- 0:00Speaker 1: Is really totally out of my comfort zone. It's not
- 0:03Speaker 1: something I've really dealt with before. But I'm so looking
- 0:07Speaker 1: forward to finding out how on earth she's decided to
- 0:09Speaker 1: cycle a mountain in France.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not my idea of fun. I must have been,
- 0:15Speaker 2: but there you go.
- 0:16Speaker 3: But we will.
- 0:17Speaker 2: We'll be talking to Cassie after the first song this morning.
- 0:20Speaker 2: And this is Queen obviously, and this is bicycle race.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Can't a bit of queen?
- 0:26Speaker 2: Got to have a bit of Queen, especially as we've
- 0:28Speaker 2: got a cyclist in. I thought we'd check this one in.
- 0:31Speaker 2: This is Queen, Freddie Mercury and Co. And bicycle race.
- 0:39Speaker 4: I want to ride.
- 0:45Speaker 5: I want to ride my busy. I want to ride
- 0:49Speaker 5: my bike. I want to ride my bussie. I want
- 0:54Speaker 5: to ride.
- 0:55Speaker 1: It where.
- 0:57Speaker 4: I want to.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Freddie Mercury and the boys there, you right, that kid,
- 1:09Speaker 2: Freddie Mercury and the boys there, And that's a bicycle race.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I'm like the other side of that one. Remember what
- 1:14Speaker 2: that one was called? Had a picture on the.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Front and it had fat bottom girls.
- 1:22Speaker 1: It was called I did it?
- 1:23Speaker 3: I think I don't. Did you get away with that
- 1:26Speaker 3: these days?
- 1:26Speaker 1: No? No, no, very unpolitically correct in.
- 1:29Speaker 3: The Yeah, nineteen seventy eight.
- 1:31Speaker 2: I think you'd got away with that one, right, Okay,
- 1:33Speaker 2: Ket's going to start off with a bit of sport.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm going to do a bit of park run
- 1:36Speaker 1: while we've got a little bit of investigation to do.
- 1:39Speaker 1: But this should have gone out last week actually, but
- 1:42Speaker 1: due to being away, I hadn't been to a local
- 1:44Speaker 1: senior or junior part run for a long time. So
- 1:46Speaker 1: last weekend I visited both now the senior part run
- 1:50Speaker 1: and Marni Minus is last weekend. The senior part has
- 1:53Speaker 1: only just finished to be honest today it was well
- 1:57Speaker 1: supported with four hundred and seventy six runners and tourists
- 2:00Speaker 1: as they call him, possibly due to the bank holiday,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and out of the four hundred and seventy six, thirty
- 2:07Speaker 1: three recorded personal bests and representatives of forty three different
- 2:12Speaker 1: clubs took part. Now, before the start, I was chatting
- 2:15Speaker 1: to a former guest of the show, Tom Bean, who
- 2:18Speaker 1: was telling me about the horrific injury he suffered which
- 2:21Speaker 1: kept him out of action for nearly all the hockey season. However,
- 2:25Speaker 1: he showed, no, he showed is a gb triathlon pedigree
- 2:29Speaker 1: by winning in a time of seventeen minutes twenty seconds,
- 2:32Speaker 1: a minute faster than the second runner. There was a
- 2:36Speaker 1: usual friendly, buzzy atmosphere about the place, something that's common
- 2:39Speaker 1: to all park runs. So on Sunday I visited the
- 2:42Speaker 1: Junior Park one over at Radney Park and I popped
- 2:46Speaker 1: over there early on and caught up with a team
- 2:48Speaker 1: of Tom Wells Roy Atkins, both a former guest of
- 2:52Speaker 1: the show and run director Joe Sherrington. And after a
- 2:55Speaker 1: quick catch up, I decided to bring over my pa,
- 2:59Speaker 1: so I had a bit of music and a chat
- 3:00Speaker 1: to the morning. Now considering it excuse me, considering it
- 3:04Speaker 1: was a bank holiday. One hundred and six children took
- 3:07Speaker 1: part and special well done is go to Sue's granddaughter
- 3:10Speaker 1: Sophia who took part in her very first part run
- 3:13Speaker 1: and finished well, making her mum Kirsty puffer little bit
- 3:17Speaker 1: trying to keep up with her. Now, that's great seeing
- 3:19Speaker 1: all the kids doing some exercise out in the fresh air.
- 3:22Speaker 1: And please note there's no Junior Park run on June
- 3:25Speaker 1: seventh due to there's a big boot fair going on
- 3:28Speaker 1: at the Radne Park and they're because trying to get
- 3:30Speaker 1: in and out of the park. So a date for
- 3:34Speaker 1: your diary. Sunday, July the nineteenth is the second birthday
- 3:38Speaker 1: of the Junior part Run, and I hope to go
- 3:41Speaker 1: over there with a bit of music and a bit
- 3:42Speaker 1: of chat once again. Now, just while we're talking about this,
- 3:45Speaker 1: I just want to give a mention to my niece
- 3:48Speaker 1: Joe Smith. Now, Joe, if you remember, she came down
- 3:51Speaker 1: from Wisbeach one random Sunday morning, Saturday morning and to
- 3:56Speaker 1: see her uncle Kevin on the mic at the park run.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I don't know what it was. It was a birthday edition,
- 4:02Speaker 1: I think, and I was on the bandstand. I looked down,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I thought, do you know what it looks like? My
- 4:06Speaker 1: niece and she come all the way down anyway. She's
- 4:10Speaker 1: a run director for her local Junior park Run, which
- 4:15Speaker 1: is in Wisbeach. And there's a lovely, lovely picture of
- 4:19Speaker 1: her in Facebook because for their theme for the park run,
- 4:25Speaker 1: they all dressed up as Where's Wally And there's a
- 4:27Speaker 1: fantastic picture of her in a stripey red and white
- 4:30Speaker 1: jumper and a stripey red and white hat with her
- 4:33Speaker 1: thumbs up. So well done to you, Joe. Okay, I
- 4:36Speaker 1: think it's time for another bit of music ady, and
- 4:37Speaker 1: then we're going to come back and have a chat
- 4:39Speaker 1: with Cassie.
- 4:41Speaker 2: You've got this one, Kevin your playlistair thing. This one
- 4:45Speaker 2: was very very well fult I thought, I guess this morning.
- 4:49Speaker 2: This is Diana Ross. Don't often play Diana Ross, but
- 4:52Speaker 2: we are this morning and this one ain't no Mountain high.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Cassie's cringing it.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Anyway, we'll be talking to Cassie after this one from
- 5:03Speaker 2: Diana Ross. Fantastic there, Donna Summer, Sorry, dood Summer. No
- 5:57Speaker 2: God tell us live radio Diana Ross and ain't no
- 6:01Speaker 2: Mountain High enough from nineteen seventy God I was five
- 6:04Speaker 2: years old. Anyway, Good morning Cassie. I believe we're live
- 6:10Speaker 2: on TikTok as well.
- 6:11Speaker 3: We are indeed.
- 6:15Speaker 6: Everyone, Good morning world.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Okay, So Cassie, now you've been on the show before
- 6:23Speaker 1: and so it's good to have you back. And now
- 6:27Speaker 1: last time you were on, we had a different hat
- 6:29Speaker 1: on you. You were a photographer and we're talking about
- 6:32Speaker 1: your business. Yeah, and for all the listeners, the wonderful
- 6:36Speaker 1: video of me promoting the radio station was thanks to
- 6:40Speaker 1: Cassie and Open to productions. But today we're going to
- 6:42Speaker 1: talk about cycling. Now, you've got a massive cycling challenge
- 6:46Speaker 1: coming up, so I really want to start at the beginning.
- 6:50Speaker 1: How on earth did you dream up this challenge? Go
- 6:54Speaker 1: and tell us all about it. I mean, was it
- 6:55Speaker 1: a night in a bar when.
- 6:57Speaker 4: You know, absolutely not drinks? So definitely not.
- 7:01Speaker 7: The funny thing in all of this is I actually
- 7:03Speaker 7: didn't sign myself up for this.
- 7:05Speaker 4: It was my friends.
- 7:06Speaker 3: They're like, oh, are you sure they're friends?
- 7:08Speaker 1: Well, I haven't spoken to.
- 7:13Speaker 7: We're negotiating that no, But honestly, it was actually a
- 7:17Speaker 7: conversation and some of my friends were they've done it
- 7:21Speaker 7: in the past, and I caste you like a challenge
- 7:24Speaker 7: and I was like yeah.
- 7:25Speaker 4: They're like, oh, you should do this, and I was
- 7:27Speaker 4: like should I?
- 7:29Speaker 7: You sort of brush it off, don't you. Well it
- 7:33Speaker 7: was a Christmas gift. They were like, we've signed you up.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Oh great, I've got to dedicate my life to this now.
- 7:39Speaker 4: So that's what happened.
- 7:42Speaker 7: I bought myself, well, he helped me get a new bike,
- 7:46Speaker 7: and that's basically where it all started, right.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I mean, so what'scing experience of your head then?
- 7:52Speaker 4: So I come back.
- 7:54Speaker 7: I'll come from a track background, so I have a
- 7:56Speaker 7: single gear bike. So it's very, very different to what
- 8:00Speaker 7: I'm actually doing at the moment. So it's a lot
- 8:02Speaker 7: of learning, a lot of new technical skills. I have
- 8:05Speaker 7: twenty four gears.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Whether I use them all or not, I don't know.
- 8:10Speaker 7: Probably yeah, So yeah, it's a whole new thing, right.
- 8:15Speaker 1: So the challenge that you're taking on now, I've got
- 8:18Speaker 1: it here in front of me, but I want you
- 8:20Speaker 1: to tell me all about it. It's it's something really
- 8:23Speaker 1: really special that anyone is a keen cyclist will know instantly,
- 8:27Speaker 1: So tell us about it.
- 8:29Speaker 7: Okay, So it's this particular event. Is it t happed them?
- 8:35Speaker 7: And it's the second year that they're running this one.
- 8:39Speaker 7: They do another one that's been going on for years,
- 8:42Speaker 7: and that's one the ones that my friends have done
- 8:44Speaker 7: in the past, and so that's kind of like a
- 8:47Speaker 7: really new thing. And I looked at the videos to
- 8:51Speaker 7: the first one last year and there wasn't very many
- 8:54Speaker 7: females that are actually like documenting this. I thought, well,
- 8:56Speaker 7: this is an opportunity. Let's just while I've actually got this,
- 9:00Speaker 7: let's make the most of it. But yeah, so it's
- 9:03Speaker 7: on mon one tier in France, and it's a very steep.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Hill very step. Hell, so tell us let's start at
- 9:13Speaker 1: the starting point to finish how far is it linear?
- 9:16Speaker 7: Was so the gradient three thousand meters and it's one
- 9:21Speaker 7: hundred and twenty kilometers.
- 9:22Speaker 1: One hundred and twenty kilometers now in itself to cyclists
- 9:26Speaker 1: that I mean some cyclists go out on a ride
- 9:30Speaker 1: longer than that, don't know on a Sunday morning, you know, right,
- 9:33Speaker 1: But this difference is the gradient. Now we've been trying
- 9:37Speaker 1: to work out how what you can compare it to,
- 9:40Speaker 1: and I think the closest we've got here is the
- 9:43Speaker 1: dover Hill, which, now thanks to my colleague Peter Morning Peter,
- 9:48Speaker 1: he was telling me that the dover Hill has got
- 9:51Speaker 1: an average ten percent gradient that in some spots goes
- 9:55Speaker 1: up to eighteen or perhaps twenty percent. So that's pretty tough.
- 9:59Speaker 1: But it's only like a smidgen of the amount you've
- 10:03Speaker 1: got to cover, isn't it. Yeah, she's losing her not
- 10:10Speaker 1: to think about it. You got so you've got to
- 10:13Speaker 1: bear your soul. This is the radio show. Our listeners
- 10:16Speaker 1: want to know what's going on and what you've undertaken
- 10:19Speaker 1: has so do myself an Adrian, I mean I've done
- 10:21Speaker 1: some research on it, and it frightened the life out
- 10:23Speaker 1: of me, to be honest, because I wouldn't be able
- 10:26Speaker 1: to to sleep at night. You know about this, about
- 10:31Speaker 1: this gradient. I'm just going to show a picture to
- 10:35Speaker 1: Adrian of the gradient.
- 10:37Speaker 4: Yeah, that's something. It's great.
- 10:39Speaker 1: It's like a forty five degree triangle, isn't it, Adrian.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I'll tell you what I could do that no problem,
- 10:44Speaker 2: from the top to the bottom.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Yeah, of course, why should you say that? You might
- 10:48Speaker 4: just go over the handlebars?
- 10:56Speaker 1: Okay, okay, So so you enter the race, are there
- 11:02Speaker 1: any special qualifications? You know? So you obviously have to
- 11:06Speaker 1: sign because I know certainly in France if you do
- 11:09Speaker 1: a run, you've got to get a doctor certificate. Did
- 11:11Speaker 1: you have to get a doctor certificate?
- 11:13Speaker 4: Do you have to guess?
- 11:14Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 11:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm still going in the process of that.
- 11:17Speaker 7: They haven't sent me the details on that just yet,
- 11:20Speaker 7: but I know for the other event that's happening in
- 11:23Speaker 7: July nineteenth, they've already had to submit their's, so yeah,
- 11:28Speaker 7: mine will be in the process.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Yeah, we're good luck on that one, because trying to
- 11:33Speaker 1: see a doctor these days is like a nightmare.
- 11:34Speaker 3: And yeah, just Felid an e console. They'll get back
- 11:37Speaker 3: to you.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Yeah, we were talking about that earlier on.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Okay, so let's talk about We'll get back to the
- 11:49Speaker 1: training side of it a bit later, but I want
- 11:51Speaker 1: to talk about the logistics of it. It's down in
- 11:54Speaker 1: near enough to the south of France, so you've got to
- 11:58Speaker 1: get there. Well, you've registered, you've got to get there,
- 12:01Speaker 1: You've got accommodation, you've got to get your bike there.
- 12:04Speaker 1: When you get to the top, you've got to get
- 12:05Speaker 1: your bike down. So runners through what you've you've prepared
- 12:09Speaker 1: for them.
- 12:10Speaker 7: Well, Sam's kind of giving me the rundown because obviously.
- 12:14Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 12:15Speaker 1: All right, let's interrupt you there because there's a major question,
- 12:18Speaker 1: is it you're obviously not doing.
- 12:20Speaker 4: It on your own, not doing it on my own name, right.
- 12:22Speaker 1: So tell us about your running cycling partner.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Sam and Elliott are joining me on this one. So
- 12:29Speaker 4: I am thankful for that, just like swept me off,
- 12:32Speaker 4: like you do it on your own.
- 12:34Speaker 7: Oh no, we do a tandem next year.
- 12:42Speaker 4: So yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 7: They the idea was to drive They're going to drive
- 12:47Speaker 7: the bikes down and I'm going to fly over. Because
- 12:50Speaker 7: of the duration of like how much I can admit
- 12:53Speaker 7: to actually being over there because of my business and
- 12:55Speaker 7: things like that. So yeah, we've just kind of been
- 12:57Speaker 7: in trying to work out how that's that you're logistically
- 13:00Speaker 7: going to work. But yeah, they're going to handle all
- 13:03Speaker 7: of that for me, thank you.
- 13:06Speaker 3: And so you have got good supporting it.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's not Yeah, it's great.
- 13:10Speaker 3: It's it's not just you tling up on.
- 13:14Speaker 7: No, you have been amazing and like we've done some
- 13:16Speaker 7: great rides together as well for the training aspect, and
- 13:19Speaker 7: they give me really good insight with like what I
- 13:21Speaker 7: need to know, how I need to do things and
- 13:24Speaker 7: like preparing myself and yeah, it's just been it's been
- 13:27Speaker 7: great overall.
- 13:28Speaker 1: We're just like to how many nights can you spare
- 13:31Speaker 1: over there? Because you probably start early in the morning
- 13:34Speaker 1: then you want to crash it out that evening.
- 13:36Speaker 4: Yeah, so you have to go to I think it's
- 13:38Speaker 4: like picking.
- 13:39Speaker 7: Up all of your like numbers and things like a
- 13:43Speaker 7: few days beforehand, but I might do, mind you, the
- 13:46Speaker 7: day before.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Like one of them.
- 13:49Speaker 7: So I'm trying to do like two or three nights
- 13:51Speaker 7: over there. I think that's like realistically the amount I
- 13:55Speaker 7: can do.
- 13:56Speaker 4: And then obviously really really early in.
- 13:58Speaker 7: The morning, have to get therefore just to be prepared.
- 14:03Speaker 4: So yeah, it's going to be a very very long day.
- 14:06Speaker 1: So yeah, we'll see, right. So have Elliott and Sam
- 14:11Speaker 1: done it before? Yeah, yeah, they've done it before.
- 14:13Speaker 7: They haven't done the femme one before, but they they're
- 14:17Speaker 7: still actually going to do the one on the nineteenth.
- 14:20Speaker 7: So they're doing the one on the nineteenth of July,
- 14:22Speaker 7: spending three weeks out there, and then you're going to
- 14:24Speaker 7: do the A tap them with me, So.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Let me get this right, A tap fem means ladies stage. Yeah, Okay, they've.
- 14:33Speaker 7: Allowed it because I think there's not I think the
- 14:35Speaker 7: whole idea was it was because there wasn't enough females
- 14:38Speaker 7: doing this anyway, I think I just dedicate. But because
- 14:41Speaker 7: obviously the numbers were quite low, I think they've just
- 14:43Speaker 7: allowed other people to join. And also it means like
- 14:47Speaker 7: other people can just do something three weeks after the
- 14:49Speaker 7: other event that's happening.
- 14:50Speaker 4: So yeah, I think it's quite lovely that can be.
- 14:54Speaker 1: So, I mean, it does amaze me that if you
- 14:56Speaker 1: and you will, I'm sure get to the top. But
- 14:58Speaker 1: is there support vehicles bring your bike down or if
- 15:01Speaker 1: you've got a cycle down.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Do you know what? I actually don't know.
- 15:07Speaker 7: How to get up, but yeah, I see there's like
- 15:11Speaker 7: vehicles there, or you can make your way down on
- 15:13Speaker 7: your bike. I'm sure it's quite like a lovely community
- 15:16Speaker 7: and everyone. Yeah, I think that's a future.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Well there's one to think of. That's one to think of, Adrian.
- 15:24Speaker 1: So I think we'll have a music break because I'm
- 15:25Speaker 1: getting out of breath here, and then we'll come back.
- 15:28Speaker 1: And it was start catching up again with with Cassie
- 15:31Speaker 1: and and some more in depth training and stuff like that.
- 15:34Speaker 3: I couldn't really find my chase about bikes.
- 15:36Speaker 2: But when you go to the gym and I think
- 15:39Speaker 2: you do a spin class, Yeah, correct, not not me personally,
- 15:45Speaker 2: but I thought, let's put this one on. This is
- 15:47Speaker 2: Kylie and this one's spinning around. There you going, little
- 16:43Speaker 2: Kylie all the way from Australia.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Good a Cobba. We're all dancing around in the studio
- 16:48Speaker 3: doing that one. We loved a little bit of kie there.
- 16:51Speaker 1: A waving to all fans around the world and TikTok.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I just want to say, at this moment in time,
- 16:58Speaker 1: good morning to Leslie and Ian. Cassie's parents. They're in
- 17:03Speaker 1: between Spain and France, I think, but they're hoping to
- 17:05Speaker 1: be tuned in. Where are they now, do you think,
- 17:06Speaker 1: cass I think they've all right.
- 17:08Speaker 7: Well when I say landed, they drove, but I think
- 17:11Speaker 7: they're in France now.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, yah, right. We will save a few more
- 17:16Speaker 1: hellos towards the end of the show. But let's get
- 17:18Speaker 1: down to the nitty grit and Cassie. Now, mont Vauntu
- 17:22Speaker 1: is known as the Giant of Provence, so we've seen
- 17:26Speaker 1: the gradient and so let's talk about the serious stuff.
- 17:30Speaker 1: You take it on, this challenge, and it's you don't
- 17:33Speaker 1: want to take it on lightly, So tell us about
- 17:35Speaker 1: your training. I mean, my friend Pete that I spoke
- 17:39Speaker 1: to yesterday said that there is almost nowhere in UK
- 17:44Speaker 1: that you could compare to Volantu and so how do
- 17:49Speaker 1: you prepare for it for it?
- 17:51Speaker 7: Well, fortunately I've moved to Surrey and I'd say there's
- 17:56Speaker 7: a lot of hills in Surrey. It just really helped
- 17:58Speaker 7: me because I have to make sure that I can,
- 18:01Speaker 7: you know, commit to a hill or I few. So
- 18:04Speaker 7: that's it's definitely it's been an experience. And I think
- 18:10Speaker 7: if I I mean if I say down and folks
- 18:12Speaker 7: in and try to do this, I think, you know,
- 18:14Speaker 7: there was no way I would be possibly I'd probably
- 18:17Speaker 7: have to go up to like the peaks or something
- 18:19Speaker 7: like that. So yeah, it's definitely on my side. Just
- 18:23Speaker 7: go out and commit to many hills.
- 18:27Speaker 1: And how do you fit training in around your business
- 18:29Speaker 1: if you do it as a win or.
- 18:34Speaker 7: Yeah, you sort of just have to manage each day
- 18:37Speaker 7: as it comes. Because there's some days that I do
- 18:40Speaker 7: the early morning, some days that I do in the evening,
- 18:42Speaker 7: some days I do during the day. It depends on
- 18:45Speaker 7: the structure. I'd say I'm mainly doing. So it's like
- 18:50Speaker 7: kind of the long the long rides I'm doing all
- 18:53Speaker 7: the Sunday or the Saturday, and they start quite early
- 18:57Speaker 7: and then they go onto like sort of like the
- 18:59Speaker 7: mid afternoon because obviously there's like lunch involved and there's
- 19:02Speaker 7: snacks and breaks and things. So it is a day
- 19:05Speaker 7: that you have to kind of commit to. And then
- 19:07Speaker 7: the other bits are just like two three hours maybe
- 19:10Speaker 7: four hours during the week each time, so and I
- 19:13Speaker 7: try and do that three or four times a week.
- 19:16Speaker 7: So I'm trying to just get as much as you know,
- 19:19Speaker 7: the leg spins as it.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Were, on the day of the race or whatever. Yeah,
- 19:27Speaker 2: what sort of time does it kick off?
- 19:29Speaker 7: You know, I believe it depends on what my number is.
- 19:34Speaker 7: I don't actually know yet because.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Middle of the afternoon with the Oh.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Absolutely I will.
- 19:44Speaker 1: There's another thing too, You can't write into training really
- 19:48Speaker 1: if the weather is getting off twenty eight to thirty degrees.
- 19:51Speaker 1: But I one assume when you're getting out of breath
- 19:53Speaker 1: going up the hill it will get cooler the higher
- 19:56Speaker 1: you go. But you try regime apart from the strength
- 20:01Speaker 1: that you need. What about your diet. Have you had
- 20:04Speaker 1: to change your diet, you know, electrolytes and stuff like that.
- 20:07Speaker 7: Yeah, yes, and no, sorry it sounds a bit no,
- 20:13Speaker 7: absolutely right. No, So I'd say I've just had a
- 20:17Speaker 7: lot more carbs in my diet. And because obviously when
- 20:21Speaker 7: we spoke last time, I was doing a lot of
- 20:24Speaker 7: track stuff, so I had a lot more fats opposed
- 20:28Speaker 7: to carbs because I wasn't doing the longevity of a run.
- 20:32Speaker 7: And I'd say that there is definitely the same sort
- 20:36Speaker 7: of structure to doing a long run. So if you're
- 20:38Speaker 7: doing a half marathon, for instance, I can I can
- 20:40Speaker 7: kind of see the relationship that you'd have then to,
- 20:44Speaker 7: you know, with the diet with this, so yeah, just
- 20:47Speaker 7: a lot more carbs and a lot more snacks and
- 20:51Speaker 7: a lot more food.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Really, yeah, are you feeling you know, if you've done
- 20:56Speaker 1: a couple of four hour are you feeling tired? Does
- 20:59Speaker 1: it really sort of Yeah?
- 21:01Speaker 7: No, No, I don't. I don't know whether it's just
- 21:04Speaker 7: I'm on overdrive at the moment.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Yeah. Has it really sunk in though? I mean, I think.
- 21:15Speaker 4: I'll let you know in a few weeks.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I mean I was studying the website yesterday and this
- 21:21Speaker 1: morning and I thought, this is I mean, the London
- 21:24Speaker 1: Marathon is one thing, but this seems so much tougher
- 21:26Speaker 1: than anything that I've ever ever come across at all.
- 21:31Speaker 1: I mean I've probably told you this. I walked from
- 21:34Speaker 1: London to Brighton sixty two miles and I did it
- 21:36Speaker 1: all in one hit. That was kind of a steady pace,
- 21:41Speaker 1: quite comfortable. But this is when you see the gradient
- 21:45Speaker 1: and if you basically if you're getting out brief you
- 21:47Speaker 1: get off and just have a little walk and you
- 21:50Speaker 1: get back on, it's still got to start on it.
- 21:52Speaker 1: It's like starting on half way out the road of remembrance.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Isn't it even steeper than that? So I'm sorry to
- 21:59Speaker 1: bring all this up. Can't make it so, but this
- 22:02Speaker 1: is I'm absolutely finding this amazing. But it is of
- 22:06Speaker 1: course a famous section of the Tour de France. Yeah,
- 22:10Speaker 1: and I mean there is a story we were talking
- 22:13Speaker 1: off out and I only found out about it yesterday
- 22:16Speaker 1: from a friend of mine that I did kind of
- 22:20Speaker 1: ask Cassie's permission to tell this story. But it also
- 22:25Speaker 1: has a place in history mont Venture. Back in nineteen
- 22:29Speaker 1: sixty seven, there was a cyclist called Tommy Simpson. Now
- 22:33Speaker 1: I was only sixteen at the time, but I do
- 22:35Speaker 1: remember this happening. Tommy Simpson was one of at the
- 22:40Speaker 1: time the best professional cyclists in the UK, and he
- 22:44Speaker 1: was part of a team that was in the Tour
- 22:46Speaker 1: de France and he was absolutely obsessed with winning it.
- 22:50Speaker 1: But unfortunately he had an illness just before the start
- 22:54Speaker 1: of this stage and he wasn't well. He had diarrhea
- 22:58Speaker 1: and he was feeling weak. And there wasn't much known
- 23:01Speaker 1: about doping as it was called then. It was in
- 23:04Speaker 1: the early days, and they were kind of trying things.
- 23:06Speaker 1: There was a bit of it going on, but Tommy
- 23:09Speaker 1: Simpson took some amphetamines and he mixed it with some brandy,
- 23:13Speaker 1: and then, being the cyclist that he was, he just
- 23:18Speaker 1: absolutely went for it up the mountain and he collapsed
- 23:22Speaker 1: about a mile from the top and he passed away.
- 23:25Speaker 1: And there is now a memorial there. So I've got
- 23:31Speaker 1: to thank my friend Pete for telling me about this.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I knew about it when I was a kid, but
- 23:36Speaker 1: I didn't know that there's since a memorial. And it's
- 23:40Speaker 1: like a gravestone, a big gravestone, and it's almost like
- 23:43Speaker 1: a pilgrimage. Cyclist try and get to the memorial, and
- 23:47Speaker 1: instead of leaving flowers at the memorial, they leave their
- 23:50Speaker 1: cycling water bottles and there's some lovely pictures. It looks
- 23:54Speaker 1: a bit random, looks like the beach did at the weekend,
- 23:56Speaker 1: but it's so meaningful. You know, these cyclists have got
- 23:59Speaker 1: there and their water bowls as a memory to Tommy Simpson,
- 24:03Speaker 1: and he was He's still highly regarded in the annals
- 24:07Speaker 1: of child of France history. So I really didn't want
- 24:12Speaker 1: to put you off about that.
- 24:16Speaker 4: Parents are going to listen to this. It's okay.
- 24:21Speaker 1: I mean, this was a man at the top of
- 24:22Speaker 1: his tree, and was determined, and there was nothing and
- 24:25Speaker 1: if you like, he died doing what he liked doing,
- 24:27Speaker 1: and he died in the saddle. I mean, there's no
- 24:29Speaker 1: need for you to go to the extreme, and we
- 24:31Speaker 1: want you to come back and tell us all about it.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Anyway I made but I don't know what else to
- 24:39Speaker 1: say really except this would frighten the life out of me.
- 24:42Speaker 1: And so you're training. Are the hills in Surrey higher
- 24:47Speaker 1: than the hills in Folkston?
- 24:48Speaker 4: Oh?
- 24:49Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 24:50Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 24:50Speaker 7: So the most because I track everything on Strava, so
- 24:57Speaker 7: the most elevation it's like six hundred and something meters
- 25:03Speaker 7: I've done, But the overall, like they put it in
- 25:07Speaker 7: technical terms, so overall it's like I think I've done
- 25:12Speaker 7: one thousand, five hundred meters, So it depends on how
- 25:15Speaker 7: oldng I've obviously gone for So that's the most I've
- 25:18Speaker 7: done at the moment.
- 25:19Speaker 4: So I'm almost there.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, But getting onto another thing is the do
- 25:28Speaker 1: use three of you? Do you think you'll be doing
- 25:30Speaker 1: it together and you'll stay as a team or you know,
- 25:33Speaker 1: the fellows might think I really need to get this
- 25:35Speaker 1: over and done with a film.
- 25:36Speaker 4: I want to beat them.
- 25:39Speaker 7: No, Well, I've told them, like, please just do your
- 25:43Speaker 7: I don't want you to just be like, oh, cas
- 25:45Speaker 7: is you know yeah, yeah you have.
- 25:46Speaker 4: To stay behind.
- 25:47Speaker 7: No, absolutely, not just like go and be yeah, just
- 25:51Speaker 7: be really. But when I've seen them do the other event,
- 25:54Speaker 7: they've been pretty much together that their fitness is very
- 25:57Speaker 7: very close together.
- 25:58Speaker 4: I just want to get to that point. I don't
- 26:00Speaker 4: know whether I will, but that's what I want to do.
- 26:03Speaker 7: Yeah. So then when we have the pictures, like you knows,
- 26:06Speaker 7: as you go.
- 26:06Speaker 4: Around, I'm like, yeah, I'm with my friends.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, but I might not be. And what about
- 26:12Speaker 1: on the technical side of the bike. You've got this
- 26:14Speaker 1: super duper bike which we've got in the studio at
- 26:16Speaker 1: the moment, and it's wow, it's twenty four gears. If
- 26:22Speaker 1: there's any issues with the bike, of Sam and Elliott
- 26:26Speaker 1: kind of giving you some mechanical instructions if you get
- 26:29Speaker 1: a puncture.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, they've been great.
- 26:31Speaker 7: So we're going to just take some spares with us anyway,
- 26:34Speaker 7: because so there are points where if you you know,
- 26:38Speaker 7: you do have something that comes up when you're riding
- 26:42Speaker 7: and you get a punch or something, the queues are
- 26:44Speaker 7: going to be huge, and you know, that might take
- 26:46Speaker 7: off a n half an hour or so of your
- 26:50Speaker 7: overall and you just obviously don't want to.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I spend too long on it.
- 26:54Speaker 7: Yeah, so you kind of just have to bring what
- 26:56Speaker 7: you need for your spit, like for your bike specifically,
- 26:59Speaker 7: and I think that's the most amazing advice to give really.
- 27:02Speaker 7: So oh yeah, I'll have some spares and I'm hopefully
- 27:06Speaker 7: for the best, so I won't have Hopefully you've got
- 27:11Speaker 7: a jet pack in the.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Something you for the.
- 27:15Speaker 4: Last half mile everything pat myself.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Down at the starts. He's going to switch it for
- 27:21Speaker 1: electric bike.
- 27:24Speaker 3: I thought this was a specialist bit, not a knee by.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, Adrian, I think we have another bit of music.
- 27:30Speaker 1: So there must be something else to do with mountains.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Not really, I couldn't really find anything, to be perfectly honest.
- 27:35Speaker 2: But what I did do last night, as it was Friday,
- 27:39Speaker 2: I always want a gig down I normally, and I
- 27:42Speaker 2: was lucky enough last night to go to the Asta
- 27:44Speaker 2: Theater in Deal when I saw one of my one
- 27:48Speaker 2: of my heroes I suppose from Squeeze, Chris Difford. He
- 27:53Speaker 2: was there telling stories about how he joined Squeeze and
- 27:59Speaker 2: different funny things which I can never say over everything.
- 28:02Speaker 2: It was quite quite blue some of it. But I
- 28:05Speaker 2: thought I'm gonna wack on a squeeze record today.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Wasn't before you do? That was? What's that chap? It
- 28:11Speaker 1: lives around the whitstable. It was he the keyboard man Jews.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Yeah was he in? It was he was Squeeze. What
- 28:19Speaker 1: was he?
- 28:19Speaker 3: Yes?
- 28:19Speaker 2: He was so yeah many many years yeah yeah, and
- 28:23Speaker 2: then he obviously went on to jewels, holland later with
- 28:26Speaker 2: jewels and whatever. Anyway, this one is this is the
- 28:30Speaker 2: B side of labor with love and I think probably
- 28:33Speaker 2: the listeners will remember quite a lot of these. You
- 28:36Speaker 2: remember back in the early eighties they did records. They
- 28:40Speaker 2: all had lots of their hits all jammed together. Oh yes, yeah,
- 28:46Speaker 2: this is the squeeze version of this one on is
- 28:48Speaker 2: called squabs on.
- 28:49Speaker 3: Forty fab.
- 28:53Speaker 2: He's gonna play it away, take it away, squeeze.
- 29:03Speaker 1: I've done her. Cousins, are you.
- 29:10Speaker 8: Tell you? Great?
- 29:14Speaker 9: Schid bab stills me.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Because three years o whatever be ever.
- 29:37Speaker 9: The you need Sisily from the rocks about the past,
- 29:40Speaker 9: the colombast Anders said, the grass the stories in the
- 29:44Speaker 9: goobos is tiler considerate. She doesn't mind her languages looking
- 29:49Speaker 9: and she don't. She lets us into your.
- 29:51Speaker 8: Sister and goos.
- 29:53Speaker 9: Sleepy, what's the finer fires that a narrow sasat and
- 29:57Speaker 9: dive copround and say sistem, that's.
- 30:19Speaker 3: Okay.
- 30:21Speaker 8: I never thought it happened. I'm the one to call,
- 30:27Speaker 8: but now I haven't done it.
- 30:28Speaker 1: But she doesn't have the Russian for someone.
- 30:31Speaker 8: With a passion. I said you brother, but she said
- 30:35Speaker 8: a baby.
- 30:38Speaker 7: That's so.
- 30:42Speaker 8: Now have done they got too good? Said I've done
- 30:52Speaker 8: better against mom does the thing shouting?
- 31:04Speaker 4: Holidays start and I.
- 31:08Speaker 8: Feel like w T facs so going muscles ship putting
- 31:21Speaker 8: muscle see ships from she may go to a SIMpad
- 31:41Speaker 8: been play.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Was closed. That was adult.
- 31:52Speaker 4: I didn't got a maybe outo.
- 32:00Speaker 8: But with that fends the ball. The crowns trying to be.
- 32:07Speaker 9: The bo knocking around and the bot be.
- 32:11Speaker 1: A spot.
- 32:15Speaker 8: Man.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Bob would be the spa if you ever changed your mind.
- 32:26Speaker 8: But you do crowns a time.
- 32:29Speaker 3: And that you will be going another seconds ago.
- 32:32Speaker 1: You have the Boston to get the winds of the ball.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Ner Ni ne snight the Mi.
- 32:47Speaker 8: Bob me with the shade had to have a lot
- 32:52Speaker 8: of budget.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Don l Bank go.
- 32:58Speaker 10: Back girl, there you go, squeeze and squabs on forty.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, because we are swiftly running out of time
- 33:43Speaker 1: and I do want to get this in. This is
- 33:45Speaker 1: only a very quick read out. It's about sea swimming now.
- 33:48Speaker 1: It's good news for the sea swimmers along Granville Parade.
- 33:51Speaker 1: That's the section where the folks and Rowing club have
- 33:53Speaker 1: their premises as it's officially been designated a deafora bathing
- 33:57Speaker 1: water beach now DEFRA stands for Department of Environment, Food
- 34:01Speaker 1: and Rural Areas and this means that, according to the
- 34:04Speaker 1: Gove UK website, the bathing season which officially is from
- 34:08Speaker 1: the fifteenth to May to the thirtieth of September, so
- 34:12Speaker 1: the water quality will be monitored during that period. But
- 34:15Speaker 1: as we all know, several of our seawater swimmers going
- 34:18Speaker 1: all year round mat but this is still good news now.
- 34:22Speaker 1: When I went to the park round last Saturday along
- 34:24Speaker 1: the Leaze on a Saturday, I normally go up onto
- 34:27Speaker 1: that parapet, the big large section overlooking the Lees Cliff
- 34:30Speaker 1: Hall and count the number of swimmers. And there was
- 34:33Speaker 1: a beautiful day and I was amazed to see there
- 34:36Speaker 1: was no swimmers in the water. At all. How what
- 34:38Speaker 1: was that? I thought? Anyway, So browsing through my social
- 34:41Speaker 1: media and news feed later on, I saw that former
- 34:44Speaker 1: guest of the show, Kirsty Hogbin, who is a sea
- 34:47Speaker 1: swim confidence coach, asked all the swimmers to join her
- 34:50Speaker 1: at the Granville Beach first celebratory dip, swim or paddle,
- 34:55Speaker 1: and judging by the fantastic group photo, there must have
- 34:58Speaker 1: been about forty of them all in the sea all together.
- 35:00Speaker 1: So anyway, there's good news for all the local sea
- 35:03Speaker 1: swimmers as the sewage outfall really is a problem. But
- 35:07Speaker 1: that's another another story. We won't go into that. Okay, now, Cassi,
- 35:11Speaker 1: you're back to you now. You keep speaking to all
- 35:13Speaker 1: these people on TikTok. Are you speaking to all at once?
- 35:17Speaker 1: Or is there just one person you want to say
- 35:19Speaker 1: hello to?
- 35:19Speaker 7: No, it's been a great communities for this, so there's
- 35:22Speaker 7: so many new people that I've come across as well.
- 35:26Speaker 7: So I'm kind of learning TikTok as I go, yeah, yeah,
- 35:29Speaker 7: so we're live now, because I thought, you know what,
- 35:31Speaker 7: why not?
- 35:32Speaker 1: Why not? That's great? Yeah?
- 35:33Speaker 7: Great?
- 35:34Speaker 1: And something I think is very very important when every
- 35:38Speaker 1: guest comes in is there must be a list of
- 35:40Speaker 1: people that have helped you and along this journey right
- 35:44Speaker 1: from the time that you had to you know, you
- 35:46Speaker 1: said you'd do it. So just give us a few
- 35:48Speaker 1: thank yous and hellos and it's your turn.
- 35:50Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, oh god, there's so many people. I
- 35:54Speaker 7: mean everyone in Guildford has been amazing. Like I've only
- 35:57Speaker 7: been in Guilford for two months and the mount that
- 36:00Speaker 7: I've just just inundated by so much support. I mean,
- 36:04Speaker 7: I'm even having conversations with people having a few nights
- 36:07Speaker 7: ago where they're.
- 36:08Speaker 4: Like, Cassie, I'm seeing all your stories. I'm getting a bike.
- 36:16Speaker 7: Exactly, and it's just even that it's like I'm not asking,
- 36:19Speaker 7: I'm not doing anything, you know, to promote that, but
- 36:23Speaker 7: I am just having a great time while I'm doing
- 36:25Speaker 7: the training, and I guess that's all I want to
- 36:27Speaker 7: you know, have.
- 36:29Speaker 4: Have it come across.
- 36:30Speaker 7: So yeah, I mean it's yeah, it's been great. I mean,
- 36:33Speaker 7: my parents obviously always support, so thank you Mom and Dad.
- 36:37Speaker 4: I'm doing another weird and wacky thing. So proud.
- 36:42Speaker 7: But yeah, I've just got lots of friends, Sam and
- 36:44Speaker 7: Elliott I have been amazing and yeah, I do want
- 36:47Speaker 7: to say thank you to them kind of thank you
- 36:49Speaker 7: as well for actually just like I guess signing me
- 36:53Speaker 7: up because I wouldn't have been able to I wouldn't
- 36:55Speaker 7: be doing this.
- 36:56Speaker 4: So I feel like friends do just push you in
- 36:58Speaker 4: the right direction.
- 36:59Speaker 1: You had any sort of been out of the bike
- 37:01Speaker 1: and you've had any low points where you thought, you know,
- 37:04Speaker 1: what am I doing? And then Sam and Elliot might
- 37:06Speaker 1: say well come on, you know a bit of encouragement.
- 37:08Speaker 4: So my bike's called Villia Tristina.
- 37:10Speaker 7: It's an Italian brand, and my nickname for it has
- 37:14Speaker 7: been testing Tina because she has put me through. So yeah,
- 37:19Speaker 7: there've been moments we've kind of had this like sort
- 37:20Speaker 7: of situationship relationship where I'm like, I don't think we're
- 37:24Speaker 7: going to get through this girl, you know, relationship with
- 37:27Speaker 7: a bike.
- 37:29Speaker 4: It's been the journey.
- 37:30Speaker 7: But yeah, like the first month, I've needed to have
- 37:33Speaker 7: so much time with the bike to just learn all
- 37:37Speaker 7: of the different aspects because there's so much to it.
- 37:39Speaker 4: It's not just you get on your bike and you go.
- 37:43Speaker 7: So I'm just yeah, there's been moments I haven't had
- 37:46Speaker 7: lows is in like oh I can't do this, but
- 37:48Speaker 7: I have had moments where I mean a few weeks
- 37:51Speaker 7: ago I think it was now I can't remember, but
- 37:54Speaker 7: so many rides, but a few weeks ago I had
- 37:57Speaker 7: the chain come off three times.
- 37:59Speaker 4: Thank you. Yeah.
- 38:03Speaker 7: So I've had the chain come off three times in
- 38:05Speaker 7: one ride and i was thinking, oh, come on, just
- 38:08Speaker 7: don't do this to me. So I've gone to bike shop. No,
- 38:11Speaker 7: so gone to the bike shop. Got it like obviously adjusted.
- 38:15Speaker 7: But I've had a great community from the bike shop
- 38:17Speaker 7: people as well in Guildford. They're just like giving me
- 38:20Speaker 7: all these tips and tricks and they're just like if
- 38:22Speaker 7: you ever need any support, just come by. And they've
- 38:24Speaker 7: just give me so much freebe for it and they
- 38:26Speaker 7: just and obviously I've been giving them a shout out
- 38:28Speaker 7: because it's like this is so lovely. Just I'm not
- 38:31Speaker 7: doing anything to you know, I'm not asking for a freebee,
- 38:34Speaker 7: but I'm getting so much.
- 38:35Speaker 4: From people and it's like so lovely and that's what
