Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Fasting in the Sadhana of the Integral Yoga: Impact on Vital Energy and Physical Body
Transcript
- 0:00Fasting has often been utilized by spiritual and religious
- 0:04practitioners as a way of gaining some measure of control
- 0:08over the vital desires, cravings, and urges, as well as
- 0:13a means for increasing the vital and mental energy available to
- 0:16them. In some cases, it has been used
- 0:20to induce altered states of awareness to help achieve vision
- 0:25and clarity of purpose by the seeker.
- 0:29At the same time, since much of the history of spiritual
- 0:32practice has been focused on liberation and a virtual
- 0:36abandonment of life in the world, not much attention was
- 0:40being paid to the downsides of fasting, including weakening of
- 0:45the body and upsetting of the nervous, vital and mental
- 0:49balance of the being. For a practitioner of the
- 0:53integral yoga, which aims at transformation of life rather
- 0:57than abandonment of life, this disregard of the negative
- 1:01aspects of fasting as a means of sadhna cannot be accepted.
- 1:08The science of Ayurveda describes different body types
- 1:12that have differing needs in order to maintain and restore
- 1:15their physical balance and well-being.
- 1:18Wata, Pitta, and Kappa types therefore respond differently to
- 1:23any kind of dietary regimen, such as fasting.
- 1:29Kappa types, which tend to hold more body weight and bulk, may
- 1:34benefit from moderate fasting, which may help them increase
- 1:38energy, burn off excess weight, and maintain an optimal balance.
- 1:44On the other hand, Wata types, who already tend toward less
- 1:49body weight and a more mobile nervous energy, are less able to
- 1:53sustain any form of fasting. The more they try to implement a
- 1:58fasting routine, the more chance they have of becoming imbalanced
- 2:03and exhibiting nervous reactions or experiencing an inability to
- 2:08concentrate. Pitta types may get caught up in
- 2:11the process and overpower the body to achieve some goal or
- 2:15ambition, thus potentially harming the body, the nervous
- 2:20envelope and the mental stability through excessive
- 2:24fasting. For the spiritual seeker, it is
- 2:28useful to understand this dynamic of fasting in relation
- 2:31to body type and the forms of response the body and vital
- 2:35being give when subjected to any kind of fasting regimen, but
- 2:40particularly any of the more extreme forms of fasting.
- 2:45For all body types, a reasonable approach is to maintain the
- 2:50balance and health of the body and holding a strong foundation
- 2:55as the basis for the spiritual development.
- 2:58Instead of any form of vital grasping or mental ambition
- 3:02around achieving spiritual results, which may tend to
- 3:06accentuate attempts to push the body, including the use of
- 3:10fasting to gain new experiences and energies.
- 3:14A more moderate view that focuses on the spiritual
- 3:17aspiration and receptivity and concurrently creates a solid
- 3:23basis to hold the energy that the divine force brings into the
- 3:28being is a more useful approach for long term development,
- 3:34Srioro Bindu observes quote. It is a fact that by fasting, if
- 3:40the mind and the nerves are solid or the will force dynamic,
- 3:44one can get for a time into a state of inner energy and
- 3:48receptivity which is alluring to the mind.
- 3:52And the usual reactions of hunger, weakness, intestinal
- 3:56disturbance, et cetera, can be wholly avoided.
- 4:01But the body suffers by diminution and there can easily
- 4:05develop in the vital A morbid over strain condition due to the
- 4:09inrush of more vital energy than the nervous system can
- 4:12assimilate or coordinate. Nervous people should avoid the
- 4:17temptation to fast. It is often accompanied or
- 4:21followed by delusions and a loss of balance, Especially if
- 4:26there's a motive of hunger strike or that element comes in.
- 4:30Fasting becomes perilous, for it is then an indulgence of a vital
- 4:35movement which may easily become a habit injurious and pernicious
- 4:40to the sadhna. Even if all these reactions are
- 4:44avoided, still there is no sufficient utility in fasting,
- 4:48since the higher energy and receptivity ought to come not by
- 4:53artificial or physical means, but by intensity of the
- 4:57consciousness and strong will for the sadhna.
