Transcript
- 0:00Right. Oh well, one name is Nick Donalan. I do the vocals
- 0:05for Suffer the Avenue and on my right here I've got Donal Glasco and he's
- 0:12the lead guitarist. He does all the heavy lifting here. Here are you
- 0:16going? Brother? Thanks for joining us and no thanks for having us,
- 0:24no worries that at all. So we're here. Should I need to talk
- 0:27about the fact that Suffer the Avenue are premier in your new single Sick Current
- 0:32by Heavy on September the first, So, firstly, tell us a bit
- 0:35about the song. Guys, it's pretty sick. There was a song that's
- 0:40so so. I recently entered this band on fourteen and fifteen months ago and
- 0:47they come to me with a few sort of skeletons of songs, and this
- 0:52was one of the ones that we worked on straight off the bat, and
- 0:56we just well sort of fell in love with each other a broke kind of
- 1:00way with this track. Yeah, it was good to like, as we
- 1:03were on the search for a new singer, have a couple of songs to
- 1:10just throw out to someone to say, here, listen to this, see
- 1:14what you come back with. But also when we wrote this song, it's
- 1:18sort of just fell together, like and then we brought in a new singer
- 1:22who just grabbed it and that fell together and it's just one of our favorite
- 1:27as a whole. She's a massive beast of the song guys that blends a
- 1:32variety of john And so where did you come up with that sound? It's
- 1:36it's like out there, but it's really effective. I guess the scener like
- 1:42the sound is just it's literally every influence we have in ourselves. And then
- 1:49we take that to the jam room and it's like it just comes together when
- 1:56you're in a room together, playing together. Like it's not really anything that
- 2:00we've set out to sound like we just someone starts here, someone starts there,
- 2:06says what do you think of this? Trif? What do you think
- 2:07of that? It's like we build on the spot and it's hard to sort
- 2:15of say where that is, like our sound comes from, because it does
- 2:22build more organically in the gym room, which speaking personally, I wouldn't have
- 2:28it any other way, Like it's yeah, a good way to do things
- 2:31and not of fine coming into this Like I'll sit here on sitting on them
- 2:36gemman away and everyone will throw some opinions out there and things just gell really
- 2:42well, and what will happen is, well, I'll take a recording home,
- 2:45I'll work on some lyrics, and then the next time we catch up,
- 2:46I'll throw those lyrics down and then it sort of just changes a little
- 2:52bit more and then before you know, we've all come together with a full
- 2:54song. And Yeah, they always come with that sort of a new Man
- 3:00all post grunge, post punk sort of style. Yeah, it definitely depends
- 3:06on what we're listening to at the time. Yeah, it's heavily influenced by
- 3:09like current what we're listening to, but we also yeah, drawing past inspirations
- 3:17as well, So it's hard to say exactly how these songs happen. It's
- 3:21just the magic of the Gamman yea. And the song also comes with the
- 3:25cree Fuck video guys, So tell us a bit about that. Well,
- 3:31I made me and Jay Pulaskis on the drums. He loves it. He
- 3:37just loves it. So he had no idea for a film clip and we
- 3:39sort of just went with went along with the flow really and he did a
- 3:44lot of the backwork. He does a lot of the back work, background
- 3:46stuff, and yeah, put some ideas to us leading up to it the
- 3:50week's getting in and then we knew what to bring on the day and we
- 3:54just had a big shriek, a big street day and just had some fun
- 3:59with it. And I think the idea was to have the dead dead Head
- 4:03ted to sort of stalk us all through the video and without saying too much,
- 4:09we've got some plans going forward for the next film clip or two as
- 4:13well, sort of like making a common theme. Now people listen to this
- 4:16can't actually see how the name of this song current spell but it's sick.
- 4:21Then the second word is cr and G. Now I was looking at that
- 4:26earlier and I thought he'd replaced the U with an R, but apparently it's
- 4:29not. It's current. Well, it's up for interpretation to the listener.
- 4:33Yeah, we just wanted to read whatever they want, and that's exactly right.
- 4:39They can callt whatever they want as long as they enjoy it very But
- 4:43so I'm going to choose the the former one, mate, because I'm a
- 4:46big fan of the word cut. But you could replace the U letter or
- 4:50symbol in the alphabet at all, Like what choose the letter are like if
- 4:55you flip it up so down it's the closest thing like a lower case are
- 5:00I'll give you that, I'll give you that one. The song is also
- 5:04the lead single from your upcoming four track EP Volume one, Super Dead,
- 5:10which is coming out of September fifteen. So is it a good sonic representation
- 5:14or what to expect? Yes, in a way, Yes, we have
- 5:18three songs and a cover on there. So the cover is probably the closest
- 5:23thing to what we could find that we sounded like that we would perform well
- 5:28live. The other two songs are in the same vein, but definitely a
- 5:33little bit different, like everything we've written I feel so far has always been
- 5:40a little bit different and nothing it's like, we'll know two songs are the
- 5:45same. Yeah, we try and steer away from sounding like we wrote every
- 5:49single song within two weeks, where it was all the same influence, all
- 5:54the same sound style, and just procedure for writing, because personally, I
- 6:00feel like when you write songs too quickly, you get a little bit formulaic
- 6:06and just sort of piece everything together the exact same way of the exact same
- 6:12time, whereas if you give it a little bit of time to breathe,
- 6:15they take different directions, which I think a lot of these songs do,
- 6:20and the first four songs on this EP probably cover the best best amount of
- 6:29diversity we've actually written. I feel yeah. Now because there's only four songs
- 6:34on there, we've got time to go through them individually. So we've got
- 6:38sick tarrant out of the way, you guys, So tell us a bit
- 6:40more about Saturday Friends. Well, Saturday Friends, that's actually my personal favorite.
- 6:45But I love that song. I might have been wrong before. I
- 6:47think that might have been the first one I had was too possibly, I
- 6:51don't know, I can't remember, but I just remember when I did Saturday
- 6:55Friends. I just had a hook in mind for that chorus, and somehow
- 6:59that worked. I couldn't believe it when I when I come with the hook
- 7:01and the lads were actually happy with it, I was like, oh shit,
- 7:03I've actually done something right here to start off. And yes, Saturday
- 7:08Friends is actually my favorite song also because the lyrics there were just heavily influenced
- 7:12with things that happened in my previous job experienced with a what I deem as
- 7:18a person has been a bit of a predator, and what the lyrics are
- 7:24heavily about. But we thought we'd cover it with a nice friendly name called
- 7:27Saturday Friends Friendship. Next time, You've got a cover of the Prime of
- 7:38five five song loose, So tell us about that and then why you chose
- 7:41to cover that song. So I had a Apple playlist that was I Really
- 7:48missed You, Madam, and I've never heard the song before, and it
- 7:51came up and it was just as Nick was sort of coming into the fold.
- 7:58I was like, this has like what we want to be and what
- 8:03we want to sound like written all over it. So we like just floated
- 8:07in the group chat and everyone's sort of stuck to it, and we tried
- 8:13in the jam room and it felt really good, and we've played it live
- 8:16and it felt really good, and we thought if like we'd like to have
- 8:22a cover, just to have something for people to like, hopefully something that
- 8:28they connect too, like we like to have a cover in the set,
- 8:33but this one just it jumps. It's an absolute great song, so we
- 8:39kept it. It's always performed well and we just feel like it's a good
- 8:45representation of the sound we wanted to go for playing that. Playing that song
- 8:48live, it's fucking bouncing that one. They close us out, which tell
- 8:56us a bit about that one. Well, say, Thang is heavily written
- 9:01influenced by Jay the Drummer, and that is the one track that that's all
- 9:07his lyrics. I'm pretty sure lys Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
- 9:13yeah. He gave me these lyrics and I had to look over him and
- 9:16had to make a few alterations with where they sat. But I just looked
- 9:20at it was like this is yeah, this is great and then yeah yeah,
- 9:26Dom DT, Damian the Bassis, they all just come up with some
- 9:31really big, big sounds for that track. It just really has a lot
- 9:35of soul a lazy word, but it just feels like that song has a
- 9:39lot of feeling yeah, feeling good word like. There's a lot of emotion
- 9:45you can feel in the riffs, like it's very distressed the whole way through.
- 9:50But it's a little bit nody, but we can like it's probably the
- 9:58closest who what we'd write if we were trying to sound like death Like.
- 10:05It's very like, yeah, distressed chord structures and all that sort of jazz.
- 10:16But it's one of my favorites. It's got some nice guitar parts I
- 10:20like to play. So believe that by virtue of the volume one. In
- 10:28the title, I'm assuming that there's going to be fair that releases to go
- 10:31with it. Nah, totally wrong. This is volume one volume all.
- 10:37We we do have stuff in the works too, maybe maybe you down the
- 10:43track, but sort of got other wheels turning in the background, which will
- 10:50progress with well promoting this one and sort of given these songs there spot in
- 11:01the daylight. Yeah, this is this is just the beginning. We do
- 11:05have a plan going forward, and we're very excited. First of all,
- 11:11we're excited to get this out there. I don't mean personally, I'm I'm
- 11:16a person I'm pretty never satisfied. So I know, once we release this
- 11:20pretty within the first two weeks, I'll be like, let's get this second
- 11:24go on, because we do have more more in the works, and as
- 11:28much as I'm pumped for this one, I'm already ready to go for the
- 11:31next round. So there will be more to come, we know, And
- 11:35like we're still maybe every couple of weeks in the gym and righting new stuff.
- 11:41So the look ahead is first and foremost for us. We just want
- 11:46to keep writing. We have such a good time doing it together, like
- 11:50it's it's a day out lock yourself in a room. Three good friends hash
- 11:58out of on and look. Sometimes they fall together, sometimes they don't,
- 12:03but it's just good bonding time altogether. Have you got any many live shows
- 12:09planned? Do I promote the EP? Yeah? We do. We have
- 12:11got two coming up forgive me here, but I think it's the third lengh
- 12:18of October in Gaula, the first one, and then we've got one on
- 12:22the ninth of December dawn Fest. There between that we've got locked in.
- 12:28Before I let you go, guys, I started a new thing, a
- 12:31new got three new Spotify playlists through Have you just based on songs from the
- 12:35artists that I speak to, so using your own songs, I want you
- 12:39to give me one for the playlist that's to get the party started, one
- 12:43for the playlist that could save your marriage, and one for the playlist that
- 12:48could potentially end your marriage. To get the party started, louse, I
- 12:52know what to cover, but Lewis, alright, Lewis is going to get
- 12:56the party started. We would see be the one that seek yes, okay,
- 13:01I'll just give to the end. Okay, sorry sorry. The one
- 13:05that would save your marriage would probably be se Fang just because it sounds pretty.
- 13:11And then the one that would definitely ruin it would be sick hone strictly
- 13:18for the spelling of current. Are you guys already in my arm, in
- 13:20my chop chine Just for spelling that like that, It's a fucking champion effort,
- 13:24beautiful. We'll try to do something more special in the next epair.
- 13:30Very good, guys, and I will thank very much for your time tonight.
- 13:31Sit Current comes out on September, the first premiered through Heavy so Wrap.
- 13:37Yours are actually the cracker of its on, guys, and look forward
- 13:39to hearing the rest of it. Your beady Chris, I appreciate it.
- 13:43Chris, you're good man.
