- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is wholehearted, becoming healthier Christians
- 0:30at work.
- 0:32We ended our last episode on the real
- 0:34downer of Dallas Willard's description of addiction as
- 0:38being imprisoned by desire and our need for
- 0:42freedom.
- 0:43So I wanted to share a freedom story.
- 0:46This is from Ryan N.
- 0:47He's sharing anonymously, as sometimes is done in
- 0:49different recovery groups.
- 0:52So I'll just read this from a blog
- 0:53post he gave on the Heroes in Recovery
- 0:56website.
- 0:57And just a heads up, Ryan uses a
- 1:00swear word in here, and I'm just going
- 1:01to read it the way he did it.
- 1:03So if any parents are listening to this
- 1:05with kids, maybe fast forward this little part
- 1:07of the story.
- 1:09But I actually think it's an appropriate deployment
- 1:11of the swear word, because it's about damnation
- 1:15and how that is where we had when
- 1:18we're in really destructive cycles.
- 1:19Okay, so let me read what Ryan shares.
- 1:23On the morning of December 9, 2015, after
- 1:26a long night of drinking and smoking weed
- 1:27with coworkers, I said, enough is enough.
- 1:30It's a morning I'll never forget, because I
- 1:33called my mom and told her I was
- 1:34done drinking.
- 1:36We talked for a little and she told
- 1:38me I'm proud of you.
- 1:40She had heard me say I was done
- 1:41drinking before, but that time felt different.
- 1:45Ironically, my dad called two hours later and
- 1:47we talked for a bit.
- 1:48I was hesitant to tell him that I
- 1:50was done drinking, because I didn't want to
- 1:52get too far ahead of myself.
- 1:54But I did at the end of our
- 1:55phone call.
- 1:56He said the words too, I'm proud of
- 1:59you.
- 2:01Everyone knows you want to make your parents
- 2:02proud.
- 2:03And damn, was that a forever moment for
- 2:05me.
- 2:06I have always wanted way more out of
- 2:08life than what most others want out of
- 2:10their lives.
- 2:11And for me, being completely sober is part
- 2:14of getting the most out of life.
- 2:18I love Ryan's vulnerability.
- 2:20Vulnerability is a big part of recovery, which
- 2:22we'll talk about in just a moment.
- 2:24But also, do you see the elements of
- 2:27what we've already talked about related to addiction
- 2:29in his story?
- 2:30He said enough is enough.
- 2:33He had to make a resolute decision.
- 2:36He had to exercise his will in order
- 2:38to say, I need to make a change.
- 2:40Right.
- 2:41But then what did he do?
- 2:42He engaged relationships.
- 2:44He started looking for what are healthy ways
- 2:46for me to connect.
- 2:48He says, everyone knows you want to make
- 2:49your parents proud.
- 2:50He's speaking to a good social need of
- 2:53the human person.
- 2:55And he's saying, okay, I'm going to engage
- 2:56that in a healthy way, calling my mom,
- 2:58talking with my dad.
- 2:59And thankfully, they were able to provide a
- 3:01healthy response of telling him that they were
- 3:04proud of him in that moment.
- 3:05Obviously, not every family relationship would that be
- 3:09what you would receive from your parents.
- 3:11But someone is out there who can say,
- 3:14I'm proud of you to you if you're
- 3:16in this process of recovery.
- 3:19And then also just that that final little
- 3:21note where he says, I have always wanted
- 3:24way more out of my life than what
- 3:27most others want out of their lives.
- 3:28He's driven by desire.
- 3:30He's driven by a desire for life.
- 3:33He's like this, this, this addiction, this cycle
- 3:35of marijuana and alcohol and other things.
- 3:37It's, it's not giving me life and I
- 3:39want life.
- 3:40And so I'm going to go find where
- 3:41life really is.
- 3:43This is beautiful.
- 3:44This is a beautiful story.
- 3:46Now I intentionally chose a story.
- 3:48As far as I know, Ryan at this
- 3:50point in the story was not a committed
- 3:51follower of Jesus.
- 3:52In his blog post, he didn't recount any
- 3:54sort of conversion experience, which might be kind
- 3:57of odd, like the more stereotypical thing for
- 3:59someone like me who's teaching from the Bible
- 4:01to do would be like, here's a story
- 4:03of somebody who found Jesus and then recovered
- 4:04from their addiction.
- 4:06So why do I share a different story?
- 4:08A couple reasons.
- 4:09One is that I think it's really important
- 4:11for us as followers of Jesus to see
- 4:14how broad common grace is.
- 4:17So common grace is this idea that God
- 4:19has a very special kind of grace in
- 4:21Jesus Christ.
- 4:22That's the grace that saves us when we
- 4:24put our faith in Jesus, when we're baptized,
- 4:26when we begin following him, we come into
- 4:29the kingdom of God, we become alive to
- 4:31God.
- 4:31But he also has a lot of grace
- 4:33that's just in common.
- 4:34It's for everybody.
- 4:35So like when Jesus says, God sends his
- 4:37reign on both the righteous and the unrighteous,
- 4:40he's talking about God's character and how God
- 4:41loves and does good for everybody, regardless of
- 4:44whether they acknowledge him.
- 4:45That's common grace, the gift of God, the
- 4:48goodness of God for everybody.
- 4:50And part of that is recovery can be
- 4:53a real experience for people, even if they
- 4:55don't come to specific faith in Jesus Christ.
- 4:59And so that's important for us to acknowledge
- 5:00how broad common grace is, that even the
- 5:03process of addiction recovery is available outside of
- 5:06specific conscious faith in Jesus.
- 5:09But I also want to emphasize it because
- 5:11out of all people, Christians have the most
- 5:15reason to embrace a recovery mindset, right?
- 5:19So in this story, Ryan was embracing a
- 5:21recovery mindset.
- 5:22He's like, I want to find out where
- 5:23life really is.
- 5:25The claim of the Bible is, well, ultimately
- 5:27where life really is, is in God.
- 5:30Ryan didn't get to that point necessarily in
- 5:32this part of his story.
- 5:33But those of us who believe that there's
- 5:35a good God who gives life, those of
- 5:37us who are Christians who believe that life
- 5:39is revealed in Jesus Christ, we have the
- 5:41most reason out of all people to embrace
- 5:43a recovery mindset.
- 5:45Because we believe there is a source of
- 5:47life out there that is worth engaging in
- 5:50the process of recovery to reach.
- 5:52It is worth it to abandon these things
- 5:54that do not give life because real life
- 5:56really is out there.
- 5:59Okay, so what do I mean by recovery
- 6:02mindset?
- 6:03Ryan's story is an example of somebody engaged
- 6:05in recovery.
- 6:06I want to give just a simple phrase
- 6:08that I think gives a recovery mindset.
- 6:12Admitting and committing to radical change.
- 6:17Admitting and committing to radical change.
- 6:19So four words there.
- 6:21Okay, so first admitting.
- 6:23This in a 12-step program, the first
- 6:25step is to acknowledge how deep the problem
- 6:28is, to admit it.
- 6:30And so I want to go to a
- 6:31scripture passage that's going to kind of help
- 6:33us walk through what is this process of
- 6:35admitting and change look like.
- 6:37This is Psalm 51, not in the context
- 6:39of addiction, but in the context of very
- 6:41serious sin.
- 6:42David, the writer of the psalm, had committed
- 6:44murder, had committed adultery, he had abused his
- 6:47power politically, a lot of bad things, and
- 6:50he comes to a place of very genuine
- 6:52contrition and believing he needs help, and he
- 6:55needs to acknowledge just how bad everything he's
- 6:57done is.
- 6:58He's not going to tell himself that story
- 7:00of, I'll quit tomorrow anymore.
- 7:03He's going to say it how it is.
- 7:05So this is in verse three.
- 7:06Hear how David is admitting.
- 7:08For I know my transgressions and my sin
- 7:11is ever before me.
- 7:12Against you, you only have I sinned and
- 7:16done what is evil in your sight, so
- 7:18that you may be justified in your words
- 7:20and blameless in your judgment.
- 7:25David's looking at God and saying, I have
- 7:27done wrong, and if you judge me and
- 7:29say that I've done wrong, you're right, you're
- 7:32justified, I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
- 7:35This is incredibly antithetical to almost everything that's
- 7:38built up in our American culture.
- 7:41People are terrible at admitting that they're wrong.
- 7:43Have you ever read an apology from a
- 7:45public figure?
- 7:46So often, it's not an apology at all.
- 7:48People just do not have it in them
- 7:49to say, I was wrong.
- 7:51They just don't have everything against us, just
- 7:53rebels against that.
- 7:55I think there's a lot in our culture
- 7:57that reinforces that, like a sense of, I
- 8:00am the ultimate authority, I'm not responsible to
- 8:02anyone else, I choose my own way.
- 8:05Versus in this picture that we're given in
- 8:07Scripture, God is the ultimate authority.
- 8:09God will judge.
- 8:10That's very clear in the Bible, and so
- 8:12when we do something wrong, we are accountable
- 8:13to Him.
- 8:15Part of recovery, the first part of recovery,
- 8:17is admitting how bad the problem is, taking
- 8:21responsibility, saying, this is beyond me, I need
- 8:25help, this is wrong, I'm admitting it.
- 8:29Admitting how destructive my disorder is.
- 8:32That's the first step.
- 8:33Then, committing.
- 8:35This is what Ryan did.
- 8:36He exercised his will.
- 8:38He said, enough is enough.
- 8:39You engage your will, you commit to radical
- 8:42change.
- 8:43We'll get onto radical and change in a
- 8:45second here, but just first this part of
- 8:46committing, of engaging the will.
- 8:50We see this in Psalm 51.
- 8:52This is starting in verse 12.
- 8:55Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
- 8:58and uphold me with a willing spirit.
- 9:00Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and
- 9:03sinners will return to you.
- 9:05Deliver me from blood guiltiness, O God, O
- 9:08God of my salvation, and my tongue will
- 9:10sing aloud of your righteousness.
- 9:13O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth
- 9:15will declare your praise.
- 9:17For you will not delight in sacrifice, or
- 9:19I would give it.
- 9:20You will not be pleased with a burnt
- 9:22offering.
- 9:23The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit,
- 9:26a broken and contrite heart, O God.
- 9:29You will not despise.
- 9:31Do you hear how David's saying, I'm going
- 9:33to do whatever it takes.
- 9:34If it took sacrifice, that's what I would
- 9:37give.
- 9:38But I know that it actually takes a
- 9:40broken spirit.
- 9:41His spirit is broken.
- 9:43He's admitting it, and now he's committing.
- 9:45He says, restore to me the joy of
- 9:47your salvation, and uphold me with a willing
- 9:49spirit.
- 9:50He's saying, I need help to keep choosing
- 9:52this, but I am choosing this.
- 9:54Then he says, then I will teach transgressors
- 9:56your ways, and sinners will return to you.
- 9:58There's a long-term process that he's stepping
- 10:01into resolutely and saying, this is the way
- 10:04for me.
- 10:04He is committing.
- 10:06Okay, now then what is he committing to?
- 10:07He's committing to radical change.
- 10:10Now use that word radical intentionally, not just
- 10:12to have it be like a big, beefy
- 10:14exclamation point word, but the word radical in
- 10:17English actually means root.
- 10:19It's a root change.
- 10:21How do we change what's at the source,
- 10:23at the root of this problem?
- 10:25How do we dig those roots up and
- 10:27plant something different in their place?
- 10:30Well, this is what David gets at in
- 10:32the center of the Psalm.
- 10:34This idea that the change needs to go
- 10:35to the core of who we are.
- 10:37So this is verses seven through 11.
- 10:40Purge me with hyssop and I shall be
- 10:41clean.
- 10:42Wash me and I shall be whiter than
- 10:44snow.
- 10:45Let me hear joy and gladness.
- 10:47Let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
- 10:51Hide your face from my sins and blot
- 10:53out my iniquities.
- 10:55Create in me a clean heart, O God,
- 10:58and renew a right spirit within me.
- 11:01Cast me not away from your presence and
- 11:04take not your Holy Spirit from me.
- 11:08At the center of this passage, he says,
- 11:11create in me a clean heart, O God,
- 11:15and renew a right spirit within me.
- 11:20He's saying, I need to change from the
- 11:22inside out.
- 11:22This is not ultimately about changing behavior, although
- 11:27behavior will change.
- 11:28It's ultimately about changing who we are as
- 11:30human beings from the inside out.
- 11:34And then how does that change occur?
- 11:37Well, it occurs by the presence of God,
- 11:40right?
- 11:40Right after that clean heart and right spirit,
- 11:43David says, cast me not away from your
- 11:45presence and take not your Holy Spirit from
- 11:49me.
- 11:50We need God to dwell in us, in
- 11:52our bodies, in our whole beings, by his
- 11:56Holy Spirit.
- 11:58And when he does, when we dwell in
- 12:00his presence like that in union with him
- 12:02through Jesus Christ, it becomes possible for that
- 12:07change to really be radical, becomes possible for
- 12:10the change to be thorough, long, progressive, and
- 12:15real.
- 12:17And we see this in the teaching of
- 12:18Jesus as well.
- 12:19So flipping ahead to the New Testament, John
- 12:22chapter seven, starting in verse 37.
- 12:25This is one of Jesus's key descriptions about
- 12:28himself.
- 12:29On the last day of the feast, the
- 12:30great day, Jesus stood up and cried out,
- 12:34if anyone thirsts, let him come to me
- 12:36and drink.
- 12:37Whoever believes in me, as the scripture has
- 12:40said, out of his heart will flow rivers
- 12:42of living water.
- 12:45Now this he said about the spirit, whom
- 12:48those who believed in him were to receive.
- 12:51So again, just like David said, it's about
- 12:54God's presence.
- 12:55It's about the Holy Spirit not being taken
- 12:57from us.
- 12:58Jesus says, whoever believes in me, out of
- 13:01his heart will flow rivers of living water.
- 13:04And that means the spirit.
- 13:06God gets into our heart level, puts his
- 13:09spirit there, and transforms us so that living
- 13:11water flows out of us.
- 13:13So we're capable of living with him, being
- 13:17alive, and feeling alive.
- 13:21Now, feeling alive, that goes up and down.
- 13:24Sometimes we don't feel alive.
- 13:25That's a different talk.
- 13:27But that true transformation is real.
- 13:30We need the presence of God more than
- 13:32we need anything else.
- 13:35And when we come to the place of
- 13:36realizing that we need the presence of God
- 13:38more than we need anything else, then the
- 13:41power of addiction is broken.
- 13:44Then we are no longer dominated by desire.
- 13:48Again, this is just another way, kind of
- 13:50stepping back to our theological anthropology, soul as
- 13:54receiver.
- 13:55You are designed to receive the presence of
- 13:59God in your deepest being.
- 14:03You have a soul.
- 14:05It needs God.
- 14:07You have a body.
- 14:08It needs God.
- 14:10You have a mind.
- 14:12It needs God.
- 14:14Your whole being is meant to be suffused
- 14:17with the presence of God inside all the
- 14:21way out.
- 14:23Another way of thinking about this.
- 14:25When you have a life source that's really
- 14:28good, less attractive life sources are not a
- 14:32problem.
- 14:33And this is something, like even with our
- 14:34hydration example on Drinking Mountain Dew, people talk
- 14:36about this.
- 14:36You stop drinking soda pop and you start
- 14:38drinking water and you start eating healthy.
- 14:40And then eventually it gets to the point
- 14:41where you look at the soda pop and
- 14:42you're like, why did I ever drink that?
- 14:43That's not even attractive because you've actually found
- 14:46a way to meet the drives in your
- 14:48body more substantively.
- 14:50And so the power of the false God,
- 14:53so to speak, the power of the object
- 14:54of addiction is completely broken because you have
- 14:58what you need already.
- 14:59You're already good to go.
- 15:01So I'm paraphrasing Dallas Willard here.
- 15:04He, in that same talk we referenced in
- 15:05our last episode, he said that to get
- 15:07free from addiction, you have to become the
- 15:09kind of person who sees the object of
- 15:11addiction as unattractive.
- 15:14So what does that mean?
- 15:15Well, let me read a little bit more
- 15:16from Dallas here.
- 15:17Many Christians think it's impossible for sin to
- 15:20become unattractive.
- 15:21They've tried to overcome sin by sheer force
- 15:23of their will and can't.
- 15:25Willpower is not enough.
- 15:27It never is.
- 15:28The only function of your will is to
- 15:30bring you to the point of trusting God,
- 15:32relying on Him and living there.
- 15:38So there are some addiction recovery programs out
- 15:41there, even Christian ones, that are so focused
- 15:43on behavior, so focused on like, what would
- 15:45Jesus do?
- 15:46Just choose to do the right thing.
- 15:47They put the whole weight of recovery on
- 15:48somebody's will.
- 15:49That will never work because our will is
- 15:51not strong enough.
- 15:52The point of exercising our will, of making
- 15:54that resolute commitment to radical change, is to
- 15:58enter the presence of God and let His
- 16:01life rework us in terms of our emotional
- 16:05needs, our biological needs, all of our needs,
- 16:07so that then sin looks unattractive.
- 16:11The booze, the pornography, the heroin, whatever it
- 16:15is, you look at it, and you're like,
- 16:16why did I ever want that?
- 16:18Because I have what I need in the
- 16:20presence of God.
- 16:22Rivers of living water are flowing out of
- 16:24me.
- 16:26So what does this look like in practical
- 16:27terms?
- 16:28If you're in the throes of something right
- 16:30now and you really feel like you need
- 16:32help, there are great resources out there to
- 16:35help you get help.
- 16:36If you're not sure where to start, you
- 16:37can reach out to me.
- 16:38I can point you to different resources that
- 16:40are available online or elsewhere.
- 16:42If you're part of a faith community, I
- 16:45would encourage you to reach out and do
- 16:46a next step there.
- 16:48And so I think for all of us,
- 16:49whether we're in the throes of an addiction
- 16:50or we just know, hey, sometimes I have
- 16:52bad habits that need some work.
- 16:53We can follow this process of admitting and
- 16:57committing to radical change.
- 17:00Or we could say admitting and committing to
- 17:02receiving life.
- 17:04Radical change, receiving life.
- 17:06God is the true, deep, beautiful life source
- 17:09that we're looking for.
- 17:11So in practical terms, we just need to
- 17:13take our next step.
- 17:14So maybe your next step is just admitting.
- 17:17Again, whether it's a profound addiction or just
- 17:19a bad habit, do you need to admit
- 17:20that you have a problem?
- 17:22Are you scrolling too much on Instagram or
- 17:24Reddit?
- 17:25Are you shopping too much?
- 17:27Are you eating too much?
- 17:28Are you eating too little?
- 17:29That's kind of an inverse addiction.
- 17:32Can you admit that to someone safe in
- 17:34your life?
- 17:34This is the classic Christian discipline of confession.
- 17:37So if you can find a leader in
- 17:39your faith community who's a person of integrity,
- 17:42they could be a great person to confess
- 17:44to, to just admit, like, yeah, I have
- 17:46this problem, I need some help.
- 17:47Or it could be a friend, a counselor,
- 17:50a therapist, somebody can hear you and can
- 17:54listen well to that confession.
- 17:57Okay, so that's our first step is admitting.
- 17:59Maybe you're already there.
- 17:59Maybe you've already admitted you have a problem.
- 18:01Maybe you've been in the process of recovery
- 18:02for some time.
- 18:04Are you committing, right?
- 18:05Are you doing that step of committing to
- 18:07radical change?
- 18:09One way of seeing this is, are you
- 18:11willing to rearrange your life around recovery?
- 18:15Are you willing to invest time, effort, even
- 18:16money in your recovery process?
- 18:18If not, you probably haven't made that commitment.
- 18:21You're probably not taking it seriously.
- 18:23Especially if you do have what's truly an
- 18:25addiction, you need to rearrange your life around
- 18:27recovery.
- 18:28You need to make recovery your priority so
- 18:30that you don't fall into even deeper destruction
- 18:33because just like addiction is pervasive, it requires
- 18:37rearranging your whole life around recovery to get
- 18:39out of it.
- 18:40So if you haven't done that, you need
- 18:42to commit to change.
- 18:44Okay, then third thing, maybe you've already done
- 18:48that.
- 18:48You're like, no, no, Chris, I hear you,
- 18:50right?
- 18:50I'm in a 12-step group.
- 18:52I'm in a small group.
- 18:53I'm talking with my pastor.
- 18:54I'm praying with my buddies.
- 18:55I'm committed.
- 18:55I'm rearranging my life.
- 18:56I got it.
- 18:57Okay, then we're at the step of radical
- 18:59change, receiving life.
- 19:01Keep doing what you're doing one step at
- 19:04a time, welcoming God and the roots of
- 19:06your desires and needs.
- 19:09And this is always going to be a
- 19:10progressive and gradual process for all of us.
- 19:13Relapse is part of recovery.
- 19:15It's not a failure if you go back
- 19:16to that behavior.
- 19:18It's something that allows you to move forward
- 19:21and to learn more about yourself by God's
- 19:23grace over time.
- 19:25And the way that we welcome the presence
- 19:26of God are all the things we've talked
- 19:28about in this episode and other episodes, dwelling
- 19:31in Scripture, exercising your will and prayer, being
- 19:34vulnerable in community, just dwelling in the presence
- 19:37of God.
- 19:39And one other practice that some faith communities
- 19:42have access to is healing prayer.
- 19:45And if you're not familiar with this practice
- 19:48of healing prayer, you could learn a little
- 19:50bit about it online on the website of
- 19:52Christian Healing Ministries.
- 19:54So that's christianhealingmin.org, christianhealingmin.org.
- 20:01There's a couple named Francis and Judith McNutt
- 20:03who founded that ministry and have been leaders
- 20:06in a renewal of healing prayer in a
- 20:08way that I think is grounded in Scripture
- 20:09and faithful to Jesus.
- 20:11But you could ask your pastor or a
- 20:13different leader at your church if you're part
- 20:14of a community like that, hey, is healing
- 20:16prayer something that we do here?
- 20:18Is that something I could get involved in?
- 20:20Because that's one particular way that God helps
- 20:23deepen our experience of his love and the
- 20:27deepest levels of our being so we can
- 20:29receive life as we enter more deeply into
- 20:32radical change.
- 20:35Okay, one final quote from Dallas Willard.
- 20:37Thanks for indulging me.
- 20:39His kind of gloss on these rivers of
- 20:42living water that Jesus describes.
- 20:44Dallas describes it like this.
- 20:47An inexhaustible source of satisfaction that will set
- 20:51you free from domination by desire.
- 20:55That's what Jesus offers us, an inexhaustible source
- 20:58of satisfaction that will set you free from
- 21:01domination by desire.
- 21:04It's really there.
- 21:05It's really real.
- 21:07It's on offer.
- 21:09All you have to do is admit and
- 21:11commit to radical change and receive that life
- 21:15from Jesus.
- 21:18Lord Jesus, thank you that you do invite
- 21:20us into the process of recovery, that it's
- 21:22real, that we can say yes to it.
- 21:24Give us all courage to take our next
- 21:26step in recovery, whatever it is, give us
- 21:30courage to say the truth about our own
- 21:33behavior, more importantly about our own soul, about
- 21:36the state of who we are and how
- 21:38we are.
- 21:39Let us receive your life in the deepest
- 21:42reaches of our being.
- 21:44Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 21:45do our work with you.
- 21:52Thanks for listening.
