- 1:08Speaker 8: Imagine if I were to tell you Ole Miss is
- 1:11Speaker 8: playing Miami. Where would you think that game was being played?
- 1:17Speaker 6: Where?
- 1:18Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 1:20Speaker 6: Where?
- 1:20Speaker 8: Where would it make sense for those two teams to play.
- 1:23Speaker 9: A bowl game?
- 1:25Speaker 6: I don't know, Jared. Where what?
- 1:27Speaker 8: Probably not Tempe Arizona, Glendale, Arizona or.
- 1:31Speaker 6: In the national semi the National playoff semi final.
- 1:35Speaker 8: Well, I mean especially Ole Miss, all things considered. Uh,
- 1:39Speaker 8: but you know, I'm well, okay, we'll get into it in
- 1:43Speaker 8: a second. Chip Houart Sports Tawk on the Zone eleven
- 1:45Speaker 8: fifty A ninety three point seven FM on this Thursday afternoon.
- 1:49Speaker 8: And I have to say again, traffic flowing very very
- 1:54Speaker 8: nice on Highway six, everyone being very conscientious drivers. Enjoy
- 1:58Speaker 8: it for the next two days because I have a
- 2:00Speaker 8: feeling starting next week that all goes downhill.
- 2:03Speaker 10: Uh.
- 2:04Speaker 8: I'll be Mike Connor, thank you for being with us today. Uh,
- 2:10Speaker 8: loving it keeping me from having to talk to myself
- 2:12Speaker 8: for two hours because as I as I told you,
- 2:15Speaker 8: there's nothing worse than just being in here trying to
- 2:17Speaker 8: fill time for two hours. So we're going to talk
- 2:22Speaker 8: college football playoffs, and like I said, you have we
- 2:27Speaker 8: have the semifinal game tonight. We have another uh the
- 2:29Speaker 8: other semifinal game tomorrow night. Tonight's game features the Miami Hurricanes, which,
- 2:36Speaker 8: for those of us who were at Kyle Field on
- 2:39Speaker 8: December twentieth, that was a stress inducing game that basically
- 2:48Speaker 8: just felt like it went downhill in the last what
- 2:51Speaker 8: five minutes?
- 2:52Speaker 6: Absolutely, yeah, I mean the E and M defense did
- 2:56Speaker 6: everything they needed to give the offense it's a chance
- 3:00Speaker 6: to score a touchdown, and they did not.
- 3:03Speaker 8: They did not.
- 3:05Speaker 6: But credit Miami, you know, on their defense.
- 3:08Speaker 8: No, I mean, and that's kind of the that's kind
- 3:11Speaker 8: of where it's going with this, because you know, you
- 3:14Speaker 8: walk away from that game, you had two very talented teams,
- 3:18Speaker 8: two teams that could contend for a national championship as
- 3:21Speaker 8: long as they obviously keep winning while having a difficult path,
- 3:28Speaker 8: probably at least lined up a little bit better that
- 3:31Speaker 8: you'd be playing Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl versus
- 3:35Speaker 8: having to play Georgia. The stars were lined Yeah, but
- 3:39Speaker 8: it wasn't until we got that Cotton Bowl and we
- 3:42Speaker 8: saw just the curb stomping that Miami did on what
- 3:47Speaker 8: was perceived to be the upper two teams.
- 3:49Speaker 6: I mean, they're they're, they're they're they're playing with their
- 3:52Speaker 6: hair on fire. Yeah, absolutely, and and and they're playing
- 3:56Speaker 6: with house money. Nobody. I mean, I think everybody, myself included,
- 4:01Speaker 6: we're surprised to see their name pop up. You know
- 4:05Speaker 6: when they were doing the the selection show, by thought
- 4:08Speaker 6: that was going to be the Notre Dame, the Notre
- 4:11Speaker 6: Dame slot right uh after, especially what the the the
- 4:16Speaker 6: rankings had been up until that final ranking. But yeah,
- 4:21Speaker 6: they're playing, like I said, lights out defense. Carson Beck
- 4:25Speaker 6: is playing because he's playing good football.
- 4:29Speaker 8: Ever ever since the louis the Louisville game, right right,
- 4:32Speaker 8: he has he has turned things around from what from
- 4:36Speaker 8: those classic Carson Beck multi in intercept games that we
- 4:41Speaker 8: saw at Georgia and we saw you know the last
- 4:44Speaker 8: the early with uh with Miami in their two losses.
- 4:51Speaker 8: But yeah, I mean playing with speed, playing with ferocity.
- 4:55Speaker 8: Ruben Bain is just a terror salop on that defensive line.
- 5:01Speaker 8: And naturally you would think, okay, the heavy hitting matchup
- 5:06Speaker 8: would be Miami against Georgia. And I think most of
- 5:09Speaker 8: us thought Georgia was going to just take care of
- 5:12Speaker 8: business because Ole Miss comes into that game with Pete
- 5:16Speaker 8: Golding in his second game as a head coach. Multiple
- 5:24Speaker 8: coaches who were not who are leaving with Lane to
- 5:28Speaker 8: go to LSU, and players who you are you are thinking,
- 5:34Speaker 8: are probably thinking about going about going going exactly going
- 5:39Speaker 8: to LSU with Lane, and instead we got arguably the
- 5:43Speaker 8: best playoff game we've seen up to this point, except
- 5:46Speaker 8: for the fact that we're going to talk about the
- 5:48Speaker 8: other side of the bracket here in a second. Uh,
- 5:51Speaker 8: there is something extraordinarily entertaining about what happened in the
- 5:53Speaker 8: Rose bulb, but we'll cover that in a minute. Yeah,
- 5:57Speaker 8: but Ole miss basically playing with house money as well,
- 6:00Speaker 8: because no one expected him to be the hearer.
- 6:03Speaker 6: But but I think credit the players on that. Yes,
- 6:06Speaker 6: you know, they have united together as a team as
- 6:09Speaker 6: a team should, and they're they're going to right out
- 6:13Speaker 6: to shock the world. And you know, for me, that's
- 6:17Speaker 6: that's my heart wants Ole miss Oh to win it
- 6:21Speaker 6: all just to do you know. Yes, some of their
- 6:24Speaker 6: nose at Lane Kippen and said, we we did this
- 6:27Speaker 6: even without you.
- 6:29Speaker 8: So I would I would dare say, if you could,
- 6:31Speaker 8: if you could do one of those those heat maps
- 6:34Speaker 8: of the United States, like what is where who in
- 6:38Speaker 8: each state is rooting for whom outside of Indiana, Outside
- 6:42Speaker 8: of Indiana I would and outside of Oregon, I would
- 6:47Speaker 8: dare say, and outside of like extreme South Florida South like,
- 6:52Speaker 8: we're not even yeah, exactly, we're not. We're not even
- 6:54Speaker 8: talking like uh you know, bow bauered And I mean no, no, no, no, no,
- 7:02Speaker 8: they they everyone is pulling for ole Miss Trinidad. Chambliss
- 7:09Speaker 8: played what has to be I mean that you got
- 7:12Speaker 8: to put that on par with like a Vince Young
- 7:15Speaker 8: esque performance.
- 7:18Speaker 6: But this is the problem.
- 7:23Speaker 8: This week, compared to last week, ole Miss is going
- 7:27Speaker 8: to be without several other coaches. This, I mean, this
- 7:32Speaker 8: is ultimately and I know Nick Saban's been banging the
- 7:35Speaker 8: drum on this and and multiple other personalities on television
- 7:38Speaker 8: banging the drum on this. This is where the college
- 7:41Speaker 8: football calendar has to be has to change because this
- 7:45Speaker 8: is absurd. Lane Kiffen deserves all the criticism in the
- 7:51Speaker 8: world for leaving a team that was going into the
- 7:55Speaker 8: playoffs to take a job that would have been there
- 7:57Speaker 8: for him at the end of this run. Yeah, I mean,
- 8:00Speaker 8: disregard the fact, I know you got the early you
- 8:03Speaker 8: got the December signing date, and you got all the
- 8:05Speaker 8: you know, transfer portal stuff opening up. You have a
- 8:08Speaker 8: chance to actually win a national championship with this team,
- 8:12Speaker 8: assuming you stay as head coach. Here's one of the
- 8:14Speaker 8: things I've been thinking about. You really do have to
- 8:17Speaker 8: think about the fact if Lane's there, do they win
- 8:20Speaker 8: those games? Because as good as he is, he also
- 8:23Speaker 8: is sometimes his own worst enemy.
- 8:25Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah, Like I said, I think that's where you
- 8:27Speaker 6: get this team concept, where the players have come together
- 8:30Speaker 6: and said, hey, we're gonna win this. You know, without Lane,
- 8:33Speaker 6: we can shock the world and prove that. You know,
- 8:36Speaker 6: it was more than Lane Kiffen. It was you know,
- 8:39Speaker 6: twenty two guys on the field that you know came
- 8:42Speaker 6: together and played well. But like you said, it's they're
- 8:47Speaker 6: up against a tough you know. Like I said, my
- 8:49Speaker 6: heart's with old miss. I don't want them to win
- 8:52Speaker 6: it all. But my gosh, Miami, like you said, the
- 8:55Speaker 6: way they I mean, that was just a they took
- 8:58Speaker 6: Ohio State to the woodshed. And I don't know how
- 9:01Speaker 6: much of that, how much of a factor that was,
- 9:04Speaker 6: you know, Miami being good or you know, let's talk
- 9:07Speaker 6: about the other the other thing, the almost month long
- 9:11Speaker 6: lay layoff.
- 9:12Speaker 8: Yes, so when we talk about the college football calendar,
- 9:16Speaker 8: that is something that definitely has to be addressed. Especially
- 9:19Speaker 8: I think if Indiana does not win the Rose Bowl,
- 9:23Speaker 8: let's disregard the margin of victory. Let's just say they
- 9:28Speaker 8: don't win, that Alabama ends up winning that. I think
- 9:31Speaker 8: you definitely see the calendar shift because at that point
- 9:33Speaker 8: you now have eight programs all with buys.
- 9:38Speaker 6: They're one and seven in the last last the last
- 9:41Speaker 6: two years.
- 9:41Speaker 8: And I mean, basically those teams had twenty four days
- 9:46Speaker 8: off from their final game. That all they're doing is
- 9:49Speaker 8: practicing against themselves, and it arguably makes it different. You
- 9:53Speaker 8: can get you can obviously get healthy in about a
- 9:56Speaker 8: week or two, but having that length of time off
- 9:57Speaker 8: definitely seems to be detrimental, uh for for for multiple reasons.
- 10:03Speaker 6: And really, who had outside of outside of Texas. Who
- 10:10Speaker 6: in Ohio a state played in the regular season outside
- 10:14Speaker 6: of Michigan? Okay, well, I.
- 10:16Speaker 8: Mean yeah, no, I mean again, Ohio State basically had
- 10:21Speaker 8: had had a cake walk, their one challenging game would
- 10:24Speaker 8: have been Pins would have presumably had been good Pens.
- 10:27Speaker 6: In the state. But James Frank presumably l s U
- 10:31Speaker 6: is going to be exactly.
- 10:33Speaker 8: I mean, and that's and that's I mean for all
- 10:35Speaker 8: to talk about how the SEC is now down just
- 10:39Speaker 8: because of our bowl record, which, oh, by the way,
- 10:43Speaker 8: why that is a terrible metric to utilize to make
- 10:47Speaker 8: a judgment. Yeah, we can talk about there is a
- 10:50Speaker 8: flattening in college football thanks to n I L, thanks
- 10:53Speaker 8: to the transfer portal. I get that and that, and
- 10:56Speaker 8: I mean, honestly, that's great for the score.
- 10:58Speaker 6: I agree. I think it's good for the.
- 10:59Speaker 8: Game ultimately when you actually look at it. Kentucky is
- 11:03Speaker 8: probably the thirteenth best team in the SEC. If you
- 11:06Speaker 8: were to move them over to the ACC, they'd probably
- 11:08Speaker 8: be fourth.
- 11:09Speaker 6: Yeah, you put them in the Big twelve.
- 11:10Speaker 8: They're probably right behind BYU. And it's because they're spending
- 11:14Speaker 8: twenty five million plus dollars on that team, And that
- 11:17Speaker 8: shows you in the SEC, twenty five million dollars still
- 11:20Speaker 8: put you in the bottom quartile of the conference. But
- 11:27Speaker 8: this might. But this Ole Miss team has the potential
- 11:32Speaker 8: to do what Louisville and SMU were able to do
- 11:35Speaker 8: to Miami, which is, if you can get that ball
- 11:38Speaker 8: thrown in less than two seconds, basically you take the
- 11:42Speaker 8: you take Reuben Bayinn's effect away, because that's what he
- 11:47Speaker 8: He needs about three three to four seconds to get
- 11:50Speaker 8: in there to cause the disruption. If you can get
- 11:53Speaker 8: that ball out faster and Trinidad champlains these kids can
- 11:56Speaker 8: do that, then I there is the potential that Miami
- 12:00Speaker 8: is gonna get burned the same way they did against Louisville.
- 12:03Speaker 8: The flip side of that is that team has galvanized
- 12:07Speaker 8: post those two losses and are playing at a much
- 12:10Speaker 8: higher level.
- 12:12Speaker 6: So we saw that in person.
- 12:14Speaker 8: Yeah we did, we did, all right, So let's go
- 12:18Speaker 8: to tomorrow night's game. Oh and by the way, this
- 12:22Speaker 8: is where I get also with kind of the this
- 12:25Speaker 8: whole playoff format. When when you have old Miami and
- 12:32Speaker 8: Ole miss and you can put them in the Mercedes
- 12:38Speaker 8: Bens Dome in Atlanta, Georgia for the Peach Bowl because
- 12:42Speaker 8: regionally that.
- 12:43Speaker 6: Always closer to them. I hadn't thought about that, but yeah,
- 12:45Speaker 6: you're right.
- 12:47Speaker 8: Instead, let's make them travel three fourths across the country
- 12:51Speaker 8: to play in Tempe, Arizona.
- 12:52Speaker 6: All right.
- 12:54Speaker 8: Let's but let us look at tomorrow night's Peach Bowl
- 12:57Speaker 8: because we have, uh, we have a rematch. We have
- 13:00Speaker 8: a rematch of Indiana and Oregon. We have two Big
- 13:03Speaker 8: ten teams, which means, for the third year in a row,
- 13:06Speaker 8: a Big Ten team will be playing the national Championship.
- 13:12Speaker 6: It is tough to beat a team twice in one season.
- 13:16Speaker 8: Well, it's tough to beat the team twice in one season.
- 13:20Speaker 8: But Kurt Signetti, I he he came out with a
- 13:25Speaker 8: quote today saying, I am happy. But man, when you
- 13:29Speaker 8: watch him, you don't watch him on the side. There's
- 13:32Speaker 8: no joy in that man's none whatsoever. At the end
- 13:35Speaker 8: of the at the end of the Rose Bowl, I
- 13:37Speaker 8: mean you took.
- 13:38Speaker 6: Your I mean you're it was a beat down against
- 13:40Speaker 6: you know, the storied Alabama for the whole program, and
- 13:44Speaker 6: he's over there like you just ate a lemon.
- 13:47Speaker 8: Oh man, there was there was probably not. I mean,
- 13:50Speaker 8: there are multiple things that were entertaining about that game.
- 13:53Speaker 8: First and foremost is the fact that, for as stellar
- 13:59Speaker 8: is Alabama, look after the first seventeen minutes of that
- 14:03Speaker 8: game against Oklahoma, this looked like the Alabama team in
- 14:07Speaker 8: the SEC Championship absolutely just could not do anything. He
- 14:10Speaker 8: could not run the ball, could not stop anything. Indiana.
- 14:13Speaker 8: It's not like Indiana was doing anything surprising. They were
- 14:16Speaker 8: incredibly balanced, run pass basically fifty to fifty, not doing
- 14:21Speaker 8: anything out of the realm of ordinary in fact, I
- 14:25Speaker 8: love Signetti's face on that fake punt or on the
- 14:29Speaker 8: attempted fake punt, because it's like, why are you even try?
- 14:32Speaker 8: Like you can't. But the other thing that was entertaining
- 14:37Speaker 8: was just all the camera shots of his face, because
- 14:40Speaker 8: I mean, he just perpetually It's not that he looks angry,
- 14:45Speaker 8: it's that he has a look of focus that would
- 14:51Speaker 8: cut through lead.
- 14:52Speaker 6: And I think that's a credit to or attributed to
- 14:57Speaker 6: him being a the side full of Saban. Yeah, you know,
- 15:02Speaker 6: because if you think about it, you know, Saban's kind
- 15:05Speaker 6: of same. When did you ever see Saban you know, smile?
- 15:09Speaker 6: You know?
- 15:09Speaker 8: During game on, I was about saying, you have to
- 15:12Speaker 8: you have to get him off the sideline. I remember
- 15:15Speaker 8: one of the shows we did, they interviewed, They did
- 15:18Speaker 8: a they did an interview with him in Italy as
- 15:24Speaker 8: part of one of those Alabama group trips, and he's
- 15:29Speaker 8: talking about all the places they had been and there
- 15:33Speaker 8: is absolutely no joy in his voice and no joy
- 15:36Speaker 8: on his face. And all I can think is, brother,
- 15:40Speaker 8: that is some of the best food in the world.
- 15:43Speaker 8: And more importantly, you're in one of the oldest places
- 15:46Speaker 8: in the world. There is so much beauty and all
- 15:49Speaker 8: all you can think about is I want to be
- 15:50Speaker 8: back in Tuscaloosa watching game film anyway. But yeah, Signette's
- 15:57Speaker 8: from the SABAN.
- 15:59Speaker 9: Four.
- 16:00Speaker 6: All four FINALSS coaches are.
- 16:02Speaker 8: From the same coach. And that's also why the game
- 16:06Speaker 8: between Indiana and organ is so compelling because as much
- 16:09Speaker 8: as you have the focus of Signetti with that team,
- 16:14Speaker 8: Dan Lanning, you know, he's been thinking nothing else except
- 16:18Speaker 8: about this rematch.
- 16:20Speaker 6: Because he has a revenge.
- 16:22Speaker 8: He has a competitive streak yep that I would rivee
- 16:26Speaker 8: that probably rivals just about any coach in college and
- 16:29Speaker 8: potentially even the pros. What's crazy is when you look
- 16:33Speaker 8: at these two teams or again, I believe I saw
- 16:38Speaker 8: the stat today with a four and five star talent
- 16:43Speaker 8: has twenty four or twenty six four or five stars
- 16:46Speaker 8: on the roster. Okay, Indiana has eight. Yeah, but if
- 16:52Speaker 8: you look at what Indiana has been able to do,
- 16:56Speaker 8: it it's very reminiscent of what Arcie Slocum did with
- 16:59Speaker 8: A and M in the late eighties and early nineties.
- 17:02Speaker 6: Taking for the former TCU coach that Gary Patter, Yeah,
- 17:06Speaker 6: Patter Patter Patterson. You know, he took he took two
- 17:09Speaker 6: and three star players and made him play like four
- 17:11Speaker 6: and five stars. So I think Signetti's kind of doing
- 17:14Speaker 6: the same thing, same thing.
- 17:16Speaker 8: Because the difference between last year and this year. Last year,
- 17:19Speaker 8: Indiana was the surprise, and a lot of that was
- 17:21Speaker 8: built on the fact that Signetti came from JMU and
- 17:24Speaker 8: brought a number of those JMU players. This year, you
- 17:28Speaker 8: don't have that. But what's what's remarkable when you look
- 17:32Speaker 8: at the early winners of this year's transfer portal, it's Indiana.
- 17:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 17:38Speaker 8: They're picking up, Yeah, they're picking up talent. And you
- 17:40Speaker 8: know it's not just.
- 17:42Speaker 6: Like they do with Mendoza. Yeah, I mean yeah, I
- 17:44Speaker 6: mean that.
- 17:46Speaker 8: For those who don't know, Mendoza was a quarterback at
- 17:51Speaker 8: Columbus High in basically Greater Miami, Florida. He went. He
- 17:57Speaker 8: was playing quarterback for the high the same high school
- 17:59Speaker 8: Marrio Cristobal went to. This guy was in Mario Crysta
- 18:03Speaker 8: Ball's backyard. He's also Cuban, just like Mario Cristobal. Why
- 18:08Speaker 8: is it he exactly, it's the it's it is an
- 18:12Speaker 8: evaluation of talent, and and I get it. Carson Beck
- 18:16Speaker 8: was the sexy pick, I mean, and they paid him well.
- 18:21Speaker 8: He brought his Lamborghinis which got stolen out of his
- 18:24Speaker 8: garage and I can't remember if they got returned or not.
- 18:27Speaker 8: But it's kind of interesting to think about the fact,
- 18:30Speaker 8: what what would Miami be this year if you had
- 18:34Speaker 8: Fernando Mendoza on that squad, And also would Fernando have
- 18:39Speaker 8: had the success this year with a Miami with a
- 18:42Speaker 8: Mario Crysta ball versus a Kurtzig Nation. That's that's just kind.
- 18:45Speaker 6: Of like like like like Dandy Don said, if if if,
- 18:50Speaker 6: it's just it's.
- 18:50Speaker 8: Just interesting to I mean that, you know again, but
- 18:53Speaker 8: you know, Mendoza uh was not highly regarded coming out
- 18:57Speaker 8: of high school. Was was uh from a D two school.
- 19:02Speaker 8: There is something to be said about talent evaluation. And
- 19:05Speaker 8: I transition this over to A and M as well,
- 19:07Speaker 8: because that is one of the benefits you have with
- 19:14Speaker 8: this program that we're not star chasing like the previous
- 19:20Speaker 8: coaching staff. We are finding players at value.
- 19:24Speaker 6: I mean.
- 19:26Speaker 8: The fact that Casey Concepts, me On and Mario Kraver
- 19:32Speaker 8: basically didn't have near the stats at their previous two
- 19:39Speaker 8: stops as they did this year, and it's because they
- 19:41Speaker 8: were undervalued. You bring them in here, you put them
- 19:43Speaker 8: in the right program, everything works together. That is why
- 19:46Speaker 8: Indiana is this potential juggernaut, which I don't know if
- 19:52Speaker 8: after tomorrow night, if they win, does the tide kind
- 19:56Speaker 8: of turn that now they are seen as the villain.
- 20:00Speaker 8: I still believe if Miami wins tonight and Indiana wins tomorrow, Indie,
- 20:04Speaker 8: Indiana is still going to be the uh, the popular
- 20:08Speaker 8: pick because there I think there's just something about going
- 20:11Speaker 8: back to hating the U.
- 20:13Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah. And then you got to take the fact
- 20:15Speaker 6: that Oregon's got to travel across the country, you know,
- 20:19Speaker 6: from you know from from the west coast all the
- 20:22Speaker 6: way to.
- 20:22Speaker 8: The east, which and listening listening to some of the
- 20:26Speaker 8: broadcasters who talk about that, that does not sound like
- 20:29Speaker 8: a fun trip because there there is no direct flight
- 20:31Speaker 8: from anywhere. Basically the only direct flight you have is
- 20:34Speaker 8: Salt Lake into Eugene, Oregon. Otherwise you are making two
- 20:38Speaker 8: or three connections and or potentially having to drive two
- 20:42Speaker 8: hours depending on where you go in. So anyway, UH,
- 20:48Speaker 8: give me your predictions on both of the semi final games.
- 20:52Speaker 6: Well, like I said, I think I think we're in agreement.
- 20:54Speaker 6: I think, uh as much as I want to see
- 20:56Speaker 6: Ole miss Uh, you know win for you know, the players.
- 21:02Speaker 6: After all that's happened with Kiffin, I think Miami's clearly
- 21:05Speaker 6: the you know, like I said, they're playing with their
- 21:07Speaker 6: hair on fire.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Uh.
- 21:09Speaker 6: You know, Crystal Ball is a great coach. Beck Is
- 21:13Speaker 6: is playing like as advertised. We're getting the good Carson Beck,
- 21:18Speaker 6: not the bad Carson Beck. So I think I think
- 21:20Speaker 6: it's gonna be Miami tonight. Uh and then tomorrow.
- 21:24Speaker 11: Uh.
- 21:25Speaker 6: Let's see, we got three and a half. Indiana's favored
- 21:29Speaker 6: Vegas usually gets it right nine times out of ten,
- 21:33Speaker 6: and so I also want my good friend Steve Fullheart
- 21:36Speaker 6: to be a happy guy. So I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 21:39Speaker 6: pick Indiana tomorrow night.
- 21:41Speaker 8: Let let's and talking about the lines. Let's talk about
- 21:44Speaker 8: the over under, especially on tonight's game. Okay, yeah, over
- 21:47Speaker 8: under is fifty two and a half.
- 21:49Speaker 6: I'm taking the I'm taking the under on the.
- 21:50Speaker 8: You're taking you're taking the under on that. Okay, So
- 21:53Speaker 8: we potential for some scoring but definitely not high scoring. Yeah, okay, interesting.
- 21:59Speaker 8: Yeah for me, it's it's tough, Like I can see
- 22:04Speaker 8: both sides of that coin. I can see this being
- 22:07Speaker 8: a good defensive battle between Miami and Ole Miss with
- 22:11Speaker 8: Miami scoring being able to score more. But at the
- 22:14Speaker 8: same time, I just I think back to that Sugar
- 22:17Speaker 8: Bowl and how Ole Miss was just able to turn
- 22:20Speaker 8: it on in the in the in the third and
- 22:21Speaker 8: the fourth quarter.
- 22:24Speaker 6: But again, I think it's like, I think it's like
- 22:27Speaker 6: the Final four in basketball. To me, the best games
- 22:32Speaker 6: are the semi final games. Yes, way better than the
- 22:35Speaker 6: national championship game. So I think these are going to
- 22:37Speaker 6: be in Uh. There was a sign on our locker
- 22:41Speaker 6: room in high school that said defense wins championships. Who's
- 22:45Speaker 6: got the better Who's And so I think this is
- 22:48Speaker 6: gonna turn You've got really good, two good defenses coming
- 22:50Speaker 6: together against with Old Miss and Bamy, and I think
- 22:53Speaker 6: it's gonna be a low scoring game.
- 22:54Speaker 8: Okay, Tomorrow night's game Indiana Oregon.
- 22:59Speaker 6: Again, and I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go with Indiana
- 23:04Speaker 6: forty and a half. I think I think that I
- 23:07Speaker 6: would take the over on that one.
- 23:09Speaker 8: You would, so you would take the over. I'm I'm
- 23:10Speaker 8: almost tempted to take the under.
- 23:13Speaker 6: So you and I are You and I.
- 23:14Speaker 8: Are kind of Yeah, I think different both. I think tomorrow.
- 23:16Speaker 8: I think tomorrow is really the defensive chess match between
- 23:20Speaker 8: those two teams, and and they make it difficult. I
- 23:23Speaker 8: think Indiana makes it tougher for Oregon to score than
- 23:27Speaker 8: it does for Oregon to make for Indiana to score. Ultimately,
- 23:32Speaker 8: I want to be wrong. I just want two good games.
- 23:35Speaker 6: I mean, watching what what Indiana did to Alabama and
- 23:39Speaker 6: then you know what you know Oregon did in in
- 23:42Speaker 6: their game. I think, yeah, it's gonna be.
- 23:43Speaker 8: I think it's I think I mean the pot scoring.
- 23:46Speaker 8: I just again, I want two great games.
- 23:48Speaker 6: And then that's all I care about is just to
- 23:51Speaker 6: entertain much. You know, the those four those four quarterfinal
- 23:57Speaker 6: games outside of you know, the old this Georgia game.
- 24:01Speaker 6: They were they were snooze fins.
- 24:03Speaker 8: They were they were.
- 24:05Speaker 6: All right.

- 28:00Speaker 13: Legend, dow legend, k.
- 28:18Speaker 8: Now, legend, dude, do you remember what you were doing
- 28:21Speaker 8: in nineteen ninety five?
- 28:23Speaker 6: Nineteen ninety five, I was living in Tulsa, Oklahoma, working
- 28:28Speaker 6: up there, and that was about yeah, thirty years ago.
- 28:34Speaker 6: So yeah, that's where I was Tulsa, Oklahoma. I was
- 28:36Speaker 6: doing a foreign missionary work up there.
- 28:38Speaker 8: Okay, speaking of Oklahoma, did you see Jason Witten is
- 28:46Speaker 8: taking the tight end coaching position at O year.
- 28:50Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, very interesting, very interesting.
- 28:55Speaker 8: He was at Liberty it's private school and not university
- 29:00Speaker 8: obviously as a head coach, but yeah, taking over tight
- 29:03Speaker 8: end coaching duties and owe you.
- 29:06Speaker 6: So he was a good one for the Cowboy.
- 29:09Speaker 8: He was an exceptional one for the Cowboys. I mean,
- 29:12Speaker 8: I know, he kind of he had a really rough
- 29:15Speaker 8: go in the broadcast booth, which, by the way, I
- 29:17Speaker 8: make I pass no judgment on that other than Tom
- 29:19Speaker 8: Brady because he's overpaid, because that is a it is
- 29:22Speaker 8: it is difficult to do it just about any level.
- 29:24Speaker 8: But I'm glad to see ye that he's moving with
- 29:27Speaker 8: the ranks because, uh, the tight I mean you think
- 29:32Speaker 8: think about the the evolution of the tight end position
- 29:36Speaker 8: in football, you know, from just the just being able
- 29:41Speaker 8: to be an effective blocker, maybe catching the occasional out route,
- 29:45Speaker 8: to now being such an integral part of how offense,
- 29:49Speaker 8: how you open up an offense.
- 29:50Speaker 6: I always say good things happen when you throw to
- 29:53Speaker 6: the tight end. Always say that.
- 29:56Speaker 8: Ye all right, Chip Howard, Sports Talk the Zone eleven
- 29:59Speaker 8: fifty eight ninety three point seven FM, Mike Connor, Jared Hicks.
- 30:04Speaker 8: Our man jet on the board is we bring you
- 30:06Speaker 8: into the final segment as we will be wrapping up
- 30:11Speaker 8: at fifteen before the top of the hour because we
- 30:13Speaker 8: got to make way for Aggie Women's a basketball pre game,
- 30:18Speaker 8: which you can listen to here on the Zone, and
- 30:20Speaker 8: so I thought we'd spend this last segment kind of
- 30:23Speaker 8: kind of merging our two discussions today. The NFL in
- 30:28Speaker 8: college because obviously, now that the NFL regular season is over,
- 30:35Speaker 8: we now know the draft order, and in addition to
- 30:40Speaker 8: the transfer portal being open, you are now getting players
- 30:44Speaker 8: who are deciding whether they are going to stay because
- 30:48Speaker 8: chances are they can make more money staying in college
- 30:51Speaker 8: than they can rolling the dice on their rookie NFL contract,
- 30:56Speaker 8: depending on if they've got eligibility left or if they're
- 31:00Speaker 8: going to go ahead and take advantage of the market,
- 31:03Speaker 8: because this year, much like last year, is a very
- 31:08Speaker 8: very weak quarterback.
- 31:10Speaker 6: Outside of the one. Outside of the one.
- 31:14Speaker 8: Yeah, number one pick goes to the currently coach lists
- 31:20Speaker 8: Las Vegas Raiders, which, by the way, when you were
- 31:23Speaker 8: watching them towards the end of the season, they they
- 31:25Speaker 8: really put forth no effort to I think they were
- 31:28Speaker 8: gunning for that they imly believed they were, and ah,
- 31:35Speaker 8: thank you. Oh so Chip, Chip steered us wrong. So
- 31:41Speaker 8: Texas and m women's basketball is actually going to be
- 31:45Speaker 8: on WTAW on our sister station, WTAW sixteen twenty. And
- 31:49Speaker 8: then uh, the Westwood one broadcast of the college football
- 31:52Speaker 8: Playoff semi finals will be here on the zone so
- 31:55Speaker 8: you can listen to Miami versus Ole miss here news. Yes,
- 32:00Speaker 8: breaking news. I should have told you we had this
- 32:04Speaker 8: founder ready, but thank you to Daniel for bringing that
- 32:07Speaker 8: in anyway. So, by all accounts, Las Vegas, who had
- 32:13Speaker 8: Gino Smith as our quarterback, is going to go after
- 32:20Speaker 8: Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman winning quarterback out of Indiana.
- 32:22Speaker 6: No surprise, no surprise there. Uh.
- 32:25Speaker 8: And he has been discussed, uh for the majority of
- 32:28Speaker 8: the back half of the season as being a very
- 32:31Speaker 8: NFL esque quarterback.
- 32:33Speaker 6: You watch him play, he's he's got all the skills.
- 32:36Speaker 8: Yeah, height, size, pocket pocket, a work pocket presence, and
- 32:41Speaker 8: so he will be going there by all accounts. Now, again,
- 32:46Speaker 8: this is the Raiders, and you never know what exactly
- 32:49Speaker 8: they're going to do, but I do believe, uh, since
- 32:53Speaker 8: Tom Brady is part of the the brain trust there
- 32:56Speaker 8: right now, they will they will be picking a quarterback
- 32:58Speaker 8: to start off. Then you have the New York Jets,
- 33:01Speaker 8: which you know when Aaron when Aaron Glenn got announced
- 33:06Speaker 8: as head coach.
- 33:06Speaker 6: I really.
- 33:09Speaker 8: That one concerned me because the Woody Johnson, the Johnson
- 33:13Speaker 8: family has run this organization about six ways from Sunday,
- 33:18Speaker 8: and none of them are in the right direction. They
- 33:22Speaker 8: will probably be going after a quarterback from Dante More
- 33:27Speaker 8: who will be playing knife for Oregon. I mean, that
- 33:32Speaker 8: is a franchise that has a very talented defense. But
- 33:37Speaker 8: in case you didn't see the statistic this year, the
- 33:43Speaker 8: New York Jets had zero interceptions on the season since
- 33:49Speaker 8: they started keeping track of that in nineteen seventy two,
- 33:53Speaker 8: no team has gone an entire season without uninterception.
- 33:57Speaker 6: Well, I did not know that.
- 33:58Speaker 8: Yeah, so hopefully, I don't know if it's a matter
- 34:04Speaker 8: of if Aaron either takes overplay calling duties on defense
- 34:09Speaker 8: and kind of reassigns some of the organizational structure to
- 34:12Speaker 8: someone else or vice versa, but definitely has to do
- 34:15Speaker 8: something to get that on track. Then as you start
- 34:20Speaker 8: progressing between the Cardinals, the Titans, the Giants, You're you're
- 34:25Speaker 8: gonna start seeing some some player the Commanders, You're gonna
- 34:29Speaker 8: start seeing players that we've seen here in the college
- 34:31Speaker 8: football playoff. Francis Magoa from Miami, Rvel Reese linebacker from
- 34:39Speaker 8: Ohio State, Carnell Tate, very talented wide receiver from Ohio State.
- 34:44Speaker 8: And then the Commanders are gonna look at David Bailey,
- 34:48Speaker 8: who was one of those two anchors on the Texas
- 34:51Speaker 8: Tech defense. And then as you again, as you kind
- 34:55Speaker 8: of progress on and you start making your way down
- 34:59Speaker 8: to number twenty, let's talk about in the Chicago, let's
- 35:05Speaker 8: talk about Le's talk about her twelve. Okay, her beloved
- 35:08Speaker 8: Dallas Cowboys, beloved Dallas Cowboys.
- 35:11Speaker 6: Definitely get somebody to take Michael Parson's place.
- 35:15Speaker 8: Well, I mean, yeah, I mean you need to address
- 35:18Speaker 8: the defensive side the ball.
- 35:19Speaker 6: That was where they really suffered this year because I mean,
- 35:22Speaker 6: Dak had one of his best years offensively, but you know,
- 35:25Speaker 6: the defense just let him down so many times.
- 35:28Speaker 8: Now, what I will say is when you were watch
- 35:29Speaker 8: when you watched the Cowboys, especially as the season progressed,
- 35:32Speaker 8: it seemed like the defense was finally starting to get
- 35:35Speaker 8: their act together, but a lot of that was against
- 35:39Speaker 8: lower tiers teams in the NFL. And then just inexplicitly
- 35:45Speaker 8: but yeah, Sunny Styles, the linebacker from Ohio State, if
- 35:48Speaker 8: this ends up, holding, will be a very necessary addition
- 35:52Speaker 8: to the Cowboys defense.
- 35:53Speaker 6: All right.
- 35:54Speaker 8: So as we get to number twenty in the Chicago Bears,
- 35:56Speaker 8: this is where we see a very familiar name, very
- 36:00Speaker 8: familiar name had an outstanding season for Texas A and
- 36:03Speaker 8: m cash is how if this holds and if this
- 36:08Speaker 8: proves to be true and we've got a lot of
- 36:10Speaker 8: time until the draft come May, but that Chicago Bears
- 36:15Speaker 8: defense is gonna be is stout and could become very stout, yes,
- 36:22Speaker 8: because he brings he brings a speed and a wrecking ball.
- 36:28Speaker 8: Style of defense that could really uh aid in making
- 36:34Speaker 8: that what I mean, the Bears were for one week
- 36:38Speaker 8: the number one team in the NFC. They looked like
- 36:41Speaker 8: they were on their way to to to being able
- 36:45Speaker 8: to have home field advantage in the playoffs, and that
- 36:48Speaker 8: would And Caleb Williams, you know, for for all the
- 36:52Speaker 8: criticisms he's had on under previous coaches, i e. The
- 36:57Speaker 8: now former defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, Matt ever Flew,
- 37:01Speaker 8: Ben Johnson seems to have kind of cracked the code
- 37:03Speaker 8: to make him basically the best quarterback the Chicago Bears
- 37:07Speaker 8: have ever had. Right, But yeah, you pair that, you
- 37:11Speaker 8: pair that with a defense that has cash? Is how
- 37:14Speaker 8: on it that that could be something special?
- 37:19Speaker 6: And then and then number twenty one?
- 37:21Speaker 8: Yeah Cowboys, Steelers, Steelers Sorry Casey familiar name, Another familiar name,
- 37:29Speaker 8: Casey Concepcion, who, by the way, was that the women's
- 37:33Speaker 8: basketball game? Yes, his girlfriend plays on the team, was
- 37:37Speaker 8: there for the whole game? Uh, good for him. Yeah,
- 37:41Speaker 8: that's a smart young man, incredibly friendly young young man.
- 37:44Speaker 8: My daughters and their friends walked up he he was
- 37:48Speaker 8: he was talking with everyone who came up to him,
- 37:50Speaker 8: taking pictures super super nice young man, incredibly talented, and
- 37:57Speaker 8: would be a very welcomed addition to the Pittsburgh offense
- 38:01Speaker 8: because that wide receiver room needs some help. DK Metcalf,
- 38:05Speaker 8: for all his size and fierce appearance, has not been
- 38:11Speaker 8: the answer in Pittsburgh. So I'm looking forward to to
- 38:15Speaker 8: seeing what he can do on Sundays. I just also
- 38:17Speaker 8: hope that he's going to have a quarterback who can
- 38:21Speaker 8: get him the ball.
- 38:22Speaker 6: That's going to be a big Although he's got he's
- 38:24Speaker 6: type of player. You get the ball in his zip code,
- 38:27Speaker 6: he'll go get it.
- 38:28Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean and and that's uh, that's going to
- 38:33Speaker 8: be one of those one of the one of those
- 38:38Speaker 8: intangibles that he can bring to it to an offense,
- 38:42Speaker 8: especially with his size and his speed. All Right, as
- 38:47Speaker 8: we start looking at at the tail end of the
- 38:51Speaker 8: potential draft, you're seeing a lot of names from the SEC,
- 38:58Speaker 8: especially on the defensive side of the ball. Again, this
- 39:01Speaker 8: is not a this is not a good offensive year
- 39:05Speaker 8: from a quarterback position. You don't, I don't there's I
- 39:08Speaker 8: don't believe there's a running back that predicted to go
- 39:11Speaker 8: in the first round. I mean, Casey, I believe he's
