- 3:30now from the Canal Charles Humaine Association with this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of
- 3:35the Week picture now posted as always Dave Allen Radio on Facebook and The Dave
- 3:39Allen Show on ex Hannah, good Morning, Welcome to the show. How
- 3:43are you, good morning, I'm good. How are you? I'm fine,
- 3:46And I understand that we have a little audience there in the background.
- 3:49It's right on, que one of your dogs started barking right now. Which
- 3:53one is that that is a little, a little bit overweight dog. Her
- 4:00name's Tricksy, little overweight Tricksy, got it? Got it. Atlas is
- 4:06the name of our pet this week. Get the pictures, I said,
- 4:10posted on my social media as always, tell us about Atlas. All right,
- 4:15Well, Atlas he's a very very sweet boy. He's around nine months
- 4:20old and he is a male. He is not neutered yet, but he
- 4:26will be. We've gone to get him on the schedule for it. He
- 4:30shows to be kid friendly. And the reason why I say shows or seems
- 4:33to be or something like that each time I say that each week is because
- 4:38it doesn't always mean that they that we know one hundred percent sure but they
- 4:42are kids friendly. It just means that we have noticed while they have been
- 4:46with us, when people have been visiting, or kids have been walking by
- 4:49or something that they do show to be like just fine with the kids,
- 4:54or maybe that they are just passing by and it seems like they have no
- 4:58reaction towards them or anything like that, and we always always always advout caution
- 5:02and supervision and everything like that whenever you are taking an animal home with kids,
- 5:09but he does seem to be kid friendly. He is really good with
- 5:14other dogs in our care as well. When we've had him out in play
- 5:16groups. He is very loose and wiggly and playful with all the other dogs.
- 5:21He seems to be pretty submissive to other dogs as well, so he
- 5:27isn't really the alpha. I would say he likes to play. If another
- 5:31dog corrects him, he seems to do well with that. He doesn't really
- 5:35he doesn't not listen. He's a very good listener with other dogs. He
- 5:41is a foster candidate, so if anybody wanted to foster him, to adopt
- 5:45him, or if they just wanted to foster him for a couple of days
- 5:47and give him a chance outside of the shelter life, then that would be
- 5:53amazing and I'm sure he would absolutely love that. He does pull a little
- 5:57bit on the leash, so of course, he is nine months, so
- 6:00he's still technically a younger adult, a younger puppy if you will. He
- 6:04is under a year. Still so he definitely could use a little bit of
- 6:09training with that, but other than that, he is an all around good
- 6:13dog. I actually had him out in the playyard I think it was last
- 6:16week, and was taking some pictures of In that picture that I think you
- 6:21was actually taken by one of our one of my coworkers with her camera.
- 6:25We sometimes will go out there and take pictures of them to kind of help
- 6:29with their profiles and people to see them a little bit clearer, a little
- 6:31bit better. But he is looking for a forever home, and he is
- 6:36absolutely adorable and very very sweet. He is a little bit shy at first
- 6:41with you going like over his head and stuff like that, so you always
- 6:45want to just be patient with them and let them come to you and stuff
- 6:47like that. But he's very very sweet once he warms up to you.
- 6:50But Dave Alan Chow and five Anue and Line brought to you apart by fresh

- 7:04fresh Air Filters dot Us or called three zero four four four zero one one
- 7:09zero four for fresh air, because everyone deserves fresh air. You mentioned the
- 7:13word foster there. I understand now you have a desperate need for fosters and
- 7:17adopters because you got a lot of animals there at the shelter. Hannah.
- 7:21Yes, I believe yesterday we had. I'm pretty sure it's a little bit
- 7:27more today, but we had three hundred and twenty animals in our care now.
- 7:30That includes the ones that are at the shelter as well as the ones
- 7:33that are in foster homes, because we do still provide care for those ones.
- 7:36We still give out food to them, blankets, beds, treats,
- 7:41toys, anything like that. We still provide care for all of those out
- 7:44in foster care. The foster parents, if you will, they usually don't
- 7:47have to do anything like buying anything like that unless they wish to do so
- 7:51themselves. But yes, three hundred and twenty I believe is what we had
- 7:56yesterday. I believe we have a little bit more today. And of course,
- 8:01with the adoptions that we've been having, we have not been having much
- 8:03luck. No matter how many adoptions that we have been doing, it still
- 8:07seems that we are just kind of replacing those animals that are going out and
- 8:13then some Why do you think that is? I mean? Is I mean
- 8:16because there's a you know, there's an entire the whole mindset that goes into
- 8:20adopting an animal from the shelter, and maybe certain sometimes maybe people hand to
- 8:26come in with maybe too high of expectations and they don't realize what a stressful
- 8:30situation it is going well, first of all being in the shelter to begin
- 8:33with, and then going to a home and maybe you know, it takes
- 8:37time to get acclimated. And do you think sometimes that that uh, and
- 8:41look, we've all been there, including myself, do you think that sometimes
- 8:45maybe the people that do the adoptions that maybe they they just come in with
- 8:50unreal expectations on the on the pets. Sometimes I think it could be a
- 8:54factor of that as well. As I also know that it is currently kitten
- 9:00season, so we do have a lot of kittens coming in, cats coming
- 9:03in, pregnant moms coming in. We also have a lot of puppies coming
- 9:07in. It feels like it's puppy season as well, so our puppy room
- 9:11stays pretty full. But yeah, I would say that, you know,
- 9:16coming in. I think everybody should be pretty open minded when they come in.
- 9:20I mean, have your set expectations of course, you know, you
- 9:22know, your lifestyle and things like that. But I always, always always
- 9:26recommend to anyone and everyone to foster before you are of adopting, because that
- 9:33kind of lets you see like a trial and error basically of how they're going
- 9:37to be. Because yes, we can tell you what we know about them
- 9:39while they've been in the shelter, but their house life could be completely different
- 9:43than the shelter life. We've got them on a routine and we know what
- 9:48they like, we know what they don't like. But in a home with
- 9:50other animals that they haven't seen before, with cats, with kids, with
- 9:54anything like that, it's it's stressful to them. First of all, it
- 9:58takes at least three weeks for them to kind of get out of their shell
- 10:01a little bit. So I definitely think you know, being patient with the
- 10:05animals, taking your time, not coming in and just adopting one. Just
- 10:09to adopt one. As a good audio and read the descriptions. I mean,
- 10:11you guys do a great job on the descriptions. This dog is cat
- 10:16friendly, This dog is not cat friendly. This one tends to, you
- 10:20know, like to be an escape artist. You guys are very honest in
- 10:22your descriptions. You know, this dog is going to need a place to
- 10:26run. This is not your your lap dog. This this dog is full
- 10:28of energy. This dog has shown and it's probably not good with other dogs.
- 10:33This dog's great with other dog. I mean, you guys do a
- 10:35great job with the descriptions. To do your homework, you know, as
- 10:37you said, Hannah, just just don't go in and say, well,
- 10:39I want to go get a dog or I want to get a cat.
- 10:41Read the descriptions and get one that the best. The best suit's not necessarily
- 10:46your personality, but your lifestyle. You know, if you're somebody that's gone
- 10:50all day and you don't have time to take care of that pet, well
- 10:52you may not want to get that particular one, you know, And and
- 10:56for God's sakes, don't keep them chained up. And that's another story for
- 11:00another time. Got a text? Actually have two texts here for you,
- 11:01Hannah. One says, is the shelter still the need of another humane officer?
- 11:07And if so, besides being an animal lover, what are the position
- 11:11requirements? Thank you? Now I know you're not in the HR department up
- 11:13there, but can you give us any insight on that? Well, you
- 11:18definitely got to be an animal lover, that's for sure. You definitely gotta
- 11:20have patience. But the humane officer position, I'm not one hundred percent sure
- 11:26if they've feeled it yet or not. I haven't heard any updates on that.
- 11:28I know that they were hiring, they were doing interviews. I think
- 11:31they did some open interviews, so I think that if they have not picked
- 11:35one yet, that they are going through and filtering all those out. If
- 11:41you haven't had an interview, or if you are interested in the scision,
- 11:43what I recommend doing is coming up to the shelter and feeling out on application
- 11:50or we also have a spot on our website where you can join our team
- 11:54and you can fill out an application on there and then you can call and
- 11:58follow us on it, and that way we can It's just to the correct
- 12:00person, because I don't want to give you any wrong information. Okay,
- 12:03somebody else, UH answer my question? I said, why why have have
- 12:07there been issues with the success rate? And somebody said, many people refuse
- 12:09to take care of their animals and get them fixed. Uh, And Uh,
- 12:13it is kitten season now, says a texture. Another one says,
- 12:16can I suggest if you plan to specifically adopt a kitten, please adopt them
- 12:20by the twos Like people, They're afraid, lonely and suffer oppression, says
- 12:24a texture. You guys out and about anywhere this weekend, Hannah getting events.
- 12:30We are going to the I believe it is the Candle's Creek Summer Fest.
- 12:35I believe it is going on tomorrow, so definitely come out to that.
- 12:41I think we'll be there at twelve. I'll have to double check and
- 12:45let you know on that, but the information to be available on your on
- 12:46the on your Facebook page. I'm sure so well. I mean, because
- 12:50I know this time of year you guys are out and you stay really really
- 12:52busy. Hannah. It's always a pleasure to talk to you, and we
- 12:56will talk soon. Thanks a lot, all right, Thank you gardener again.
- 13:00Can Altrult Humine Association with this week's adopt Me please put it the week
- 13:03Let's review. Atlas is our dog this week. Rian. He's a nine
- 13:07month old male, micro chip vaccinated, not fixed yet, but will be
- 13:11came in as a stray. Loves other playful dogs. Seems to be kid
- 13:16friendly. He's around twenty six pounds right now, probably won't get a heck
- 13:20of a lot bigger, maybe up to around forty pounds or so. And
- 13:22again he is nine months old, so he's still a younger dog. He
- 13:24does pull slightly in the leash, but that certainly can be corrected with the
- 13:28right beautiful dog. I've got his picture posted on Dave Allen Radio on Facebook

- 17:11not with me today, but he will be at Live on the Levee tonight
- 17:14starts a six thirties ahead on down and check it out. Mackenzie Spencer from
- 17:18Festival is here. Hey many, I got no, I got you got
- 17:21still can't there? It is all right? Good morning now we can hear
- 17:25me now when I'm talked about this band it's doing Live on the Levee night
- 17:26Black Joe Louis and the Honey Bears. You just kind of popped up here.
- 17:30I know, what can you tell me about it? We were excited
- 17:33about this one when we were looking at booking Live on the Levee this year.
- 17:36We were excited about them. Lots of good like soul, funk,
- 17:40like very danceable music. So I think it'll be a good time tonight.
- 17:45And so you said it's just good time party music basically, right, I
- 17:48think so. Yeah. And the Spurgey Hankins band, Yeah, they're local.
- 17:52Spurgey You would never know it. Spurgee is seventy four years old.
- 17:55Wow, and still rocking. I mean he is still everywhere. Actually was
- 18:00with somebody in his band yesterday and they're they're working on new music right now.
- 18:03Actually, So and Weather it's going to be fantastic. Yes again,
- 18:08thankfully I did it. I was talking to a Straw and we were texting
- 18:11back and forth yesterday and he was telling me what a great night it was
- 18:15last last week for Live on the Levee. I don't know that I've ever
- 18:18seen the leves packed as I did last week. It was I don't know
- 18:22if they had the exactly obviously you can't have the exact number, but he
- 18:26said it may have been one of the best nights in the history of the
- 18:27Levite. I would agree with that. I mean, everywhere you looked,
- 18:30there wasn't even a place to stand. I mean, was such a part
- 18:34of it is if it's not too hot, then it's not too cold and
- 18:38raining, storyy and whatever, then you know the people will come out.
- 18:41Yeah, and I mean even on the river. I mean we counted ninety
- 18:45some boats out on the river right behind us. Couldn't find even standing room.
- 18:49In front of us. The boulevard was packed even so, I mean
- 18:52it was a huge night our good friends at the Trojan Landing Marine. I
- 18:56had to I had Heather on from the show earlier talking about their new food
- 19:03truck they've got set up down there, and I hear it awesome. I
- 19:06hear it's it's pretty good. Yes, I've heard that too. I've heard
- 19:07it is awesome, and go check that out. So you're going to talk
- 19:11about festival, I am, yes, absolutely, talk to me. Yeah,
- 19:15So festival officially kicks off June fourteenth and goes ten days through the twenty
- 19:19third. We have about ninety events that are going to be happening over the
- 19:23course of ten days all over at Charleston, so South Hill's, West Side,
- 19:26downtown, everywhere. You'll be able to find things to do. But
- 19:30we actually have some events tomorrow as well. We are partnering on Foam at
- 19:37the Dome that's going to be going on in front of the Capitol Complex starting
- 19:40at three o'clock tomorrow, and then our dance Gala Dance Festival is tomorrow night
- 19:45at seven thirty at the Culture Center, So you can like walk right over,
- 19:48okay, And so what will you be doing in because I'll be at
- 19:52foone with the dough Domar. I'm going to be down there with with our
- 19:53sister Station ninety eight seven of the Mouth wonderful class of Dark mister Animal and
- 19:57get to I get to take care of Steve Animal a fone with the dome.
- 20:00What could possibly lose them? Okay? Possibly go right right, don't
- 20:03lose them. I'm going to be hanging out with Animal down there tomorrow.
- 20:07But what are you going to be doing there? We're going to have a
- 20:07tent set up down there. We're gonna have festival schedules and things so you
- 20:11can find out all the information about everything going on for Fest of All again
- 20:15June fourteenth through the twenty third, and I guess, being a second pair
- 20:18of odds to make sure animal doesn't get lost, I guess well, I
- 20:21think I think pretty much all of our stations is going to be down at
- 20:22one point or another through out there. Any crash is going to be there,
- 20:25and several others from yeah, ninety six one KWS and B one hundred
- 20:29I think is going to be there. I think pretty much all of this
- 20:30is got to be there at at some point or another. So so Fest
- 20:33of All I mean officially kicks off. Officially kicks off the fourteenth and yeah,
- 20:37and so we have ten days. Truly, there's something for everyone.
- 20:41We really focus on music theater, aren't in dance, but we've expanded that
- 20:45throughout the years to include the literary arts, culinary arts. We'll have different
- 20:51things going on and including you know a lot of collaborations, a lot of
- 20:55partnerships, because that's what festival is really all about. And you know,
- 20:57one of the things about Fest of All is and so many great events go
- 21:00on in Charleston, you know from Regatta and you know all these other things,
- 21:03but it's one of the rare events that really takes up the entire city
- 21:08because there's not an area of the city that I could see and look in
- 21:12at your information that doesn't have something going on. Yeah, and that's and
- 21:17that's by design. We want to make sure that it's accessible, Like we
- 21:21want people to be able to come out, you know, walk from your
- 21:23house, come over and do stuff. And that's why the majority of our

- 22:07I had you on. You know, ever since I've been doing this
- 22:08year, we talk about festival. That's part of it too. Give us
- 22:11the history of festival. Sure, absolutely so. In two thousand and four,
- 22:15it kind of was an idea that was spurred from the question why can't
- 22:21we have this here? People were traveling, they were going to other festivals
- 22:25around the country, around the world and seeing all these really really cool,
- 22:27unique things, and people would say, you know, well, why can't
- 22:30West Virginia have that? Why can't Charleston have that? And so in two
- 22:33thousand and four, a group of folks met with then former mayor Danny Jones
- 22:38to you know, explore the idea of could we talk about this, is
- 22:42this something we could do? And since then it's just grown and grown and
- 22:45grown exponentially. So this is twenty years for us and it is now a
- 22:51ten day festival in June, a ten day festival in October, year round
- 22:55programming within the school system and after school programs that give more education to students,
- 23:00a speaker series that runs from February to October monthly, the Holiday Market
- 23:07now at the Capital Market that we do in December, and so we just
- 23:11keep kind of growing the programming. And there's something that we think about festival
- 23:17being in June, as you said, in festive fall, but this really
- 23:21is as you just said, it's a year round thing. It is,
- 23:22yeah, I mean, And a lot of stuff, you know, takes
- 23:25place a little bit behind the scenes. Some of the things that are in
- 23:27the schools and the after school, after school programs. You know, we'll
- 23:32send paid artists in there. We pay for all the supplies for everything that
- 23:36the kids do. They work with the kids for eight weeks in the spring
- 23:40to be able to come up with artwork but also learn about art and things
- 23:44like that, and so that that's kind of going on behind the scenes.
- 23:47And we also have a program called ticket Town that gives free tickets to students,
- 23:52primarily on the West side of Charleston, to attend cultural events for free.
- 23:56So like the Charleston Led Opera, gild Children, Seed of Charleston,
- 24:00things at the Clay Center, things like that. And not only do we
- 24:04arrange those tickets, we can arrange transportation meals because you know, federally mandated
- 24:11meal times within the after school programs for them to get their funding, and
- 24:14so we work with them on that year round as well. And it takes
- 24:18a lot of people to pull this off. I mean a lot of people
- 24:21to pull off year long programming, but specifically when you get into the month
- 24:23of June. Definitely not just pay. I mean you can't do it with
- 24:26just your staff, right, because we're a staff of three. Yeah,
- 24:30and so yeah, year round we have three people that are running all of
- 24:33this program. Or do you get your volunteers? I mean just people that
- 24:36say, hey, I want to help out or yeah, So thankfully we
- 24:37have got Thankfully, we have an intern program which we bring in young people
- 24:42primarily juniors in high school through college aged kids that will come in and learn
- 24:48about different facets of what we do throughout June, and so we have four
- 24:53of those. We do have some contract employees that we bring on specifically for
- 24:59the month of June for this because it's so big, But we do really
- 25:03rely on volunteers and you know, we have people sign up throughout throughout May
- 25:08and June to volunteer for us in the month of June. Uh. And
- 25:11you know, we have a lot of folks that come back year after year,
- 25:15but we also work with some groups like Recovery Point h and some folks
- 25:18like that that will bring in a whole group that want to volunteer. I
- 25:22was going to ask about that because that when I ask where you got your
- 25:26volunteers. So obviously you have a lot of because you know, high school
- 25:29kids have to do community service. But I've seen that other organizations and I'm
- 25:33happy to hear that you do that do reach out to groups like with Every
- 25:36Point and are different halfway houses, whatever, say hey, we need some
- 25:41we need some help with this. Yeah. Absolutely, And you know Recovery
- 25:44Point especially, I'll just give them a shout out because they have been so
- 25:47consistent in their volunteering with us. They usually will come down and help us
- 25:52set up on bigger days with a lot of heavy lifting and moving, and
- 25:56that they're always more than happy to be there, more than happy to help.
- 26:00And so we really appreciate partnerships like that. But I mean there are
- 26:03also corporations around here, Dave that need that, you know, give their
- 26:07employees maybe a day a month that they need to volunteer or so many hours
- 26:11that they need to volunteer. And so those folks as well are some that
- 26:15we reach out to to say, you know, would that be something that
- 26:18aligns with what your corporation wants. I'm going to have you on several times
- 26:22once first of all, really gets up enrolling. But give us the website
- 26:27or the social media work can people learn because it's it would be impossible to
- 26:30say, okay, we got this going on, because I mean where can
- 26:33people go. Yeah, the little book that we have is thirty seven pages
- 26:34long, and so I don't want that book as s right, Yeah,
- 26:37yeah, little I don't want to take the rest of the time today just
- 26:40to read it to you. But if you go to Festival Charleston dot com,
- 26:44you can find all of the information for every event that we're putting on
- 26:47over those ten days. And also we're on Facebook, we're on x We're
- 26:52on Instagram under Festival Charleston. I got a text here it says Recovery Point
- 26:56is always bringing thirty to forty people to help Reggie Jones CEO make sure that
- 27:00happens throughout the year. Yes, I mean it is truly. They they
- 27:04bring so many people, and they're so excited to be there and so appreciative,
- 27:08and we we love working with them. It is always such a great
- 27:11process. Let me ask you a question, how well do you know Reggie
- 27:14Jones? I don't actually let me tell you know what makes Reggie Jones,
- 27:18Let's say superstar. He's from Logan. All superstars are from Logan. That's
- 27:22what I That is what I've learned from this show. I've been on so
- 27:26many times, and every single time I find out how much better Logan is
- 27:30than the time for It's I'm just kidding og. Reggie Now went to the
- 27:33high school together. He graduated with my wife. He's a Clint. I've
- 27:36known Reggie literally since like nineteen eighty two. He is a fantastic individual,
- 27:40fantastic family. Yeah, and he's a he's a class actor. I'm friends
- 27:45with their director of development, Leah Cook, and they actually have taken over
- 27:48ice Cream in the Arts this year. They're the people that are running that
- 27:52program. So that'll be going on on the West Side when June twenty third.
- 27:56All right, we'll have you on, as I said several times,
- 27:59doing you to talk about everything going on for fest of All Mackenzie. I
- 28:03appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot, do you think for me?

- 32:05Chef Paul, Welcome to the show Man, Thanks for having me, Thank
- 32:07you for being here, Thank you for being here. Excitument's building again for
- 32:09you. Right, I am excited exciting this year, I'm going to actually
- 32:13try to have a good time. So this James Beard a ward. Okay,
- 32:15you were nominated last year. I think we had gotten the show to
- 32:19talk about it. What was the whole experience like going Was it go to
- 32:22Chicago gain this year? Yeah, Chicago Theater. After party is in the
- 32:28in the train station. Uh. It was a surreal experience. It was
- 32:32a lot, I would say, something I've never experienced before. You know,
- 32:37you you watched the Oscars on you know TV Oscar night. It was
- 32:43very very similar to that. You know, we our hotel was close enough
- 32:45that we walked, we walked around the corner and lights, paparazzi, cameras,
- 32:52flashing, red carpet, you know, everything. But them asking me
- 32:54what fashion I was They probably tonight, Yeah, who am I wearing?
- 32:59And he said, a little chef boyardy, Yes, a little stain on
- 33:02my shirt. That's exactly what I'm wearing. But I wondered about that because
- 33:07you know, you go out and you probably I mean, I know you've
- 33:08read about it, you've probably seen it, but you really don't know what
- 33:10to expect till you're actually there. And so you went there last year,
- 33:15and now this year, you know, you go back and you're thinking,
- 33:16Okay, well I'm gonna do this a little differently this year, do that
- 33:20a little differently. I think that I'm gonna try to actually relax and have
- 33:24a good time and have fun. You're exactly right, you know. I
- 33:29think first time anywhere, you know, you're you're nervous, you don't know
- 33:32what to expect. You're kind of a fish out of water. I'm like,
- 33:35oh my gosh, these are all the best chefs from around the country.
- 33:37And then meause, how did I get here? A little bit of
- 33:42that imposter syndrome? Right, But you know, then you realize how much
- 33:45work has gone into this, not only over the last twenty five years of
- 33:49my career, but also with our teams, everybody at ten ten, and
- 33:52you know the support that we received not only from our wonderful city but our
- 33:58awesome state. I mean, I really had to buy a mobile phone charger
- 34:01because my phone was ringing and beeping and messaging off the hook. And this
- 34:07is what West Virginians do. It's one of our own I was part of
- 34:12years ago, going back to twenty eleven, I was part of the still
- 34:15I am a part of the team with the Worst Lot with Lando Murphy and
- 34:17when Landau was doing America's Got Talent, and I was living in Logan at
- 34:21the time, his hometown, and I was there and I helped with the
- 34:25management team with a lot of that stuff that we did with Landale back then,
- 34:30and how people rallied around him, how they did, you know,
- 34:34with mister Bowen not long ago, and how we just do how we do
- 34:37so for those of us who can't go to Chicago. Evan from Capitol Market,
- 34:43Ryan and I were hoping that you could maybe hook us up to go
- 34:45to it, but apparently we're not going to Chicago. We can go to
- 34:49Capital Market though, right if you can't be in Chicago, it's the next
- 34:52best thing. It's the next best thing. What are you doing over there?
- 34:53So, in the context of wanting to support someone that does so much,
- 35:00not just for our community but specifically the market, last year, we
- 35:06had the opportunity to honor and celebrate a guy that is always, you know,
- 35:12the man behind the scenes making someone's wedding perfect, making sure an event
- 35:15and a dinner or an engagement. The emotional connection I think that people have
- 35:22with Paul sort of is linked to those core memories, and this was an
- 35:27opportunity for our community specifically to celebrate just one of the best people that we
- 35:34all know. And we're hoping to recreate some of that magic that that we
- 35:38captured last year. So we've last year we kind of we kind of did
- 35:44it under the gun, and this year we've put some ducks in a row,
- 35:46we've retoold some things, and I think we've got a really unique evening
- 35:51lined up. Chef curated seven of his favorite local chefs to come round out
- 35:59a fantastic menu and spread. We're working with Ted and Venue to to do
- 36:05some some nicely paired drinks or monitors set up throughout the market to stream the
- 36:13awards so as as it gets time to announce Best Chefs Southeast, Yeah,
- 36:19that's and that's that's your category Best Chefs Chef. So it's Georgia, North
- 36:23Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia. So you know,
- 36:29you think about the other Charleston, right, you think about Atlanta,
- 36:32you think about Nashville, Nashville, you think about Charlotte. I mean,
- 36:37these are major cities that little Charleston Weston, West Virginia. But you know,
- 36:40I think you know, I work with Chelsea Ruby at the Department of
- 36:45Tourism all the time, and you know one of our things that we say
- 36:49all the time is now the secret's out. Now we are dining destination.
- 36:52And it's not just me. Obviously. The reason why we wanted to include
- 36:58other chefs is because that one of my pillars is supporting the rising tide,
- 37:04you know, supporting everybody, supporting everybody in town, supporting everybody in our
- 37:07state. Offering help if I can, offering advice, taking advice, learning
- 37:14every day from others and really trying to be a little bit of that water
- 37:17that's raising all of our boats in West Virginia. One again, we're talking
- 37:22with with Chif, Paul Smith, and Evan Osborne from Capitol Market. So
- 37:24what time the things started? Capital Market on Sunday. The party itself will
- 37:30run from six to nine pm. It's sort of a fluid evening in that
- 37:36well, this is a live event where we've got we've got some boots on
- 37:39the ground in Chicago. Our board president of the Food Guy, Stephen Keith,
- 37:43will be there providing us text updates throughout the evening. All right,
- 37:46everyone, time to shut up and let's gather around around the big screen and
- 37:52we'll come together and hopefully have a toast right after. Well, and you
- 38:00you know we another one of our pillars is supporting community and community. The
- 38:05reason why I moved home wasn't because of the accolades. It wasn't because,
- 38:08you know, I thought, James Beard, I never would have thought this
- 38:10before. But to be able to be nominated in Charleston, West Virginia versus
- 38:15Ashville, Napa Valley, New York City, the other wonderful places that I've
- 38:21lived just being so much more, you know, and it literally takes a
- 38:24village. People like Evan, people like yourself, people that are supporting us.
- 38:30You know, Chad Raither and Marissa over over at Huntington Bank. I
- 38:34mean, they're the title sponsor. They said it wasn't even a question.
- 38:37They said, absolutely what we say. And then you know, there's so
- 38:40many other sponsors. I mean Nel Chilton, who you know passed away her
- 38:45foundation sponsored Jason Adams, who's going to go and film this for us,
- 38:50and he really has done so much. I don't know if you've seen the
- 38:53videos he's done in the past, but it literally gets me choked up every
- 38:58time I watch it. He is a master his craft, just like we
- 39:00all are at ours, and he captured everything, and hopefully this year he'll
- 39:07he'll capture, you know, a victory for us and the and the story
- 39:09will right itself, you know, a little old guy from Charles and West
- 39:13Virginia against you know, these other chefs from these big cities. I could,
- 39:16for some reason, I think that you should include Tony Kari in this,
- 39:19and you should have after you. I think I could hear I could
- 39:22just hear Kariti saying after hopefully after he wins. You know, it's a
- 39:25great day to be a mountaineer wherever you may be. And this is a
- 39:29Marshall guy, but's saying that. But I know, but but I know
- 39:30what that means, you know. And I was lucky enough to meet the
- 39:34three guys and Tony and I were talking and he's a big foodie and oh
- 39:37yes, it has been to the restaurant and we just literally sat and people
- 39:43we talked about food for I don't even know if we talked about anything else
- 39:46other than food, right, you know, that's it is. This is
- 39:51awesome. It's awesome for everybody, and it's something that everybody can get behind,
- 39:54and it's you knowfully, if we win, we win, and it's
- 39:58absolutely fantastic. But we've really already won. Well you put that light on
- 40:01West Virginia, and you know, you hear the old cliche, Well,
- 40:05it's an honor just to be nominated whatever. But this is a totally different
- 40:07thing because if you look at the Oscars or whatever, people know that those
- 40:10people that are on stage or the Grammys, they know that they're the best
- 40:14of what they do. With a situation like this, I don't know that.
- 40:17And this again goes goes back to Chelsea Ruby and Evan you can wait.
- 40:22I don't know that people thought about Charleston, West Virginia is in there
- 40:25with Charlotte and Nashville and Atlanta. I mean, I like to look at
- 40:30it and at risk of aciding too much importance to it, I don't think
- 40:35you because we're now starting to see, you know, with the kids cooking
- 40:38classes that we do during regatta. We have a kid's cooking competition, and
- 40:44now I think we have one of the participants that participated the first year that
- 40:47is now working with Paul. It's it's so much more than just the culinary
- 40:57scene. I think it's building a culture and a community, and it's giving
- 41:00our next generation a vibrant and thriving area in which to hopefully remain and call
- 41:07home. And I think that you can't undersell this moment, and it's it's
- 41:16one. It's just incredible for me to be to play a small part in
- 41:22it. But we're seeing payoff and in ways that I don't think we anticipated
- 41:28as the city of Charleston. Yeah, I mean, we have one hundred
- 41:30people that show up to our you know, let's get cooking on the first
- 41:35you know, the first class was last month. People are excited about it,
- 41:38and you look at why people travel. Culinary food is now top three
- 41:45and now not only myself, but you have Appalachian Kitchen and Snowshoe that was
- 41:50nominated this year. You have obviously Lowriries who was nominated last year with me.
- 41:55Lowry's has been at the top of their game for you know, since
- 41:59Otis had it. But you look at the consistency and the quality of that
- 42:04kind of restaurant and if I can help make all of our restaurants bigger,
- 42:08make all of our restaurants busier, if they come because they're going to the
- 42:13capital market and come to ten ten or go to sohos or vice versa.
- 42:16I mean, that's the name of the game, is getting more people here
- 42:20to West Virginia. I think people have a preconceived notion of what they're going
- 42:24to get or what they think West Virginia is, and a lot of times
- 42:29that's not always the positive side. The road kick in the dancing outlaw,
- 42:35right you know, we're not that. We are a force to be reckoned
- 42:37with in tourism right now, we have natural beauty. I think you know,
- 42:42Anthony Bourdain said it when he came here. West Virginia was always the
- 42:45place that somebody came and took something and left with it our natural resources.
- 42:52Now, I hope they come and what they take is a memory, what
- 42:55they take is a little piece of you know, oh my gosh, we
- 43:00want to come back because West Virginia has this innate sense of hospitality that is
- 43:05second to none. Yep, you're absolutely right about that. All right,

- 47:36phone with the domes happening tomorrow. I'll be down there with Assistertation nine eighty
- 47:38seven a Mountain Wild, wonderful classic rock. But tomorrow it is take a
- 47:42kid fishing Day. It's free fishing day in West Virginia. Mister outdoors,
- 47:45the Hall of Famer Chris Lawrence is here. Hey man, what up?
- 47:49How you doing? Buddy? I'm good, there are you? I'm doing
- 47:51good? And Rob exactly mister Hall of Famer and Robrial Yeah, I actually
- 47:58that's Rob fishing. Yes, I love that Rob fishing reel a host of
- 48:04up real early ninety six to one kws. You guys are going to be
- 48:07doing some fishing. Mark, Chris, I'm gonna start with you. How
- 48:08do this whole thing start? It was an idea that Rob's predecessor, a
- 48:14Wolf Bowers. He loved to fish and I love to fish, and he
- 48:17said, why don't we do something? And I think Dale Cooper was in
- 48:21on the brainstorming session too. They said, why don't we just do something
- 48:24to get people to get their kids together and just do something. And since
- 48:30this weekend is free fishing weekend, we've always centered it on that, and
- 48:35we just said, let's us have people come out on the free fishing day
- 48:37and bring their kids and go fishing, and we can we can't really provide
- 48:40the rod and reel to them, but most people can get that for a
- 48:45reasonable price. I mean, you know, twenty bucks. You're outfitted and
- 48:47ready to go with everything you need and we'll provide the bait. And if
- 48:52you want to come to Coonskin Park tomorrow from ten to noon. Even if
- 48:55you don't know how to fish, I know how, Rob knows how we
- 49:00can. We can bait your hook and take fish off and that will be
- 49:02uh you know. That way you don't have to worry about doing something wrong
- 49:06or you can just focus on having a good time with your little ones.
- 49:07And the weather's going to be great. That's what they tell me. What
- 49:10they tell me, Rob, I love that we have an in house expert,
- 49:15so it isn't the biggest fear of trying anything new for somebody just not
- 49:20knowing what you're doing and looking silly. Well, we couldn't find anybody better
- 49:23to looking silly. We're on the radio for a reason. But you know,
- 49:30we couldn't find any better to give you the tips and tricks to get
- 49:32started. So if you've never fished before, this this is great for you
- 49:37know, kids of all ages two to ninety two and get the kids outside,
- 49:40you know. Yeah, And that's the thing. And actually Chris is
- 49:44going to be there with a net and when they come they have to put
- 49:45their devices inside the net. Is that right? Yeah? And then we're
- 49:49gonnaiate that into the water. No, Notiva, But I meant atte is
- 49:53she anyway? In all seriousness, in all seriousness. So we have a
- 49:59really problem, a big problem, maybe less or so in West Virginia getting
- 50:02kids out of the dang house and wanting to do something. Yeah, And
- 50:07it's and I can't. I guess it's just because I'm showing my age.
- 50:12I don't recall. I mean when I was a kid, I would have
- 50:15never dreamed on a pretty day of being inside. Oh now no, Well,
- 50:17first of all, my dad would have thrown us out, locked the
- 50:21door. But it's happened to me and my grandfather. Literally on a nice
- 50:24day. If I was hanging out with my grandfather, which I did sometimes
- 50:27in the summer, my grandfather would come in and turn off the TV and
- 50:30say get outside, yeah, and don't come back in until dark. Yeah.
- 50:34And then if you and if you said I'm bored there's nothing to do,
- 50:37my dad could find you something to do. You never you never said
- 50:39that around my dad. But I spent my entire childhood on a creek,
- 50:44whether it was fishing or just wading in the water, turned over rocks,
- 50:47looking for crawdads, trapsing through the woods looking for helgrimites, looking for worms,
- 50:54all the things that I did as a kid. It just doesn't I
- 50:59had so much fun and have such great memories that I can't imagine a kid
- 51:02not doing that. I think you've been deprived of your jiltimes. They just
- 51:06need a little push to show it exactly. Yeah, And especially those that
- 51:09are under maybe the age of eight, seven six, If you if you
- 51:14take them out and start pointing things out to them, they're fascinating and they
- 51:17pick up on stuff quickly and they want to learn. And once they get
- 51:21interested and they want to learn more and more and more. And that's the
- 51:22whole idea of why they have free Fishing weekend is to give you an excuse
- 51:28to get out there with your kids and let them get part of the pun
- 51:30hooked on it. Because there's nothing like that tug on the end of the
- 51:35line that'll make you want to come back and do it and do it even
- 51:37more. And the one thing is, Dave, like you said, a
- 51:39lot of us grew up fishing, but as we got older and suddenly we
- 51:45had kids, life, life, happens, and unfortunately, the first casualty
- 51:49of that is people stop going fishing. Well, now this weekend, you
- 51:52don't have to buy a fishing license. You can simply go fishing, take
- 51:57your kids and without having to buy a license. You realize that you probably
- 52:00shouldn't have given this up. You should have given something else. Yeah,
- 52:04and it starts at what time? It's ten to noon? Ten to noon
- 52:07and Rob, low impact, low cost, sunlight and fresh air are good
- 52:12for your mental health. You brought up helger mites. I don't think we
- 52:15need to bring anybody's religion into this. Maybe the first time the word helga
- 52:17mites has ever been on this show. Guys, appreciate you and we will.
- 52:22We'll be out there tomorrow looking forward to Chris Lawrence, Rob Reel uh
- 52:27So. I appreciate everybody who had a loaded up. Should they appreciate everybody
- 52:30for being here. My producer was Ryan Nicholson. Ryan, thank you so
- 52:31much. Hoppy coming up a talk line of ten oh six. If you
