The Epstein Files Expose How Prematurely DOJ Tried to Close the Case (Part 1) (10/23/26) · The Vault: The Epstein Files

Speaker 1: What's up everyone and welcome to another episode of the
• 0:03
Speaker 1: Epstein Chronicles. There is a very particular kind of confidence
• 0:07
Speaker 1: that comes out of DC when the people in charge
• 0:11
Speaker 1: think that a story is dead. You know the tone.
• 0:14
Speaker 1: Everything has been reviewed. Every avenue has been exhausted. Every
• 0:19
Speaker 1: lead has been chased. Listen, the professionals have looked at it.
• 0:24
Speaker 1: The experts have waited. And the grown-ups in the room
• 0:27
Speaker 1: have spoken and now the rest of us are supposed
• 0:30
Speaker 1: to just shut the hell up and move along. And
• 0:33
Speaker 1: when the people refuse to do that, when they keep
• 0:35
Speaker 1: asking questions, when they keep pointing out the holes in
• 0:38
Speaker 1: the story, suddenly the questions become the problem. Not the
• 0:42
Speaker 1: missing answers or the contradictions. Not the records nobody wants
• 0:46
Speaker 1: to talk about. The questions. Then come the labels. Conspiracy theory. Hoax. Distraction.
• 0:54
Speaker 1: Political theater. Anything that allows people holding the information to
• 0:58
Speaker 1: avoid explaining why they are so desperate for everyone else
• 1:02
Speaker 1: to stop looking at it. And look, the strategy, it
• 1:05
Speaker 1: works surprisingly well, at least for a while. Because most
• 1:08
Speaker 1: scandals eventually lose oxygen, the headlines move on, the cameras disappear,
• 1:13
Speaker 1: and people get tired. Politicians find something new to scream about,
• 1:17
Speaker 1: and the bureaucracy goes back to doing what the bureaucracy
• 1:20
Speaker 1: does best, waiting out the public. Because Jeffrey Epstein was
• 1:25
Speaker 1: supposed to go the same way. Close the book, file
• 1:28
Speaker 1: the paperwork, issue the statement, tell everybody there's nothing left
• 1:32
Speaker 1: to see. The only problem with declaring a case finished
• 1:36
Speaker 1: is that you'd better be damn sure nobody ever gets
• 1:38
Speaker 1: a look inside that box. Because once that box opens,
• 1:42
Speaker 1: you no longer control the story. And once people start
• 1:45
Speaker 1: comparing what they were told with what was actually sitting
• 1:48
Speaker 1: in those files, all that confidence starts looking a little different.
• 1:52
Speaker 1: Suddenly the certainty sounds less like certainty. The dismissal sounds
• 1:57
Speaker 1: less like judgment. And the people who were laughing at
• 2:00
Speaker 1: everyone else start looking awfully nervous about what happens next.
• 2:05
Speaker 1: Because sometimes the door is closed because there's nothing behind it.
• 2:09
Speaker 1: And sometimes somebody closes it because they really, really do
• 2:14
Speaker 1: not want you walking through it. About a year ago,
• 2:18
Speaker 1: the Department of Justice and the FBI tried to bury
• 2:20
Speaker 1: the Epstein question under an unsigned memo and a tone
• 2:24
Speaker 1: of bureaucratic finality. The July 2025 memo said the government's
• 2:29
Speaker 1: review had found no incriminating client list, no credible evidence
• 2:33
Speaker 1: that Epstein blackmailed prominent people, and no evidence that could
• 2:36
Speaker 1: predicate an investigation of uncharged third parties. It then delivered
• 2:41
Speaker 1: the line the administration plainly wanted everyone to swallow whole.
• 2:45
Speaker 1: No further disclosure was warranted. That wasn't a cautious statement
• 2:50
Speaker 1: about what prosecutors could prove beyond a reasonable doubt at
• 2:53
Speaker 1: that moment. It was a sweeping institutional shrug dressed up
• 2:57
Speaker 1: as investigative certainty. The message was that the professionals had
• 3:01
Speaker 1: checked the closets, looked under the beds, kicked every door,
• 3:04
Speaker 1: followed every lead, and reached the edge of the map.
• 3:08
Speaker 1: Anyone still asking questions could therefore be dismissed as a crank,
• 3:12
Speaker 1: a partisan, a conspiracy merchant, or one of the supposedly
• 3:16
Speaker 1: gullible people refusing to accept the government's immaculate conclusion. The
• 3:21
Speaker 1: administration did not merely ask for patience while investigators worked.
• 3:25
Speaker 1: It told the country that meaningful work was basically finished.
• 3:29
Speaker 1: Then Congress forced the files out, and that carefully constructed error,
• 3:33
Speaker 1: a finality, lasted about as well as wet cardboard. The
• 3:37
Speaker 1: problem was no longer that the critics distrusted the government's conclusion.
• 3:41
Speaker 1: The problem was that the government's own records began producing fresh,
• 3:45
Speaker 1: investigative activity. Now, Donald Trump made the political sales pitch
• 3:49
Speaker 1: even cruder by repeatedly calling the Epstein controversy a hoax
• 3:53
Speaker 1: and lashing out at supporters who refused to drop it.
• 3:58
Speaker 1: In July of 2025, he complained about stupid Republicans and
• 4:01
Speaker 1: weaklings who kept pressing the issue, as though curiosity about
• 4:05
Speaker 1: a convicted sex traffickers network had become some sort of
• 4:08
Speaker 1: character defect. Now, that was useful rhetoric if the goal
• 4:12
Speaker 1: was to turn an evidentiary dispute into a loyalty test.
• 4:16
Speaker 1: It was considerably less useful once lawmakers from both parties
• 4:20
Speaker 1: decided they wanted the documents anyway. The White House could
• 4:24
Speaker 1: mock people asking questions, but that mockery does not authenticate
• 4:28
Speaker 1: an FBI file, explain a financial transfer, reconcile conflicting testimony,
• 4:34
Speaker 1: or a closed estate criminal investigation. It also does not
• 4:37
Speaker 1: change the rather inconvenient fact that the administration's own Justice
• 4:41
Speaker 1: Department had custody of millions of pages it had not
• 4:44
Speaker 1: placed before the public. Calling the controversy a hoax while
• 4:48
Speaker 1: sitting on a warehouse-sized documentary record was always a strange
• 4:52
Speaker 1: way to prove that there was nothing there. It was
• 4:54
Speaker 1: like insisting a library contained no useful books while keeping
• 4:58
Speaker 1: the doors locked and ridiculing anyone who asked for a card. Now,
• 5:02
Speaker 1: the insult worked as long as nobody compelled the librarian
• 5:05
Speaker 1: to hand over the shelves. Congress eventually did exactly that,
• 5:10
Speaker 1: and the administration's easy certainty immediately became much harder to sell.
• 5:16
Speaker 1: The Epstein-Files Transparency Act was not the product of some
• 5:19
Speaker 1: fringe internet campaign that wandered into federal law by accident.
• 5:24
  Speaker 1: The House passed H.R. 4405 on November 18, 2025, by
• 5:29
Speaker 1: a vote of 427 to 1. The Senate approved it
• 5:33
Speaker 1: by unanimous consent the next day, and Trump signed it
• 5:35
Speaker 1: into law on November 19. That vote was a congressional
• 5:40
Speaker 1: rebuke to the notion that the Justice Department should remain
• 5:43
Speaker 1: the sole judge of whether its Epstein files were worth seeing.
• 5:47
Speaker 1: The statute ordered the Attorney General to make the covered,
• 5:51
Speaker 1: unclassified records publicly available in searchable and downloadable form within
• 5:56
Speaker 1: 30 days. It reached records involving Epstein and Maxwell, travel,
• 6:01
Speaker 1: named individuals and entities, immunity and plea agreements, charging decisions,
• 6:06
Speaker 1: internal communications, and other investigative material. Congress didn't draft a
• 6:10
Speaker 1: federal law because it was satisfied with the July Memo's
• 6:13
Speaker 1: Trust Us summary. It drafted the law because Trust Us
• 6:17
Speaker 1: had already collapsed. 427 House members did not vote to
• 6:22
Speaker 1: release a mythical file cabinet that everyone agreed was empty.
• 6:26
Speaker 1: They voted to take the government's word out of the
• 6:28
Speaker 1: equation and force the underlying record into the daylight. And
• 6:33
Speaker 1: the scale of what emerged made the earlier pose of
• 6:35
Speaker 1: tidy finality look even more absurd. On July 30, 2026,
• 6:39
Speaker 1: Todd Blanch announced that the Justice Department was releasing more
• 6:44
Speaker 1: than 3 million additional pages, along with more than 2,000
• 6:48
Speaker 1: videos and roughly 180,000 images. The department said the combined production,
• 6:53
Speaker 1: under the law, amounted to nearly 3.5 million pages. It
• 6:57
Speaker 1: also acknowledged that its collection effort had identified more than
• 7:00
Speaker 1: 6 million pages as potentially responsive before duplication, relevance review,
• 7:07
Speaker 1: privilege decisions, and redactions. That is a remarkable amount of
• 7:11
Speaker 1: paper to sit behind the public message that there was
• 7:14
Speaker 1: essentially nothing left worth pursuing. No responsible person should pretend
• 7:19
Speaker 1: that millions of pages equal millions of crimes because they don't.
• 7:23
Speaker 1: But no responsible official should pretend that a corpus that
• 7:26
Speaker 1: large can be reduced to a slogan and a shrug either.
• 7:31
Speaker 1: The release created something the July Memo had tried to prevent.
• 7:35
Speaker 1: Thousands of people outside DOJ could compare names, dates, emails, payments, interviews, calendars,
• 7:42
Speaker 1: investigative reports, and institutional decisions against government claims. Once that happened,
• 7:49
Speaker 1: the official narrative no longer enjoyed a monopoly on interpretation,
• 7:53
Speaker 1: and almost immediately, jurisdictions that had not been impressed by
• 7:57
Speaker 1: Washington's declaration of exhaustion started finding work to do. And
• 8:02
Speaker 1: I think that New Mexico is the cleanest example because
• 8:05
Speaker 1: the state's Attorney General did not merely complain about the
• 8:07
Speaker 1: federal handling of Epstein. He reopened a criminal investigation. On
• 8:12
Speaker 1: February 19, 2026, Attorney General Raul Torres ordered the New
• 8:17
Speaker 1: Mexico Department of Justice to reopen its investigation into alleged
• 8:21
Speaker 1: illegal activity at Zorro Ranch. His office said previously sealed
• 8:26
Speaker 1: FBI material made public through the federal releases warranted further examination.
• 8:31
Speaker 1: That sentence alone should be framed and hung next to
• 8:34
Speaker 1: the July 2025 memo. The FBI and DOJ had told
• 8:38
Speaker 1: the country they had not uncovered evidence that could predicate
• 8:41
Speaker 1: an investigation of uncharged third parties. Yet newly public FBI
• 8:46
Speaker 1: material helped persuade a state attorney general to review a
• 8:49
Speaker 1: criminal case. No amount of semantic tap dancing can make
• 8:53
Speaker 1: those two things sit comfortably together. Torres was not reacting
• 8:57
Speaker 1: to an anonymous message board or a viral video. he
• 9:00
Speaker 1: was reacting to material originating inside the federal investigative system itself.
• 9:06
Speaker 1: The supposed dead end in Washington had become a live
• 9:08
Speaker 1: investigative lead in Santa Fe. Apparently the road ended only
• 9:12
Speaker 1: if one accepted the federal government's decision to stop driving.
• 9:18
Speaker 1: And the history of the New Mexico investigation makes the
• 9:20
Speaker 1: contradiction worse. Not better. Torres' office said earlier state investigations
• 9:25
Speaker 1: had been closed in 2019. after the U.S. Attorney's Office
• 9:29
Speaker 1: for the Southern District of New York asked New Mexico
• 9:33
Speaker 1: to stand down to avoid interfering with the federal case.
• 9:37
Speaker 1: New Mexico complied. The federal case moved forward. Epstein died,
• 9:41
Speaker 1: Maxwell was prosecuted, and the years rolled on. Then the
• 9:45
Speaker 1: state learned from later documents that material concerning Zorro Ranch
• 9:49
Speaker 1: remained substantial enough to justify reopening what it had shelved
• 9:53
Speaker 1: at federal request. And I think that sequence is almost
• 9:56
Speaker 1: too perfect as a case study in bureaucratic buck passing.
• 10:00
Speaker 1: The state stepped aside because the feds were supposedly handling it,
• 10:04
Speaker 1: and years later the state had to restart its own
• 10:06
Speaker 1: work because the federal record revealed questions still sitting there.
• 10:10
Speaker 1: New Mexico subsequently carried out what its officials described as
• 10:14
Speaker 1: the first law enforcement search of the former ranch. Yo,
• 10:17
Speaker 1: think about that shit for a moment before accepting another
• 10:20
Speaker 1: lecture about how every avenue had been exhausted. A property
• 10:25
Speaker 1: repeatedly identified by accusers and witnesses as a site of
• 10:28
Speaker 1: alleged abuse was still producing a first state law enforcement
• 10:32
Speaker 1: search in 2026. If that is what an exhausted investigation
• 10:37
Speaker 1: looks like, the word exhausted has been beaten beyond recognition.
• 10:42
Speaker 1: The far sharpened when New Mexico tried to obtain the
• 10:44
Speaker 1: unredacted federal records it said it needed to do the
• 10:47
Speaker 1: job Washington had once asked it not to do. Torres
• 10:51
Speaker 1: said his office made repeated requests to the Justice Department
• 10:54
Speaker 1: for material identifying potential victims, witnesses, co-conspirators, and other people
• 11:00
Speaker 1: relevant to the reopened case. By July, he was publicly
• 11:04
Speaker 1: complaining that more than 130 days had passed without access
• 11:09
Speaker 1: his investigators sought. In a CNN interview, he said roughly
• 11:13
Speaker 1: 150 days had passed and contrasted the 31 pages he
• 11:17
Speaker 1: said New Mexico had received with the millions of pages
• 11:20
Speaker 1: held by the DOJ. The Justice Department answered that federal law,
• 11:25
Speaker 1: victim privacy rules, and court orders limited what it could
• 11:28
Speaker 1: hand over and insisted it stood ready to assist within
• 11:31
Speaker 1: those constraints. That's a legal position the department is entitled
• 11:35
Speaker 1: to make. It's also a spectacular political look for an
• 11:39
Speaker 1: administration that that had spent the previous year telling everyone
• 11:43
Speaker 1: the Epstein matter was exhausted. Nothing says every lead has
• 11:47
Speaker 1: been run down, like a state attorney general begging the
• 11:49
Speaker 1: federal government for the unredacted names necessary to run down leads.
• 11:55
Speaker 1: Nothing says complete cooperation, like two law enforcement agencies arguing
• 11:59
Speaker 1: in public over whether one of them is withholding the
• 12:02
Speaker 1: evidence the other says it needs. And nothing says case closed,
• 12:06
Speaker 1: like the state threatening litigation, just to get access to
• 12:09
Speaker 1: the case file. All right, folks, we're going to wrap
• 12:11
Speaker 1: up episode one right here. And in the next episode,
• 12:14
Speaker 1: we're going to pick up with episode two. All the
• 12:16
Speaker 1: information that goes with this episode can be found in
