- 0:00Everywhere we look in nature, we see a similar process.
- 0:05A seed sprouts and a tiny seedling struggles to grow and
- 0:09survive. Eventually it grows, matures and
- 0:13comes into its adult strength. The animal Kingdom has a similar
- 0:18reality. The newborn animal has to
- 0:21develop its body, its vital strength, and whatever mental
- 0:25capacities it is intended to have over time, through embedded
- 0:30processes which we call instincts, through experience
- 0:34and through education. In some cases, this occurs in
- 0:39one lifetime, yet we see an evolving process that takes
- 0:43place across many lifetimes, stretching across millennia.
- 0:49It is useful to reflect on this process as we consider the
- 0:52mechanism and process that provides meaning to this
- 0:55development. If human life is restricted to 1
- 0:59brief lifetime, then very little significance in the universal
- 1:04creation can be attributed to any individual life.
- 1:08We might assign significance to the human race as it grows and
- 1:12matures through the action of individuals as they contribute
- 1:17to the larger human story. It even this seems to lack
- 1:22ultimate significance if there is not also a mechanism for some
- 1:26process that provides continuity across numerous successive
- 1:31lifetimes. Srioro Bindo has provided an
- 1:35extensive review of the various options in Rebirth and karma, in
- 1:40addition to the detail he provides in The Life Divine in
- 1:45chapters devoted specifically to this subject.
- 1:49The mechanism that provides meaning and continuity is the
- 1:52process of rebirth. The soul puts forth the psychic
- 1:56being, which begins as more or less a newborn seed of the
- 2:00spirit in each individual and then grows, matures and evolves,
- 2:07gaining strength and experience to eventually be able to not
- 2:11only influence the external body, life and mind, but gain
- 2:16mastery over them and turn them to the larger purposes of the
- 2:22divine creation. Sri Robindu observes quote.
- 2:28Moreover, the psychic being, the sole personality in US, does not
- 2:32emerge full grown and luminous. It evolves, passes through a
- 2:37slow development and formation. Its figure of being may be at
- 2:42first indistinct, and may afterwards remain for a long
- 2:46time weak and undeveloped, not impure but imperfect, For it
- 2:53rests its formation, its dynamic self, building on the power of
- 2:58soul that has been actually and more or less successfully
- 3:02against the resistance of the ignorance, and in conscience put
- 3:07forth in the evolution upon the surface.
- 3:11Its appearance is the sign of a sole emergence in nature, and if
- 3:15that emergence is as yet small and defective, the psychic
- 3:19personality also will be stunted or feeble.
- 3:23It is too, by the obscurity of our consciousness, separated
- 3:28from its inner reality, in imperfect communication with its
- 3:33own source in the depths of the being.
- 3:36For the road is as yet I'll built, easily obstructed, the
- 3:41wires often cut or crowded with communications of another kind,
- 3:46and proceeding from another origin.
- 3:49Its power to impress what it receives upon the outer
- 3:53instruments is also imperfect in its penury.
- 3:57It has for most things to rely on these instruments, and it
- 4:02forms its push to expression and action on their data, and not
- 4:06solely on the unerring perceptions of the psychic
- 4:10entity. In these conditions it cannot
- 4:14prevent the true psychic light from being diminished or
- 4:18distorted in the mind into a mere idea or opinion, the
- 4:22psychic feeling in the heart into a fallible emotion or mere
- 4:27sentiment. The psychic will to action in
- 4:30the life parts into a blind vital enthusiasm or a fervid
- 4:35excitement. It even accepts these
- 4:38mistranslations for want of something better, and tries to
- 4:42fulfill itself through them. For it is part of the work of
- 4:47the soul to influence mind and heart and vital being and turn
- 4:52their ideas, feelings, enthusiasms, dynamisms in the
- 4:57direction of what is divine and luminous.
- 5:01But this has to be done at first, imperfectly, slowly and
- 5:06with a mixture. As the psychic personality grows
- 5:10stronger, it begins to increase its communion with the psychic
- 5:14entity behind it and improve its communications with the surface.
- 5:19It can transmit its intimations to the mind and heart and life
- 5:24with a greater purity and force, for it is more able to exercise
- 5:28a strong control and react against false mixtures.
- 5:33Now more and more it makes itself distinctly felt as a
- 5:38power in the nature. But Even so, this evolution
- 5:42would be slow and long if left solely to the difficult
- 5:46automatic action of the evolutionary energy.
- 5:51It is only when man awakes to the knowledge of the soul and
- 5:54feels a need to bring it to the front and make it the master of
- 5:59his life in action, that a quicker conscious method of
- 6:03evolution intervenes and a psychic transformation becomes
- 6:08possible. End Quote Reference Sri
