Latest / The Epstein Chronicles / Mega Edition: Bryan Kohberger's Family Issues A Statement In The Wake Of His Arrest (8/20/26)

- 0:00Speaker 1: Everyone, and welcome back to the program. On Friday, Dateline
- 0:05Speaker 1: NBC had a special about the Moscow murders, and we
- 0:10Speaker 1: learned some pretty interesting stuff during that presentation by Dateline. Now,
- 0:17Speaker 1: usually we just get a rehash of everything that we
- 0:20Speaker 1: know already and they repackage it and serve it back up.
- 0:24Speaker 1: But in this case, we learned some pretty interesting stuff.
- 0:28Speaker 1: And previously we talked about the allegations that Brian Coohberger
- 0:33Speaker 1: broke into a colleague's home in order to move her
- 0:36Speaker 1: furniture around and freak her out so that she'd reach
- 0:39Speaker 1: out to him so that he'd come and help her
- 0:42Speaker 1: secure her residence. Now, of course, these are just rumors
- 0:46Speaker 1: for now. We haven't heard that from any official source,
- 0:49Speaker 1: so we have to make sure that we keep that
- 0:51Speaker 1: in mind. But with everything that we've learned about Brian
- 0:54Speaker 1: Cohberger and everything we know about him, it certainly attracts
- 0:58Speaker 1: with me that he would do something like that. And remember,
- 1:00Speaker 1: the source that NBC is talking about is the woman
- 1:04Speaker 1: that this happened to, so why would she lie about that?
- 1:08Speaker 1: As far as I'm concerned, most of these accounts of
- 1:11Speaker 1: Brian Colberger and what he was like and how he
- 1:14Speaker 1: conducted himself. I find them to be truthful, and that's
- 1:17Speaker 1: because we've heard basically the same stuff from a bunch
- 1:21Speaker 1: of different people. But now we're hearing that Brian Colberger's
- 1:25Speaker 1: sister feared that Brian might have been involved in the murders,
- 1:29Speaker 1: and they were so concerned that they dove into the
- 1:33Speaker 1: white Honda Alantra dig in for clues. Today we have
- 1:36Speaker 1: an article from The Independent and the headline Brian Coberger's
- 1:41Speaker 1: sister feared he could be involved in Idaho murders before
- 1:45Speaker 1: sudden arrest. Sources told NBC's Dateline that the accused killer's
- 1:50Speaker 1: family searched as white Hondai Alantra for possible evidence of
- 1:54Speaker 1: the crime. Now, imagine your own family thinks you're capable
- 1:57Speaker 1: of something like this. Anyone ever came to my house
- 2:01Speaker 1: and told my parents that I murdered four people in
- 2:04Speaker 1: their home, They would not believe it for one single second.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Certainly not enough to dive into the Hondai a Lantra
- 2:10Speaker 1: and start looking for evidence. Now, of course, if the
- 2:13Speaker 1: police showed up with evidence, oh, my parents would believe them,
- 2:17Speaker 1: believe that, and I wouldn't have to worry about the police.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Forget it, my mom would kill me. But for me,
- 2:22Speaker 1: the family members saying oh, we better look in the
- 2:25Speaker 1: car to see if there's evidence is a huge tell.
- 2:28Speaker 1: This article was authored by Rachel Sharp. Brian Coberger's sister
- 2:33Speaker 1: feared that her brother was involved in the stabbings afore
- 2:37Speaker 1: University of Idaho students before police swooped on their parents'
- 2:41Speaker 1: home and arrested him for murder. According to a Bombshell report,
- 2:46Speaker 1: So again, look, that's bad, right, not a good look.
- 2:49Speaker 1: How many of you out there would have your sister
- 2:52Speaker 1: jumping into your car looking for evidence. I'm sure not
- 2:55Speaker 1: many of you. Maybe some of you, some of you
- 2:57Speaker 1: might not have a good relationship with your brother or
- 2:59Speaker 1: sister whatever. Okay, great, But the vast majority of people,
- 3:03Speaker 1: their parents and their siblings aren't gonna just think right
- 3:07Speaker 1: out of the box that their loved one is the
- 3:09Speaker 1: one responsible for these kinds of heinous murders. Unless there's
- 3:13Speaker 1: a reason for your sister to feel that way, or
- 3:16Speaker 1: for your parents to feel that way. That's not a
- 3:19Speaker 1: normal emotion. That's not what normal people think of their children.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Sources told NBC's Dateline that one of the accused killers
- 3:27Speaker 1: older siblings grew increasingly suspicious of her brother and his
- 3:31Speaker 1: behavior when the family gathered to spend the holidays together.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Her suspicions were so great that at one point, several
- 3:39Speaker 1: family members searched mister Coohberger's white Hondai a Lantra for
- 3:43Speaker 1: a possible evidence of the crime. They said, Madison Mogan,
- 3:47Speaker 1: Kaylee Gonsalbis, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin were found brutally
- 3:52Speaker 1: stabbed to death in the off campus home in Moscow, Idaho,
- 3:56Speaker 1: that the three women shared with two other roommates, back
- 3:59Speaker 1: on the thirteenth of November, so over the Christmas holiday.
- 4:04Speaker 1: This is what his sister was doing digging through his
- 4:07Speaker 1: car because she had her own suspicions that old Coburger
- 4:11Speaker 1: was involved. Meanwhile, you have a bunch of goofballs sitting
- 4:14Speaker 1: on the Internet talking about how Brian Kohberger is innocent
- 4:18Speaker 1: and he's not the right guy. Well, this is bad
- 4:21Speaker 1: news for people like that. If his own family thought
- 4:24Speaker 1: he was capable of doing something like this, chances are
- 4:28Speaker 1: we got the right guy here, folks. And look, of course,
- 4:31Speaker 1: nothing is set in stone right until Brian Colberger has
- 4:34Speaker 1: been convicted. He is innocent of these crimes. But that
- 4:38Speaker 1: doesn't mean that he's not the prime suspect. That doesn't
- 4:41Speaker 1: mean that he's not basically the only one that could
- 4:45Speaker 1: be responsible for this as far as we know, And
- 4:48Speaker 1: the more information we get by the day, the more
- 4:51Speaker 1: I'm convinced that he is the killer. And hearing stuff
- 4:54Speaker 1: like this about his sister and her reaction, it makes
- 4:57Speaker 1: me even more confident that we're on the right path here.
- 5:02Speaker 1: For more than six weeks, no suspects were publicly identified,
- 5:06Speaker 1: and Leeds appeared to have gone cold, and that really
- 5:10Speaker 1: wasn't the case, was it. They were hard at work
- 5:12Speaker 1: behind the scenes, putting together a profile and building a
- 5:16Speaker 1: case against Brian Kolberger. And I was critical of them.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I'll be the first to admit I wanted to see
- 5:21Speaker 1: some action. I knew that having all of those FBI agents,
- 5:25Speaker 1: having the BAU, and all of those other resources that
- 5:28Speaker 1: were available to them, I knew that that should accelerate
- 5:31Speaker 1: things and there should be no reason why they shouldn't
- 5:34Speaker 1: be able to find somebody responsible for what happened. And
- 5:38Speaker 1: looking back on it all with hindsight, the police did
- 5:41Speaker 1: a masterful job here, and it certainly didn't take all
- 5:44Speaker 1: that long when you're looking at it in context, but
- 5:47Speaker 1: at the time it seemed like it was taking forever. Remember,
- 5:50Speaker 1: we had a murderer on the loose who was capable
- 5:53Speaker 1: of killing four people in cold blood in their home,
- 5:56Speaker 1: so of course people wanted that person brought to justice.
- 6:00Speaker 1: In mid December, mister Coburger, a twenty eight year old
- 6:03Speaker 1: criminology PhD student at Washington State University, embarked on a
- 6:08Speaker 1: cross country trip with his father from his student rental
- 6:11Speaker 1: home in Pullman, Washington, back to the family home in
- 6:14Speaker 1: all Brightsville, Pennsylvania to spend the holidays together. But during
- 6:18Speaker 1: this time at home, his family members noticed that he
- 6:21Speaker 1: was behaving somewhat bizarrely. The source said that mister Coburger
- 6:26Speaker 1: was constantly wearing latex gloves, including inside their own home.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Imagine your brother comes home from college and he's never
- 6:34Speaker 1: done anything like that before, and all of a sudden,
- 6:37Speaker 1: dudes running around wearing latex gloves, not wanting to touch anything.
- 6:42Speaker 1: He has the white hondaei alantra. You start to put
- 6:44Speaker 1: the pieces together. Imagine what that realization must be like,
- 6:48Speaker 1: how it hits you like ten thousand pounds of bricks.
- 6:51Speaker 1: I feel real bad for Brian Coberger's family. I've said
- 6:54Speaker 1: this before, and I feel bad for his sisters who
- 6:57Speaker 1: lost their jobs. One of his two older sisters began
- 7:01Speaker 1: to wonder if he could have played a part in
- 7:03Speaker 1: the murders, and at one point she raised her concerns
- 7:06Speaker 1: with other family members. She loudly pointed out that at
- 7:10Speaker 1: the time of the murder, her brother was living just
- 7:13Speaker 1: a few miles from the crime scene, and that he
- 7:15Speaker 1: could have drove a white Hondae Alantra and the make
- 7:18Speaker 1: and the color of the vehicle at the center of
- 7:20Speaker 1: the investigation. And kudos to the sister here, but man,
- 7:24Speaker 1: imagine having that opinion of your brother that he's capable
- 7:27Speaker 1: of doing something like this, along with his bizarre tendency
- 7:31Speaker 1: to wear latex gloves all the time. She believed that
- 7:34Speaker 1: the family should consider that mister Coberger might have killed
- 7:37Speaker 1: the four victims. The source said. Mister Coberger's father allegedly
- 7:42Speaker 1: defended his son and insisted he could not have been involved.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Who wants to believe that their son could be a killer, Right, Hey, Dad,
- 7:50Speaker 1: I think Brian is the one who murdered all the
- 7:53Speaker 1: kids in Moscow. You'd think, what, what are you talking
- 7:56Speaker 1: about right now, get out of my kitchen with that shit.
- 7:58Speaker 1: That's a parent's reaction, and that is the automatic reaction,
- 8:03Speaker 1: right that nobody wants to believe that their kids capable
- 8:06Speaker 1: of doing something like this. But obviously his sister had
- 8:10Speaker 1: a more sober view of who Brian Colberger was. But
- 8:14Speaker 1: the concerns were clearly big enough for several of the
- 8:17Speaker 1: family members to reportedly decide to search the twenty eight
- 8:20Speaker 1: year old's vehicle to look for possible evidence. That must
- 8:24Speaker 1: have been a fun conversation. Hey, Brian, give me your keys.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I need to go look in your car to see
- 8:29Speaker 1: if I can find any evidence of you being a murderer.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Hand over those keys. Pal. By that point, police said,
- 8:36Speaker 1: mister Coburger had already been spotted cleaning his car out
- 8:39Speaker 1: with bleach, and so the family members didn't find anything
- 8:43Speaker 1: of note, the source said, and the bleach is going
- 8:45Speaker 1: to come back to haunt them. Oh, you might have
- 8:47Speaker 1: cleaned some stuff up, but the journey is going to
- 8:50Speaker 1: want to know why you're using bleach inside of your car. Okay,
- 8:54Speaker 1: They're going to want to know why you the man
- 8:57Speaker 1: who is being accused of these murders with all of
- 9:00Speaker 1: this evidence piled up against you was using bleach to
- 9:04Speaker 1: clean out the interior of their car. That's going to
- 9:07Speaker 1: be a question that the jury certainly is going to
- 9:09Speaker 1: want to have answered, and that Brian Kohberger is not
- 9:12Speaker 1: going to be able to answer. It's not clear if
- 9:16Speaker 1: mister Coburger was aware of his family member's suspicions that
- 9:19Speaker 1: he could have been behind the murders, or what potential
- 9:23Speaker 1: prior behavior may have led his sister to suspect him
- 9:26Speaker 1: capable of carrying out such a brutal crime. Exactly. That's
- 9:30Speaker 1: what I've been saying. You have to have exhibited some
- 9:33Speaker 1: kind of behavior in the past for people to say
- 9:35Speaker 1: to themselves, hey, that could be Brian who did this.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Soon after, in the early hours of December thirtieth, law
- 9:43Speaker 1: enforcement swooped on the family home and arrested him for
- 9:46Speaker 1: the murders. At the time of his arrest, the source said,
- 9:49Speaker 1: mister Coburger was wide awake, standing in the kitchen, wearing
- 9:53Speaker 1: latex gloves and putting his personal trash and plastic bags
- 9:57Speaker 1: to take it out to a neighbor's trash can very
- 10:00Speaker 1: normal behavior, right, This is what normal people do in
- 10:03Speaker 1: the middle of the night in their living room when
- 10:05Speaker 1: they're home on Christmas vacation at their parents' house. An
- 10:09Speaker 1: attorney close to mister Coberger's family declined to comment on
- 10:12Speaker 1: the revelations outlined in date lines the killings on King Road.
- 10:17Speaker 1: On Monday, May twenty second, he will appear in court
- 10:20Speaker 1: for his arraynment on four counts of first degree of
- 10:23Speaker 1: murder and burglary. The twenty eight year old is scheduled
- 10:26Speaker 1: to be arraigned in Letah County Court in Moscow, Idaho,
- 10:30Speaker 1: where he is expected to enter a plea on the charges.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Mister Coburger had been due to appear in court for
- 10:37Speaker 1: a week long preliminary hearing on June twenty sixth, where
- 10:41Speaker 1: the prosecution would lay out the case and evidence against
- 10:45Speaker 1: the suspect. However, last Tuesday, a grand jury indicted mister
- 10:50Speaker 1: Colberger on the charges, paving the way for the case
- 10:53Speaker 1: to proceed without and leading to the cancelation of the
- 10:57Speaker 1: preliminary hearing. Mister Colberger is accused of breaking into the
- 11:02Speaker 1: student home in the early hours of November thirteenth and
- 11:06Speaker 1: stabbing the four students to death in a horror attack
- 11:09Speaker 1: that rock the college town of Moscow and send shockwaves
- 11:13Speaker 1: across America. The motive remains unknown, and it is still
- 11:17Speaker 1: unclear what connection the Washington State University PhD student had
- 11:23Speaker 1: to the University of Idaho's students, if any, prior to
- 11:26Speaker 1: the murders. Well, what about the connections of Instagram? What
- 11:30Speaker 1: about the connections of the mad Greek. Let's not act
- 11:34Speaker 1: like those don't exist. Okay, they do. You can state
- 11:37Speaker 1: them and then just say, hey, look, these are rumors.
- 11:40Speaker 1: These are solid rumors that have been put out there
- 11:43Speaker 1: by people close to the case. And then if people
- 11:46Speaker 1: want to believe it, fine, If they don't want to
- 11:48Speaker 1: believe it, that's fine too. But those are the rumors
- 11:51Speaker 1: that are out there, and they're not rumors that were
- 11:53Speaker 1: started on like four Chan or something like that. They
- 11:56Speaker 1: come from relatively reliable sources as far as we know. However,
- 12:02Speaker 1: the affid David released in January revealed that mister Coberger's
- 12:06Speaker 1: DNA was found on a knife sheath left behind at
- 12:09Speaker 1: the scene of the murders. It was also revealed that
- 12:12Speaker 1: his white Hondai Lantra was caught on surveillance footage at
- 12:16Speaker 1: the crime scene, and that one of the surviving roommates
- 12:20Speaker 1: came face to face with the killer, who was masked
- 12:23Speaker 1: and dressed from head to toe in black and with
- 12:25Speaker 1: bushy eyebrows as he left the home. In the aftermath
- 12:29Speaker 1: of the murders, new details have also emerged about what
- 12:33Speaker 1: was found during the initial search of his apartment and
- 12:37Speaker 1: a rental storage unit. The court documents show that two
- 12:40Speaker 1: items found in his apartment tested positive for blood. Now
- 12:44Speaker 1: we don't know if that blood was his, just to reiterate,
- 12:47Speaker 1: or if it was the blood of one of these
- 12:50Speaker 1: victims or from somebody else. We don't know yet. The
- 12:54Speaker 1: two items were a mattress cover on the bed and
- 12:56Speaker 1: an uncased pillow, both of which had visible aettish brown stains.
- 13:01Speaker 1: The documents do not reveal who the blood belongs to.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Investigator sees a string of other items from his home,
- 13:08Speaker 1: including possible human and animal hair strands, a disposable glove,
- 13:13Speaker 1: and a computer. The murder weapon, a fixed blade knife,
- 13:17Speaker 1: has still never been found. As a criminal justice PhD
- 13:21Speaker 1: student at Washington State University, mister Coberger lived just fifteen
- 13:26Speaker 1: minutes from the victims over the Idaho Washington border in Pullman.
- 13:31Speaker 1: He had moved there from Pennsylvania and began his studies
- 13:34Speaker 1: there that summer, having just completed his first semester before
- 13:38Speaker 1: his arrest. Before this, he studied criminology at the Sallas University,
- 13:44Speaker 1: first as an undergraduate and then finishing his graduate studies
- 13:48Speaker 1: in June of twenty twenty. While there, he studied under
- 13:53Speaker 1: renowned forensic psychologist Katherine Ramsland, who interviewed the BTK serial
- 13:58Speaker 1: killer and co wrote the book Confession of a Serial Killer,
- 14:02Speaker 1: The Untold Story of Dennis Rader, the BTK Killer with him.
- 14:07Speaker 1: My guess is Ramsland will get the offer to write
- 14:10Speaker 1: a book about Brian Coohberger as well, and I'm sure
- 14:13Speaker 1: she'll get access to him the same way she did
- 14:16Speaker 1: the BTK. He also carried out a research project to
- 14:20Speaker 1: understand how emotions and psychological trades influence decision making when
- 14:26Speaker 1: committing a crime. Now, the criminology PhD student is set
- 14:31Speaker 1: to appear in Leayta County Courthouse in Idaho for his
- 14:34Speaker 1: preliminary hearing on June twenty sixth. He is facing life
- 14:38Speaker 1: in prison or the death penalty for the murders that
- 14:41Speaker 1: have rocked the small college town of Moscow and hid
- 14:44Speaker 1: headlines around the globe. Anytime we have one of these
- 14:49Speaker 1: specials like Dateline or you know, anything like that that's
- 14:53Speaker 1: based on these murders or any case, there's always a
- 14:56Speaker 1: few nuggets inside of those documentaries or a present that
- 15:01Speaker 1: end up being pretty damn interesting. And here we certainly
- 15:05Speaker 1: have an interesting scenario playing out where Brian Kolberger's own
- 15:09Speaker 1: family members, at least some of them, thought that he
- 15:12Speaker 1: was the man who might possibly be responsible for these murders.
- 15:17Speaker 1: And if his own family feels that way, why should
- 15:19Speaker 1: I be giving him the benefit of the doubt? All right, folks,
- 15:23Speaker 1: that's gonna do it for this one. All of the
- 15:25Speaker 1: information that goes with the episode can be found in
- 15:28Speaker 1: the description box. What's up everyone, and welcome back to
- 15:32Speaker 1: the program. The family of the man suspected of murdering
- 15:38Speaker 1: the four college students in Moscow, Idaho, has released a statement,
- 15:42Speaker 1: and in that statement, they're asking that the public waits
- 15:46Speaker 1: for all of the facts to be in before they
- 15:49Speaker 1: make any sort of rush to judgment. Now, I can
- 15:52Speaker 1: understand that no parent wants to think that their kid
- 15:56Speaker 1: is capable of such a heinous act as we've seen
- 16:00Speaker 1: go down in Moscow, So of course your parents want
- 16:03Speaker 1: to give you the benefit of the doubt right. You
- 16:06Speaker 1: have a kid with no criminal history, never got in
- 16:09Speaker 1: trouble before, and if you're his parents, then he says
- 16:12Speaker 1: to you, hey, look, I didn't do this. I'm sure
- 16:14Speaker 1: you want to believe him. However, the circumstantial evidence that
- 16:18Speaker 1: we have so far that the public has available to them,
- 16:23Speaker 1: it's not looking good for Brian Coohberger. And if we
- 16:27Speaker 1: have circumstantial evidence that has been provided that doesn't look
- 16:31Speaker 1: great for him, Well, what do you think the investigators have? Now?
- 16:36Speaker 1: He can easily say that he had been to that
- 16:39Speaker 1: house before, to a party or something like that, and
- 16:42Speaker 1: that explains why his DNA is there. Now. Is that
- 16:45Speaker 1: gonna be enough for him to get off here or
- 16:48Speaker 1: for a jury not to convict him. I highly doubt it,
- 16:52Speaker 1: but I wouldn't be surprised if that's the strategy or
- 16:56Speaker 1: the defense that they use. The reason that my client
- 17:00Speaker 1: DNA is there is because he was at one of
- 17:02Speaker 1: these parties that was thrown at this house, and with
- 17:05Speaker 1: it already being established that it was a house where
- 17:08Speaker 1: there would be people there without the homeowners or the
- 17:12Speaker 1: tenants even being home, he can say, look, I was there,
- 17:16Speaker 1: even if they didn't see me, I was part of
- 17:18Speaker 1: a big group that was hanging out there, and that's
- 17:20Speaker 1: why my DNA is in this house. And it'll be
- 17:23Speaker 1: up to the prosecution, remember, to prove that he is
- 17:27Speaker 1: the one that is guilty of these crimes. So he's
- 17:31Speaker 1: going to try and say that it wasn't him. Obviously,
- 17:34Speaker 1: he's going to plead not guilty. He's already said that.
- 17:37Speaker 1: You know, he's waiting to be exonerated, and he shocked
- 17:40Speaker 1: that he was arrested, all sorts of stuff. And as
- 17:44Speaker 1: his parents, if he's telling you that, until you see
- 17:47Speaker 1: the evidence yourself, you want to give your son the
- 17:50Speaker 1: benefit of the doubt. Now the rest of us, well,
- 17:54Speaker 1: I highly doubt that's going to happen. And that's not
- 17:57Speaker 1: just partial to this case. That's how it usual goes.
- 18:00Speaker 1: People make their minds up, People take a look at
- 18:02Speaker 1: the evidence that's presented, and then they make an opinion
- 18:05Speaker 1: about it. It's no different than the old days when
- 18:08Speaker 1: we'd all be at work hanging out around the water
- 18:10Speaker 1: cooler talking about OJ Simpson. It's just a bigger platform. Now.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Instead of everybody hanging around the water cooler, we're all
- 18:19Speaker 1: here hanging out on the internet and talking about what
- 18:22Speaker 1: went down, and that's just the way these stories go.
- 18:26Speaker 1: So that's why when people talk about Jerry Pools and
- 18:29Speaker 1: this that the other thing. Public opinions one thing. What
- 18:33Speaker 1: the jurors and what happens in that courtroom, well that's
- 18:36Speaker 1: a completely different thing altogether. And the public's going to
- 18:40Speaker 1: talk about these cases and the public's going to have opinions,
- 18:43Speaker 1: and there's no stopping that. What really matters, however, is
- 18:48Speaker 1: what happens in the courtroom when this trial starts and
- 18:52Speaker 1: the prosecution and the defense start trading barbs. That's when
- 18:57Speaker 1: it's gonna count. And the whole idea about the jury
- 19:00Speaker 1: being tainted, well, that's out the window already. I've seen
- 19:04Speaker 1: people defending Brian Coohberger saying that he's innocent, saying that
- 19:09Speaker 1: he's not guilty, saying that this is not going to
- 19:11Speaker 1: be the right guy. The small town police force acted
- 19:15Speaker 1: too quickly. So if people are thinking like that already
- 19:18Speaker 1: on the internet, then how are you going to try
- 19:20Speaker 1: and convince me that the jury pool is tainted because
- 19:23Speaker 1: of conversation on the internet. That is just absurd and
- 19:29Speaker 1: there's no way to stop it. It's just like I
- 19:30Speaker 1: said earlier, around the Water cooler. In the old days,
- 19:33Speaker 1: people would talk about whatever the hot topic was, whatever
- 19:36Speaker 1: the news was. Now it's just escalated to a different
- 19:40Speaker 1: level because we can all do it from the comfort
- 19:42Speaker 1: of our homes and from behind a computer screen. So
- 19:45Speaker 1: people are going to continue to talk about this, and
- 19:48Speaker 1: for unfortunately, I should say, for Brian Cohberger, people are
- 19:51Speaker 1: gonna have some opinions about whether he's innocent or guilty.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Me personally, I think that the circumstantial evidence that we
- 19:59Speaker 1: have presented to us so far is certainly enough for
- 20:02Speaker 1: probable cause here. Now, besides that, I haven't seen any
- 20:07Speaker 1: of the other evidence, and neither has anyone else in
- 20:09Speaker 1: the public, so we don't know what the prosecution has,
- 20:14Speaker 1: but chances are what they do have is pretty strong
- 20:17Speaker 1: or they're not going to get a warrant like this.
- 20:19Speaker 1: And remember it's not just the small town police force.
- 20:24Speaker 1: You're talking about the FBI, You're talking about the state police,
- 20:27Speaker 1: and the slew of other experts that were involved here.
- 20:31Speaker 1: So typically that means they have a pretty strong case,
- 20:34Speaker 1: at least as far as probable cause. And we're gonna
- 20:37Speaker 1: learn a lot more about this when he gets extradited.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Once he gets back to Idaho, and we get a
- 20:42Speaker 1: look at the charging documents, the AFFI David, all of
- 20:46Speaker 1: that stuff, we'll be able to make heads or tails
- 20:49Speaker 1: at least a little bit more of what's going on here.
- 20:53Speaker 1: So with that said, let's get into this article from
- 20:56Speaker 1: Newsweek and let's see what Brian Koberger's family had to
- 21:00Speaker 1: say about the arrest. This article was published by Newsweek
- 21:06Speaker 1: and the headline Idaho murder suspect Brian Cohberger's family make statement.
- 21:13Speaker 1: This article was authored by Anna Commander. The family of
- 21:18Speaker 1: Brian Coberger, the suspect who was charged with murdering for
- 21:22Speaker 1: University of Idaho's students last November, has released a statement
- 21:26Speaker 1: saying that they care deeply for the victims' families and
- 21:29Speaker 1: will continue to love and support their son. And you know,
- 21:33Speaker 1: look again, I don't want to fault the family for
- 21:36Speaker 1: coming out and saying, you know, I love and support
- 21:38Speaker 1: my son, especially he's just been arrested. So if you're
- 21:43Speaker 1: a mom or a dad, like I said in the opening,
- 21:45Speaker 1: you want to think the best of your kid, and
- 21:49Speaker 1: you don't want to jump to conclusions and just say
- 21:51Speaker 1: all right, that's it. You're guilty because you've been arrested.
- 21:55Speaker 1: So I can understand the family coming out here and
- 21:57Speaker 1: being a little bit vocal and saying, look, we're gonna
- 22:00Speaker 1: respect the process. We're gonna see what happens as far
- 22:03Speaker 1: as the trial goes, but we're standing by our loved one.
- 22:09Speaker 1: News Nation reporter Brian Enton posted this statement from Colberger's
- 22:13Speaker 1: family to Twitter on Sunday. The family statement said, first
- 22:17Speaker 1: and foremost, we care deeply for the four families who
- 22:20Speaker 1: have lost their precious children. There are no words that
- 22:23Speaker 1: can adequately express the sadness we feel, and we pray
- 22:27Speaker 1: each day for them. Now that's a nice gesture, right,
- 22:32Speaker 1: nice thing to come out and say, because remember, those
- 22:34Speaker 1: families are affected the most. They lost their children. They're
- 22:38Speaker 1: not coming home. There's not going to be any visitation
- 22:40Speaker 1: hours for Zana, or for Ethan, or for kay Lee
- 22:45Speaker 1: or for Madison. It continued, we will continue to let
- 22:49Speaker 1: the legal process unfold, and as a family, we will
- 22:53Speaker 1: love and support our son and brother. We have fully
- 22:57Speaker 1: cooperated with law enforcement agencies in an attempt to seek
- 23:00Speaker 1: the truth and promote his presumption of innocence, rather than
- 23:04Speaker 1: judge unknown facts and make erroneous assumptions. Now, this is
- 23:09Speaker 1: a different way of going about it than Brian Laundry's family.
- 23:13Speaker 1: If you remember the way that the Laundry is clammed
- 23:16Speaker 1: up and the way that they acted, it was just
- 23:18Speaker 1: all bad right from Jump Street. At least this family's
- 23:22Speaker 1: coming out and showing a little bit of emotion, showing
- 23:24Speaker 1: that they have a little bit of empathy for these
- 23:27Speaker 1: murdered students, So I think that is a mark in
- 23:32Speaker 1: their favor. However, we don't know all of the facts yet,
- 23:35Speaker 1: and everything's on the table. As usual, I remain agnostic
- 23:39Speaker 1: until we have the facts in front of us, and
- 23:41Speaker 1: when I say the facts, I mean the actual facts
- 23:44Speaker 1: of the investigation. Police took the twenty eight year old
- 23:49Speaker 1: Coburger into custody at his parents' home in Chestnut Hill
- 23:52Speaker 1: Township at Pennsylvania on December thirtieth. He is charged with
- 23:56Speaker 1: the murders of Kaylee Gonsalvez, Madison Mogan, Xana Kernodle, and
- 24:00Speaker 1: Ethan Chapin. The four students were found stabbed to death
- 24:03Speaker 1: in their beds in an off campus residence on November thirteenth.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Police believe Colberger broke into the student shared living space
- 24:12Speaker 1: with the intent to commit murder before traveling cross country
- 24:16Speaker 1: to Pennsylvania, And it was a shrewd move on the
- 24:18Speaker 1: prosecutor's part as well to nall him with this robbery charge,
- 24:22Speaker 1: because the robbery automatically says that this was premeditated. So
- 24:28Speaker 1: if it was premeditated robbery, it was premeditated murder as well.
- 24:31Speaker 1: So it was a good move on the prosecutor's part
- 24:33Speaker 1: there to nall him with that robbery charge, and I
- 24:36Speaker 1: wouldn't be shocked to see more charges later on down
- 24:38Speaker 1: the road as well. Coburger was a PhD student in
- 24:43Speaker 1: the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University,
- 24:48Speaker 1: less than ten miles from the University of Idaho, so
- 24:52Speaker 1: he was not far away. And we talked about this before,
- 24:56Speaker 1: but it would have been easy for him to stalk
- 24:58Speaker 1: these girls, to stalk them his house, to case it,
- 25:01Speaker 1: and to follow them while not raising too much suspicion
- 25:06Speaker 1: because he's from the general vicinity anyway. You know, if
- 25:09Speaker 1: he's lurking around in Moscow and say he got carted
- 25:12Speaker 1: by a cop or something, you know, police officer asked
- 25:14Speaker 1: him for his ID, they'd see that he lives in Pullman.
- 25:18Speaker 1: It's not out of place for somebody from Pullman to
- 25:20Speaker 1: be hanging out in Moscow. So the more we learn
- 25:23Speaker 1: about this guy and what he was up to, the
- 25:25Speaker 1: more it seems to me anyway, that this was all
- 25:28Speaker 1: planned out. He thought he was going to have himself
- 25:31Speaker 1: a nice, sophisticated murder here, but instead, Captain Criminology forgot
- 25:36Speaker 1: one of the first rules of being a crook, don't
- 25:40Speaker 1: use your own vehicle. These murders have shaken our community,
- 25:44Speaker 1: and I know that no arrest will restore the families
- 25:47Speaker 1: or bring these young students back. However, we believe in
- 25:50Speaker 1: the criminal process and continue to extend our most sincere
- 25:54Speaker 1: condolences to the families, said Moscow Police Chief James Frye
- 25:58Speaker 1: on Friday. Police also said mister Coberger's probable cause AFFID
- 26:03Speaker 1: David's remains sealed until the arrest warrant is returned to
- 26:07Speaker 1: the court. The factual basis of this case will also
- 26:10Speaker 1: remain sealed until the suspect makes an initial appearance in
- 26:14Speaker 1: Idaho court. To expedite the process of transportation back to Idaho,
- 26:19Speaker 1: Coburger said he will waive extradition. According to his attorney,
- 26:24Speaker 1: Jason Lebar, now I look at this two different ways.
- 26:27Speaker 1: One he wants to play games with the prosecutors and
- 26:32Speaker 1: get back there to engage in that right away, or
- 26:35Speaker 1: two he's really going to try and beat this case
- 26:38Speaker 1: and act like he's innocent. One of those two options,
- 26:41Speaker 1: in my opinion, is why he's waiving this extradition. Mister
- 26:47Speaker 1: Coburger is eager to be exonerated of these charges and
- 26:50Speaker 1: looks forward to resolving these matters as promptly as possible.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Labar said in a statement. Mister Coberger has been accused
- 26:57Speaker 1: of very serious crimes, but the American justice system cloaks
- 27:01Speaker 1: him in a veil of innocence. He should be presumed
- 27:05Speaker 1: innocent until proven otherwise, not try it in the court
- 27:09Speaker 1: of public opinion. See there they go with that public
- 27:12Speaker 1: opinion thing. Glenn Maxwell's lawyer tried this and it didn't
- 27:16Speaker 1: work out well for them. We've seen it with Keith Rayniery.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Him and his lawyers tried it, or Kelly tried it.
- 27:22Speaker 1: It's not going to work out well for them either
- 27:24Speaker 1: if they try, and you know, focus on what the
- 27:28Speaker 1: public is talking about, what the public narrative is. That
- 27:32Speaker 1: means ungats inside of a courtroom. Meanwhile, retired FBI agent
- 27:38Speaker 1: Jennifer Kofendaffer took to Twitter on Sunday and predicted that
- 27:42Speaker 1: Coburger will be back in Moscow, Idaho, by the end
- 27:45Speaker 1: of the week to begin the judicial process. Koffendaffer told
- 27:50Speaker 1: Newsweek on Sunday, I think it's a smart and responsible
- 27:53Speaker 1: response to make. As a parent, you want to support
- 27:55Speaker 1: your child. It is normal and natural to believe your
- 27:58Speaker 1: child is innocent, especially against atrocities like these. It was
- 28:03Speaker 1: nice to acknowledge the victims whose lives were brutally taken
- 28:06Speaker 1: from them, and I agree with her with that. I'm
- 28:09Speaker 1: not going to jump down the parents' throats here, considering
- 28:12Speaker 1: we don't have all of the evidence yet. They don't
- 28:14Speaker 1: have all of the evidence yet, and who knows what
- 28:17Speaker 1: their relationship is with their son. He might have been
- 28:20Speaker 1: someone who never got in trouble, never gave them any
- 28:23Speaker 1: reason to suspect he was gonna get in trouble, and
- 28:26Speaker 1: they believe him no matter what he says. There are
- 28:29Speaker 1: parents out there that will believe their children no matter what.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Kaufendaffer added, the suspects family's opinions really have no relevance here,
- 28:37Speaker 1: and no doubt to me, law enforcement will look into
- 28:40Speaker 1: the parents to see if they aided and abetted him.
- 28:44Speaker 1: It is very plausible that they did not know about
- 28:46Speaker 1: the alleged crimes he committed. Now again, I'm agnostic. I'm
- 28:50Speaker 1: not saying one way or the other what they did
- 28:52Speaker 1: or didn't do, because I don't know. I would hope
- 28:55Speaker 1: that these parents wouldn't help him, But we saw down
- 28:59Speaker 1: in the Gabby Patito case how the laundryes rolled, and boy,
- 29:03Speaker 1: old boy, did that leave a bad taste in my mouth.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Any parent who's going to aid in a bed their
- 29:08Speaker 1: child if they murdered somebody or in this case for people,
- 29:12Speaker 1: they should be charged as well, not only for being
- 29:15Speaker 1: somebody who is an accessory after the fact, but be
- 29:18Speaker 1: charged for being shitty ass parents. The former FBI agent
- 29:24Speaker 1: concluded by saying, as a parent, this situation is difficult
- 29:28Speaker 1: because you love your son, you support your son, but
- 29:31Speaker 1: it's hard to do that when they are accused of
- 29:34Speaker 1: a quadruple homicide. There's no doubt I can't even imagine
- 29:37Speaker 1: how the parents feel. Right now, you got your son
- 29:40Speaker 1: who is accused of these heinous crimes. Everybody in the
- 29:43Speaker 1: country looking sideways at you, and I'm sure there's people
- 29:47Speaker 1: camping out, chopping at the bit to get into that
- 29:50Speaker 1: gated community. There's gonna be professional protesters, wait and see,
- 29:56Speaker 1: it's gonna turn into quite a scene and all of
- 29:59Speaker 1: the unfortunately they're gonna be stuck with dealing with that
- 30:02Speaker 1: as well. Like we saw down once again with Gabby
- 30:05Speaker 1: Petito and the way people started camping out in front
- 30:09Speaker 1: of the laundry's house. And I have no doubt in
- 30:11Speaker 1: my mind that the same exact thing's gonna crack off here.
- 30:15Speaker 1: So we'll have to see and we'll see where it
- 30:18Speaker 1: all goes. But as of now, this is the statement
- 30:21Speaker 1: that the suspect, Brian Koberger's family has put out on
- 30:25Speaker 1: his behalf. All right, folks, that's gonna do it for
