- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Monday, it's the 16th
- 0:15of February and here we are at the beginning of a new week and
- 0:20a whole new book of the Bible for us to dive into.
- 0:24Today we are beginning to head back.
- 0:28I think it was four years ago we spent some time reading through
- 0:31the minor prophets, and this year we are going to dip our toe
- 0:35into the first section of that prophetic group of books, and
- 0:40we're doing that by reading Hosea.
- 0:43Now. Hosea is a fascinating book.
- 0:46Hosea is actually the only book that was written by a prophet to
- 0:50the northern Kingdom of Israel before the Assyrians arrived.
- 0:54This is the Northern Kingdom in its apartment, absolute heyday
- 0:58going gangbusters, and they have just turned their backs on God.
- 1:03And God has a really interesting way of calling them back through
- 1:07a very literal mirroring of Hosea and God and what that
- 1:12looks like. And just an interesting thing to
- 1:14note, back then, when Israel came into this land of Canaan
- 1:18and took over, all the inhabitants worshipped the Baal,
- 1:22right? This is the God of Thunder and
- 1:25rain, and this is the God that kept the rain coming, kept the
- 1:28animals fertile, kept the people fertile, and kept things going
- 1:32well. But there was another God in
- 1:34that pantheon of gods by the name of Mott.
- 1:37And Mott was the God of sterility and death.
- 1:40And so the locals had to worship Baal so that rain and fertility
- 1:45were the rewards that they got from bar and not being sterile
- 1:48and dead, as obviously that would have been difficult for
- 1:51them. So in this space you've got
- 1:54people using temple prostitutes to celebrate that fertility and
- 2:00a country that is just torn between these old practises of
- 2:04worshipping Baal and this new way that God says no, no, no,
- 2:07no, no. From now on I brought you into
- 2:09this space. You are my people, you are
- 2:11Yahwehists, you will worship the one true God.
- 2:15But they keep on worshipping Baal, and that is what this book
- 2:19is about. This is the book about Hosea
- 2:21calling God's people back to be faithful to worshipping God
- 2:26alone. So let us without any further
- 2:29ado, dive in and read together Hosea chapter 1.
- 2:43The Lord gave this message to Hosea son of Birai, during the
- 2:47years when Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were kings of Judah
- 2:53and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.
- 2:58When the Lord first began speaking to Israel through
- 3:00Hosea, he said to him, Go and marry a prostitute so that some
- 3:06of her children will be conceived in prostitution.
- 3:10This will illustrate how Israel has acted like a prostitute by
- 3:14turning against the Lord and worshipping other gods.
- 3:18So Hosea married Goma, the daughter of De Blame, and she
- 3:23became pregnant and gave Hosea a son.
- 3:26And the Lord said, name the child Jezreel, for I am about to
- 3:30punish King Jehu's dynasty to avenge the murders he committed
- 3:34at Jezreel. In fact, I will bring an end to
- 3:37Israel's independence. I will break its military power
- 3:41in the Jezreel Valley. Soon Goma became pregnant again
- 3:47and gave birth to a daughter. And the Lord said to Hosea, Name
- 3:51your daughter Lo Ruamar not loved, for I will no longer show
- 3:56love to the people of Israel or forgive them, but I will show
- 4:00love to the people of Judah. I will free them from their
- 4:03enemies, not with weapons and armies or horses and
- 4:06charioteers, but by my power as the Lord their God.
- 4:12After Goma had weaned Lo Ruhama, she again became pregnant and
- 4:17gave birth to a second son. And the Lord said, Name him Lo.
- 4:21Am I not my people? For Israel is not my people, and
- 4:26I am not their God. Yet the time will come when
- 4:31Israel's people will be like the sands of the seashore, too many
- 4:35to count. Then at the place where they are
- 4:38told You are not my people, it will be said, you are children
- 4:43of the living God. Then the people of Judah and
- 4:46Israel will unite together. They will choose one leader for
- 4:50themselves, and they will return from exile together.
- 4:54What a day that will be, the day of Jezreel, when God will again
- 4:59plant his people in his land. Our Lord, it's very easy for us
- 5:13to distance ourselves from the people of Israel and to feel
- 5:17like, ah, those stubborn Israelites.
- 5:20Why didn't they just maintain their absolute dedication to you
- 5:25above all else? But here we are Lord, living
- 5:28lives surrounded by temptation and other goals that we would
- 5:34pursue. Our Lord, forgive us our
- 5:39infidelity as we continue to love others more than you, as we
- 5:45continue to be seduced by the things of this world, by honour,
- 5:49by success, by wealth, by self righteousness and all these
- 5:54things which seem so delicious and attempting for us to pursue.
- 6:00So Lord, humble us and bring us back to you.
- 6:04May our hearts just yearn for you more than anything else and
- 6:09may we return on bended knee to you as our Lord and our King.
- 6:14So we come back to you. Lord Jesus, we worship you and
- 6:18you alone. We love you and pray all of this
- 6:21in your saving name, Amen.
