thirty eight yardds to
- 20:00the Commodore's thirteen yard line. Holbrooke threw a strike to
- 20:05Mason Stevens on fourth down for a six yard touchdown.
- 20:09The two point attempt failed, but the Cougars had retaken
- 20:12the lead twelve to seven. With eight forty three left
- 20:16in the second quarter. With Perry Central back in possession,
- 20:20the Commodorees quickly moved the ball into LCC territory. On
- 20:24third and long, Cecil caught a thirty five yard pass
- 20:28and was stopped just short of the goal line. Running
- 20:32Back Caden Gibson scored a rushing touchdown on the next play,
- 20:36but LCC blocked the extra point to keep the score
- 20:39at thirteen to twelve. At this point on the road,
- 20:43things appeared to get dicey when Commodore's defender Josh Miller
- 20:47had a fifty seven yard interception return for a score,
- 20:51and the extra point was good to increase the Perry
- 20:54Central lead to twenty to twelve. Now it was time
- 20:59for Electra Central offense to regroup, and they did by
- 21:02moving the ball efficiently deep into Perry territory. Holbrook threw
- 21:07a perfect pass on a fade route to Stidham from
- 21:10his slot position for a ten yard touchdown. Holbrook then
- 21:15ran in the two point conversion to tie the game
- 21:18at twenty to twenty heading into halftime. The LCC kickoff
- 21:23team started the second half with a great kick and
- 21:25coverage that stopped the Perry Central returner at the Commodore's
- 21:29eight yard line. The Cougar defense stood strong and forced
- 21:34the Commodore's to punt, giving the LCC offense great field position.
- 21:40Facing third down and seven yards to go for a
- 21:42first down, Holbrook rolled left and connected with Stevens for
- 21:46a fourteen yard game. Theayden Brown then caught a pass
- 21:51for a twelve yard game to the one yard line.
- 21:54Garrett Howard ran up the middle on the next play
- 21:57for a touchdown. Howard also ran in the two point
- 22:00conversion to give ELCC a twenty eight to twenty lead.
- 22:06Perry Central's offense was able to gain two first downs
- 22:10before LCC defender Brody Griffith made a tackle in the
- 22:13backfield for a six yard loss. Then on third down,
- 22:17Colton Stidham made a great open field tackle to force
- 22:21another Commodore punt. After punts from both teams, Holbrooke threw
- 22:27a wide receiver screen to Stevens, who raced past the
- 22:30defense for an eighty two yard touchdown. Outlaw caught a
- 22:35pass in the end zone for the two point conversion
- 22:38to make it thirty six to twenty in favor of
- 22:41LCC early in the fourth quarter. The defense took over
- 22:45from there, with Griffith having two sacks and Braxton Banks
- 22:50were covering a fumble in the fourth quarter as the
- 22:52Cougars cruised to their third straight win. The Cougar defense
- 22:57had a rough first half, but woke up a halftime
- 23:00and dominated the second half of the game. Garrett Howard
- 23:04led the defense with fifteen total tackles. Brody Griffith lived
- 23:08in the backfield and compiled three tackles for loss and
- 23:12two sacks. Brett Sturgell and Keaton Fields also had sacks
- 23:17for the LCC defense. Colton Stidham had nine tackles and
- 23:22forced the fumble that was recovered by Banks. Canaan's sergeant
- 23:26was also dominant and had three tackles for loss. Gunnard
- 23:30Holbrook continued his brilliant play of late, completing seventeen passes
- 23:35on thirty one attempts for two hundred ninety two yards
- 23:38and four touchdowns. Mason Stevens led the receiving corps with
- 23:43four receptions for one hundred fifteen yards and two touchdowns.
- 23:48Colton Stidham had five catches for ninety eight yards and
- 23:51a touchdown. Jet Outlaw had three receptions for forty seven
- 23:57yards and a score. Brett Sturgell had had five carries
- 24:01for thirty eight yards, and Garrett Howard had a rushing
- 24:04touchdown for the Cougar offense. Lesser Central travels to Breathett
- 24:09County on Friday, with kickoffs set for seven thirty pm.
- 24:14The next story is Gabby's Fishing Fever by Greg Gabby Caudle.
- 24:19It's time to fish while wading streams. With the weather
- 24:25cooling down some and the water temperature is a little milder.
- 24:29The fishing in streams and rivers is getting better as
- 24:32the fall peak season approaches. I have loved to wade
- 24:36while fishing my entire life and have cast some nice
- 24:39fish doing so. If you have done this type of
- 24:42fishing before, then you know it is a special feeling
- 24:45to be in the water while fishing. Being on a
- 24:49boat or dock is very fun, but there is just
- 24:51something different about being a part of the fish's water world.
- 24:56By placing yourself in the water, sometimes pretty deep, you
- 24:59just look at fishing a little different and it takes
- 25:01you back to a slower, simpler time of fishing from
- 25:05your youth. No big fancy boats or expensive gear, just
- 25:10you and your know how, a single rod and reel
- 25:14and a handful of lures or baits. You will also
- 25:18experience some of the most beautiful and peaceful places the
- 25:22Good Lord ever made. If you have never done this
- 25:25type of fishing, you really do not know what you're missing.
- 25:29One of the greatest things about wade fishing is it
- 25:31is very basic and you do not need high dollar
- 25:35equipment to catch fish. A simple spinning reel with light
- 25:39line and a light action rod will work for most trips.
- 25:43Small lures will work best most of the time. Of
- 25:46all my years of wade fishing. I have favorite lure
- 25:49types I like to use best. I like small top
- 25:53water buzz baits, small crack baits, and spinners like rooster tails,
- 25:57and small worms or grubs fished on lightweight jig heads
- 26:02like a white Berkeley power worm or grub. All these
- 26:06baits have worked well for me over the years and
- 26:08caught a lot of nice fish. I also love to
- 26:12fish streams with worms and other live bait. I plan
- 26:16on doing some wage fishing shows this fall on my
- 26:19Fishing with Gabby show on Facebook, so be sure to
- 26:22check them out. Thanks and God bless you all. And
- 26:27the next story is two sentenced. Two Whitesburg residents entered
- 26:33guilty pleas to charges in Electricircuit court. They are Andrea Frayley,
- 26:39forty two, one sixty one Maple Street, Whitesburg. Entered a
- 26:43guilty plea in lectri Circuit Court to a charge of
- 26:46first degree possession of a controlled substance first defense meth
- 26:50and fedimin. Frayley was sentenced to three years in prison,
- 26:54probated for three years. She also entered a plea of
- 26:58guilty in a second indictment to a charge of flagrant
- 27:01non support of her minor children and was sentenced to
- 27:05five years in prison, probated for five years. Mark Joseph
- 27:10Morton thirty nine two nineteen, Hampton Branch, Whitesburg will serve
- 27:15twenty five months in prison after pleading guilty to first
- 27:19degree possession of a controlled substance methamphetamine. And this concludes
- 27:26the reading of The Mountain Eagle. Your reader has been
- 27:29billed and Arsdale. Now please stay tuned for continued programming
- 27:35on behalf of everyone here at Radio I. Thank you
- 27:38for listening and have a good day.
