[upbeat music] [clears throat] Is that, did you step on a duck? [laughs] Yeah.
• 0:17
Hey, everybody. Last minute, yeah. Welcome to Full Spectrum, Spectrum. [laughs] I'm having trouble s- tripping over my words today. [laughs] Full Spectrum Cycling, show number 174.
• 0:27
[upbeat music] Can't think of anything- I know... harder. Well, 175 is next week, so. Yeah, that's the s- whatever, sesquicentennial- Something-... ish... of that nature.
• 0:39
So in the studio today, we got, uh, Tony Burger to my left. JK- Hi... in his normal spot across from me over there. Keep bonking into the- Eyeballing... guy.
• 0:50
And splitting the uprights today is Cory, Cory Baumann from the River West 24. Welcome, Cory. Hi, thanks for having me. What a good-looking crowd. [laughs] Yeah. Bunch of handsome old guys.
• 1:01
We're in- He said Cory, not Jeremy. [laughs] Yeah. We, uh, we need to- Thank God... we need to mention we're in the White Room with Black Curtains podcast studio- Oh... here at, uh, Everyday Cycles in River West.
• 1:14
Speaking of Jeremy, la- uh, was it after the last show? Yeah, that we ran into him at, at- At Amorphic?... Amorphic. So we came over here with a bunch of people from Amorphic and did a quick tour of the as yet- And-...
• 1:24
not quite finished... a bunch of people and an incredibly cute French bulldog. Oh, whose dog? Oh, is it- I have pictures... it's a dog. Tony likes dogs.
• 1:33
And, and, and there was a guy from my fricking high school in that crew- Oh, wow... that I hadn't seen in- Pius High guy? Um, no, buddies with people from, like, the Whitnall-Greendale area. Ah. Or maybe he was at Pius.
• 1:46
I don't know. It was one, it was just kind of a creepy happenstance. [laughs] He's like, "No, I don't do the Facebook. I'm pretty much, I'm pretty much not on the grid whatsoever."
• 1:56
[laughs] And I'm like, "Well, that's cool." Well, yeah. Yeah. I, I, I feel like- "Just let me just mark it down that I ran into you," and if I run into the others, I'll be like, "Yeah." Okay.
• 2:03
The less- "You remember that guy? I barely do"... grid being on, the better, if it's just waste a bunch of time. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I need to find events and see what the haps are. And post your- You know?...
• 2:12
pictures in the morning. Well, exactly. That's nice. I know. Nice pictures. Hey, it's a soothing beginning mantra of the day. You look at the lake, and you give your thanks to the lake, man.
• 2:23
Before we dive- Heading to hell... deep in with Cory here- [laughs]... we got a, just a couple of things to tidy up from last week. WMSC music and art auction- [sighs]... situation.
• 2:34
So your wife listens to this show, and I really hope mine doesn't because my wife and wine and art are always expensive. [laughs] Yeah. Always expensive, and I forgot about that Friday. So- Oh, yeah... yeah.
• 2:50
I, uh- Well, you had boots on the ground there, man, and- Yeah, and we ran into, oddly enough, let's bring him in again, Dinardo Colucci. Uh-huh. Um, yeah, so it was, uh, it was nice.
• 3:01
It was a beautiful night to ride bikes, so we were able to ride our bikes down there and, and, uh, they had some pretty neat art. Some of it was, um, it, it was starting to get really expensive.
• 3:13
[laughs] We bid on a few pieces that I'm really glad got outbid on the last minute 'cause it would've been an expensive, expensive Friday night. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 3:20
Um, I think the piece that you were bidding on, if I'm, if it was to add to your collection, was really expensive. I bowed out at 304. Yeah. [laughs] It was a Mark Winters piece. I think it went for, like, 450.
• 3:33
Yeah, it, it was pricey when I got there. I will sponsor the extra $4- Yeah... just to be a participant. And it was, like, being tracked. I'm heckling. I'm heckling from the sidelines. [laughs] Like, come on, pay it.
• 3:40
Just do it. The only other thing I'll say about it is, um, and I might catch some flack for this, but eh, it's a podcast. No one listens anyway. The, uh, Chicken Shack rye- Mm-hmm... from Central Brewing.
• 3:55
What are they called? Central, Central Brewing? Oh, it's from Great Lakes. Central Waters? Is, is actually drinkable. It's a Great- And I rarely say that about their alcohol. [laughs] Yeah, that is, it's Great Lakes.
• 4:05
Yeah. It was actually pretty decent, but it's completely sold out, and you have to wait until you get next year. Mm-hmm. It's like, okay, well, uh, cool. I love Johnny Ziegler.
• 4:13
I love, obviously I love WMSC, and I have to apologize right now 'cause I had no idea your, 'cause I'm not on the books of face, that your, uh, your benefit was for raising money for WMSC. Right.
• 4:25
I obviously would've donated. And we raised 130 bucks- Sweet... for the WMSC radio programming studios and operational expenses, and I did win a piece, but it was nowhere near that expensive.
• 4:38
It was one of the few other pieces I saw that had any metal on it, which I've kinda been trying to do every year now- Oh, there was-... is get something with metal... there was one.
• 4:45
I was really trying to stay away from looking. I, I like did, like, one quick look. I'm like, "Mm, nothing's really grabbing me yet." Then the more I looked at it- Yeah...
• 4:55
and it was like, "Well, that's just sitting there at 50. I can- Let's try to buy that... I can part with the 50." Well, it's- Let's wait till the zero minute. I know, and I, their- You got it?...
• 5:03
their, their site must've been goofed up a little because I originally bid, the opening bid was 50, and then it said that I'd lost the bid, and I'm like, "I don't think I did."
• 5:12
So then I bid again against myself- Oh, and it went to 500... [laughs] raised, raised it another 10 bucks. There you go. It's for a good cause. But it's cool. It's, it's actually a neat piece. I got it in the other room.
• 5:21
We can take a picture of it and eyeball it and all that. I, I'm pretty happy with it. Cool. Right on. We need to get this man time to talk. So yeah, let, let's, let's, uh, let's get going with Cory.
• 5:31
So Cory, just, uh, maybe start with what's happening, uh, with your role with the River West 24 and... So, uh, I took control of bonus manager in, I think Nicole was still part of it in 2019. Um,
• 5:48
and but I was quickly climbing, uh, the ranks, if you will, and, um, then we had the bonus edition last year, and I took that on, pulled in 100 bonuses. Um- That was a lot last year. That was great.
• 6:02
Yeah, it was, it was wild. It was a lot of fun. Mm-hmm. I got to really know how to use Excel. [laughs] Um, and then, you know, this year, though, we can have laps again.
• 6:10
That's very- Very cool that we're bringing that back. There was a little bit of debate on it, uh, but we ultimately decided that we've always done this as- Yeah... as a race. We need to continue doing it as a race.
• 6:22
Um, what is cool is that a lot of people from last year, you know, they just told organizers that they just loved going to the bonuses and they'd prefer not to ride the laps. So we found a happy medium, and
• 6:35
unofficial riders can go to whatever bonus they want. That's genius. And, um, and they can participate however they want. If they wanna buy a T-shirt, they can.
• 6:43
Otherwise, we've got the regular registration where everybody gets the T-shirt and the stickers and, you know, and then they can be part of it and ride laps and get the manifest.
• 6:51
And, um, yeah, and so we're like 10 days away. Yeah. Yeah. Showtime. Yeah. Seven days when the show goes up. Yeah, right. Yeah, right. [laughs] 'Cause it's Friday on the eighth. 'Cause it's Friday now.
• 7:01
We have to, we have to- Correct... talk into the future. Yes. [laughs] So, uh, was, was the, uh, reason that maybe not doing laps was considered mostly because of the construction situation this year?
• 7:12
Or was it- That and, um, I don't know. We, we have some, we have some contention if, if it can- should be a ride or, you know, if it's unsafe to be a race.
• 7:27
But I don't know, if we're gonna count laps, let people ride as fast as they want. That's my opinion. Yeah, well, no, nobody's- You know, you are signing a waiver... nobody- You are signing the waiver...
• 7:34
nobody's forcing them to go fast, either Right, right. No one's forcing them to be dumbasses. Yeah. We don't want anyone to be a jerk, but it- Right... does happen. Right.
• 7:40
Yeah, I could s- I mean, you know, doing solo and trying to just best yourself is really cool, and that doesn't- No, absolutely... necessarily require going at breakneck speed, so. Right, right.
• 7:50
Yeah, so, um, I mean, Humboldt being torn up definitely, uh, is throwing a little bit of a wrench into things. Um, Tony's been taking the reign as practice lap manager along with Matt Baron. That's more Matt.
• 8:04
And, um, but I mean, you, you were practice lap manager. You have t- have like started it in, uh- Years ago... I started it in like 2010 or '11, and then you took it over when I moved to Tosa, so. That was fun. Yeah.
• 8:18
Is fun. Yeah, practice laps are definitely a good way, I mean, just even to learn the neighborhood, let alone what route you're gonna take. It's like, when I, when I do it, I would normally not run the same...
• 8:29
I might run five different versions of a lap just to kinda check out different stuff and see what other- Yeah... people are doing and- Yeah. I'm not in it to win it. I wanna see what's going on. Yeah. Right.
• 8:37
Yeah, and there's certainly some ways to go around it a little quicker than not, but I think it maybe varies by 10 minutes maybe. Right. Five minutes. I don't- It's not very much... and I don't care. Right.
• 8:46
I'm not in it like we were when we were trying to win it. Oh, wait, when we did win it. Yeah, now that that's been done. Yeah. Yeah. [laughs] I was on a BMX team that took third place.
• 8:58
20- Were they called 20 Inches of Terror? The 20 Inches of Terror. Yeah, I remember that team. Yeah. I remember when you guys were sponsored by that terrible beer company, Furthermore or something? Furthermore? Yeah.
• 9:08
Ooh, that beer sucked. Sorry. They gave us a keg of Fatty Boom Batty, which I don't even know if they're still a brewery. Which was okay. That was their best beer. Yeah, they had some pepper beer or something. Yeah.
• 9:17
That was gnarly. Yeah. Especially if you were given one and didn't know what you were about to face. Yeah. [laughs] 'Cause it did not hit me well. Right. Wasn't that your team name one year? Hmm? Fatty Boom Batty?
• 9:28
Wasn't that- Fatty Boombastic. Tripping the Fatty Boombastic. Okay. Something along those lines. Yeah, yeah. But, uh, yeah, I, I, I don't know. Is that, was that a Milwaukee brewery?
• 9:37
They were- I think they were out of Madison... yeah, like middle, middle Wisconsin somewhere. Okay, okay. Yeah, I just, there w- I don't...
• 9:44
On the back of the toilet, I don't know how old it is, probably May or something issue- Yeah... of Milwaukee Magazine or something had like 26 breweries just in the p- like greater metro area here. Uh.
• 9:55
[laughs] Like I, that's a lot. It is a lot. I don't know how many are gonna keep going or... It can't cost, it can't cost nothing to start one up.
• 10:03
I, you know, I don't know if Amorphic couldn't have been cheap to start up. That's pretty fancy schmancy. Well, they make great beer, so people should- Yeah, they do... go there and drink their beer. Yeah, they should.
• 10:12
They should. But back to the Root Sports 24, so 48 bonus checkpoints this year? 48 bonuses, um- Not counting the tattoo or including? Not counting the tattoo. Okay. So. That's- That would make sense...
• 10:23
that's one, one every half hour, folks. Yep. I'm guessing there's some overlap. [laughs] Um, uh, there's gonna be- Well, yeah, usually I'm just kidding...
• 10:31
so w- without giving too much detail about it, this I can say, is that there's gonna be two released every hour. The, the tail end of it, though, is gonna get, that's where we, I kinda just,
• 10:43
I stepped it up because the way that, um, everything's planned out, you have 46 bonuses every hour, but then there's time for a couple overlaps.
• 10:52
So near, near the end, I, I intentionally kinda stacked it for those teams that are really, like neck and neck at the end. Cool. Yeah. Maybe you get a little competition in there. Fuck yes.
• 11:03
Not just where you are on the road. You are serious. Yeah. So are, are you allowing people to go out there and, and ride ahead of the, the actual rider on the road and say, "Checkpoint, checkpoint 32 is empty right now.
• 11:14
Stop in. Stop in"? No. Um- That won't stop people from communicating that. Yeah.
• 11:19
[laughs] No, you get, you get your, I mean, you just get your bonus list and, um, and you determine when, [laughs] when, when it's best for you. Right.
• 11:28
Yeah, and sometimes it is better to get there right away, but usually in my experience, that's when the biggest line is. Yep. But also you don't wanna get there at five minutes till. Then you're get- turned away. Yeah.
• 11:39
And it shuts down on you. Because, I mean, that, at, at the end there, that's really up to the, to the bonus advisors themselves. Personally, when I run bonuses, if you're in line at the, at the end- You'll mark it...
• 11:50
you're, you're in. But if you show up at two minutes after- You're out... that line's done. It's like if you're voting, and you get- Right... into line and the- Exactly... you, right. Yep. Sure. They, they call the line.
• 12:00
Right. And you have to stand there with a big hulking guy to keep people from trying to jump in line or- That's cool. That's cool... don't be a jerk and all that good stuff. Yep.
• 12:09
Any new mottos this year, or is don't be a jerk still number one? Don't be a jerk is, is right up there at the top. Always number one. Yeah. It's always number one, yeah
• 12:17
Yeah, I, I don't think there was anything, anything new that I can think of. I mean, by the end of all of our meetings, everybody just talks like Jeremy anyway. It doesn't really matter. [laughs] I, I do have a question.
• 12:28
He's a powerful force. Well, and he, he was actually, uh, he was running the Mama Tried- Mm... in, like, in Indonesia, so he was gone for, for a while.
• 12:38
And in other, uh, countries over there and, um, I'm not even sure where else he was at. But so he missed a handful of meetings and was just slammed with, with doing the Mama Tried stuff.
• 12:50
But we all, I mean, we all know Jeremy so well, and, and it's... I mean, it's just, I love talking the same like [laughs] you know, I just, I've, like, iguanad his, uh, his, I don't know, his words. His slang.
• 13:05
His vocabulary, yeah. Well, he was kind of the instigator for bringing people over to the shop last week, too. He was. I mean, we'd be walking around, he goes, "What's this? What can you tell us about this thing?" Yeah.
• 13:13
And it's like, "It's unfinished, but it'll be cool when it's done." [laughs] Yeah. Like, no, and a, a couple of the, the fellas were pretty interested in what we're doing, so it was cool. It's cool. Yeah.
• 13:25
I had a River West 24 question I completely forgot. So while we were talking- [laughs]... BS did call in. Oh. But I didn't get to it in time. Maybe he'll call back. Sorry, Big Sexy.
• 13:34
But yeah, Big Sexy is now in, I think, Minneapolis still. Yeah. Or if he's not, he's coming across Wisconsin. Talking about coming back for the River West 24. His, his goal is to be here for the 24, just to hang out and
• 13:45
commiserate and drink his Jagermeister. Cool. [laughs] Well, he's allowed to do as many bonuses as he can get in. Yeah, he did- That's right... some bonus, uh, sidewalk sleeping.
• 13:55
He did some bonus, uh- [laughs] Pabst drinking. Pabst drinking was a, that was a big, uh, marathon Pabst... No, a Hamm's actually, but- He did have some Hamm's, too. Yeah. Yeah.
• 14:05
There- He was, we were- There was a frantic nature upon coming, riding from the ferry to River West, and by 9:00, gotta refill the Jagermeister coffers. Yeah. And it was getting a little tense. [laughs] Yeah.
• 14:19
Are we gonna make it? Standing around. Are we gonna make it? It's like, and we stopped at a Moto Scoot until there was like, uh, what? Gilbert's right over. Sure. It's like, "Jesus, somebody just take them over.
• 14:28
Let's do this. [laughs] Here we go." [laughs] We got plenty of time. And it'll work out. It'll work out. That, that said- I shit you not...
• 14:33
we have, we have plenty of time at our normal pace, whereas his is about a third- [laughs]... the speed of our normal pace. So maybe the- Yeah. Yeah... there was a little bit of extra time. The, uh, I'm going back to RW.
• 14:45
The long-term forecast looks pretty comfortable so far for that fourth of June. I, I checked it today. I, uh, put it out. There's, uh, like a 20% chance of rain each day. Love that.
• 14:55
But, um, I think Friday, the high is in like, it's like 79. Yeah. Perfect. And, and on, uh, Saturday, it's like 81, 82. Yeah, perfect. Perfect. Yeah, as long as the humidity's not too bad, like it's gonna be-
• 15:09
Do you remember the-... it's gonna be great... the year where it was ungodly cold? It started out super cold. Is that also the same year where it just, like, started pouring rain right before? Yeah. Yeah.
• 15:20
We had the dunk tank in front of our house. Okay. And it was ungodly cold, so when you got dunked, it was not any fun. It, it wasn't fun. [laughs] Yeah.
• 15:29
And then check, the next bonus checkpoint was to get the, the frozen T-shirt that you had to run around- Oh, I do remember that... to defrost. I didn't have to participate in that. Yeah. Oof.
• 15:38
But, um- That was an ugly-... one of the guys in, on our team was not thrilled about it. Yeah, it, it was an ugly, ugly RW, man. It was cold, cold, cold. Yeah. But still fun. This should be- Yeah... hopefully a good one.
• 15:52
Um, I think we're... Did we get to the top of- We, we should... did we get to the top of Holton? Yeah. [laughs] Top of Holton Street? I don't know.
• 15:58
Is that the highest point on the course or somewhere up there around- Probably... just past North Avenue? Yeah, Holton and Clark. Yeah, Holton, Holton and Clark- Yeah, somewhere in there...
• 16:06
between, between Meineke and, and Center. JK, can you, uh, can you get us the, the show beer today? I, J- Oh, you need one? Well, yeah. I don't have the- Oh... official show beer yet.
• 16:17
I still have a banquet sitting over here. I, I could go for one, too, please. I, I could, too, if there's one more in there. [laughs] Yep, I think so. Oh, wow. From the glass-lined tanks. So JK was gifted Rolling Rock.
• 16:31
[laughs] Extra pale. I know most people probably know what it is by now. They have to. I enjoy them. I, they're tasty. Yeah. And they're 4 for 3. I just haven't had them for, for... What? I don't know.
• 16:43
[laughs] Sarah was getting rid of them from the cellar. Yeah, I don't, I don't think there's a lot in there. She's like, "Does anybody want these?" [laughs] And I'm like, "What is it?" There's like 10 Rolling Rocks.
• 16:52
I'm like, "Yeah, I've got a backpack." Well, when- Yeah, I'll, and I'm going home. This, this will work out. What's your favorite kind of beer? Cold and free. Yeah. Man, I love that. The one, the one in my hand.
• 17:03
All right. I tend not to get this normally because it, there's always an option that I know I like instead. You know, like, if it's a Hamm's or an Old Style, I'll go there first. But yeah, they don't suck.
• 17:16
I mean, I used to drink these in college, so.
• 17:18
Never a bad- What I, what I have noticed is that a lot of 16 ounce are going to 4-packs, whereas Rolling Rock is still sitting strong at a sixer, which is perfect if you're, like, tailgating or- Yeah...
• 17:31
you know, doing, doing an outdoor thing with your friends and you don't wanna be carrying around, you know, a, a ton of beers or a cooler or whatever. And, you know, you're just- Yeah... kind of drinking fast.
• 17:39
Why buy four when they're just forcing you to buy eight? Yeah, right. [laughs] I mean, that's totally what it is. Right. It's all marketing. Yeah.
• 17:46
It's like, "Well, you know they're gonna have six, so we'll put four out there and they'll get two of them." Yeah. And we sell two more. 'Cause with, with the 4-pack, it's only like a 5-pack of 12 ounces. Right. So, oh.
• 17:57
Well, then you buy, um- Okay, math guys... well, then, then you do- I was kinda bored yesterday.
• 18:01
[laughs] I did this fresh math on my- Well, you get, you get an 8-pack of, uh, of 16 ounce beers, and you're like, "Well, that's the same price as a 12-pack of this."
• 18:11
So then all of a sudden now you're, for another dollar you can get an extra three beers out of it. And then, y- yeah, and by that point, you might as let's buy a 30 rack and move on with your life. [laughs] Right. Yeah.
• 18:21
Especially if it's Hamm's. Well, it's like- Oh... you know, in some places the, especially Nomad, calling out Nomad- [laughs]... it's a better deal to get the 12 ouncer for two reasons.
• 18:30
One, it's cheaper by the ounce It's colder... because it's 2.50 and four bucks or whatever, and you drink it faster so it stays colder better- Mm-hmm... if you're sitting outside.
• 18:39
That said, Rolling Rock, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Tony had an interesting... So someone said something about it. Well, you know, yeah, you called it out and I was like, "I feel like I've had this."
• 18:47
What, why else do we know Latrobe? I'm like, "Oh, this feels familiar." Yep. And then, and, and I went- And I think it's been on this show. Yeah. I went into my own head and I couldn't think of it, so I went to the-
• 18:57
The Googles. Yes. And I saw two things that I thought you were wondering, or that you were referencing. One, and then when we got here, you're like- It's Arnold Palmer... "Yeah, Arnold Palmer."
• 19:10
And I'm like, "No, I guessed wrong," 'cause it's also Fred Rogers. It's Fred Rogers' hometown too. And I was like, "Hot damn, dude." That's incredible.
• 19:16
I got Fred Rogers socks, so I'm gonna wear my Fred Rogers socks and bring Rolling Rocks. There you go. You're covering all the bases. I wonder if Fr- old Fred drank the Rolling Rock, you think?
• 19:25
[laughs] With, with Meow Meow Kitty Meow Meow or, or- I, I don't know. He didn't really seem- The King, what was the K- Yeah. Anyway. King Friday. King Friday.
• 19:32
He didn't, he didn't seem like a guy that- King Friday up the ri- King River was 24 Friday... was hanging. Hanging and drinking. I bet Fred Rogers put 'em back a little bit, not- I, yeah...
• 19:41
you know, he would- I would hope so. He probably had, like, one- He wasn't closing the bar on a Thursday night, but- No, no, no, like some fortified- [laughs]... wine after dinner or something. [laughs] Yeah. Right.
• 19:51
Like a Tawny Port. Little late night brandy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Corey, did you- Good Tawny... m- meet with the rest of the, you know, rest of the Illuminati?
• 20:01
[laughs] You know he's part of the Pentaveras or something of that nature. Right on.
• 20:06
Did you- See, that's when conspiracy theories are fun and not harmful [laughs] when you talk about Fred Rogers controlling the fucking world. Then- Right on... I want my con- I want my conspiracy theories back.
• 20:16
[laughs] Earl Wise with the hijacking, fucking- Birds aren't real... weaponized for God's sakes. I, I was just wondering if Corey went to Summerfest at all. I'm just kidding. Did you make it down there? I did.
• 20:25
I went one night. Um, we had tickets from last year when they gave out free ones, and, uh, we didn't really go down there to see anybody in particular. We did see Flock of Seagulls. Nice. Nice.
• 20:38
And, uh, we watched Black Crows. I have a good friend of mine, uh, who works on the rooftop at Miller Light, and so he got us a,
• 20:49
if you wanna call it an all access pass, which consists of, uh, you get up there and there if, if you get up there during their, their peak hours, there's food available from Sass's. Nice.
• 20:59
And you get five beers, and if, uh, he forgets to scan yours, you might get a couple extra. No way. Nice. And so, um, so yeah, I had a, I had a pretty good time for very little money. I think- So-...
• 21:11
I mean, the, the- That's, uh, yeah... yeah, the prices- That's a challenge... on the grounds were expensive. Right. But they were, a lot more tickets were being given away this year. Yeah.
• 21:18
And I ha- I still had, like, eight at the end of the run that I didn't use or wasn't able to give to anybody- [laughs]...
• 21:24
'cause everybody had 'em, and it would, when the attendance figures came in, I was like, "That's it?" That's pretty tiny, right? Like 445,000 is, like, half of what it was pre-pandemic. Oh, yeah.
• 21:33
And- I think it's that weekend thing, too. Yeah. I'm not a fan. Yeah, nobody is, I don't think. No. Needs to be 10 days in a row. Yeah.
• 21:38
And we're gonna put this out there right now, bring back, bring back the, the old 10 days. Yeah. Well, I think they're planning on it. Yep. Get, get, get, do the Monday off. People will- It's fine... take vacation.
• 21:47
T- people, yeah. And, uh, I mean, ride your bike down there because parking is insane. Oh, yeah. And they've got a free spot where they have, like, somebody watching bikes.
• 21:59
You know, I, I actually- And, uh, you can get in there and get out super quick, especially at night...
• 22:02
my, uh, my daughter works at Summerfest, and she's gonna be doing the show this weekend with, I can't believe Garbage is opening for Alanis Morissette, that's a whole nother talk.
• 22:11
Um, I got her a really nice handmade bicycle to ride to Summerfest. Yeah? I'm riding it tonight because she's never ridden it. She doesn't deserve that bike. [laughs] She does not deserve that bike anymore.
• 22:23
[laughs] Sorry, Cleone. Have you considered grounding her? [laughs] It's my fucking sister. [laughs] No.
• 22:27
Instead, she did really want her ACT, so I went and got her belly button pierced, which was fucking hilarious 'cause it hurt. [laughs] Ah, yeah, man. You got yours too?
• 22:38
Maybe it's time to make the- No, I did not get mine. Oh. Make the 24 a week-long run. [laughs] No. [laughs] There was, there was always jokes that every year to extend it by one hour,
• 22:52
and I can't even ima- 'cause now it'd be at, like, 39 hours. I did wait almost 50 hours to register one year. I, uh, jumped in that line with you pretty shortly after you got in it.
• 23:05
Yeah, you, you came in- We came in on a Wednesday.
• 23:07
You came in at, like, Wednesday at, like, 7:00, and then I saw your pic and I told my wife, Jess, I said, "Well, if Tony's in line, I should probably just go bullshit with him for the next couple days."
• 23:17
And I just, I had to get up and go to school the next day. I just left my tent where it was and- [laughs] It was awesome. It was. It was a lot of fun. Yeah. It was awesome. Like- It got out of control...
• 23:26
I'm like, okay, I'm gonna, I'm gonna- Like, okay, Tony, how is the, how is your Pep situation? Oh. Good. It, it... Well, no, it would be like, "Um, ooh, I could use some more. Why not?" Yeah. I'm like, "Okay.
• 23:36
Well, I'm, I'm in the area. Yep, here's another 30 pack." [laughs] That was, uh, I think that was the year that the 20 Inches of Terror got on the podium. Yeah. I believe it was. I, um,
• 23:49
yeah, because we were like- It was 2014... we need to get- Was the year after. I, I don't know. Yeah. I don't know. I, I turned my phone off- I don't know when it was, yeah...
• 23:55
because for the one time a week it rings, it happened, like, right as we started our podcast, so I was like, "I'm not dealing with this again." Yeah. But, um, yeah, 2014 sounds about right.
• 24:05
Yeah, 'cause we did 2012 and 2013, where we did third and first. I don't remember. Seems like it was a lot- Speaking of Jake Uborn...
• 24:11
sooner than, not that long agoer than that, but- I'm pretty sure- [laughs] It's been a while... 'cause it's coming up on 10 years since I broke my foot. Golly, time flies. Yeah.
• 24:20
That pandemic thing made those two years go by pretty quick- It, it was weird. Yeah... for some reason, at least for me. You guys were on the fat bike that year. Yeah. And you had the advantage. Did... I know Colin did.
• 24:30
I don't know how the rest of your team did it, but- Checkpoint three I think is the equalizer. Like, what route you take from there. Right. 'Cause you can do the switchbacks, you can run the stairs.
• 24:39
Uh, Co- Collin's even- You can bomb up that hill... yeah Or you can go up over that hill. Colin, that's when that hill, before the amphitheater was there. Yeah.
• 24:44
And that's the funny story from Jake, because Jake makes the turn, Colin just goes straight fucking up the hill. Yeah. And Jake thinks he's got it made, and here he is coming down to make the corner for start and finish.
• 24:58
Yeah. And here's freaking Colin running right at him. Yeah. So yeah, that, that's, that was, you know...
• 25:06
And you know, if, if, if Dave Lunz is listening to this, we would've won the first year if he'd got the bonus checkpoint, and we would've won by more- Uh, well... the second year if he'd got the bonus checkpoint. Wait.
• 25:16
He missed both of the bonuses. I- where's my bike? Yeah. [laughs] Where's my bike? We, we missed the podium a couple of times because, um, one time I, I think we missed one bonus and that cost us. Or no,
• 25:29
I know what it was. We were at team B, where you could share bikes, and if we were team A, and we all us- pretty much use the same bike anyways, if we were team A we would've made it. Ah.
• 25:39
So then we went to team A after that. And then the year after that we caught two flats on the first lap. Oh, I remember that year. And we were done. Yep, yep. We were done before 7:15. Yep, time to party. Yeah.
• 25:51
I mean, we still rode hard and I think we got fourth or fifth place. Yeah. But I mean- That was-... we, we still were out of contention pretty quick.
• 25:57
My, still my favorite is the team that's bike frame broke and they put it on their backpack. Yeah. 'Cause I woke up to start doing my laps that year and some guy goes ripping past me with a bike on his back.
• 26:08
[laughs] I'm like, "What's going on there? That's weird." And that was a team A team? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
• 26:14
Yeah, their frame broke halfway through the race, and they had their backup bike, and they talked to organizers and they said, you know, "This is the case, but our bike is still with us." And they towed it?
• 26:23
And they just put a, they put a backpack on and strapped on this frame and the entire bike and they just rode every lap with this bike on. [laughs] And they killed it.
• 26:30
I mean, yeah, they- And then they still, and they crushed it. [laughs] Classic. And the bike that they were using afterwards wasn't nearly as good as the one that cracked. Yeah. So.
• 26:37
It was an old Schwinn of some sort that just- Yeah, it was... broke in half. Yeah. But he did say it was creaking for years.
• 26:42
[laughs] 'Cause it's a steel bike, so of course it's gonna give you years of time before you're gonna break. Yeah.
• 26:49
So Corey, how, how crazy is your, your day with being the manager of the bonus checkpoints once the event is actually underway? Um, I pretty much go nonstop till about 4:00 or 5:00 before I just cash out.
• 27:03
I'm hosting a bonus, and I think I can say the time it, which if I can remember. Yeah. It's either noon or 1:00. So I'm gonna be able to get about five hours of sleep before I have to get back up and- Right...
• 27:15
kinda get, get some food in me and then figure out what I'm gonna do.
• 27:18
Um, but yeah, generally as the bonus manager, uh, last year I was put up on the, in, on the pedestal for a little bit and had to tell everybody everything and, um, and that was kind of exciting and I got to work out my new bits and my tight five minutes of whatever.
• 27:34
And, [laughs] and then- [laughs]... um, yeah, but then pretty much the race gets going, um, I always watch everybody leave, you know, and then I'm like, "All right, well, it's,
• 27:47
but in five minutes the next, the first bonus starts." Mm-hmm. You know, the first ones are gonna go out at 7:15.
• 27:52
Um, last year they started right at 7:00, but I decided I'm gonna start them at 7:15 and let those run two hours. Um, and then,
• 28:02
so I'll, I'll go to that bonus, the first one, whichever's closest, just make sure everything's going good, and then just bolt over to the next one, and then from there to the next two and just keep going. Yep.
• 28:13
And at some point I've got, you know, friends who I've, who've been doing this for years, or other people who have been doing this for years, I'm like- Just go to this one... yeah, I don't need to go to that one.
• 28:23
They've, they've got it dialed in. You know, like, like Dan on Chambers, he's gonna have something going on. Oh. You know, he's, he's- The UW Dan? Westphalia Dan? Yeah. Yeah. He's hosting a bonus. Um,
• 28:36
and uh, you know, he's gonna be fine without me being there. You know, so that gives me a chance to go check out Troutman.
• 28:43
I'm like deciding to be coy on this one, but, and you don't have to answer it 'cause I know you can't, is Jen doing a bonus checkpoint this year that I'm not going to? [laughs] Thank you for that answer. Yeah.
• 28:57
[laughs] It, yep. Um- All right. That's, that's what I need to hear. Yeah. And radio listeners, you did not need to hear. Right. So yeah, you'll have no idea. You have a whole week to think about [laughs]
• 29:12
which, which way my head went. [laughs] Um, yeah, I mean, there's, there's a lot of the, the regulars. Um, you know, and then, but I also was, like, telling people, you know, you can't,
• 29:26
we can't repeat every single bonus. Right. I know that last year- Right, you can't...
• 29:30
I know last year's bonus where you did this was amazing and everybody had the most fun in their entire lives, but if you were able to think of something that great once, I'm sure you can do it a second time.
• 29:41
You know, you're not just a one hit wonder in this neighborhood, you know? [laughs] And so- I know everyone loved doing pushups, but we're not doing them again this year. Yeah.
• 29:47
Yeah, we can, we can- [laughs] 'Cause I did not love doing pushups. We can confirm that pushups is not gonna be a bonus. Thank God. That was a good idea, though. It was. It was fun.
• 29:56
Um, one of the most fun things that I had doing this year w- was people would give me a description of their thing, of their bonus, and then I got to rename them to whatever I wanted to rename them as. [laughs] Which
• 30:07
gave them a slight hint of what was happening, but you know, you might have to catch a reference of something or dig a little bit deeper. I like ours a lot. I'll forward it to you guys- Yeah...
• 30:17
just so you have the update on it. But yeah. So yeah, I thought- We got two guys helping us... I thought you would like that- Yep... that title. I've already communicated with my assistants for this.
• 30:25
It's- I'm, I'm not registered, so I just take photos now. That's, yeah. That's kind of my- There you go. We're gonna- That's my new thing after having done it for several years...
• 30:31
hopefully put up, you don't have any extra tents, do you? Like camping tents? E- easy ups? No. Okay, we should- I, I got promoted... our, our only problem is, is rain. Oh, yeah Since obviously. Um, you know what?
• 30:43
We'll, we can- Well, we'll see. We can work it out, Tony... I think I'm gonna try to hit up Prock's house after this is done. They might have some, but- I mean, we have other alternatives, too.
• 30:53
We could always re- relocate pretty promptly and have someone- Sure... give direction to it if the weather's bad. Yeah. But it's not full speed. To- I wouldn't worry about it...
• 31:04
to just, uh, quick touch on, I ha- I did have one group, not that they were, like, offended, but they didn't, I don't think they figured out the reference of, of what their bonus was and what I called it. Mm.
• 31:15
And, um, and so they sent an email asking if, why it was called that, and if they could just change it to something that was a lot more bland and boring. And I said yes, or maybe Abby said yes. [laughs] Oh, okay.
• 31:29
Abby runs, uh, the... Last year if, if you participated, every stop you went to you got a zine page. Yeah. And then you got to build a zine. She did those. Um, she's doing something similar, but in a new realm- Format...
• 31:42
if you will. Yeah, a new format. Gonna be kick-ass. So she is our, our bonus, uh, artist. She's, um- That's what I'm saying. Yeah...
• 31:51
as, as I came into a complete panic last Friday and Saturday trying to come up with something, she really, really... I, I owe her 'cause she stepped up and- Yeah, you're not much of an artist She's... I am not an artist.
• 32:04
[laughs] Um, and she ki- I'm not a digital artist at all, and she kicked ass, so. I'm not a digital artist either. Yeah, yeah. I can do drawings. I can visualize everything. Drawings. Oh, I can't do that either. Yeah.
• 32:14
Cheeky monkey. Cheeky. I, I can come up with ideas, but then I can't put them onto- Yeah. Yeah, no, she, she's- I can describe them... I paint the word picture. I'm, I'm very excited- [laughs]...
• 32:24
about how these are, th- this is going to turn out. Cool. Yes. Very, very excited. Yeah. So you know it starts at noon on Saturday while the 24 is starting- Yep... to wrap up? BradyStreetFest.
• 32:36
Well, well that plus the Wausau 24 is also- 24 hour mountain bike race, dude... every time. Yeah. Oh, really? In Wausau?
• 32:42
[laughs] Well, we, we had this dumb idea one year, we didn't, haven't done it yet, but the 24- We were close... the 24 ends at 7:00 on Saturday- There was-... but the, the Wausau 24 ends at noon on Sunday.
• 32:53
So we're like, "We could race up there and get there by midnight and still do the last 12 hours of it, and have the team do the first 12 hours." Yeah. No. We need a b- That sounds terrible, right?
• 33:03
We need a, we need a bus driver to, so we can sleep in the bus on the way up there or a limo or something. I mean, gener- well, and with, uh, with, with my bonus, um, you know, responsibilities,
• 33:14
by, I'm so stoked because by 6:00, or even, not even, by like 5:00 when I hit that last bonus, like my, my job is done.
• 33:25
Now I can just go kick back and grab like a 12 pack and just sit there and watch riders go at the finish line. [laughs] You know, bands will be playing at the Riverwest Arby's. Um- Yeah. You know? Yeah.
• 33:34
And just, and just kinda hang out and just watch everything, you know, unfold from, from there, so that's pretty cool. And then an hour and a half later you're asleep. Um, by 10:00. The year we won it or took podium, uh,
• 33:48
we were like, "Well, we can't just..."
• 33:51
Normally my buddy Nikolai, who lived up in Duluth at the time, uh, now he's in Mooresville, North Carolina, but he, um, he would stay with, he'd drive down and he'd stay overnight, and then the next day he'd drive home.
• 34:04
And we were like, "Well, we just fucking took the podium. We can't just go back and get a pizza and watch Rat or whatever like we always do." [laughs] 'Cause that's normally what we did. That's what I've done.
• 34:12
We'd just watch, and we'd watch like Happy Gilmore or something and get like shuttle. We were like, "No, we're gonna go to this backyard party and rage."
• 34:18
And like we went there, and we're just like high-fiving everybody in sight and- Yeah, I, I did the exact same thing-... things worked up... when we won. I went home, went to bed. Yeah. I don't know.
• 34:28
We decided we should probably light it up for at least a couple hours and- Yeah... celebrate. We had bombs. I had, uh, that was when I had, uh,
• 34:36
oh, owner R- Wayne from Breakaway ride me down there in his Bullet with a big glass of Bullet. Yeah. And I can remember just spilling it the whole way there. [laughs] I'm like, "I have no reason to be in this right now."
• 34:47
[laughs] But then we won, so it was, you know, it was, it was different. I'm waiting for the cargo bike team to show up. Yeah. That, that hasn't happened yet. That'd be a cool cargo bike team. Yeah.
• 34:59
I rode a cargo bike the first year. My team did. We lost badly. Did you ride all, did you all share a cargo bike? Yeah. Team A. Team A?
• 35:07
I- I'm one of the few people that has a claim to fame that I've taken dead last and first in Team A. Wayne's team has done that, too. That's pretty good. Yeah. Right on. Yeah.
• 35:19
Well, Corey, thanks, uh, thanks for being on. You got any final, final thoughts you wanna leave our listener with? Um, yeah, so if, uh, if you are participating, we're really stoked that you're gonna be part of it.
• 35:30
Just remember that everybody there is a volunteer, that we're all working together to make this happen every year. Uh, you know, don't, don't try to cut the line.
• 35:37
You know, be, be respectful to the people that are working out there. You know, it's their time. They're just donating it. They're just trying to have a good time. In other words, don't be a jerk. Don't be a jerk.
• 35:47
Right on. Yeah. So yeah. Well- That's about it... cool. Well, you're welcome to come back any time. We wanna do a- Cool. That was a-... a post, uh, post- Follow-up... 24 wrap up or something. Yeah.
• 35:56
Yeah, but, uh, the, uh, studio's always open, so. Cool. Yeah, no, thanks for having me. That went by way quicker than I anticipated. [laughs] I mean, I've, I've hung out with Tony multiple times, and usually it drags.
• 36:06
[laughs] No, I'm just, I'm just kidding. I love you, Tony. Corey's dying after this. [laughs] Just, listeners, listener. Listener. No, this is great. Thank you guys so much for having me. Look for Corey's tattoo. Yeah.
• 36:16
Oh, yeah. We'll have it, we'll have it in the show notes. All right. All right, everybody, next week. Peace. [upbeat music]
