- 0:00Speaker 1: Here. The timing is perfect. Coco was walking over, Venus
- 0:03Speaker 1: sat down, Sloane Stevens came over. We have three decades
- 0:07Speaker 1: of excellence and three absolute jabbronis on this time. Chris
- 0:11Speaker 1: you then San Furri, Oda Lefkow humblely sitting next to Venus,
- 0:15Speaker 1: Williams Cocoa Golf and Sloane Stevens.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Thank you, guys.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Can we get some noise please on my television? Unbelievable? Wow,
- 0:26Speaker 1: let us go. I'm going with Venus because she is
- 0:29Speaker 1: the queen first, these two right here, specifically Coco, who
- 0:32Speaker 1: just went out there and won, to match today your
- 0:34Speaker 1: impressions of the young star who's really performing at a
- 0:38Speaker 1: super high level as of late.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Of course, so happy for you you're here. I'm so
- 0:43Speaker 3: glad you came and take the time out to be
- 0:45Speaker 3: with us here too, and just so proud of you too. Oh,
- 0:48Speaker 3: thank you. And she's had a great year so far.
- 0:51Speaker 3: And I know you have big dreams to win this tournament.
- 0:54Speaker 3: You've been so close. Yeah, and you can absolutely do it,
- 0:57Speaker 3: but you have to do it one match at a time. Yes,
- 0:59Speaker 3: But got the goods, you got the attitude. I know
- 1:01Speaker 3: you want to win every point, maybe too much sometimes,
- 1:05Speaker 3: So the passion is there and it's just more than anything,
- 1:08Speaker 3: it's entertaining, it's entertainment. Sport is so important, but the
- 1:12Speaker 3: entertainment factor is so important too, and you just give it,
- 1:15Speaker 3: like everybody can feel what you're feeling. I love that.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Thank you, Thank you, Cocoa. Go the person to your left,
- 1:21Speaker 1: right here? What does she mean to you? What do
- 1:23Speaker 1: you remember watching her?
- 1:25Speaker 2: Everything? You Serena, the reason I started this sport, and like,
- 1:29Speaker 2: being here is surreal. I didn't know that you were
- 1:31Speaker 2: going to be at the dest so I'm really happy
- 1:34Speaker 2: to be here. And yeah, I'm having a little moment here,
- 1:38Speaker 2: so I'm trying to get the words out, but honestly,
- 1:41Speaker 2: it means a lot to be here and hear that
- 1:42Speaker 2: from you, And yeah, I never would have thought when
- 1:46Speaker 2: I pick up a racket, I would be here, sitting
- 1:48Speaker 2: here with you and having this conversation.
- 1:50Speaker 3: I'm so glad you're here because of you and Sloan.
- 1:52Speaker 3: There are so many generations of girls who are picking
- 1:54Speaker 3: up rackets and that's so important. And also we played
- 1:57Speaker 3: doubles here. One of my doublet partners have very few,
- 2:02Speaker 3: so to be a part of that list.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So, and I know you're working with us at TNT.
- 2:08Speaker 1: You didn't know this was happening either. I don't think
- 2:10Speaker 1: any of us do. This is gonna happen the stars align.
- 2:12Speaker 1: What does this mean to you right now?
- 2:14Speaker 4: This is incredible. I mean, obviously I interviewed Coco after
- 2:16Speaker 4: her match today. I've hit a Cocoa when she was
- 2:19Speaker 4: literally seven years old. So it's like just the whole
- 2:22Speaker 4: full circle moment. I've been able to share the court
- 2:25Speaker 4: with Venus and just to be able to be around
- 2:28Speaker 4: both of them, and then obviously we all ended up
- 2:30Speaker 4: at the T and T desk.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Yes, how about that, Chris. Funny enough, You've known Cocoa
- 2:37Speaker 1: for a very long time. I mean you saw her
- 2:39Speaker 1: on what was it, an outdoor court in Atlanta, Union
- 2:42Speaker 1: crossing man shout out to you across what was How
- 2:46Speaker 1: old was she at that time?
- 2:47Speaker 5: She was about between five and seven. I think when
- 2:50Speaker 5: you were in Atlanta, she was still so young. Honestly,
- 2:52Speaker 5: when I saw her start to kind of sind as
- 2:54Speaker 5: one of the top juniors in the world, I didn't
- 2:56Speaker 5: even realize she was the same girl who was on
- 2:57Speaker 5: the court next to us. Wow, she actually lived in
- 3:00Speaker 5: the neighborhood and my parents, my dad and I we
- 3:01Speaker 5: used to just try to bum around when any free
- 3:03Speaker 5: co five in Southwest Atlanta. So to see everything come
- 3:06Speaker 5: full circle and to see the success that she's had,
- 3:08Speaker 5: I've it's really special, like truly to be able to
- 3:11Speaker 5: say I saw her from really the beginning and everything
- 3:13Speaker 5: that she's accomplished, and she remains one of the greatest people,
- 3:17Speaker 5: the most just humble people I've ever come across. So
- 3:20Speaker 5: it's been really really cool to see.
- 3:22Speaker 1: It's an honor to be amongst us, to be sitting
- 3:24Speaker 1: in it. Venus. You've been around Paris, You've been enjoying
- 3:27Speaker 1: the city I have. This is the era after Ralpha.
- 3:30Speaker 1: What is the energy right now? What are you feeling
- 3:32Speaker 1: from this tournament in the city.
- 3:34Speaker 3: The tournament is so many good players. It's scary how
- 3:37Speaker 3: good players are so young. Fonseca, Wow, how old is
- 3:40Speaker 3: he still in diapers?
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 3:42Speaker 3: He can, Like I wish I was hitting like that
- 3:45Speaker 3: at that age. So crazy, it's crazy. I love seeing that,
- 3:48Speaker 3: and you can see like the new rivalries that are
- 3:50Speaker 3: going to start forming. So I just can't wait to
- 3:52Speaker 3: sit back. I'll be watching eating popcorn, like watching good
- 3:55Speaker 3: tennis and the city of Paris is incredible, and I
- 3:58Speaker 3: just I'm I'm so happy here. I could literally live here,
- 4:02Speaker 3: but my mom and dad would not agree.
- 4:04Speaker 5: No.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I know I'm old enough now to move away, but
- 4:06Speaker 3: I still feel the guilt.
- 4:07Speaker 1: You know, I understand.
- 4:08Speaker 5: I can't, uh, Coco.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I've tried to give you a minute to collect yourself,
- 4:12Speaker 1: and I'm wondering, do you have any questions.
- 4:14Speaker 3: For venus questions?
- 4:16Speaker 2: I mean, there's a lot I could ask, but I mean,
- 4:20Speaker 2: for me, like what drives your like passion in this sport,
- 4:24Speaker 2: because I think you're one of the most passionate players
- 4:26Speaker 2: to I've ever played this game seriously, and I see that
- 4:30Speaker 2: every time you play, So I know, like being on tour,
- 4:34Speaker 2: have my little bit experience. Being on tour is not
- 4:36Speaker 2: always like easy. There's great moments and like some not
- 4:39Speaker 2: so great some moments. So how do you get thrown
- 4:41Speaker 2: through those not so great moments?
- 4:43Speaker 3: Passion like love love the game, but also a sheer
- 4:46Speaker 3: determination to have fun no matter what, Like you want
- 4:50Speaker 3: to win, but you want to look back and say
- 4:51Speaker 3: I had a good time. It's horrible to look back
- 4:54Speaker 3: and be like I hated it. You don't want to
- 4:55Speaker 3: remember it. You remember it like you felt sad so
- 4:58Speaker 3: wind loser draw like that was none to and like
- 5:00Speaker 3: making a life and a schedule that fit around happiness,
- 5:03Speaker 3: because when you're happy, you play well.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Right, so those two go hand in hand, and it's
- 5:07Speaker 3: like a simple equation but non negotiable.
- 5:11Speaker 1: It's his schedule.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Everything around you has to make you happy. And it
- 5:14Speaker 3: sounds a little selfish, but tennis players are selfish. We
- 5:18Speaker 3: are very selfish. But we can't help it but by ourselves,
- 5:23Speaker 3: so we have to be Yeah, but I think you're
- 5:25Speaker 3: doing perfect, No, thank you.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I was choking earlier that all three of you come
- 5:31Speaker 1: with it. Every single time Cocho has been rocking the
- 5:33Speaker 1: leather jacket out on the court. I'm not bringing up
- 5:35Speaker 1: the rackets.
- 5:37Speaker 5: The rackets, that's what happened.
- 5:41Speaker 2: They can't be her fault. Usually my coach puts them
- 5:44Speaker 2: in before my match, and I just thought he put
- 5:47Speaker 2: them in there. I should have double checked that they
- 5:49Speaker 2: were in there. And then I know, I said, I
- 5:51Speaker 2: thought I would be able to tell by weight, But so.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Much happened.
- 5:56Speaker 1: That clip.
- 5:57Speaker 2: So much happened pre match that I was just like flustered.
- 6:00Speaker 2: And then yeah, I didn't realize it, but it took
- 6:03Speaker 2: the cool loss like it made me less nervous because
- 6:05Speaker 2: I was like, what else, Like, what's the worst that
- 6:06Speaker 2: can happen after this?
- 6:08Speaker 3: I was like, man, she just went to work. She
- 6:09Speaker 3: got the rackets in this business.
- 6:12Speaker 2: As usually, Yeah, I mean I didn't. I had sure
- 6:14Speaker 2: determination because I was like, people are going to say
- 6:16Speaker 2: a loss because I didn't have my rackets, So I
- 6:18Speaker 2: was like, that's not going to be the narrative today.
- 6:20Speaker 1: But even slow when you were interviewing Coco and you
- 6:23Speaker 1: asked about the leather jacket, part of what you said
- 6:25Speaker 1: about it was, you know, I think it was Serena
- 6:27Speaker 1: and what she came. You guys have changed the way
- 6:30Speaker 1: fashion and tennis are involved, and you've challenged the norm
- 6:34Speaker 1: and that's not always easy. Is that something that you
- 6:37Speaker 1: also have kept going because you've been coming with fits
- 6:39Speaker 1: all week? I feel like sometimes you see tennis and
- 6:41Speaker 1: it's a polo shirt. You guys have done a lot
- 6:44Speaker 1: to change that there.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Definitely, I think fashion is a way to express yourself
- 6:48Speaker 4: without having to speak per se. I think in tennis
- 6:51Speaker 4: everything has been kind of you know, status quos, white shirts, polos.
- 6:56Speaker 4: It's very basic and I think being able to wear
- 6:59Speaker 4: things that make you feel good and make you feel
- 7:01Speaker 4: happy and the colors are bright and all of those things,
- 7:04Speaker 4: it actually makes you like it brings the best out
- 7:06Speaker 4: of you, I feel like, and it's just like another
- 7:08Speaker 4: part of an element that you can bring and help yourself.
- 7:11Speaker 4: I think there's so many different elements and things that
- 7:13Speaker 4: happen around you, but that's something that you can control
- 7:15Speaker 4: and you can like wear bright color and feel happy
- 7:17Speaker 4: and like love what you're wearing, love what you put on.
- 7:20Speaker 4: I feel good, I look good. I know nobody's touching
- 7:23Speaker 4: this fit like all of that, right, that makes a
- 7:25Speaker 4: big difference. When you're playing an individual sport and you're
- 7:27Speaker 4: on TV and you look back and you see yourself
- 7:29Speaker 4: on TV, you see what you're wearing, You're like, man,
- 7:31Speaker 4: I look good, and.
- 7:32Speaker 1: You have people emulating the looks and copying and they're
- 7:35Speaker 1: tagging you and photos and stuff like that, it's gotta be.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Special, definitely. I think obviously the leather jacket, I mean
- 7:41Speaker 4: you collab like all of those things are so special
- 7:43Speaker 4: and it's like the first time people are doing it,
- 7:45Speaker 4: especially in the sport kind of like going out and
- 7:46Speaker 4: actually trying to, you know, make an effort.
- 7:49Speaker 3: To oh there, you're right there.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Cute fashion, Yes, we love it, just bring.
- 7:54Speaker 3: More to the court. Yeah, Cocoa.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Do you get to help with some of these fashion
- 7:57Speaker 1: ideas with New Balance when you're pre tournaments?
- 7:59Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah for sure. We're usually planning like two
- 8:02Speaker 2: years in advance, so yeah, this a lot goes into it, obviously,
- 8:08Speaker 2: you guys being the icons.
- 8:09Speaker 3: I knew when I was young.
- 8:10Speaker 2: I was like, I'm going to be that girl who
- 8:13Speaker 2: cares about her fits, and like a lot of times
- 8:15Speaker 2: with these birds, you have to win to.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Like get to that point.
- 8:20Speaker 2: It took a while, but I'm grateful to New Balance
- 8:22Speaker 2: for letting me experiment and yeah, just showing up, like
- 8:25Speaker 2: Sloan was saying, showing up in a place and when
- 8:27Speaker 2: you feel good on the court, it means a lot.
- 8:29Speaker 2: And also, I feel like being a black woman in
- 8:31Speaker 2: this sport, like so much part of our culture is
- 8:33Speaker 2: fashion and I wanted to bring some of that and
- 8:36Speaker 2: continue to bring some of that into our sport. So yeah,
- 8:38Speaker 2: I'm really excited to just be able to showcase this
- 8:41Speaker 2: on the biggest stages in tennis.
- 8:44Speaker 5: You know, it's a really cool scene here to see
- 8:47Speaker 5: three of the greatest athletes in the history of women's
- 8:49Speaker 5: send us all sitting beside each other, Three incredibly just
- 8:53Speaker 5: profound black women who've done great things in this sport.
- 8:56Speaker 5: I kind of want to divert a little bit to
- 8:58Speaker 5: something that you Cake and Venus having common escape rooms
- 9:03Speaker 5: and we walked out and go in the Yes, I remember.
- 9:11Speaker 5: So I wanted to ask both of you specifically, do
- 9:14Speaker 5: you have a favorite escape room experience? And Coco, don't
- 9:17Speaker 5: be afraid to say the one in which I saved
- 9:19Speaker 5: the day? Here, go ahead, don't remember that one doesn't
- 9:24Speaker 5: ring a bell. No, I don't recall you didn't know
- 9:26Speaker 5: what a floppy disc? Well, no, so you had a
- 9:27Speaker 5: thumb drive.
- 9:29Speaker 3: I have to show you.
- 9:30Speaker 5: Oh you put it in the computer.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Yeah, this is experience that's a generational This is not
- 9:36Speaker 2: my fault, like you know, But.
- 9:40Speaker 5: Is there one that sticks out in particular?
- 9:43Speaker 2: It was actually when we did with my family, and
- 9:45Speaker 2: I don't remember. It was like my whole family and
- 9:47Speaker 2: my uncle's there and I think I like fell on
- 9:49Speaker 2: the ground.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Yes, my uncle Big Kat was there and.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I think I fell on the ground because it was
- 9:53Speaker 2: like a scary one and there was like a jump scare,
- 9:56Speaker 2: and yeah, that one was scary.
- 9:57Speaker 5: And then I think.
- 9:58Speaker 2: When you and Ben and I we did that one,
- 10:01Speaker 2: the dragon.
- 10:02Speaker 5: One, we had to crawl into the bottom of it.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Yeah, that one was pretty that.
- 10:05Speaker 1: I've never done escape rooms, so I don't know this
- 10:08Speaker 1: is one.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Right now.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I'm always down to do one, and they know that
- 10:15Speaker 2: I love escape rooms. I think it's just fun. I
- 10:17Speaker 2: like games and it makes me feel like I'm like
- 10:19Speaker 2: in another world. So yeah, and I'm sure you can
- 10:22Speaker 2: relate to.
- 10:23Speaker 3: But she was doing it.
- 10:24Speaker 2: We were there late, just one of the one other
- 10:27Speaker 2: person I've never done on one other person, I feel
- 10:30Speaker 2: like I would be like they would hate me after
- 10:32Speaker 2: he already because I'm like too.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Mean in them.
- 10:35Speaker 5: You get so controlling. In There's crazy, You're the.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Only girl with two men in the room and they're
- 10:40Speaker 2: like being dumb. Sometimes you have.
- 10:44Speaker 1: You have to have a tendency to be the.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Number three.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Yes, Chris were we were actually talking before you guys
- 10:53Speaker 1: got here. Chris was talking about the fact that you
- 10:55Speaker 1: got mentioned in the Tyler the Creator song.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Yes, have you all.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Been mentioned in different lyrics? And do you have a
- 11:02Speaker 1: favorite of a song? Maybe you've been mentioned him. I
- 11:04Speaker 1: can imagine Venus has been mentioned my favorite.
- 11:06Speaker 2: She's in his Tia Tamara my Doja Cat. She says
- 11:09Speaker 2: he got hits like Venus and Serena. She probably, yeah, listen,
- 11:13Speaker 2: so one cool, But I don't know music that's my
- 11:16Speaker 2: favorite that he's been mentioned.
- 11:18Speaker 3: You got one.
- 11:19Speaker 1: No to everyone out there, Sloan Stevens is the song
- 11:23Speaker 1: right now.
- 11:24Speaker 2: It's okay, no, don't worry about it.
- 11:28Speaker 1: But I mean the fact that Tyler is your favorite,
- 11:30Speaker 1: and he says it. Did you listen to it or
- 11:33Speaker 1: did you get a text to let you know?
- 11:35Speaker 5: Well?
- 11:35Speaker 2: Somebody sent me the video and I just like they're
- 11:38Speaker 2: sending it because I like Tyler. They know I love Tyler.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Who was dropping new song? So I was watching it
- 11:42Speaker 2: and then I heard him say my name and I
- 11:44Speaker 2: was like, whoa, this is cool. I went to his festival,
- 11:47Speaker 2: went to his shows. I remember I brought my parents
- 11:50Speaker 2: in one of his shows and they didn't get how
- 11:52Speaker 2: a dude in a blonde wig was selling out masses.
- 11:56Speaker 2: And then yeah, he dropped me this song and then
- 11:59Speaker 2: I got to meet him that after Miami Open, I
- 12:01Speaker 2: went to his concert and he got to meet up backstage.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I lost to him in a race actually was faster
- 12:06Speaker 2: than I thought, like on foot, Yeah, it was like
- 12:10Speaker 2: it was like barefoot, kind of like I didn't.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Listen to a concert.
- 12:15Speaker 3: I did, But when did you end up in a race?
- 12:17Speaker 5: Fasten?
- 12:17Speaker 1: And I thought that he kindly, so he randomly was like,
- 12:21Speaker 1: let's race.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and yeah, but you know we're gonna get
- 12:25Speaker 2: a rematch next time, so I'll come prepared.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Unbelievable, uh, Venus you, this crowd right here began to
- 12:35Speaker 1: form when you came over, and what you and your
- 12:39Speaker 1: sister did has been so incredible to change. And I
- 12:42Speaker 1: think this is a direct representation of that. Their talent obviously,
- 12:45Speaker 1: and who you are as people is who you are.
- 12:47Speaker 1: But what what does it mean to you when you
- 12:50Speaker 1: see someone like Coca, when you see someone like Sloan
- 12:53Speaker 1: and you think about your father and your mother and
- 12:55Speaker 1: your sister and the impact that you've had on this sport.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Yeah, the impact starts with mom and dad, right then
- 13:01Speaker 3: it affected Serena and I and then these ladies they
- 13:03Speaker 3: shine on their own. Of course, they're incredible, they're Grand
- 13:06Speaker 3: Slam champions. So I'm so proud that that lineage of
- 13:11Speaker 3: inspiration will continue and as a little girl I grew
- 13:14Speaker 3: up in Compton, I just wanted to I wanted to
- 13:16Speaker 3: be at this tournament. I wanted to win this tournament.
- 13:19Speaker 3: But then you realize so much more comes with it,
- 13:21Speaker 3: bigger than your dreams, better than your own dreams for yourself.
- 13:24Speaker 3: So it's fantastic. And you guys inspire me at the
- 13:27Speaker 3: end of the day too. And you guys have played
- 13:29Speaker 3: so well against me too. These two have beat me
- 13:33Speaker 3: and didn't care what it felt like. I was, is
- 13:39Speaker 3: this what I deserve?
- 13:41Speaker 1: This is actually a great moment.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Wait, it's like actually therapy right now.
- 13:44Speaker 2: You know when I played you, I just tried to
- 13:47Speaker 2: pretend that it wasn't you. I was like, I'm going
- 13:50Speaker 2: to pretend that it is somebody else because I can't
- 13:52Speaker 2: take this right now.
- 13:53Speaker 1: It's slow when you line up against Venus and she's thinking,
- 13:56Speaker 1: you don't care?
- 13:57Speaker 3: What was it like though? It was awful?
- 14:01Speaker 4: No, we's played here, And I was like, no, no, no, no, no,
- 14:04Speaker 4: can't be wrong, draws, it's not it wasn't me. And
- 14:06Speaker 4: I was like, oh my god, well.
- 14:08Speaker 3: That much okay, it sounds about right at the French
- 14:13Speaker 3: Open too.
- 14:14Speaker 4: Oh no, but it was it's very stressful anytime you
- 14:17Speaker 4: pull up.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Oh oh that's us, Oh that's us. We played here too,
- 14:21Speaker 2: We played here. We all just play here.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I got soap into Yeah, we are so cute, Kobe,
- 14:28Speaker 2: You're so small. I was fifteen. She is it a double?
- 14:34Speaker 2: I broke a racket this match. Venus is like she
- 14:37Speaker 2: did that because she had to. That's what she told
- 14:39Speaker 2: the rest.
- 14:44Speaker 1: But it was a feeling afterwards when you get the
