Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Let's start today with a simple question.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: What are you training for?
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Not what workouts are you doing, or how many days a week are you exercising, or what is your Apple Watch telling you, but I mean like what is the purpose behind the way that you are moving your body right now?
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Because here's what I see with women in midlife.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: We are going through the motions, we're working out because we should, because it's what we've always done, or what we're what we've been told we should do, or because we're trying to undo sitting all day, or because we just don't want things to get worse.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: And while that is understandable, it's just not enough.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: In this season of life, after 40, we need to be done with just random movement.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: And it is actually the season for intentional training.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to the Midlife Glow It podcast, where we simplify fitness, nutrition, and healthy habits for women over 40.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: I'm Joan Dandano, your midlife health and wellness coach.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: And if you are ready to feel strong, consistent, and confident in this season of life, you are in the right place, my friend.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: When we were younger, we could get away with whatever.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: We could skip strength training altogether.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: We could put together just random workouts.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: We could chase sweat and want like that feeling of being sore all the time.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: We could start and stop workouts.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: It didn't really matter.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: But in midlife, it does.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: The math changes.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Now, every year without intention is actually costing you your muscle, your bone density, your balance, your power, and your confidence in your body.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: We need to stop drifting without a plan.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And we need to really ask ourselves: what am I training for?
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: We have this one body, our vessel, to carry us through this amazing life.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And it is our responsibility to care for it.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And the care that is required after 40 looks different than it did in our 20s and 30s.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: So let's clear this up: like the difference between working out and training.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: So working out is doing movement for the sake of movement, for checking the box.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: But training is movement with purpose.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: So an example would be working out is showing up at the gym, doing the 30 minutes on the elliptical because you think you should and because that's what you've always done.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: But training is lifting heavy dumbbells over your head because you know that you've got a trip coming up that you want to be able to lift your suitcase into the overhead bin and you don't want to have to ask for help or you don't want to tweak your back in the process.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Working out is taking a yoga class just because it, you know, it's supposed to be good for you, and that checks the box.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: But training is actually doing balance work and single leg exercises because you want to be able to hike that trail without a fear of falling.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: You want to be able to trust your body on uneven ground.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Working out asks, did I move today?
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And training asks, what do I want my body to be capable of?
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Like what kind of life do I want access to in a decade, in two decades?
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: So in midlife, training is no longer about shrinking our bodies, but it's actually about supporting our future self.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: So I remember the moment that this really like dawned on me.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I was in the gym and I was just doing my workout and somebody came up to me and asked me, What are you training for?
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: And in that moment, I kind of paused because that question always previously to this day, and then this was right around when I turned 40, I had always previously had a concrete answer.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: I was either training to get my body back after pregnancy, or I was training to get a PR in a running race, or I was training to get my physique even more sculpted for the next time I would step on stage.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: But at that point, in my early 40s, I remember answering that question and it surprised my answer surprised me.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: And I said, I'm training for life.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: And that answer surprised the guy who asked me too.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: He said, But you're so dedicated and serious about your training.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: And it seems as though you're like training with intention.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: And it occurred to me then that I am.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: I am training to be able to open jars.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: I'm training to be able to climb up onto my kitchen counter and water my plants.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: I don't want to have to ask for help when I'm carrying heavy bags.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: I want to feel stable as I'm walking up and down stairs.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: And I don't want to have to worry about falling.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: And in my early 40s, I don't think I was like actually fearful of these things, but I knew enough, like subconsciously, to know that someday these things would be hard and they wouldn't just be a given.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: So when I ask women, what are you training for?
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: I hear some common answers.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: And I want to just share those with you now with a mindset shift for you to maybe consider.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: So this is a big one that I hear a lot.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: So what are you training for?
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm training to lose weight.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Okay, here's the deal: weight loss can happen, but weight loss is not a training goal.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Weight loss does not tell your body how to adapt or what to build.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: So instead of training to lose weight, what if we shifted that?
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: And we asked a different question.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Am I building strength and muscle that will actually change my body composition and my metabolism?
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Because muscle is the key.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Like it is what, it's our magic power.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: It's what gives us shape and energy and metabolic resilience.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Okay, another answer when I ask this question of clients is I'm training to burn calories.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: So your body doesn't actually care about calorie burn as much as it cares about stimulus and recovery.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: So when we lift weights, we are actually stimulating our muscles to break down and then rebuild.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: So when we chase calorie burn, then we're thinking more about cardio and just working hard and lots of intensity.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: And often that leads to exhaustion.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: And often that doesn't help us build our muscle.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: So instead, what if we were to ask our body a different question?
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Am I giving my body a reason to get stronger?
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Because strength adaptations, not calorie burn, are actually what transform your body, especially in this season of life.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Often another answer that I hear is I'm just trying to stay active.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: And I want to celebrate that.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Activity is great, but activity is not enough to preserve muscle and strength and bone as we age.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: So walking is one of the best things that we can do in midlife.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: But walking alone will not protect your bone density or build the muscle that you are losing rapidly each year, especially after menopause.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: So instead, what if we asked a different question?
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Am I doing the kind of movement that actually protects what I'm at risk of losing?
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: So thinking about burning calories and losing weight and trying to stay active, those are not like wrong or bad.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: They're just not enough for this season of life.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about what really does matter.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Here are the training goals that are worth prioritizing and what it actually looks like.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, the first one is training for independence.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: So we want to think about can we move through our day without needing assistance?
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: And again, like this might seem far away from where we are today.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Like, what do you mean, independence?
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't need any help, right?
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: But we have a little glimpse into our future by looking at the generations ahead of us.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: And you can see that like they need a little help, right?
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: So that'll be us someday, inevitably.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: But if you want to be able to get down on the floor and play with your grandkids and then be able to pop right back up, maybe even without using your hands, that is training for independence.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Or if you decided on a whim, I really want to rearrange the furniture in my living room, like you training today for independence means being able to do that without having to wait for help.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Or realizing like carrying heavy groceries in from your car.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: And if you're like me, up three flights of stairs, like that's a big deal.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: So if we want to be able to do these things without having to rely on somebody to come help us, we need to be training for this today.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: And that might look like doing squats with dumbbells, doing lunges with dumbbells, doing hinges, doing carries, movements that actually mimic real life.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: That is functional training.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: So here's what I want you to try.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: I want you to try this week coming down on the floor, having a seat, or maybe even laying all the way down on the floor, and then practicing.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Can you get up from the floor without using your hands to push you up?
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: It is hard, but with practice, you will be able to get better and better at that.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: And that is an example of functional training, training for independence.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Okay, next let's talk about training for strength.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: So notice I did not say aesthetics.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: You know, sculpted muscles, beautiful, pretty, but they are not as important as the capacity that you have to be able to do the things in your life.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: So when we train for strength, we are protecting our joints, we're protecting our spine, we're building confidence.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: When we have strength, we know that when life asks something of us, like there's an emergency or we are have to move, or um you just you have a moment where you need to be physically capable.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Then in that moment, if you train for strength, your body will be like, oh yeah, I got this, instead of, oh gosh, I hope I can do this, right?
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: So what does this look like in training?
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: This looks like progressive overload, like over time lifting heavier, continuing to challenge your muscles in a way that forces them to adapt.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: So here's one thing that you could do this week.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: Pick an exercise like a goblet squat or a push-up and go ahead and try to see like how many could you do with good form today.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: And note down if you used weight, like how much weight did you use.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: And then next week, try to do one more rep or maybe add another couple pounds and just see right down how many could you get done.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: And that is actually functional training, but with the purpose of progressive overload.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: So it's getting a little bit harder each time.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Next is training for bone density.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: So this is one that is easily overlooked, but it's actually a non-negotiable in this stage of life.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: So right now in your 40s and 50s, you are either building bone or you're losing it.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: There is no neutral.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: And the window to build it doesn't stay open forever.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Walking will not build your bone enough.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Yoga will not build your bone enough.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: You need impact.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: You need load.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: You need to put stress on your bone so that they respond by getting stronger.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: So when we train, we're doing, you know, heavy dumbbells, we're doing squats.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're sitting down and standing up, but you're holding dumbbells next to you.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Maybe deadlifts with a bar or with heavy dumbbells or even a kettlebell, step ups, or even jumping.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: So if jumping is something that your joints still allow you to do, jumping is a great weight-bearing, load-bearing movement that is going to help you create bone.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: So one thing that you could do this week is add a weighted carry to your workout routine.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: So you could take dumbbells or kettlebells, hold overhead or down by your sides, and then just walk back and forth.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: So you're lifting your knees up to about hip level and then placing your foot down.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: So you're walking with intention, with weight.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: And then finally, the last thing would be training so that you can trust your body.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: When we second guess our body and what it can handle, we feel incapable or we feel fragile.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: And that actually is sending a message that we are incapable or we are fragile.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: We're saying, I can't, or gosh, I hope I can, instead of I can and I will.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: So when you train for balance and stability, like so that you can trust your body, then you know that when you stumble, it won't turn into a full fall that turns into a fracture.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: And in order to do this, we need to do things like single leg work, like split squats or single leg deadlifts or stationary lunges or step-ups, adding weight, but also working on that balance and that stability.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: So one thing you could do this week is stand on one leg while you brush your teeth, or stand on one leg while you're standing in line at the grocery store.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: And if your ankle is wobbly, that is okay.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Like embrace that, celebrate that.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: That is actually your brain and your body communicating.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: And that's actually training with purpose right there so that you can trust your body.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Here's something that I don't think we talk about enough.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: When we train for life, your why becomes about getting stronger so that you can be the next best version of yourself.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: So you're not just training your body, you're actually training your brain to be resilient.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Every time you show up, even when you don't feel like it, you're proving to yourself that you are capable.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: And every time you push through that last rep, even when it's hard, you're teaching your brain that you can do hard things.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: And every time you choose to prioritize your health, you are rewiring that belief that yes, you matter.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: And that is mental resilience, that's emotional strength, and that's confidence.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: And all of those carry over into every single area of your life.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: And here's the beautiful part.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: When your why shifts from aesthetics to longevity, when it becomes about playing on the floor with your grandkids and paddleboarding on vacation and playing pickleball, being able to travel without limitation, then fitness stops being about checking a box.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: It stops being about a number on the scale.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: And it starts being about who you are and how you live.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: It's no longer I need to work out so I don't gain weight.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: And it becomes I'm training so that I can live the life that I want now and for decades to come.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: That is what's known as health span.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: It's more than just longevity.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: I don't know about you, but I don't want to live to 100 if my last 10 years are in a bed.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: I want to live with vitality and energy and freedom.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: And that is what training for life actually means.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: So when training for life becomes your focus, then aesthetics often follow anyway.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: Like you're gonna look better, feel better, right?
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: But they're not the point anymore.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: The point is that you're building a body that supports the life that you want to live.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: So I want to share a client story that kind of is in alignment with what we're talking about today.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: So I had a client come to me a couple of years ago, and she had been working out, like quote unquote working out, right, for years and years.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: Before she started working with me, she was running, she was paddleboarding, she was swimming, she was definitely active.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: But she was not strength training, or at least not consistently.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: She was moving her body regularly, but was always tired and run down.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: And she came to me because she wanted to get fit and strong for her 60th birthday.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: That was her why.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Not to lose weight, not to look a certain way, but she wanted to feel strong and capable as she entered this next decade.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: So she started strength training consistently inside of my FitZone membership, my online live and virtual workouts.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: And within weeks, she started to notice first her energy shift.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Next, she noticed her sleeping was way better.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: And then she started to feel really capable, not just inside the workouts, but inside life.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: And then she became a grandma.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: And it was like this coolest moment because she realized that because she had been intentional with training her body, it was able to keep up with her life.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: And now she gets down on the floor to play with her grandbaby, no problem, and pops right back up without her hands and she lifts without hesitation.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: She doesn't feel fragile or worried about her body.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: And the best part to me, because you know, I freaking love mindset, she said to me, the biggest shift that I see isn't physical, but it's actually like who I feel I am.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: I'm way more confident.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: And this is the version of myself that I want to carry into the next decades.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: So that is what training for life can do.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: So here is the truth.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Most women would like to train with intention, but they're just not really even sure how to begin or what to prioritize.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Often we are still defaulting back to advice that we learned in our 20s and 30s.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: But random workouts are no longer good enough.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: We can't just rely on doing cardio anymore.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: We can't stay inconsistent.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: We can't keep moving without a plan, without a strong why.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: We have to be moving and training with intention.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: If you are today not training at all, maybe because you stopped because it just was too overwhelming, or you're recovering from an injury, or maybe a health issue, or maybe you have tried so many times to start a program and failed that you just decided, forget it.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: This is not for me.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: I want you to hear this.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: It is not too late.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: The best time to start was yesterday, but the second best time to start is today.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: And you don't need a perfect routine and you don't need hours and hours in the gym, but you do need to start somewhere.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: Even if it's just one workout a week, even if it's learning what strength training actually looks like for you.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: You need to train with intention.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: You need to make it matter, you need a why that's built for this stage of life, not one that was borrowed from your 20s.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: So here is my little challenge that I would like to leave you with today.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Can you finish this sentence?
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: I'm training so that in 10 years I can blank.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: I want you to really think about this.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: Are you training today so that in 10 years you can weigh less or you can look better?
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Those are not like bad things, but I want to encourage you to think bigger.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: What is something that in 10 years you want to be able to do or feel or be?
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: So maybe in 10 years you want to be able to pick up your grandkids without hesitation, or you want to be able to balance on that paddleboard way out in the ocean and just say, look at me.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: You want to be able to feel strong and capable and comfortable in your own skin.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: When you can complete that sentence, I'm training today so that in 10 years I can blank that becomes your North Star.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: That is what you're training for.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: And this is exactly why I built my program, The Midlife Glow Up.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: It's eight weeks together in a group coaching format.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: And it exists to help women just like you, who are ready to train with intention, but either they're not sure like how to begin, what to do, or how to make it fit into your real chaotic life.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: You don't need to figure it out all on your own.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: And I do recommend getting a plan, getting support, getting structure.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: And that's what we do inside of the Midlife Flow Up.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Inside of my group coaching program, I offer two tracks.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: You can choose to focus on nutrition or on fitness.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: And it really depends on where you are right now.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: So if you are ready to build strength and train with intention, and you're not currently on a good routine with fitness, with lifting weights, strength training at least two times a week, I 100% recommend jumping into the midlife glow-up and focusing on the fitness track.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: It's real sustainable strength training with progressive overload that takes you through an eight-week program, which is long enough to see results, which is long enough to create sustainable change in your life and establish a habit that you can continue.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: If you're already strength training consistently, then you might choose the nutrition track where we're going to simplify your nutrition to make sure that you're fueling your body so that you can create strength, build muscle, build bone, so that you have more energy and you can see results and feel results.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: There are no restrictive meal plans, it's not cutting out food groups, it's just smart strategic nutrition.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: And if you're already crushing it with strength training and nutrition, but you really want to dial it in and up level, then I recommend the hybrid track, which is where we focus both on fitness and nutrition.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: But here's what I want to tell you.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: If you're not strength training, I 100% urge you, encourage you, please start.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: When you focus on strength training, it's the easiest thing to check off your list.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying it's easy to do, because I know that it is challenging, but it's simple.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: And if you can get into that routine twice a week, I promise you that you will see and feel and make measurable progress.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: You'll see yourself, feel yourself getting stronger.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: You'll feel the difference in your body and in your confidence.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: And once you start building that momentum, then tackling nutrition next will feel doable instead of overwhelming.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: So inside Of my program, you will not be guessing what to do or wondering, is this right?
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Am I training with intention?
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: You have a coach in your corner every step of the way, and then a community to bounce ideas off of and lean on and learn from each other.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: We have to stop chasing random goals and start training for what actually matters: our strength, our confidence, our independence, our energy, our longevity, our health span, our life.
