- 0:27Hey everybody good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31OK, next part of holidays, let's talk about uncomfortable
- 0:35relationships and conversations during the holidays.
- 0:39Now we all know we don't want to fake put this out there that
- 0:42this is what's going to happen during the holidays.
- 0:43But we all know we are going to see somebody that we don't
- 0:47necessarily want to see and we are going to end up in a
- 0:51conversation that. Probably is not the best thing
- 0:55for us. We all know that there are those
- 0:57things that we just as families when we go together.
- 1:01Somebody always says something, somebody always does something.
- 1:04And the car ride home consists of, OK, what were the top three
- 1:08stupid things that happened today?
- 1:10Or who said the stupidest thing you heard today?
- 1:13And we all have these parts of our family that we just look at
- 1:17and go, God, why? I just so wish that we didn't
- 1:20have to go through that conversation.
- 1:23So let's talk about navigating these conversations.
- 1:25Let's talk about what it is with these conversations that pushes
- 1:29our buttons. So first of all, you know, back
- 1:32to the old Wayne Dyer adage of no one can push your buttons if
- 1:37you don't have them. It's a very important thing to
- 1:40remember. They're pushing buttons because
- 1:43we have the buttons. If we didn't have the buttons,
- 1:45they couldn't push them so. Just understanding that you're
- 1:49going to try to clear up your your button pushing parts of
- 1:53you, so you're not pushing any buttons, buttons before you go
- 1:56into events. Because if you're the button
- 1:58pusher, stop it. It's not fun.
- 2:00Just go in and say I'm not going to, I'm not going to pick it,
- 2:03anybody. I'm not going to say anything.
- 2:05And if you don't think you're picking, just realize if you've
- 2:08been a part of a few conflicts and you can't find clarity about
- 2:13things, always come back and ask yourself, well, what part did I
- 2:16play in this? It's always an important part of
- 2:18it. Like for me, I don't typically
- 2:21start things, but I always try to close them out.
- 2:25And growing up, I had to really learn how to control that in
- 2:28myself because I'm very good at being very sharp.
- 2:33When I feel like somebody's coming at somebody I love and I
- 2:37will stop in and I will cause uncomfortableness in the room
- 2:42and I can own that. So over the years I have been
- 2:45very cognizant of my training. Mindfulness training has really
- 2:48helped with this, to stay in my own lane and unless I'm asked to
- 2:53come in on something, I don't need to go and rescue everybody.
- 2:56And that was a big thing that I had to learn.
- 2:59Big, big thing. Big thing.
- 3:00And I still have to learn it regularly.
- 3:03And it still happens in my life. And one would think, how could
- 3:06that possibly be? Don't you surround yourself with
- 3:08great people? Yes.
- 3:09But you know, anytime my children have an issue, I am the
- 3:13person that wants to jump in there and I have to let them
- 3:15navigate it. You know, my daughter's married.
- 3:17I She has to navigate it herself and making sure.
- 3:23I'm not. I ask permission.
- 3:25Do you want my help? That's an important thing.
- 3:27Remember, ask those things and and find out for yourself where
- 3:31your role flies into it. Now the next part is of this is
- 3:35that when you are part of an uncomfortable conversation, if
- 3:38you're all sitting at the table and uncomfortable topics are
- 3:41coming up and you feel them, you can feel other people shifting.
- 3:46You can always change the subject.
- 3:48It's amazing how quickly that works when you change the
- 3:51subject and people always say. But how when they're in the
- 3:54middle of a conversation, you can actually just get up and
- 3:58say, you know, what Would anybody like anything else to
- 4:00drink? Does anybody need more gravy?
- 4:02What does anybody need? You're interrupting the pattern.
- 4:07Think about interrupting the patterns.
- 4:08Now I actually have developed over the years with one
- 4:12particular client of mine. We call them the Pattern
- 4:15Interrupt bag. Because she knows she has a very
- 4:18difficult family and basically she has all these little things
- 4:22in this bag that she can pull out anytime if she feels like
- 4:26everybody's getting too antsy or too rude with each other.
- 4:30So there are lots and lots and lots of little things, games,
- 4:36questions that you can. You have out, but one of the
- 4:39greatest ones is setting up if you've ever gone in restaurants.
- 4:43Years ago they used to have Trivial Pursuit cards and cups
- 4:47on the tables. So while you were waiting for
- 4:49your food, you had something to do.
- 4:50This was like pretty standard procedure and it all kind of
- 4:53went away. But Oh my gosh, having those
- 4:57brain bending questions and Trivial Pursuit cards out in
- 5:01stations around the house during the holidays having little tiny
- 5:05games. Out those mind bending games.
- 5:09Oh, those really work, whether they're questions like that or
- 5:13the little physical ones where you can go to.
- 5:15Barnes and Noble has a great section of puzzles and they have
- 5:18these little metal puzzles that lock up and you can't get them
- 5:21done. That tends to keep people
- 5:23occupied for quite some time. It is an excellent idea to have
- 5:28them around because everybody gets involved with it right away
- 5:31and you'd be surprised. It's like having a kids table
- 5:33for adults mentally. So put yourself in the position
- 5:38where you're going to interrupt those conversations before they
- 5:42happen. This is not about saying how do
- 5:45I navigate them once they happen.
- 5:46This is about saying how do I mitigate them before they
- 5:49happen. So work on getting your bag
- 5:52together, making sure you stay mindful, don't participate
- 5:56unless you're asked, and have all those little tools and
- 5:59tricks around to have a very nice holiday where nobody loses
- 6:04it. OK my friends, I'll see you
- 6:06tomorrow. Bye.
