- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_05: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_05: And Tristan, uh, another disappointing weekend for the Ret Raiders.
- 0:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, welcome on, welcome all to the uh our the your free therapy session.
- 0:58SPEAKER_04: Let it all out with us.
- 0:59SPEAKER_04: It's uh we're gonna get through it together.
- 1:01SPEAKER_04: Maybe not, actually, but we're gonna we're gonna do our best to get through this session.
- 1:06SPEAKER_05: Let's sure hope so.
- 1:07SPEAKER_05: Uh oh man.
- 1:10SPEAKER_05: We're gonna straight up apologize.
- 1:12SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna apologize on behalf of myself for potentially dropping uh you know a couple explicits here.
- 1:19SPEAKER_05: Uh, we're gonna see how this rolls, but uh, we're very frustrated with uh the way Texas Tech football, uh, the product that they have been putting out on the field uh against Texas and now repeating that against TCU this past weekend.
- 1:33SPEAKER_05: Uh TCU wins 52 to 31.
- 1:36SPEAKER_05: Uh, we were never really in the game.
- 1:38SPEAKER_05: Uh it was just a big yikes all around.
- 1:40SPEAKER_05: Um, TCU TCU ran for 396 total yards.
- 1:44SPEAKER_05: Uh it was it was a nightmare.
- 1:46SPEAKER_05: It was it was disturbing and it was horrible to watch.
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was it was abysmal.
- 1:51SPEAKER_04: I was at the game, and whenever TCU first scored, it felt like we were already out of it because they just took off on these just a few running plays that made us look silly.
- 2:01SPEAKER_04: Like our defense was nowhere to be seen.
- 2:03SPEAKER_04: And I'm just scratching my head, like, what the heck, Patterson?
- 2:07SPEAKER_04: Uh Coach Patterson, what what is this?
- 2:09SPEAKER_04: We've been praising him over and over and over again on this podcast.
- 2:13SPEAKER_04: Now we look like fools.
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: We don't need much help with that, but now we really look like clowns.
- 2:18SPEAKER_04: Um, because that defense was some of the worst I've seen in a long time.
- 2:22SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'll say I say that I okay, two weeks, sorry.
- 2:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: Some of the worst defense I've seen since the Texas game, but it it just kind of seems like a whole we went back to vintage Texas Tech, where everyone's gonna just be joking about our defense, and rightfully so.
- 2:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I was talking to a couple co-workers today, and they of course give me shit because I'm the only Texas Tech fan in the entire city of Baton Rouge.
- 2:46SPEAKER_05: And he's just like, What happened, man?
- 2:47SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, Oh, well, you know, uh, we have the same terrible defense, but with a less exciting and fun offense.
- 2:54SPEAKER_05: So, you know, things are going well over here.
- 2:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, it's an issue whenever you're bringing up Cliff Kingsbury, or like, uh, yeah, we were talking about it at the game, is you know, yeah, we lost a lot under Cliff, and we hate to bring up these uh comparisons, but at least the offense lit up the scoreboard with the opponent.
- 3:11SPEAKER_04: It was rare, we were just utterly blown out with Cliff.
- 3:15SPEAKER_04: But I don't really want to go there because you know, we have there's there's some pros and cons of both coaching administrations, but neither one of them can we just sit here and say, Man, I'm so happy, I'm so pleased with the way things are going.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: So it's it's it's not even worth going there.
- 3:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, we can get into that a little later when we're talking about you know, reactions and and everything like that.
- 3:37SPEAKER_05: And we had a ton of interactions with tech Twitter after the loss, and uh, you know, good and bad, and uh people being upset.
- 3:45SPEAKER_05: And you know, we we do appreciate all y'all interacting and and you know, voicing your opinion because your opinion is just as valid as me and Tristan's opinion, you know.
- 3:53SPEAKER_05: You can think whatever you want about the program, we may disagree, but you know, the the good thing is we're all talking about it and we're all emotionally invested, and you know, it just it's a sign of a of a good invested fan base.
- 4:07SPEAKER_05: And yeah, we have some overreactors and some ridiculous beliefs within this fan base, but it is nice that we have people that actually care and actually really want this football program to succeed.
- 4:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, apathy is the worst thing that can happen to a program.
- 4:22SPEAKER_04: Uh, and it's good to see that that hasn't really set in yet.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: I don't really blame you if you are losing interest in this season.
- 4:29SPEAKER_04: It's hard to justify being fully invested because you're just gonna get hurt.
- 4:34SPEAKER_04: But it's uh, but it you're you're completely right, man.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: Like everyone in the stadium was so upset and you know, voicing their frustrations.
- 4:43SPEAKER_04: And man, probably the the biggest sign that people were upset in the stadium was was with how quiet it was.
- 4:49SPEAKER_04: There was nothing to cheer for, it was just nothing but frustration and and murmuring amongst each other about the how pathetic this is.
- 4:57SPEAKER_04: Um, but you're you're right, man.
- 4:59SPEAKER_04: I'm glad people are pissed off and voicing their opinions.
- 5:02SPEAKER_04: And it's actually interesting to see different points of view because sometimes you're like, you know, I haven't thought about that, or that's a good point to see amongst our fans.
- 5:09SPEAKER_05: I think that's the thing that makes me the most upset with tech Twitter, is that some people are just not open to a different different opinion, you know.
- 5:18SPEAKER_05: And that's I mean, that's with everything, that's with politics, that's with sport, anything sports related.
- 5:23SPEAKER_05: So people just get something in their head and they just roll with that, and they're not gonna hear any other side to it.
- 5:28SPEAKER_05: And you know, uh, for those type of people, I I wouldn't agree with, but you know, if you're willing to hear out stuff and you're willing to think stuff through and not just base your entire opinion on emotions, I think uh, you know, that's a better way to approach it.
- 5:44SPEAKER_05: But you know, that's just my opinion.
- 5:46SPEAKER_05: But uh, I mean, everybody will agree that this game was disappointing, this game was a nightmare.
- 5:51SPEAKER_05: We had 60 recruits at this game, and that's it.
- 5:56SPEAKER_05: You know, I'm I'm so sick and tired of the whole night game in the Jones now, because we haven't proved that we can put together a good night game in the Jones in in years, so all that needs to stop because that's not an advantage for us anymore.
- 6:12SPEAKER_05: Not until we get that back will I ever be happy about a night game in the Jones, because uh, this has been the worst part of Cliff and Matt Wells is that we could not get that significant win at home against a pretty decent opponent.
- 6:28SPEAKER_05: We always lost at home, and that's how you lose the fan base is you don't win when everybody pays money, goes out, makes a day out of it, and then you put up that crap.
- 6:38SPEAKER_05: I mean, I understand why people are angry for sure.
- 6:43SPEAKER_04: That's that that's a good point to bring up.
- 6:44SPEAKER_04: I was thinking about that earlier as well is the sheer amount of recruits that were at this game, and it was a good idea to bring them, but it turned out to be a bad idea, you know, and then in four and uh in uh hindsight, because it's not a good look when you're getting bull, when the game's over by halftime.
- 7:03SPEAKER_04: Um, and obviously the fans are gonna file out because where's the hope in any win from here, anything to watch from here?
- 7:10SPEAKER_04: So that these these these recruits not only get to see you get smeared across the floor by an unranked okay opponent.
- 7:18SPEAKER_04: This isn't exactly the Big 12 winner here, an in-state rival, and then you see all these fans funneling out.
- 7:24SPEAKER_04: And I'm not on the side of the fan base that thinks that those are bad fans.
- 7:28SPEAKER_04: I I it's it's understandable.
- 7:30SPEAKER_04: This we've been going through this for a decade where there has been no hope at home, and I'm a very optimistic guy, but whatever we're losing at home, we're not gonna come back.
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: It just it never happens, so and until proven otherwise, this is what you can expect to happen.
- 7:46SPEAKER_04: So it was it's a it's pathetic.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: I hope the recruits had a good time otherwise with the behind the scenes and and listening to coaches' sales pitches, which should be a little more important anyway.
- 7:56SPEAKER_04: Uh, but again, it it's it's just a tough showing for not only now, but also the future because we're you and I are officially in the zone where we are really starting to question if this coaching staff is it, if this is the the right team moving forward.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: We're not full-blown fire Matt Wells yet, but yeah, we are becoming uh skeptics at this point.
- 8:20SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry if I'm speaking for you, but I think it's just the with the results we've seen, it's kind of hard to think otherwise.
- 8:26SPEAKER_05: No, and I think you're right.
- 8:27SPEAKER_05: I think for me specifically, I haven't necessarily been pro Matt Wells through all of this, you know.
- 8:36SPEAKER_05: Uh, he hasn't convinced me one time that he is a good coach, you know.
- 8:41SPEAKER_05: There are positives I think Matt Wells does bring.
- 8:44SPEAKER_05: I think he's a really good dude, I think he runs a clean program, I think he's brought talent to Lubbock that for two straight four-win seasons, and you're bringing in insane transfers like Colin Schooler and Tyler Shuck.
- 8:57SPEAKER_05: I mean, that takes some recruiting ability.
- 8:58SPEAKER_05: That's that's a positive.
- 9:00SPEAKER_05: But if you can't put it out on the field, if you can't win games, I mean, we all know what happens.
- 9:05SPEAKER_05: So uh I push back on the Matt Wells haters because there has been Matt Wells hate since day one, and they just decided I don't like this Utah State guy, I don't think he's gonna succeed.
- 9:16SPEAKER_05: So I'm just gonna say he's crap.
- 9:18SPEAKER_05: And after every game, you know, it's just like those type of people is what gets me, you know.
- 9:25SPEAKER_05: Um, but I I can understand your frustration with them.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: I do.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: I'm frustrated with the guy right now.
- 9:30SPEAKER_05: I'm frustrated with Keith Patterson, you know.
- 9:32SPEAKER_05: I I think this coaching staff really uh needs to pull it together and change a lot of stuff, man.
- 9:41SPEAKER_05: I mean, the the preparedness, the everything is not good right now.
- 9:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, you're not getting your team ready to play these games.
- 9:50SPEAKER_05: And uh, you know, I don't like to put too much stock in the in-state rival effect.
- 9:56SPEAKER_05: And I I think as a coach, you should get your team ready for every single game the same exact way.
- 10:02SPEAKER_05: You know, I I know it's different when you're playing a Texas or a TCU versus an Iowa State or a Kansas or something like that, but you should get your team prepared and have the same mentality like, hey, we're gonna go into this freaking game and just ball out and just you know, go balls to the walls, fight it out the whole entire time.
- 10:21SPEAKER_05: And Matt Wells is not doing that.
- 10:23SPEAKER_05: And you can tell from his press conferences uh the the difference in emotion.
- 10:29SPEAKER_05: He does take a different approach after he's won a game versus after he's lost a game, and he can't stack success.
- 10:35SPEAKER_05: He talks about stacking success, but you can tell he doesn't take the same approach to it game by game, and that's a problem, and that's really something that uh, if anything, it has disappointed me the most in Matt Wells.
- 10:48SPEAKER_04: I I think that's what's so frustrating about this coaching regime is that there's it seems like there's been just a lack of energy on the field coming out of the gates, it just like it's consistency.
- 11:00SPEAKER_04: Uh just like the our performances have just been radically different.
- 11:04SPEAKER_04: It's been such a roller coaster of a season, uh, in in in the win and loss column.
- 11:10SPEAKER_04: And you know, we were saying on the uh before we started this podcast that we're probably the angriest four-and-two fan base in the country right now because that's not even a bad record.
- 11:19SPEAKER_04: Like you normally you would think, okay, it's it's it's not a spectacular season so far, but it by no means is it a bad one yet.
- 11:27SPEAKER_04: And it's just the way we've lost these games has made it feel that way.
- 11:33SPEAKER_04: Our losses have been abysmal, like disheartening, dude.
- 11:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I was at both games, and not once did it feel like we were in either one, like it just it felt like we had zero fight, none.
- 11:47SPEAKER_04: We're just gonna walk in and walk out, like it was just like we wouldn't even want to play this football game, and it's even I get I was pretty much ready to forgive them against UT after, especially after you went to the to Morgantown, um, and and put up that that pretty good win with a gutted team, but then you do it in front of the home fans.
- 12:08SPEAKER_04: It's just it's hard to excuse that behavior because for a program like Texas Tech, you cannot base seasons off of your road, your road uh record.
- 12:18SPEAKER_04: It's you gotta win the games at home, you gotta make Lubbock believe, you gotta make Red Raider Nation believe at home, or else no one's ever gonna get behind the program in a full-blown sense.
- 12:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I mean, just kind of back to the not being prepared and not taking the same mentality.
- 12:34SPEAKER_05: Look at the most prepared and the most ready we've been to start a game was West Virginia, and that's coming off a loss.
- 12:41SPEAKER_05: Every game that we've come off a win, we have come off very slow.
- 12:45SPEAKER_05: Have not started well.
- 12:47SPEAKER_05: We're just not, it's like we win a game and we're just like, okay, cool, right on.
- 12:51SPEAKER_05: You know, let's just take it easy.
- 12:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, SMA, FIU, we started off slow.
- 12:58SPEAKER_05: The and then Texas, we started off, we were awful the whole game, and then after after we win at West Virginia, we start off and play an awful game against TCU.
- 13:08SPEAKER_05: It's like that's something in the coaching, that's something in the mentality of the team that you're just like taking it easy after you win a couple games, and that's not good, man.
- 13:18SPEAKER_05: That's not good.
- 13:21SPEAKER_04: Do they just do they just prove prove it mode on and off?
- 13:24SPEAKER_04: Like, oh, we're better than this.
- 13:26SPEAKER_04: Let's get out there and prove it.
- 13:27SPEAKER_04: And they're like, Oh, that's see, we proved it, and now we're not gonna talk about what is that?
- 13:31SPEAKER_04: What is that?
- 13:32SPEAKER_04: I you're right.
- 13:34SPEAKER_04: This is a great that you're you nailed it.
- 13:35SPEAKER_04: How it's just been a role, it's been like literally like a classic rollers of coaster we're going up and down, and it's just it's it's insane, and it's up to the coaching staff.
- 13:45SPEAKER_04: You can only blame players so much, but whenever you're losing by this much, it's not on the players, it's it's definitely on the coaching schemes and the way you get your team ready.
- 13:54SPEAKER_04: It's it's unit's unbelievable.
- 13:55SPEAKER_04: TCU is not 52 to 31 better than us with talent.
- 14:00SPEAKER_04: It's just not the case that and it's just so frustrating to see us put this to do this.
- 14:07SPEAKER_04: And man, I it's it's nice that we have Kansas next, but I I'm just I I you don't know how to think about this team going forward.
- 14:18SPEAKER_04: I'm kind of losing my train of thought here, but it is.
- 14:21SPEAKER_05: You don't, yeah, you really don't.
- 14:22SPEAKER_05: I mean, what team are we gonna get?
- 14:24SPEAKER_05: Are we gonna get the team that actually gives a shit and goes into Morgantown and wins a tough game with a bunch of injuries?
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: Or are we gonna look like we did against Texas and TCU and SFA and first half FIU?
- 14:36SPEAKER_05: I mean, like, what the hell?
- 14:37SPEAKER_04: It yeah, and unfortunately, it's looking like U of H is the only good game we have so far.
- 14:43SPEAKER_04: West Virginia just got curb stomped by Baylor.
- 14:47SPEAKER_04: And granted, it was in Waco, and Baylor looks pretty good this season, but Baylor's coming off of a what a two-win season.
- 14:53SPEAKER_04: You know, it's that's what's so frustrating to me is seeing a program like Baylor make two home run hires in a row after a program decimating scandal, and how they've been able to just get up and brush themselves off while we have been in a black hole since we unjustifiedly fired Mike Leach.
- 15:12SPEAKER_04: It's the curse is real in that sense.
- 15:15SPEAKER_04: I don't think it's actually real in a real sense, but man, has it haunted us that we just we're we're the bad team in Texas now?
- 15:23SPEAKER_04: And it's so embarrassing to say that.
- 15:25SPEAKER_04: And I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.
- 15:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's yeah.
- 15:28SPEAKER_05: I mean, like I put out that tweet from the pods account that said the three things that we see after every tech loss is one fire Matt Wells, one Cliff Kingsbury wasn't that bad, and three are Brials.
- 15:40SPEAKER_05: And number four should be the one you just mentioned as well.
- 15:43SPEAKER_05: Like it's just uh our fan base is pretty easy to predict, to be honest.
- 15:49SPEAKER_05: Uh, after a tech win, you know, you're we have separate areas of the fan base that uh some are awful.
- 15:56SPEAKER_05: You get the R Bries believers that just get that way out of my face.
- 16:00SPEAKER_05: I mean, I I'm I'm not even gonna talk to you about that.
- 16:03SPEAKER_05: That's such an awful, awful thing to suggest.
- 16:07SPEAKER_05: Uh, hiring that even even pragmatically, yeah.
- 16:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, even pragmatically, guys.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: Think about it.
- 16:14SPEAKER_04: Like the guy's been out of the you know, we're talking about this.
- 16:16SPEAKER_04: The guy's been out of the coaching world for 10 like 10 years now, like uh maybe not that much, but uh, but pretty dang long in a lifetime in call in college in college world.
- 16:25SPEAKER_04: And the guy's like 65, he's he's almost ready for just retirement, guys.
- 16:29SPEAKER_04: Like, you don't want to hire a 65-year-old dude to come and fix a program like Texas Tech.
- 16:34SPEAKER_04: It's it's this sounds like less miles to Kansas, if any at its at best, it sounds like that.
- 16:40SPEAKER_04: At worst, it sounds like you're hiring a guy that allowed the worst scandal in all of college sports.
- 16:45SPEAKER_04: So please, under I don't even want to get into he's he got exonerated on that.
- 16:50SPEAKER_04: He is not the guy.
- 16:53SPEAKER_05: Not to mention he's a shit human being.
- 16:56SPEAKER_05: So, how about we have some morals and not hire this friggin' idiot from Baylor that was the leader of you know one of the biggest scandals in college football history?
- 17:05SPEAKER_05: So, uh, let's throw that out the window.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: That's all we'll say on our briles.
- 17:08SPEAKER_05: We're not gonna go into it any deeper.
- 17:10SPEAKER_05: But uh, the Kingsbury apologists kind of get me too.
- 17:13SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's like, you know, Cliff I and it makes it worse because he's doing so well in Arizona, which we've said multiple times that we're very happy that he's doing well, where we always thought Cliff was a good coach in terms of play calling, in terms of offensive mind, all that good stuff.
- 17:33SPEAKER_05: Uh, the thing is, you know, he's now coaching in the NFL where he doesn't have to recruit, and recruiting was his downfall at Texas Tech.
- 17:40SPEAKER_05: He never got a full team together.
- 17:42SPEAKER_05: Yes, he got Patrick Mahomes to Texas Tech.
- 17:44SPEAKER_05: He also won five and seven games with Patrick Mahomes.
- 17:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, so you know, Cliff Kingsbury definitely deserved to be fired at the time.
- 17:53SPEAKER_05: Uh, and he still, I mean, we would make the same decision.
- 17:56SPEAKER_05: 10 times out of 10, you get a guy who's been here for we gave him six years, and he goes 19 and 35 or whatever it was in conference during those six years.
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: He deserves to be fired.
- 18:06SPEAKER_05: He won one bowl game.
- 18:08SPEAKER_05: I mean, I know yeah, yeah, it was awful.
- 18:11SPEAKER_05: That guy, I'm sorry.
- 18:13SPEAKER_05: No, go ahead.
- 18:14SPEAKER_05: Go ahead.
- 18:15SPEAKER_04: No, I'll I was just gonna say I always go on record by saying it wasn't a bad hire.
- 18:19SPEAKER_04: I don't think good taking a chance on Cliff Kingsbury was a bad move.
- 18:23SPEAKER_04: Um, because especially because it felt like we're going right back to the air raid, right back to what we knew worked at Texas Tech.
- 18:29SPEAKER_04: Um, but and and obviously he's a golden boy, and we gave him a fair shake, much for much longer than most would, and it just didn't work out.
- 18:37SPEAKER_04: Just because Matt Wells may not turn out to be the answer, doesn't mean Matt Cliff Kingsbury was, and it is we got to remember that.
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: Like, just because we made a bad hire before now doesn't mean that was a bad hire before.
- 18:49SPEAKER_04: So it's that's just part of the business.
- 18:51SPEAKER_04: You get one or the other, and unfortunately, these these may be both the other, unfortunately, unfortunately.
- 18:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and now you're talking about two head coaches that have not worked out for the most part.
- 19:04SPEAKER_05: Uh, and and then, of course, the conversation then leads to our athletic director and Kirby Hoke.
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: Uh, a lot of people are calling for his head after you know, if Matt Wells were to get fired, they're thinking, hey, Kirby Hoke made two straight, really bad hires in football.
- 19:20SPEAKER_05: He needs to go as well.
- 19:21SPEAKER_05: And to those people, I I just uh it's an awful idea.
- 19:26SPEAKER_05: It's Kirby Hokut has done so much good for this program.
- 19:29SPEAKER_05: And yes, I know he's the fourth highest AD in the country, and he can't hire a good football coach.
- 19:34SPEAKER_05: I understand.
- 19:34SPEAKER_05: He deserves one more shot at a football coach before we start thinking about firing Kirby Hocut.
- 19:39SPEAKER_04: I agree.
- 19:40SPEAKER_04: I mean, basketball, baseball, track and field, uh, go on and on has soared.
- 19:44SPEAKER_04: Uh, football and some of the girls' sports have been a bit of a black guy on his resume, otherwise, but he's been able to garner so much booster support, it's insane.
- 19:52SPEAKER_04: Like the projects that have been built around this athletic department have been crazy.
- 19:56SPEAKER_04: Let's like like the womble announcement, womble part two announcement for the football for the football program.
- 20:03SPEAKER_04: That's gonna be obviously an awesome addition to the our brand new training uh facility.
- 20:09SPEAKER_04: But it it's it's we can't have that discussion yet, and but I do understand the frustration.
- 20:14SPEAKER_04: Football is the cash cow, football is the most important sport in Texas, and we are a big Texas school, so we all want football to be great.
- 20:24SPEAKER_04: And whenever you have an athletic director who's held in such high regard, but can't seem to get the most important hiring decision right, it's really frustrating to see.
- 20:32SPEAKER_04: And I get it, and the buck stops at him.
- 20:34SPEAKER_04: He's paid incredibly well, and he's he's paid well to take this kind of flack.
- 20:38SPEAKER_04: So I under I definitely understand that the flack he's getting, but I'm with you.
- 20:42SPEAKER_04: I think he deserves at least one more hire if Matt Wells doesn't work out, uh, because he's just done so much good for the uh the school, otherwise.
- 20:49SPEAKER_04: And he was one of the architects.
- 20:51SPEAKER_04: You brought this up earlier, he's one of the architects of the new Big 12, which is going to keep tech in the in the power discussion, and that was key to making sure we keep on the right path overall.
- 21:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, to me, that was even more important than what you can do for uh our football program is keep us relevant in a conference that is relevant.
- 21:11SPEAKER_05: And Kirby Hokud really did step up after UTNOU left and kept us in a in a Big 12 conference that's going to be good and gonna have a good product out there.
- 21:22SPEAKER_05: So he deserves a lot of credit for that.
- 21:24SPEAKER_05: And you know, I just think, like you said, with the complete transformation of the basketball program, uh, the way he's making our baseball program uh constantly elite.
- 21:37SPEAKER_05: Every I mean, and that's you know, you know, that's credit to Tim Tadlock, too.
- 21:41SPEAKER_05: But uh, or probably more so to Tim Tadlock, but you know, Kirby Kirby got that going and he got that done.
- 21:47SPEAKER_05: And all these facility upgrades have been insane.
- 21:50SPEAKER_05: He's a he's a person that knows everybody.
- 21:53SPEAKER_05: I mean, he's got connections everywhere, and that's one of the most important things you can have as an A D.
- 21:58SPEAKER_05: So uh the people that Want Kirby gone.
- 22:01SPEAKER_05: Just need to have a little patience here.
- 22:03SPEAKER_05: Take it easy.
- 22:03SPEAKER_05: Just because he's doing bad in one sport.
- 22:06SPEAKER_05: And he's had, you know, he has had a couple of those black eyes, like you mentioned with the women's sport.
- 22:10SPEAKER_05: But uh man, he's just done so much good to where you know I can't justify wanting to fire the guy.
- 22:18SPEAKER_05: I really can't.
- 22:21SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 22:21SPEAKER_04: There's so many, there's so many athletic departments out there that would take Kirby Hogut tomorrow.
- 22:25SPEAKER_04: And that's why that's probably why he's paid so well.
- 22:27SPEAKER_04: He took a a program like Texas Tech, which is generally a middle of the pack in power power five speak.
- 22:35SPEAKER_04: And he's really elevated pretty much everything to the up the highest echelon, except for football.
- 22:41SPEAKER_04: And that's awesome to say.
- 22:42SPEAKER_04: I love Texas Tech basketball, I love Texas Tech Baseball and all the others.
- 22:46SPEAKER_04: It's it's a huge point of pride for us, and that is a lot a lot in part because of Kirby Hokkaud.
- 22:52SPEAKER_04: Uh, so I I do that is I do thank him for that, and I 100% with you that uh definitely gonna be a Kirby defender for at least one more round of football.
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: And even then, it's it's just tough because how much good outweighs some bad?
- 23:08SPEAKER_04: Because it's just some bad, it's a big bad, but quantity-wise, it's a little bit.
- 23:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so I mean, you know, the Kirby Oak stuff I think needs to be put off for a little bit longer, you know.
- 23:20SPEAKER_05: Take it easy on Kirby here because uh he's not the one that is uh not coaching our football team well.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: I was gonna say and to double down on the Arp Riles and Kirby thing is there's not a shortage of coaches that want to coach a Texas Tech.
- 23:32SPEAKER_04: So we don't need to limit ourselves to somebody like Arp Riles, and Kirby can definitely pick from a better pool of candidates.
- 23:40SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 23:41SPEAKER_04: There's a lot out there.
- 23:42SPEAKER_04: We come to that.
- 23:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, if we come to that, hopefully we won't.
- 23:46SPEAKER_05: There's still that little bit of faith right here that Matt Wells can, you know, turn out something good for this program, but uh we'll just have to see.
- 23:54SPEAKER_05: Uh, but let let's, I mean, let's stop talking about the sadness.
- 23:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, let's go to talk about a couple different games that happened this week, and then we'll go into a little talk and tech breakdown and then talk about the Kansas game a little bit.
- 24:06SPEAKER_05: Uh, so let's talk about around the Big 12.
- 24:08SPEAKER_05: Let's start with Baylor uh defeating West Virginia, really just slapping them around 45 to 20 in Waco.
- 24:15SPEAKER_05: Uh Baylor looks great, man.
- 24:17SPEAKER_05: And West Virginia uh does not.
- 24:20SPEAKER_05: Uh Neil Brown, man.
- 24:22SPEAKER_05: He just he kind of had the same mistakes he did in the tech game.
- 24:24SPEAKER_05: He used timeouts when he didn't need to.
- 24:26SPEAKER_05: He keeps busting out Dagey, and Dagey is not good.
- 24:30SPEAKER_05: Uh, and he keeps believing in him.
- 24:32SPEAKER_05: And you know, uh Baylor really sh really put it to him.
- 24:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it definitely mirrored our game with them, you know, because we Baylor came out and pretty much could have won the game in the first half, pretty much.
- 24:43SPEAKER_04: And but Baylor, instead of coming out and letting West Virginia cut take over in the second half, they just kept the pedals in the metal and kept West Virginia out pretty much the whole game, uh, which is what we should have done, but it was still still a good win.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: Um but this kind of stings like this is this is the one we're hanging our hat on in the Big 12 right now.
- 25:00SPEAKER_04: Baylor comes out of here in year two, Dave Aranda, and it's like lol, bad team.
- 25:05SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna kick their butts, and they did.
- 25:06SPEAKER_04: And um, but it's it's scary that we might have another good Baylor uh team on our hands, they might be one of like top four in the conference.
- 25:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's looking like it, and I guess we'll just see if West Virginia they may just go ahead and fall from here on.
- 25:22SPEAKER_04: Thank you, West Virginia, for taking our place in ninth in the Big 12 with the future talks right now.
- 25:28SPEAKER_04: Okay, thank you very much.
- 25:29SPEAKER_04: It's not us, so no matter what, I don't think we're finishing ninth.
- 25:32SPEAKER_04: So get out of our faces, Mountaineers.
- 25:34SPEAKER_05: Let's go, please.
- 25:36SPEAKER_05: Oh god.
- 25:37SPEAKER_05: Uh, yeah, not not a lot of good from a Texas Tech fan's perspective after seeing uh this game, but there was some bright spots of this weekend, and that was the Texas Longhorns blowing it to the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River showdown, shootout, rivalry, whatever it's called.
- 25:57SPEAKER_05: Uh, it was very disappointing watching the beginning of that game because UT looked like they were running away with it, and then all of a sudden, bam, OU puts in Caleb Williams, backup quarterback, takes out Spencer Radler, and he leads the comeback and destroys Texas fans' hearts.
- 26:12SPEAKER_05: It was tremendous to watch.
- 26:15SPEAKER_04: In the last second, that I could not have scripted a better way for UT to lose that game either.
- 26:19SPEAKER_04: Like, I feel like that was way better than getting blown out, E2.
- 26:23SPEAKER_04: So, like they thought they were done in the first half, and a lot of us probably did too.
- 26:28SPEAKER_04: We thought you know, we were we were all kind of waiting for this to happen to OU.
- 26:32SPEAKER_04: We just didn't know when, uh, because OU has looked like a pretender all year.
- 26:36SPEAKER_04: But you know, it looks like Lincoln Riley really coached their way to the win there and uh uh making those adjustments and putting it in the backup.
- 26:43SPEAKER_04: So it looks like Spencer Rattler may be uh U of H or SMU next.
- 26:47SPEAKER_04: So you know they might be uh you might be heading somewhere else, but uh uh anyway.
- 26:53SPEAKER_04: But it looks like Lincoln Riley may have figured that team out, and they're probably gonna win the Big 12, no doubt now.
- 26:58SPEAKER_05: That that's a gutsy decision, man.
- 27:01SPEAKER_05: I mean, Spencer Rattler is your what was he number one quarterback coming out of high school, uh Heisman favorite to start the year, and you're going in the biggest game of your season and you're benching the guy for the backup.
- 27:13SPEAKER_05: And you know, it's easy to bench a guy for another five-star, but uh, you know, it's it's it's a difficult decision, you know, to to go and bench Spencer Radler.
- 27:23SPEAKER_05: So yeah, it just takes a lot for Lincoln Riley to make that decision.
- 27:26SPEAKER_05: I mean, that's that's big time.
- 27:27SPEAKER_05: So OU squeezes one out uh against Texas, and uh they're probably gonna roll with Caleb Williams moving forward, and they're like you said, probably gonna win the Big 12.
- 27:37SPEAKER_04: You have to, and and you know, it's it is a funny loss for UT, but Sark definitely has the the team moving in a good direction, unfortunately.
- 27:46SPEAKER_04: And you know, UT's look pretty good all year outside of a couple outliers, so that's frustrating.
- 27:51SPEAKER_05: Yep, it's frustrating seeing other teams succeed uh when we are absolutely not.
- 27:57SPEAKER_05: So uh moving on, it was good to see Texas lose, horns down always.
- 28:01SPEAKER_05: Um, let's move on to the four coming in members.
- 28:05SPEAKER_05: Uh BYU taking an L, their first L of the season, uh falling to Boise State 26 to 17.
- 28:12SPEAKER_05: This is a tough one for the Kooks, losing in Provo to a Boise State team that was two and three going into this game, uh, losing record.
- 28:20SPEAKER_05: Um, and granted, those losses were to pretty pretty good teams.
- 28:24SPEAKER_05: I mean, UCF and uh who is not looking good as well, but uh UCF, Nevada, and I think uh uh somebody else, I can't remember.
- 28:32SPEAKER_05: I think it was a P5 team, but um oh, it was Oklahoma State.
- 28:36SPEAKER_05: That's what it was.
- 28:36SPEAKER_05: So it was uh so uh BYU drops this one.
- 28:40SPEAKER_05: This is tough.
- 28:40SPEAKER_05: Uh they were they just made it into the top 10, they're playing Baylor next week, and they take this L.
- 28:47SPEAKER_05: They might have been looking forward to the Baylor game a little too much.
- 28:50SPEAKER_05: Uh, but yeah, Boise State took it to them.
- 28:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like you said, they just entered the top 10, and they're probably gonna start being wrapped up into playoff talks within the next few games.
- 29:01SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, this they could still put together a spectacular season.
- 29:05SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, what it's one loss to probably a pretty good team.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: Boise State always puts together a pretty good team, and like I said, they've only lost and pretty close for the most part to good teams.
- 29:14SPEAKER_04: So it's not a Q gel, and it looks like turnovers really cursed the cugs there.
- 29:20SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, this this Baylor game might be closer than what people were thinking with the way Baylor's looking and with the way that uh BYU finally drops a game that was completely unexpected.
- 29:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's absolutely gonna be a game to watch next week.
- 29:33SPEAKER_05: Um, and against two of the future Big 12, you know, Baylor and BYU going at it.
- 29:39SPEAKER_05: So uh this versus the Mormons.
- 29:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 29:44SPEAKER_05: So let's move on.
- 29:45SPEAKER_05: Uh well, we don't really have to talk about this one much.
- 29:47SPEAKER_05: Cincinnati just absolutely demolishes temple, uh, 52 to 3.
- 29:52SPEAKER_05: Uh yikes, Cincinnati fantastic temple, not so much.
- 29:58SPEAKER_04: You're talking about number three Cincinnati Bearcats, man.
- 30:02SPEAKER_04: A G5 team is officially squarely in the playoff talk, and that's so great to see.
- 30:08SPEAKER_04: And what a statement to be making before you're joining the Big 12, man.
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: It just shows like ESPN and all the media partners that the Big 12 is not going anywhere in national perception.
- 30:15SPEAKER_04: So I love it.
- 30:16SPEAKER_04: I'm cheering for the beer bearcats from here on out.
- 30:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 30:20SPEAKER_05: And they have a very easy, very favorable schedule moving forward.
- 30:24SPEAKER_05: So, I mean, if Cincinnati just doesn't blow it, you know, they're looking at a prime position.
- 30:28SPEAKER_05: So uh crazy to say that about a G5 team, but I'm sure the move to the Big 12 kind of boosts them up a little bit as well.
- 30:34SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, they crushed them.
- 30:36SPEAKER_05: So moving on.
- 30:37SPEAKER_05: Houston, like like we talked about pre-pod, Houston's looking good ever since the tech game, man.
- 30:42SPEAKER_05: They take down two lane 40 to 22, and these are convincing wins uh for the Cougars.
- 30:47SPEAKER_05: So this makes Tech's win look a little better.
- 30:50SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 30:51SPEAKER_04: This is by far tech's best win.
- 30:53SPEAKER_04: You know, I were talking about this earlier that perhaps Houston beats us now that we're further into the season.
- 30:57SPEAKER_04: So I'm glad that we uh got them when we did.
- 31:00SPEAKER_04: But just yeah, impressive work from Dana and the Houston Cougars because uh, you know, who's gonna stop the premier?
- 31:06SPEAKER_04: I guess they got they got to get to SMU's a great team.
- 31:08SPEAKER_04: Um, but they're all all Cincinnati, SMU, and Houston are definitely the favorites in the American race.
- 31:15SPEAKER_04: So it'll be interesting to see how it comes down to the end with these feature big 12 teams.
- 31:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 31:20SPEAKER_05: So uh finishing off with the fourth and final of the future conference mates, UCF taking down East Carolina.
- 31:28SPEAKER_05: They beat them 20 to 16.
- 31:30SPEAKER_05: Uh, UCF been teetering uh a good amount these last few weeks.
- 31:34SPEAKER_05: They're not looking fantastic.
- 31:36SPEAKER_05: Uh the Gus bus is uh barely making it to the next gas station, and we'll see.
- 31:41SPEAKER_05: Uh, but yeah, I mean, East Carolina, I don't think is very good.
- 31:45SPEAKER_05: And to beat them only by four, uh, that's not not great.
- 31:48SPEAKER_04: It has been a strange season for them.
- 31:50SPEAKER_04: I think they had some good hype coming into the season uh as American favorites, and now it doesn't look like they're in the conversation at all.
- 31:57SPEAKER_05: No, absolutely not.
- 31:59SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, UCF can still pull out a pretty good year.
- 32:02SPEAKER_05: Uh, they're still a good ad to the conference, but uh yeah, not not looking great right now for the Knights.
- 32:08SPEAKER_05: So that'll do it uh for around the Big 12.
- 32:11SPEAKER_05: Let's move on to the talk and tech breakdown.
- 32:13SPEAKER_05: And before we get into the other sports, we need to talk about the new Womble facility because this is another great addition to Texas Tech Athletics.
- 32:21SPEAKER_05: Uh Dusty Womble, one of I mean, everybody wants a donor like Dusty Womble, man.
- 32:26SPEAKER_05: This guy, uh very, very uh very rich.
- 32:30SPEAKER_05: And he is uh donating, uh, he funded the basketball center,$10 million to that.
- 32:36SPEAKER_05: Now he's given$20 million to this new$40 to$50 million football facility.
- 32:41SPEAKER_05: I mean, this guy's out here, he really cares.
- 32:43SPEAKER_05: And I mean, it's such a such a good thing to have guys like him uh involved with Texas Tech.
- 32:49SPEAKER_05: I mean, this dude's single-handedly funding the athletic program.
- 32:52SPEAKER_05: It's insane.
- 32:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 32:54SPEAKER_04: I uh family of guns up nation, I'll be sure.
- 32:57SPEAKER_04: I like what he tweeted that he said that uh it looks like Texas Tech has their T-Boon pickings, and that's typically the case right now, man.
- 33:03SPEAKER_04: Uh, and you're right, it's it's great to have guys that believe in Texas Tech, even when even in a program that hasn't been doing well for a decade, is still funding them to the to the as the highest ability he can to make sure that we we put out the best product facility-wise that matches pretty much anybody in the country.
- 33:21SPEAKER_04: So it's it's awesome to have donors that are still so committed to Texas Tech, um, because they want to see us, they want to see Texas succeed more than any of us.
- 33:29SPEAKER_04: And I like that they put their money where their mouth is.
- 33:31SPEAKER_04: Not many fans can say it.
- 33:32SPEAKER_05: No, absolutely.
- 33:34SPEAKER_05: So it's always a blessing to have these type of people uh involved with the university.
- 33:38SPEAKER_05: And I'm sure you know, uh, this dude is a diehard red writer, he just wants to see some success, just like all of us.
- 33:45SPEAKER_05: He's just got the funds to back it.
- 33:47SPEAKER_05: So uh props to him, man.
- 33:49SPEAKER_05: That's that's a huge give and a huge uh uh thing for Texas Tech Athletics.
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: Is are we are we going to be uh uh Dustin Wobble presents Texas Tech University?
- 33:59SPEAKER_04: Is that what it's it's I I put I put on Twitter, yeah, I put on Twitter that it's gonna be Dustin R.
- 34:05SPEAKER_05: Womble presents the city of Lubbock here pretty soon.
- 34:08SPEAKER_05: So this guy's just gonna fund everything.
- 34:10SPEAKER_05: He's gonna put all of his money towards Texas Tech and the city of Lubbock.
- 34:15SPEAKER_05: And we will be blessed to have it so.
- 34:18SPEAKER_05: Yes, no doubt, no doubt.
- 34:20SPEAKER_05: So uh that was awesome.
- 34:21SPEAKER_05: That was awesome to see.
- 34:22SPEAKER_05: I'm sure it's gonna be an unbelievable facility, much like the Womble is currently at the basketball womble.
- 34:28SPEAKER_05: I don't know what we're gonna call these uh facilities, how we're gonna differentiate them.
- 34:32SPEAKER_05: Uh, it was funny.
- 34:33SPEAKER_05: I was watching the press conference with uh Dustin Womble, and he was like, uh he was like, I told my kids we should call it the Womble Training Facility, but then you know, you kind of put that acronym together, doesn't sound so good.
- 34:45SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, a little WTF action uh so uh that kind of stayed a lot.
- 34:51SPEAKER_05: That would be awesome.
- 34:52SPEAKER_05: It would be great.
- 34:53SPEAKER_05: I would love it, but you know I would have loved that.
- 34:55SPEAKER_05: I would have loved it.
- 34:56SPEAKER_05: I may call it that anyway.
- 34:57SPEAKER_05: So uh but but yeah, that was uh that was a pretty funny tidbit I I heard from his presser.
- 35:03SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, I mean, seriously, this guy uh uh he's given he's given all that he can, and that's fantastic.
- 35:11SPEAKER_04: For sure, man.
- 35:12SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm sure he's not done yet either.
- 35:14SPEAKER_04: So it'll be cool to see this thing come to uh come together, and hopefully our football team can please make good use of it for the love of God.
- 35:21SPEAKER_05: Good lord, let's see some improvement, guys.
- 35:24SPEAKER_04: Come on, out of wobble building number two.
- 35:27SPEAKER_05: Is is this so is one of them good team wobble and the other one bad team wobble?
- 35:31SPEAKER_05: I mean, I guess right now that's what that's what we're gonna call it.
- 35:35SPEAKER_05: Good wobble, bad wobble right now.
- 35:38SPEAKER_05: But oh man, but I mean, do you have anything else on uh on Dusty Wobble?
- 35:45SPEAKER_04: No, just God bless him, man.
- 35:47SPEAKER_04: They thank you so much for the contributions to the athletic program.
- 35:50SPEAKER_04: I know we with I'm sure all the fans are very grateful for it, and I want to see make us see us make good use of it, man.
- 35:56SPEAKER_04: I want us to be a national power in both basketball and football, not at all wishful thinking.
- 36:01SPEAKER_04: Let's go, please.
- 36:03SPEAKER_05: Please.
- 36:04SPEAKER_05: Oh, but let's move on.
- 36:06SPEAKER_05: Let's talk about some of the other sports around campus.
- 36:08SPEAKER_05: We got starting off with soccer, like we always do, uh, tied with Oklahoma State, uh, 1-1 in our game.
- 36:15SPEAKER_05: Uh, went to overtime.
- 36:16SPEAKER_05: It was a crazy game.
- 36:18SPEAKER_05: Uh, if you I got to catch a little bit of it uh towards the end there, Madison White was huge.
- 36:23SPEAKER_05: The our goalkeeper came up with some huge saves there at the end.
- 36:26SPEAKER_05: Oklahoma State's a good team, and uh, they were they were, I think they had about 12 shots on goal, and uh, you know, she she blocked a few of them, caught one right in the air towards the end that would have put them up, and then of course, uh Kirsten Davis uh adds another goal to her resume.
- 36:41SPEAKER_05: She's fantastic.
- 36:43SPEAKER_04: Keepers are the most important player on the field, bro.
- 36:46SPEAKER_04: They're the MVPs, no matter the sport, no matter what.
- 36:51SPEAKER_05: Former Texas Tech Club lacrosse goalie Tristan McGonagall saying this.
- 36:55SPEAKER_04: So take that with a grain of slide the club part in there, all right?
- 36:59SPEAKER_04: You should at least include club at the end, so it sounds like you know, you know, they call them soccer clubs or football clubs.
- 37:06SPEAKER_04: So have a whatever, bro.
- 37:08SPEAKER_04: But yeah, you know, keepers are in, and that great, great.
- 37:11SPEAKER_04: I'm not at all surprised.
- 37:12SPEAKER_04: Those are two huge stars on the team, so I'm glad they came up when they did because that we that's what you expect out of your team MVPs.
- 37:17SPEAKER_04: So good work on this.
- 37:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 37:19SPEAKER_05: And a tie is much better than a loss, so you know, we'll take it.
- 37:22SPEAKER_05: But um, up next, we uh go to Iowa State on the 14th.
- 37:26SPEAKER_05: Uh games at 6 p.m.
- 37:28SPEAKER_05: And then we have a game at West Virginia, who also has a very good team uh on the 17th at noon.
- 37:34SPEAKER_05: So again, if you're around the house, if you're if you have a chance to watch it, go support the ladies uh with soccer.
- 37:40SPEAKER_05: Let's move on to volleyball, splitting the series with Iowa State one-one.
- 37:45SPEAKER_05: Uh Iowa State got the first one winning two sets to three.
- 37:48SPEAKER_05: Tech responded with a nice win in the second match, winning three sets to one.
- 37:53SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, nice for the volleyball team.
- 37:55SPEAKER_05: Pick up another conference win.
- 37:56SPEAKER_05: Gotta love it with how you know how down the program has been the last couple of years.
- 38:00SPEAKER_05: So good to see them get conference wins here and there.
- 38:03SPEAKER_05: Uh, up next, they have a two-match series at OU in Norman.
- 38:07SPEAKER_05: So we'll see how that goes.
- 38:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, any good any progress is good progress for uh for how they look right now.
- 38:13SPEAKER_04: So I'm glad to see them split at least splitting with the conference opponents.
- 38:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 38:17SPEAKER_05: So let's move on to golf.
- 38:19SPEAKER_05: We'll talk the women's golf first, who had a great weekend, finished third in the Blessings Collegiate in Fayetteville, three players finishing in the top 15 individually.
- 38:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, Gay La Dumez and Anna Dong tied for fourth overall uh individually.
- 38:34SPEAKER_05: So uh awesome performance from the ladies um on the course.
- 38:38SPEAKER_05: Up next, they have the Alliani Collegiate from October 11th through the 12th.
- 38:44SPEAKER_04: Golf school.
- 38:45SPEAKER_04: End of statement.
- 38:47SPEAKER_05: Golf school all the time.
- 38:48SPEAKER_05: Maybe not with the men's, though, because they finished seventh out of 10 in the blessings collegiate on the men's side.
- 38:54SPEAKER_05: Kind of a rough showing for our guys, but up next, they do have Big 12 match play tournament starting.
- 39:00SPEAKER_05: It's in Hockley, Texas from October 11th through the 13th.
- 39:04SPEAKER_05: So hopefully we can get a little bounce back from the men's side.
- 39:07SPEAKER_05: Come on, boys, golf school, defend that title with pride.
- 39:12SPEAKER_05: We've always been a golf school, according to us here on forever and always.
- 39:19SPEAKER_05: But no, that's it for the for the talk and tech breakdown.
- 39:22SPEAKER_05: Always support the smaller sports around campus.
- 39:24SPEAKER_05: Let's move on to uh the Kansas preview.
- 39:27SPEAKER_05: We we do have a game this weekend.
- 39:29SPEAKER_04: The football season's still going.
- 39:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, football season's still going.
- 39:34SPEAKER_05: Um, it's not looking good, but we are four and two.
- 39:37SPEAKER_05: We're gonna stay positive.
- 39:39SPEAKER_05: Four and two.
- 39:40SPEAKER_05: We're gonna stay positive.
- 39:42SPEAKER_05: We're going to Lawrence and hopefully we kick their butt.
- 39:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, that game is on Saturday, October 16th, 3 p.m.
- 39:51SPEAKER_05: on ESPN Plus.
- 39:52SPEAKER_05: We are on ESPN Plus, so go get the subscription.
- 39:56SPEAKER_05: Uh if you want to watch this game, it is like I said, in Lawrence at Memorial Stadium.
- 40:02SPEAKER_05: Uh Texas Tech opening up as a 16 and a half point favorite for this one.
- 40:07SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 40:07SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay.
- 40:09SPEAKER_04: That's a lot more than I thought it was gonna be.
- 40:11SPEAKER_04: And I'm very pleased to hear it as so.
- 40:14SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, this it is Kansas, and Kansas is down bad right now.
- 40:19SPEAKER_04: It's year one under a new coach, and they they have not been any good, so there's just no excuse not to go out there and pummel them if we don't.
- 40:27SPEAKER_04: Next week will not be a fun podcast, and the and this one was a blast.
- 40:32SPEAKER_04: This episode has been so much fun.
- 40:34SPEAKER_04: But next week we'll we won't be able to have as much fun.
- 40:39SPEAKER_04: So if that's the case, but I I don't see us dropping the the the game in Lawrence like now else did last time we were in the Lawrence.
- 40:46SPEAKER_04: Um, but what kind of worries me about this game, and I'm sure everyone's like that what just one thing worries you is is definitely I'm sure Kansas is thinking that we're the one of the few teams they have the ability to beat.
- 41:00SPEAKER_04: So I'm wondering it.
- 41:01SPEAKER_04: I'm wondering if perhaps they come out with a little more ferocity, a little more creativity, a little more ballsiness with the play calling and stuff against us.
- 41:07SPEAKER_04: Because after watching our our defense tape, I'm sure they're like, we can we can throw a thing or two together to maybe nab this one.
- 41:15SPEAKER_04: And that's what kind of scares me.
- 41:17SPEAKER_04: Uh but uh it's it's not it's kind of hard to get excited about a Kansas game either way.
- 41:22SPEAKER_04: You win you that's what you're supposed to do.
- 41:26SPEAKER_04: It's it's Kansas, but if you lose, it's it's doomsday.
- 41:30SPEAKER_04: So nothing really good comes with these games.
- 41:33SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 41:33SPEAKER_05: Uh I mean, like you mentioned, Kansas is straight up not good, like they're just not.
- 41:38SPEAKER_05: Uh they're they're one and four on the year, their only win was over FCS South Dakota, and it was by three points.
- 41:43SPEAKER_05: I mean, they're not a good team.
- 41:45SPEAKER_05: Uh, they they have some players that could potentially do something, but uh, you know, it's just it's just a matter of what Texas Tech team is going to come out there and play.
- 41:53SPEAKER_05: Is it gonna be the one that really doesn't care and doesn't seem to give a lot of effort out there, or is it gonna be, you know, a rejuvenated, kind of coming off a loss Texas Tech team like we saw in Morgantown?
- 42:05SPEAKER_05: So uh we should win this game easily, but there's no givens with a Matt Wells coach Texas Tech team, and that stinks uh to say it really does.
- 42:13SPEAKER_05: But uh I I did want to talk to you about implications if we do lose this game.
- 42:18SPEAKER_05: I mean, what what's your thoughts here with with Matt Wells if we do happen to lose against Kansas?
- 42:26SPEAKER_04: If we lose, uh I think it's done.
- 42:29SPEAKER_04: The pro the coaching staff is just kind of you know dead and walking, because I don't think we fire them after the game, but I think at the end of the season, if if they don't if unless they make some miraculous comeback and win like three more conference games or something like that, it's it's time to you know, you know, clean clean the slate and move on because there's no excuse to lose to this Kansas team.
- 42:49SPEAKER_04: There's and there really hasn't been any excuse to be losing these games like we did.
- 42:53SPEAKER_04: I've said before that I'm not mad that we're four and two, it's the way we're losing the games that makes me mad.
- 43:00SPEAKER_04: And there is just there would be no excuse to lose to this Kansas team.
- 43:04SPEAKER_04: And if we do, he Matt Wells will never win the fan base back, it's done.
- 43:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, I'm not like I have been a strong proponent for not firing him midseason, but if he goes and loses this game to this Kansas team, I mean, there's not any real choice that you have other than to just can him right there because you would you would you out right there on the far mat?
- 43:24SPEAKER_05: I honestly I wouldn't let him get back on the bus.
- 43:26SPEAKER_05: I wouldn't it was that's that's so ridiculous if you were to lose to this Kansas team.
- 43:32SPEAKER_05: This Kansas team is awful, straight up horrible.
- 43:35SPEAKER_04: Well, what do you do do you make Sonny Cumby the interim and move on?
- 43:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think you you keep Sonny Cumby on as interim coach and let him do his thing for the rest of the season, see what he can do.
- 43:46SPEAKER_05: Um, as a head, as a you know, just a head interim coach, see if he can win a game or two.
- 43:51SPEAKER_05: But uh you fire Keith Patterson and you f because it's probably gonna be on the defense.
- 43:55SPEAKER_05: You think about true the the downfall of this team this year has been the defense.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: So if it's another bad defensive showing, you fire Matt Wells and you fire Keith Patterson right away.
- 44:05SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's not that's inexcusable.
- 44:07SPEAKER_04: I think I think I had to agree with you.
- 44:08SPEAKER_04: I think you changed my mind.
- 44:10SPEAKER_04: Uh there's no excuse to losing to this Kansas team this bad.
- 44:14SPEAKER_04: You kind of for you kind of almost, almost forgave him for losing in Lawrence year one.
- 44:20SPEAKER_04: Almost.
- 44:21SPEAKER_04: Because you know, Kansas one here.
- 44:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's year one, and Kansas gets one here and there, uh, every once in a while.
- 44:27SPEAKER_04: And we were just that bad luck that year.
- 44:29SPEAKER_04: It was still a crappy year, but still.
- 44:32SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, you're right.
- 44:33SPEAKER_04: You know what?
- 44:33SPEAKER_04: I I think I have to agree with you.
- 44:35SPEAKER_04: I think I'd actually feel better about giving the reins to somebody like Sunny Cumbe from here on to actually give you any shot of winning any more games.
- 44:40SPEAKER_04: And obviously, then Sunny Cumbe can fight for his his his location, his his landing location from there.
- 44:47SPEAKER_04: So uh yeah, we we we're probably having this conversation for no reason, hopefully.
- 44:54SPEAKER_04: But it's you're but you're right.
- 44:56SPEAKER_04: It the the two losses and even some of the wins haven't given a lot of hope moving forward that this team is ready to make the next step that Matt Wells was hired to do.
- 45:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, the one thing I'm I'm worried about with firing a coach midseason is just keeping the recruits and the young guys that we already have on our team, you know, the the Baron Mortons and the Cameron Valdez and the Jerain Bradleys, those type of guys.
- 45:20SPEAKER_05: I don't want to lose those players because they are really talented.
- 45:23SPEAKER_05: And you know, when you fire a guy that recruited you to that school, you know, it's it it stinks.
- 45:28SPEAKER_05: The the good thing I would think about keeping Sonny Cumby as an interim potentially would be that he was a big part of that reason to bring them to tech.
- 45:37SPEAKER_05: And you know, we may even consider Sonny Cumbie as the next head coach, who knows?
- 45:41SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 45:41SPEAKER_05: But these are all hypotheticals.
- 45:43SPEAKER_05: I hope it doesn't come to fruition after this Kansas game.
- 45:45SPEAKER_05: But uh, it's seriously, it's it's I mean, I I'm I'm just about fed up if you lose to Kansas again, man.
- 45:52SPEAKER_04: I I just can't believe the 180 we've taken on this pod.
- 45:55SPEAKER_04: We are like a big this is like a big Keith Patterson pod that you're like this is the best tech defense we've seen in a long time, and just the way it's it has spun out, how it just crumbles under adversity for the most part is unbelievable.
- 46:09SPEAKER_04: How he it comes out so flat, where in it we've we've seen two games this year where the opposing team punts like once or twice the entire game, and that's just unacceptable.
- 46:22SPEAKER_04: You're never gonna win games that way, no matter how good the offense is.
- 46:25SPEAKER_04: We've lived that life before, and we're tired of it.
- 46:28SPEAKER_04: And uh Keith Patterson needs to be coaching for his job, and same with, of course, Coach Wells as well.
- 46:34SPEAKER_04: Um, next next week.
- 46:36SPEAKER_04: But even if they come out alive, I would think Coach Patterson's probably coaching for his life for the remainder of the season because the only way looking forward, the only way Matt Wells would keep his job for another year if we make it six and six, is he probably would have to get rid of Keith Patterson.
- 46:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, this is just this is just last year all over again with David Yost.
- 46:53SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's like, okay, you fired this coordinator, now here's your second shot.
- 46:57SPEAKER_05: Oh, wait, turns out the other coordinator stinks, or is it really just you that stinks?
- 47:02SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, so that's that's kind of what you're gonna have to come to.
- 47:06SPEAKER_05: I think uh you brought it up pre-pod, and and we've seen this from rambling and tortillas and takes, where uh almost worst case scenario here is going six and six and and just maintaining this mediocrity, which uh you know, I I think at this point with me, if we do finish six and six and make a crappy bowl game, I still think you let go of Matt Wells.
- 47:27SPEAKER_05: I still like yeah, because it's I mean, the what if he continues this trend, like what he's going on with just getting absolutely demolished by these teams that should not be demolishing us.
- 47:39SPEAKER_05: The talent level is still there on this team, the talent is there on the on the defense.
- 47:44SPEAKER_05: It's been scheme, it's been uh not getting these guys prepared, it's been a lot of the coaching.
- 47:49SPEAKER_05: I mean, and so uh that that in that aspect, my mentality has changed at as we've now seen two complete blowouts from two fellow Texas schools.
- 48:01SPEAKER_05: Um, and it's yeah, that uh that's kind of where I'm at right now, man.
- 48:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm I'm mostly with you.
- 48:07SPEAKER_04: The six and six really does seem like the nightmare scenario, uh, because it's it's for Kirby Hoke, which is the right decision, you know.
- 48:15SPEAKER_04: Yes, it is a step forward, but there's just been hardly any signs that this program has actually progressed since the last administration, you know.
- 48:25SPEAKER_04: So it's really hard to to make that call.
- 48:28SPEAKER_04: I think if you do make this bowl game at six and six, and he wins said bowl game, I think you give him one more year, one more.
- 48:35SPEAKER_04: And if he if he can't do any better than that, then yeah, you move on.
- 48:39SPEAKER_04: Um, because like what you we already brought it up, but what scares me most is we have great young guys, we have really fun transfers, really fun, fun guys that we can look look forward to seeing on our field, but they just need time to develop because they're 18 years old.
- 48:52SPEAKER_04: So I want to I want to see if we keep Matt Wells, we probably keep our whole team and probably get some more transfers since he's been so good at that.
- 48:59SPEAKER_04: I do want to see that.
- 49:00SPEAKER_04: But if he loses a bad bowl game to freaking like South Alabama or something like that, then no, we we gotta we gotta cut bait and move on.
- 49:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean that's uh like I his recruiting is the only thing that's been a positive for him.
- 49:14SPEAKER_05: The the fact and it won't show on the rankings because he gets so many transfers, and those don't count towards the rankings.
- 49:19SPEAKER_05: That's something people need to understand as well.
- 49:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, it'll say we're ninth in the conference in recruiting, but we've been getting all these transfers.
- 49:28SPEAKER_05: I mean, we've been utilizing the transfer portal more so than a lot of other teams in the nation right now.
- 49:33SPEAKER_05: So that's what leads to that.
- 49:34SPEAKER_05: But also, he is getting good freshmen.
- 49:36SPEAKER_05: I mean, Cameron Valdez is a four-star, Barron Morton's a four-star, Durant Bradley's a four-star.
- 49:41SPEAKER_05: Like, he's getting players to Lubbock even after these horrible seasons.
- 49:45SPEAKER_05: I mean, that takes talent to convince these guys to come up here in a program that hasn't really been relevant in 10 years, you know.
- 49:55SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 49:55SPEAKER_04: That that, like I said, that's the only reason why I say you keep him uh after seven wins or uh with with or without a bowl game.
- 50:03SPEAKER_04: So it and it's so disappointing because we were going into this plot this year saying that you know eight wins would be awesome, and seven's kind of the expectation.
- 50:11SPEAKER_04: And now we we're just right back to an all all too familiar feeling as a tech fan that we're just so sick and tired of feeling.
- 50:18SPEAKER_04: It's been this like this for 10 years, you know.
- 50:21SPEAKER_04: I can't believe the best year we can look back on as us you and me as like real tech fans is the seven win year with Cliff and the the lost tail see in the bowl.
- 50:30SPEAKER_04: Um, and I'm just I'm just ready for something to I I've always said I'm just ready to be decent, I'm just ready to be average for once, you know.
- 50:39SPEAKER_04: But uh it's I just uh just I'm ready to get out of this, man.
- 50:43SPEAKER_04: I I hope Matt Wells can do it because there's still plenty of season left, but it just there's not a whole lot there to believe that it's gonna happen, unfortunately.
- 50:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 50:51SPEAKER_05: And I I do hope it turns around.
- 50:53SPEAKER_05: I do.
- 50:53SPEAKER_05: I hope he I hope he goes and demolishes Kansas and potentially wins uh upset against OU in Iowa State, and you know, we finish off friggin' seven wins and and a strong bowl win, you know.
- 51:05SPEAKER_05: I hope that happens, but right now all implications are pointing the opposite direction from that.
- 51:10SPEAKER_05: So I don't know, man.
- 51:11SPEAKER_05: We'll see what happens.
- 51:12SPEAKER_05: Uh we're gonna we're always gonna keep our guns up and we're always gonna be rooting for Texas Tech, we're never rooting for losses here, uh, just to get Matt Wells out of the program.
- 51:20SPEAKER_05: We're never gonna do that, but uh yeah, we we have to see some real change and some real change real quick.
- 51:26SPEAKER_05: Guns up, the guns stay reluctantly up, uh that's for sure.
- 51:31SPEAKER_05: Yes, absolutely.
- 51:32SPEAKER_05: I want to see an absolute demolishing of the job and make it close.
- 51:37SPEAKER_05: Yes, that's what I want to see, and so we'll hope it happens.
- 51:40SPEAKER_05: Uh I you got a score prediction.
- 51:44SPEAKER_04: No, no, I don't, but uh no, I I don't.
- 51:47SPEAKER_04: I'd say I don't think I have the energy, but uh I'll say let's go 36 to 7.
- 51:54SPEAKER_05: All right, all right, defense, let's go defense, let's go.
- 51:58SPEAKER_05: It turns around.
- 52:00SPEAKER_05: Oh, let's hope.
- 52:01SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna probably I'm just gonna say I'm gonna say 50.
- 52:05SPEAKER_05: No, I'm not gonna say that.
- 52:07SPEAKER_05: Not 50.
- 52:08SPEAKER_05: Uh 40, 41, no, 42 to 21 is what I'm gonna say.
- 52:15SPEAKER_05: And that's enough of a beat down to you know, try to get me back into it.
- 52:19SPEAKER_05: But uh, you know, so let's reel us in with a dub.
- 52:23SPEAKER_04: We're gonna get down.
- 52:24SPEAKER_04: All right, K State.
- 52:25SPEAKER_04: Let's go.
- 52:26SPEAKER_05: I know our mood changes just like that every single week.
- 52:30SPEAKER_05: But uh, yeah, let's just try to get a dub here.
- 52:32SPEAKER_05: But um, that's it.
- 52:33SPEAKER_05: That's all I had for Kansas.
- 52:34SPEAKER_05: You got anything else?
- 52:36SPEAKER_04: I I don't.
- 52:36SPEAKER_04: He just it better be a dang beat down.
- 52:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, let's hope for it.
- 52:40SPEAKER_05: So let's end her off.
- 52:41SPEAKER_05: Let's end off this podcast with our song of the week, like we do every week.
- 52:45SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what is your song of the week?
- 52:48SPEAKER_04: I'm keeping a little positivity.
- 52:50SPEAKER_04: I want to feel a little happier than we do.
- 52:52SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna do one of my favorite non-country songs of all time with Maroon Fives Sunday morning.
- 52:59unknown: Sunday morning, rain is falling.
- 53:04SPEAKER_06: Still some cover share, some skin.
- 53:12SPEAKER_06: Some forget the bow, you twist the fit the moment I am in.
- 53:18SPEAKER_04: All right, everyone feels better now, don't they?
- 53:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's a classic, dude.
- 53:24SPEAKER_05: So uh that whole album, uh, Songs About Jane is a absolute classic.
- 53:29SPEAKER_05: Uh Maroon Five has not made anything to top that uh since then.
- 53:34SPEAKER_05: And you know, that's I mean, they're there that one's awesome.
- 53:36SPEAKER_05: That one's fantastic.
- 53:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 53:39SPEAKER_04: That that's one of the greatest debut albums I've ever seen.
- 53:42SPEAKER_04: Uh, they haven't even come close since then.
- 53:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 53:45SPEAKER_05: They've just gotten more and more poppy.
- 53:47SPEAKER_05: This one's kind of more of a soft rock type of vibe to it.
- 53:50SPEAKER_05: But yeah, if you don't know Sunday morning by Maroon Five, uh go listen to it right now because it's fantastic.
- 53:55SPEAKER_04: What do you got for us, man?
- 53:57SPEAKER_05: I got uh a little different from Maroon Five.
- 54:00SPEAKER_05: Um, my song of the week is scenario by Tribe Called Quest.
- 54:03SPEAKER_05: I have been uh I've been listening to a lot of Tribe lately, uh, just old school rap, old school hip-hop.
- 54:08SPEAKER_05: Uh, and and this is a great one.
- 54:10SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, scenario.
- 54:12SPEAKER_05: I thought I want to see a little better scenario come from Texas Tech Football here next week, and hopefully not something where I'm just sorely disappointed and upset, but a scenario where I am extremely happy and right back on the Wells Wagon.
- 54:26SPEAKER_05: So uh let's let's get it going, guys.
- 54:28SPEAKER_05: That's my song of the week scenario by Tribe Call Quest.
- 54:31unknown: Here we go, yo, here we go, yo.
- 54:33SPEAKER_01: So what's so on the what's the scenario?
- 54:36SPEAKER_01: Here we go, yo, here we go, yo.
- 54:38SPEAKER_01: So what's so what's the what's the scenario?
- 54:45SPEAKER_04: I like I like that.
- 54:46SPEAKER_04: I I like that mindset there.
- 54:49SPEAKER_04: I think it's one of the few that we've ever done where one of us didn't pick a country song.
- 54:53SPEAKER_04: So that's it's got a weird blend to this.
- 54:55SPEAKER_04: We gotta change it up.
- 54:56SPEAKER_04: That's why this this the season needs a change.
- 54:59SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 55:00SPEAKER_04: No more country, it's been on the country picks, it has to be as fans.
- 55:05SPEAKER_04: Their wins and losses are on us, so it's what we do as individuals.
- 55:09SPEAKER_05: We know that Matt Wells listens to the Talk and Tech podcast and realizes that hey, they played another country song.
- 55:14SPEAKER_05: I have to be disappointing this week.
- 55:16SPEAKER_05: Like, he's just not a big country music fan.
- 55:18SPEAKER_05: We get it, Matt.
- 55:21SPEAKER_04: All right, man.
- 55:22SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm looking forward to throwing that on the list.
- 55:24SPEAKER_04: I haven't heard that one either.
- 55:25SPEAKER_04: So let's hopefully let's see some different results all together, then.
- 55:29SPEAKER_05: Yes, absolutely.
- 55:30SPEAKER_05: So uh stay in it, Texas Tech fans.
- 55:32SPEAKER_05: I know uh this football season has been disappointing to start off.
- 55:36SPEAKER_05: Uh, we are not so far away from from basketball.
- 55:40SPEAKER_05: Keep that in mind as well.
- 55:41SPEAKER_05: Uh, but also, you know, stay in it, keep supporting the program, keep supporting these players because you know they are representing the double T, uh, you know, playing playing with it on their chest.
- 55:50SPEAKER_05: So uh let's let's go and finish this season off strong.
- 55:54SPEAKER_05: Uh and if we don't, we'll have to make some changes.
- 55:56SPEAKER_05: And we all realize that.
- 55:57SPEAKER_05: So, but we're gonna end it off like we always do, uh, with some plugs.
