- 0:01The right to offend is not some pesky little part of freedom of
- 0:05speech that we have to put up with.
- 0:07It is the heart and soul and lungs of freedom of speech.
- 0:11It is the coursing lifeblood of human progress.
- 0:14It is the instigator of liberty and modernity and science and
- 0:18understanding. What a laughingstock today's
- 0:22student leaders are that they can so casually dismiss the
- 0:26right to be offensive without realizing that their lovely,
- 0:30enlightened lives are the gifts of individuals who gave offence.
- 0:36Offensiveness is not just something we have to
- 0:38begrudgingly accept. Offensiveness is the motor of
- 0:42human progress. Now broadcasting from the Right
- 0:46to Offend media studios in sunny South Florida, bringing you the
- 0:51latest in politics, current events, art and pop culture.
- 0:55This is the Whitfield Report live with Sam Whitfield.
- 1:00But giving offense is good. In fact, it's essential all.
- 1:09Righty folks. Good evening and welcome to
- 1:13tonight's edition of the Whitfield Report Podcast.
- 1:19I'm your host, Sam Woodfield, Recording Herald from right to
- 1:23Fun Media Studios here in South Florida.
- 1:27And joining me for tonight's show is Richard Maverick.
- 1:33We've had him on the show before, author of the Losers
- 1:39series, and Richard was kind of enough to join us.
- 1:46This is the first interview we've had back after the whole,
- 1:52you know, news a few weeks ago with Charlie Couric, a few
- 1:56guests, you know, understand what you've decided to postpone,
- 2:01you know, after that that happened.
- 2:03And it's just been really kind of a chaotic time for us all.
- 2:08But Richard put out a very movie, I don't know if you want
- 2:14to call it tribute, but just kind of a, you know, a video on
- 2:21Charlie and what he meant, you know, to Richard.
- 2:23And so I I found him very moving personally, as someone who met
- 2:29Charlie, you know, once as many listeners may or may not know.
- 2:35But anyway, Richard, welcome to the show.
- 2:39And how have you been, man? Thank you for having me, Sam.
- 2:42I've been pretty good. I've been busy, busy, busy
- 2:47trying to get the final edits done of the Volume 3 before we
- 2:53kick that over for release. I want to see the release dates.
- 2:56November 18th. The cover will get a facelift.
- 3:02There's already a new cover design for it, so the what you
- 3:06see behind me is the art copies so well.
- 3:09They are, well, they are copies. Still pretty good, man.
- 3:12I I have to say. I, you know, when I, I, I did
- 3:17them just on, on the Amazon cover creator thing and they
- 3:25turned out I got a, you know, you, you get a picture of it
- 3:28from Amazon, right? And I, I took a picture on my
- 3:33computer with my phone and I sent it, I, I posted it out.
- 3:37A few people are like, you know, you can't see it good.
- 3:40You know, you can't see the, the, the lettering good.
- 3:43It kind of blends too much. But when I actually got the
- 3:45physical copies in of the Ark, it turned out way better than
- 3:49than Amazon led me to believe it was going to so.
- 3:54Yeah, that. Yeah, that's the thing with like
- 3:57the whole cover crater I think I've noticed too.
- 4:01And also it helps out like a print copy of the books as well,
- 4:06just because like, particularly like if you're doing colors like
- 4:11Reds or yellows, like I, I've found that like, you know,
- 4:16sometimes like the yellows I use in my font are like a lot
- 4:22brighter or a lot darker and print they are on, on the
- 4:26computer when I'm, when I'm designing them or, you know,
- 4:31something like that. So it always, it always helps to
- 4:34have a, you know, approved copy to kind of just check over how
- 4:40things look not just in cover, but also in like page 4.
- 4:44Yeah. Adding them and what not so.
- 4:47I was in. I was in a little bit of a
- 4:49hurry. I didn't really let it.
- 4:52I just kind of, you know, I ordered, I don't know, 40 copies
- 4:56to give away total right off the bat.
- 4:59I didn't and got a hold of my other cover designer and said
- 5:04hey guy you got a couple weeks, take your time.
- 5:07Yeah, yeah. I mean that that sometimes,
- 5:11sometimes it's just stuff like that that I think people kind
- 5:14of, you know, who's track of that.
- 5:17That's why kind of the production part of it, you know,
- 5:20takes a bit longer is like I've, I've written, you know, like
- 5:25sometimes writing the story itself will only take like about
- 5:29like 6 months to a year or something.
- 5:31If you're writing a novella, 3 to 6 months, but then, you know,
- 5:35making sure that the proofs look good and whatnot.
- 5:38That's where I kind of the, you know, the time takes place.
- 5:43So and also you've been, you know, pretty good about
- 5:51promoting stuff on social media, despite the fact that Instagram
- 5:55seems to want to well, I don't know if kick you off is the
- 5:58term, but if you no longer have like.
- 6:03Enough numbers like. Yeah.
- 6:06Yeah, they, they booted me from doing live live because I was
- 6:11going live every Sunday and they booted me from it because I need
- 6:161000 followers to do it. So I, I at least figured out a
- 6:20cheat code for that. Did did a little video after the
- 6:24Charlie Kirk shooting and was able to post it and I was told
- 6:29that not the whole video posted but that's fine too so.
- 6:35Yeah, well, I, I, I saw that the whole video posted.
- 6:41You know, I, I know that this, this isn't like a political
- 6:43show, but I mean, I think it's pretty safe to say, you know,
- 6:47based on conversation, I know your politics and you know mine.
- 6:50Irregardless though, I mean, what was, how have you been
- 6:55doing with that whole I guess thing with Troy Kirk's passing?
- 7:00I mean, I've heard from, I've heard from multiple guests who
- 7:03have just been apartment apoplexic.
- 7:06I guess what is your kind of reaction?
- 7:08I think you had a pretty good, pretty measured take actually
- 7:13compared to some people. Compared compared I I've got the
- 7:17unpopular opinion that I think the Republican Party could have
- 7:25prevented this years ago and I and half because they could have
- 7:34with a Republican controlled Senate, House and Senate, they
- 7:39could have passed the bill years ago to shut down the
- 7:44unsubstantiated rhetoric, the racism, racism, racism.
- 7:49If you have a senator, you, you're a public servant.
- 7:54You work for me. And if you're going to call me a
- 7:57racist, you better be able to back that shit up.
- 8:01Yeah. OK, And if you can't back it up,
- 8:04if it's because I didn't vote the way you wanted me to, out
- 8:08the door, you go. Special election, replace the
- 8:11moron, get somebody else in. And I don't care if it's red or
- 8:15blue. The rhetoric's got to quit, but
- 8:19the Republicans make too much money off the division, just
- 8:22like the Democrats did. That's that's why they won't
- 8:26pass any kind of bill that'll shut that shit down.
- 8:30That's my, that's my big take on it.
- 8:32That's my big take away from the from the Charlie Kirk shooting
- 8:35is that it could have been prevented, but no one is willing
- 8:41to do it. It's so funny you say that,
- 8:43though, because like that's something that I even have
- 8:45particularly been, that's something I've actually been
- 8:48writing about. Not necessarily in like an odd,
- 8:50not necessarily in like a non fiction way.
- 8:52But that's one of the things kind of in my, in my series,
- 8:58Shadows of Deception, that like a lot of this division and
- 9:01whatnot, it almost seems to kind of be planned, so to speak, by
- 9:07both party elites. And you know, like I, I've got a
- 9:13few people who have been like, you know, well, Sam likes, I'm
- 9:18not one of these people that like tries to predict stuff to
- 9:22write in my books, Like I'm not going to do the whole Brad Thore
- 9:27things. But I mean, I've been in
- 9:28political commentary for a long for a long time.
- 9:32I've read, you know, I've talked to people in the, in the
- 9:36intelligence community. Granted, most of them are, are
- 9:39retired, but you know, Even so, like, I don't think a lot of
- 9:43this stuff is super hard to like, you know, see if you, if
- 9:47you, you know, observe things and, you know, so I, I think, I
- 9:53think Obama getting rid of like the Smith Munt act in particular
- 9:57was, you know, was pretty harmful.
- 10:01And, you know, it's like I've said, I don't really care if
- 10:06someone's like an evangelical or if they're like a, you know, or
- 10:11if they, you know, believe in the whole LGBTQ thing.
- 10:15Like I personally don't like either extreme, but you know,
- 10:19you're, you're welcome to have your opinion.
- 10:22My whole thing is when it gets to to the point where we where
- 10:28we can't even have a civil conversation, that's when I
- 10:31start to worry. And we've kind of seen,
- 10:34unfortunately, you know, the worst kind of, you know, the
- 10:41worst possible result of that. One of the things in my in the
- 10:461st edition of Our War that was released in 2020, that was
- 10:50something I talked about in the beginning of the book that I
- 10:53actually did remove in the second edition was we need to
- 10:56have a civil conversation. You need to get along.
- 11:01You need to talk to your neighbor.
- 11:02If you can't honestly talk politics with somebody, talk
- 11:07about football, talk about the weather, talk to your neighbor.
- 11:13You can be friends without agreeing on political ideology,
- 11:17which I also believe is replaced the religion.
- 11:22Yeah. I I I believe that the
- 11:25Republican and the Democrat party personally have become a
- 11:28religious divisions of religion for people.
- 11:32Oh yeah, totally. So.
- 11:35And I mean, granted, I'm, I'll be honest, I mean, I'm falling
- 11:39into the tribalism, you know, trap as much as any other person
- 11:43in the past, you know, which is kind of one of the reasons why I
- 11:49shifted over to writing fiction. You know, like the past five
- 11:55years was like I, you know, for my part, like I've recognized
- 12:00that, you know, that like, yeah, not everything that
- 12:04conservatives do is great either.
- 12:07And I mean, it does, it does kind of wear me some of the, you
- 12:11know, some of the radical, you know, elements that are taking
- 12:16place that are trying to take Charlie's place.
- 12:20And, you know, I think I've done a pretty good job of trying to
- 12:23call it both sides. But you know, kind of, I guess
- 12:30the unfortunate thing is I think the Shadows of Deception, you
- 12:34know, which is the title my series, they, they really are
- 12:38trying to, you know, to play us off against each other.
- 12:41Oh, absolutely. And I mean, I don't think
- 12:45unfortunately, it's not as simple as in my books where
- 12:49there's a secret cabal of, you know, of Spectre, like, you
- 12:54know, people plotting on a smoky boardroom.
- 12:57But like, I definitely think that, you know, the media
- 13:01certainly makes money off of all this division and it's just
- 13:08really unfortunate, so. It's like in my in my second
- 13:13book, volume 2, I had a conspiracy theory that I
- 13:18introduced toward the end of the book where one party wants gun
- 13:22control, yet they feed guns to the streets.
- 13:24One party wants the, you know, control on drugs, yet they feed
- 13:29drugs to the streets because they're both, they're both
- 13:34feeding off. Yeah.
- 13:37I, I outlined at the end of the book towards the end of volume
- 13:40to that both parties for for those watching this who don't
- 13:45know the basis for the books, one man's journey through the
- 13:48next American Civil War, I leave it open-ended.
- 13:52I throw a conspiracy theory or two, like I said in volume to,
- 13:56but I put it out there that it was both parties, that it wasn't
- 14:02that it was both parties. Every single bill they pass is
- 14:07to protect their power and to screw over the American people.
- 14:11It doesn't matter red or blue, they care about themselves.
- 14:15It's all there is to it. And that's where the division
- 14:19comes in. And that's where the unfortunate
- 14:22possible scenario similar to my book could could come into play.
- 14:28Yeah. Well, like, well, like I said,
- 14:31it seems like, I mean, I've said to people, I, I actually said
- 14:36this in the men's adventure fiction Discord.
- 14:39And I know it's kind of, it is mostly a political in there, but
- 14:43I, I said to a couple of the guys, I said it's very
- 14:46unsettling that some of the stuff and that I write that I
- 14:51write about. And credit to Jake Woodbury
- 14:54because he picked up immediately on the kind of what I was
- 14:57getting at. I said it's very unsettling that
- 15:00a lot of the stuff that I wrote in that I thought was fiction
- 15:04just five years ago is kind of coming.
- 15:08Coming true, yeah. Yeah, and like I said, like I'm
- 15:12not, I'm not even like a, a guy who was a political science
- 15:16major. I, I majored in English.
- 15:18I you know, like my extent of like political involvement was I
- 15:22ran a a chapter of the College Republicans in college, you
- 15:27know, so I'm a little more in tune to that.
- 15:29But you know, like I was never like a Paul signage or anything
- 15:33like that. But you know, just kind of, you
- 15:37know, doing the show and, you know, talking to authors, mostly
- 15:41military guys about their experiences and then doing like
- 15:44a a Wednesday news, you know, recap show, like it's, you know,
- 15:50and just kind of seeing what's going on in the news.
- 15:52It's, it's interesting what's going on.
- 15:57So anyway, well, you're on to book 3 now, Sir.
- 16:05So what can we expect from this installment?
- 16:10Well, I will say Book 3 is shorter than the other two
- 16:15books. And at first I was a little
- 16:18disheartened by the fact that it was shorter.
- 16:20And I was, I thought, well, you know, maybe I'll push it out,
- 16:22see if I can't. And then it occurred to me.
- 16:26Volume 1 takes place over the course of about a year.
- 16:30Volume 2 takes place over the course of about four to six
- 16:33months. Volume 3, right behind me, takes
- 16:36place over no more than 10 days. This is 10 days.
- 16:42This is 10 days in the life of the losers.
- 16:47And it is an intense 10 freaking days.
- 16:51So it's it's, it's certainly a interest.
- 16:54It's it's a very interesting ride.
- 16:57I've had a little bit of feedback on it already and guys
- 17:01are loving so. Yeah, I've, I mean, I, I don't
- 17:05know if you sent Jake Widmer a copy yet, but he he was saying
- 17:10like last time we talked, he he was like, he was a man.
- 17:15He said volume to I think is one of Richard's best, which at the
- 17:23time I which at the time I hadn't read volume 2 yet, but I
- 17:26I just finished it recently and I would agree.
- 17:30Yeah, it was definitely, even when you look at the second
- 17:35editions, the various changes that I did make regarding the,
- 17:40the the first book specifically Volume 2, when I wrote it as the
- 17:47first, as far as first editions were concerned, was my absolute
- 17:51best writing. And this book, Volume 3, again,
- 18:00I've elevated my writing from what it was even from Volume 2.
- 18:05And there's some surprises with this.
- 18:08There is some surprises and I'm not going to spoil them.
- 18:12I'm going to let, I'm going to let the readers find out.
- 18:16So that's always good. I I do have to ask you though,
- 18:22do you do you ever surprise yourself as an author?
- 18:29Oh yes, with like, with where your story goes.
- 18:32Yes, in fact, volume to there was several times where I'm
- 18:37like, wow, I didn't see that shit because you you planned
- 18:42something and it never the final meeting with King James was a
- 18:49great example in volume 2. And I had that I had that in my
- 18:56mind. I had told the story to a dozen
- 18:59people how that was going to go. And when I sat down and started
- 19:04writing, that's not what happened.
- 19:06And it just, it just, it was completely different from what I
- 19:12intended to write. And I had a few big surprises
- 19:17even in, in in volume 3, as I was right.
- 19:21And I said, oh, I should do that, you know, And there was a
- 19:26couple times his, his fingers were punching keys.
- 19:30And I got done read and I got done.
- 19:32And I looked up and I read what I wrote and I said, Oh my God, I
- 19:35didn't see that coming. Do you ever?
- 19:39So do you? I can't remember if I asked you
- 19:42this in the last episode, but are you someone who outlines or
- 19:46do you? Are you more of a pantser like
- 19:50like I am? I I will write down most of the
- 19:56time I will write down some bullet points.
- 20:00I want these three things to occur.
- 20:03Now I have to get there and I'll do it per chapter.
- 20:08And I had there was several times writing this one where I
- 20:16didn't see, you know, I, I, I wrote a bullet point.
- 20:20I said, OK, this is what's going to happen.
- 20:22This is where they're the the guys are going to be.
- 20:26And then as I got them there, I was like, holy crap, that was
- 20:29intense. So.
- 20:30Yeah, I'm, I'm kind of the same way.
- 20:34I, I don't really, I, I don't really do outlines, but like,
- 20:38like you all kind of do bullet points for kind of over, you
- 20:43know, kind of like the overview of a story that I have, you
- 20:48know, in my, in my head. And then what I'll do is
- 20:53generally, once I have like a list of kind of ideas and I just
- 20:59use my phone mainly, you know, I keep like like running, you
- 21:05know, notepad for each book. And what I'll do it is like all
- 21:11is all copy. I'll copy and paste that into
- 21:15ChatGPT and then have I'll ask you to be GPT.
- 21:20OK, here are my ideas. Where how would I structure
- 21:24these in an outline? And where would each, you know,
- 21:28theme or idea, kind of, you know, go and what chapter order.
- 21:33And sometimes it'll spit something out that I like and
- 21:36then, or sometimes it won't and I'll, I'll refine it, but then I
- 21:40start drafting from from there. And often times what happened is
- 21:48like other stuff will kind of come up, you know, to that will
- 21:53kind of fit, you know, in in future books as well.
- 21:58So like the book I'm writing right now, American Inferno for,
- 22:04you know, book 5 in shadows of deception.
- 22:07Initially I was just going to write about the whole Antifa,
- 22:13you know, kind of those riots that that are going on and that.
- 22:18But then once the but then once the Charlie Kirk thing happened,
- 22:23I was kind of like, well, it might somebody might think it's
- 22:27a bit early, but I feel like I have to kind of write about that
- 22:32or fit that into the narrative somehow.
- 22:35Because I do feel it kind of ties into the whole theme of,
- 22:41you know, of a terrorist group wanting to bring the country
- 22:44down from within or so I've kind of added elements like that into
- 22:50the books as well. So and that that's the other
- 22:53thing is sometimes at least I've noticed you're your second draft
- 23:00or in your final draft can be drastically different from your
- 23:05first draft or you know, you started out writing something
- 23:10so. Yeah, with, with this one, I had
- 23:17a series of notes, you know, I just in the, in the, in my
- 23:25phone. Next chapter X happens chapter
- 23:28after that rescue mission chapter after that, blah, blah,
- 23:32blah. And OK, so I, I, I sit down and
- 23:37sometimes I'll write it out in a notebook.
- 23:39If I, if I'm, if I can get just to get the wheels turning, I'll
- 23:43try to write it in a notebook. And I sat down.
- 23:48I've, I'm already coursed into chapter 4 or volume 4 and I was
- 23:55writing stuff out and I said, man, I don't like this.
- 23:58And I sat down and I thought about it and I tried writing
- 24:02what, what my mind was showing and it wasn't coming.
- 24:07It wasn't coming out on the notebook whatsoever.
- 24:11And I ended up sitting down in front of the computer and what
- 24:17originally in the 1st chapter was a paragraph turned into, you
- 24:26know, a paragraph of the story being told turned into 2 1/2
- 24:32pages of the action. So it it's, it's already turning
- 24:37out better than than where it was headed well.
- 24:39Well, that that's always good. Where do you think your
- 24:42strongest suit in writing has improved?
- 24:46You've mentioned that with each, you know, with each book you've
- 24:50improved and I think that's the case for every author.
- 24:53But is there is there a particular like area of writing
- 24:58that you felt you've improved on the most and you know where,
- 25:03where do you think you still? For me, the improvement is
- 25:08definitely in the details where telling the story.
- 25:17Now you can see it in your head, right?
- 25:23You, the reader, can read it and see what you can see the
- 25:28character on the bridge, so to speak.
- 25:33You can see them in an Overwatch position.
- 25:35You can see these things better now than you could before.
- 25:42And with volume three, well, that that strength is kind of
- 25:53the secret of the book, so I'm not going to ruin it.
- 26:00And what would you say is still your most like difficult aspect?
- 26:07Of I would say definitely the discipline of sitting down and
- 26:12getting, getting words on paper. That's the, that's my biggest
- 26:17problem. Because I am, yeah, we're, we're
- 26:19all busy, right. So sitting down and actually
- 26:25opening the laptop, you're getting up like this morning I
- 26:28was up at 4:20. I'm like, oh, the alarm goes off
- 26:31in 10 minutes. I'm really back down for, you
- 26:33know. And at about 6 O clock I got out
- 26:37of bed, 630 I think it was when I got out of bed and I could
- 26:42have used that two hours to open the laptop, do the work.
- 26:46So that's kind of where it's at at the moment is refining the
- 26:52discipline. I carry a notebook with me when
- 26:54I'm not working. When I'm working it's notes on
- 26:58cell phone. I, I have 7 or 8 notebooks with
- 27:03every book I've written so far in each one, you know, So I got
- 27:08to go back and oh, where, where, where's the notebook that I
- 27:11wrote that down in, you know, so organization would be another
- 27:16thing I'm not very good at. Yeah, what one thing that people
- 27:21have recommended to me that I probably should do is that like
- 27:24I need to write like a, they call it like a, they call it
- 27:28like a lore, a lore Bible. Because what I, which I get, I
- 27:33guess kind of keeps track of like everything in your, you
- 27:37know, universe that happens. Because what I, what I have
- 27:41tended to do is like, I'll go back and like reread.
- 27:45The only time I ever like really reread my books is like when I'm
- 27:51writing stuff for, you know, whatever new one I'm writing.
- 27:57And I'm like, OK, where, where did I leave off with X
- 28:03character? Where did I, you know, or what
- 28:08happened in this scene? And did I, did I leave a
- 28:12cliffhanger there or did I, you know, or did I wrap this
- 28:16storyline up or something like like, like that?
- 28:21So one question that wasn't there actually wanted to know
- 28:32from, from our previous podcast is who's your favorite character
- 28:37to write? And are there any self insert
- 28:42characters that you've put? There's definitely self
- 28:47insertion in characters. The character William has
- 28:52without a doubt has my background, has a lot of my
- 28:57personality traits. My favorite character that I've
- 29:01written actually though, is a character named Noah in a book
- 29:05that is not released. That was a fun character to
- 29:10write for me. I've had fun writing all of the
- 29:17losers as a whole and developing each one of these guys and
- 29:22taking them from average show nobody to you know, quote UN
- 29:27quote gunfighters. You know, they're not special
- 29:30OPS by any sense the word. They're just, they're, they're
- 29:32regular guys putting it in a real shit situation.
- 29:38And I've had a lot of fun writing those guys and had a lot
- 29:41of fun. You get to see their
- 29:46development, you get to see their change.
- 29:48You can see their arc and you're going to see quite a bit of
- 29:56change in in a couple of characters in Volume 3, change
- 30:01that I talked about with people in my little in my little group
- 30:08about doing with these guys. And so you're going to see
- 30:15you're going to see some big change with with the group here.
- 30:19Even with William, who has who kind of peaked pretty good as an
- 30:24overall leader of the group in volume to, you're going to see
- 30:28him hardline a little bit in volume 3 like you haven't seen
- 30:35him do so thus far. Interesting.
- 30:46So have you, do you think you're going to continue the losers
- 30:51series like is there? Are you?
- 30:55Are you are already planning for book 4?
- 30:58I'm already working on book four.
- 31:00I've got some outline notes, so where I'd I'd written, I started
- 31:08writing differently than what I ended up doing and I said, OK,
- 31:15well, how can I paste these two pieces together because it would
- 31:20work to paste them together. I found that that glue I needed
- 31:26and then I bounced to the next chapter that I'm going to focus
- 31:33on for this, and I made some notes and again, the discipline
- 31:42of it all, sit down, get the computer out, put it together,
- 31:47do it, put in the work, put in the time.
- 31:49So volume 3 is in the work. Sorry, Volume 4 is certainly in
- 31:53the works. This series, the Our War series,
- 31:58will end at book 5, the final chap.
- 32:01The final chapter's already written.
- 32:03I wrote it a year, year and a half ago, so.
- 32:07Is is that is that weird then to like kind of know how the series
- 32:16ends already but. So yes and no, because when I
- 32:23wrote the first book, as you, as you know, is any author, the
- 32:29beginning is the hardest part. Yeah.
- 32:33And about midpoint of the first book, I said, oh, I know how
- 32:39it's going to end. And the way I ended the first
- 32:42one, of course I picked right up the very next page for Volume 2,
- 32:49and I knew right then and there where Volume 2 is going to end.
- 32:56It didn't. Again, there was a lot of
- 32:58surprises, but I knew where that last, what that last moment
- 33:03would be. So Volume 3 was easy because
- 33:07again, you're picking up where you left off.
- 33:08Volume 4 has already been, because I'm not, I'm going to
- 33:11spoil it. I guess it's, it's going to be a
- 33:14year. People forget anyway.
- 33:15But Volume 4 does not pick up where Volume 3 left off.
- 33:19I'm doing that. I am doing that intentionally.
- 33:21So. So starting this book was a
- 33:25little difficult. So are you are you doing like a
- 33:28prequel then is that is that kind of or?
- 33:31The events the where it ends will get talked about later in
- 33:36volume. Four.
- 33:37OK, Yeah. I I.
- 33:39Just just not first page stuff. But again, we've got, we've got
- 33:44well over a year for that to to come to pass so.
- 33:48Yeah, I the, the instinct, the thing that's interesting for me
- 33:54is like, like writing a prequel and writing for characters to
- 34:03like technically in the present day timeline of Shadows of
- 34:08Deception are, are already dead. But then like, you know, going
- 34:14back and like, you know, writing these prequel series, like take
- 34:20writing these prequels that like take place in the 80s and
- 34:22whatnot. It's like, OK, they're alive,
- 34:26but then how do we so like, hey, why do they matter, You know, as
- 34:33why should we follow them in their exploits if we already
- 34:36know they're they're going to, you know, be killed off, you
- 34:40know, some, some at some point. That's always that's always
- 34:46interesting is when you're writing a character that you
- 34:50know is going to die at some point and following, you know,
- 34:55their stories in a way that's actually one of that's actually
- 34:58one of the things that I mean, not to not to name drop one of
- 35:02the big ones, but that is one thing I'm very curious about
- 35:05with the new Jack Carr book, you know, cry Havoc that, yeah,
- 35:11follows Reese's dad because we know that we kind of already
- 35:17know that Reese's dad was a SEAL during the Vietnam War and we
- 35:21know that he had killed off at some point, like right before
- 35:26like 911 or something like that. So then kind of like my not I'm
- 35:33not interested in, I don't mean this to sound condescending, but
- 35:36it's like, OK, we already know that he's going to die.
- 35:39So I'm like, what is about his story?
- 35:41Oh, but that story, that story has me.
- 35:45And again, I and I, I, I understand your point, but at
- 35:50the same time you've been given enough and I, I'm, I'm behind on
- 35:55my jet car reading, but you've been given enough teasers about
- 36:03his father's life that the curiosity is what has has me
- 36:09gripped on cry head. I'm, I'm curious enough just
- 36:13because like I have neighbors who I've, I've one neighbor in
- 36:19particular who's, you know, who served in Vietnam.
- 36:24He wasn't special operations group that I know of, but he
- 36:27knew a lot of, of SOG guys. And so I'm interested in it from
- 36:36that perspective. And I mean, yeah, I think, I
- 36:40think Tom Reese, you know, could be compelling.
- 36:44I think especially as, you know, as also the TV series and
- 36:49whatnot gets developed. So which has been very, very
- 36:58interesting as well. I don't know.
- 36:59I don't know if you've seen the new Terminal series with Taylor
- 37:05Kitsch, but I I just finished that and it was pretty
- 37:09interesting. I have actually not watched TV
- 37:13in months. Well, good on you.
- 37:18I, my, I've got my, my TV sit right over here when I get home,
- 37:24actually first thing in the morning when I get home, it
- 37:26doesn't matter. I I turn the TV on, I Scroll
- 37:30down, I hit the Pandora radio and I listen to the music while
- 37:34I'm cooking, while I'm doing the dishes, while I'm writing.
- 37:38It's the music in the background.
- 37:40I've had no hard interest in sitting down and watching
- 37:43anything lately. I don't really want I don't
- 37:46really watch much either as far as like Current TV that that's
- 37:51like the only thing that I've watched like contemporary that's
- 37:56like, you know, more modern. Like right now.
- 37:59I'm actually I'm rewatching the the the original run of Dexter
- 38:03right now. Nice the.
- 38:05The show, the Showtime series, I'm like there, I'm like, there
- 38:10are enough series in the past, like, you know, I've watched.
- 38:13They're worth the rewatched, like I don't, you know, and
- 38:19plus, like I'm I always tend to read like books from like other
- 38:24authors in the in the community, like I've got plenty of
- 38:29entertainment. You know, Oh yeah.
- 38:32Just with reading too. Yeah.
- 38:35So and then I imagine too, I don't know if you've shared,
- 38:44have you shared much publicly about your career or?
- 38:49Not too much. Current job is post office.
- 38:55OK. What I did before that, I spent
- 38:5820, better than 20 years of my life in the military.
- 39:01Surplus business with my family, right?
- 39:06Maybe it's time for a career change.
- 39:08I don't know. Toying with it now What So.
- 39:13Well, I'm, the reason I bring that up is I'm, I'm just curious
- 39:16because I, I knew, I know that you, I know, I know that you
- 39:20work in the post office. So I'm not sure.
- 39:23Yeah, I I talked about it. I talked about it in the lives a
- 39:29few times where I brought it up. But I just and at this point I'm
- 39:36thinking maybe it's time for a career change.
- 39:38Do you ever? Do you get much like downtime
- 39:43for like reading or listening to like podcasts or anything like
- 39:47that during? The So no, not during the day,
- 39:50absolutely not. And here as of late, even my
- 39:54reading is a little backlogged. I'm still trying to finish up
- 39:58Fade in. I've only got a few chapters of
- 40:02that left. And then of course, I've got a
- 40:04very expensive library behind me and ahead of me on the opposite
- 40:09wall. I mean, there's 200 and 5300
- 40:12books in this house right now and I got a couple in particular
- 40:17lined up next real quick. I've got a Brad Thor.
- 40:20I've got. I am going to jump into the
- 40:24world of Stephen King in November just to give that a
- 40:30whirl while I continue to write in the Dad life and work, work,
- 40:39work, work. Yeah, Speaking of fade in, I
- 40:43mean, that's a, that's a, that's a terrific book.
- 40:47Yes, it is. I just finished it and I I don't
- 40:52know if you saw him, I actually had Kyle on a few a few months
- 40:58ago now and man, terrific guy. It also could not be nicer.
- 41:06Yeah. I mean, he's just, he's super
- 41:09down to earth. And like I was, I was really
- 41:14nervous about like interviewing about first just because like
- 41:17I've because like I had never really, I hadn't read the Mitch
- 41:21Rat books until I got into college And I only started
- 41:26reading about like a year before Kyle took over this series.
- 41:30And then when Kyle did, I was still in college.
- 41:34So like, I was like 20. I was like 20, you know, 21
- 41:39years old. And then so like to be
- 41:42interviewing Kyle like just a decade later was like, that was
- 41:47pretty surreal. That's awesome it.
- 41:49Was like, it was like, you know, hey man, like I've, I've been a
- 41:53fan for, you know, as long as you've been writing the the rap
- 41:58series and so. That was.
- 42:00That was really cool. And I don't the I don't want to
- 42:06spoil anything but the way that, you know, fade and ends.
- 42:09I don't, I don't, I don't know if there's going to be a sequel
- 42:12or. Not.
- 42:13It's like it's one of those things where it could go either
- 42:17way. I'm, I'm hoping that he
- 42:19continues to write, whether it be with the Fade character or
- 42:22with other things, because I think, you know, I think he's
- 42:27really talented and I think he, he deserves a lot more credit
- 42:32than just being like, you know, the guy who took over for Vince
- 42:35Flynn. Obviously that's going to be a
- 42:37huge part of his legacy. Yeah.
- 42:39But I think Kyle's tone is very different in his own writing
- 42:46than Vince Flynn books. And.
- 42:48That I know, and that that's good.
- 42:51Yeah, I've got, I've got several of Kyle's books on the shelf.
- 42:55And like I said, I it's been a roller coaster ride and for the
- 43:01last couple years and trying to get, trying to balance, balance
- 43:07life and get back to the reading like I had been.
- 43:14And it's here lately, it has been OK.
- 43:19I've got the time to read, but I really need to focus on this
- 43:23part of the next project or this part of that project and I
- 43:28currently have 5 or 6 open projects on my computer.
- 43:34I'm going to spoil this. This will be in the official
- 43:38release copy of Buying 3, but I am planning to put out three
- 43:43next year. Wow.
- 43:45Oh, wow. Somebody, actually, Eric Bishop
- 43:49had invited me onto a project. And the timing for that was
- 43:54really weird because I had just wrote the final chapter for the
- 44:02our worst series. And in the final chapter I
- 44:05mentioned and I, I just wrote it on in a notebook, which is in
- 44:09the pile of notebooks over there.
- 44:12But I mentioned this female character who had never appeared
- 44:15in a book yet. And Bishop reaches out to me and
- 44:20he says, OK, why don't you be part of this project?
- 44:23You got to write about a female character that has appeared or
- 44:28will appear in your books. Well sweet, I got 1.
- 44:33Yeah, I actually, I know exactly what you're talking about
- 44:36because I had too and then Matt and.
- 44:39Chat and he ended up backing out of the project.
- 44:42We were him and I were discussing it and I said well
- 44:45the hell with it I'm I'm going to write your story anyway.
- 44:47I've already started and I thought, well I'll make a
- 44:50novella. And then I had a fan contact me
- 44:55and say, well, I want to know more about this guy over here
- 44:59and that guy over there. You should write novellas about
- 45:02them. And I'm like, you know, it's
- 45:04kind of a good idea. I'm already working on one
- 45:06anyway, right? And I was kind of pacing around,
- 45:10talking to myself. That's how I how I think.
- 45:12And I said, oh shit, I've got the perfect 1.
- 45:15And I gave the title away in volume 3.
- 45:17Interesting. So you'll see.
- 45:22You'll it with the official release copy, you're going to
- 45:25get the title, and then you'll see where I gave the title away
- 45:28after the fact anyways. Yeah, without even realizing
- 45:32what I was doing. Yeah, another so that yeah.
- 45:37So that was The funny thing with with that individuality in my
- 45:43series was an initially like I had I've written the character
- 45:49of Jason Miller, Night at the Vagina as like a side character.
- 45:53And I was going to come off like in book book 3.
- 45:59But then one of the beta readers, a friend I went to
- 46:02school with in college was like, I don't think you should have
- 46:05called this guy off. In fact, like he's one of the
- 46:08most fascinating characters. Like I'd like to I'd like to see
- 46:11a novella about him. So then that's kind of one.
- 46:16That's why I did and it really thin well, kind of because at
- 46:21that time, you know, the men's adventure fiction, the Veritas
- 46:25guys, that was when they started doing the whole western theme,
- 46:30you know, type of thing. So I'm like, well, this could be
- 46:34an interesting, you know, kind of way to, you know, put this
- 46:38character out there. So I, I did, I, you know, I
- 46:42still published my own implant print.
- 46:44But as it turns out, like, not the videline I think is the
- 46:48best, is like one of my best sellers this year.
- 46:55You know, sometimes you got to give the fans what they want.
- 46:57Oh, yeah. You know, even even if, even if
- 47:01you're not, you know, fully expecting.
- 47:05Because sometimes what the audience wants is different from
- 47:08what you know, you might think as.
- 47:11There was this there's this spin off idea that I actually had
- 47:16sense volume to the original release of volume to back in 22.
- 47:24And it was something Jeff and I kind of talked about Jeff Clark
- 47:28when I was on with him those all those years ago.
- 47:33So the idea of doing spin offs was already already there, but
- 47:40to take it to the level, you know, and then then the the the
- 47:45conversation with Bishop and turning that project into
- 47:49something and then going forward with other projects like, OK,
- 47:54this could be fun. Yeah, have you, have you ever
- 47:57considered like writing any like stories or series outside of the
- 48:02Losers? So the one one of the one of the
- 48:07projects that's that's completed to a degree on my computer, meet
- 48:14the monster, the character of Noah I had told you about.
- 48:18I have 60 query letters out for that right now.
- 48:25I'm going to put out another 60 in the next 30 days.
- 48:30I am seeking representation because this book I do believe
- 48:33is unique and yes it is intended to be a series.
- 48:39At this point I've started putting together the beginning
- 48:43of the next book for that. There was another series ish
- 48:50that I had started back in early 23 that's still open on the
- 48:55computer and just it's always here, I just haven't jumped on
- 48:58it yet. So, so you think, so you, you've
- 49:03self published the Loser series, but with this new one, you're,
- 49:07you're, you're going to go more traditional, you're thinking.
- 49:12That's what I would like to see happen with a yes.
- 49:17In interesting and and you've you've never had anything
- 49:22traditionally published. No.
- 49:24Before. No.
- 49:26OK, so so that will be if it happens, it'll be a a new
- 49:31experience for. For all the way.
- 49:34Yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
- 49:36It is a project that I had the idea for when I was writing the
- 49:41first Our War back in 2017, when I first started writing it.
- 49:48And I didn't actually begin writing it until 23.
- 49:51And then I just, I couldn't stop writing it.
- 49:55It was, it was extremely therapeutic and a lot of fun.
- 49:59Yeah. So.
- 50:01No, those are, those are always that those are always the best,
- 50:05you know, the ones that are kind of therapeutic.
- 50:11You know, that is that is one thing though, too, like I guess
- 50:14with traditional traditional publishing, I mean, I published
- 50:18my I I guess kind of the traditional publishing with
- 50:22Veritas for some all my short stories that, you know, one
- 50:26thing that I guess is, is always, you know, your stories
- 50:32of, you know, authors self-publishing then because
- 50:36they give the right away to their stores, they have no, you
- 50:39know, they don't own their own franchise anymore, something
- 50:43like that. So it's kind of like, OK, so
- 50:46which one of your children do you, you know, give away to, you
- 50:52know, the publisher or something like that?
- 50:56So, so yeah, that's interesting. So you've got Losers Volume 3
- 51:07coming out in November and then where's kind of your rear road
- 51:15map from there, do you think, is this going to be the only book
- 51:21you release this year? Are you?
- 51:25That'll be, that'll be it for 25, but I have two novellas and
- 51:32Volume 4 planned for next year for 26.
- 51:37And we'll see see how, without trying to rush too much, we will
- 51:42see how quickly I can get out the first of the two novellas
- 51:47for net for 20 seconds. That well, that's awesome and
- 51:50and it's certainly ambitious, you know, to do to do 2 novellas
- 51:57plus. Yeah.
- 51:59Novel I, you know, I've, I usually just do like 2 to 3
- 52:04novellas a year and that like, that's enough as is.
- 52:10And then you know, the the other the other thing too.
- 52:12I don't know about you, but like one of the challenges I face is
- 52:15like trying to figure out when to release things.
- 52:20Yeah, yeah. My, for me, I would not mind.
- 52:25I'm not saying this is how it's going to be, but I would not
- 52:28mind seeing the first novella release January, February.
- 52:34As far as the second one, I was, that's where the torn portion is
- 52:40in my mind. Would I release the second one
- 52:43before volume 4 or after that? I don't know you.
- 52:49We'll just have to see how it goes.
- 52:51Yeah, well, I mean, you've got, you seem to have a game plan and
- 52:55that's, you know, more than a lot of authors do just, you
- 52:59know, pants things. So, and you're still, I know
- 53:04you're not doing the live streams, but you're still doing
- 53:07or are you doing the live streams still?
- 53:10I tried doing live on Facebook and they boot it after 30 days
- 53:18where Instagram you can still go back and watch my lives from
- 53:21last year. So I'm going to do probably
- 53:28little short videos that I can post in place of the live kind
- 53:33of talk about the same thing, give people updates and you
- 53:37know, it just won't be with people adding commentary or
- 53:41asking questions. Tried maybe like doing YouTube
- 53:43or like some stack or anything like that because I.
- 53:46Know a couple of guys. One of the guys I know
- 53:51recommended the rumble thing that was recommended to me.
- 54:00But at this point I'm going to try to consolidate my plates a
- 54:05little bit and try to get more work done.
- 54:09And if if I, if I do a little pre recorded thing that I throw
- 54:13up on a Sunday or on a Wednesday for people to watch and you
- 54:22know, ask me questions during the week that I answer on the
- 54:24weekend, then that's what I'll end up doing for now.
- 54:27Yeah. Well if if you are ever
- 54:29interested in doing like any live stream type of things, just
- 54:32let me know and I'm always helpful to how about what that?
- 54:37Absolutely. Podcasting for a while, but
- 54:42anyway, Well, Richard Ware, can people find you in your books?
- 54:49They can find me on Instagram and X at our Maverick books on
- 54:55Facebook, Richard Maverick books.com or Richard Maverick
- 54:58Books no.com there. Not yet anyway, and all the
- 55:03books can be found. There's nothing up yet for
- 55:08Volume 3 as I was waiting for to finish the edits, which I'll
- 55:13have wrapped up this weekend, and then the e-book will be
- 55:16available just as quick as it can be.
- 55:18But the books can be found on Amazon.
- 55:20Well, yeah, we'll be, I'll be sure to link all of your stuff
- 55:24in the show notes and I, you know, once the book is out, let
- 55:31me know and I'd be happy to, you know, have you back on or to.
- 55:34Absolutely. For you.
- 55:36Absolutely. And I mean, I want to thank you
- 55:39for your time and you know, I know it's, it's kind of been a
- 55:44crazy last few weeks, but appreciate you coming on anyway.
- 55:48Especially and I I appreciate you for having me.
- 55:51Anytime and so folks, go and check out Richard's books, the
- 55:57looser series. I think you're going to like it.
- 55:59And I do have AI do have one of the challenge coins around here
- 56:02somewhere. I think it's on my my other
- 56:05desk. But thanks for tuning in, folks,
- 56:08and we'll talk it down the road. The right to offend is not some
- 56:17pesky little part of freedom of speech that we have to put up
- 56:20with. It is the heart and soul and
- 56:22lungs of freedom of speech. It is the coursing lifeblood of
- 56:26human process. It is the instigator of liberty
- 56:30and modernity and science and understanding.
- 56:33What a laughing stock today's student leaders are that they
- 56:38can so casually dismiss the right to be offensive without
- 56:42realizing that their lovely, enlightened lives are the gifts
- 56:46of individuals who gave offence. Offensiveness is not just
- 56:51something we have to begrudgingly accept.
- 56:54Offensiveness is the motor of human progress.
