- 0:20Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted Coming up, We'll take a Walk in the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Woods with screen icon Robert Redford with Cinephile and sixty
- 0:26Speaker 1: A towering hockey great the Hall of Famer Chris Pronger
- 0:29Speaker 1: reflecting on his mean streets on the ice and count
- 0:31Speaker 1: me as a Bernie bro saying farewell to one of
- 0:34Speaker 1: the greatest goalies of all time, Bernie paruh JD. We're
- 0:37Speaker 1: back here unscripted and you intaligating a little team bonding
- 0:40Speaker 1: it tell us about that.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I got it. I had to size him up,
- 0:44Speaker 2: just like I did you. I had to see his height.
- 0:47Speaker 2: It is confirmed. You are the smallest member of the
- 0:49Speaker 2: unscripted team at.
- 0:50Speaker 1: N five A.
- 0:52Speaker 2: How big is tal I don't think I tell you
- 0:54Speaker 2: what tal is. Tow projects a masculinity. Some would say toxic,
- 1:01Speaker 2: but I like that toxic, but I like that kind
- 1:04Speaker 2: of masculinely. He walked into there and I said, who
- 1:07Speaker 2: the fuck is that? It's a lot the headphones on.
- 1:13Speaker 2: He was. We had a good little chat. We talked
- 1:15Speaker 2: uh and my wife was there too. We're in town
- 1:18Speaker 2: visiting and it's nice. It's nice to kind of you know,
- 1:21Speaker 2: it's amazing when you do over We've done over fifty
- 1:23Speaker 2: shows I think now, and you're eight for Oh, I
- 1:27Speaker 2: like to say overfit, don't well, who's listening, because then
- 1:30Speaker 2: the fans go, oh, we gotta go watch all of them.
- 1:32Speaker 2: There's so many always over sell, always over self fair enough,
- 1:36Speaker 2: but no, it's amazing to kind of just you know
- 1:38Speaker 2: you Because we're all so busy in our lives, you
- 1:41Speaker 2: don't like get to connect in person. So it's always
- 1:44Speaker 2: nice to kind of kind of talk and you guys
- 1:46Speaker 2: have you know, Towel's only seen mean emails and mean
- 1:50Speaker 2: text messages from me, and it's nice to kind of
- 1:53Speaker 2: get there, give them a hug, and you know, I
- 1:55Speaker 2: put my arm around his shoulder and and just chop
- 1:58Speaker 2: it up a little bit. So it's great.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Yeah, me and Taldo on the clock. So the next
- 2:01Speaker 1: time Towels in the East Coast, we have to go
- 2:03Speaker 1: to Hartford. Consider your love of the Whalers and my Connecticut.
- 2:06Speaker 1: We're gonna go to Pepe's in New Haven, Connecticut.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Je face. That's gonna be great, all right.
- 2:12Speaker 1: The games don't mean anything in the standings, but there's hockey, folks,
- 2:14Speaker 1: there is hockey. This year's shorter preseason schedule meets plenty
- 2:17Speaker 1: for players trying to make their respective team.
- 2:19Speaker 2: So it's early, but some exhibition game highlights.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Gabriel Landskock dropping the gloves after you to Mammoth forward
- 2:25Speaker 1: elbowed Kle mccar in the head. That was the Sam
- 2:27Speaker 1: Lipkin first overall pick. Matthew Schaeffer earning an assist in
- 2:31Speaker 1: his first game of the Islanders Sunny Milano four points
- 2:34Speaker 1: of the Caps in his first preseason action. Eighteen year
- 2:37Speaker 1: old Brady Martin scoring twice in his debut with Nashville
- 2:40Speaker 1: eighteen and the Jackie brothers Arbor and Florian scoring for
- 2:44Speaker 1: Montreal with their mom in the crowd, JD.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Which of those standing out for you so far? I
- 2:49Speaker 2: mean Florian Jackie number one. I just got to touch
- 2:52Speaker 2: on that, the Jackuye brothers because you know my dad's
- 2:55Speaker 2: he's a he's very bullish on him. I think Florian's
- 2:58Speaker 2: maybe a year away from playing, but I mean he
- 3:00Speaker 2: had twenty seven goals in the AHL and over one
- 3:03Speaker 2: hundred pen minutes. Like he's tough as nails, fought fought.
- 3:07Speaker 2: De Laurier and also scored a goal. I mean, he's
- 3:11Speaker 2: he's someone to like for Montreal. I like everything where
- 3:13Speaker 2: Montreal's going. But for me, I think, obviously Matthew Shaeffer.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I think everybody was wondering, how will this kid look?
- 3:21Speaker 2: And I mean, he's has advertised he's a smooth skating,
- 3:24Speaker 2: two way defenseman and personally, you know, some people were
- 3:29Speaker 2: talking to me about the numbers of the Calder race
- 3:32Speaker 2: and how Demodops like plus one ninety right now and
- 3:36Speaker 2: everybody else is like six to one are over, And
- 3:38Speaker 2: I'm like, I think Matthew Shaeffer is the opportunity to
- 3:41Speaker 2: kind of steal the Calder and and it's kind of
- 3:44Speaker 2: I wouldn't be surprised if he stays healthy if he
- 3:46Speaker 2: doesn't take it. You know, I think I don't know
- 3:47Speaker 2: where Demodop's going to finish with Patrick lyone there and
- 3:52Speaker 2: how much offensive opportunity is going to get once the
- 3:54Speaker 2: season starts. So but I'm I'm bullish on Matthew Shaeffer.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I love a defenseman that comes into the league young,
- 4:00Speaker 2: eighteen nine eighteen and just so calm and such a
- 4:06Speaker 2: smooth skater. I mean, that whole sequence of him just
- 4:08Speaker 2: rolling around in the ozone overtime and then chasing down
- 4:11Speaker 2: I think it was Mitchkov on the breakaway. It just
- 4:14Speaker 2: looked like he didn't break a sweat. That's just that's
- 4:17Speaker 2: just amazing stuff. And I'm sure it gets everybody in
- 4:20Speaker 2: all the Islanders fans hard as a rock.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Yeah, and the past you're talk but not getting hard
- 4:26Speaker 1: with certain things, and this issue is hard.
- 4:28Speaker 2: That is when we are getting hard, right hard.
- 4:30Speaker 1: What do you think about Landiskok dropping the gloves?
- 4:33Speaker 2: I don't love it, but I guess listen, Laniskog missed,
- 4:36Speaker 2: missed so much time. I'm sure he's so excited. And
- 4:39Speaker 2: I saw Tyson Barry, you know, fan of the show.
- 4:41Speaker 2: He posted something being like, you know, fuck around and
- 4:43Speaker 2: find out with Gabriel Lanskog. But listen, it's so polarizing
- 4:48Speaker 2: preseason because you know, you got these guys that are
- 4:51Speaker 2: trying to make the team, and and honestly, for all
- 4:53Speaker 2: the fans out there, there's maybe one to two spots
- 4:56Speaker 2: on the NHL roster. I would say one that's up
- 4:59Speaker 2: for grabs. The rest is already set in stone. So
- 5:02Speaker 2: these kids that are playing are just trying trying to
- 5:05Speaker 2: show out for either an opportunity to play in the
- 5:09Speaker 2: HL or for you know, the team to take notice
- 5:12Speaker 2: and it's nothing against them, but that leads to cheap shots,
- 5:16Speaker 2: That leads to guys getting a little bit over zealous.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And I've never it's always going to be that way.
- 5:21Speaker 2: You know, you kind of as a as a veteran,
- 5:23Speaker 2: you're you have to really once you start, you're established
- 5:27Speaker 2: in the league, you kind of got to be like,
- 5:28Speaker 2: how do I want to play this? Am I trying
- 5:30Speaker 2: to get ready? Or you know, do I have to
- 5:35Speaker 2: go hard and get ready for the season and make
- 5:37Speaker 2: sure that I'm hitting being physical like Atlantiskog fighting if
- 5:40Speaker 2: I need to. So it's tough, man and it but
- 5:43Speaker 2: it is what it is. You got these kids in
- 5:45Speaker 2: I'd like to see them maybe really sit down and
- 5:48Speaker 2: figure out this preseason thing because I think every league
- 5:51Speaker 2: struggles with it. That's in a contact sport football as well.
- 5:54Speaker 2: You know, what do you do do you have two
- 5:56Speaker 2: teams out there and you know you just have you're
- 5:59Speaker 2: only allowed to play your guys that are going to
- 6:01Speaker 2: play in season together and you know, you keep the
- 6:04Speaker 2: young kids against each other or you know, how do
- 6:06Speaker 2: you how do you how do you make it work
- 6:09Speaker 2: so we're not getting some injuries. You look at Logan
- 6:11Speaker 2: Cooley getting hit from behind and getting injured. He's day
- 6:14Speaker 2: to day. It's like, how do you limit those? I
- 6:17Speaker 2: know you can't, but like, is there a way to
- 6:19Speaker 2: maybe figure out and man something that's better and we
- 6:24Speaker 2: could guarantee guys safety, but it is a contact sport.
- 6:27Speaker 2: You can't. You can ever do that.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Yeah, for most sports, I find with training camp, preseason,
- 6:31Speaker 1: exhibition games, whatever you want to call, it's just don't
- 6:33Speaker 1: get hurt. And guys are trying to make the team
- 6:35Speaker 1: on the bubble, show up and show it. And as
- 6:37Speaker 1: you said, rookies, what can they show? What kind of promise?
- 6:39Speaker 1: That's what a noable mention Schaeffer. The other thing when
- 6:41Speaker 1: it comes to preseason, training camp, exhibition, spring training is holdouts.
- 6:45Speaker 1: You don't hear about it too much in hockey, but
- 6:47Speaker 1: there's one notable hold on a team you like a lot.
- 6:49Speaker 1: This year in the Ducks, Mason McTavish remains unsigned. He
- 6:52Speaker 1: has not appeared at the team's training camp. Twenty two
- 6:55Speaker 1: year old without a contract. Duckshi and Papferbeek called it
- 6:57Speaker 1: quote disappointing. Big summer in Anaheim. Joel Quinville's there. They
- 7:01Speaker 1: trade for Chris Quider, they signed Michael Grant, they got
- 7:03Speaker 1: plenty of cap space. How tough is this for the Ducks?
- 7:05Speaker 1: And do you think they consider trading Mason mctabash.
- 7:10Speaker 2: I find him such a you know, a foundational piece
- 7:13Speaker 2: unless you're getting something back in return that's very substantial
- 7:18Speaker 2: and is a good return, meaning, you know, getting a
- 7:22Speaker 2: young guy to come back like another prospect. I think
- 7:25Speaker 2: they're just kind of stuck between a rock and a
- 7:28Speaker 2: hard place. I've said hard way too many times today.
- 7:31Speaker 2: So this is a tough one. This is early in
- 7:33Speaker 2: the morning. But you know Pat Verbeeks kind of you know,
- 7:37Speaker 2: he's he's played these young guys tough, you know, like
- 7:39Speaker 2: he's he's not necessarily just shilling out the dough. And
- 7:44Speaker 2: I do think Mason mctaviash is worth it. I don't
- 7:46Speaker 2: know how far apart they are, but it's a deal
- 7:48Speaker 2: you want to see get done because he's such good
- 7:51Speaker 2: he's such a good forward, he's such a good piece
- 7:53Speaker 2: to this team. I know they got Lil Carlson, they
- 7:55Speaker 2: got a lot of other cutter goats, hee a lot
- 7:57Speaker 2: of big talent, So they can maybe wait without him,
- 8:00Speaker 2: but I think it's prudent. You know, if I'm Mason McTavish,
- 8:04Speaker 2: you want to play, but also you want to get
- 8:06Speaker 2: your money's worth because you see around the league all
- 8:09Speaker 2: these other young kids that have done less than him
- 8:11Speaker 2: getting more money. So for him, he's probably like, listen,
- 8:14Speaker 2: pay the piper, not Roddy Piper, maceon McTavish, baby.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Good reference and tell it. Probably the Ducks are probably
- 8:21Speaker 1: don't want a Bridge deal a McTavish.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Right, That's what the reports seem to be.
- 8:25Speaker 3: I think the issue seems to be term more so
- 8:28Speaker 3: than just money. Like the Ducks this We saw this
- 8:31Speaker 3: with trevor' segres, right, he he held out a few
- 8:34Speaker 3: years ago, and it looks like that was that was
- 8:37Speaker 3: an issue, was term.
- 8:38Speaker 2: He did not want to sign.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Long term in Anaheim and lo and behold he was
- 8:42Speaker 3: gone within a couple of years. So, uh, you know,
- 8:45Speaker 3: Mason McTavish seems to be in the same situation where
- 8:48Speaker 3: they're not. The Ducks aren't interested in like a two
- 8:50Speaker 3: to three you know, year bridge deal.
- 8:52Speaker 2: They want him long term.
- 8:53Speaker 3: They want to lock him in, you know, to see
- 8:56Speaker 3: this thing through as far as turning this team into
- 8:58Speaker 3: a contender.
- 8:59Speaker 2: And my concerns more is like even.
- 9:01Speaker 3: If they do sign him and he misses the first
- 9:03Speaker 3: week or who have camped, Like how sharp is he
- 9:05Speaker 3: going to be when he finally gets there?
- 9:07Speaker 2: Sharp is a spoon, I tell you that much. But
- 9:10Speaker 2: he's ten times better than Zegras, so can't anyway, moving.
- 9:15Speaker 1: On, there's huge news in Los Angeles. Is always on
- 9:17Speaker 1: MLB netwhere Clayton kershawt announcing he's gonna be stepping down
- 9:20Speaker 1: as a member of the Dodgers after the season, the
- 9:22Speaker 1: future Hall of Famer, and then everyone's in an up right,
- 9:24Speaker 1: so what they go, there's another la icon stepping away?
- 9:27Speaker 1: So what the are Copetar people were furious in baseball circles, Jadie,
- 9:31Speaker 1: they go, hang, have a feel. Let Kershaw have his
- 9:34Speaker 1: moment tomorrow you can announce it. But on the same
- 9:36Speaker 1: day that Clayton curs as retirement announcement comes out just
- 9:39Speaker 1: into the radar, King's captain Andre Kupetar announces this is
- 9:42Speaker 1: going to be his last season as well. Oh five
- 9:44Speaker 1: first round pick, andering his twentieth season in LA keep
- 9:48Speaker 1: part of the team's two Stanley Cups. He's first in
- 9:50Speaker 1: franchise history. By the way, in notable categories games, assists,
- 9:54Speaker 1: in game winning goals, he's twenty nine points by Marcel
- 9:57Speaker 1: Dion for the franchise points mark, which begs the question,
- 10:00Speaker 1: is Kope the King of Kings? Is he the greatest
- 10:03Speaker 1: player in franchise? Is? I say, no, marceld On the man.
- 10:06Speaker 2: But what do you think? I mean? And kupatar As you
- 10:11Speaker 2: said so elegantly, I mean, I don't know. You've got
- 10:15Speaker 2: Gretzky that you know, changed the franchise. Yeah, so it's
- 10:19Speaker 2: kind of tough to I would put him as the
- 10:21Speaker 2: greatest king, like, but I tell you what, that guy
- 10:24Speaker 2: has done some amazing things for that franchise. He's been
- 10:28Speaker 2: just the leader of the consumant leader. My question is
- 10:30Speaker 2: in your eyes MLB wise, Yeah, who do you think
- 10:34Speaker 2: retiring is a bigger deal? Clayton Kershaw or Andre copetar As.
- 10:39Speaker 2: You are somebody that lives between both worlds. You are
- 10:42Speaker 2: a cuck in MLB network and you are cocking both sides.
- 10:47Speaker 2: So for you, who do you think is like a
- 10:49Speaker 2: bigger deal in LA I know, I know both will
- 10:51Speaker 2: kind of have their arguments, but yeah, Eileen Coppatar but
- 10:55Speaker 2: I don't know what you think.
- 10:57Speaker 1: I think Kershaw obviously has been the face of the
- 11:00Speaker 1: Dodgers for a long time. He's had incredible regular season
- 11:03Speaker 1: success by the numbers, he's one of the great pitchers
- 11:05Speaker 1: of the last forty fifty years. Now the playoffs, he's
- 11:07Speaker 1: had a lot of notable failures, which is a part
- 11:09Speaker 1: of the resume, right, it's a resume and era. In
- 11:11Speaker 1: the regular seasons two and a half and the postseason's
- 11:13Speaker 1: four and a half. So Copaitar, I think, in many
- 11:15Speaker 1: ways is underappreciated, not only within his city but within
- 11:18Speaker 1: hockey circles. Like for years, if I said you filmed
- 11:20Speaker 1: the Blank j D. The most underrated player in hockey
- 11:23Speaker 1: is I think for years it was are Coptar. Within hockey,
- 11:26Speaker 1: they know how great he is, but I think the
- 11:28Speaker 1: larger world doesn't realize how great this guy's been. First
- 11:30Speaker 1: this long, like twentieth season, that duration, you know, is insane.
- 11:34Speaker 2: It's so nuts, and it's amazing the way he skates,
- 11:38Speaker 2: and you know, he was never the fastest adapted when
- 11:41Speaker 2: the game adapted. You know, I always put like I
- 11:44Speaker 2: did that century show for the NHL where you're ranking
- 11:48Speaker 2: the top hundred players and not say on Jay's in
- 11:50Speaker 2: there or or not, but you know, the way we
- 11:53Speaker 2: ranked it is like can you transcend eros in hockey?
- 11:56Speaker 2: And for me that was a big thing, Like because
- 11:58Speaker 2: hockey's ever evolving, it's ever changing. It's a copycat league,
- 12:02Speaker 2: so you have to as an athlete adapt the way
- 12:05Speaker 2: it's changing. Like you know, unless you're a guy that
- 12:08Speaker 2: is a Conor McDavid or you know, a Leon Dricidle,
- 12:12Speaker 2: a Barkoff, Like you talk about these talents, you know,
- 12:16Speaker 2: Anjie Copetar had that talent, but he wasn't the fastest
- 12:18Speaker 2: and he wasn't necessarily the most skilled. He has a
- 12:22Speaker 2: lot of skill, but like you know, it wasn't this
- 12:25Speaker 2: dynamic jump off the page at you kind of NHL
- 12:29Speaker 2: hockey player. But he adapted throughout the years and he's
- 12:31Speaker 2: just found a way to be a defensive stalwart out
- 12:34Speaker 2: there and contribute offensively. And he's really just been on
- 12:38Speaker 2: top of that, just a great quiet leader and a
- 12:41Speaker 2: great guy. And anybody you ask within that franchise, anyone
- 12:44Speaker 2: you ask that's played within that organization says the same thing.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Anjre Copetar is just a great human being. And a
- 12:49Speaker 2: great guy to root for, So it's just for me
- 12:52Speaker 2: he's up there. And to your point, I think you
- 12:54Speaker 2: hit the nail on the head. He's very underappreciated and
- 12:57Speaker 2: has always been underappreciated. I think even now just by
- 13:01Speaker 2: the way he had, you know, he announced his retirement
- 13:05Speaker 2: so understated. He's like, yeah, this is my last year,
- 13:07Speaker 2: and I just feel like it could have been even
- 13:09Speaker 2: bigger news. But being in LA, it's a little bit
- 13:13Speaker 2: it gets less out you know, it's less out there
- 13:15Speaker 2: being in hockey in LA. But I just think, what
- 13:17Speaker 2: a career, what an amazing guy. And yeah, I just
- 13:22Speaker 2: think you can't say enough good things about him, no
- 13:24Speaker 2: question about.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Hopefully Copetar finishes strong and who knows, the King's title
- 13:28Speaker 1: window could be closing with him saying farewell. Speaking of farewell,
- 13:31Speaker 1: we say goodbye to I think one of the great
- 13:33Speaker 1: underappreciated again goalies of all time, Bernie Perant. Two weeks
- 13:37Speaker 1: after the pass of the legendary Canadians goaltender Ken Dryden,
- 13:40Speaker 1: the sport loses another all time great as Bernie pron
- 13:42Speaker 1: passed at the age of eighty. He played six hundred
- 13:45Speaker 1: and eight games the Bruins Flyers and the Leafs. He'll
- 13:48Speaker 1: always remember those the backstoff for the broad Street Bullies.
- 13:50Speaker 1: They won the Cup in seventy four and seventy five.
- 13:52Speaker 1: His number one was retired by Philly in nineteen seventy nine.
- 13:55Speaker 1: He was inducting the Hockey All Fame in nineteen eighty four.
- 13:57Speaker 2: GDI.
- 13:58Speaker 1: If you look at those numbers, those cup runs, like
- 14:00Speaker 1: he was unbelievable for this team. We know about Bobby
- 14:02Speaker 1: Clark and Dave Shelton, the broad Street Bullies and all
- 14:04Speaker 1: the rest of it, but they don't win without Bernie
- 14:06Speaker 1: Parant And one of my favorite signs ever in the game,
- 14:08Speaker 1: only the Lord saves more than Bernie Parant. He was
- 14:11Speaker 1: unbelievable in Philadelphia.
- 14:14Speaker 2: I mean, yes, rest in peace. Too many good goalies
- 14:16Speaker 2: getting taken away from us right now. But you said it.
- 14:20Speaker 2: You took exactly what I was going to say. I
- 14:21Speaker 2: think the broad Street Bullies aren't the broad Street Pollys
- 14:24Speaker 2: without Bernie Paran. So just what a career and those
- 14:28Speaker 2: runs were just what a fun team to watch and
- 14:30Speaker 2: he backstopped him so because again a team like that,
- 14:33Speaker 2: that's that on the line, physical dirty. You know, they
- 14:37Speaker 2: take a lot of penalties, and you need a good
- 14:38Speaker 2: goaltender back there to kill the penalties and make big
- 14:41Speaker 2: saves when they're you know, chasing everybody around the ice.
- 14:44Speaker 2: So amazing career, amazing human being. I've heard and didn't
- 14:48Speaker 2: have the pleasure of meeting him, but no rest in
- 14:51Speaker 2: peace to him. One more thoughts.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Making of former Flyer goaltenders Carter Hart considering signing with
- 14:56Speaker 1: the Vegas Golden Knights and killing Hurricanes along with one
- 14:59Speaker 1: or two other unnamed teams is according to Chris Johnson
- 15:01Speaker 1: TSN and the Athletics, so Heart last play the NHL
- 15:04Speaker 1: in January twenty twenty four before he was indicted later
- 15:07Speaker 1: acquitted of sexual assault along with four Team Canada teammates,
- 15:11Speaker 1: stepping from an instant that took place in twenty eighteen.
- 15:13Speaker 1: The NHL ruled Heart and the four other players are
- 15:16Speaker 1: eligible to sign with the NHL teams October fifteenth. They
- 15:19Speaker 1: can begin playing in games on December first. At one point, Gadi,
- 15:23Speaker 1: as you know, Hart was thought to be the next
- 15:25Speaker 1: great Flyers goalten. After all these years of guys who
- 15:27Speaker 1: didn't work out, Roman check Manic Robert ashe name it,
- 15:30Speaker 1: They're like, Oh, Carter Hart's gonna be the guy. So
- 15:32Speaker 1: what do you make of him potentially returning to the
- 15:34Speaker 1: league this season.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Oh, you put me, put me in a tough spot
- 15:38Speaker 2: here and unscripted.
- 15:40Speaker 1: I think he's gonna sign. I think he's gonna play it.
- 15:42Speaker 1: But I think there's gonna be some backlash.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Oh, I think one hundred percent there is backlash. Especially
- 15:46Speaker 2: I just think every time he goes back to Canada
- 15:48Speaker 2: and and listen, regardless of what happened, what's true. The
- 15:55Speaker 2: justice system acquitted them of these charges, but doesn't mean
- 16:00Speaker 2: you're not gonna catch flack. Because whenever that type of
- 16:04Speaker 2: valigation or that type of process that you go through
- 16:09Speaker 2: gets out there, I mean, it's it follows you the
- 16:12Speaker 2: rest of your life. So for him and these kids
- 16:14Speaker 2: or you know, these adults that played hockey and are
- 16:18Speaker 2: going to continue to try to play hockey at the
- 16:19Speaker 2: professional level, they're going to catch a lot of flak
- 16:22Speaker 2: for this. So whether it's right or wrong, it's it's
- 16:25Speaker 2: really what it is. And I think he, at before
- 16:29Speaker 2: all of this happened, was a huge prospect and was
- 16:32Speaker 2: really finding his game. And I do think a team
- 16:34Speaker 2: will take a shot on him. I think they're going
- 16:36Speaker 2: to really do their due diligence, But I don't see
- 16:39Speaker 2: a team in Canada picking them up, and if they do,
- 16:43Speaker 2: I would assume it's a team way out west. Maybe
- 16:45Speaker 2: Vancouver could be a team that potentially scoops him up.
- 16:49Speaker 2: I know Philly said they're not going to go for them,
- 16:51Speaker 2: so you know, they probably just kind of It's a
- 16:54Speaker 2: tough one because you're the you want to be the
- 16:56Speaker 2: first team to do it, but every team is sitting
- 16:59Speaker 2: in their war room going, this is probably the best
- 17:03Speaker 2: goal available and you don't have to trade for him,
- 17:06Speaker 2: you can just sign him. So we're going to see
- 17:08Speaker 2: what happens. I expect a team out west to maybe
- 17:10Speaker 2: sign him. I could there were some rubblings of the
- 17:13Speaker 2: Edmonton Oilers as well, but I think they're gonna wait
- 17:16Speaker 2: because I just I can't imagine being in Canada, him
- 17:19Speaker 2: living in Canada. I think it'd be really tough. So
- 17:24Speaker 2: I feel like him going to maybe a Pacific Division
- 17:26Speaker 2: team or a Central team where you're not playing a
- 17:29Speaker 2: ton of games against Canadian teams would be the best
- 17:32Speaker 2: place for them to go for Carter Hart. But yeah,
- 17:36Speaker 2: he's out of those guys. He's the nhlready player and
- 17:39Speaker 2: I assume and would bet that he's gonna get signed
- 17:44Speaker 2: maybe the next few weeks, if not a month into
- 17:46Speaker 2: the season.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna suggest Edmonton t because he's from
- 17:49Speaker 1: Subood Park Alborda, and we all know the challenges they've
- 17:52Speaker 1: had in NET. But I understand your point, the sensitivity
- 17:54Speaker 1: to it. He's still just a young man. He's only
- 17:56Speaker 1: twenty seven years ago. There should be a lot of
- 17:58Speaker 1: hockey left in Carter Heart's career, all right, coming up
- 18:00Speaker 1: next year an NHL in script, How did Chris Ponger
- 18:02Speaker 1: overcome too much muscle relied to do something no one
- 18:05Speaker 1: has ever done in hockey history? The answer is next,
- 18:20Speaker 1: our next guest to Hockey.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Hall of Famer.
- 18:22Speaker 1: One of the most dominant and intimidating players of his era,
- 18:25Speaker 1: Collecting six hundred and ninety eight points and one and
- 18:28Speaker 1: sixty seven career NHL games with the Whalers, Blues, Oilers,
- 18:31Speaker 1: Ducks and Flyers. He won the Stanley Cup of the
- 18:34Speaker 1: Anaheim in two thousand and seven, remains the only defenseman
- 18:37Speaker 1: in the last fifty years when the Heart Trophy, which
- 18:40Speaker 1: he did as a member of the Saint Louis Blues
- 18:41Speaker 1: in two thousand walk May Brady, let's get nasty.
- 18:44Speaker 2: We're Chris Pronger.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Prob's great to see you man, good to be seen.
- 18:48Speaker 4: Thank you. So we had an anti introduction.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Absolutely, it gets even nice. I mean, talk about that.
- 18:54Speaker 2: You know how busy you've been recently in all the
- 18:58Speaker 2: things you're diving into. Just tell us what you got
- 19:00Speaker 2: going on and how much you've enjoyed this kind of
- 19:03Speaker 2: last couple of years of jumping into life, coaching, jumping
- 19:07Speaker 2: into media TV. It seems like you just got it
- 19:10Speaker 2: all going on right now.
- 19:11Speaker 4: Yeah, it's been exciting.
- 19:13Speaker 5: You know, spent six plus years kind of back in
- 19:17Speaker 5: the hockey space post retirement. I spent a couple of
- 19:20Speaker 5: years getting healthy and then worked with the Nashal Hockeying
- 19:22Speaker 5: and Apartment of Player of Safety. Then I was a
- 19:25Speaker 5: senior advisor in Florida for three years, and then you know,
- 19:29Speaker 5: just wasn't feeling it. When you see how the sausage
- 19:32Speaker 5: is being made on the other side, it.
- 19:34Speaker 4: Just wasn't for me.
- 19:36Speaker 5: And you know, that was always something that I thought
- 19:38Speaker 5: I was going to do post playing career, and when
- 19:41Speaker 5: those plans don't mesh together, you kind of need to
- 19:46Speaker 5: do a reboot and spent a couple of years trying
- 19:49Speaker 5: to figure out what was moving the needle. At the
- 19:52Speaker 5: same time as I was leaving the Florida Panthers, my
- 19:56Speaker 5: wife had started a luxury travel company and was kind
- 19:58Speaker 5: of helping her with that, started up a whiskey company
- 20:02Speaker 5: and that kind of and its course, and now just
- 20:07Speaker 5: you know, really started to dig into.
- 20:11Speaker 4: Performance coaching.
- 20:12Speaker 5: I don't like to call it motivational coaching because I'm
- 20:15Speaker 5: not necessarily there to motivate you. I'm there to help
- 20:17Speaker 5: you improve your performance long term and not have the
- 20:20Speaker 5: blips that we see with motivation comes and goes, it wanes,
- 20:24Speaker 5: but performance should not, and discipline and habit should not.
- 20:28Speaker 5: So you know, that's something that I really dig into
- 20:31Speaker 5: with my coaching. And then obviously I've kind of dove
- 20:35Speaker 5: into TV a little bit here the last couple of years,
- 20:37Speaker 5: and last year did.
- 20:39Speaker 4: A brief stint in Saint Louis. That's right in Saint.
- 20:43Speaker 5: Louis, a short drive for my house, so that worked
- 20:45Speaker 5: out well, and and did a couple of Blues games
- 20:48Speaker 5: as well. So then and then did some playoffs with
- 20:50Speaker 5: the ESPN and and sportsnets, so kind of dip my
- 20:53Speaker 5: toe in a little bit, got a little taste, a
- 20:55Speaker 5: little flavor for what's to come this year, and gonna
- 20:58Speaker 5: do probably thirteen or fourteen Blues games.
- 21:01Speaker 1: It's awesome, man, And sorry, yeah, I would be remiss
- 21:05Speaker 1: if I did not mention that come April there will
- 21:09Speaker 1: book at Chris Pronger.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Book coming out, nice, amazing. A lot of.
- 21:14Speaker 5: Promos and marketing and things like that over the next
- 21:18Speaker 5: six months or so to kind of build that up
- 21:21Speaker 5: in the lead lead up.
- 21:23Speaker 4: To the book release.
- 21:24Speaker 5: And there are a few stories that people will be
- 21:27Speaker 5: inquiring about that will be settled in the book, that's
- 21:29Speaker 5: for sure.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Nice O was but to say, I know what a
- 21:32Speaker 1: great storyteller you are, and I cannot wait for the book.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Let's tell a few of those stories right now.
- 21:36Speaker 1: You go way back with our buddy John Foresland, who's
- 21:39Speaker 1: the voice of Amazon Prime minyed Hockey, because you came
- 21:41Speaker 1: to the league second overall pick of the Hertford Whalers. Now,
- 21:44Speaker 1: Prongs I was at ESPN twenty ten to twenty nineteen,
- 21:47Speaker 1: so I was there and still the Whaler's jersey was iconic.
- 21:50Speaker 1: It's still the best selling thing right in Connecticut. Saved
- 21:53Speaker 1: the whale ever I was going. So I'm going around.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I remember asking Brian Brook where should I live and
- 21:58Speaker 1: he goes, you know you're gonna be working in Bristol.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Don't live in Bristol, West, Hartford, Avon. Those are the
- 22:02Speaker 1: places to go. But you have a different memory of
- 22:04Speaker 1: Hartford back before I was there, Like in the nineties.
- 22:06Speaker 1: What was it like playing in Hartford.
- 22:08Speaker 5: It is funny because even to this day, to your point,
- 22:11Speaker 5: when I wear my whaler's gear around, which I do
- 22:13Speaker 5: once in a while, yeah, I get so many people,
- 22:16Speaker 5: Oh my god, I love the Whalers, and I'm always like, oh,
- 22:18Speaker 5: you're the one. We had no fans, you know. We
- 22:23Speaker 5: would play Boston on a Saturday night and half the
- 22:26Speaker 5: building would be Bruins fans. We would play the Rangers
- 22:29Speaker 5: on a Thursday or Saturday night and half the building
- 22:31Speaker 5: would be Rangers fans. You know, we had we had
- 22:34Speaker 5: eight to ten thousand die hard Whalers fans and then
- 22:37Speaker 5: the building was scattered with whoever we were playing that night.
- 22:42Speaker 5: But you know, John Foresland was the team services man
- 22:47Speaker 5: for the Hartford.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Whalers way back when.
- 22:51Speaker 5: So I've known, as you said, I've known John since
- 22:54Speaker 5: nineteen ninety three, and again, you know, he got to
- 22:58Speaker 5: see my rise through my career. I got to see
- 23:01Speaker 5: his rise through his career and kind of how he
- 23:04Speaker 5: took his team services role with the Whalers then Hurricanes
- 23:07Speaker 5: and parlayed that into TV.
- 23:09Speaker 4: And now look at the great job that he does.
- 23:11Speaker 5: He's, uh, he's a class act and a great a
- 23:14Speaker 5: great announcer.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I mean he's he's one of the classiest. We had
- 23:18Speaker 2: him on the show. He's fantastic. But you know, you
- 23:21Speaker 2: have your short sin in Hartford and then you're off
- 23:22Speaker 2: to Saint Louis and and I mean talk about that
- 23:25Speaker 2: going from Hartford to Saint Louis, especially you know, first
- 23:29Speaker 2: year there, you got Mike Keenan as a coach, Brett Hall,
- 23:31Speaker 2: Tony Twist, like all those personalities. How was that Tolly Twist?
- 23:39Speaker 2: How was that? And uh, how was that? Kind of
- 23:42Speaker 2: growing up on that team and and and really kind
- 23:44Speaker 2: of finding your footing and becoming just that the superstar
- 23:47Speaker 2: that we all know you were in the league.
- 23:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess you kind of got to back up
- 23:51Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 23:51Speaker 5: I think expectations may have been a little high in Hartford.
- 23:55Speaker 5: I think with maybe what fans were expecting, and I was,
- 24:00Speaker 5: you know, a little green, a little raw, and not
- 24:04Speaker 5: quite there yet, but was precipitously booed in Hartford. And
- 24:10Speaker 5: so when I got traded to Saint Louis, I was excited.
- 24:14Speaker 4: I was like, Ah, this is gonna be great.
- 24:16Speaker 5: I'm thinking, Oh, I get to play with Holly and
- 24:18Speaker 5: Al mckinnis, and they just signed Fursy and Jeff Courtnell
- 24:22Speaker 5: and all these guys, and back and back then the
- 24:24Speaker 5: geek Carbona and Dale Howard, Chuck and all these guys.
- 24:28Speaker 4: This is gonna be amazing.
- 24:30Speaker 5: And I get there not realizing that Brendan Shanahan had
- 24:34Speaker 5: almost surpassed Brett Hall in fame in the city of
- 24:37Speaker 5: Saint Louis and stardom fifty goal scorer, obviously physical.
- 24:41Speaker 4: Presence that he was.
- 24:42Speaker 5: And I kind of came in not realizing who I
- 24:46Speaker 5: was supposed to replace, and Mike Keenan quickly put me.
- 24:50Speaker 4: In my place.
- 24:52Speaker 5: I was not in great shape coming into training camp,
- 24:56Speaker 5: and he quickly told me so.
- 24:59Speaker 4: As only he can.
- 25:01Speaker 2: He fired Mike. Yeah, yeah, and then you know.
- 25:06Speaker 5: Spent the better part of that season in the doghouse
- 25:09Speaker 5: with the coach. Last GM some of my teammates, pretty
- 25:15Speaker 5: much all the fans, and tried to figure out a
- 25:19Speaker 5: way to play myself out of it. And it was
- 25:22Speaker 5: a tough year, but one I think that really built
- 25:27Speaker 5: up the grit and resilience that I talk about a
- 25:29Speaker 5: lot in the book that I talk about when I
- 25:30Speaker 5: speak that I think allowed me to meet everything else
- 25:34Speaker 5: that I that I encountered during my career head on.
- 25:38Speaker 4: You know, the hard incident, you know, the.
- 25:43Speaker 5: Myriad of injuries, and just all the trades, all the
- 25:47Speaker 5: different things that had kind of gone on, the lockouts,
- 25:49Speaker 5: everything that kind of gone on.
- 25:51Speaker 4: There was a.
- 25:53Speaker 5: Great deal of heartache and strife. But I think having
- 25:57Speaker 5: gone through all that early pain and circumstance early on,
- 26:02Speaker 5: I think allowed me to really manage these other stuff
- 26:06Speaker 5: in an easier light and really propel me forward to
- 26:09Speaker 5: try to achieve and get past the term potential, which
- 26:14Speaker 5: is a very difficult label, and kind of reach my
- 26:17Speaker 5: full potential and play to the level that I expected
- 26:20Speaker 5: in the way that I felt like I could as
- 26:22Speaker 5: I came into the league, and uh, you know it
- 26:24Speaker 5: was being paid to do.
- 26:26Speaker 2: I mean talk you know your life coach now. So
- 26:29Speaker 2: I want to touch on that a little bit like,
- 26:31Speaker 2: what's the one biggest takeaway that you learned from all
- 26:35Speaker 2: of that heartache and adversity that you had to overcome
- 26:39Speaker 2: early in your career to kind of get to where
- 26:42Speaker 2: you you know, the majority of of how successful you
- 26:45Speaker 2: were and how you finished.
- 26:47Speaker 5: Yeah, I would say we are our own worst enemy.
- 26:50Speaker 5: I know I was my own worst enemy, from the
- 26:52Speaker 5: victim mentality, to blaming everybody, to blaming the fans, to
- 26:56Speaker 5: blaming the situation, to blaming my deep partner, to blaming
- 27:00Speaker 5: this guy or that guy. At the end of the day,
- 27:03Speaker 5: you got to look at the person in the mirror
- 27:04Speaker 5: and realize you need to take ownership.
- 27:07Speaker 4: You need to do more.
- 27:08Speaker 5: You need to be willing to sacrifice and do all
- 27:10Speaker 5: the things necessary to live a full life and play
- 27:13Speaker 5: to the best of your abilities.
- 27:14Speaker 4: And it's within you.
- 27:15Speaker 5: It's in within your control, and what you do moving
- 27:18Speaker 5: forward can dictate how how good you play, how good
- 27:24Speaker 5: you are at your job, how you live your life
- 27:28Speaker 5: and live it to its fullest. And so I try
- 27:31Speaker 5: to explain to people, I'm not there to make people
- 27:33Speaker 5: feel good, you know, I'm there to kind of hold
- 27:35Speaker 5: their feet to the fire and hold them accountable.
- 27:37Speaker 4: For and ask some serious questions. What do they want
- 27:41Speaker 4: out of their careers? What do they want out of
- 27:43Speaker 4: their life? I have, you know, and I'll walked them.
- 27:46Speaker 5: I'll put them in my shoes of all the difficult decisions,
- 27:49Speaker 5: all the mistakes I've made, all the things that have
- 27:52Speaker 5: come from taking ownership and responsibility and things of that nature.
- 27:55Speaker 5: And you know, ultimately, those that want to make change
- 27:59Speaker 5: are willing to do what's necessary, and those that want
- 28:02Speaker 5: to stay in that mindset they do. You know again,
- 28:06Speaker 5: that's it's everything is completely in their control. And I
- 28:09Speaker 5: think once people realize that they don't quit as easily
- 28:13Speaker 5: they pushed through difficult moments. They they don't accept failure,
- 28:17Speaker 5: but realize that failure is part of the growth prospects
- 28:20Speaker 5: and and it's a gift because it allows you to
- 28:23Speaker 5: to evolve and adapt and get better in areas of
- 28:26Speaker 5: your life that you need it.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Chris Pronger off the ice, affable, charming, self deprecating. So
- 28:33Speaker 1: how is it pronged you were such a mean son
- 28:35Speaker 1: of a bitch on the ice?
- 28:38Speaker 5: You know, it's get I do get asked that a lot,
- 28:42Speaker 5: you know what, I I just love to play the
- 28:45Speaker 5: game with a physical edge. Always played it, even as
- 28:48Speaker 5: a young kid. That's how I always played. You know,
- 28:51Speaker 5: somebody would take liberties with the teammate. I would make
- 28:54Speaker 5: sure that I knew when that player, like I had
- 28:58Speaker 5: a very good sense of who was on the ice,
- 29:00Speaker 5: when they were coming on the ice, how they played,
- 29:03Speaker 5: where I might be able to get at them, and
- 29:04Speaker 5: then made sure that I was in that position at
- 29:07Speaker 5: some point over the course of that game or a
- 29:11Speaker 5: future game, to make sure I let that person know
- 29:14Speaker 5: that that was unacceptable.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Well, I mean I was a party to one of
- 29:21Speaker 2: your cross checks later in your career, which you probably
- 29:24Speaker 2: don't remember, and those those became famous for just the
- 29:29Speaker 2: ability to find the sweet spot between the shoulder pads
- 29:33Speaker 2: and the elbow pad. And it is an art form.
- 29:36Speaker 2: And is that something you had you learned as you
- 29:39Speaker 2: were playing, like you said, or was it something that
- 29:41Speaker 2: maybe a veteran or somebody taught you early on? Because
- 29:45Speaker 2: it hurt like it hurt, you know.
- 29:48Speaker 4: I studied the game.
- 29:50Speaker 5: I studied I mean, as silly as it sounds, I
- 29:53Speaker 5: studied players equipment.
- 29:55Speaker 4: Everybody has pads in different areas.
- 29:58Speaker 5: Everybody adds pads, whether they're adding slash guards or backpads
- 30:01Speaker 5: or rib rib guards or what have you. I would
- 30:05Speaker 5: take note.
- 30:06Speaker 4: You know, you cross check a guy in the back
- 30:07Speaker 4: and you hit a pad, You're like, oh, that's not
- 30:10Speaker 4: normally there.
- 30:10Speaker 5: So then you start feeling around with your thing, where's
- 30:13Speaker 5: the hole? And then the next one goes right where
- 30:16Speaker 5: that hole is? You know, Slade, You know, I'd see
- 30:20Speaker 5: a guy off off a draw, and you know, especially
- 30:23Speaker 5: guys that had the short cuffs, You're like, there's a
- 30:25Speaker 5: lot of meat there waiting to be whacked, and you
- 30:28Speaker 5: just give him a little complimentary just to let him
- 30:30Speaker 5: know you're there, just to give him a little food
- 30:34Speaker 5: for thought.
- 30:35Speaker 4: The next time they're coming down your side, you might
- 30:37Speaker 4: not want to do that.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so good.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Between Al mckinnessy you mentioned Prongs and Scott Needemar. Are
- 30:44Speaker 1: you played with two the great defenseman hockey history. How
- 30:47Speaker 1: are those guys similar and how are they different?
- 30:52Speaker 5: I think how they're similar is they're they're both looked
- 30:54Speaker 5: at as offensive players, but both were very good defensively.
- 31:00Speaker 5: I think Al made himself more so into a better defender.
- 31:02Speaker 5: I think Scotty always was just with his skating ability,
- 31:06Speaker 5: but they both had a burning desire to compete and
- 31:11Speaker 5: took offense that they were always categorized I think as
- 31:14Speaker 5: offensive defenseman.
- 31:16Speaker 4: Yeah, and and competed really hard defensively.
- 31:18Speaker 5: You know, you look at you talk about how I
- 31:21Speaker 5: used my stick. Al was pretty vicious with his stick
- 31:25Speaker 5: as well. I think that was kind of a secret,
- 31:28Speaker 5: if you will, Maybe not to opponents, but I think
- 31:31Speaker 5: around the league, everybody looked at the big shot and
- 31:33Speaker 5: his stats and the numbers and everything, but he had
- 31:37Speaker 5: a little bite to his game and Scotty norm.
- 31:41Speaker 2: As we as we call him nor.
- 31:44Speaker 4: He had a little little sandpapers game too.
- 31:48Speaker 5: I used to love when he got mad and you
- 31:50Speaker 5: could kind of see him get a little feisty and
- 31:52Speaker 5: grind on guys in the corner. And you know, I
- 31:55Speaker 5: think that both those guys as leaders on our teams,
- 31:59Speaker 5: that translated really well to the group because they were
- 32:03Speaker 5: quietly aggressive and quietly competitive. And I think that kind
- 32:08Speaker 5: of you have the vocal guys like myself, and then
- 32:11Speaker 5: you have the strong, silent types like them, and I
- 32:14Speaker 5: think that's a really good balance and really worked well
- 32:17Speaker 5: in our.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Locker rooms well, and I mean it didn't work, It worked,
- 32:23Speaker 2: you know so much in Anaheim, especially when you were
- 32:26Speaker 2: at Scotty, you win a Cup. I mean talk about that.
- 32:29Speaker 2: You know, you guys had a great group of veterans,
- 32:32Speaker 2: you surrounded some really good young talent and get slav Perry,
- 32:36Speaker 2: did you know going into that season and like this
- 32:39Speaker 2: is you know we got something here? Or did it
- 32:41Speaker 2: really take some time? And because man Oman, did you
- 32:44Speaker 2: just have I tell a lot of people like that
- 32:46Speaker 2: team come playoff time. Was just one of the most
- 32:50Speaker 2: well balanced Cup winning teams in recent memory. Just top
- 32:53Speaker 2: to bottom, was so dominant, was so good and so
- 32:56Speaker 2: fun to watch on that playoff, on that Cup winning run.
- 33:00Speaker 5: Yeah, right from the jump when I got there, having
- 33:03Speaker 5: playing against him in the Differen's finals when I was
- 33:05Speaker 5: at Edmonton, knew their roster, knew how balanced they were,
- 33:09Speaker 5: knew you know, the kind of missing piece if you will.
- 33:13Speaker 5: So we had a one, A, one B on the
- 33:15Speaker 5: back end with Scotty myself, the depth that we had
- 33:19Speaker 5: up front. As you talked about the youth, we had
- 33:21Speaker 5: the veteran line with the young Chris Kunitz, and then
- 33:24Speaker 5: we had any McDonald at Taymuselane and then we had
- 33:27Speaker 5: the young the young Bucks Penner gets laugh and Perry
- 33:31Speaker 5: then we had our checking line with Mowen, Niedermar and Paulson,
- 33:35Speaker 5: and then we had our greedy fourth line with we
- 33:38Speaker 5: had Brad May, Todd Marshaunt, Sean Thornton, George Parows. We
- 33:43Speaker 5: had some some young guys in Ryan Channon, Joey Motsko
- 33:47Speaker 5: who played in the playoffs, played really well. Mark Cardigan
- 33:50Speaker 5: came in and played. He hadn't played all season with us.
- 33:52Speaker 5: We picked him up at the deadline, played in the minors,
- 33:55Speaker 5: and then we had enough injuries that he got to
- 33:57Speaker 5: play in the Stanley Cup finals. And to have those guys,
- 34:01Speaker 5: you know, I speak of those three guys in particular
- 34:03Speaker 5: Shannon and Hartigan. Shandy played a little bit with us
- 34:07Speaker 5: in the regular season but played a lot in the miners.
- 34:09Speaker 5: The other two played specifically in the minors, and then
- 34:13Speaker 5: they came in in the playoffs we're are black aces
- 34:15Speaker 5: and and played meaningful minutes.
- 34:17Speaker 4: For us when we had injuries.
- 34:18Speaker 5: And uh, you know, I think often those are the
- 34:21Speaker 5: types of players in a in a playoff run, they
- 34:24Speaker 5: get overlooked.
- 34:25Speaker 4: You know. We picked up Brad May, that was our
- 34:27Speaker 4: only trade at the deadline.
- 34:28Speaker 5: And and what he provided for us from a from
- 34:31Speaker 5: an energy side and a physicality side, and just a
- 34:34Speaker 5: leadership and grit site. You know, obviously George and what
- 34:38Speaker 5: he provided for us throughout the course of the season
- 34:40Speaker 5: once we picked him up early on in the in
- 34:42Speaker 5: the year from Colorado, but overall, I mean, other than
- 34:46Speaker 5: myself and then those few roster changes, that was the
- 34:50Speaker 5: lineup from the year before. So they had a group
- 34:52Speaker 5: that was really coming together. And the moment I got
- 34:55Speaker 5: there Burkie and Randy Carlisle and even the ownership, I
- 34:59Speaker 5: was like, this is our our mission. This team is here,
- 35:02Speaker 5: this team has been put in place to winn a
- 35:04Speaker 5: Stanton a cup.
- 35:05Speaker 4: Now go out and execute and take action.
- 35:07Speaker 5: And uh, you know, right right from the beginning game,
- 35:10Speaker 5: you know, we believed in one another, you know, we
- 35:13Speaker 5: it was such a fun team to play on. You know,
- 35:15Speaker 5: we could play tough, we could play finase, we could
- 35:17Speaker 5: play a tight checking game.
- 35:19Speaker 4: We could play however you wanted.
- 35:20Speaker 5: And that was the joy in playing with with with
- 35:24Speaker 5: that team is that we sometimes we'd just figure out
- 35:26Speaker 5: now the other team wanted to play, and then we'd
- 35:28Speaker 5: beat him at their own game.
- 35:30Speaker 1: It's a fun time to be a Philly sports fan
- 35:31Speaker 1: because the Eagles are defending Super Bowl champions three and
- 35:33Speaker 1: Ozer right now. You were there in Philly and O seven,
- 35:35Speaker 1: which was a beloved team because there are number eight
- 35:38Speaker 1: seed prongs and you and Mike Richards and Jeff Carter
- 35:41Speaker 1: and Claw Jerux and Simone Gania and James Van Riems,
- 35:43Speaker 1: like take that team all the way to the Stanley
- 35:45Speaker 1: Cup Final. What memories do you have about that run?
- 35:48Speaker 4: It was?
- 35:48Speaker 5: Uh, I mean other than the fact we lost, thank you,
- 35:54Speaker 5: I'm going to bring mad us yeah.
- 35:56Speaker 4: Whatever, Chicago, Uh No, it was. It was a it
- 36:00Speaker 4: was a miracuous run. We we had.
- 36:02Speaker 5: Such a great team. You talk about a lot of
- 36:04Speaker 5: the young guys that we had that would go on
- 36:05Speaker 5: to win in LA. You know, I think just getting
- 36:09Speaker 5: into the playoffs, winning a shootout game against the Rangers
- 36:13Speaker 5: to solidify our position and then to go on that run,
- 36:17Speaker 5: you know, beat a good New Jersey Devil's team in
- 36:20Speaker 5: the one eight seed. Then we played Boston down three zero,
- 36:24Speaker 5: came back and won four to three in that one.
- 36:27Speaker 5: Then Montreal, who had just knocked off Pittsburgh and Washington,
- 36:31Speaker 5: you know, going to play them and and kind of
- 36:34Speaker 5: put them in their place, and then you know we
- 36:38Speaker 5: I think we got off to a good start in
- 36:40Speaker 5: Game one against Chicago and then I don't know, I
- 36:43Speaker 5: don't know what it was, just fell apart. It was
- 36:45Speaker 5: a high score. I think six' five might have been
- 36:47Speaker 5: the final score at a couple of. Junctures we had
- 36:49Speaker 5: a lead in that game and kind of lost, it
- 36:52Speaker 5: and then we had a late goal in game two
- 36:54Speaker 5: to lose two to.
- 36:55Speaker 4: One. Heartbreaker come, home we win a couple of, games.
- 36:59Speaker 5: And and AND i think WHAT i was trying to
- 37:02Speaker 5: impart on our on our, guys this is.
- 37:04Speaker 4: It they're supposed to.
- 37:06Speaker 5: WIN i always tell team they're supposed to win their home,
- 37:08Speaker 5: games like that's why you have home and. Rope they're
- 37:10Speaker 5: supposed to win their home. Games we win our home,
- 37:12Speaker 5: games and then it's the best of three and anything can.
- 37:14Speaker 5: Happen we lose a heartbreaker In game five In, chicago
- 37:18Speaker 5: and then we lose that crazy overtime game Where caine
- 37:21Speaker 5: scores from the.
- 37:21Speaker 4: Corner and it's all.
- 37:23Speaker 5: Over and right before that goal was, scored we had
- 37:26Speaker 5: a couple of great a. Chances Anti yami comes up
- 37:31Speaker 5: with like a couple.
- 37:31Speaker 4: Of huge saves for them And.
- 37:33Speaker 5: Nemo, yeah the rest is history for The, blackhawks but
- 37:38Speaker 5: that kind of starts their run in the early twenty.
- 37:40Speaker 5: Tens but you know it was you, know you look
- 37:44Speaker 5: at you, know they had a Young buffalo and they
- 37:46Speaker 5: had you, know Taves caane all kind of in their
- 37:51Speaker 5: rising on their initial. Contracts you, know so you look
- 37:54Speaker 5: at kind of where teams try to get to when
- 37:56Speaker 5: they have those young players and they.
- 37:58Speaker 4: Kind of bottom.
- 37:59Speaker 5: Out they wanted they want to bottom out and dip
- 38:01Speaker 5: right away and use them as kind of that key
- 38:04Speaker 5: bounce point to to utilize their their rookie contracts and
- 38:09Speaker 5: not get up against the cap right. Away but uh,
- 38:12Speaker 5: uh you, know they had a lot of, good great
- 38:14Speaker 5: players in their team as.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Well they just found a way to. Win like we
- 38:17Speaker 2: got swept by them that the the round, before so
- 38:21Speaker 2: we kind of we warmed them up for you guys
- 38:24Speaker 2: and really kind of well than we took Our we
- 38:27Speaker 2: took our pound and. Flesh but you, know it's just
- 38:29Speaker 2: one of those teams and you know THAT i feel
- 38:31Speaker 2: like the belief and you talked about it With, anaheim
- 38:34Speaker 2: but having that belief so important on AN nhl, team
- 38:37Speaker 2: and when you have, it it can it can really
- 38:39Speaker 2: carry you. Where you, know games you're not supposed to
- 38:42Speaker 2: win their. Games you're not in. It you just find that.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Way AND i feel like you've touched on it a
- 38:46Speaker 2: few times even in your your. Coaching the way you
- 38:50Speaker 2: teach people is like, listen it's it's within, you and
- 38:53Speaker 2: you got to have that belief if you want to
- 38:54Speaker 2: actually win or or be successful in hockey in. Life,
- 39:00Speaker 2: Yeah AND i think as you.
- 39:00Speaker 5: Talk about that, team they also had some. Failure they
- 39:03Speaker 5: they nine in the conference finals Of. Detroit they had
- 39:07Speaker 5: some learning, lessons some life, lessons if you, will along
- 39:11Speaker 5: the way that allowed them to meet some of that
- 39:14Speaker 5: adversity head, on to really understand what it's going to
- 39:18Speaker 5: feel like and in order to build that belief in one,
- 39:21Speaker 5: another showing up for one another and ultimately come out
- 39:24Speaker 5: on the other side successful and win.
- 39:26Speaker 4: Championships and you know.
- 39:28Speaker 5: THAT i think those early losses really helped them create
- 39:32Speaker 5: that great resilience that's going to be necessary in order
- 39:35Speaker 5: to meet some of the adversity that you will face
- 39:37Speaker 5: throughout the course of a long playoffs.
- 39:40Speaker 4: In order to win a.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Championship, okay one person on this chain knows the. Answer
- 39:44Speaker 1: that person is not allowed to guess. Name the only
- 39:47Speaker 1: player in hockey history to score a goal on a
- 39:49Speaker 1: penalty shot in The cup. Final IMMEDIATELY i said, prongs
- 39:52Speaker 1: which is correct because you AND i have discussed this
- 39:54Speaker 1: two thousand and Six cup final Against.
- 39:56Speaker 2: Carolina talk to, me, yeah you.
- 39:59Speaker 5: Know what in the lead up to, that every after
- 40:03Speaker 5: every pro, this we would always do.
- 40:05Speaker 4: Shootouts we would always practice shootouts.
- 40:07Speaker 5: And you, know if you, score you keep, going you,
- 40:10Speaker 5: know one of those, deals AND i would always typically.
- 40:13Speaker 5: SCORE i had my two. Moves the ONE i scored
- 40:17Speaker 5: on In carolina was my main go to. Move but
- 40:19Speaker 5: if the goalie didn't bite on my, angle THEN i
- 40:21Speaker 5: would do something.
- 40:22Speaker 4: Else BUT i would.
- 40:23Speaker 5: Try to always either get get them to open their
- 40:26Speaker 5: legs or go down or do something early get them to.
- 40:28Speaker 5: Bite but in this particular, CASE i was out on
- 40:31Speaker 5: the ice with the fourth, LINE uh and one of
- 40:35Speaker 5: The carolina defensemen put their hand on the puck in the,
- 40:37Speaker 5: crease which is an immediate penalty. Shot Mick, magoo if
- 40:41Speaker 5: you look at the, video just happened to.
- 40:43Speaker 4: Be like scaring straight down at.
- 40:47Speaker 5: The situation and, immediately like as Only Mick it could,
- 40:51Speaker 5: do start give them the old belly shot. Signal and
- 40:55Speaker 5: AND i Think mac t had the Most craig McTavish
- 40:58Speaker 5: was our. COACH i think he had the most faith
- 41:00Speaker 5: in me based off seeing me in, practice AND i
- 41:04Speaker 5: think maybe the fact THAT i was out there with
- 41:05Speaker 5: the fourth.
- 41:05Speaker 4: Line. Uh but the but the funniest part about.
- 41:09Speaker 5: It three days before that first, game we were getting
- 41:13Speaker 5: ready to go To, carolina and, UH i was in
- 41:16Speaker 5: the weight room doing a lift AND i kind of
- 41:19Speaker 5: tweaked my. Back so if you notice during during if
- 41:23Speaker 5: you rewind the whole, CLIP i, SKATED i was on
- 41:27Speaker 5: muscle relaxers AND i skated. DOWN i skated down to
- 41:31Speaker 5: the fore end by our goalie and just kind of
- 41:34Speaker 5: did a lap in the corner and was kind of
- 41:36Speaker 5: zoning out waiting for him to blow the whistles SO
- 41:38Speaker 5: i could. GO i was maybe taking a couple of
- 41:41Speaker 5: deep breaths and trying to get in the dome in
- 41:46Speaker 5: the moment goose broba and, uh you, know do my deep,
- 41:52Speaker 5: breaths do my meditation and kind of get in the.
- 41:55Speaker 5: Zone BUT i had a nice long run up to
- 41:58Speaker 5: grabbing the puck and then kind of did did my
- 42:02Speaker 5: did my, deed and, uh it Was it's. Fun it's
- 42:05Speaker 5: nice to tell people that most. People IF i have
- 42:08Speaker 5: somebody else ask it And i'm not, around they certainly
- 42:11Speaker 5: won't get.
- 42:11Speaker 2: That oh that's, great great. Stuff they're going to find
- 42:15Speaker 2: all the little, Tidbits especially working in, media you're gonna
- 42:18Speaker 2: get all these little they're gonna pull up all these.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Stories but you, KNOW i wanted to ask you being in,
- 42:21Speaker 2: media you, know and and what was kind of the
- 42:25Speaker 2: biggest surprise for you and something that you didn't expect
- 42:29Speaker 2: kind of jumping into this this industry and have you you,
- 42:33Speaker 2: know you've obviously enjoy it because you're you're sticking with
- 42:36Speaker 2: it and you're just rising up the ranks and doing
- 42:39Speaker 2: so much incredible. Work so for, you, though what was
- 42:41Speaker 2: like your big surprise jumping into the media. World, YEAH
- 42:45Speaker 2: i don't.
- 42:45Speaker 4: KNOW i don't know if it was a.
- 42:46Speaker 5: SURPRISE i think the biggest thing THAT i did WAS
- 42:49Speaker 5: i asked a lot of people THAT i knew in
- 42:52Speaker 5: the industry a lot of, questions both you, know in
- 42:55Speaker 5: other sports and obviously in.
- 42:57Speaker 4: Hockey and the number.
- 43:00Speaker 5: One, is If i'm going to do, Anything i'm going
- 43:02Speaker 5: to do at one hundred percent And i'm to be all,
- 43:04Speaker 5: in and it's, preparation it's making Sure i've got a
- 43:08Speaker 5: full understanding of the, game it's implications kind of what's
- 43:12Speaker 5: been going on with the.
- 43:13Speaker 4: Team and then.
- 43:15Speaker 5: The, biggest the biggest thing that THAT i tried to
- 43:19Speaker 5: take away from. It Dan dirdorff was telling me the
- 43:22Speaker 5: story when he first, started he was doing a game
- 43:26Speaker 5: With Jack buck and and five minutes In Jack buck
- 43:31Speaker 5: wrote a note and pushed it in front of him
- 43:34Speaker 5: and he pointed down at the paper and he's, Like
- 43:37Speaker 5: and at the first intermission he looked at it and he's, Like,
- 43:40Speaker 5: dan you've Used you've already used the same word four. Times,
- 43:44Speaker 5: wow you need to expand change your, vocabulary you, know
- 43:47Speaker 5: start using a different, word whether we use certainly or
- 43:51Speaker 5: tremendous or, whatever.
- 43:52Speaker 4: Spectacular whatever word it.
- 43:54Speaker 5: Is just add a little more depth to what you're,
- 43:57Speaker 5: saying and, uh and what's the how and the?
- 44:00Speaker 4: Why like how did this? Happen and why did this?
- 44:02Speaker 5: Happen and and try to have the person listening on
- 44:07Speaker 5: the other end or watching on the other end have
- 44:10Speaker 5: a better understanding of what what they're seeing or hearing
- 44:12Speaker 5: and why it. Happened and then how can that player
- 44:15Speaker 5: either fix it or or why they're so good and
- 44:19Speaker 5: how they created, it AND i think those two Things
- 44:22Speaker 5: I've i've really taken a heart and really try to
- 44:25Speaker 5: study and get better at because it is.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Hard, yeah it. IS i USED i used incredible every
- 44:33Speaker 2: single time for like my first, month AND i, LIKE
- 44:35Speaker 2: i was, like for fuck, Sakes, jason so like looking up.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Synonyms i'm looking up and Then i'm LIKE i could
- 44:41Speaker 2: JUST i can't get out of my. Head i'm, like,
- 44:43Speaker 2: well that play was oh, GOD i don't say.
- 44:46Speaker 4: It, yes it was.

- 47:56Speaker 2: A little, Bit Robert redford could play a little, bit,
- 47:58Speaker 2: well oh, yeah one hundred. Percent you know you look

- 48:04Speaker 2: it's so. FUNNY i feel like the baseball, movies the
- 48:07Speaker 2: actors that play they're always. GOOD i feel like the
- 48:10Speaker 2: majority of the time they're very. Good Bull durham's another,
- 48:13Speaker 2: one but like the Natural Robert redford's. Great AND i
- 48:15Speaker 2: just find when it's the football, movies you can never
- 48:19Speaker 2: get a quarterback that can throw the goddamn. Football no
- 48:22Speaker 2: actor can actually throw a tight. Spiral it all looks
- 48:25Speaker 2: like it's like some, weird awkward. Angles so it's so.
- 48:27Speaker 2: Funny i'm, like why wouldn't You you're spending millions of,
- 48:30Speaker 2: dollars why wouldn't you just bring in a guy to
- 48:33Speaker 2: kind of teach them how to play the sport the
- 48:36Speaker 2: right way at least have the mechanics. Down but, Yeah
- 48:39Speaker 2: Robert redford a true, talent, amazing so many great, Movies,

- 49:13Speaker 1: have to mention him And Nick nolty came at twenty.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Fifteen it's not a great, film apparently it's a very good.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Book but it was an amiable, watch ninety seven, minutes
- 49:19Speaker 1: an easy, comedy kind of a grumpy old.
- 49:21Speaker 2: Men him And Nick, nolty two ACTORS i like a.

- 49:54Speaker 1: Right started THE nhl. Season we can't. Wait the trailer
- 49:57Speaker 1: was released this week for season two Of Face Off
- 49:59Speaker 1: inside THE, nhl The amazon series that got every hockey
- 50:03Speaker 1: fans attention last. Year looks like season two could be
- 50:05Speaker 1: just as good as season. One Sidney, crosby The Kachuck,
- 50:08Speaker 1: Brothers Ajre, copetar the, Aforementioned Miko ranton And Seth, Jarvis
- 50:12Speaker 1: Marc Andre, FLEURY. Jd you live the, game now you
- 50:14Speaker 1: live in the. Media how accent are you for this
- 50:16Speaker 1: series when it Returns october?
- 50:18Speaker 2: Fourth, well it's about goddamn, Time Sidney, Crosby, like how
- 50:21Speaker 2: long do you got to be the face of the
- 50:22Speaker 2: league before you get out and do Something jesus like
- 50:26Speaker 2: come on the biggest show it, well the biggest private
- 50:29Speaker 2: superstars in the.
- 50:29Speaker 1: League, Right, no you said any other?
- 50:31Speaker 2: Sport what DO i know?
- 50:32Speaker 1: About Patrick mahomes of The kelsey's or in THE nba
- 50:34Speaker 1: About Steph curry mc crossby's from the guy for.
- 50:36Speaker 2: Years you don't really know anything about the. Guy And
- 50:38Speaker 2: i'm all for it at honestly early in his, career
- 50:42Speaker 2: AND i understand what he was trying to. Do and
- 50:44Speaker 2: again it's it's up to. You you do what you
- 50:47Speaker 2: want to. Do but for the longest, time all the
- 50:51Speaker 2: young guys that came in the league had to follow his,
- 50:53Speaker 2: lead and it really DID i, THINK i don't want to,
- 50:57Speaker 2: SAY i mean it kind of stunted the league in
- 51:00Speaker 2: terms of like our media, presence and because you really
- 51:03Speaker 2: If sid's not in, it you, know you can't just
- 51:06Speaker 2: go out and, start you, know cheering and. Yelling and
- 51:10Speaker 2: you look at McDavid's made like an earnest effort to
- 51:12Speaker 2: kind of maybe be a little bit more personal and
- 51:14Speaker 2: be out in the media. Spotlight SO i think it's
- 51:17Speaker 2: a good job For sid to do. It I've i've
- 51:19Speaker 2: heard nothing but great things from, guys like he's an awesome,
- 51:22Speaker 2: guy he's really, funny AND i understand he wants to
- 51:25Speaker 2: be a private. MAN i get, it but there's also you,
- 51:28Speaker 2: know with great power comes great responsibility and nice you
- 51:32Speaker 2: are the face of the league for such a long.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Time you're ushering in the next generation and maybe that's
- 51:38Speaker 2: what THE nhl needed at that, time but it needs
- 51:41Speaker 2: people to be out. There you want to try to
- 51:43Speaker 2: build up the league because you, know the more built
- 51:46Speaker 2: up we, are the more media presence we, have the
- 51:49Speaker 2: more money everybody. MAKES i know everybody, goes, well it's
- 51:51Speaker 2: not about the, money but, yes those guys don't necessarily
- 51:54Speaker 2: need it because they're always going to make the top.
- 51:55Speaker 2: End but you got to think about the guys that
- 51:57Speaker 2: are playing fourth, line third, line that make. Minimum that
- 52:01Speaker 2: minimum jumps up a little. Bit so now you're helping
- 52:03Speaker 2: out the next era and next generation of young players
- 52:07Speaker 2: that are trying to make their their mark in the
- 52:09Speaker 2: league because you're just lifting them all up because of
- 52:11Speaker 2: the media stuff and. Sponsorship SO i, think goodbye, him
- 52:15Speaker 2: AND i think it's going to be. GREAT i can't
- 52:16Speaker 2: wait to watch, it or you, know watch a little
- 52:18Speaker 2: bit of it and then go turn To. Seinfeld but
- 52:20Speaker 2: fantastic to. That the fans are going to absolutely love.
- 52:23Speaker 1: It, well hopefully he's watched a couple of bus before
- 52:26Speaker 1: you get to a show about. Nothing by the, way
- 52:27Speaker 1: The kachuck brothers being followed At Four, nations which is.
- 52:30Speaker 1: FANTASTIC i mean going out in death Watching keith watching his.
- 52:32Speaker 2: Brothers what they did is going to be.
- 52:34Speaker 1: Awesome Spak, TRUCKS i. Agree if you're a hockey like A,
- 52:38Speaker 1: kaswog event ever knows The, kachucks they, wait well know anything.
- 52:41Speaker 2: Else, matthew you talk about getting out, There he's doing it,
- 52:45Speaker 2: well this is.
- 52:45Speaker 1: Great he's not gonna be in The panthers lamp Until
- 52:47Speaker 1: december do to a lower body, injury but that did
- 52:50Speaker 1: not stop him from making appearance of ESPN's College Game Is.
- 52:53Speaker 1: Saturday went this is as weak as it gets in
- 52:55Speaker 1: college football to two Time cup, champion appearing as the

- 53:26Speaker 2: was when McAfee jump jumped off the diving, board, right that's.
- 53:29Speaker 2: Right that was pretty. Funny oh, Man uh, yeah six and.
- 53:33Speaker 2: One i'm a little pissed he missed On Russell. Palooza
- 53:35Speaker 2: even Though RUSSELL plusa was an absolute. Flop what did
- 53:39Speaker 2: you like about? It it just wasn't all the hype build.
- 53:42Speaker 2: Up didn't love, it didn't love the, match you, KNOW
- 53:44Speaker 2: i just didn't love the way the matches played. Out
- 53:47Speaker 2: AND i just think it it they. Missed they they
- 53:50Speaker 2: swung and, missed and it's not always a, winner BUT
- 53:53Speaker 2: i expect more TO Ww if you're gonna call Some Russell,
- 53:56Speaker 2: palooza got to make sure it's you're, hitting you're hitting your.

- 54:10Speaker 2: Good it's it's good for the game and all that
