- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is the start of another
- 0:16week. It's Monday, It's the 21st of
- 0:19July. Boy, here we are in July and
- 0:23Gee, I remember last week complaining about the cold and
- 0:25here I am sitting in glorious winter sunshine, streaming in
- 0:29through the window. Which means today the biggest
- 0:32challenge will be not keeping warm, but staying awake.
- 0:36You know how that works. Well, friends, today we are
- 0:39going to be opening back up the book of Deuteronomy as we
- 0:43continue reading through this expose of what it looks like to
- 0:47live as God's people under this new covenant that God has set up
- 0:50with them. And today we continue through
- 0:54the section about human dignity as Moses unpacks not just not
- 0:58murdering each other, but how do we live upholding the dignity of
- 1:02the other as he unpacks the 6th Commandment.
- 1:06You shall not murder. So having said that, let us dive
- 1:11back in and continue reading together.
- 1:13Deuteronomy chapter 21. When you are in the land the
- 1:28Lord your God is giving you, someone may be found murdered in
- 1:31a field and you don't know who committed the murder.
- 1:35In such a case, your elders and judges must measure the distance
- 1:39from the site of the crime to the nearby towns.
- 1:43When the nearest town has been determined, that town's elders
- 1:47must select from the herd A heifer that has never been
- 1:50trained or yoked to a plough. They must lead it down to a
- 1:55valley that has not been ploughed or planted and that has
- 1:58a stream running through it. There in the valley, they must
- 2:02break the heifer's neck. Then the Levitical priests must
- 2:06step forward, for the Lord your God has chosen them to minister
- 2:10before him and to pronounce blessings in the Lord's name.
- 2:14They are to decide all legal and criminal cases.
- 2:19The elders of the town must wash their hands over the heifer
- 2:22whose neck was broken. Then they must say, Our hands
- 2:26did not shed this person's blood, nor did we see it happen.
- 2:31O Lord, forgive your people Israel, whom you have redeemed.
- 2:35Do not charge your people with the guilt of murdering an
- 2:38innocent person. Then they will be absolved of
- 2:42the guilt of this person's blood.
- 2:44By following these instructions, you will do what is right in the
- 2:48Lord's sight and will cleanse the guilt of murder from your
- 2:51community. Suppose you go out to war
- 2:56against your enemies, and the Lord your God hands them over to
- 2:59you, and you take some of them as captives.
- 3:03And suppose you see among the captives a beautiful woman, and
- 3:06you are attracted to her and want to marry her.
- 3:10If this happens, you may take her to your home where she must
- 3:13shave her head, cut her nails, and change the clothes she was
- 3:17wearing when she was captured. She will stay in your home, but
- 3:21let her mourn for her father and her mother for a full month.
- 3:26Then you may marry her, and you will be her husband, and she
- 3:30will be your wife. But if you marry her and she
- 3:33does not please you, you must not let her go free.
- 3:36You must not sell her or treat her as a slave, for you have
- 3:40humiliated her. Suppose a man has two wives, but
- 3:47he loves one and not the other, and both have given him sons,
- 3:51And suppose the first born son is the son of the wife he does
- 3:54not love. When the man divides his
- 3:57inheritance, he may not give the larger inheritance to his
- 4:01younger son, the son of the wife he loves, as if he were the
- 4:04first born son. He must recognise the rights of
- 4:08the oldest son, the son of the wife he does not love, by giving
- 4:11him a double portion. He is the first son of his
- 4:15father's virility, and the rights of the first born belong
- 4:18to him. Suppose a man has a stubborn and
- 4:24rebellious son who will not obey his father or mother even though
- 4:28they discipline him. In such a case, the father and
- 4:32mother must take the son to the elders as they hold court at the
- 4:35town gate. The parents must say to the
- 4:38elders, This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious and
- 4:42refuses to obey. He is a glutton and a drunkard.
- 4:47Then all the men of his town must stone him to death.
- 4:51In this way you will purge this evil from among you, and all
- 4:56Israel will hear about it and be afraid.
- 5:01If someone has committed a crime worthy of death and is executed
- 5:05and hung on a tree, the body must not remain hanging from the
- 5:09tree overnight. You must bury the body that same
- 5:12day, for anyone who is hung is cursed in the sight of God.
- 5:17In this way you will prevent the defilement of the land the Lord
- 5:21your God is giving you as your special possession.
- 5:35We thank you, Lord, that you have given us life and that life
- 5:39is not some vagary to be handed around, but life is this
- 5:43precious, precious force that you have placed inside of our
- 5:47beings. Thank you for life and this
- 5:51preciousness of life that we see reflected in these laws that you
- 5:55pass down through Moses. Laws that to us sound strange as
- 5:59our modern ears hear these words.
- 6:00But to have dignity and rights handed to a woman captured by
- 6:07her enemies, what a game changer this would have been to that
- 6:11society. And to have the rights of an
- 6:14unloved son guaranteed so that he could not be cast out and
- 6:19looked over. What a revolutionary idea at
- 6:23that time and that a whole community would not be held to
- 6:27ransom over a death that could not be solved.
- 6:30Our Lord, thank you that written into the DNA of this covenant of
- 6:34these laws passed down at that time was the fact that life is
- 6:38precious and your people are precious.
- 6:41In fact, all people are precious.
- 6:44And so you found this way to protect people and their rights
- 6:48and their dignity. Lord, give us that lens to see
- 6:53beauty and dignity in the life of every other so that we can
- 6:58care and love in the way that you do.
- 7:01I thank You that Your care and your love comes to us first
- 7:05before we even deserve it. You are so good to us and we
- 7:10love you and we thank you. And we pray all of this in that
- 7:14precious name of Jesus, Amen.
