Speaker 3: Yeah it's the office, it's his office.
• 1:34
Speaker 5: All right, huh, can you hear me good?

Speaker 5: Yeah, I hear you good.

  Speaker 1: Can you hear?
• 1:40
  Speaker 4: us.
• 1:40
Speaker 4: Good, this is his office and I'm here, I have on pants.
• 1:44
Speaker 1: You know, have you ever spoken to us from your home?
• 1:46
  Speaker 1: I don't believe so.
• 1:48
Speaker 4: He's always working location and if I, if I did speak to you from my home, um, let's say that I did okay, whatever you, whatever makes it right, and work for you where you don't care how are you?
• 2:06
Speaker 4: I appreciate you guys always inviting me on through the years.
• 2:09
Speaker 4: I'll let you in on a little secret.
• 2:13
Speaker 4: You know when, of course, Brother Mark's giving me a call and we set this up.
• 2:17
Speaker 4: We never talk about a topic, I just bring something up.
• 2:20
Speaker 4: But you talked about that eclipse.
• 2:23
Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm telling you that's a big, believe it or not, that's a big topic right now.
• 2:38
Speaker 1: Well, let me just say this that I heard through the televisionup warning over a month ago that apparently that TxDOT put out that said there is going to be a massive traffic jam between Houston and the Hill Country.
• 2:55
Speaker 1: Did you hear that?
• 2:57
Speaker 4: I'm telling you right now it's looking that way.
• 3:01
  Speaker 4: So look.
• 3:03
Speaker 4: So, as DPS, txdot has all the traffic mitigation plans in place, but as we DPS, we get ready for this thing.
• 3:12
Speaker 4: We're talking about 83 counties that could be affected.
• 3:17
Speaker 4: We're looking at an upward of about 1.1 million folks coming to view Anywhere between.
• 3:26
Speaker 4: This thing's supposed to take place anywhere between the time of 1.30 and 1.50 pm on Monday, so we're doing everything we need to do for traffic control to make sure individuals enjoy their Eclipse experience.
• 3:41
Speaker 1: Well, I have not, I have not their.
• 3:43
  Speaker 2: Eclipse experience.
• 3:44
Speaker 2: I like that Gotcha.
• 3:47
Speaker 1: It's almost like you're trying to sell the thing.
• 3:50
  Speaker 4: I like it.
• 3:51
  Speaker 4: I like it.
• 3:52
Speaker 4: Well, I have to look.
• 3:53
Speaker 4: Look, when I'm on in real time, I have to change my style a little bit.
• 3:57
Speaker 4: This is a professional show isn't it?
• 3:59
  Speaker 1: No, it's not.
• 4:00
Speaker 1: This is not professional at all.
• 4:03
Speaker 3: You're the only professional here.
• 4:05
  Speaker 3: No.
• 4:09
Speaker 1: Last time I looked at the forecast, which was a couple of days ago, that there was a pretty good chance of rain and a lot of cloud cover here, so you're not going to see much except the lights going dim.
• 4:20
Speaker 1: Well, for me personally, I see the lights going dim all the time depending on where I am and what I'm doing.
• 4:26
Speaker 1: But I will say this that if that's the case and there's a chance of rain or a lot of cloud cover, you're not going to be able to see the eclipse directly.
• 4:35
Speaker 1: And I have a feeling, if that's the case, there's going to be a lot of people heading toward the hill country, probably tomorrow, if not monday morning, to go see this thing and where they're going to stay, because all the hotels are full.
• 4:49
Speaker 4: Yeah, park on the side of the road and we're thinking about all those small little towns that can't, uh, really service the visitors.
• 4:58
Speaker 4: So it's going to be interesting.
• 4:59
Speaker 4: What we're telling folks is know, if you are going to enjoy the experience, obviously drive with safety.
• 5:07
Speaker 4: Don't stop in the lane of traffic, because we want to keep traffic flowing.
• 5:12
Speaker 4: Obviously, if visibility is reduced by a thousand feet, we need you to put your headlights on.
• 5:20
Speaker 4: We're expecting to see larger numbers in all series, so we're assisting these small towns that have a very small number in law enforcement personnel with traffic mitigation.
• 5:33
Speaker 4: We're telling folks, you know, of course, keep your tanks full, have you some water and supplies on hand, because you never know what may happen.
• 5:42
Speaker 4: Just in yesterday they were telling us to advise the public, to make sure that you inform your family and others of your location, because of the cell phone towers, they may get overwhelmed.
• 5:56
Speaker 4: So I mean this is just one of those things that I mean we've been here before, but again we want people to enjoy it safely.
• 6:03
Speaker 4: Hey, we've been here before, but again we want people to enjoy it safely.
• 6:05
Speaker 4: Hey, defense will be out.
• 6:06
Speaker 4: I don't care which four corners of the state, even sometimes out of state, where the problem is, we will be.
• 6:13
Speaker 4: So that's just part of being a state policeman.
• 6:17
Speaker 4: Again, we want folks to enjoy this.
• 6:19
Speaker 1: Steve, I have to tell you that what this reminds me of, from the forecasts that roads are going to be jammed up, I think it was Hurricane Rita.
• 6:29
Speaker 1: For years ago this was probably in the let's see about 2005 or so somewhere in there and there was an evacuation order for Houston.
• 6:44
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, gosh, what an absolute nightmare.
• 6:47
  Speaker 1: You remember it.
• 6:49
Speaker 1: People were jammed up, not moving on i-10, the katie freeway, trying to get to the hill country.
• 6:56
Speaker 1: It can only handle so many cars and let's not forget that ongoing death trap out there by brookshire where all that construction is going on, where traffic is down to two lanes.
• 7:07
Speaker 1: It's a nightmare 290 jammed up all the way.
• 7:11
Speaker 1: I don't know about 59, but everybody was trying to go west, go, go away from the coast, because they didn't know exactly where it was.
• 7:18
Speaker 1: It turned out it went over to beaumont area, but I can remember, uh, my wife and had two girls and the dog in the car.
• 7:26
Speaker 1: They got stuck out in that and the thought that they had left in enough time early on, but they got stuck and it was jammed up.
• 7:35
Speaker 1: Cars stalled everywhere, people had no place to go to the bathroom, they had no water, ran out of gas, it was.
• 7:42
  Speaker 1: It was bad.
• 7:43
Speaker 1: So one of the things that we pulled off the Internet, steve, was you know, take an emergency kit with you in case you get stuck in traffic and can't find a place to stay Water, nonperishable food, flashlight, battery-powered radio.
• 7:59
Speaker 1: I know this sounds just like a hurricane.
• 8:01
  Speaker 1: Yeah, it is.
• 8:02
Speaker 1: But you know these kinds of things are important when you get out there and you get into that situation steve, check the weather forecast, time and plan accordingly.
• 8:13
Speaker 1: Keep your gas tank full, let someone know where you're going, what you said, and pick an easy uh easy to remember meeting location.
• 8:21
Speaker 1: If you get separated say you went with the neighbors, or two or three of you are going to go together in separate cars Find a place where you all can get together.
• 8:29
Speaker 1: You know all of those roadside places.
• 8:31
Speaker 1: You know they're all going to be jam-packed.
• 8:34
Speaker 1: And the funny thing about it to me is that you know here in Houston, from what I understand and I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination that we're going to see an 80% eclipse here.
• 8:44
Speaker 1: I'm good with that.
• 8:46
  Speaker 1: I don't know about you, but I can do 80%.
• 8:50
Speaker 4: Well, I know one guy that's not going to be going to the guilt country.
• 8:53
Speaker 4: His name is Don.
• 8:54
Speaker 1: That's exactly right, brother, I'm going to be right here yeah.
• 8:58
Speaker 4: So well, we hope everybody enjoyed.
• 9:00
Speaker 4: Hey, we'll be out there.
• 9:01
Speaker 4: I've got to ask you guys a question.
• 9:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, Is it illegal to pop a wheelie with a motorcycle on a roadway?
• 9:09
Speaker 2: Oh, I was thinking about a 67 Camaro when he said that To pop a wheelie on a motorcycle on a road.
• 9:16
Speaker 1: I guess I would think that it would be, I don't know, lack of control.
• 9:22
Speaker 1: What kind of ticket would you get for that?
• 9:24
  Speaker 4: Well, it's not no-transcript.
• 9:28
Speaker 4: Yeah, as long as it's done safely.
• 9:29
Speaker 4: You know, we have some really really interesting laws when it comes to vehicles other than you know your automobile, like your passenger vehicle and your pickup truck.
• 9:39
Speaker 4: So obviously we added the new law that you can't lane split and there's a code for that specifically.
• 9:47
Speaker 4: But when we talk about these ATVs, these ATVs, these four-wheeler individuals operating these four-wheeler on city streets, roadways, there's some instances where individuals are seeing these four-wheelers on the interstate, on 610.
• 10:02
Speaker 4: You can't do it.
• 10:04
Speaker 4: You cannot operate an ATV or an off-highway vehicle on the roadway unless it's approved by the city, the county, if it's in an agricultural sort of operation or if it's law enforcement.
• 10:18
Speaker 4: So we tell folks, you know again, as the summer starts to creep up on us, be mindful of that off-highway vehicle, because, number one, it's not regulated for safety vehicle.
• 10:34
Speaker 4: Because, number one, it's not regulated for safety and two, it is illegal in some circumstances to operate on the roadway and two things.
• 10:38
Speaker 3: You did that segment on a news station recently, what we talked about, what you're talking about there, and you went in-depth on that, from A to Z, on the do's and the don'ts and the whys of it.
• 10:48
Speaker 3: Also, april is National Defensive Driving Month.
• 10:53
Speaker 4: Yes, sir, it is.
• 10:54
Speaker 4: It is and that's why I tied that up and it's important.
• 10:58
Speaker 4: It's becoming a problem, obviously in the big city lights of Houston and we DPS we're trying to help out our Houston friends.
• 11:06
Speaker 4: We come in once a month for about a week's time to help them try to mitigate some of this aggressive driving.
• 11:13
Speaker 4: I'm going to tell you, don and you know this better than everybody that's on, we try to work together if we can as a law enforcement agency to try to make the roadway safe for everybody at hand.
• 11:26
Speaker 4: Look, fellas, there's over 78,000 law enforcement agencies in Texas and I'll tell you 80-plus are right in Harris County and we're one of them.
• 11:36
Speaker 4: If we all can work together, it'll make that travel from point A to B and back to A a lot safer.
• 11:42
Speaker 1: You know, steve, I did want to mention one thing.
• 11:44
Speaker 1: You know I travel the Beltway a lot.
• 11:47
Speaker 1: That's my commuting way to go from Sugar Land over to a hobby airport.
• 11:52
Speaker 1: And what I don't understand is guys that are doing 90 miles an hour.
• 12:00
Speaker 1: If everybody did 90, okay, I got it.
• 12:03
Speaker 1: But do people not understand the closing rate?
• 12:06
Speaker 1: When you're doing 90 as opposed to doing 70?
• 12:10
Speaker 1: That's 20 miles an hour, man.
• 12:11
Speaker 1: You 70, that's 20 miles an hour man.
• 12:13
Speaker 1: You can kill somebody at 20 miles an hour.
• 12:15
  Speaker 1: That's a proven fact.
• 12:17
Speaker 1: And to have a closing rate on another car that's ahead of you, that's doing 70, already breaking the speed limit of 65, that's doing 70,.
• 12:26
Speaker 1: You're not going to get stopped.
• 12:27
Speaker 1: You're, generally speaking, for doing 70 on the tollway, but doing 90, it's scary because that car is coming up behind you so fast that if you look behind him, use your mirrors, look behind you and you see that car back there.
• 12:45
Speaker 1: I've got time to pull out in front of him.
• 12:47
Speaker 1: No, he's coming on you at 20 miles an hour, faster than you're going.
• 12:51
Speaker 1: You don't realize that you're pulling out in front of a car, you get rear-ended, cause a huge wreck, and I see it all the time.
• 12:59
  Speaker 1: It's truly amazing.
• 13:01
Speaker 1: I don't understand what's the purpose of doing that.
• 13:04
  Speaker 4: There's none.
• 13:05
Speaker 4: I'm speaking with a trucking company.
• 13:07
Speaker 4: All right, a trucking convention today, outside of El Campo and one of the blocks.
• 13:13
Speaker 4: We're going to talk about speed to those guys driving big trucks on how to, number one, be mindful of your speed.
• 13:19
Speaker 4: We rarely get truck drivers driving at an egregious speed, but our message to them is try to help these individuals help themselves.
• 13:28
Speaker 4: Speed kills and it's one of the number one.
• 13:32
Speaker 4: It's the number one contributing factor to our crashes.
• 13:34
Speaker 4: So again, all of us working together with enforcement, education which you allow me to do here and people talking at the dinner table, I think we'll be able to save lives.
• 13:45
Speaker 4: I'm going to tell you something, don, you're right on it.
• 13:48
Speaker 4: What I'm going to do offline.
• 13:50
Speaker 4: Text me your address.
• 13:52
Speaker 4: I'll get you a DPS uniform and have you ready to do it.
• 13:56
Speaker 2: No, don't do that, because he's going to have us patted down every day He'd be one of those guys like on Reno yeah, the short yeah that'd be him, but we can only give him one bullet that he's got to keep in his top pocket like Barney.
• 14:13
Speaker 1: They're going to bite Barney, yeah, I mean, you know, I'll tell you what man I'm not.
• 14:19
Speaker 1: I hate it when people say are you driving too fast?
• 14:23
Speaker 1: No, I mean, I like driving fast, we all like driving fast, Absolutely.
• 14:27
Speaker 1: I went to the last time I had to take a defensive driving course.
• 14:34
Speaker 1: The guy said look, think of it this way If you're going 20 miles over the speed limit, how much faster are you going to get to your destination?
• 14:44
Speaker 1: Really, If you're going to go 20 miles right and you're going to do 60 miles an hour, how much sooner are you going to get there?
• 14:53
Speaker 1: Really, Not much sooner.
• 14:56
Speaker 2: No, a couple of minutes maybe.
• 14:57
Speaker 2: It's 111 miles every Saturday morning, one way For you, for me, and the difference between driving 65 out there on Interstate 10, where it is people passing you doing 90, and driving 75 is maybe five minutes at the most at the most yeah, across that distance and around town it's nothing.
• 15:18
Speaker 1: And then you do that speed and you just get to the traffic light quicker and then you catch up to those people that pass the construction exactly, or the stop sign yeah, I, you know, to endanger everybody else's life, doing 90 miles an hour in a 65 mile an hour zone just doesn't, I mean, god knows.
• 15:35
Speaker 1: I think all of us have done that probably at some point in our lives.
• 15:39
Speaker 1: I got that, not me.
• 15:41
  Speaker 1: No, liar.
• 15:43
  Speaker 1: No, you haven't.
• 15:44
  Speaker 1: You've done it.
• 15:44
Speaker 1: 110 miles an hour is what you've done.
• 15:47
Speaker 3: I think the next time Steve is on he ought to pull our traffic records.
• 15:51
  Speaker 2: Do that.
• 15:51
Speaker 2: I don't think he ought to do that.
• 15:54
Speaker 4: I don't think he ought to do that.
• 15:55
Speaker 4: I'll leave you with this If everybody is in your way, everybody's driving slow and everybody's in your way and you're trying to get somewhere, the answer to that equation is you're late.
• 16:09
  Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, steven.
• 16:12
Speaker 1: It's always good to talk to you, my friend.
• 16:15
Speaker 4: How are the boys?
• 16:16
  Speaker 4: They're doing good.
• 16:17
  Speaker 4: They're doing good.
• 16:18
Speaker 4: When I left the house, everybody was still asleep, so you know how they go.
• 16:21
Speaker 2: Yeah, yes we do Saturday morning.
• 16:23
Speaker 1: Yeah, well, it's great to talk to you, great to see you.
• 16:27
Speaker 1: I like to see you in this role, as opposed to flying overhead in some horrible traffic accident or whatever it is that you're involved with that.
• 16:35
Speaker 1: You know investigation and so it's good to see you and you take care of yourself, be safe.
• 16:41
  Speaker 4: Thank you.
• 16:43
Speaker 1: You bet Stephen Woodard.
• 16:45
Speaker 3: That's Sergeant Stephen Woodard.
• 16:47
  Speaker 1: He's got a nice office.
• 16:49
Speaker 1: He does, like I say it's always fun.
• 16:57
Speaker 1: Actually, when I saw him out there at the office, we landed there one day for whatever reason, and we landed there in the helipad and I said, got out of the helicopter and there's this guy, and it was Stephen Woodard, walking across, coming over to the helicopter division, and I said Stephen Woodard, he looked around, Don, is that you?
• 17:12
Speaker 1: I said Stephen Woodard, he looked around, don, is that you?
• 17:14
Speaker 1: I said yeah, we're here, but he didn't invite me into his office.
• 17:18
Speaker 3: Oh, no, no, I wouldn't either.
• 17:20
Speaker 3: I wouldn't either, probably have to frisk you.
• 17:22
Speaker 1: Yeah, we hung out with the DPS guys for a while over there one day.
• 17:25
  Speaker 1: That's cool.
• 17:26
Speaker 1: Yeah, it was cool, all right.
• 17:27
Speaker 1: All right, what do you want to do?
• 17:29
Speaker 1: You want to do the racing calendar?
• 17:30
Speaker 3: We can, we can.
• 17:31
  Speaker 3: I got that.
• 17:32
Speaker 3: There's really just a couple of things going on in the racing you got.
• 17:37
Speaker 3: Nhra, which was qualifying, was yesterday.
• 17:39
Speaker 3: They did a rebroadcast last night and it was delayed because of the truck race.
• 17:43
Speaker 1: Well, and the NHRA race also.
• 17:45
Speaker 1: They only did the fuel cars, they didn't do pro stock.
• 17:49
Speaker 1: And so, Erica, they're going to run three qualifying sessions.
• 17:55
Speaker 3: Right, and it's going to be.
• 17:56
Speaker 3: The second round is going to be the finish of last week's or two weeks ago's race.
• 18:01
Speaker 1: They've got a lot to do.
• 18:02
Speaker 3: But anyways, that's today.
• 18:03
Speaker 3: It's the NHRA Arizona Nationals, it's in Phoenix Arizona, 6.30pm it is on FS1.
• 18:11
Speaker 3: Then you've got NASCAR, which is tomorrow.
• 18:14
Speaker 3: I'm sure there's practice and all the other smaller events going on Ancillary events?
• 18:18
Speaker 3: Yes, that's tomorrow at 3 pm.
• 18:20
Speaker 3: In Martinsville they ran the truck race last night.
• 18:23
Speaker 3: A lot of crashes, a lot of short track stuff.
• 18:24
Speaker 3: Tickets are available, Mike, in case you want to go.
• 18:26
Speaker 3: That's on this one also.
• 18:28
Speaker 3: The other events are kind of delayed.
• 18:30
Speaker 3: They're in the hiatus week, so to speak.
• 18:33
Speaker 3: So those are the only two going on.
• 18:35
Speaker 3: Well, we've got Formula One, but eh, Formula One.
• 18:40
  Speaker 1: That's great.
• 18:41
Speaker 1: I like the way you do.
• 18:42
Speaker 1: They just kind of blow it off.
• 18:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know they're fast cars, so you've got to talk about them fast.
• 18:47
Speaker 3: There's so much drama.
• 18:48
Speaker 3: You know, put your purse down and race the car.
• 18:51
  Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying.
• 18:55
  Speaker 1: Can I quote?
• 18:56
Speaker 5: you on that Do it.
• 18:57
Speaker 1: You know we're going to use that somewhere along the line.
• 18:59
Speaker 1: Put your purse down and drive and drive, shut up and drive there you go.
• 19:04
Speaker 2: No, no, that's not the same as put your purse down and drive.
• 19:07
Speaker 1: It's not so much.
• 19:09
Speaker 1: Take your Ferragamo's off in the pit.
