- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here, it's Monday, it's the 20th of
- 0:16April, and how good are you for inviting me into your day so
- 0:19that we can do well? Friends, what it is that we do
- 0:22together, which is read God's word.
- 0:24And you might remember from last week that we are ploughing our
- 0:28way through this fascinating adventure as God's people into
- 0:33the promised land in this book of Joshua.
- 0:35And God hands it over to them. And we left off the story after
- 0:41someone had stolen goods from Jericho after God explicitly
- 0:45said not to do that. And God has dealt with them.
- 0:49And now, now the Israelite army will go back to I where they
- 0:53were soundly spanked and possessed that land.
- 0:56And then of course, the locals are going to be terrified and
- 0:58they're going to start forming allegiances and alliances
- 1:02amongst each other to try to do whatever they can to keep these
- 1:05Israelites out. And we are going to see God's
- 1:08people take possession of their land.
- 1:11So Holy Spirit, open us up to learn more about you, to
- 1:16experience you even in this strange story from the Old
- 1:20Testament that feels so long ago.
- 1:22Lord, I pray that you speak to us and reveal yourself to us in
- 1:26a new and fresh way. Alright friends, let's do it.
- 1:31Let's read together Joshua chapter 8.
- 1:44Then the Lord said to Joshua, Do not be afraid or discouraged.
- 1:48Take all your fighting men and attack I, For I have given you
- 1:53the king of I, his people, his town, and his land.
- 1:57You will destroy them as you destroyed Jericho and its king,
- 2:01but this time you may keep the plunder and the livestock for
- 2:05yourselves. Set an ambush behind the town.
- 2:09So Joshua and all the fighting men set out to attack I Joshua
- 2:14chose 30,000 of his best warriors and sent them out at
- 2:17night with these orders. Hide in ambush close behind the
- 2:22town and be ready for action. When our main army attacks, the
- 2:26men of I will come out to fight as they did before, and we will
- 2:30run away from them. We will let them chase us until
- 2:34we have drawn them away from the town, for they will say the
- 2:38Israelites are running away from us as they did before.
- 2:41Then while we are running from them, you will jump up from your
- 2:45ambush and take possession of the town, for the Lord your God
- 2:48will give it to you. Set the town on fire as the lawn
- 2:52has commanded you. Have your orders.
- 2:55So the left and went to the place of ambush between Bethel
- 2:59and the West side of I. But Joshua remained among the
- 3:02people in the camp that night. Early the next morning Joshua
- 3:06roused his men and started toward I, accompanied by the
- 3:10elders of Israel. All the fighting men who were
- 3:13with Joshua marched in front of the town and camped on the north
- 3:17side of I with a valley between them and the town.
- 3:20That night Joshua sent about 5000 men to lie in ambush
- 3:25between Bethel and I on the West side of the town.
- 3:28So they're stationed the main army north of the town and the
- 3:32ambush West of the town. Joshua himself spent that night
- 3:36in the valley. When the king of I saw the
- 3:39Israelites across the valley, he and all his army hurried out
- 3:44early in the morning and attacked the Israelites at a
- 3:46place overlooking the Jordan Valley.
- 3:49But he didn't realise there was an ambush behind the town.
- 3:53Joshua and the Israelite army fled toward the wilderness as
- 3:57though they were badly beaten. Then all the men in the town
- 4:01were called out to chase after them.
- 4:04In this way they were lured away from the town.
- 4:07There was not a man left in I or Bethel who did not chase after
- 4:12the Israelites, and the town was left wide open.
- 4:16Then the Lord said to Joshua, Point a spear in your hand
- 4:19toward I, for I will hand the town over to you.
- 4:24Joshua did as he was commanded. As soon as Joshua gave the
- 4:27signal, all the men in ambush jumped up from their position
- 4:31and poured into the town. They quickly captured it and set
- 4:36it on fire. When the men of I look behind
- 4:39them, smoke from the town was filling the sky, and they had
- 4:42nowhere to go, for the Israelites who had fled in the
- 4:45direction of the wilderness now turned on their pursuers.
- 4:49When Joshua and all the other Israelites saw that the ambush
- 4:52had succeeded and that smoke was rising from the town, they
- 4:56turned and attacked the men of I.
- 4:59Meanwhile the Israelites who were inside the town came out
- 5:02and attacked the enemy from the rear.
- 5:05So the men of I were caught in the middle, with Israelite
- 5:08fighters on both sides. Israel attacked them and not a
- 5:12single person survived or escaped.
- 5:16Only the king of I was taken alive and brought to Joshua.
- 5:21When the Israelite army finished chasing and killing all the men
- 5:24of I in the open fields, they went back and finished off
- 5:28everyone inside. So the entire population of I,
- 5:32including men and women, was wiped out that day, 12,000 in
- 5:37all, For Joshua kept holding out his spear until everyone who had
- 5:41lived in I was completely destroyed.
- 5:44Only the livestock and the treasures of the town were not
- 5:47destroyed, for the Israelites kept these as plunder for
- 5:50themselves. As the Lord had commanded
- 5:52Joshua. Sir Joshua burned the town of I
- 5:56and it became a permanent mound of ruins, desolate to this very
- 6:01day. Joshua impaled the King of Eye
- 6:04on a sharpened pole and left him there until evening.
- 6:08At sunset, the Israelites took down the body as Joshua
- 6:12commanded and threw it in front of the town gate.
- 6:16They piled the great heap of stones over him that can still
- 6:20be seen today. Then Joshua built an altar to
- 6:25the Lord the God of Israel on Mount Ebal.
- 6:29He followed the commands that Moses, the Lord's servant, had
- 6:33written in the Book of Instruction.
- 6:35Make me an altar from stones that are uncut and have not been
- 6:40shaped with iron tools. Then on the altar they presented
- 6:44burnt offerings and peace offerings to the Lord.
- 6:47And as the Israelites watched, Joshua copied on to the stones
- 6:51of the altar the instructions Moses had given him.
- 6:55Then all the Israelites, foreigners and native born
- 6:58alike, along with the elders, officers, and judges, were
- 7:02divided into two groups. One group stood in front of
- 7:06Mount Gerizim, the other in front of Mount Ebal.
- 7:10Each group faced the other, and between them stood the Levitical
- 7:13priests carrying the ark of the Lord's covenant.
- 7:17This was all done according to the commands that Moses, the
- 7:20servant of the Lord, had previously given for blessing
- 7:23the people of Israel. Joshua then read to them all the
- 7:28blessings and curses Moses had written in the Book of
- 7:31Instruction. Every word of every command that
- 7:35Moses had ever given was read to the entire assembly of Israel,
- 7:39including the women and children and the foreigners who lived
- 7:43among them. Our Lord, as we read this
- 7:55chapter, we see that your plans are unexpected and the way that
- 8:00you achieve your outcome, while it might not be what we
- 8:04anticipate, is absolute. Thank you that when you have won
- 8:09victory for us, you have won it absolutely, and that you have
- 8:13invited us into your family and into your Kingdom.
- 8:18And Lord, as we hear about Moses, every time we hear his
- 8:22name, it's Moses the servant of the Lord our Lord.
- 8:28I pray that that would be what people know about us too when
- 8:33they refer to us, that they would refer to us as Your
- 8:36servants. May we just follow you and serve
- 8:41you every day of our life so that we can truly be known for
- 8:47bringing about Your Kingdom and that we can make this world a
- 8:51place just like You want it to be.
- 8:55One act of generosity and grace at a time.
- 9:01We love you and we're so grateful for all that you have
- 9:03done for us, Jesus. And we pray all of this in your
- 9:07saving name, Amen.
