- 2:01Last week, it was announced at West Virginia State University President Eric Cage
- 2:06is going to join us to talk about that a little bit later on,
- 2:07plus lots of the news lately about homeschooling. A big proponent of homeschooling is
- 2:14Delegate Kathy has Kraus, and I wanted to I want to get in and
- 2:16talk to her because Kathy is one that a couple of her kids she did
- 2:22home. Matter of fact, I think she has won now that she homeschools,
- 2:23and some others she went sent to public schools. There's all these questions
- 2:28about and it all comes in the way of the Kennedy Miller tragedy in Booon
- 2:31County. I invited Delegate Crouse in because again she's a proponent of homeschooling.
- 2:36She's done it herself. I want to kind of, you know, pick
- 2:38her brain a little bit on what's right, what's wrong, and what we
- 2:42can do to somehow make the reporting of the whole thing better. So we'll
- 2:46get into that a little bit later on. It was came to light over
- 2:49a couple of last couple of days that one of the one of the ladies
- 2:53involved in the ty Hunt situation has now filed a lawsuit against the City of
- 2:57Charleston and the Charleston Police Department. I'm going to talk about that a little
- 3:00bit later on. Plus, baby Dog is everywhere. Baby dogs showing up
- 3:04all over the state of West Virginia, these capital murals and got to give
- 3:07you know, I got to get my take on that as well. But
- 3:09as always, your phone calls and text are welcome to phone calls to the
- 3:13show a service of big Ley Pigley Whigley on Spring Street. Texting services provided

- 3:27Now each month we get a visit from one of the businesses of the
- 3:30Meeks Company, good friends of mine out of Putnam County. This morning they're
- 3:35going to talk about not one, but two of them. One of the
- 3:37sponsors of the show you hear me talk about every day. It's fresh Air,
- 3:39one of their sister companies you're going to learn more about. John Lovejoy
- 3:43though, is from Fresh Air and he's with us now. John, you're
- 3:45the veteran here. Good morning sir, Good morning Dave. How are you.
- 3:47I'm doing fine, Thank you, and welcome to the show. Now
- 3:50we're going to transition into one of the newest ventures of Meeks here in a
- 3:55couple of moments. But I'm going to talk about fresh Air sponsors of this
- 3:59show we make the transition. How how are things going in fresh Air house
- 4:01business? Things are going fantastic. We're hearing great responses back from our clients
- 4:08during this heat wave that just by changing their filters, they've noticed that their
- 4:15house is staying cooler, but their units aren't working as hard. So which
- 4:20means and I'm making the I'm making the hand signals of cash here, right,
- 4:25it does. It means that it's saving them money because less energy is
- 4:29being consumed, and it's happy customers. That's what we like. And with
- 4:33this heat and that we've had, and we got a couple like a day
- 4:38or so break, it's gonna warm. But they say that this Saturday is
- 4:40probably going to be as hot as what last Saturday was. I was having
- 4:45this conversation with my wife just a couple of days ago, when you know,
- 4:46over the weekend, when it was as hot as what it was.
- 4:48I made the commentary. I said, well, I've seen on social media
- 4:51people posting, Hey, my my unit's out whatever, you guys can't do
- 4:55anything about that. But it is a proven fact that having the right kind
- 5:01of filter and the right size filter can go a long way to making sure
- 5:04that your units are running more efficiently exactly. And that's one thing that really
- 5:09sets us apart. We are not a one solution shop because there's more that
- 5:15goes into that. There's different types of filters based on your your lifestyle at
- 5:20your home or your business. You know, the number of people there,
- 5:24you know, pets it being involved. Even things as simple as burning candles
- 5:30or you know, you have a fireplace in your home. All these things
- 5:32affect probably the candle with the potpourri and all that. So that kind of
- 5:35surprises me, really it does, simply because the smoke that goes comes from
- 5:40a candle, you know, will you know, go into the air and
- 5:45it affects the air indoor air quality, and so things along that line determine,
- 5:49you know, what type of filter you need, how often that needs
- 5:53to be changed in order to keep your unit working at its peak. And
- 5:57you offer this service with fresh air for red residential but for also for any
- 6:01kind of a business, for restaurants, for churches, for just about anything.
- 6:05Yes, absolutely residential, commercial, industrial, churches, banks, restaurants,
- 6:13you name it. We say, any type of filter in any location.
- 6:15Give me a without using a name. Give me a success store you've
- 6:18had here recently when somebody, whether it's a business or just an individual person
- 6:24will give me a success story. Yeah, individual person just commenting about like
- 6:29I said, you know, we're hearing words back that you know, their
- 6:33house is staying much cooler than it has in years past since they've switched over
- 6:39to Fresh Air filter services. And everybody loves the technicians that come out.
- 6:45You know, we're hearing great praises about the professionalism. They love the fact
- 6:49that the the filter frames are built on site so it's a tight, secure
- 6:56fit into their HVAC unit. And you know, they're just really shocked at
- 7:03the difference that it's made because they really didn't pay much attention to their air
- 7:09filter prior to and you know, so seeing the difference, I had somebody
- 7:14tell me this, a customer tell me this morning. They said, if
- 7:15people would just try it, that's all it would take for them to see
- 7:19the difference. And where can people learn more? Give me a website,
- 7:23give me numbers. What you got website is Fresh air Filters dot us okay
- 7:28and the office number is three zero four four four zero one one zero four

- 8:09I'm gonna let you introduce this gentleman and then we're going to get to know
- 8:11this guys. Another service that that the Meek's Company offers, Go aheady,
- 8:15it is you know, fresh air. We always like to say that we
- 8:20like to give our customers peace of mind that they've got the best indoor air
- 8:24quality. Well along the lines of peace of mind. We also have Josh
- 8:28Biebe. Josh is our sales guy with our security company. It's Jute Security.
- 8:35Now, that's Jute j O O T JO. That's the name of
- 8:37the company, Jute Jute And we're going to get in that a little bit
- 8:41later on. But Josh, welcome to the show man, Thank you,
- 8:45thank you for being here. All right, So I got to ask you,
- 8:48and I know that you get this question a lot. Where does the
- 8:52name jute jot? Where does Jute come from? So? Juke comes from
- 8:56our two owners, James and thor U, and they did some research during
- 9:01the time of building the company about five years ago that companies with two o's
- 9:07were successful, like Google and others. So it sticks with you. Jute.
- 9:11It's a quick, easy name to remember. Yeah, and again I'm
- 9:13sure you get that a lot. As a matter of fact, I ask
- 9:15you that at an event not long ago. What the heck does jute mean?
- 9:18All right? So what kind of services do you offer with you?
- 9:20So we have a home security and automation as well as commercial, So any
- 9:24type of security system, cameras, different home automation services that you could think
- 9:30of or need. We can offer and how big is this business becoming?
- 9:33Right now? It's growing very very quickly. We've been staying pretty busy with
- 9:37some commercial accounts, but we're just about to switch over into some more marketing
- 9:41for some more local houses and different neighborhoods in the Hurricane area and then start
- 9:46expanding out of that, but really starting to step into more of the residential.
- 9:52So now you're based in Putnam Kenny, but you guys, what's your
- 9:54footprint? Where can you go anywhere? We're all along the east coast right
- 9:58now, so we have a different locations in the Carolinas that they have.
- 10:03We have all over West Virginia will go. So, so when you get
- 10:05a call from somebody that says I am thinking about getting a home security system,
- 10:11that's just I mean, you know, they maybe they've had some incidence
- 10:13in their neighbor but maybe they have it. Maybe they just say, well,
- 10:15you know, I think it's time to time to get one. Take
- 10:16us through the process. What exactly do you do? I call you and
- 10:20I say, hey, I need you to come out and tell me what
- 10:22I need. Tell me what that consultation process if you will looks like so
- 10:26personally, I like to go out and meet the customer. I like to
- 10:28just go and see what your home looks like, see what you're thinking first
- 10:33off, and then potentially suggest some other things that I see in the area
- 10:39or some other areas that you could be watching out for. So typically what
- 10:43I tell a customer is, you know the whole best. This is where
- 10:46you live, this is where you're at every day, So you tell me
- 10:48what you think needs to be here to be secure, and then I can
- 10:50recommend things if I see as well, But really just try to listen to
- 10:54the customer and what they need. How elaborate can you go with your systems?
- 10:58Is that? Because I know you probably have that person that calls for
- 11:01their residence for example, that just calls and says, look, I just
- 11:03I just want something really simple. Then you may have somebody if you live
- 11:07in a palatial estate like John Lovejoy does, if you say, look,
- 11:11I need something to keep an eye on my ferraris or something like John does.
- 11:15So what are the differences though? What compares contrast simple to as big
- 11:20as you go? You do a very simple automation or home security system for
- 11:26around forty dollars a month that just comes with a regular security panels, some
- 11:30door sensors, things like that. But you can go as far as connecting
- 11:33to Google Smart Home different things like that. You can do whole home automation
- 11:39where you're controlling your lights on a timer. Connect and you guys can do
- 11:43all that, yes, for the people. Because this sounds really complicated.
- 11:46I'm not going to lie to you, Josh, this sounds really complicated,
- 11:48But you guys can set all that up and give somebody like a simple control
- 11:56on your phone. Everything's an app on your phone. It's everything right there.
- 11:58And so I mean, I'm assuming you're traveling somewhere, you can just
- 12:03log on and take a look at what's going on at your home. Absolutely,
- 12:05I would have hated that as a teenager, That's all I'm saying.
- 12:07And me and my buddies would have hated that as a teenager. I'm just
- 12:09gonna I'm gonna leave it there. But so again, simple to extravagant as
- 12:15possible. Very yes. And you can even set it up like you said,
- 12:18for if you have kids, things like that. You can set it
- 12:20up for notifications when somebody's coming in or out. You can have it specific
- 12:24to you could set door codes to where you know exactly who is coming in
- 12:28the house at what time, things like that when they're leaving. So I
- 12:31mean you can get it very very complex. Well, we're gonna be talking
- 12:35to you more over the next couple of months because I think you guys are
- 12:37going to kind of take over from Fresh Air. We're done with Fresh Air
- 12:39and we will look to you. Guys have sponsored the show for a while,
- 12:43so we'll have you on again next month to get into a little bit
- 12:45more laborator tales. John is always it's pleasure to have you on the show.
- 12:48And again you talked about you and I were texting yesterday about peace of
- 12:52mind in your home. Yes, with this heat, you know you got
- 12:54to have the filters to make sure that your your system is running properly.
- 12:58But there's no peace of mind like knowing that your stuff is taken care of.
- 13:01And that's what you can get from Jute. So joot is the is
- 13:07the name of the company Real Supple based in the in the Hurricane area,
- 13:09Tays Valley. Give us a phone number, give us a website, working
- 13:13people learn more about you. The phone number is six eight one two three

- 16:07am I laugh about? I'm go going and tell you I got Kat Delly
- 16:08Kathy as Krass here. I was explaining to her and Ryan, you'll appreciate
- 16:12this. I was explaining to her about the remodeling that's going on around here,
- 16:15and I was talking about you know when when you remodel a building that
- 16:19is this old. You know, you're running issues and we're doing a total
- 16:22remodel here. This my show is going to be on on on camera,
- 16:26just like Hoppies is. We're remodeling all the studios, so it's going to
- 16:29be a complete I mean, everything's total chaos up here right now. And
- 16:33I was telling Kathy the history of the building and I referred to this building
- 16:37instead of being the frankin the I refer to it as the old Frankenberry mansion.
- 16:44So it's in the cereal. It's not the Frankenberry Mansion. I am
- 16:48going for blood work a little bit later on in the morning, I have
- 16:51an appointment and I'm doing the fasting thing and the only thing I'm allowed to
- 16:55have is black coffee, which is fine. That's why I drink my coffee
- 16:57anyway. But yeah, I'm cappying it and I'm hungry, and so it's
- 17:02not the franken Berry Mansion. Ryan, just to let the archives show that.

- 17:18Corp dot net because what you don't know can hurt you. Coming up on
- 17:22tomorrow's shown, I began talking Regatta in Charleston in his back. Next week,
- 17:26our good friend Metie Ryali Is Brian Hughes, who's always a big part
- 17:27of Regatta, is going to stop by on the show tomorrow. Attorney Rusty
- 17:32Webb is here. Now. We had him scheduled last week and here I
- 17:34was ready, you know, to to disown mister Webb as a friend,
- 17:40and because he just no showed last week and I couldn't figure it out why.
- 17:42Well, you know, he he was fishing and he dropped his phone
- 17:49in the I think it was the New River. And if you're a person
- 17:53like you know, I'm sure Rusty's a lot busier than I am. You
- 17:56live by your phone as far as your all of your appointments or whatever.
- 17:59Yeah, it PLoP when all Bill danced there and went to the bottom of
- 18:03the New River somewhere. So Rusty is still recovering from that. And he
- 18:07reached out to me over the weekend. So Rusty's gonna And the reason I'm
- 18:11having Rusty in is because the Normandy commemoration was early this month and he was
- 18:17actually there, not in the original Normandy, not that, but I mean
- 18:19he was actually there for the commemoration. So I'm gonna talk to Rusty about
- 18:23that coming up on tomorrow's show. Delegate Kathy hiss Chraus is here. DELI
- 18:26good, good morning. So it learn took me a long time to get
- 18:30to you, but I'm sorry. At least got talking about the Frankenberry mansion
- 18:33and stuff as I was here. So first of all, I don't think
- 18:37I've had you on the air since the May primary, So congratulations on your
- 18:41primary win. Now do you have opposition in the general at this moment,
- 18:44I have no one. So I am the next delegate in the nineteenth district
- 18:48again, okay, and explain again, as I always do, explain what
- 18:53the nineteenth district is worth. So the nineteenth district is just within Putnam County.
- 18:57It is everything on the or side of the river Buffalo down through Nitro
- 19:02and then it comes over and takes in a little bit of Scott Depot on
- 19:04the south side of the river. Okay, all right, I ask you
- 19:08to be on the show, Delegate, because you have for as long as
- 19:11I've known, you've been a huge proponent of homeschooling. Or maybe hold on
- 19:17before you interrupt me, let me live before you correct me, I should
- 19:19say what you're entitled to. A more correct term for you would be I
- 19:22didn't like the way I phrased that would be you're a proponent of school choice.
- 19:26Yes, whether it is public school, whether it's homeschooling, whether it's
- 19:32charter schools, or you know some we have an array of array available.
- 19:37You homeschooled a couple of a couple of your kids, Is that right?
- 19:38Because you got right? Do you have thirty seven children now somewhere along that
- 19:42line, somewhere there? But my first three all graduated public school, and
- 19:48the last two. I homeschooled my son from his first day of first grade
- 19:53all the way through graduation. And my daughter was getting ready when I pulled
- 19:59them out, was getting ready to go into a second year of preschool.
- 20:02And I've homeschooled her all the way through and she just graduated this year.
- 20:06All right. So these questions delegate about accountability and homeschooling. Many of them,
- 20:11as you well know, come in the wake of the tragedy in Boone
- 20:15County with Kennedy Miller. A lot of finger pointing between the governor's office,
- 20:21the police, CBS, school system, et cetera. I'm not going to
- 20:23ask you to get into any of that, but school officials had stated,
- 20:27as best I understand it, and you've been on top of the story from
- 20:30day one, that they hadn't heard from the caregivers for the little girl in
- 20:38some time that they said that she was being homeschooled, and apparently they hadn't
- 20:45heard from her, you know, a couple of years or whatever. So
- 20:48what exactly as somebody who homeschooled a couple of their kids, and again you've
- 20:52been a big part of this, what exactly are the requirements for those at
- 20:56homeschool? So the first requirement upfront is you have to file a notice of
- 21:00intent saying that you're going to homeschool. Who does that notice go to?
- 21:04That notice by law goes to the superintendent of the county where you reside.
- 21:10Okay, So we're just going to say that if you're living right here,
- 21:14let's say you're living in in St. Albans or Okay, use that as
- 21:17example. So you have to contact the Kanak County superintendent the Supertendent's office and
- 21:22say, I intend I got little Johnny here. I know kids don't name
- 21:25their kid Johnny anymore, but I intend to homeschool my kid basically. And
- 21:30is that like in a letter? Is it an email? On? Normally
- 21:33it's a we have letters that are already filled out with all the pertinent information,
- 21:38and even the ones we have and the one that was actually used in
- 21:42this case, it spells out everything you know that you'll turn in assessments on
- 21:48certain years and everything else. So that is that's the first step is to
- 21:53begin your homeschooling is filing that notice of intent, and then every year you
- 21:59have to do an assessment. And those assessments can either be testing with the
- 22:03standardized test that meet state requirements just like the public like the public schools,
- 22:08or it can be a portfolio review by a certified teacher. So what did
- 22:14you do? If you don't mind my asking, what did you do with
- 22:15your and you've got one to your homeschooling now right because no will just just
- 22:18graduate. I'm sorry you said that earlier. So what did you choose to
- 22:22do? Normally? I chose portfolios because I felt those evaluated my children the
- 22:27best I could see where they were at, what work they had done,
- 22:32and you sat down that you said, with a with a certified teacher,
- 22:34with a certified teacher, and they went over their work for the year.
- 22:37So that's like a public school teacher. You just contact somebody at the high
- 22:41school. I mean, how does that. We have a large list of
- 22:44teachers that will that know the homeschooling law and are going to do the evaluations
- 22:48and everything. How long do those and I'm sorry to ask so many questions,
- 22:51but how long do those assessments normally take? You sit down with the
- 22:55portfolio. We talked a couple hours. We talked in thirty minutes. What
- 22:57are we talking? They're usually not and it's a student part of that.
- 23:00Did they talk? They can be, they can be. It just all
- 23:03depends on the teacher and how they're being doing. Of course, during COVID,
- 23:07so many things went virtual. There's so many different ways to do a
- 23:11portfolio. You can, you know, you can take pictures of activities the
- 23:17kids have done. If you have to show the five different subjects, you
- 23:21have to show that they've progressed in certain subjects and that those were covered in
- 23:25everything. But you know always through in extra things, activities the kids did
- 23:30you took them on, like the clay center, you took them out of
- 23:33took them or something exactly exactly. It's different things that they had done throughout
- 23:37the year. If they did certain projects, maybe I didn't want to save
- 23:41a big trifle board because they did a science project. I took pictures of
- 23:45it and would put that in their portfolio for the teacher to look over and
- 23:48say, Okay, this is all they did. So you would have that
- 23:52teacher look it over. They fill out a form that says they either passed
- 23:56the subjects, or they progressed it the subjects, or they did not And
- 24:02that's up to the teacher on what they felt if they didn't, if they
- 24:04did the correct work or not. So one of the educational requirements to homeschool
- 24:10kids. If I decide I have a kid now, I want a homeschool,
- 24:12what do I have to be able to do to Heaven forbid my kids
- 24:18to teach this kid? What would I have to do? You have to
- 24:21show progress in five subjects? Talry about me the teacher? What kind of
- 24:26certifications? What kind of qualifications do I have to have as a parent to
- 24:30as a parent. You as a parent, to be able to homeschool your
- 24:33child, you have to have a high school diploma or equivalent at least.
- 24:40Okay, so you don't have to have a college degree. You used to.
- 24:45You used to have to have four years above what your child whatever grade
- 24:49they were in. So say your child was in high school and you didn't
- 24:52have a bachelor's degree, you could not homeschool them. But that is no
- 24:56longer true. As long as you have a high school equivalent or high school
- 25:00diploma or equivalent, you can homeschool your children. Talking again with Delegate Kathy
- 25:06has Krous about homeschooling in the state of West Virginia, Dave Island Show and
- 25:08five Eddie Live is brought to you in part by Morgan to Morgan. If
- 25:11you're injured, hire Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. Now
- 25:15one of the things, and I'm going to give you an opportunity to refute
- 25:21this if you wish that you hear about and again, every just like every
- 25:25public school is different and every private school, they're all different. So you
- 25:27don't want to get into absolutes. But a lot of times people say,
- 25:30well, I don't think homeschooling is a good thing because they don't get the
- 25:33socialization. Now again with some parents that are homeschooling their kids, that could
- 25:38be the case, just like they're not getting socialization if they're going to George
- 25:41Washington High School, as could happen, you know, or any other school
- 25:45for that matter. But I mentioned on the show before that one of my
- 25:49best friends whose name is Kathy and also spells it Ie by the way,
- 25:52with k Chef, she and her husband homeschooled their kids and talk to her
- 26:00from time to time, and they lived in Logan and she would say,
- 26:04oh, well, we're going to Charleston for this, We're going to She
- 26:07was gone five days a week doing something with other kids that were like there
- 26:14was there were like these networks and they Okay, today we're going to the
- 26:17Clay Center. You know, today we are going to Blinter Hassett. I'm
- 26:22just using those as examples. There was a lot of group activities that they
- 26:26had for kids that were being homeschool We had to quit socializing so we could
- 26:32get school work. That's so much out there. School. Yeah, there
- 26:37was just so much going on. And I even created the Facebook group the
- 26:41unsocialized homeschoolers because I got so tired of people telling me, oh, your
- 26:45kids are going to be unsocialized, and I'm like, are you kidding me?
- 26:47There's so much out there, So I started this Facebook group to put
- 26:51all of the opportunities out there so people would know where to go to to
- 26:56take their kid to a class or to a field trip or whatever. And
- 27:00even back during COVID, all the proms locally for the high schools were canceled
- 27:04and the homeschoolers had their yearly social prom whatever you want to call it,
- 27:11And of course our venue kept getting canceled, and we ended up having our
- 27:15high school well, our teen social because it was for twelve thirteen and up
- 27:22at my farm, and I had one hundred and fifty homeschoolers on my farm
- 27:30for a dance music dinner, all of it under a tent, poured down
- 27:36the rain right as it was beginning to start, and then it stopped and
- 27:37cleared up, so we had mud, we had cars, We had dozens
- 27:44of parents exactly, We had dozens of parents, some extra kids that hung
- 27:48out because mom was staying to help out, and mom couldn't leave the little
- 27:52one behind. So I would say on our farm we had like two hundred
- 27:56people for a So how roughly you don't have to give me an exact number,
- 28:03but ballpark figure how many? How many students in West Virginia homeschool there's
- 28:07about twenty six thousand right now. I want to have six thousand and that
- 28:11much as that is ray, I was going to say how much. It's
- 28:12because I have people on here from time to time talking about charter schools and
- 28:18virtual academies and any things other than the traditional brick and mortar school. And
- 28:23since COVID, it's exploded. Have you seen that in the world of homeschooling
- 28:27as well? So back in fifteen sixteen, homeschoolers beat private school numbers.
- 28:33We became about eleven thousand. At that time, private school was down to
- 28:37a little over ten thousand teacher strikes. We went up. I'd say we
- 28:41were probably around thirteen thousand or so during COVID. I thought we were probably
- 28:48mid twenties because I was busy just trying to help people. How do you
- 28:53do it? How do you get started? What do we do? All
- 28:56that? Found out that during COVID, from the census had put us actually
- 29:00around forty some thousand, that has of course backed off some and with the
- 29:06Hope Scholarship and those at homeschool through Hope Scholarship, and then traditional homeschoolers and
- 29:11homeschoolers under exemption. See we are currently at about twenty six thousand. What's
- 29:18the biggest reason, delegate that you get if somebody contacts you or someone else,
- 29:22or what's the biggest reason you hear from parents that they are choosing homeschooling
- 29:27Two of them, one being their child's being bullied in school whatever you know,
- 29:33whoever it's from, whether it's from other students, staff, teachers,
- 29:37administration, whatever the case may be. One of the biggest ones is bullying,
- 29:42so the activity that way, and another big one is what's being taught
- 29:47or what is not being taught. Collaborating on that all of the different agendas
- 29:52that are going through the public school system, parents aren't wanting it. Give
- 29:56me an example of something a lot of it now is the lgbt QT agenda
- 30:03transgenderism. Telling a child, oh you can, okay, little little Susie
- 30:11says, I like to play with trucks. Well, then you've got some
- 30:14in the school system that'll say, okay, little Susie you're a boy.
- 30:17Well, no, you're just a girl that likes to play with trucks.
- 30:19Yeah, you're a girl like me. You know, I was. I
- 30:22was a tomboy growing up, but I was far from being a boy.
- 30:26But at the time I could see if I had been in school now,
- 30:30I would have been pushed to be a boy. And that's far from one.
- 30:33So the agenda and and that, that and and bullying, you know,
- 30:38the two biggest the two biggest reasons that I see what would and I
- 30:45kind of and I kind of got to move along here about this all day.
- 30:48But what what's the and we've kind of touched on this a little bit.
- 30:51What's the biggest misconception about those who choose to homeschool? Is it the
- 30:53socialization thing? That is probably the biggest one. That and uh, it
- 30:59used to be that, you know, there were some far far, extremely
- 31:03right religious person and the children weren't allowed to socialize with anybody at any time.
- 31:11And that that's just the furthest thing from the truth. We cover all
- 31:15spectrums. I don't want to I'm not going to ask you again, in
- 31:19your role as a citizen or as a legislator, legislator to get into particulars
- 31:25here because there is an ongoing investigation. But as I said, you have
- 31:26been watching closely, you and others the situation with the with the Miller girl
- 31:33in Boone County. Based on what you know, where should the red flags
- 31:40have gone up as far as the schooling aspect of it or are you any
- 31:45any other aspect that you've seen part of that as far as the schooling aspect.
- 31:49From the time the date of the notice of intent being filed, when
- 31:53assessments should have been turned in, this child should have had an eighth grade
- 31:57assessment turned in and by June thirtieth of twenty twenty three, so a police
- 32:05officer, state policeman did a well check. I think it was March ninth
- 32:09of twenty twenty three. The child should have had something turned into the Board
- 32:15of Education as far as an assessment, be it testing or a portfolio review
- 32:19by June thirtieth of twenty twenty three. This young child was found emaciated and
- 32:25skeletal April of twenty twenty four, so it had been ten months that this
- 32:31note or this assessment had been expected for this child that the school board did
- 32:37nothing to check to find out why it was done to me? Did it
- 32:43just in your opinion and this is opinion only, did it just fall through
- 32:45the cracks? I mean, because is it the job of somebody? And
- 32:49I know that our teachers and school board workers are you know, they work
- 32:53very hard, but is it the job of somebody in a particular school system
- 32:57to check on these things? I mean, Boone County's much attend much much
- 33:00smaller than Kanawa County, So I mean, I know they have a lot
- 33:04of kids to take care of, but is so somebody should have checked on
- 33:07this? In your opinion, in your yes, And it's in the law
- 33:09that you know at any time there's one part an exempt or in eighteen eighty
- 33:15one that if something's not followed, that the attendance director can do something about
- 33:22truancy. And then within homeschool law itself, if the superintendent thinks anything is
- 33:29wrong, they always have the option to take it to a circuit court.
- 33:34Circuit court, right just like if they were again truant from exactly from a
- 33:37public school. Exactly. As we wrap up, as a legislator, and
- 33:40I realize that you are one of many in the House and the Senate,
- 33:45but what can or should the legislature. Is there anything they could do to
- 33:49try to remedy situations like this in the future. I think the laws are
- 33:53already in place. This was a this was a people problem, not a
- 33:59process in law problem. People in charge did not follow the laws that are
- 34:05already in place. And sometimes it's not in the best interest for the legislature
- 34:10to step in when there's already things in play, so enforced the laws that
- 34:15are theirs. What you what I'm hearing you say? Correct? All right?
- 34:19And this is not a this is not an issue with homeschooling. This
- 34:22just happened to be one of the factors that just it looks like sadly slipped
- 34:27through the Cracksit nobody checked on this tract. And we have had, unfortunately,
- 34:31dozens of children over the last couple of years pass away, and the
- 34:37majority of those have been public school children. And we're not jumping in with
- 34:44everyone to change a law within the public school system because something happened that a
- 34:52child has passed away that went to public school. Delikatcathe has Krause. I
- 34:58always appreciate you being here and week we will talk soon. Thanks a lot.

- 38:38toether. Your folks are going to send me that picture. I'll get it
- 38:40posted online. A little bit later on all Right, big news out of
- 38:44Institute last week. You've talked about it on the show before, but now
- 38:46it's really going to be a thing. This Department of Agriculture at State talk
- 38:51about it absolutely. You know, we had a wonderful day last Tuesday on
- 38:54campus. Governor Justice was there to announce a fifty milligan dollar investment in West
- 39:00Virginia State University. He signed a bill which will bring fifty million dollars to
- 39:06our campus to build a new state of the art agricultural laboratory, a laboratory
- 39:10that I described as a win win for West Virginia because basically what we're going
- 39:15to be doing through that facility, Dave, if we're going to be bringing
- 39:19together the expertise of West Virginia State as an eighteen ninety land Grand Institution,
- 39:24with the expertise of the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, and together we will
- 39:28be working hand in hand to help solve some of the most pressing challenges that
- 39:34we face around agriculture, to help drive innovation and agriculture, to help build
- 39:37a sustainable workforce pipeline for agriculture. So I think it's just going to be
- 39:40a huge, huge win for West Virginia. And as I said on Tuesday,
- 39:46I really do appreciate the unwavering support of Governor Jim Justice, of Speaker
- 39:52Roger Hanshaw, of Senate President Craig Blair, and of the West Virginia Legislature
- 39:57help us to get this done. It's been a long time. I'm coming.
- 40:00It has been president. It has been a true labor of love.
- 40:05But what I said on Tuesday was this. You know, the two words
- 40:07I use to describe the project and the process were promises kept, Promises kept
- 40:15throughout the process, throughout the twist and turns. The Governor, our Senate
- 40:21President, our House Speaker never wavered. They're never wavered in their commitment because
- 40:24they believe like I do, that West Virginia State University is the best place
- 40:29for that facility. We are well positioned again as a landgrand institution to be
- 40:35home to that new agricultural laboratory which is really going to help transform agriculture in
- 40:40West Virginia. I want to get into the particulars of this lab I mean
- 40:45before we talk anything else, that's talk about what's going to be there.
- 40:49Yeah, So what I've talked about during our previous conversations is a need to
- 40:53bring a School of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources to West Virginia State University,
- 41:00and that new facility will serve as a home for this new school,
- 41:04in addition to her serving us home to some new enhanced laboratories for the West
- 41:08Virginia Department of Agriculture. So we envision in that space having classrooms, having
- 41:15laboratories, having faculty offices to support the faculty and the students who will be
- 41:21taking part in our new School of Agriculture, and of course the Partner of
- 41:23Agriculture will work to make sure that they have what they need in terms of
- 41:27the enhanced agriculture laboratories. And now that everything's really the wheels are really really
- 41:32in motion. Now now the hard work begins. Now that this was not
- 41:36hard getting there, but now you got to actually build a thing. Yeah,
- 41:38you know, we are obviously moving to the next phase of the project,
- 41:44which is will be actually getting shovels in the ground. And as you
- 41:46know, anytime you're dealing with a complex project, you're dealing with a significant
- 41:52amount of public resources. There's going to be a lot of additional work to
- 41:57be done. But we are already having conversations with the Governor's office and looking
- 42:02forward to laying out a clear plan that will allow us to get this project
- 42:07moving forward. We have any kind of any kind of a timeframe, you
- 42:10know, I think like next Wednesday, just thought it out. I don't
- 42:15think it'll be next Wednesday. But we will be moving moving at a very
- 42:20very efficient pace. Yeah, And I mean this thing is just going to
- 42:23be so huge. I mean, it really is for the for the entire
- 42:27valley, the entire state, and the entire part of the country. Really
- 42:30absolutely. I mean, we all know that agriculture continues to be a significantly
- 42:37growing sector. We know that we all need food, fresh food to eat.
- 42:40We know that food and security continues to be a one of the most
- 42:45persistent challenges facing not just our country, but with facing the world. So
- 42:50this is a much needed facility. Like I said, it is definitely a
- 42:53win win. I believe it's a historic investment in West Virginia State University.
- 42:58Don't you think it's really interesting though, that what's old again is new again?
- 43:02I mean you think about you know, I mean, we're going back
- 43:06to the land. To kind of take a phrase for the nighteen sixties.
- 43:10You know, we're kind of going back because there's a definite need for this
- 43:15now sure. I mean it's really not a surprise to me though, Dave,
- 43:19because look, we were founded, as I've said, as a Landgran
- 43:22institution, and as a land Grand institution, we have a tripartheype mission focuses
- 43:27on teaching, research and community service, but are really our core priority as
- 43:32a land Grand institution has been around agriculture. So for litly one hundred and
- 43:37thirty three years, that has been our priority. So yes, we look
- 43:42forward to getting this lab build and look forward to continuing to ensure that agriculture
- 43:46is a priority in the state because I do believe that agriculture is our future.
- 43:52What else you got going on in state? I mean, all the
- 43:55focus has been on this, but there's always a ton of other things.
- 43:59What else, you know, We've got a ton of things happening at the
- 44:00university. You know. In some of our previous conversations we talked about our
- 44:05focus on cybersecurity, and a couple of weeks ago, we just received from
- 44:09Google a megan dollar investment in our cybersecurity program, a program that is not
- 44:16even two years old. So what that speaks to is one. It speaks
- 44:20to the work that West Virginia State University is doing the excellent work to raise
- 44:23our profile, to make sure we're focused on areas that are in demand within
- 44:30the workforce. But it also speaks of the fact that people are taking notice.
- 44:34People are taking notice that West Virginia State University is on the rise.
- 44:37And I've been saying this recently, Dave and I truly believe it. The
- 44:42West Virginia State University is undergoing a renaissance of idealism, of innovation, and
- 44:49of impact and people are taking notice. So whatever it's cybersecurity, whatever it's
- 44:52agriculture, whether it's nursing, whether it's engineering, whatever it may be,
- 44:58we are doing it, doing it well. And West Virginia State University is
- 45:01well positioned to help drive student success and the help drive economic development in our
- 45:07valley and across West Virginia. Well, I'll tell you a personal note here.
- 45:10They couldn't ask it for anybody better to be at the helm with this
- 45:13thing. I mean, you're done. As a matter of fact, I'm

- 49:40had previously filed a complaint against former police chief Ty Cunt has now filed a
- 49:45lawsuit against the City of Charleston and the police Department. The filing coming from
- 49:51Knawa County Circuit Court. Jennifer Harless is claiming damages for emotional and physical abuse
- 49:57by the former chiefs. She's also claiming the city and the department are liable
- 50:00for Hunt's actions. She says the case will probably well, I'm sorry she
- 50:04didn't say. Officials say that the case will probably end up in federal courts.
- 50:09No comment from the city, and one of the spokespeople from the City
- 50:14of Charleston said as of yesterday they had not seen that particular lawsuit. Coming
- 50:17up on talk Line this morning with Hobby Churchill, but more of the baby
- 50:21dog controversy. Everyone's favorite English bulldog is causing somewhat of a stir by suddenly
- 50:27showing up on Capitol murals. Now, this was all revealed last week.
- 50:30The governor says it may not be baby dog. Randall Reid Smith is the
- 50:38State Department of Arts, Culture, and History Secretary, and he's the guy
- 50:42that kind of put this whole thing together. He's going to speak to that
- 50:45with Hobby coming up at ten oh six, plus US Attorney Will Thompson,
- 50:47Ryin Smells, the Fox News Radio Westernrginiona Secretary of State, Mic Order and
- 50:51more all coming up talk line at ten o six this morning. So this
- 50:58whole baby dog thing, Uh, if you go and you look at the
- 51:05murals, and sometimes it's hard to just get through some of these stories,
- 51:09you know, uh with with with a straight face. But if you look
- 51:14at these murals, it's sure as anything in the world sound like a say,
- 51:20with the governor would make looks like it's baby dog hanging out at you
- 51:23know, Seneca Rocks or hanging out at some historical event. Now, Stephen
- 51:28Allen Adams are a good friend from Ogden Newspapers, frequent guests to the show,
- 51:31pointed out that when some of those activities would have been taking place English
- 51:36bulldogs were not even in America at that point. They weren't introduced until until
- 51:40years later. There are those that think it's I know, Hoppy did a
- 51:44poll on X about it that. There are those think it's incredibly tacky,
- 51:47it was terrible, and there are those that think, hey, it's a
- 51:50dog, you know, let it go. And I had a I had
- 51:55a text about that earlier. It says text, Uh, Texas, David,
- 51:59I was glad to see baby Dogs and sister on the Seneca Mural at
- 52:02the Capitol. We see the cardinal and the newly introduced Elk on the painting,
- 52:07and the English bulldog. In my opinion, Baby's or a baby Dog's
- 52:09rendition is a great addition. Thanks as a Texter or Hobby's gonna get into
- 52:15that with the man Randall Reid Smith, who's kind of somewhat responsible for the
- 52:17whole thing of it up talk line at ten o six, I am back
- 52:22with you once again tomorrow. We're gonna have a little rett to talk tomorrow
- 52:23plus Trusty Web Attorney. We'll be stopping by the show as well. My
