Speaker 1: Palanquin bearers. Lightly, O, lightly, we bear her along. She
• 0:05
Speaker 1: sways like a flower in the wind of our song.
• 0:08
Speaker 1: She skims like a bird on the foam of a string.
• 0:10
Speaker 1: She floats like a laugh from the lips of a dream. Gaily, O, gaily,
• 0:15
Speaker 1: we glide and we sing. We bear her along like
• 0:18
Speaker 1: a pearl on a string. Softly, Oh, softly, we bear
• 0:21
Speaker 1: her along. She hangs like a star in the dew
• 0:24
Speaker 1: of our song. She springs like a beam on the
• 0:27
Speaker 1: brow of the tide. She falls like a tear from
• 0:30
Speaker 1: the eyes of a bride. Lightly, O, lightly, we glide
• 0:34
Speaker 1: and we sing. We bear her along like a pearl
• 0:37
Speaker 1: on a string. End of Section one. Wandering singers Where
• 0:44
Speaker 1: the voice of the wind calls our wandering feet, through
• 0:47
Speaker 1: echoing forest and echoing street. With lutes in our hands,
• 0:51
Speaker 1: ever singing, we roam. All men are our kindred. The
• 0:54
Speaker 1: world is our home. Our lays are of cities whose
• 0:57
Speaker 1: luster is shed, the laughter and beauty of women long dead,
• 1:01
Speaker 1: the swords of old battles, the crown of old kings,
• 1:05
Speaker 1: and happy and simple and sorrowful things. What hope shall
• 1:09
Speaker 1: we gather? What dreams shall we sow? Where the wind
• 1:12
Speaker 1: calls our wandering footsteps, we go. No love bids us terry,
• 1:17
Speaker 1: No joy bids us wait. The voice of the wind
• 1:21
Speaker 1: is the voice of our fate. End of section two.
• 1:25
Speaker 1: Indian weavers Weavers weaving at break of day? Why do
• 1:29
Speaker 1: you weave a garment so gay?
• 1:32
  Speaker 2: Blue?
• 1:32
Speaker 1: Is the wing of the halcy?
• 1:33
  Speaker 3: Unwild?
• 1:34
Speaker 1: We weave the robes of a new born child. Weavers
• 1:38
Speaker 1: weaving at fall of night? Why do you weave a
• 1:41
Speaker 1: garment so bright like the plumes of a peacock? Purple
• 1:44
Speaker 1: and green? We weave the marriage veils of a queen?
• 1:48
Speaker 1: Weavers weaving solemn and still? Why do you weave in
• 1:52
Speaker 1: the moonlight chill, white as a feather and white as
• 1:56
Speaker 1: a cloud? We weave a dead man's funeral shroud? End
• 2:01
Speaker 1: of section three. Cormorandel Fishers Rise, brothers, Rise the wakening skies,
• 2:08
Speaker 1: pray to the morning light. The wind lies asleep in
• 2:11
Speaker 1: the arms of the dawn like a child that has
• 2:13
Speaker 1: cried all night. Come. Let us gather our nets from
• 2:16
Speaker 1: the shore and set our catamarans free to capture the
• 2:20
Speaker 1: leaping wealth of the tide. For we are sons of
• 2:23
Speaker 1: the sea. No longer delay. Let us hasten away in
• 2:26
Speaker 1: the track of the sea gulls call. The sea is
• 2:29
Speaker 1: our mother, the cloud is our brother, The waves are
• 2:31
Speaker 1: our comrades. All what though we toss at the fall
• 2:34
Speaker 1: of the sun, where the hand of the sea god drives,
• 2:38
Speaker 1: he who holds the storm by the hair will hide
• 2:41
Speaker 1: in his breast our lives. Sweet is the shade of
• 2:45
Speaker 1: the cocoanut glade, and the scent of the mango grove.
• 2:48
Speaker 1: And sweet are the sands at the full oh moon,
• 2:51
Speaker 1: with the sounds of the voices we love, but sweeter,
• 2:54
Speaker 1: o brothers, the kiss of the spray, and the dance
• 2:56
Speaker 1: of the wild foam's glee. Row, brothers, Row to the
• 3:00
Speaker 1: blue of the verge, where the low sky mates with
• 3:03
Speaker 1: the sea. End of section four. The snake charmer, whither
• 3:08
Speaker 1: dost thou hide from the magic of my flute call?
• 3:11
Speaker 1: And what moonlight tangled meshes of perfume, or the clustering
• 3:15
Speaker 1: kiovas guard the squirrel's slumber where the deep woods glimmer
• 3:19
Speaker 1: with the jasmin's balloom. I'll feed thee, O beloved, on
• 3:23
Speaker 1: milk and wild red honey. I'll bear thee in a
• 3:26
Speaker 1: basket of rushes, green and white, to a palace bower
• 3:29
Speaker 1: where golden vested maidens thread with mellow laughter, the petals
• 3:33
Speaker 1: of delight. Whither dost thou loiter by what murmuring hollows
• 3:39
Speaker 1: where oleanders scatter their ambrosial fire. Come thou, subtle bride
• 3:43
Speaker 1: of my mollfluous wooing, Come thou silver breasted moonbeam of desire.
• 3:50
Speaker 1: End of section five corn grinders, O, little mouse, Why
• 3:55
Speaker 1: dost thou cry while merry stars laugh in the sky?
• 3:59
Speaker 1: Alas Alas my lord is dead, Ah, who will ease
• 4:02
Speaker 1: my bitter pain? He went to seek a millet grain
• 4:06
Speaker 1: in the rich farmer's granary shed. They caught him in
• 4:09
Speaker 1: a bated snare and slew my lover unaware. Alas Alas
• 4:14
Speaker 1: my lord is dead, A little dear, Why dost thou
• 4:18
Speaker 1: moan hid in the forest bower alone? Alas Alas my
• 4:22
Speaker 1: lord is dead, Ah who will quiet my lament? At
• 4:27
Speaker 1: fall of even tide, he went to drink beside the
• 4:30
Speaker 1: river head. A waiting hunter threw his dart and struck
• 4:34
Speaker 1: my lover through the heart. Alas Alas my lord is dead,
• 4:39
Speaker 1: A little bride, While dost thou weep with all the
• 4:42
Speaker 1: happy world asleep? Alas Alas my lord is dead, Ah,
• 4:47
Speaker 1: who will stay these hungry tears, or still the want
• 4:51
Speaker 1: of famish'd years and crown with love my marriage, bed
• 4:55
Speaker 1: my soul burns with a quenchless fire that lit my
• 4:59
Speaker 1: lover's funeral Higher alas alas my lord is dead. End
• 5:05
  Speaker 1: of section six.
• 5:07
Speaker 3: Village song. Honey child, honey child, whither are you going?
• 5:13
Speaker 3: Would you cast your jewels all to the breeze is blowing?
• 5:18
Speaker 3: Would you leave the mother who on golden grain has
• 5:21
Speaker 3: fed you? Would you grieve the lover who is riding
• 5:25
Speaker 3: forth to wed you mother mine, to the wild forest.
• 5:30
Speaker 3: I am going where upon the chumper boughs, the chumpa
• 5:34
Speaker 3: buds are blowing, to the coil haunted river isles, where
• 5:38
Speaker 3: lotus lilies glisten. The voices of the fairy folk are
• 5:42
Speaker 3: calling me. Oh, listen, honey child, honey child. The world
• 5:47
Speaker 3: is full of pleasure, of bridal songs and cradle songs
• 5:52
Speaker 3: and sandal scented leisure. Your bridal robes are in the looms,
• 5:57
Speaker 3: silver and saffron glowing. Your bridal cakes are on the hearth. Oh,
• 6:02
Speaker 3: whither are you going? The bridal songs and cradle songs
• 6:07
Speaker 3: have cadences of sorrow. The laughter of the sun today,
• 6:12
Speaker 3: the wind of death tomorrow, far sweeter sound the forest
• 6:18
Speaker 3: notes where forest streams are falling, O, mother mine, I
• 6:23
Speaker 3: cannot stay. The fairy folk are calling. End of section seven.
• 6:31
Speaker 3: In praise of Hennah. A coquilla called from a Hennah spray,
• 6:39
Speaker 3: Lira lirie lirah lyrie, hasten maidens, hasten away to gather
• 6:46
Speaker 3: the leaves of the Hennah tree. Send your pictures afloat
• 6:51
Speaker 3: on the tide. Gather the leaves as the dawn be old,
• 6:56
Speaker 3: grind them in mortars of amber and gold, the fresh
• 7:00
Speaker 3: green leaves of the Henna tree. A cochilla called from
• 7:06
Speaker 3: a Henna spray, Lirah lirie lirah lerie. Hasten maidens, hasten
• 7:13
Speaker 3: away to gather the leaves of the Henna tree. The
• 7:18
Speaker 3: tilcas red for the brow of a bride and beetlenuts,
• 7:22
Speaker 3: red for lips that are sweet, but for lily like
• 7:27
Speaker 3: fingers and feet, the red the red of the Henna tree.
• 7:34
Speaker 3: End of section eight. Harvest him men's voices, Lord of
• 7:41
Speaker 3: the lotus, Lord of the harvest, bright and munificent, Lord

• 10:05
Speaker 3: She like a serpent, to the calling voice of flutes,
• 10:11
Speaker 3: glides my heart into thy fingers, Oh my love, where
• 10:18
Speaker 3: the night wind, like a lover, leans above his jasmine
• 10:24
Speaker 3: gardens and siri shah bowers, and on right boughs of
• 10:30
Speaker 3: many colored fruits, bright parrots cluster like vermilion flowers. He,
• 10:41
Speaker 3: like the perfume in the petals of a rose, hides
• 10:46
Speaker 3: thy heart within my bosom, Oh my love, like a garland,
• 10:53
Speaker 3: like a jewel, like a dove that hangs its nest
• 10:58
Speaker 3: in the Ashoka tree. Lie still, O Love, until the
• 11:03
Speaker 3: morning sows her tents of gold on fields of ivory.
• 11:11
Speaker 3: End of section ten. Cradle Song from groves of spice
• 11:19
Speaker 3: o'er fields of rice, athwart the lotus stream. I bring
• 11:25
Speaker 3: for you a glint with dew, a little lovely dream.
• 11:30
Speaker 3: Sweet shut your eyes. The wild fire flies dance through
• 11:36
Speaker 3: the fairy neme from the poppy bowl. For you, I
• 11:40
Speaker 3: stole a little lovely dream, dear eyes, good night in
• 11:46
Speaker 3: golden light. The stars around you gleam on you. I
• 11:51
Speaker 3: press with soft caress a little lovely dream. End of
• 11:58
Speaker 3: section eleven. South thee lamp of my life. The lips
• 12:04
Speaker 3: of death hath blown thee out with their sudden breath.
• 12:09
Speaker 3: Naught shall revive thy vanish'd spark. Love must I dwell
• 12:15
Speaker 3: in the living dark tree of my life. Death's cruel
• 12:20
Speaker 3: foot hath crush'd thee down to thy hidden root. Nought
• 12:25
Speaker 3: shall restore thy glory fled? Shall the blossom live when
• 12:30
Speaker 3: the tree is dead? Life of my life, Death's bitter
• 12:35
Speaker 3: sword hath sever'd us like a broken word, rent us
• 12:40
Speaker 3: in twain, who are but one? Shall the flesh survive
• 12:44
Speaker 3: when the soul is gone? End of section twelve. Song
• 12:51
Speaker 3: of a Dream. Once in the dream of a night
• 12:57
Speaker 3: I stood lone in the life of a magical wood,
• 13:02
Speaker 3: sole deep in visions, that poppy like sprang, and spirits
• 13:06
Speaker 3: of truth were the birds that sang, And spirits of
• 13:10
Speaker 3: love were the stars that glowed, And spirits of peace
• 13:15
Speaker 3: were the streams that flowed in that magical wood in
• 13:19
Speaker 3: the land of sleep. Lone in the light of that
• 13:24
Speaker 3: magical grove, I felt the stars of the spirits of
• 13:28
Speaker 3: love gather and gleam round my delicate youth, and I
• 13:32
Speaker 3: heard the song of the spirits of truth to quench
• 13:36
Speaker 3: my longing, I bent me low by the streams of
• 13:40
Speaker 3: the spirits of peace that flow in that magical wood
• 13:44
Speaker 3: in the land of sleep. End of Section thirteen. Whomayun
• 13:51
Speaker 3: to Zebeha from the Urdu. You flaunt your beauty in
• 13:57
Speaker 3: the rose, your glory in the dawn, your sweetness in
• 14:02
Speaker 3: the nightingale, your whiteness in the swan. You haunt my
• 14:07
Speaker 3: waking like a dream, my slumber like a moon, pervade
• 14:12
Speaker 3: me like a musky scent, Possess me like a tune.
• 14:17
Speaker 3: Yet when I crave of you, my sweet one, tender
• 14:21
Speaker 3: moment's grace, you cry. I sit behind the veil. I
• 14:26
Speaker 3: cannot show my face. Shall any foolish veil, divide my
• 14:32
Speaker 3: longing from my bliss. Shall any fragile curtain hide your
• 14:36
Speaker 3: beauty from my kiss? What war is this? Of thee
• 14:41
Speaker 3: and me? Give all the wanton strife. You are the
• 14:45
Speaker 3: heart within my heart, the life within my life. End
• 14:52
Speaker 3: of section fourteen. Autumn Song, like a joy on the
• 14:59
Speaker 3: heart of a sorrow. The sunset hangs on a cloud,
• 15:04
Speaker 3: a golden storm of glittering sheaves of fair and frail
• 15:08
Speaker 3: and fluttering leaves. The wild wind blows in a cloud,
• 15:14
Speaker 3: hark to a voice that is calling to my heart.
• 15:18
Speaker 3: In the voice of the wind. My heart is weary
• 15:21
Speaker 3: and sad and alone for its dreams, like the fluttering
• 15:26
Speaker 3: leaves have gone, and why should I stay behind? End
• 15:32
  Speaker 3: of section fifteen.
• 15:34
Speaker 2: Alabaster Like this alabaster box, whose art is frail as
• 15:40
Speaker 2: a casher flower, is my heart, carbon with delicate dreams,
• 15:46
Speaker 2: and wrought with many a subtle and exquisite thought. Therein
• 15:52
Speaker 2: I treasure the spice and scent of rich and passionate memories,
• 15:58
Speaker 2: blent like odors of cinnamon, sandal and clove, of song
• 16:03
Speaker 2: and sorrow and life and love. End of section sixteen.
• 16:10
Speaker 2: Ecstasy Cover mine eyes, Oh my love, Mine eyes that
• 16:17
Speaker 2: are weary of bliss, as of light that is poignant
• 16:21
Speaker 2: and strong. How silence my lips with a kiss, my
• 16:26
Speaker 2: lips that are weary of song. Shelter my soul, Oh,
• 16:31
Speaker 2: my love, My soul is bent low with the pain
• 16:35
Speaker 2: and the burden of love, like the grace of a
• 16:37
Speaker 2: flower that is smitten with rain. Oh, shelter my soul
• 16:42
Speaker 2: from thy face. End of Section seventeen, to my very fancies, nay,
• 16:51
Speaker 2: no longer I may hold.
• 16:52
Speaker 1: You in my palin quin bearers. Lightly, oh lightly, we
• 16:57
Speaker 1: bear her along. She sways like a flower in wind
• 17:00
Speaker 1: of our song. She skims like a bird on the
• 17:02
Speaker 1: foam of a string. She floats like a laugh from
• 17:05
Speaker 1: the lips of a dream. Gaily, Oh, gaily, we glight
• 17:09
Speaker 1: and we sing. We bear her along like a pearl
• 17:12
Speaker 1: on a string. Softly, Oh, softly, we bear her along.
• 17:16
Speaker 1: She hangs like a star in the dew of our song.
• 17:19
Speaker 1: She springs like a beam on the brow of the tide.
• 17:22
Speaker 1: She falls like a tear from the eyes of a bride. Lightly,
• 17:26
Speaker 1: oh lightly, we glide and we sing. We bear her
• 17:29
Speaker 1: along like a pearl on a string. End of Section one.
• 17:34
Speaker 2: Spirit soft caresses nor like lotus leaves enfold you in
• 17:39
Speaker 2: the tangles of my tresses. Very fancies fly away to
• 17:43
Speaker 2: the white cloud wildernesses fly away. Nay, no longer you
• 17:49
Speaker 2: may linger with your laughter lighted faces. Now I am
• 17:53
Speaker 2: a thought worn singer in life's high and lonely places.
• 17:57
Speaker 2: Very fancies fly away to right wind in woven spaces,
• 18:02
Speaker 2: fly away. End of Section.
• 18:05
Speaker 4: Eighteen, presented at the Ramzandhrbar. Deign Prince, my tribute to
• 18:12
Speaker 4: receive this lyric offering to your name, who round your
• 18:17
Speaker 4: jeweled scep turbine, the lilies of a poet's fame, beneath
• 18:21
Speaker 4: whose sway concordant dwell, The peoples whom your laws embrace
• 18:26
Speaker 4: in brotherhood of diverse creeds and harmony of diverse face.
• 18:33
Speaker 4: The votaries of the prophet's faith, of whom you are
• 18:36
Speaker 4: the crowning chief, and they who bear on veaved brows
• 18:41
Speaker 4: their mystic symbols of belief. And they who worshiping the
• 18:46
Speaker 4: sun fled o'er the old Iranian sea, and they who
• 18:51
Speaker 4: bow to him who trod the midnight waves of galilee,
• 18:56
Speaker 4: sweet sumptuous fables of Baghdad. The splendors of your court
• 19:01
Speaker 4: recall the tortures of a thousand knights blaze through a
• 19:05
Speaker 4: single festival, and saki singers down the streets pour for
• 19:10
Speaker 4: us in a stream divine, from goblets of your love
• 19:14
Speaker 4: guzzles the rapture of your Sufi wine, Prince, where your
• 19:20
Speaker 4: radiant cities smile, grim hills their somber vigils. Keep your
• 19:26
Speaker 4: ancient forests hoard and hold the legends of their centuried sleep.
• 19:32
Speaker 4: Your birds of peace, white, pinioned, float over ruined, fort
• 19:37
Speaker 4: and storied. Plain your faithfuls towards sleepless God, the harvests
• 19:43
Speaker 4: of your gold and grain. God give you joy. God
• 19:48
Speaker 4: give you grace to shield the truth, in smite the wrong,
• 19:52
Speaker 4: to honor virtue, valor worths, to cherish faith in fastest song,
• 20:00
Speaker 4: Luster of your days, outshine the deeds FIDUSI sung your
• 20:05
Speaker 4: name within a nation's prayer, your music on a nation's tongue.
• 20:14
Speaker 4: End of Section nineteen. Lately the serpents are asleep among
• 20:20
Speaker 4: the poppies. The fireflies light the soundless panther's way to
• 20:25
Speaker 4: tangled parts where shy gazas are straying, and parrot plumes
• 20:29
Speaker 4: outshine the dying day. Oh soft the lotus buds upon
• 20:34
Speaker 4: the stream are stirring like sweet maidens when they dream
• 20:40
Speaker 4: a caste mark on the azure brows of heaven. The
• 20:43
Speaker 4: golden moon burns sacred, solemn bright. The winds are dancing
• 20:49
Speaker 4: in the forest, temper and swooning at the holy feet
• 20:53
Speaker 4: of night. Hush in the silence, mystic voices sing, and
• 20:59
Speaker 4: make the gods their incense offering.
• 21:05
Speaker 5: End of Section twenty.
• 21:07
Speaker 2: In the forest, here, o, my heart, let us burn
• 21:12
Speaker 2: the dear dreams that are dead. Here in this wood,
• 21:17
Speaker 2: let us fashion a funeral fire of fallen white petals
• 21:21
Speaker 2: and leaves that are mellow and red. Here, let us
• 21:25
Speaker 2: burn them in noon's flaming torches of fire. We are weary,
• 21:30
Speaker 2: my heart. We are weary, so long we have borne
• 21:34
Speaker 2: the heavy love burden of dreams that are dead. Let
• 21:38
Speaker 2: us rest, Let us scatter their ashes away for a while,
• 21:43
Speaker 2: let us mourn. We will rest, oh, my heart, till
• 21:47
Speaker 2: the shadows are gray in the west. But soon we
• 21:51
Speaker 2: must rise, oh my heart, we must wander again into
• 21:56
Speaker 2: the war of the world and the strife of the throng.
• 21:59
Speaker 2: Let us rise, o, my heart, Let us gather the
• 22:02
Speaker 2: dreams that remain. We will conquer the sorrow of life
• 22:07
Speaker 2: with the sorrow of song. End of Section twenty one.
• 22:12
Speaker 2: Past and future. The new hath come, and now the
• 22:17
Speaker 2: old retires, and so the past becomes a mountain cell
• 22:22
Speaker 2: where lone apart, older memories dwell in consecrated calm, forgotten
• 22:29
Speaker 2: yet of the keen heart that hastens to forget old
• 22:33
Speaker 2: longings in fulfilling new desires. And now the soul stands
• 22:38
