Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Behind The Pie With THOMAS IAN NICHOLAS From AMERICAN PIE
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My name is Thomas E and Nicholas. Of course you
- 0:02Speaker 1: might know me better as Kevin from American Pie. Uh
- 0:06Speaker 1: though the die hard fans know me as Henn re
- 0:10Speaker 1: rod Man Garner from Rookie of the Year. But little
- 0:15Speaker 1: did you know unless you've already seen my tin band
- 0:18Speaker 1: tour tips on Heavy Magazine, then I have a di
- 0:22Speaker 1: y uh punk band, well not really punk, I guess
- 0:25Speaker 1: pop punk band, you do?
- 0:28Speaker 2: He did right, thanks to Johnny Thomas. Always a pleasure.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I'm always a pleasure. Do you like I think? I
- 0:34Speaker 1: think my intro pretty much just covered the whole interview
- 0:39Speaker 1: to pub.
- 0:42Speaker 2: But what we forgot to say an intro I was
- 0:44Speaker 2: that you are retaining to Australia with American Pie. He
- 0:47Speaker 2: might not for a very limited number of shows. Stopped
- 0:50Speaker 2: next week in one Gong on July to sixteenth, and
- 0:53Speaker 2: he hit Sydney and Brisbane, Melbourne. This hate god on,
- 0:57Speaker 2: there might be finish Adelite on July the twenty third light.
- 1:00Speaker 2: It seems like I need last week you hear? Have
- 1:01Speaker 2: you even a chime to unpack it?
- 1:04Speaker 1: Well? The thing is is that I worked for ten
- 1:07Speaker 1: years from twenty fifteen to twenty twenty five to get
- 1:10Speaker 1: my first tour in Australia. So many failed attempts, but
- 1:14Speaker 1: I never give up. This is retribution. Yeah, well it's
- 1:19Speaker 1: like retribution. It's kind of like you know, when you
- 1:22Speaker 1: work hard at something, you may not get it when
- 1:25Speaker 1: you want it, but eventually, like the landslide, happens. So
- 1:29Speaker 1: I'm making up for lost time.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Well, because it's probably the whole song, I'll be dissociated with.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Music gets the quickest sped around in anyone ever coming
- 1:38Speaker 2: back to Australia. What is it about the country? Is
- 1:40Speaker 2: it the sun? Is it the surf? Is me what
- 1:44Speaker 2: he's coming back for?
- 1:46Speaker 1: Well, it's it's my It's my roots on my mom's
- 1:49Speaker 1: side of the family. My grandmother was born in Western Australia,
- 1:53Speaker 1: my mom's mom. So I visited my family there back
- 1:58Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety and and my lineage goes back even
- 2:02Speaker 1: farther since Ned Kelly was my great great cousin. So
- 2:07Speaker 1: that's why I've got two shows in Melbourne.
- 2:10Speaker 2: The Spirit of Ned Shall be with you. But that's
- 2:18Speaker 2: out there, who din't I like all three of you?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Is like Thummas was one of the styles of the
- 2:22Speaker 2: American Pie Maybe franchise, but you travel the world bringing
- 2:25Speaker 2: Joy and Him from that movie to fans. But how
- 2:28Speaker 2: long you been doing the show for in this format?
- 2:32Speaker 1: Well, I mean I've been touring the world for about
- 2:34Speaker 1: eighteen years. I used to just play about forty shows
- 2:39Speaker 1: a year, but then it kind of grew to eighty
- 2:42Speaker 1: and now I'm I'm sitting well over one hundred shows
- 2:44Speaker 1: a year. The American Pie Emo Night started about a
- 2:48Speaker 1: year ago, and it was sort of this this concept
- 2:54Speaker 1: of nostalgia. The first inception of it was I've done
- 2:59Speaker 1: retro screenings of American Pie like I did with Movie
- 3:02Speaker 1: Nerds in February in Sydney and Melbourne. But I've done
- 3:06Speaker 1: and I've done like shows with my band. But like
- 3:08Speaker 1: a couple of years ago, my friend who's in a
- 3:10Speaker 1: Blink one eighty two tribute act, said hey, why don't
- 3:12Speaker 1: we combine that into one evening where we show the
- 3:15Speaker 1: movie and then the Blink tribute act plays and then
- 3:18Speaker 1: I do a band set. And it kind of fell
- 3:21Speaker 1: apart because of lockdown. We tried to move it to
- 3:24Speaker 1: like drive in movie theaters to keep social distancing. That
- 3:28Speaker 1: didn't work because Live Nation didn't want to like move
- 3:31Speaker 1: it from their venues. To drive in movie theaters. So
- 3:34Speaker 1: I kind of sat on it for a minute. But
- 3:36Speaker 1: then there was this whole insurgence of nostalgia and Blink
- 3:40Speaker 1: started playing you know stadiums and you know, Bowling for
- 3:44Speaker 1: Soup is now playing like their biggest shows, and I
- 3:46Speaker 1: was like, all right, let's just run with this and
- 3:49Speaker 1: put it together. So we did, and it's just like
- 3:51Speaker 1: a complete dose of nostalgia for the evening.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Hey, it is said the format of course to chalk
- 3:59Speaker 2: about like, it's a multi layered format like you got
- 4:01Speaker 2: the EMO Night features a movie screening video, there's a
- 4:05Speaker 2: Q and A, there's a meet and greet, there's a
- 4:08Speaker 2: DJ set, and then there's a live campaigning of it.
- 4:10Speaker 2: So it's not your typical show where you just breeze
- 4:12Speaker 2: in and sign a few autographs, say la, you take
- 4:14Speaker 2: photos and fuck off. Like people actually get to spend
- 4:17Speaker 2: time with you and get to know you in the
- 4:19Speaker 2: movie a lot more, don't I.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it's definitely I'm there for it's a four and
- 4:24Speaker 1: a half hour gig. If I do all all the things,
- 4:28Speaker 1: the VIP meet and greet, the movie screen, the Q
- 4:31Speaker 1: and A, the live band set, and the DJ set.
- 4:34Speaker 1: So if you're wondering where I'll be, You'll find me
- 4:37Speaker 1: because I'll be there for four and a half hours.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And one thing I did notice last time you were in, mate,
- 4:43Speaker 2: like you're very approachable sort of blake. You know, you
- 4:45Speaker 2: don't just sit in the green room and wait till
- 4:47Speaker 2: you got time and comes and go in there and
- 4:48Speaker 2: do it like you're out there talking with the people.
- 4:50Speaker 2: You're chatting with them. You you're smiling the whole fucking time.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Like it's a it's a proper interactive sort of experience
- 4:57Speaker 2: in't it.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Well, I mean, look, look, this is this is something
- 5:01Speaker 1: that I think, you know, for those of us that
- 5:04Speaker 1: you know, grew up with with all this music, the
- 5:06Speaker 1: music that's in the soundtrack of American Pie. And you know,
- 5:09Speaker 1: let's not get into like the emo police of like
- 5:13Speaker 1: what qualifies as emo music. There's a lot of brass
- 5:16Speaker 1: over stuff. And you know, the night isn't about, like,
- 5:20Speaker 1: you know, proving my musical knowledge. It's about playing the
- 5:24Speaker 1: songs that we all know and love and getting that
- 5:26Speaker 1: hit of nostalgia.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I like what now, mate, you would have seen
- 5:30Speaker 2: American Pipe all the probably ninety nine percent of people
- 5:34Speaker 2: on this planet, like I tell you still find the
- 5:36Speaker 2: bits of the movie or jokes in the movie that
- 5:38Speaker 2: that catch you off. God on them stand at.
- 5:40Speaker 1: You, you know. I mean, obviously I'm not paying like
- 5:45Speaker 1: super close attention all the time. Though. I remember in Brisbane,
- 5:48Speaker 1: uh last February, the sound cut out for some reason
- 5:54Speaker 1: for like a good like fifteen minutes and the movie
- 5:58Speaker 1: was still playing and I was like, oh shit, So
- 6:01Speaker 1: I like ran out to the front of the screen
- 6:03Speaker 1: and then I started like acting out all everyone's lines
- 6:07Speaker 1: like the best that I could remember. It became like
- 6:09Speaker 1: Mystery Science Theater three thousand for a good fifteen minutes.
- 6:13Speaker 1: People were dying. So, you know, this is the thing
- 6:16Speaker 1: that I always I always say, like, not every show
- 6:19Speaker 1: is perfect, but when shit like that happens, it becomes
- 6:23Speaker 1: this like memorable moment. Like I just played my first
- 6:26Speaker 1: show with my son on drums and he was, you know,
- 6:29Speaker 1: concerned about making mistakes. I'm like, dude, mistakes are where
- 6:32Speaker 1: the magic is. That's like the thing that you remember.
- 6:35Speaker 1: You don't remember a perfect live show. You remember when
- 6:38Speaker 1: like something went down and you'll never forget it, and
- 6:41Speaker 1: you'll tell the story one hundred and fifty times.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah, and ninety percent. So the people out of the
- 6:46Speaker 2: front don't know you've made a mistake, and so you
- 6:48Speaker 2: stop and go off lock and then I just bucked up.
- 6:51Speaker 2: How you keep going through it? Nobody knows?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's I was just played the show. My
- 6:56Speaker 1: son uh played with me when he's on the drums.
- 6:59Speaker 1: We opened up for the Dolly Rots and Go Betty
- 7:01Speaker 1: Go at the House of Blues and Anaheim last week,
- 7:05Speaker 1: and Kelly from the Dolly Rots was like talking to
- 7:07Speaker 1: my son after the show and she's like, yeah, if
- 7:10Speaker 1: you make a mistake, she always said, if you want
- 7:12Speaker 1: to hear the perfect version of the song, listen to
- 7:14Speaker 1: it on the record. If you make a mistake during
- 7:17Speaker 1: a live show, most people don't even know you made
- 7:20Speaker 1: a mistake, like you just said, so they don't care.
- 7:22Speaker 1: And then if the people who know the music well
- 7:25Speaker 1: enough know you made a mistake, they also don't care
- 7:27Speaker 1: because they love you anyway.
- 7:29Speaker 2: It's true, that's true. There's been a lot of talk
- 7:34Speaker 2: made about a new American Pie. Maybe can you confirm
- 7:37Speaker 2: or deny any of that?
- 7:39Speaker 1: So I am going to delve into everything that I
- 7:44Speaker 1: know about this, because there is there is another layer
- 7:48Speaker 1: to this that no one has talked about yet, and
- 7:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell all during a live podcast at my
- 7:55Speaker 1: Melbourne show at the Laundry Bar. So I did a
- 7:58Speaker 1: podcast with my buddy Key with Creative Creatures, who's producing
- 8:02Speaker 1: a podcast that I'm launching in August called also known
- 8:05Speaker 1: for Well. We've already interviewed a couple of people for it.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Jarrett Reddick's my first guest, and so that I'm launching
- 8:12Speaker 1: in August, but so Key is coming out. We're setting
- 8:15Speaker 1: up the cameras and the mics and that's going to
- 8:18Speaker 1: be the start of the show. The opening act is
- 8:19Speaker 1: a live podcast and the main thing we're going to
- 8:22Speaker 1: talk about is what the hell is going on with
- 8:26Speaker 1: American Pie five?
- 8:27Speaker 2: Maaron, could you give us a little snippet? MS? People, No,
- 8:30Speaker 2: You're not full of shit? And they chain into it.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Well, everyone has been asking me about this Facebook rumor
- 8:38Speaker 1: of American Funeral. But when I tell you during this
- 8:42Speaker 1: podcast the origin of why that rumor started, it's hilarious.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I believe it in that.
- 8:51Speaker 2: But just say you had to write the next American
- 8:54Speaker 2: Pie movie, what would the plotline be?
- 8:56Speaker 1: You know, I was always a big fan of John
- 9:00Speaker 1: and Hayden's concepts. So John and Hayden you know that
- 9:04Speaker 1: they they wrote and directed American Reunion, the fourth American
- 9:07Speaker 1: Pie movie, or as they called it in Germany, American Piefen.
- 9:13Speaker 1: I don't know why I like to say that, but
- 9:15Speaker 1: I do so, so I've just set myself off off
- 9:26Speaker 1: on my own tangent. So uh So, John and Hayden
- 9:29Speaker 1: they're also the create part of the three creators with
- 9:32Speaker 1: Joshua Hialed for Cobra Kai and now they they did
- 9:35Speaker 1: Harold and Kumar, which they've just announced they're doing a
- 9:38Speaker 1: Harold and Kumar, you know, sequel. So John and Hayden
- 9:43Speaker 1: had this concept after we did American Reunion that we
- 9:47Speaker 1: were going to come back. It was going to be
- 9:49Speaker 1: Jim's dad and Stiffler's mom getting married. Jim would of
- 9:55Speaker 1: course become the best man, and then Stiffler would be
- 9:58Speaker 1: the matron of honor.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Uh.
- 10:01Speaker 1: He would of course overtake Jim's plans, tell him he
- 10:04Speaker 1: doesn't know what he's doing as the best man. We
- 10:07Speaker 1: all go to Vegas and I'm pretty sure it becomes
- 10:10Speaker 1: American Pie meets the Hangover. So my only hope in
- 10:17Speaker 1: that storyline is that I don't spend the entire movie,
- 10:20Speaker 1: you know, trapped on a roof of Caesar's Palace as.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Doug drunken pasta. If you had to actually have spent
- 10:29Speaker 2: one night on the piece with anyone out of the movie,
- 10:31Speaker 2: who would.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Think, Well, you know, you've got you've got Like, I
- 10:40Speaker 1: don't know, I mean I did, I have done that
- 10:44Speaker 1: with all the guys at various points in time though.
- 10:47Speaker 1: You know, just like a lot of my friends in music,
- 10:50Speaker 1: a lot of people have like opted to stop drinking.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I think, you know, sometimes in life, if you if
- 10:57Speaker 1: you drink more on every particular night that all of
- 11:00Speaker 1: your friends combined, you you kind of use up your
- 11:02Speaker 1: drink cards early. So because you know, now you got
- 11:07Speaker 1: like Chris Klein, he's been sober for years. I've just
- 11:10Speaker 1: seen like you know, Jason's uh decided to do the
- 11:13Speaker 1: same thing. I don't think Eddie Kay is sort of
- 11:16Speaker 1: in the you know, the drinking boat. He's like focused
- 11:18Speaker 1: on raising his family. Sean would never really join us
- 11:22Speaker 1: for those things. So I mean I still go out
- 11:25Speaker 1: and party with Tara when we do, like our comic
- 11:27Speaker 1: cons and stuff. So I would say, you know, Tara
- 11:31Speaker 1: is still a lot of fun out at the UH.
- 11:33Speaker 1: She whenever we do comic cons and I play a
- 11:35Speaker 1: band show, she always comes to support the band.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Yeah, good, good on a speaking of bands and music,
- 11:42Speaker 2: might be better stop talking a bit of music, because
- 11:44Speaker 2: this is a music publication after all.
- 11:48Speaker 1: That's all right. American Pie is synonymous with pop punk music,
- 11:51Speaker 1: so it is if you talk American Pie, you are
- 11:54Speaker 1: technically talking music.
- 11:56Speaker 2: We'll run with that one. Might run with that one.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I've got to seeing you last time you're at him,
- 12:02Speaker 2: I'd like, you're not just another actor trying to be
- 12:06Speaker 2: a musician, you know, like you're actually play and seeing
- 12:08Speaker 2: well enough to be a musician, and that that is
- 12:10Speaker 2: a compliment.
- 12:13Speaker 1: You know, I appreciate the compliment. And I think probably
- 12:17Speaker 1: the coolest moment for me has been in the in
- 12:21Speaker 1: the recent year. I mean, I've done like some some
- 12:25Speaker 1: cool things. Obviously, I've done seven albums. My last album
- 12:28Speaker 1: had amazing features from Bowling for Soup less than Jake
- 12:32Speaker 1: the early November back in twenty fifteen, I did a
- 12:36Speaker 1: song that I did with Blues Traveler and performed it
- 12:39Speaker 1: with you know, John Popper and all that stuff. But
- 12:42Speaker 1: in recent times I've started to actually be like hired
- 12:46Speaker 1: as a like a featured guest vocalist on some like
- 12:50Speaker 1: you know, some smaller some smaller projects. But the fact
- 12:54Speaker 1: that anyone would even consider bringing me into their project
- 12:59Speaker 1: as a guest vocal uh is It's It's kind of
- 13:03Speaker 1: like if actions speak louder than words, it's the actions
- 13:06Speaker 1: that let me show that while you're saying this compliment,
- 13:09Speaker 1: I'm seeing it happen in real time. I'm actually doing
- 13:13Speaker 1: that in two days. So I'm flying out to New
- 13:16Speaker 1: York for a show, a couple of shows in New York.
- 13:20Speaker 1: But when I land, I'm going into the studio to
- 13:22Speaker 1: cut a guest vocal for some friends.
- 13:24Speaker 2: So yeah, so American Pie the Musical Next.
- 13:30Speaker 1: God, did anyone see the Green Day One? Was it
- 13:33Speaker 1: any good?
- 13:34Speaker 2: I didn't know there was one?
- 13:36Speaker 1: Yeah, they were on Broadway, Dude, I think it was
- 13:38Speaker 1: like American Idiot was like, yeah, we knew it happened,
- 13:44Speaker 1: but no one ever told us out was. So you
- 13:46Speaker 1: tell me how that won one is first, and then
- 13:48Speaker 1: I'll tell you whether or not we get America Pie
- 13:50Speaker 1: the Musical.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Bank gold In So, well, what actually came first to you? Acting?
- 13:55Speaker 2: All music?
- 13:57Speaker 1: You know? I started acting when I was six years old.
- 14:00Speaker 1: I didn't start playing guitar till I was about fourteen,
- 14:03Speaker 1: so I mean, definitely the acting came first and is
- 14:06Speaker 1: still my first love. But I'm never gonna choose one
- 14:09Speaker 1: or the other. I'm always gonna continue doing both.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Yeah, and then the music you play live like, you
- 14:14Speaker 2: play the sort of pop punk sort of stuff from
- 14:16Speaker 2: American Pighlight. Is that because that's your preferred John at
- 14:19Speaker 2: a player, or do you play that more because it
- 14:21Speaker 2: fits into the movie.
- 14:23Speaker 1: You know it started out? I mean my first when
- 14:25Speaker 1: I was fourteen. I started playing guitar during like the
- 14:28Speaker 1: grunge era. So my initial album that I released in
- 14:33Speaker 1: two thousand and eight is definitely more alternative rock, just
- 14:37Speaker 1: that slower, mid tempo kind of vibe, which I know
- 14:41Speaker 1: is having a bit of a resurgence. I've even seen
- 14:44Speaker 1: it in Australia, like the Emo nights have kind of
- 14:48Speaker 1: like oversaturated the marketplace and now we're starting to see
- 14:51Speaker 1: nineties nights, which I have a if anyone watching this
- 14:56Speaker 1: interview runs a nineties night in Australia, you can consider
- 15:00Speaker 1: having me. Because I was on the Creed Cruise with
- 15:03Speaker 1: my band and then they wanted me to do nineties
- 15:06Speaker 1: DJ nights. So I got an encore from Mark Tremonte
- 15:11Speaker 1: during my nineties DJ setteth, What did you play? Uh?
- 15:16Speaker 1: I decided for that one instead of trying to play
- 15:19Speaker 1: like all the dancy nineties stuff for the first night,
- 15:23Speaker 1: I decided to just play what I grew up listening
- 15:25Speaker 1: to in the car, like all my favorite songs from
- 15:28Speaker 1: my CD collection, and specifically songs that you would never
- 15:32Speaker 1: imagine hearing during a DJ set. And they absolutely ate
- 15:37Speaker 1: it up. Everyone was singing along. Like I said, my
- 15:40Speaker 1: set was three hours. I cut it off like right
- 15:43Speaker 1: at the time, and then the stage manager runs over
- 15:45Speaker 1: and he's like, uh, could you play four more songs?
- 15:48Speaker 1: I was like, uh sure? And then I found out
- 15:51Speaker 1: the next day it was because Tremonty and his family
- 15:53Speaker 1: were like in the balcony the whole time, going because
- 15:56Speaker 1: like the place was packed and he couldn't understand like
- 15:58Speaker 1: why the place was packed for me pressing play you know,
- 16:02Speaker 1: because and why would you you know, if you're the
- 16:04Speaker 1: lead guitarist a Creed, why would you even know what
- 16:06Speaker 1: a nineties night is?
- 16:08Speaker 2: I sure, that's sort of like you mentioned you play
- 16:12Speaker 2: it on the cruise ship with Creed, Like you play
- 16:14Speaker 2: all over the world with a lot of different bands, right,
- 16:15Speaker 2: So do people in the music industry treat you like
- 16:18Speaker 2: an actor, like treat you like a musician when you're
- 16:20Speaker 2: doing that?
- 16:23Speaker 1: You know, I don't know. I think I'm always just
- 16:27Speaker 1: the myself and a person. So I've never really, you know,
- 16:32Speaker 1: looked at it from the standpoint of any No one's
- 16:34Speaker 1: ever put my career in front of my personality. I
- 16:38Speaker 1: may get a good point, really well, I'll make it
- 16:41Speaker 1: a good point to connect with people, and I don't.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I don't just try to connect with people that I
- 16:45Speaker 1: think are gonna get me things. I connect with anyone
- 16:48Speaker 1: that will take two seconds out of their day to
- 16:51Speaker 1: like say hello and shake my hand. So whether that's
- 16:55Speaker 1: you know, during a meet and greet or you know,
- 16:57Speaker 1: during our interview. I mean, look, you ended up coming
- 16:59Speaker 1: out to mow was in doing the Q and A
- 17:02Speaker 1: with me. Yeah. That was technically my first show since
- 17:09Speaker 1: I was supposed to open up for Wheedest, but my
- 17:11Speaker 1: flight was delayed so I missed that one. So that
- 17:14Speaker 1: was technically my first show in Australia and you were there.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Oh it was Indeed, I even got to sign the
- 17:19Speaker 2: Book of Life.
- 17:21Speaker 1: You did, and and I found Squirty's secret in there
- 17:25Speaker 1: by that I know the secret now.
- 17:29Speaker 2: It took me twenty years to get that, and you've
- 17:32Speaker 2: freeze in one fucking day and he tells me, and
- 17:35Speaker 2: I'll be nagging him for twenty years.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Well, to be fair, though, I did remove the tell
- 17:42Speaker 1: me even though I've just met you. Why your nickname
- 17:45Speaker 1: is Squirty? For those of you that don't understand what
- 17:47Speaker 1: the hell we're talking about. Squirty played bass for me
- 17:50Speaker 1: at Moe's Desert Clubhouse in Gold Coast, my first show
- 17:54Speaker 1: in Australia, and he will be playing bass for me
- 17:56Speaker 1: again in Brisbane at the Lulu Room. And so yeah,
- 18:01Speaker 1: I said, well, just write your secret on a random
- 18:04Speaker 1: page inside the Bible, the sex Bible that I I'll
- 18:09Speaker 1: be bringing that back with me, by the way, that
- 18:10Speaker 1: will be in my checked baggage.
- 18:13Speaker 2: So it was funny because I ran back and I
- 18:16Speaker 2: read it that night, because I've been trying for years.
- 18:18Speaker 2: You never told me. And when I came back out
- 18:20Speaker 2: in the front, everyone's like christ I wasn't and I
- 18:22Speaker 2: had to lie and say, oh, he didn't really put
- 18:24Speaker 2: it in there. He was just joking. But now everyone,
- 18:27Speaker 2: of course knows that I'm a liar and you know
- 18:29Speaker 2: the truth.
- 18:33Speaker 1: So you never found it though I did, Oh.
- 18:36Speaker 2: You did, but everyone was naggave away.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Wait, so so let me ask you. Was that your
- 18:43Speaker 1: first time discovering it?
- 18:44Speaker 2: Yes, first time and not only go for twenty years
- 18:47Speaker 2: he'd never tell me. And like I said, you breathed.
- 18:49Speaker 1: You were saying that you waited twenty years for him
- 18:51Speaker 1: to tell you, but you didn't. I know. I'm just
- 18:53Speaker 1: putting it together that you waited twenty years and because
- 18:56Speaker 1: I got him to write it, now you.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Know, yeah, you breeze and one guy, one guy, and
- 19:01Speaker 2: he tells you the secrets. I got married him the
- 19:05Speaker 2: same day as that guy, and they still didn't tell me.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Well you know what, Chris, You're welcome.
- 19:15Speaker 2: I got nothing to say. Back to the Vasy again, bro,
- 19:20Speaker 2: Like you do know a lot of your originals as well, man,
- 19:23Speaker 2: so tell us about them, man.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Like I said, these these, uh, the tunes on this
- 19:31Speaker 1: latest album are some of im I know, like everyone
- 19:34Speaker 1: always likes their most recent stuff, but these ones, they
- 19:38Speaker 1: have a different life to them. And I know recently
- 19:40Speaker 1: I was playing that show with Jared Reddick from Bowling
- 19:43Speaker 1: for Soup. We were doing a side show for WrestleMania
- 19:47Speaker 1: in Vegas and I played a couple more of the
- 19:50Speaker 1: of the tracks from that and Jared came up to
- 19:52Speaker 1: me after the set he goes, dude, you got to
- 19:54Speaker 1: play more songs off that record, like it's so good,
- 19:58Speaker 1: and uh, I mean I have, like I said, amazing features.
- 20:01Speaker 1: The title track I wrote with Jarrett, but you know,
- 20:03Speaker 1: I did that song with Less than Jake in the
- 20:05Speaker 1: early November and Aaron Jones, and there was there's one
- 20:09Speaker 1: track in there that I didn't play for two tracks
- 20:13Speaker 1: actually that I didn't play live for like ten months,
- 20:17Speaker 1: and I don't know why. I just was like, oh,
- 20:20Speaker 1: they're not getting very many plays on Spotify that probably,
- 20:23Speaker 1: you know, maybe people don't like them. But then I
- 20:27Speaker 1: did the Creed Cruise and they wanted us to do
- 20:29Speaker 1: an entire album set for each of our sets, so
- 20:32Speaker 1: we did the new album and those songs slapped so
- 20:36Speaker 1: hard that I was like, I'm an idiot. These songs
- 20:39Speaker 1: are great and I should be playing them every night,
- 20:42Speaker 1: And how do you.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Go when you slip them into your set list to
- 20:44Speaker 2: in the American by even not like the people notice
- 20:47Speaker 2: that they originals or they just swept up in the whole,
- 20:49Speaker 2: like you say, nostalgia, and they don't know him.
- 20:52Speaker 1: You know, It's all often been a common thing when
- 20:55Speaker 1: when people come to a live show, they'll hear me,
- 20:58Speaker 1: hear me play some covers, and then they just kind
- 21:00Speaker 1: of get lost in the vibe that we bring to
- 21:03Speaker 1: the show, which you know, we're there to like connect
- 21:06Speaker 1: and you know, have that real like human moment. I mean,
- 21:10Speaker 1: that's the beauty of live shows, right. You know, you
- 21:12Speaker 1: can't get that, you know, listening to the record and
- 21:15Speaker 1: you're certainly not going to get that if you stay
- 21:17Speaker 1: at home or you know. And as much as I
- 21:19Speaker 1: love doing this interview with you over zoom, I much
- 21:22Speaker 1: prefer to have a beer with you in person. So
- 21:26Speaker 1: when I do that, like, I'll finish the set and
- 21:29Speaker 1: inevitably someone will say, man, you played like some originals
- 21:34Speaker 1: and you play the cover. You should play more originals.
- 21:36Speaker 1: I really liked your original song. I'm like, dude, seventy
- 21:38Speaker 1: percent of the set was original. Were you only paying
- 21:42Speaker 1: attention thirty percent of the time? But that's the thing
- 21:45Speaker 1: they don't really know, because when you write a catchy
- 21:47Speaker 1: tune and it feels good like then you're not really
- 21:51Speaker 1: judging it in the moment, you're just actually living.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I'm not sure if that was actually a culpliment or
- 21:56Speaker 2: an insult from that, like the fact that he was
- 22:00Speaker 2: only one.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Who knows I judge that's Chris.
- 22:06Speaker 2: I'll just take him so I'll wat tell you look
- 22:09Speaker 2: lovely today. Then we've finished offing. But like finished off
- 22:15Speaker 2: the centers prost Man, like, there's gonna be people out
- 22:17Speaker 2: there because it's giants are all we're assholes at the
- 22:20Speaker 2: end of the day, we're good assholes, we're assoles. And
- 22:22Speaker 2: the people we're gonna say, this guy was on the
- 22:24Speaker 2: out of last months, why should I go and see
- 22:26Speaker 2: him again now? But why should they come back and
- 22:28Speaker 2: see you again? Because you show it's not completely different
- 22:30Speaker 2: every time.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Well, they are different. And one of the main reasons
- 22:35Speaker 1: that they're different is because in every city that I
- 22:37Speaker 1: go to, I find uh local musicians to come and
- 22:41Speaker 1: back me up. So the set is never the same thing.
- 22:44Speaker 1: We don't use any tracks and and so that that's
- 22:48Speaker 1: one vibe that makes every show completely different.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Uh.
- 22:53Speaker 1: The other thing is that again you never know like
- 22:56Speaker 1: what what what things are gonna happen uh during the show,
- 23:02Speaker 1: and what things I'm gonna say because I'm definitely an
- 23:05Speaker 1: in the moment type of person. So as far as
- 23:08Speaker 1: like what why should you come back? Every show is different,
- 23:13Speaker 1: so you're gonna have a good time and it's going
- 23:15Speaker 1: to be a different time.
- 23:17Speaker 2: And what's the best place for people? Don't find out
- 23:19Speaker 2: where you're playing and get tickets and shit?
- 23:22Speaker 1: Uh tinband dot com forward slash tour has all the
- 23:26Speaker 1: tour dates listed there and every one of the pictures.
- 23:29Speaker 1: It's got like the you know the bands in town
- 23:32Speaker 1: like sort of thing, and you can pick your city
- 23:34Speaker 1: and then below that like all the flyers are you
- 23:37Speaker 1: know live links as well. So I do all my
- 23:40Speaker 1: web designing and run all my social media. I post
- 23:43Speaker 1: things on social media and if you still can't find it,
- 23:46Speaker 1: just send me a DM and I'll answer you
