- 0:28Welcome to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio from Boise, Idaho. This
- 0:35is your host, Adam Graham. If you have a comment, email it
- 0:40to me Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net, follow us on Twitter at
- 0:46Radio Detectives, and become one of our friends on Facebook, Facebook dot com
- 0:53slash Radio Detectives. Before we do get started, I want to encourage you
- 0:59to pick up your copy of What Made the Golden Age Shine. It's the
- 1:06ebook I wrote explaining was someone so relatively young, I mean I started doing
- 1:11old time radio podcasts when I was twenty six, is interested in the Golden
- 1:17Age of entertainment. And it's a nice short rate. It's available for ninety
- 1:22nine cents on the Kindle Store, the nook Store, and the eyebook Store,
- 1:26as well as if you've got another device or just like to read it
- 1:29on your computer, you can pick it up at smash words dot com.
- 1:34Well for me, Originally, The Great Detectives of Old Time Radio was a
- 1:38five day week program, and we had a separate Dragnet program, which was
- 1:44actually my original podcast. But we finished our run through Dragnet in February twenty
- 1:49thirteen and I decided I wanted to continue doing procedurals, so first weekend January
- 1:57twenty thirteen, weeks banded to six days with the lineup in our Saturday slot,
- 2:02and I played every episode I could get my hands on. However,
- 2:07some new episodes have come to lot, so we're going to be revisiting the
- 2:13lineup over the next few weeks with some newly discovered episodes, and we're going
- 2:20to begin at the beginning with the audition for the lineup. In the beginning,
- 2:25the lineup was actually called Police Lineup. In addition, the role of
- 2:30Sergeant Matt Grebs in the main series would go to Wally Mayer, but in
- 2:36this audition it's played by Joseph Kerns, one of radio's most versatile actors,
- 2:42known as radio's man in Black, along with a wide variety of other roles.
- 2:49For a generation raised on television, he'd be known as the first Mister
- 2:54Wilson on Dennis the Menace. However, the bigger difference is one of tone,
- 3:00as we're about to hear, So for those of you who listen to
- 3:04the lineup from January twenty thirteen to March twenty fourteen, this is going to
- 3:09be a little bit different, so here within an audition date of May the
- 3:14twenty seventh of nineteen fifty is the Anita Cameron case. In police lineup,
- 3:23Ladies and gentlemen, we take you now behind the scenes of a police headquarters
- 3:27in a great American city, or under the cold glaring lights. Will pass
- 3:31before us the innocent, the vagrant, the thief, the murderer. We
- 3:38take you now to police lineup. Can I sit here? Sure? Sure
- 4:02any chair in the room is to home. You'll sit beside me, Lieutenant
- 4:06cut three. Sure, I hope I didn't do wrong about that boy,
- 4:12Lieutenant, but I'm pretty sure there was a bullet hole in that coat.
- 4:15You do just right. Thank the other people here. You've all come to
- 4:17try to identify someone in the lineup for one reason or another. May I
- 4:21have your attention? Please? Let's sergeant Greb in charge of the lineup.
- 4:26He'll explain it to you. You people out there on the other side of
- 4:30the wire and the audience room me. I have your attention, please,
- 4:34thank you. My name is Greb's Sergeant Matt Grebb. I will explain the
- 4:39lineup to you. Each of the suspects you will see will be numbered.
- 4:43I call off a number, their name and charge. If you have any
- 4:46questions or identifications, please remember the number assigned to the prisoner as I call
- 4:50his name at the end of each line. When I ask for questions or
- 4:55identifications, call out the number. If you are sure are not too short
- 4:59of the sus inspect, have him held. The officers who took your name
- 5:02will assist you. They are seated among you. Please be prompt with their
- 5:05questions or identifications. When the prisoners leave here, they are sent to the
- 5:13bathroom and dressed back into their jail clothes. Makes it quite difficult to bring
- 5:16them back after they leave here. The questions I ask these suspects are merely
- 5:21to get a natural tone of voice, so do not pay too much attention
- 5:25to their answers, as they often lie to bring on the line. All
- 5:30right, boys, this way you the front one, walk the end of
- 5:34the stage and take your place. The rest followed. Turn around and face
- 5:41front. Answer your side, Look straight ahead. Hey, you hold your
- 5:46head up. Look straight ahead so the people out there can see you.
- 5:50That's right. Number one, George Marvin concealed weapon. Where do you live?
- 5:56George, I'm sorry I can't hear you. Where do you live it,
- 6:00I said, I lived downtown? Where downtown? What street? A
- 6:03Moon hotel on Front Street? How long have you been in town? George
- 6:08Gray Day? Did the officer find a gun on you? Yeah? What
- 6:12kind? Thirty two? Forty five? Number two James Hodge theft? How
- 6:16long have you been in town? Jimmy on My Life? Twenty three years?
- 6:20Where do you live? Twelve fifteen? Pennsylvania Avenue? Where you armed?
- 6:24When the officer arrested Joe Nose? They never won a gun in my
- 6:27life? Number three Mickey Bianco Robbery? Where do you live? Mickey?
- 6:31I don't know, sir. Where'd you sleep last night? Mission House on
- 6:35Ruxtonhaven? Was anyone arrested with you? Yes? Got next to him?
- 6:40Number four Harry Greco Robbery. Was anyone arrested with you? Harry? Yeah?
- 6:44The kid could just talk to known him long? Yes, that's How
- 6:46long did you have the gun? The officers found? Or did make me?
- 6:50It was mine? Are there any questions or identifications from the audience?
- 6:57Any questions or identifications from you people out there? Hold Number two? Sergeant?
- 7:01All right, lieutenant, the rest of your boys go through this door.
- 7:04You Jimmy Hodge stays all right? Jimmy, turn sideways, face the
- 7:15wall, turned sideways to the front along since you shaved, Jimmy one day,
- 7:24shaved yesterday. This man has a slight half moon scar on his right
- 7:29cheek, obscured by his beard. Hype five eight. Does anyone make identification?
- 7:33I'm sure that's him. Lieutenant all right, Sergeant Greg Yes, Lieutenant,
- 7:38hold for interrogation. You here, Jimmy, Now you can sit down.
- 7:55Thank you? Oh Ben, I picked up the release forms on a
- 7:58couple of the boys in the lineup, letting him go no id them.
- 8:01I run him down a communication. Sure, go ahead and grab yourself some
- 8:05coffee. I'll do that. Thanks. It's a hot night, huh,
- 8:11there's a hot night. You can turn on that fan if you want to.
- 8:13Jimmy, Yes, switches right behind you on the wall. Okay,
- 8:18cigarette, Jimmy, I still have some of my own, sir, Ye
- 8:22light up. My name is Ben Guthrie. Jimmy. I want you to
- 8:28understand the laws as much on your side as I know. All about that,
- 8:31mister Guthrie, Yeah, I guess you do. Where'd you get that
- 8:35coach you tried to sell? Jimmy, I'm totally arresting officer, tell me
- 8:39too, got it from a man I work for sometimes I sweep up and
- 8:43clean the window. What's his name, Jimmy, mister Roy Cameron. He's
- 8:48got a little jewelry shop twelfth Street. He calls on me and now and
- 8:52then and mister Cameron gave you the coach, Yes, so he did.
- 8:56Why would I lie about a thing like that? You can ask him,
- 8:58we will, Jimmy, he gave you a coat. Why do you suppose
- 9:09he gave you a woman's coat. You wouldn't have any use for a woman's
- 9:13coat. I don't know why he gave it to me. I guess he
- 9:15just wanted to be kind. He knows I got assisted. Oh, but
- 9:18you didn't give it to your sister? Tried to sell it? Why?
- 9:22Why? Because I don't make much money, mister Guthrie. I thought I
- 9:24could pick up a couple of bucks easy. And why didn't you try to
- 9:28sell it the usual way to a friend or an old clothes shop or something
- 9:31like that? I did. They thought I had stole it, just like
- 9:35that man did he yeah, for the police. And all I did was
- 9:37come out of that alley and sell him an old coat. Where's the coat
- 9:41now? Jimmy, I have. I ran away and gave it to my
- 9:43sister, Ruth, Ruth Hodge. Yeah, and we'll check this. Mister
- 9:48Holt, that's the man who had you arrested and identified you tonight in the
- 9:52lineup. You know what made mister Holt really suspicious of you, A lot
- 9:58of things, I guess because it came out of the because in the back
- 10:01of the coat he saw a bullet hole. Mister Hole says to him.
- 10:05It looked like a bullet hole, a bullet hole. I didn't know anything
- 10:07about that. Mister Cameron gave me the coat all wrapped up. I didn't
- 10:11even see until that man asked me to unwrap it and show it to him.
- 10:13I don't know nothing about a bullet hole, nothing about it, that's
- 10:16all. Jimmy Roy Cameron on twelve string, Yes, sir, that's the
- 10:22man. Just ask him, just asking, mister Guthrie. Anyone here,
- 10:48mister Cameron, I mean sorry, mister ivis just in the back room brewing
- 10:54myself some coffee. Good morning, I help you watch an engagement ring.
- 11:01Yes, I'm Ben Guthrie, police, mister Cameron. Oh, let us
- 11:05shake hands. Mister Guthrie, thank you. I respect you men very highly.
- 11:11All you police. We're holding a boy on suspicion, mister Cameron and
- 11:13Jimmy Hodge. You know him, Jimmy, of course I know. Is
- 11:16he in trouble? No, before you tell me, please come into the
- 11:20back room and have a cup of coffee with me, please, mister Gussie.
- 11:24Thanks well through those curtains. Listen to it. It's perking. Take
- 11:35a cup off that hopefully. Mister Jimmy said you gave him a woman's call.
- 11:41Say when? Oh, and thanks? The boy said you gave I
- 11:48gave him a call. Hey, anybody here excuse me, mister Guthrie.
- 11:54Customers make yourself at home coming morning? May I help you? Oh?
- 12:01Might if we look around? Pots? My wife and me are looking for
- 12:03a winning or something pretty Okay, we'll look around. Please browse all you
- 12:09like. When you've decided, just call me. I'll be in the back
- 12:11room. I'm having coffee with the prayer. Yeah, sure, go right
- 12:15ahead, Pots. My wife met it all the time in the world.
- 12:18Oh you finished your cup, mister Gutsie, Now there I know. Thanks
- 12:24bout Jimmy Hodge. Mister Cameron, Oh yes, yes, so many interruptions.
- 12:28The coat yes, I gave it to Jimmy. He works hard.
- 12:33I thought of it. What's Jimmy done, mister Gutsry. When did you
- 12:37give it to him? Yesterday afternoon and he finished work about five o'clark.
- 12:41What's Jimmy done, mister Gutsiy something bad? It was a girl's coat.
- 12:46It had a bullet hole in it. I know what you said something,
- 12:50mister Cameron. You said you knew it had a bullet hold on it.
- 12:54I know it was Anita's coat, my daughters, the coach he was murdered
- 13:01in My child, Anita, the father of a murdered girl two months ago.
- 13:09Mister Guthrie, you must remember, Yeah, yeah, I do.
- 13:13This is a happy day for me, mister Guthrie. Tomorrow Saturday will be
- 13:18happier. Tomorrow night at ten o'clock will be much much happier. Tomorrow at
- 13:26ten, the man who killed my child, Anita will be executed for murder
- 13:31tomorrow. That's why I respect you police, mister Guthrie. You will kill
- 13:37him tomorrow Saturday. Matt, I was looking for you, oh Ben,
- 14:01I was just getting ready to go, Sergeant grab ready to run him through
- 14:05the lineup. I'll be run hold of a minute. Oh yeah, I'll
- 14:07be with you about ten minutes. Officer, what's on your mind? Ben?
- 14:11You once ran a boy through the lineup named Charles Dixon. Get out
- 14:13his files, Prince Gally, No, Charles Dixon murder convicted a couple of
- 14:18months ago in a hold up shooting papers courted the Anita Cameron case. Oh
- 14:22yeah, I remember Dixon slated for execution. Sat in there. Well that's
- 14:26tomorrow night. Yep, that's the one. Well, what is it?
- 14:28A last minute plea? The DA want the file? Oh me? Sure?
- 14:33Well, by the way, did you get the four to fifteen report
- 14:35I put on your desk? No, have an upstation. Well maybe I
- 14:37can save you some time. ALI attack on a woman off Pennsylvania Avenue.
- 14:41What about it? Woman's name is Ruth had Rouge. Hut that kid we
- 14:46had in the lineup last night, Jimmy Hodge. His sister's name was Ruth.
- 14:48Oh well, anyway, she's at St. Anthony's Hospital. I just
- 14:52thought i'd let you know, Ruth. Jimmy gives her a coat with a
- 14:56bullet holding it and she gets beaten up. Do a thing for me,
- 14:58Matt files hunt Charles Dixon, get them while there's much time that kids slated
- 15:03to die Saturday night and that's tomorrow night. Get the files, Matt,
- 15:07and while I'm going to read them, read them carefully. Matt's miss Ruth
- 15:31Hunt. Yes, doctor, I'm a policeman, mass. My name's Ben
- 15:35Guthrie. I've already been questioned. You police did that already. I know.
- 15:39I'm afraid i'll have you. Want to know what happened? Who beat
- 15:43you up? I told him, I told them all about Well, tell
- 15:46me who beat you. I don't know. I don't have any new answers,
- 15:52mister Guthrie. A man wanted your money? Is that it? The
- 15:54police keep telling me that's it, But it's not that at all. All
- 15:58right? What is my coat? The man one of the coat I was
- 16:00wearing? Oh, I told him that the coat your brother gave you.
- 16:06Yes, Jimmy gave me that coat, all right, Jimmy gave it to
- 16:08you. Then what I don't know. Well, it's important that you should
- 16:11know, miss Hodge. Jimmy gave you the coat. You put it on
- 16:14and wore it. Yes, What didn't you care that it had a hole
- 16:17in the back of it? What the hole on the back of the coat.
- 16:18What didn't show U? A all right? What happened? I walked
- 16:22into the side street, the one that looks like an alley of Pennsylvania.
- 16:25Amya ten more places called where I live? Gone? A man was there
- 16:30standing in a doorway, I guess, walked up in the back of me
- 16:33and whispered in my ear. He said, don't turn around, but that
- 16:36he'd give me ten dollars. He said it was for the coat I was
- 16:38wearing. Then what I screamed? He started to hit me, try to
- 16:41tear the coat off me. He said, stop screaming, but I didn't,
- 16:45guess he got scared. He ran, Would you recognize the man?
- 16:48No? He was in back of me. I told you, eh,
- 16:49yes she didn't. Where's the coat now hanging over there? Mister Guthrie's in
- 16:55the closet this one? Yes, take it, mister Guthrie, take it.
- 17:03I don't want it anymore. Close the wind way. Ben, all
- 17:26right, you can stop squibbling too. What time has it been you asked
- 17:44me that five minutes ago? What are you trying to build? Ben?
- 17:48A boy named Charles Dixon is going to be executed at ten tomorrow night,
- 17:51Saturday. Ro murder maybe he didn't do. You're gonna approve it with that
- 17:55dressmaker's dummy. You had me drag up here this cold It's got du mean
- 18:00something. Put it on the dummy again. You mean what's left of the
- 18:03code, don't you? Okay, there it is, turn it around.
- 18:14We've been doing this since eight o'clock. I asked you, what are you
- 18:17trying to build? I told you a boy's life. Look, man,
- 18:19eight o'clock. I brought this dummy into your office. Then I dress it
- 18:23with a dead girl's clothes, Anita Cameron's blouse, Anita Cameron's coat. The
- 18:27bullet hole in the blouse matches the bullet hole in the coat right on the
- 18:30same line. Ten o'clock, it's still matches. Ten thirty coffee. Yeah,
- 18:36eleven o'clock, we've torn the coat apart. Nothing. Eleven thirty.
- 18:40We got a torn up coat. There's got to be something there, Matt.
- 18:44That coat's got to mean something. First of all, it wasn't mentioned
- 18:48in the transcript of the trial. I called Cameron about that. You know
- 18:51that the man just forgot to mention it. That it's all that's human.
- 18:53When he found his daughter, he took the coat, offer to try to
- 18:56help her with her womb. Then why was Ruth Hodge eating up for the
- 19:00coat? Maybe the guy liked women's coat. I'll go over it again for
- 19:07you. Then two months ago, one Charles Dixon held up the jewelry store
- 19:12of one Roy Cameron. In the process of the hold up, he shot
- 19:15Anita in the back, her father being upstairs at the time. Tell me
- 19:18about this. Witnesses again met two witnesses, Verne Meredith and Grace Duncan.
- 19:22They were walking home from a dance. They saw Dixon with a gun in
- 19:26the girl's back. The girl had her hands up in the air. They
- 19:29heard a shot. They called the police. How do they know it was
- 19:30Dixon? They didn't. They noted the license number of a car parked with
- 19:33its motor running. Later, this car was found parked in front of Charles
- 19:37Dixon's house. In it was found the gun, the loot and Charles Dixon
- 19:42dead drunk. Can I go home? Yeah? Now Dixon's in a death
- 19:49soo waiting for tomorrow night, waiting for Saturday? Can I go home?
- 19:56Now? What time has it meant? It's Saturday. You are a witness
- 20:18behind the scenes at police headquarters as we bring you police lineup. Yes,
- 20:48I'm looking for mister Meredith at Vern Meredith, he lives in. Yes,
- 20:52may I see him? Busy just now. I'm missus Meredith. Can I
- 20:57help you. I'm from the police. Missus Meredith. I want to talk
- 21:00to your husband. I told you I'm sure I could tell you whatever you
- 21:03want to know. Tell him it's about the Anita Cameron case, Missus Meredith.
- 21:08Oh, tell him, Miss Meredith. I think you want to talk
- 21:11to me. Oh, of course, of course he will. Please come
- 21:15in. We're in the kitchen. Vern's having his breakfast. Please excuse our
- 21:21things. Look, we get up sort of laid Vern. Well, what
- 21:30do you want? It's a man from the police. He wants to Verne
- 21:33put down the newspaper. It's a man from the Yeah, yeah, I
- 21:36heard you. O. I'm just reading aside him to Grace when you were
- 21:41knocked on the door, mister mister Guthrie Ben Guthrie or mister ben Guthrie.
- 21:48I was reading here. She likes you when I do that, don't you
- 21:51guys? Sure? Sure? I like it? Beside him. Coincidence says
- 21:57the case of Anita Cameron is being scratched able by a man named. Let
- 22:03me see Guthrie, Ben Guthrie, you're the same, Yes, all says
- 22:10here he's trying to save the killer's life. There's a twist for a copy
- 22:15of mister Guthrie, tell me exactly what you son, what you did the
- 22:18night of the hold on soun a record, very clear, very public,
- 22:22nobody can read it. I didn't get around to him, So tell me.
- 22:26We were to dance, We were walking home. You were with him,
- 22:29missus Meredith. Then then you are Grace Duncan, the other witness.
- 22:34Yeah, yeah, Grace Duncan. Now missus Varn Meredith hung Grace, but
- 22:41I'll do the talking Grace. Yeah, mister gut Thrie, we were to
- 22:45dance. Grace and me what dance? Same like I testified the Eagle Social
- 22:49Club on Ben Varn was walking me home. I'll tell him, Grace,
- 22:56I walked home because that's romantic to walk all home. We stopped to look
- 23:02at a jewelry store Winda and see this child's Dixon holding up a girl.
- 23:06How could you tell her was a holder? Question? She had her hands
- 23:11up in the air. Girl does that for other reasons? How did you
- 23:15know it was Dixon? On the record after the shot. We took down
- 23:19the license number. You cops found out it was Dixon, not us.
- 23:23Missus Meredith. Was the girl wearing a coat when she was shot? That
- 23:29may? I the girl was wearing a coat? Anything else? No,
- 23:37vine, nothing else not now, thank you, missus Meredith Charles, Charles
- 24:03Dixon. My name is Ben Guthrie Charles. I'm a policeman. I want
- 24:11to know. I want to know what I'm going to be electrocuted? What
- 24:15do you want me to say? Anita Cameron? I killed her? I
- 24:19shot her in the back? Did you? I told me I did I
- 24:26believe I? Did I keep telling me? I? Did I believe it?
- 24:30You went into the jewelry shop to robin Anita Cameron came downstairs when she
- 24:33heard a noise. You made her turn around and shot her in the back.
- 24:36Is that what you did? Listen to me, Yeah, you're sure
- 24:41of it. Then you murdered Anita Cameron. I was drunk. I was
- 24:47at a dance and I got drunk. Why did you get drunk? I
- 24:49did it before I liked it. You don't understand, do you? I'm
- 24:53trying to help you. Did I tell you I want to be electrocuted?
- 25:00That they say, I won't hurt. Did you know when they kill a
- 25:03man electrocuted him, it's painless. Thank Charles, think has something to tell
- 25:08me? Something I can go on someplace. It'll take me someone I can
- 25:11talk to. What happened that night when you were drunk? Why did you
- 25:15leave the dance? Did you have the gun when you left the dance?
- 25:19Why did you tell her to turn around before you shot her? I feel
- 25:22right now drunk, then you don't really remember. You don't remember a thing.
- 25:30I killed her. They keep asking me to say so. They say
- 25:37a man always confesses before he's electrocuted, makes a man feel better. So
- 25:45I'm saying it I killed her, and I don't feel anything at all.
- 26:04Hey, Ben, I'm talking to you. Ben, Why don't you go
- 26:14home? Why? But worries you? Man? Sitting there like that for
- 26:18hours and nothing? Ben? Just why don't you go home? What time
- 26:25is it? Three more hours? I didn't ask you that. I said,
- 26:27what time is it? Seven o'clock? Look I'm doing over at the
- 26:36line. Nobody's stubbing a coffee? Ben? I brought you up. Didn't
- 26:52you do that a little while ago? Oh? Yeah, that got cold?
- 26:55This is nice and hot. You think Charlie Dixon killed that girl?
- 26:59You want an honest answer. An answer will make you feel just an answer,
- 27:03Okay, I think he killed that girl. No matter what's eating you,
- 27:06Charles Dixon will die in two hours because he killed him. You who
- 27:08talking? Yeah, I'm true. Then what are you hanging around fort not?
- 27:22Come in here? Yeah? Now what do you want? Why did
- 27:26someone beat up a girl to get my coat back? You asked me that
- 27:29fifteen minutes ago. I still don't know. How do they know about the
- 27:32coat at the same time I did. I don't know how how I slashed
- 27:36it? How do they know about the coat at the same time I did.
- 27:37I've been telling you, Ben, I don't know. Call up Cameron's
- 27:44jewelry shop. Get me Cameron. It's nine o'clock. Ben. Let the
- 27:47poor guy alone call him, okay, Ben, okay, let me look
- 27:51up the number air see Yeah, m hm hm h give me that phone.
- 28:17Don't bite my head off for a lousy phone here. Come on,
- 28:22come on hello, mister Cameron, missus Guthrie, mister Cameron Police Department.
- 28:33One question. What do you want? Mister Guthrie? Who was in your
- 28:36shop when I was talking to you who was in your shop. Don't tell
- 28:40at me, mister Guthrie. I was trying to think it was I remember
- 28:45now it was Vernon, Grace, Meredith. But they left the store.
- 28:48They didn't buy anything. Don't take your hat off, Matt. We're going
- 28:52out. We'll be ready in justice. I thought it was a cab going
- 29:18someplace, missus, Meredith. Sergeant greg just asked you if you're going someplace
- 29:22that the cab, Grace. No, it's not, No, it's not
- 29:27a cab. Burn, Oh, it's you. What do you want here?
- 29:33Real as, mister Meredith, And we're just talking to your wife.
- 29:37You're going someplace, Grace, while all the banks back he's talking to missus
- 29:42Meredith. We're going on a little trip. That's why did you get married,
- 29:45Grace March March the third. I got it right here inside my ring
- 29:49here, I'll show you. Yeah, the day after Anita Cameron was murdered,
- 29:52wasn't it in the impulse Grace and the impetuous? Or a wife can't
- 29:56testify against her husband, Grace, how did your husband kill Anita Cameron?
- 30:02Shut up, Verne, He asked your wife? Was it like disgrace?
- 30:04You waited outside until Verne was robbing that storm. Then Anita came in a
- 30:07surprise. He held a gun on her, made her turn around and shut
- 30:11her in cold blood. Charles Dixon did that? Remember, that's why he's
- 30:15going to burn? And you both got scared. Grace. You saw Charlie
- 30:18Dixon passed out in his car. You panted the gun and whatever you stolen
- 30:19the glove compartment. It was like that, wasn't it? No no over?
- 30:23Where'd you get the gun? Burn? I never had it, but
- 30:26you know how to shoot one? I never had it. You have a
- 30:30regular robbery. In forty three it said you had a gun. I was
- 30:33never kid. Why did you kill Anita? And forty three you had a
- 30:36gun? You said you never had a gun, all right, so I
- 30:40had it? Is that the gun you used to kill Anita? When I
- 30:42was arrested in forty three? The police kept that guy, and you used
- 30:47another gun to kill Anita? Dixon killed Anita? What about the coat?
- 30:49What cold? What are you talking about? What coat are you talking cold?
- 30:53Anita was wearing when you shut her. Look, we gotta catch you,
- 30:57kid. The coat burn? You beat up a girl to get it
- 31:00back on Pennsylvania Avenue you' hitting an alley and beat up a girl to get
- 31:02the coat back. Why I told you, Okay, over there, over
- 31:11there and face the wall. Pasped your hands over your head? What is
- 31:15this? You hurt him against that wall? All right? By this?
- 31:22You did fine? Burn? Sit down, Grace, man Ah, get
- 31:29her a glass of water. Okay, where's the kitchen? Right with that?
- 31:33Though? Here you are, missus Meridam. Your husband's a murderer,
- 31:47Grace. You Cody tried to tear off a girl's back proofs. Don't talk
- 31:52to him. Grace's fish and you don't know anything, Grace. When you
- 31:56and Verne were in the jewelry store, you heard me talking to mister Cameron
- 31:59about the coat, so where knew it was important? Now I know why
- 32:02he didn't do what he did. Look at your husband standing over there,
- 32:06Grace, I don't know what He's got his hands clasped over his head,
- 32:09and a coat rises when a person does that. If I shut your husband
- 32:15in the back, the bullet hole in his coat would be a couple of
- 32:17inches lower than the one in his shirt. Make them stop the bullet hole.
- 32:22The bullet hole in Anita's coat was in line with the one in her
- 32:27blouse that means her hands word in the air, like you told us you
- 32:30lied at the trial. Grace, you lied because you're burn here killed Anita.
- 32:32Oh less to Grace. I'll trick you. Oh take your time,
- 32:37missus Merida think about it. Got a cigarette man? M h yeah?
- 32:45Thanks? You want one? Missus Maraden? Oh am sure? Having a
- 32:57hot spell? Mind? If I open window there? That's better, isn't
- 33:06it. Don't you want to be healthy for your trial? So so don't
- 33:22move cover that. I've got a phone call to make. Uh huh operator,
- 33:31this is the police department. Give me the warden the state penitentiary.
- 33:36What time has it been? Ill? Get yourself excited, Ben, You've
- 33:38still got ten minutes. Police Lineup was produced and directed by Elliott Lewis,
- 34:07written by Morton Fine and David Friedkin, and stars William Johnstone as Lieutenant Ben
- 34:13Guthrie and Joseph Kerns as Sergeant Matt Grebb. Music was composed and conducted by
- 34:17Eddie Dunstetter. Featured in Tonight's cast were David Ellis, Jack Edwards, Jester
- 34:22Hairston, Byron Kin, Vivian Baber, Lillian Biaf Herb Butterfield and Anthony Barrett.
- 34:30You've been listening to Police lineup or before you have passed the innocent,
- 34:35the vagrant, the thief, the murderer. Listening again next week when police
- 34:42Lineup brings you. This will help me get my little girl back. We
- 34:55want you to identify the man you saw talking to him. Your attention,
- 35:00please, two people out there on the other side of the wire in the
- 35:04audience room, may I have your attention? Please? Thank you. My
- 35:08name is Grebs Argent, Matt Grebb. I'll explain the lineup to you.
- 35:14Each of the suspects you will see will be numbered. I call off the
- 35:17number their name in charge. If you have any questions or identifications, please
- 35:22remember the number assigned to the prisoner as I call his name at the end
- 35:27of each line. When I ask for a question to identifications, call out
- 35:30the number number. This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System. Welcome back.
- 35:50As I mentioned a big tonal difference, it definitely does not sound what
- 35:57the same show, and there is a reason for that. The main reason
- 36:05is that they are adapting a Broadway is my Beat's script. This was actually
- 36:14the basis for the third script of the Los Angeles run of Broadway's My Beat
- 36:22with ry Thori I should say the fourth The Mary Gilbert Murder Case, broadcast
- 36:29on November twenty six, nineteen forty nine. That program was also produced by
- 36:35Elliot Lewis and written by Friedman and Fine and I guess they made the decisions
- 36:44just to try and do Broadway as My Beat with a lineup scene tacked on
- 36:52at the beginning. In some ways, given what CBS was going for in
- 36:57terms of direction as a come petitor or a challenger to drag that it's surprising
- 37:04that the lineup made it past the audition because I already had Broadways My Beat.
- 37:09I'm thankful it did. I have to admit that in the original story,
- 37:15the lieutenant's actions made a lot more sense, as Lieutenant Danny Clover's involvement
- 37:22began with the plea of the mother of the boy about to be executed.
- 37:28It is kind of a leaf in logic to go from I'm looking to find
- 37:34out by this person sold a coat with a bullet hole in it and verify
- 37:39the veracity of their story to I verified the veracity of their story. Let
- 37:45me go ahead and reopen a close murder investigation. Though Obviously the logic changes
- 37:52a little bit when the sister is attacked over the coat. I should also
- 37:58mention that this was the same script from Broadways. My beat was actually the
- 38:04basis for the episode of Bold Venture we played back in I think it was
- 38:08February or March for the listener support campaign, So even before it became a
- 38:15national cause, mort Fine and David Freakin believed in recycling. I definitely like
- 38:22the direction the show went in better, and so that's why I'll be glad
- 38:28to bring you an episode of the lineup from its main run. A comment
- 38:35now from Jacqueline regarding the previous show we had here, Man from Homicide maybe
- 38:42a bit too hard boiled for me. Well, certainly I've received some feedback
- 38:46to that effect on that particular program. Thanks so much for sharing, Jacqueline.
- 38:52And then we have an email from Chaer who says your show keeps me
- 38:58company while I work as acurity guard. I used to edit a couple of
- 39:02podcasts, so I have an idea how much time and effort you invest in
- 39:06the show. I really appreciate your work. Well, thanks so much.
- 39:09Share. I should say that most of the editing is done by Andrew Rhines,
- 39:15without whose help I would invest even more into this podcast, and do
- 39:20encourage you to check out Andrew's podcast at Otrwesterns dot com. He does a
- 39:27series of Western programs that he's podcasting, So if you prefer another genre and

- 39:42be back tomorrow with the Adventures of Philip Marlow and join us for a slightly
- 39:49less like Broadway is my Beat episode of the lineup next Tuesday. In the
