- 0:05Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overlain Journal podcast. I'm your host,
- 0:08Speaker 1: Matt Scott. I'm here with Brian Fulton from Goose Gear,
- 0:11Speaker 1: and I'm stoked to have this guy on. Brian is
- 0:14Speaker 1: a he's like, he's the dude when it comes to
- 0:18Speaker 1: figuring out how to create a livable space out of
- 0:21Speaker 1: the interior of your vehicle, whether that's a Forerunner, it's
- 0:25Speaker 1: a coma that has like an at camper or a
- 0:28Speaker 1: go fast on it. I think you even do some
- 0:30Speaker 1: sprinter stuff. We did a little bit while back, a
- 0:34Speaker 1: little bit, you know, but you know you do all
- 0:36Speaker 1: of these I mean you have so many, I mean
- 0:39Speaker 1: how many skews? Were you telling me that you guys.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Have wear over three thousand skews? Like it's crazy, it's ridiculous.
- 0:46Speaker 2: It's actually pretty stupid.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Like it's a good thing. I mean it is. I
- 0:50Speaker 1: I've done my best to kind of go through what
- 0:52Speaker 1: Goose Gear does and you know, figure out all the
- 0:55Speaker 1: different products, and it's just it's it's it's a there's
- 0:59Speaker 1: a large breath of product.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Now and a special thanks to on X for supporting
- 1:04Speaker 3: this week's podcast. Are you tired of searching for a campsite?
- 1:09Speaker 3: Only to find it packed or off limits. With on
- 1:14Speaker 3: X off Roads new Motorized Dispersed Camping Layer, you can
- 1:18Speaker 3: now see legal off grid camping spots in national forests
- 1:22Speaker 3: right in the app. Plan ahead, avoid the crowds and
- 1:26Speaker 3: camp confidently, knowing you're on public land where it's allowed.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Download on X off Road today and find your own space.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Thanks again, on X, thank you, And like anything that
- 1:41Speaker 1: you want to do in your vehicle, Goose Gear kind
- 1:43Speaker 1: of makes it easy. I'm not aware of anybody else's
- 1:46Speaker 1: doing that. But this podcast isn't necessarily about Goose Gear.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It's more about the things that Brian's learned along the way,
- 1:53Speaker 1: you know, converting these vehicles into a living space. So
- 1:56Speaker 1: you know, we're going to talk about like kind of
- 1:58Speaker 1: wagons like you know, like your Forerunner, your station wagon,
- 2:01Speaker 1: your Grenadier or that kind of thing, some pop top campers,
- 2:05Speaker 1: like the wedge style campers, pickups. We're going to kind
- 2:08Speaker 1: of slowly go through all of it, but we're going
- 2:11Speaker 1: to start with Brian's project right now that he's working on.
- 2:14Speaker 1: You bought a Grenadier, I did, and we're grerds.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Grean nerds. He's the best kind.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I'm not saying that you talked me into it, but
- 2:21Speaker 1: I was like excited about the Grenadier and then like
- 2:24Speaker 1: healthily skeptical.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yes, you were a little more than healthily skeptical. You
- 2:28Speaker 2: were a little little skeptical.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I was skeptical, yes, and then and rightfully.
- 2:33Speaker 2: So it's a first year car from a first year
- 2:35Speaker 2: car company, Like there's there should be some skepticism with that.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Yeah, the steering just sucks, but it's a little it's
- 2:41Speaker 1: a little rough. It's a little rough, but you've kind
- 2:45Speaker 1: of fallen for it. I've kind of fallen for it.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And you cut the roof off of yours, yes, like
- 2:49Speaker 1: at fifty thousand miles, like you have a lot of
- 2:52Speaker 1: miles in years, more than anybody I know.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it gets driven all over the country, trails events,
- 2:58Speaker 2: all of that kind of stuff, just constant driving across
- 3:01Speaker 2: the country.
- 3:02Speaker 1: So with this pop top, you know, the Grenadier becomes
- 3:06Speaker 1: this like this blank canvas. It's boxy. It's actually pretty
- 3:10Speaker 1: wide compared to a lot of vehicles.
- 3:12Speaker 2: It is much wider than most vehicles.
- 3:14Speaker 1: You don't have. You know, the Wrangler is a similar
- 3:17Speaker 1: footprint in terms of maybe the with length all of
- 3:21Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. Yeah, but then you know the
- 3:24Speaker 1: body's literally inboard, right yeah, you have the exier flares
- 3:27Speaker 1: that kind off, and then you have this roll cage
- 3:29Speaker 1: and that was always like the you know, that's always
- 3:35Speaker 1: what sucked about that car in terms of like living space.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Like it's great if you're just using it as a
- 3:39Speaker 1: trail vehicle or whatever, but now we have this Grenadier
- 3:42Speaker 1: and you're doing like a full interior on it.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Oh yeah, absolutely, yeah, we're gonna we built you know,
- 3:48Speaker 2: and it's commonly know as like a troopy interior, right yeah.
- 3:51Speaker 2: The land cruisers from Australia and South Africa and all
- 3:53Speaker 2: that kind of stuff, the Defenders of course, and we've
- 3:56Speaker 2: built a few of those over the years. But this
- 3:58Speaker 2: vehicle when they announced it, it was like, this thing is
- 4:01Speaker 2: a game changer for what we do. Like we live
- 4:03Speaker 2: in the vehicle, right, Everything we do is in the vehicle,
- 4:06Speaker 2: and it's all about a liveability. And when I saw it,
- 4:09Speaker 2: I was just like, holy cow, this thing is unbelievably
- 4:13Speaker 2: amazing for what we do because it's just a huge and.
- 4:16Speaker 1: That tangle payload for it. Yeah, you know, so for
- 4:18Speaker 1: people that don't know, when Brian's saying like a troopy
- 4:21Speaker 1: or like Defender interior. In Australia, it's really common to
- 4:24Speaker 1: do these pop tops, right. They've been getting these kind
- 4:27Speaker 1: of utility vehicles for a long time that in the
- 4:29Speaker 1: US we really haven't gotten. And you'll see this pop
- 4:32Speaker 1: top and they're all you know. The interiors are basically
- 4:35Speaker 1: a rectangle front to back and on one side you'll
- 4:37Speaker 1: have you know, I'm going to say a little counter
- 4:40Speaker 1: and then the other you know, you'll have like a
- 4:42Speaker 1: little seating area. It's a pretty common layout, like it's
- 4:46Speaker 1: a troopy interior, right, Like exactly, it's a thing that
- 4:49Speaker 1: people do. I'm just excited to see you kind of
- 4:51Speaker 1: take your little twist on it.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm excited. It's this as one of those projects
- 4:55Speaker 2: where you know, I've looked forward to it since the
- 4:59Speaker 2: beginning of the the entity or when I first announced
- 5:01Speaker 2: it and I saw it and I was like, oh man,
- 5:02Speaker 2: this is going to be the one. This thing's amazing.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I knew that Alekav was going to be able to
- 5:06Speaker 2: root for it because they do the roofs for.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Everybody else well, because and Rin's like another gre nerd.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Oh he is a grin nerd. Yeah, big time.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Big time guy, big time.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Big time genius, Grinard guy.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Yeah, dang red with his big break.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I know, stupid, I hate that guy. Yeah. No, So
- 5:26Speaker 2: it's it's gonna be an amazing thing. I mean, I'm
- 5:28Speaker 2: looking forward to We're trying to do something. We've done
- 5:32Speaker 2: some similar popped up conversion before for other trucks, and
- 5:35Speaker 2: this one just has so much potent troop interior.
- 5:38Speaker 1: For Carl Tormally at Night trouch ear, that was a
- 5:42Speaker 1: really cool interior that you did on that, and that
- 5:44Speaker 1: was it make us. That's kind of v one for
- 5:47Speaker 1: all this because you haven't really done much other.
- 5:49Speaker 2: No, we haven't. We did it. We did his, We
- 5:51Speaker 2: did another customer who also had a land Cruiser seventy series.
- 5:55Speaker 2: We did both them basically at the same time. And Carl,
- 5:58Speaker 2: he went, he has everyone in. The other guy was
- 6:00Speaker 2: taking his to South America and Central America. And I
- 6:03Speaker 2: actually ran into him a few months ago actually at PNW,
- 6:06Speaker 2: and he had just got done with two years of
- 6:08Speaker 2: living in his truck driving it all over the place
- 6:10Speaker 2: with that interior, and he loved it. Was awesome.
- 6:13Speaker 1: So the base for all of your your stuff, you know,
- 6:17Speaker 1: I was really lucky to be able to go through
- 6:18Speaker 1: the factory a couple months ago, and I was just
- 6:21Speaker 1: there like a week ago. And you have your own extrusions,
- 6:25Speaker 1: you know. I think some people will be like, oh,
- 6:26Speaker 1: it's just like an eighty twenty extrusion that they're buying now,
- 6:29Speaker 1: it's totally different. And then you have your own speck
- 6:32Speaker 1: of plywood, and then you're coating it with your own
- 6:34Speaker 1: type of like bedliner material.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:37Speaker 1: And the thing that I love about that bedliner I
- 6:39Speaker 1: did a I did a Goose gear system in the
- 6:42Speaker 1: back of my grand Ere. It has to draw a fridge.
- 6:44Speaker 1: It's a lot simpler than what you're doing. Yeah, and
- 6:47Speaker 1: your pop top. But I like it because I can
- 6:50Speaker 1: fold I can throw the seats down really quick. I
- 6:52Speaker 1: get the full use of the full length of the truck.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And said, you know, if you just folded the seats
- 6:59Speaker 1: down and the fact or you'd basically have the seat
- 7:01Speaker 1: sitting in the middle of your you know, your load space,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and it's kind of awkward. But I like the bedliner
- 7:07Speaker 1: because I can just throw whatever I want in there. Yeah,
- 7:10Speaker 1: it's throw garbage in there, throw bricks in there or whatever.
- 7:13Speaker 1: And it's really durable.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's I mean, it's the same thing to use
- 7:16Speaker 2: for bedlining material, right, So it's just we spray it
- 7:18Speaker 2: on with a different technique and a different process, and
- 7:21Speaker 2: we use a chemical it's a little different than a
- 7:23Speaker 2: lot of the other companies use and that's what allows
- 7:25Speaker 2: us to get it's where it's a really fine, good texture.
- 7:28Speaker 2: We put it on this thing as we can, but
- 7:30Speaker 2: it's still very good wear and reperation resistance. But we
- 7:33Speaker 2: want to keep the weight down.
- 7:34Speaker 1: So yeah, actually it doesn't like dig into your knees
- 7:36Speaker 1: when you're like kind of crawing in.
- 7:37Speaker 2: The interior like a typical bedliner is really coarse, right,
- 7:40Speaker 2: And this is something we try and we work going
- 7:42Speaker 2: for years to try and get that to where it's
- 7:45Speaker 2: something you're not going to be killing yourself on.
- 7:47Speaker 1: So do you think with your with your grenadier and
- 7:51Speaker 1: the pop top, are you going to keep the kind
- 7:54Speaker 1: of the bedline aesthetic or are you going to go
- 7:57Speaker 1: a little.
- 7:58Speaker 2: More Oh, we're going to go more home style, more
- 8:00Speaker 2: home style. Oh yeah, we wanted to be your home right. So,
- 8:03Speaker 2: like Dan Grek is here right now and he's just
- 8:05Speaker 2: came back from his trip and we built his truck
- 8:08Speaker 2: a couple of years ago with the intent of him
- 8:10Speaker 2: taking or basically this is that was more of like
- 8:12Speaker 2: a V one of V two, I would say, right.
- 8:14Speaker 2: V one was Carl. V two is Dan Grek and
- 8:17Speaker 2: he took it to Iceland and all over the all
- 8:19Speaker 2: over Europe and everything, and he came back and it's
- 8:22Speaker 2: just I mean, it's just a beautiful interior. It held
- 8:24Speaker 2: up well, it looks good. He likes it, and it
- 8:26Speaker 2: looks like a home. And he said that when they
- 8:29Speaker 2: were traveling, they ran into a lot of other people
- 8:31Speaker 2: traveling like them, of course, and most of them were
- 8:35Speaker 2: more sterile looking, right, it just wasn't didn't feel like home.
- 8:38Speaker 2: And that was one of his comments. You know, I
- 8:39Speaker 2: met with him, I say, what do you think? Everything good?
- 8:41Speaker 2: What was there anything you want to change, anything you
- 8:43Speaker 2: had issues with? And he said, you know, everything was good.
- 8:45Speaker 2: We didn't have a lot of stuff, and he had
- 8:47Speaker 2: a couple of comments and suggestions, which is awesome because
- 8:49Speaker 2: that's why we gave it to him. But he he
- 8:51Speaker 2: said that really, when we sit in other people's trucks
- 8:53Speaker 2: and we sit in ours, ours feels like a home.
- 8:56Speaker 2: You know, it's wood cabinetry, it's wood counter tops that
- 9:00Speaker 2: just feels good.
- 9:01Speaker 1: There's something to the warmth of wood. Yeah, Like unlike
- 9:06Speaker 1: our big camper, it's all wood and it's just nice.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Yeah. And what absorbs a lot of noise, it doesn't
- 9:13Speaker 2: absorb a lot of heat or cold, so it always
- 9:15Speaker 2: stays at a good temperature, so you're not getting a
- 9:17Speaker 2: radiation of heat or cold like you will with other materials.
- 9:20Speaker 2: And then it just it's just feels good.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Yeah, because there's always like like there's some campers that
- 9:25Speaker 1: are like their grays and their whites, and then the
- 9:28Speaker 1: lights will be like a really cool temperature, super start
- 9:31Speaker 1: of blue. Yeah, and you get in there and you're
- 9:33Speaker 1: just like, man, like, I feel I feel like I'm
- 9:35Speaker 1: in the back of an ambulance.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Yeah, the back of an ambulance medical clinic.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:39Speaker 2: And that's how people, like our customers describe it that way.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Like when they ask about what we're gonna do for interior,
- 9:43Speaker 2: you know, they're like, well, what are you going to do?
- 9:45Speaker 2: What a kind of colors? You any we're gonna do it.
- 9:47Speaker 2: That's their concern. They don't want it to feel like
- 9:49Speaker 2: a sterile environment like they'ret the dentist office, right. It
- 9:52Speaker 2: needs to feel like home. And that's going to be
- 9:54Speaker 2: the focus. To make it feel like home. Give you
- 9:56Speaker 2: everything you have, all of the excess to everything, and
- 9:59Speaker 2: that's really the biggest thing is right. Everything needs to
- 10:02Speaker 2: be reachable quickly, easily.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Right.
- 10:05Speaker 2: You don't want to have to move something to get
- 10:06Speaker 2: to something. And your house is like that. You have
- 10:09Speaker 2: a drawer for your utensils, right, you have a drawer
- 10:11Speaker 2: for your pots and pans or a shelf, you know,
- 10:13Speaker 2: making thinking like that.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Your pots and pans aren't behind your you know, your
- 10:18Speaker 1: cutlery shelf, you know, or you don't have to move
- 10:20Speaker 1: a bag to get.
- 10:21Speaker 2: To it, exactly. You don't put your recovery geither. You
- 10:24Speaker 2: put those things somewhere else. You put all your living
- 10:26Speaker 2: stuff that you're us every single day where it's quickly accessible.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Yeah, it's fine. Like you end up when you're traveling
- 10:32Speaker 1: in the road, you end up with the daily routine,
- 10:34Speaker 1: you know, when you're when you're building like let's just
- 10:38Speaker 1: say like migrantedier. That's just like a really basic setup.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I'm going to throw some camping gear out there, I'm
- 10:43Speaker 1: going to grow out for a weekend trip in that.
- 10:45Speaker 1: But when you're doing something where you're really using the
- 10:48Speaker 1: word living. Yeah, there's this routine that you have. You
- 10:53Speaker 1: still have to brush your teeth in the morning and
- 10:55Speaker 1: at night, you know, you have you have toiletryes, you
- 10:58Speaker 1: have clothes, you have to change your clothes, you have
- 11:00Speaker 1: to you have to you know, you have to clean yourself,
- 11:03Speaker 1: you have to. You have all these things that you
- 11:05Speaker 1: have to do and you can't prioritize like maybe on
- 11:11Speaker 1: like a vehicle for like technical four wheel drive, you
- 11:14Speaker 1: prioritize access to recovery gear because that may be the
- 11:17Speaker 1: thing that you need to get at very quickly, but
- 11:22Speaker 1: you don't really you're not using that every day, like
- 11:25Speaker 1: you're using your toothbrush every day. Like you have to.
- 11:28Speaker 1: You have to consider these.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Things, you know, Yeah, exactly. And that's the biggest thing.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Like even when even our current systems we design and
- 11:34Speaker 2: and we you know, we'll recommend this to anybody, right,
- 11:36Speaker 2: whether you're doing yourself where you're buying a system or
- 11:39Speaker 2: someone else's. Like you're going to cook eat three times
- 11:43Speaker 2: a day? Probably, yeah, most people, Right, I'm eating four
- 11:46Speaker 2: or five times a day. So like I want to
- 11:48Speaker 2: have instant access to my fridge, to my stove, to
- 11:51Speaker 2: all my cooking gear and so everything in the back
- 11:54Speaker 2: of my truck right now, which isn't set up for
- 11:55Speaker 2: the pop top, but as set up for our typical
- 11:58Speaker 2: system is instant access to the stuff use every single day. Right,
- 12:02Speaker 2: you have to have quick access to it. Toiletries are
- 12:04Speaker 2: in a specific place, so you need to you know,
- 12:06Speaker 2: brush your teeth, right, Yeah, you don't want to look
- 12:09Speaker 2: for that. You don't want to move stuff around. It's
- 12:11Speaker 2: got to be quick and easy.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's just interesting. There's just so many different
- 12:18Speaker 1: ways to do all this stuff. Right, So we're not
- 12:20Speaker 1: saying that like this is this is the thing that
- 12:23Speaker 1: works for everyone, but correct, you know, when it comes
- 12:26Speaker 1: to like these longer trips, like that's that's really important.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Yeah, So how are you finding, Like, you know, you
- 12:33Speaker 1: guys are really known for kind of interiors for a
- 12:36Speaker 1: lot of the wedge campers, whether it's a go Fast
- 12:38Speaker 1: camper at Camper Super Pacific. I mean, you guys kind
- 12:42Speaker 1: of you don't really like make stuff specifically for the camper.
- 12:46Speaker 2: It's more the.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Bedsize, uh, for the truck that it's going in, because
- 12:51Speaker 1: that's what really interfaces with But like you know, with
- 12:54Speaker 1: the Grenadier How are you finding that different from like
- 12:58Speaker 1: these wedge campers because the layouts I mean, I guess
- 13:01Speaker 1: similar in some ways, but also completely different.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it is. It is different because you want to
- 13:07Speaker 2: spend in my opinion, right, this is just how I'm
- 13:10Speaker 2: going to build it for how I would camp. Right,
- 13:12Speaker 2: You're going to cook. You know, when we go camping,
- 13:14Speaker 2: we want to be outside the vehicle. Yeah, right, we're
- 13:16Speaker 2: going we're driving somewhere to get to somewhere beautiful. We
- 13:19Speaker 2: want to be outside. We're going to be sitting on
- 13:21Speaker 2: a chair, relaxing you hopefully by campfire if possible, looking
- 13:25Speaker 2: at the view, absorbing the view. So having the ability
- 13:28Speaker 2: to cook inside and outside is going to be critical, right,
- 13:32Speaker 2: because there are times when the wind is blowing thirty
- 13:34Speaker 2: miles an hour and it's sleep sideways and you want
- 13:37Speaker 2: to go inside and cook inside. So you want to
- 13:39Speaker 2: have both of those access So we're going to design
- 13:41Speaker 2: around that. But it's as far as virtue difference between
- 13:46Speaker 2: a wedge camper and the Grenadier, it's just it's very
- 13:52Speaker 2: similar as far as the living system. But because you're
- 13:55Speaker 2: connected to the front of the cab, you have space
- 13:58Speaker 2: that you can now utilize the seats of the vehicle.
- 14:01Speaker 2: So like you can take certain you can have bags
- 14:03Speaker 2: that you're going to travel with, especially if you're doing
- 14:04Speaker 2: a longer trip you get more gear, you have a
- 14:06Speaker 2: place to put it, but you can actually take stuff
- 14:08Speaker 2: and put it in the front seats. Yeah, get it
- 14:10Speaker 2: out of the rear so the rear is as open
- 14:12Speaker 2: as possible, as little clutter as possible, so that you
- 14:15Speaker 2: have a.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Living six stuffel bag with your clothes can then get
- 14:19Speaker 1: put in the front seat and you're traveling to the
- 14:22Speaker 1: person while there's two seats, but there you go.
- 14:24Speaker 2: You're set and it's out of the way, right, And
- 14:26Speaker 2: so making use of that space is great because now
- 14:28Speaker 2: you've cleared up the living space where you're actually living.
- 14:32Speaker 2: The other thing is just having a system where you
- 14:34Speaker 2: can stand up right in a wedge camper. Right, you
- 14:36Speaker 2: can do that in the grenadeer or the pop top,
- 14:38Speaker 2: you can do it in a wedge camper. So being
- 14:40Speaker 2: able to stand up, change, get dressed, put your shoes on,
- 14:42Speaker 2: all of those kinds of things, that's where those things
- 14:44Speaker 2: really come into play.
- 14:45Speaker 1: As far as usability, I think one of the nicest
- 14:49Speaker 1: things to have when you're when you're traveling full time
- 14:53Speaker 1: or long term travel sounds simple, but it's it's the
- 14:58Speaker 1: place to change. Yeah, especially if you're like if you're social,
- 15:03Speaker 1: you know you're you're doing I mean actually like scratch that,
- 15:06Speaker 1: like even like weekend trips. You're doing weekend trips with
- 15:08Speaker 1: your buddies, and you know, let's just say your wife
- 15:12Speaker 1: or your daughter or somebody is coming along. Or even
- 15:14Speaker 1: if you know, I don't want to change in front
- 15:16Speaker 1: of people, I guess I shouldn't say. You know, women
- 15:19Speaker 1: is not wanting to change it for people. Nobody wants
- 15:21Speaker 1: to change in front of people. But the ability to
- 15:23Speaker 1: just like be able to stand up and change your
- 15:26Speaker 1: clothes without people seeing is like it's actually kind of
- 15:30Speaker 1: really nice. It is really nice. Like it's very very
- 15:33Speaker 1: nice changing your clothes. And a rooftop tent is like
- 15:36Speaker 1: it's like trying to fit a caterpillar into a sleeping bag.
- 15:40Speaker 1: You know, it's like you're just kind of like wiggling
- 15:43Speaker 1: and trying to figure it out, and I don't.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Know, it's a little tough. I mean, there's you know,
- 15:49Speaker 2: it's it's there's different types of camping, right, different types
- 15:53Speaker 2: of affordabilities and all those kinds of things. So people
- 15:56Speaker 2: we see customers graduate over time. They graduate and they
- 15:59Speaker 2: go from this to this to this to this, and
- 16:01Speaker 2: they move their way up and they buy different qualities
- 16:05Speaker 2: of life as they progress in not only the overland
- 16:08Speaker 2: but in their financial capacities and all that kind of stuff.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Yeah, because this stuff isn't cheap, you know now. I
- 16:14Speaker 1: mean like with you guys, like you just have so
- 16:16Speaker 1: many different parts that you're like one of I think
- 16:19Speaker 1: that maybe build don't realize that you're not, Like, do
- 16:20Speaker 1: you have a big production run on this stuff? Like
- 16:23Speaker 1: you have so many options because the designs are all
- 16:26Speaker 1: made to order and pretty custom you know.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly, everything's custom fit, right, So every vehicle
- 16:32Speaker 2: is different. There's not very many things that are interchangeable.
- 16:34Speaker 2: So we have to have all those different skew count
- 16:38Speaker 2: of different options so that we can fulfill the needs
- 16:41Speaker 2: of as many people as possible.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Yeah, Like, are the what are the mistakes that you
- 16:47Speaker 1: think people make when doing like an interior build out
- 16:51Speaker 1: on a vehicle. Oh?
- 16:52Speaker 2: Man, that's a good one.
- 16:54Speaker 1: So I guess it depends on the type of vehicle, you.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Know, that's part of it. I think it's it's really
- 17:01Speaker 2: you know, a lot of time when we build something,
- 17:03Speaker 2: the first thing that people are thinking of, right is
- 17:05Speaker 2: they're thinking of recovery gear, and they're thinking of tools,
- 17:09Speaker 2: and those are all incredibly important, right, recovery gear, tools,
- 17:12Speaker 2: Like clearly you need those things a way to air up,
- 17:14Speaker 2: air down. But a lot of people start out they
- 17:17Speaker 2: buy a drawer and they think, oh, I'm just going
- 17:18Speaker 2: to throw this in a drawer, any drawer, or they
- 17:20Speaker 2: build their own drawer. And I did this. I'm guilty
- 17:22Speaker 2: of this. When I first started, I didn't know anything. Right.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Well, you're kind of told, oh, you've got to be
- 17:26Speaker 1: able to get to this stuff really quick.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Oh really quick. Like everyone's stressing how quick you need
- 17:31Speaker 2: to get your tools and your recovery gear. And it's like, okay,
- 17:33Speaker 2: I haven't just mind.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Find it to be that way.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Like you need to slow down if you need tools
- 17:39Speaker 2: or recovery gear. You're better off unless someone's sliding off
- 17:42Speaker 2: a hill, which at that point you probably shouldn't connect
- 17:45Speaker 2: to them anyway. Yeah, I mean, let's be honest, but
- 17:48Speaker 2: like if they're in a place where they need to
- 17:49Speaker 2: be pulled down, you're really not in a hurry anymore.
- 17:52Speaker 1: That the vehicle is stuck.
- 17:54Speaker 2: It's not going anywhere.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, you're going to be holding potentially some
- 17:58Speaker 1: people up, but you know likely they're with their traveling
- 18:01Speaker 1: with you and nobody can get through. Yeah, it's just
- 18:04Speaker 1: I have to say that I kind of felt guilty
- 18:07Speaker 1: for that.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Oh I was too.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Like my first like like big big trip that I did,
- 18:13Speaker 1: where I built the vehicle and I did everything. We
- 18:15Speaker 1: drove around Australia off right when I was running a
- 18:17Speaker 1: magazine over there, and the first couple of trips I did,
- 18:20Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, okay, yeah, like best practice, I've got
- 18:22Speaker 1: to have my recovery gear in my drawers and it
- 18:24Speaker 1: needs to be the first thing when I pull it
- 18:26Speaker 1: out because it's gonna save me two milliseconds.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it doesn't matter.
- 18:32Speaker 1: By the end of the trip, I think we're gone
- 18:34Speaker 1: for six months or something, like I don't even know
- 18:36Speaker 1: where that stuff was, Like it was so buried, you know,
- 18:39Speaker 1: Like when we crossed the Simpson Desert in a troopy
- 18:42Speaker 1: that had like five horsepower maybe maybe fifteen maybe fifteen. Yeah,
- 18:47Speaker 1: Like I definitely like, you know, the max tracks were
- 18:49Speaker 1: already outside. We had a winch, you know, so then
- 18:52Speaker 1: you're like, you're you know, your shackles, ropes, that kind
- 18:55Speaker 1: of stuff. Yeah, like if i'm if I'm actively crossing
- 18:59Speaker 1: you know, this some desert, Like, yeah, I'll just pull
- 19:02Speaker 1: that bag out exactly. But you can kind of bury
- 19:06Speaker 1: that stuff.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Yeah, you can. Like mine's actually between is wedged behind
- 19:09Speaker 2: my driver's seat.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Right, it's still accessible and it's kind of wedged in.
- 19:13Speaker 1: It's kind of the space for it because it ends
- 19:15Speaker 1: up being that like driver seat cubby size thing.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and it just works. And so, like I said,
- 19:23Speaker 2: everyone fills their doors with all those things because they
- 19:25Speaker 2: think they need to. Yeah, and you do need to
- 19:27Speaker 2: have access those things. But you know, if your truck
- 19:30Speaker 2: is broken, any tools, you were definitely not in a hurry, right,
- 19:33Speaker 2: it's not going anywhere, so slow down and think so
- 19:36Speaker 2: I take all of that stuff. And also, this stuff's
- 19:38Speaker 2: typically heavy, you know, unless you're all synthetic on your
- 19:41Speaker 2: recovery gear, which a lot of people are now thanks
- 19:43Speaker 2: to a lot of improvements and technology, not carry a
- 19:46Speaker 2: bunch of you know, fifty pounds shackles around, but all
- 19:49Speaker 2: the tools tools are heavy. Those are on the floor
- 19:52Speaker 2: foot floor of the second row seat, on the ground
- 19:55Speaker 2: as low as possible, better wag distribution, getting that weight
- 19:58Speaker 2: out of the back, and then still like your kitchen, man,
- 20:01Speaker 2: it's about brushing your teeth, making food. That's always the
- 20:05Speaker 2: number one concern for us.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I mean, like what else do you see
- 20:10Speaker 1: people doing. I mean, you know there's a lot of
- 20:12Speaker 1: people that are going to listen to this that you know,
- 20:18Speaker 1: their budget may just allow them to do a DIY thing, right,
- 20:22Speaker 1: And I think that that's great, And I'd love to
- 20:24Speaker 1: spend a little bit like getting advice from the dude,
- 20:27Speaker 1: like what is your advice for the DIY guys that
- 20:29Speaker 1: are building, you know, like like what kind of materials
- 20:32Speaker 1: should they be looking at using. I'm going to let
- 20:35Speaker 1: you run from there.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, so DIY. I've actually talked to some customers,
- 20:39Speaker 2: especially in the early days when I was more active
- 20:41Speaker 2: and I was literally the person answering the phone in
- 20:43Speaker 2: the beginning, right, So I'd have people call and they're like,
- 20:46Speaker 2: you know, I saw a guy was commenting out posts.
- 20:48Speaker 2: He's like, yea, I'm gonna build my own applywood. And
- 20:50Speaker 2: I'd literally just reached out to the guy and I
- 20:51Speaker 2: was like, hey, if you're going to do it, aupplywood.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Here's how you should do it, and he was like,
- 20:55Speaker 2: why are you telling me this? I'm like, I mean,
- 20:57Speaker 2: I just happen to have time right now, and I
- 20:58Speaker 2: feel like just helping you out. It's like, you know,
- 21:01Speaker 2: those days are a little harder about nice guy. Yeah,
- 21:03Speaker 2: I'm trying to you know. Plus I enjoy it, right,
- 21:05Speaker 2: And we built our first system out of plywood, right,
- 21:07Speaker 2: and we own a cabinet shop, countertop shop, and it
- 21:10Speaker 2: was pretty easy for us because we have machines and automation.
- 21:12Speaker 2: We build lots and lots of cabinets. But you know,
- 21:15Speaker 2: building on plywood is actually a really good material. The
- 21:18Speaker 2: key with plywood is that if you're going to do
- 21:20Speaker 2: it in your diy, like you want to do a
- 21:23Speaker 2: dato joint where you're actually putting a notch in the plywood,
- 21:27Speaker 2: and you're actually putting it's it's kind of hard to explain.
- 21:29Speaker 2: You're basically putting a channel. So where one piece meets
- 21:32Speaker 2: another piece perpendicular, that piece of ply it falls into
- 21:35Speaker 2: that little channel and then you lather as much glue
- 21:38Speaker 2: as you can in there and then screw it and
- 21:40Speaker 2: the guru the glue and that channel is going to
- 21:42Speaker 2: make it unbelievably stronger. Right, So when we do industrial
- 21:46Speaker 2: cab or in institutional cabinets for like hospitals, which the
- 21:50Speaker 2: doors are getting opened and closed a thousand times a day, Right,
- 21:53Speaker 2: those cabins have be built, they're built to a different standard.
- 21:56Speaker 2: That's how we would build it out of plywo That's
- 21:58Speaker 2: how we built our first box out of plywood. You
- 22:00Speaker 2: can do it on table saw. You don't need specialized tools, right,
- 22:03Speaker 2: you can do it on table saw. I would say,
- 22:05Speaker 2: you know a lot of people want drawers, drawers, drawers, drawers, drawers,
- 22:08Speaker 2: drawers and drawers are great, but you probably don't need five. Yeah, right,
- 22:13Speaker 2: unless you're a chef and you're carrying and you're feeding
- 22:16Speaker 2: twenty five or thirty people on trail every single day.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Different story. But if it's just you and your family,
- 22:22Speaker 2: build what you need.
- 22:23Speaker 1: I've been digging those step twenty two kind of bag
- 22:26Speaker 1: box things where yes, you know, I've always thought that's
- 22:29Speaker 1: it's interesting for the DIY guys. Don't spend the money, time, effort,
- 22:35Speaker 1: weight complexity on the drawer slides because bags in just
- 22:39Speaker 1: slide a couple.
- 22:41Speaker 2: If you took the same box and you left two
- 22:43Speaker 2: openings for two drawers side by side, which is you
- 22:46Speaker 2: know what, Arb, And there's a lot of side by
- 22:48Speaker 2: side dress frontun or all those guys, they make a
- 22:49Speaker 2: lot of side by side drawers and you just don't
- 22:51Speaker 2: put the drawers in. Yeah, And that's actually what our
- 22:54Speaker 2: very first system was. It had one little drawer in
- 22:56Speaker 2: the middle and had two cubbies on either side. The
- 22:59Speaker 2: very first drawer we ever made, right, and it was
- 23:01Speaker 2: literally just for bins that slid into those holes. Yeah,
- 23:04Speaker 2: it was inexpensive, it was super easy to build, and
- 23:08Speaker 2: it worked right. And it wasn't pansy, wasn't flashy, but
- 23:11Speaker 2: it worked.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I think, I mean obviously like functionality is like
- 23:15Speaker 1: I think, particularly the dayside, like you're focusing on functionality,
- 23:18Speaker 1: Like yeah, I mean there's diy guys that just do
- 23:21Speaker 1: like like amazing work Like some of the interior systems
- 23:24Speaker 1: I've seen. It makes me wonder if these guys were
- 23:27Speaker 1: cabinet makers. Yeah right, ye are like super like super
- 23:32Speaker 1: well done. But you know, I if I was putting
- 23:36Speaker 1: myself on those shoes, I would just try and keep
- 23:38Speaker 1: it as simple as I could, you know, Like I
- 23:40Speaker 1: like the idea of kind of like almost I'm going
- 23:43Speaker 1: to switch from calling it drawers to calling it a
- 23:44Speaker 1: platform and you can put stuff underneath exactly. I think
- 23:47Speaker 1: that's that's really powerful.
- 23:50Speaker 2: That's very powerful. And it's also less weight. Yeah, right,
- 23:53Speaker 2: so there's less complexity, less weight because you have a drawer,
- 23:55Speaker 2: you have a box inside of a box, and so
- 23:58Speaker 2: you're adding weight, complexity and just more money and you
- 24:00Speaker 2: don't necessarily need it and having a platform and you know, really,
- 24:04Speaker 2: at the end of the day, less is more right,
- 24:06Speaker 2: which is funny because we sell a lot of things,
- 24:09Speaker 2: but less is more right. You don't necessarily need all
- 24:12Speaker 2: of those things. You actually literally don't need any of them.
- 24:15Speaker 1: You know, it can be nice to have them.
- 24:17Speaker 2: But yeah, it's a very nice convenience factor. Right, it's
- 24:19Speaker 2: a better quality of life.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I was encouragingble. You have to prioritize
- 24:24Speaker 1: the travel and then put the stuff second. Like if
- 24:28Speaker 1: it's doing the trip and you know, building a DIY platform,
- 24:33Speaker 1: we're spending the money. This isn't good for your sales, but.
- 24:36Speaker 2: The trips okay, but it is. It's true, like do
- 24:38Speaker 2: the trip, right, I mean that's you know, my daughter
- 24:41Speaker 2: when we first started, it's like Okay, we're going to
- 24:42Speaker 2: do you know. I talked to her and we had
- 24:44Speaker 2: a fore runner, right, we had a fore runner. We
- 24:46Speaker 2: had a rooftop tent, and we had basicly least expensive
- 24:50Speaker 2: suspension we could buy just to get a little bit
- 24:52Speaker 2: bigger tire, so it just did a little bit better
- 24:54Speaker 2: off road. But that was it. And we had this
- 24:57Speaker 2: one platform and we just lived out a rooftop tent
- 24:59Speaker 2: and we did what thirty some days that first year.
- 25:02Speaker 2: That's all thirty days of camping with my dars. Like,
- 25:04Speaker 2: we're going to do thirty days this year of camping
- 25:06Speaker 2: in our first year. And she's like, why are we
- 25:08Speaker 2: gonna do that? That's like a whole month. Yeah, I was like,
- 25:10Speaker 2: but that's only a weekend every month. It's not that hard, right,
- 25:15Speaker 2: And almost anybody can get out early on a Friday
- 25:18Speaker 2: once a month. So just get in the car and go.
- 25:21Speaker 2: And that's what we did. And obviously, as time progressed
- 25:23Speaker 2: and the company built and all stuff, we built better cars.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Because she's she's kind of always been here with you
- 25:28Speaker 1: on a lot of these trips and yeah, kind of
- 25:31Speaker 1: well more than half her life.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Now, she's been so crazy it's crazy. Yeah, she's twenty
- 25:35Speaker 2: one now, so she started when she was ten. Like
- 25:38Speaker 2: her first expo was eight years ago. She has eight
- 25:40Speaker 2: years of expo experience and she's been to almost every
- 25:43Speaker 2: one of.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Them, Yeah, East Coast, all of them. She could be
- 25:46Speaker 1: the new young sith Lord of overlanding, right.
- 25:49Speaker 2: I know, I'm hoping to pass up a t That's
- 25:53Speaker 2: the hope. So I can go play more and she
- 25:54Speaker 2: can take over.
- 25:55Speaker 4: Yeah, there you go, And a special thanks to Trader
- 25:59Speaker 4: for their support of this week's podcast. One of the
- 26:02Speaker 4: age old problems of vehicle dependent adventure travel is something
- 26:06Speaker 4: that you probably don't think of very often, and that's insurance.
- 26:10Speaker 4: If you've put a lot of money into your truck,
- 26:12Speaker 4: chances are that those modifications aren't covered by your current carrier.
- 26:17Speaker 4: But now there's Tredder. They fill in the gap between
- 26:20Speaker 4: what your car insurance company thinks your truck is worth
- 26:23Speaker 4: and what it is actually worth to you. You don't
- 26:26Speaker 4: have to switch your carrier, and you can use regular
- 26:29Speaker 4: insurers that provide the stock stuff, while Tredder insures the
- 26:34Speaker 4: cool gear. Head to treader dot com and check out
- 26:38Speaker 4: their easy five minute quote process to see if Tredder
- 26:42Speaker 4: is the solution for you again, that's treader dot com,
- 26:45Speaker 4: t R e dd Er dot com. Thank you again
- 26:50Speaker 4: for the support.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Tredder.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Yeah, but you know, so kind of going back over
- 26:58Speaker 1: to talking about kind of the like the SUV side,
- 27:01Speaker 1: So let's move over to like advice for that weekend
- 27:05Speaker 1: guy that's going out, maybe he's doing a week long
- 27:08Speaker 1: trip in the summer, guy or girl. Sorry, like you know,
- 27:12Speaker 1: they're driving it to work, they're you know, they're they're
- 27:16Speaker 1: getting out on their weekends. Like what how does how
- 27:19Speaker 1: does the game change from the full time setup to
- 27:24Speaker 1: kind of that weekend setup, Like how do you usually
- 27:27Speaker 1: advise people that are you know, they just know they're
- 27:30Speaker 1: not going to use it for a month on a time.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's that's a good question because there's a balance, right,
- 27:38Speaker 2: it's a you know, it's a combination of a couple
- 27:40Speaker 2: of things. Is you know, how much money you want
- 27:42Speaker 2: to spend, Like, let's assume they're buying something, well, my stuff,
- 27:44Speaker 2: anyone's stuff, right, it's not necessarily about good gear on
- 27:47Speaker 2: this it's just anyone's gear. It's just a matter of
- 27:49Speaker 2: how much money do you want to spend? Right, what's
- 27:52Speaker 2: your budget. And then do you need to take it
- 27:54Speaker 2: out of the vehicle and put it in the vehicle
- 27:56Speaker 2: when you're not using it? Right are you? Do you
- 27:59Speaker 2: have three kids that you've got to take to all
- 28:02Speaker 2: the different sporting events and you need the rear cargo area. Well,
- 28:06Speaker 2: then like your system as an example, where it's just
- 28:09Speaker 2: a little fridge drawer in a drawer is great because
- 28:12Speaker 2: you still have majority of your cargo area. Plus if
- 28:15Speaker 2: you have kids, you're in any more space. But if
- 28:17Speaker 2: you're just you know, a single person and you want
- 28:19Speaker 2: to go travel, you know, just even just a base
- 28:23Speaker 2: plate and a fridge slide and a fridge, like a
- 28:25Speaker 2: fridge is a game changer, right, I mean not everyone
- 28:27Speaker 2: has to have a fridge. A cooler works great. You know,
- 28:29Speaker 2: there's plenty of great cooler especially for weekend or stuff. Right,
- 28:32Speaker 2: it's a lot cheaper. But having something that's quick and
- 28:36Speaker 2: easy to take in and out is a nice thing. Right.
- 28:39Speaker 2: But you know, less is more is really the biggest thing.
- 28:42Speaker 2: I think this hard explained.
- 28:44Speaker 1: That it sounds a little counterintuitive, but I almost find
- 28:48Speaker 1: that the folks that are going out for the weekends
- 28:50Speaker 1: are the ones that sometimes overbuild. Like I think that
- 28:54Speaker 1: like the Jeep and the fore Runner crowd right now
- 28:56Speaker 1: is the worst that the hatch comes up on the
- 29:00Speaker 1: Forerunner and I'm like, oh wow, you can't even put
- 29:04Speaker 1: a ham sandwich in the back of this thing outside
- 29:07Speaker 1: of a drawer, outside of some like defined space. Yeah,
- 29:12Speaker 1: and I think that there's for the if you're just
- 29:15Speaker 1: doing this kind of cat more casually or like you're
- 29:18Speaker 1: saying every weekend for a month, is still that's a
- 29:20Speaker 1: lot and it's a lot.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Yeah, you're getting a lot of time in the seat
- 29:24Speaker 2: and you're getting a lot of places to go.
- 29:25Speaker 1: I always think lass is a little more you know,
- 29:28Speaker 1: like I think you have to have that kind of
- 29:32Speaker 1: duality of the space for you know, if you're still
- 29:35Speaker 1: using as a regular car.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Most people need their they need their cargo space, so
- 29:39Speaker 2: they're buying an suv. It's not you know, most of
- 29:41Speaker 2: the time, they didn't buy a Forerunner because they wanted
- 29:43Speaker 2: to go camping. Yea, they bought a fore Runner because
- 29:45Speaker 2: it fits their needs.
- 29:47Speaker 1: And then they start making some modifications so you can
- 29:49Speaker 1: go a little further or a little more comfortable off
- 29:52Speaker 1: road exactly exactly.
- 29:54Speaker 2: And that's and that's where going back, like you said,
- 29:56Speaker 2: when you pop you know the lift gate. You see that,
- 29:58Speaker 2: and we see drawers stacked all way the ceiling. And
- 30:01Speaker 2: then you've got you know, a fridge cabinet or a
- 30:03Speaker 2: camkitchen or just a ninety liter fridge and their forerunner
- 30:06Speaker 2: and they're going out for three days and you know
- 30:09Speaker 2: there's you're filling it to where you have nowhere to
- 30:12Speaker 2: put anything you have. You have sleeping bags, you have pillows,
- 30:16Speaker 2: you have blankets, you have just all the other your clothes,
- 30:19Speaker 2: Like those things need a home. Also. Yeah, and if
- 30:22Speaker 2: you've got two kids with you, like we're you going
- 30:24Speaker 2: to put them in their lap?
- 30:25Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 30:26Speaker 2: Yeah, so less do less, do less, do less, do less,
- 30:30Speaker 2: so you can spend more time traveling.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the key thing. I've been with the Grenadier
- 30:35Speaker 1: and my little goose system in the back. I've just
- 30:38Speaker 1: done alue boxes on top of that. I mean I
- 30:40Speaker 1: already had them. You have like kind of the tie
- 30:43Speaker 1: down points you know, around it, so I can like
- 30:46Speaker 1: pretty securely. But then I get another layer that I
- 30:48Speaker 1: can put stuff on top of. Yes, you know, if
- 30:51Speaker 1: it's throwing a big tent, a swag or something that
- 30:55Speaker 1: just rolls up and takes a lot of space, like
- 30:57Speaker 1: like I have the room for it, and that really
- 31:00Speaker 1: encourage people to like think of it being a modular system,
- 31:05Speaker 1: you know, like I don't know.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that's my thoughts. Man, It's true. Keep it modular.
- 31:11Speaker 2: And then also, you know, don't just if you're nude, like,
- 31:15Speaker 2: don't dive in whether you have the money or not
- 31:18Speaker 2: and just buy like, oh, this is the coolest thing
- 31:20Speaker 2: I've ever seen. IM's going to buy this. Yeah, it's
- 31:23Speaker 2: we I have. We have had so many iterations myself,
- 31:26Speaker 2: like I have a whole warehouse full of junk. Yeah,
- 31:30Speaker 2: things that I bought that I thought would be cool
- 31:31Speaker 2: or things that I thought I needed.
- 31:33Speaker 1: And it's not necessarily mistakes. You just like like everybody
- 31:36Speaker 1: is in a different place in life at every different time, right,
- 31:39Speaker 1: Like you may just like need a bunch of stuff
- 31:42Speaker 1: again because you have kids or whatever and you want
- 31:44Speaker 1: to you want a place to put it. But that
- 31:46Speaker 1: modular aspect that you've kind of designed, I think is
- 31:49Speaker 1: really nice. Like I know that I could add more
- 31:51Speaker 1: stuff to mine or I already have the bass plate
- 31:54Speaker 1: and I could take things out, Like I love that
- 31:56Speaker 1: camp kitchen thing that you do. If I was doing
- 31:58Speaker 1: longer trips. Say it has had a roof ten or
- 32:01Speaker 1: whatever that camp kitchen you have with you know, like
- 32:04Speaker 1: the National and a fridge, and it has the Partner
- 32:06Speaker 1: quick partner steel partner steel stove that comes out slides out.
- 32:10Speaker 1: That's really trick. You can add that and you can
- 32:12Speaker 1: take that out.
- 32:13Speaker 2: Yeah, and you can take it out. I mean that's
- 32:15Speaker 2: only four bolts, right, eight bolts if you want to
- 32:17Speaker 2: really get it secure. But like mine's been screwed down
- 32:19Speaker 2: with four bolts forever because it comes in in out
- 32:21Speaker 2: all the time, right, We're always changing stuff for shows.
- 32:24Speaker 2: And that just works great because it's basically a fridge
- 32:27Speaker 2: and a stove. It all slides out. It's one unit.
- 32:30Speaker 2: You have storage space above it. You put a couple
- 32:32Speaker 2: step twenty two bags on top of it. You have
- 32:34Speaker 2: a way to strap them down with our little anchor kits.
- 32:36Speaker 2: And now you've got your whole kitchen on one side.
- 32:38Speaker 2: You've got your stove, your fridge, and your pantry which
- 32:41Speaker 2: is above it. It's everything's there. And that's that's my favorite
- 32:45Speaker 2: device that we've ever created. Because even if you just
- 32:48Speaker 2: did that, like my friend Justin Pitcaren gets, you know,
- 32:50Speaker 2: Justin like he has the base plate and the seed
- 32:53Speaker 2: to delete, right, and he sleeps in basically completely empty.
- 32:57Speaker 2: It's like a flatbed truck and his gratity, right, and
- 33:00Speaker 2: he has just the camp kitchen.
- 33:02Speaker 1: That's it.
- 33:03Speaker 2: And that's like the sweetest little build because it's just
- 33:07Speaker 2: that he's got an allouy box that he steps on
- 33:10Speaker 2: and another alley box that carries some extra gear like
- 33:12Speaker 2: his camp chair and that kind of stuff, Okay, and
- 33:14Speaker 2: it's just so simple. His truck's light.
- 33:18Speaker 1: There's just always this recurring theme of like the more
- 33:21Speaker 1: you do it, the less you kind of want to
- 33:23Speaker 1: tick with you. You know, it's not it's again, it's
- 33:25Speaker 1: not always.
- 33:25Speaker 2: The case, not always, but like Justin's.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Been doing this for a long time, very long time.
- 33:31Speaker 1: He came up in a podcast we did a couple
- 33:33Speaker 1: of weeks ago. He was like there for like expedition trophy.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Yeah, oh yeah, he tells us stories. It's just like,
- 33:39Speaker 2: holy god, I wish I knew about this then.
- 33:40Speaker 1: I was like, so teenager still, right, Not like I
- 33:46Speaker 1: was a teenager still when that stuff was going on,
- 33:48Speaker 1: which is crazy, But you have experienced guys like Justin
- 33:51Speaker 1: and that, like you know, they've kind of figured that
- 33:53Speaker 1: that works on they've got some cubbies to put some stuff. Yeah,
- 33:55Speaker 1: like because it doesn't your for the Grenadier has like
- 33:59Speaker 1: some storage and that where.
- 34:01Speaker 2: We're not not in the low version like he has
- 34:04Speaker 2: where it's just the complete sate. He doesn't. It doesn't
- 34:06Speaker 2: have that because there's all the electronics for the vehicle,
- 34:08Speaker 2: but in front, underneath the seats, like in the footwell area,
- 34:11Speaker 2: there's still quite a bit of storage in front of
- 34:13Speaker 2: where the batteries are. So there's that's where he keeps
- 34:16Speaker 2: most of the stuff, right, and it just works and
- 34:19Speaker 2: it's good. And our first system was design off adjustments.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Like that's how old school it is, right. He's like
- 34:26Speaker 2: I saw his truck and I was like, this is amazing,
- 34:28Speaker 2: and is JK Miner And I'm like, I didn't even
- 34:30Speaker 2: know what Urtha Miner was. I was like, oh my god,
- 34:32Speaker 2: this is like and that's basically the same thing. Roof conversion.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Well, in a lot of ways, the Wrangler JK or
- 34:38Speaker 1: just the four door Wrangler with the pop top on
- 34:42Speaker 1: it or Minor like that was the closest thing that
- 34:45Speaker 1: we could get to these troopy Defender builds that we
- 34:48Speaker 1: were talking about earlier in the podcast, and now we
- 34:51Speaker 1: have another option. But you know, there's also so many
- 34:54Speaker 1: vehicles on the market now, Like, I mean, what is
- 34:57Speaker 1: aside from the grenade here? Because sometimes this sounds like
- 34:59Speaker 1: a advertising credit here.
- 35:01Speaker 2: And yeah, I get in trouble sometimes.
- 35:04Speaker 1: We don't get any friggin money. Yeah, I've never taken
- 35:07Speaker 1: a cent from those guys. I paid for mine me too.
- 35:11Speaker 1: What Yeah, I wish, Yeah, like I wish like I've
- 35:14Speaker 1: oh here you're sponsored by them?
- 35:15Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I wish, Yeah that'd be.
- 35:19Speaker 1: But what's you know, you just also did some stuff
- 35:21Speaker 1: for the GX and that's a cool platform. I'd love
- 35:24Speaker 1: to talk about this, this new two fifty platform that's
- 35:28Speaker 1: you know, the new land Cruiser. You know, it's the
- 35:30Speaker 1: Prato that we never really got, well we got it
- 35:32Speaker 1: this the Lexis, but now we have this, this, this
- 35:35Speaker 1: heck and cool GX five fifty over trail plus. Like
- 35:40Speaker 1: who would have thought Alexus would be selling for oversticker.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it's crazy right like and it still yeah, and
- 35:47Speaker 2: it's a great and the demand is high, like when
- 35:49Speaker 2: we take it. We've had Christian Schmickler from CBI, We've
- 35:52Speaker 2: had his truck in our booth for the past three
- 35:54Speaker 2: expos because he was one of the very first people
- 35:55Speaker 2: to get one and he was nice enough to bring
- 35:57Speaker 2: it to us to let us build out an chure.
- 35:59Speaker 2: And his truck is rad right, it's crazy building. He
- 36:02Speaker 2: is a crazy wheeler. But the GX Y fifty versus
- 36:06Speaker 2: the land Cruiser, like to me, build wise, because it
- 36:09Speaker 2: doesn't have the hybrid battery, is way better for us
- 36:13Speaker 2: because there's just more real estate.
- 36:14Speaker 1: So they put a hybrid and battery in the.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Back and we have to build a frame up and
- 36:18Speaker 2: over it, which we have and it works great. And
- 36:20Speaker 2: like Brad from Trail Recon, you know, he has that
- 36:22Speaker 2: same system where it's just a low you know, he's
- 36:25Speaker 2: got some storage, some you know, drawers and stuff like that,
- 36:27Speaker 2: and the siege deletes and that's that system works out
- 36:30Speaker 2: really well. But the GX FI fifty, because it has
- 36:33Speaker 2: just a gas twin turbo engine, like you have more
- 36:36Speaker 2: real estate. And so if I'm buying one, I'm buying
- 36:40Speaker 2: the gx personally because it has in my pining, better
- 36:44Speaker 2: power and more room interior wise, we spend all of
- 36:48Speaker 2: our time inside. Yeah, that's my niche So.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Yeah, because this two fifty thing. You know, we've always
- 36:55Speaker 1: got some version of what this car actually is. Like
- 36:58Speaker 1: the four run was a proto one fifty that just
- 37:03Speaker 1: had some some stut you know, different body on it,
- 37:06Speaker 1: right for the American market. Now they've they've brought that
- 37:09Speaker 1: that land cruiser here. Yeah, it's interesting because it's it's
- 37:13Speaker 1: more usable than the Forerunner. Like it's almost to me
- 37:16Speaker 1: like the fore Runner kind of died. Like we have
- 37:19Speaker 1: a couple of the ranch, you know, we're here at
- 37:21Speaker 1: the the big thing that I drove around in one
- 37:23Speaker 1: and I'm like, man, I haven't heard anybody talk about
- 37:26Speaker 1: a fore Runner in a while, because it's like all
- 37:28Speaker 1: of the crowd that was the fore Runner crowd now is.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Like is running yeah a nineteen fifty eight lankers? Yeah, right,
- 37:34Speaker 2: because that's.
- 37:34Speaker 1: A it's frankly a more usable space.
- 37:37Speaker 2: It is more usable space. It's taller, it has a
- 37:39Speaker 2: little bit more with right. The extra height is huge
- 37:42Speaker 2: when you're when you're dealing with the interior, Like if
- 37:43Speaker 2: you're building out stuff, then you're gonna go take out
- 37:45Speaker 2: traps on trips and stuff like that. So the Foreigner's nice.
- 37:49Speaker 2: I think the styling they did a good job but
- 37:51Speaker 2: if you're in that budget range and you can afford
- 37:54Speaker 2: a nineteen fifty eight lan Cruise or I'm buying the
- 37:55Speaker 2: nineteen fifty eight Lankers, Yeah, because it's just it's also
- 37:59Speaker 2: a land cruiser. It's just a little bit better and nicer.
- 38:01Speaker 1: And yeah, so what are you seeing that most people
- 38:05Speaker 1: are doing to those for like interior.
- 38:09Speaker 2: Yeah, so land cruisers, I mean, we still do just
- 38:11Speaker 2: the same stuff for all We have a version of
- 38:14Speaker 2: the same thing for every vehicle pretty much. Right, every
- 38:17Speaker 2: vehicle is completely different on sizing specs. There's some commonalities,
- 38:21Speaker 2: but they're all completely different, so we have to design
- 38:24Speaker 2: everything to the vehicle. But we do a lot of
- 38:27Speaker 2: you know, side by side drawers are very popular, you know,
- 38:29Speaker 2: that's the old And when I first started, like that's
- 38:32Speaker 2: what I looked at. I was on Expedition Portal and
- 38:35Speaker 2: I'm just scrolling and looking what everybody's building, and this
- 38:38Speaker 2: I just found out about the industry. I had know
- 38:39Speaker 2: anything about it. I found XO Overland their first season,
- 38:42Speaker 2: Andrew Saint pier White and I was like, wow, you.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Guys, how did you actually even get into this?
- 38:46Speaker 2: That's you know, what we're going without. Afterwards, Yeah, that's
- 38:50Speaker 2: a story itself. Yeah, that's a story in itself. But
- 38:53Speaker 2: just sheer panic of realizing my daughter's ten and we
- 38:56Speaker 2: had our cabinet business in like the previous four years,
- 39:00Speaker 2: was working like seventy hours a week, and I realized
- 39:03Speaker 2: she went from six years old to ten years old,
- 39:05Speaker 2: and it was so fast, and I was working so
- 39:09Speaker 2: much that like I would leave before she was awake,
- 39:11Speaker 2: and I'd come home and it'd be like almost bedtime,
- 39:14Speaker 2: and that just like killed me. When she had ten,
- 39:15Speaker 2: I was like, you know what, this is stupid. I'm
- 39:18Speaker 2: not going to do this anymore. I don't care if
- 39:19Speaker 2: the business fails. I'm not going to do this anymore. Yeah,
- 39:22Speaker 2: And so literally just did some YouTube search, like I
- 39:25Speaker 2: want to do something with my daughter Wance, spend time
- 39:27Speaker 2: with her because she's you know.
- 39:28Speaker 1: She's Goose.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, she's Her nickname is Goose.
- 39:31Speaker 1: That's why it's called Yeah.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Yeah. Her emails Goose goose gyashere.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Yeah that's pretty right.
- 39:38Speaker 2: And I gave her the off show. I was like,
- 39:39Speaker 2: do you want to be your name?
- 39:40Speaker 3: Mean?
- 39:41Speaker 2: She's like, well, I'm Goose, So like I'll be Goose
- 39:43Speaker 2: at Goose dash gear to come and I was like,
- 39:44Speaker 2: all right, she's gonna get a ton of emails now.
- 39:46Speaker 2: It was probably a bad idea, so yeah, bad idea,
- 39:49Speaker 2: but yeah, And it was just it was just your panic, right,
- 39:52Speaker 2: realizing that in three years she's gonna be thirteen. Yeah right,
- 39:55Speaker 2: she's gonna be on her phone getting ready for high
- 39:57Speaker 2: school and be like, hey, I'm going to go out
- 39:59Speaker 2: with my friends. And I was like, she's like my world.
- 40:01Speaker 2: And so that's where. And I had done a bunch
- 40:04Speaker 2: of four whelion when I was in high school myself.
- 40:06Speaker 2: I had a Toyota pickup nineteen eighty four Toyota standard
- 40:09Speaker 2: cab shortbed pickup that I got, yeah when I was sixteen. Yeah,
- 40:12Speaker 2: and beat the living poop.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Out of that thing.
- 40:14Speaker 2: Holy cow. And I and the finding is my dad's
- 40:17Speaker 2: a mechanic, and he was building engines when I was
- 40:18Speaker 2: really young, Like I remember like Chevy three fifty, you know,
- 40:21Speaker 2: long blocks, and he's like literally blueprint balancing these things.
- 40:25Speaker 2: And he taught me nothing about cars. So I drove it.
- 40:28Speaker 2: I drove that truck for sixty thousand miles without changing
- 40:31Speaker 2: the oil because I didn't know you had to oh no,
- 40:33Speaker 2: oh man, oh no. Sixty thousand miles. Visit the dude,
- 40:38Speaker 2: it ran and never died. It was it's a twenty
- 40:40Speaker 2: two URC, you know, naturally aspirated. And my friend's like
- 40:43Speaker 2: driving with me, He's like, heyd, when's last time we
- 40:45Speaker 2: changed the oil. I was like, what are you talking about?
- 40:47Speaker 2: He's like, you need to change the oil. I was like,
- 40:48Speaker 2: I don't know what you're talking about. He's like, oh, dude,
- 40:51Speaker 2: we need change oils. We went and bought all the
- 40:52Speaker 2: stuff and he did it and like little metal shaving's
- 40:54Speaker 2: a few little metal shit. He's like, this is not good, dude.
- 40:56Speaker 2: You need to change your oil way more often than
- 40:58Speaker 2: sixty thousand miles. But yeah, couldn't kill it.
- 41:02Speaker 1: So does that mean you've like you've taught your daughter
- 41:05Speaker 1: nothing about cabinets or interior.
- 41:08Speaker 2: Some Yeah you'll figure it out now. No, she's she's
- 41:13Speaker 2: hardcore in the business now. Yeah. So I mean it's
- 41:16Speaker 2: rat too. Like the greatest thing. One of the best
- 41:19Speaker 2: dad moments was about two years ago and we were
- 41:23Speaker 2: building her super So she built a super outpack and
- 41:26Speaker 2: we talked to a Prince you and said, hey, you
- 41:28Speaker 2: guys were building a super outpack. You want to send
- 41:30Speaker 2: a refract, and they sent us a refract for her
- 41:31Speaker 2: because it's gonna be all shows and you know, you know,
- 41:33Speaker 2: the normal stuff. And she goes, well, I said, you
- 41:36Speaker 2: want to put your refract on this Saturday because I
- 41:38Speaker 2: got to be the shop working on, you know, another vehicle.
- 41:40Speaker 2: And she's like okay. So we get in the shop.
- 41:42Speaker 2: She's like, well, what do I do? My god, I
- 41:43Speaker 2: don't know. It's your problem. I was like, you go
- 41:45Speaker 2: figure it out.
- 41:46Speaker 1: She's like what.
- 41:47Speaker 2: I was like, yeah, just go watch the video, go
- 41:48Speaker 2: watch to read the instruction. She's like all right. So
- 41:50Speaker 2: she goes in. She's a little huffy, puffy, like I'm
- 41:52Speaker 2: not going to help her. I was like, you'll figure
- 41:53Speaker 2: it out. You're a smart kid. And so I go out.
- 41:56Speaker 2: I'm working out my truck. I come back in. She goes, Man,
- 41:59Speaker 2: these instructions they're good, but they're not great. So I
- 42:01Speaker 2: found this other guy who this YouTube video and it's
- 42:03Speaker 2: freaking epic and it told you everything you needed to see.
- 42:05Speaker 2: And I was like, oh good. So she's in there
- 42:07Speaker 2: and I coming around the corner and she's got the
- 42:10Speaker 2: seats folded down, she's on her back, laying in the
- 42:13Speaker 2: vehicle and She has her feet up in the in
- 42:15Speaker 2: like the sea pillars, and then grabs the headliner and
- 42:18Speaker 2: goes oom and just yanks it off the ceiling. And
- 42:21Speaker 2: I was like, hell, yeah, that's my daughter, this is
- 42:24Speaker 2: rad And I was so freaking happy and so proud
- 42:28Speaker 2: that she just said I'm just gonna freaking do it. Yeah,
- 42:30Speaker 2: And I mean I helped her obviously and still help her,
- 42:32Speaker 2: but you also have to kind of learn, right. You
- 42:35Speaker 2: can't just give them all of the information. You have
- 42:38Speaker 2: to let them learn and force them to figure it
- 42:40Speaker 2: out sometimes. I think, so.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Sometimes you have to let your children wait sixty thousand
- 42:45Speaker 1: miles before an Yeah that's not a change the oil.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Don't do that.
- 42:52Speaker 1: That was just Brian at three thousand and one miles.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Huh yeah, yeah, exactly, exactly. Yeah, oh yeah, super awesome.
- 43:01Speaker 2: But now she tires all the cars apart. So we
- 43:04Speaker 2: get like the new Forerunners coming in I think in
- 43:06Speaker 2: like two weeks, and we'll bring it in. We'll pull
- 43:09Speaker 2: in the truck in the shop and she will go
- 43:11Speaker 2: through and rip the whole interior that truck by herself.
- 43:14Speaker 2: She'll document every single bolt, what size ranch you need,
- 43:17Speaker 2: and write the instructions on how to rip it all apart,
- 43:19Speaker 2: and then I'll come out and take a look at it,
- 43:21Speaker 2: and then we'll discuss what our plan is, and then
- 43:23Speaker 2: we'll draw stuff, and then she'll actually do all the
- 43:25Speaker 2: test fitting, and then I'll make all the notes, we'll
- 43:27Speaker 2: make some adjustments, and then she'll do the final test
- 43:29Speaker 2: fitting and she'll write the instructions and document all that stuff.
- 43:32Speaker 1: And so that's crazy.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Yeah, she does all that. Now, that's awesome, super rad
- 43:35Speaker 2: for me because it saves me so much time. Yeah,
- 43:40Speaker 2: but it's good experience for her, right, Yeah, she's she's
- 43:43Speaker 2: stepped it up. It's pretty rad because now she handles
- 43:45Speaker 2: all like the any sponsorship media type stuff. She doesn't
- 43:49Speaker 2: handles all that now too, which is pretty rad. Yeah. Yeah,
- 43:52Speaker 2: well that's cool. So back on vehicles, sorry, back on segue.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Well, we gotta you gotta you gotta get her trained
- 43:58Speaker 1: up and you're grinned to your finish. Yes, so you can.
- 44:01Speaker 2: Then go one hundred percent, you can go.
- 44:03Speaker 1: Heck off, yeah, go to I don't know what you're
- 44:05Speaker 1: gonna do. What are you gonna do?
- 44:07Speaker 2: I want to travel, you know, the whole the hope
- 44:10Speaker 2: is that we're traveling, right, that we're going out. I
- 44:12Speaker 2: want to go to abatrolred just but I want to
- 44:15Speaker 2: take my car. I would love to have a booth
- 44:17Speaker 2: there and literally drive to the show and then go
- 44:19Speaker 2: also do some travel.
- 44:20Speaker 1: How cool would that be?
- 44:22Speaker 2: It'd be super That'd be amazing. Right. We've got some
- 44:24Speaker 2: dealers in Mongolia that have hit us up about becoming
- 44:27Speaker 2: a dealer. Love to set them up and then go
- 44:29Speaker 2: to their country and let them show me their favorite places.
- 44:33Speaker 1: I mean, you don't even have to ship. You can
- 44:34Speaker 1: just drive from the coppentur and all a rod to Mongolia.
- 44:39Speaker 1: It's like you can do like a like a couple
- 44:41Speaker 1: of days.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Yeah. I would do that in Harvey. That'd be superman.
- 44:44Speaker 1: That'd be really rad. Yeah, I mean, jeez, I want
- 44:51Speaker 1: to go to Mongolia.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Like I just had a friend that drove his his
- 44:55Speaker 1: Grenadier through that whole area and man, I think, like
- 45:00Speaker 1: just the whole like Eastern Europe stands Silk Road thing
- 45:05Speaker 1: is just like such a cool trip.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be amazing.
- 45:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:10Speaker 2: And then to have a dealer network that's selling our product,
- 45:13Speaker 2: they can let it go from each dealer and then
- 45:15Speaker 2: they take you to their favorite cool spots that you're
- 45:17Speaker 2: not going to normally find.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Yeah, so here's the idea. They start off at the show.
- 45:21Speaker 1: They don't know what they're doing, so they buy just
- 45:23Speaker 1: like one piece, and then all along the silk road
- 45:26Speaker 1: you've set up you've set up shops. Yeah, and perfect,
- 45:29Speaker 1: add little pieces along the way.
- 45:32Speaker 2: And then I can help pay for the trip. Yeah,
- 45:34Speaker 2: it's perfect.
- 45:35Speaker 1: Perfect.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:36Speaker 1: Geez, what are some like I I really want to
- 45:41Speaker 1: like dive into kind of this DIY thing again. I
- 45:44Speaker 1: think it's cool. Yeah, but for the guys that are doing,
- 45:48Speaker 1: like the guys girls are doing, like the pickup stuff
- 45:50Speaker 1: or like the van stuff. Like, let's actually talk about vans.
- 45:54Speaker 1: I know that you're not doing vans, but there's so
- 45:56Speaker 1: many people that do with like DIY conversions in the vans.
- 45:59Speaker 1: You've seen them. What are the things that people need
- 46:01Speaker 1: to look at differently, like what are they really doing wrong?
- 46:06Speaker 2: So probably the something you see a lot of is
- 46:09Speaker 2: people put you know, the hard the kind of hardware
- 46:11Speaker 2: you use is important, right, the strength of the hardware.
- 46:16Speaker 2: You know, in the early days, we saw a lot
- 46:17Speaker 2: of van builders DIY people using the pushbuche and push
- 46:21Speaker 2: button latches because they look really cool. They're really clean,
- 46:24Speaker 2: really small. Yeah, but they they they implode, they grenade.
- 46:28Speaker 1: I have, Oh they're terrible. I have the fle ones
- 46:32Speaker 1: and I had the very fistic ones initially, and they
- 46:35Speaker 1: make a metal version. But it's actually worse to use.
- 46:37Speaker 2: It's worse to use and it still is going to fail.
- 46:39Speaker 2: It just delays the fail. Yeah, it's not made for that, right,
- 46:42Speaker 2: And so probably a big thing to think about is
- 46:45Speaker 2: when you're building any vehicle, is the side to side
- 46:47Speaker 2: rocking motion is where all the damage happens. It's not
- 46:51Speaker 2: the front to back, it's the side to side. Because
- 46:54Speaker 2: you're on a trail, you're hitting a rock, the vehicle's
- 46:56Speaker 2: rocking side to side, and you know what it is.
- 46:58Speaker 2: I mean you've had times, I'm sure where at some
- 47:00Speaker 2: point you're doing something and the b pillar comes and
- 47:02Speaker 2: smacks you in the side the head. Yeah, right, it's
- 47:04Speaker 2: not fun, doesn't feel good. But that motion is very
- 47:08Speaker 2: violent on vehicles. So doing a ton of drawers that
- 47:11Speaker 2: go side to side east west on a vehicle is
- 47:14Speaker 2: not really always the best idea.
- 47:16Speaker 1: It's one of the worst parts of the design of
- 47:19Speaker 1: the older earth roamers is you had your pantry, which
- 47:23Speaker 1: is quite tall, quite heavy, and then you had all
- 47:26Speaker 1: your kitchen drawers that were all east west. Yeah, and
- 47:31Speaker 1: I constantly break those latches.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it's everything inside of it slamming back and forth.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Even if it's not heavy, it doesn't take a lot
- 47:37Speaker 2: of weight. It's just that repetitive slamming where's everything out
- 47:40Speaker 2: and breaks it. And we learned this the very hard way.
- 47:43Speaker 2: The first system we ever built, like the first true
- 47:46Speaker 2: interior we ever built for Dave Bennett, you know, with
- 47:48Speaker 2: American Ventures, and we built his truck and we put
- 47:51Speaker 2: two drawer sideways at the front of the truck, right
- 47:54Speaker 2: behind the bulkhead, and we completely grenaded the the latches
- 47:58Speaker 2: and completely granated even the ball bearings on the drawer.
- 48:01Speaker 2: Guy's just Discinega's ball bearings all over his floor. Yeah,
- 48:05Speaker 2: and the drawers laying on the floor.
- 48:06Speaker 1: But but it's natural to want to do that because
- 48:08Speaker 1: that's just really speaking, that's where your length is. The
- 48:13Speaker 1: front to back is your length, and then you're with
- 48:15Speaker 1: is just not as much. So you're like, okay, it's well,
- 48:18Speaker 1: it's that it's that troopy style build out that we
- 48:21Speaker 1: were talking about. Yeah, you've got you've got the cabinets,
- 48:23Speaker 1: on the one side. Of course, they're going to pull out. Yeah,
- 48:26Speaker 1: you know, you know, pull out to the.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Inside, the pull towards the inside, because that's where you're standing.
- 48:30Speaker 2: It's like your kitchen. Yeah, right, so you want to
- 48:32Speaker 2: have that functionality going in and out because that's where
- 48:35Speaker 2: you're standing. But I usually recommend just as few as possible.
- 48:39Speaker 2: I'm a big fan of drawers. Yeah, but on that
- 48:42Speaker 2: kind of build as few as possible. Right, put it
- 48:45Speaker 2: on a shelf, put a bag in there. And if
- 48:48Speaker 2: you are going to do it, like figure out some
- 48:49Speaker 2: way to keep stuff from rolling around and bouncing around. Right.
- 48:52Speaker 2: That's another real easy fix is don't put stuff in
- 48:56Speaker 2: that has a lot of chance to move front to
- 48:58Speaker 2: back or left right, because if you control that, you're
- 49:01Speaker 2: you're elimiting. It's like a dead blow hammer, just over
- 49:04Speaker 2: and over and over again, just beating everything to death.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Yeah. And you guys have those kind of like drawer
- 49:12Speaker 1: inserts that you can kind of adjust.
- 49:14Speaker 2: Yeah, the remxx Yeah, those are pretty cool.
- 49:17Speaker 1: That's something that I think I might add because I
- 49:19Speaker 1: noticed my drawers are usually like empty, but I'll throw
- 49:22Speaker 1: like a lantern or like I actually like keep my
- 49:24Speaker 1: mountain bike stuff in there. Yeah, like Laura and I
- 49:27Speaker 1: basically during when the Granador is not doing something, that's
- 49:30Speaker 1: our mountain bike truck. Ye, and there's always a water
- 49:32Speaker 1: bottle or something rocking back and forth. Like it's that
- 49:36Speaker 1: I never never really thought about it. I mean I have,
- 49:38Speaker 1: but that's side to side motion. That's just so repetitive
- 49:41Speaker 1: and it kind of gets good.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and that's where all the damage comes. So yeah,
- 49:45Speaker 2: this stuff remix and we sell that Paul made equip
- 49:48Speaker 2: sells at each other people. But yeah, it's that stuff
- 49:51Speaker 2: works great. It also works great because you can cut
- 49:54Speaker 2: its length, you can create your own dividers, and this
- 49:56Speaker 2: is great for DIY people. Right. It doesn't have to
- 49:58Speaker 2: go on our drawers, It goes any drawers. Yeah, and
- 50:00Speaker 2: you can get it from any from Paul, from us,
- 50:02Speaker 2: from all kinds of different people. But it just also
- 50:05Speaker 2: creates a layer layer of insulation from noise because it's
- 50:10Speaker 2: foam lined, and so it absorbs whatever's in your drawer
- 50:13Speaker 2: that's rattling. You don't even hear it outside the drawer. Yeah,
- 50:17Speaker 2: because it's absorbing.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Your stuff's not too bad with like that Baltic birch ply.
- 50:21Speaker 2: Yeah. The Birch helps.
- 50:22Speaker 1: I've been in some vehicles that have like aluminum drawers
- 50:27Speaker 1: and one just generally not a fan aluminum. When things
- 50:33Speaker 1: are braided against it, it's the moment you get through
- 50:35Speaker 1: that coating, everything just turns black and filled with dust. Like, yeah,
- 50:40Speaker 1: I had some aluminum cases when we did the Dempster
- 50:42Speaker 1: Highway and that's you know, the total trip was ten
- 50:47Speaker 1: fifteen thousand miles or something, and it's everything inside of
- 50:50Speaker 1: the aluminum was like black wrecked.
- 50:53Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's the powder that the aluminum turns to
- 50:56Speaker 2: powder and then it just gets on everything.
- 50:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, jeez. It's it's these simple, these
- 51:01Speaker 1: simple principles that that side to side thing. If there's
- 51:04Speaker 1: one more thing that you'd kind of like you see
- 51:06Speaker 1: people do, whether that's in fans and pickups in SUVs,
- 51:11Speaker 1: like what is that other thing that is like the
- 51:13Speaker 1: glaring like simple observation that you have.
- 51:18Speaker 2: Yeah, So I mean on all of those, one thing
- 51:20Speaker 2: that we see a lot of and we get a
- 51:21Speaker 2: lot of request for, is people are like, oh, hey,
- 51:23Speaker 2: you know, do you make a drawer that goes all
- 51:25Speaker 2: the way front to back. Well, that's a big drawer.
- 51:29Speaker 2: It requires a big set of drawer guides, and that
- 51:32Speaker 2: really requires a different type of construction if you want
- 51:35Speaker 2: it to last. We even build our drawers differently. When
- 51:37Speaker 2: we get into the bigger drawers, we don't build them
- 51:40Speaker 2: like the other ones. So the probably the one thing
- 51:42Speaker 2: is everyone wants to have these big, massive drawers that
- 51:45Speaker 2: pull all the way out of the back of their
- 51:46Speaker 2: pickup bed where they will have a big draw it
- 51:48Speaker 2: pulls all the way from the well.
- 51:50Speaker 1: Sometimes you'll see the guys that do like the like
- 51:52Speaker 1: guys or girls that do the beds that bedslide or whatever. Yeah,
- 51:56Speaker 1: the thing is your whole thing comes out and then
- 51:59Speaker 1: they'll put on top of that. And then I've even
- 52:01Speaker 1: seen a fridge slide on top of that, and I'm like,
- 52:05Speaker 1: my dude, you have like twenty feet of extension of
- 52:09Speaker 1: extension like like like okay, kind of cool, but like
- 52:12Speaker 1: I'm thinking that this is lifting the front tires off figurehut.
- 52:16Speaker 2: Yeah there is something to that. Yeah.
- 52:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:18Speaker 2: So like if you don't need a big drawer that big, right,
- 52:21Speaker 2: it comes down to what are you doing. I mean,
- 52:23Speaker 2: if you're like constantly were doing trail work and you're
- 52:26Speaker 2: restoring trails and you might need that drawer. If you're
- 52:28Speaker 2: a contractor, yeah, you might have a bunch of tools,
- 52:30Speaker 2: but if you're just going camping, like you can do
- 52:32Speaker 2: a half drawer and then just have storage space in
- 52:35Speaker 2: front of it that you can put bags in, or
- 52:37Speaker 2: gear or your recoveryear or your tools. Stuff that you
- 52:39Speaker 2: shouldn't be looking at every single day anyway, hopefully, but
- 52:42Speaker 2: you're gonna need your kitchen, yeah, right, so put all
- 52:45Speaker 2: that stuff in the back and maybe just do a
- 52:47Speaker 2: half a drawer and then just make storage in front
- 52:49Speaker 2: of it. You can still use the same box.
- 52:50Speaker 1: Yeah, there's always something like you can kind of like
- 52:52Speaker 1: hide in little spaces like my I'm like on my system,
- 52:55Speaker 1: like I put that I have the drawer fridge and
- 52:58Speaker 1: there's what maybe like ten inches of space behind it,
- 53:02Speaker 1: eight inches of space behind it. Yeah, I was able
- 53:05Speaker 1: to put a little lithium battery back there and take
- 53:07Speaker 1: use of that space.
- 53:08Speaker 2: You put a little lithium battery back there, not four
- 53:12Speaker 2: hundred amp hours of battery, yeah, which is a whole
- 53:15Speaker 2: different conversation. But like people are overbuilding to the end degree,
- 53:19Speaker 2: like they're just going crazy.
- 53:21Speaker 1: Particularly with electrical systems, Like it's it's become in Vogue,
- 53:26Speaker 1: Like I was talking to me last night. That's doing
- 53:27Speaker 1: a red arc manager thirty in their Lexus GX and
- 53:33Speaker 1: I'm like, that's meant for a trailer, dude, or like
- 53:36Speaker 1: a slide in camper, Like, where are you putting all
- 53:40Speaker 1: of this? Yeah, it's you know stuff you don't You
- 53:42Speaker 1: don't need four hundred amp hours. I mean that would
- 53:45Speaker 1: run a fridge like a like a demetic fridge is
- 53:48Speaker 1: like what one or two amps per hour on average?
- 53:52Speaker 2: A couple of amps maybe per hour? Yeah, yeah, amp hours, Yeah,
- 53:55Speaker 2: a couple hours.
- 53:56Speaker 1: Like do you need it to run, you know, until
- 53:59Speaker 1: the next election.
- 54:01Speaker 2: Right, it's a valid question, right, I mean if you're
- 54:04Speaker 2: holding out for that long, then yeah, maybe you need
- 54:06Speaker 2: to Yeah. Yeah, it's you know, less is and more
- 54:10Speaker 2: with everything, right, So just do a half drawer in
- 54:13Speaker 2: the back, do just the power system you need. And
- 54:16Speaker 2: another thing that we see this is a good one. Actually,
- 54:18Speaker 2: now that comes to mind is we get this comment
- 54:20Speaker 2: a lot. Well, why don't you, you know, make everything
- 54:23Speaker 2: wall to wall and box everything in. It's like you
- 54:26Speaker 2: can do that, but my recovery bag fits perfectly to
- 54:30Speaker 2: the left of my kitchen in that little space where you.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Have to also have to have the jacket, the little
- 54:34Speaker 1: the little you find a little a little jacket in there.
- 54:38Speaker 2: And that stuff. Like everyone wants to get this thing
- 54:41Speaker 2: to where in a lot of a lot of DIY.
- 54:43Speaker 2: They do it because they're building it right. But there's
- 54:45Speaker 2: something fun to that, right, making it all custom.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Tailored and very specific. But if you.
- 54:49Speaker 2: Don't have a way to access that space quickly and easily,
- 54:52Speaker 2: it's really dead space, right, So leaving the space around
- 54:56Speaker 2: there or even you know on a drawer system, any
- 54:59Speaker 2: of our drawer systems, there's there's a natural in the
- 55:01Speaker 2: second back the back seat, you know, the second row.
- 55:04Speaker 2: It has a lean to it and then the drawers
- 55:06Speaker 2: are vertical, so it creates a triangle back there. So
- 55:09Speaker 2: like in my other truck, I kept all my tools.
- 55:11Speaker 1: There with the Grenadier Factory toolkit fits perfectly in that
- 55:14Speaker 1: little space.
- 55:15Speaker 2: For ye and it's perfect and it's secure and you
- 55:17Speaker 2: don't have to worry about in an accident or something like that.
- 55:19Speaker 2: Hopefully God willing nothing that happens. But like let's see
- 55:21Speaker 2: you roll over or you get an accident. Those tools
- 55:24Speaker 2: which are heavy and metal, aren't flying around the vehicle
- 55:27Speaker 2: because they're in a triangle, like a locked in triangle,
- 55:30Speaker 2: which keeps them secure. Like, that's not space you need
- 55:33Speaker 2: to I don't think you need to make a drawer
- 55:34Speaker 2: that follows that angle and has a funky angle on
- 55:36Speaker 2: the drawer, because it's a great use of that space
- 55:39Speaker 2: in other ways.
- 55:40Speaker 1: Yeah, like it maybe it seems cool when you're just
- 55:43Speaker 1: kind of keeking out designing it, but do you really
- 55:45Speaker 1: need to work that hard on it.
- 55:47Speaker 2: No, you're just adding more weight, right, And I've seen
- 55:49Speaker 2: people do it where they put cubbies or the you know,
- 55:51Speaker 2: the custom building. And we did it for one of
- 55:52Speaker 2: the guys that worked for Uce one time. He's like,
- 55:54Speaker 2: I wanted to go all the way this way and
- 55:55Speaker 2: follow this angle and it's okay, we did it, and
- 55:57Speaker 2: it's like, okay, we just added a lot of money,
- 56:00Speaker 2: even at our cost, and a lot of time and
- 56:03Speaker 2: a lot of extra weight, whereas you could have just
- 56:05Speaker 2: thrown your bags in there and been done. Yeah, So
- 56:08Speaker 2: don't don't overthink it. Yeah right, there's a lot overthinking
- 56:12Speaker 2: those spaces that are there, all those lone nooks and
- 56:14Speaker 2: crannies you can make use of.
- 56:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:17Speaker 2: Yeah, there's been.
- 56:20Speaker 1: So many little little pearls of wisdom from mister Interior.
- 56:26Speaker 2: Try and try it.
- 56:27Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I can't wait to see what goes on
- 56:31Speaker 1: with your grenadier. You're you're hoping to unveil that later
- 56:35Speaker 1: this year.
- 56:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we'll definitely haven't done last year, you know,
- 56:39Speaker 2: hoping crossing the Fingers Expo Mountain West will have it
- 56:42Speaker 2: done and on display. That's even know when that event
- 56:44Speaker 2: is end of August.
- 56:46Speaker 1: There's like so many of them now.
- 56:47Speaker 2: There's only twenty two.
- 56:48Speaker 1: There's only twenty two.
- 56:50Speaker 2: Yeah, so every other week it's.
- 56:52Speaker 1: Crazy like for small like most of the businesses in
- 56:55Speaker 1: this industry are not that large, and it's like if
- 56:57Speaker 1: you went to every event, you'd have to have a
- 57:00Speaker 1: full time staff to do all of them. Like it's
- 57:03Speaker 1: a little crazy.
- 57:04Speaker 2: Yeah, the expos are a lot already. At five a year,
- 57:09Speaker 2: that's a lot. I think that's kind of like that's
- 57:11Speaker 2: our max. Like anything past this and.
- 57:13Speaker 1: That's a big thing is nice, is like it's starting
- 57:16Speaker 1: to be at these these bigger shows that you're just
- 57:18Speaker 1: getting like you know, I'm not seeing even like internal
- 57:21Speaker 1: marketing staff, Like how many of the boots did I
- 57:22Speaker 1: see at West.
- 57:23Speaker 2: That were just like hired hired temps? Hired temps yeah,
- 57:27Speaker 2: or hired sales marketing people. Yeah, yeah, it's there's a
- 57:30Speaker 2: lot more of that going on. Yeah, it's interesting. But
- 57:33Speaker 2: as consolidations happen, all that stuff starts getting a little
- 57:36Speaker 2: bit different.
