- 0:43A blunt penknife the Doctor Who commentary podcast.
- 0:49Nathan? Hello, Joe.
- 0:50I don't get surgery in person very often, not very often at
- 0:53all. I mean, we did do this bill with
- 0:55episodes 1 & 2. Yeah.
- 0:56But we've waited a couple of days and now we're back with
- 0:58three and four. I've already started releasing
- 1:01one. Yeah, thanks so much.
- 1:02We have to do it. No one will ever hear the end
- 1:10not yet. Thoughts on the glass.
- 1:12Well, you know, I'm going to jump straight in.
- 1:14Okay with a question from Twitter because it's all Like
- 1:19the debate, this this thread who's that person is it's very
- 1:23delightful and handsome, man known as Todd bill because I've
- 1:26never heard of it. If not, I'll introduce you this
- 1:30happy, you know of watching Doctor Who and not enjoying it.
- 1:33Yes. And then going back and watching
- 1:35it again and really enjoying it. We call it the Todd experience.
- 1:39Awful, you never heard of it, huh?
- 1:42So Todd asks The Chronic history always sorry States.
- 1:46The Chronic hysteresis seen is magnificent.
- 1:48Yeah. Yep.
- 1:49True and the dodecahedron also true and make loss and Lexa.
- 1:54Yes, I don't have already said all those.
- 1:56Yeah, yeah, yeah, no. Right on all counts.
- 1:59What do you think about all the blond weeks?
- 2:01They're terrible. Obviously.
- 2:03And I think is it it's to make them look more science fiction
- 2:08e. Because I think they're sort of
- 2:10deliberately self-consciously a bit crap.
- 2:14And I think, when did we last have have this?
- 2:17We had the the The server team, remember that, if we call the
- 2:22terrible hat. Yeah, the test had terrible hat.
- 2:25He cozies. Yeah.
- 2:26And they, they had sort of very sallow skin, and they were
- 2:29extremely gay, remember that? Yes, look yeah.
- 2:32Yeah, yeah. And then, and there now have the
- 2:37seventh on the Dion's and I think it is.
- 2:39It's such a sort of cheesy science fiction, trobe that they
- 2:43decide. Do you remember when you
- 2:45obviously UFO exactly the same. Oh my.
- 2:48Yeah, although they're purple and a, what do the women in
- 2:55Iran? Those weeks for a reason.
- 2:56Don't, they don't purple week. So really are they protect
- 3:00against radiation or something and Moon Bay style?
- 3:03Something something have you seen what sort of wigs do they
- 3:08have wigs in? David Alex to those ladies have
- 3:14we think so they're they're all sort of blondes but they are
- 3:17waxy where she in today? Yeah, to suggest that they're
- 3:21all evil or plastic or the last time I saw this much sort of
- 3:28blond hair in a science fiction. Show that I watched with you in
- 3:32person. Yeah.
- 3:33What is he a cheese Justice? Which we're not doing the same
- 3:37thing? No, not whitewashing the show.
- 3:39No, I mean the area Effects mind, you all of the people.
- 3:43I mean, some of the some of the gas tax, the gas tax or
- 3:47ethnically diverse, aren't they? There's one.
- 3:50I think there is no trouble, man.
- 3:54I think so. Yeah, and maybe one sort of
- 3:56Mediterranean looking guy, so they're a little bit more.
- 3:59Be fair, that's not a doctor. Who never will?
- 4:02They are all equal. Well, the gas tax that they are
- 4:04not really evil, are they? I put another question for you
- 4:07now. Yeah, I just want to ask you,
- 4:09and I say, what point do you think Doctor, Who in the classic
- 4:13series dropped that, you know, all foreigners are the evil
- 4:18characters and was genuinely ethnically diverse.
- 4:22I actually don't think it quite makes it ever.
- 4:28I think Battlefield might content was shy young and bear
- 4:32are. Yeah, that's true.
- 4:34Actually, I just think it's kind of Like a caged diverse in that.
- 4:38Yeah, it's gender diverse and you've got Lavelle and you've
- 4:43got the big nièvre and staff, we just, you know, kind of what
- 4:46unit probably always ought to have been what on classic who
- 4:50the last series decisions about man.
- 4:55I mean, the previous year, they still have, you know, like the
- 4:59black blues musician and the wrapping black ringmaster and
- 5:04stuff. I mean, they're casting black
- 5:06Does. But putting them in sort of
- 5:08very, very stereotypical role on the show, is still incredibly
- 5:12wise? Yeah, yeah.
- 5:13And I think that modern show, obviously, he's very that than
- 5:18that, from 2005. And then, it takes a step even
- 5:22further in that direction. With Chris, chibnall who manages
- 5:26to get a diverse cast in front of a camera and a diverse sort
- 5:30of writing and directing team. And does something that the that
- 5:34was kind of long overdue in the show.
- 5:36Oh, I think trouble is, it was like switching off then.
- 5:40Well, yeah. I'm also going to ask mark .x
- 5:45question, work. A lovely, lovely, Mark.
- 5:47Datuk asks, is this story good, or is it just beyond our
- 5:51comprehension? That's a good question.
- 6:06Tried in fact and it's perhaps the one story that has the least
- 6:12kind of bid made in it. Do you think?
- 6:16I mean there are still scientists which we said was a
- 6:19feature of season 18 but they're kind of science.
- 6:22Yeah, they're cheesy scientists and it does do the bid made
- 6:27thing of blurring science and Magic because of the
- 6:29dodecahedron as we observed before is a platonic solid.
- 6:34And you know, it seems to provide Power Power simply
- 6:37through that property. As I said to you, I'm not until
- 6:41that's been stolen now. Yes, I need an adult.
- 6:44Yeah, I don't know how they're still functioning no.
- 6:47And I think there is a line of dialogue saying that they've got
- 6:50reserve powers and that there are K actually winding down.
- 6:54I must have missed. I think someone asked a question
- 6:55about that. Was, it was, you know, now that
- 7:00the dodecahedron has gone, how will the people of tie Gala
- 7:04survive? If you know, are they start?
- 7:07And just enough for one day till or 19 minutes for the rest of
- 7:11this place. Yeah yeah.
- 7:13Yeah. Well I think that they probably
- 7:14just start eating the Lush aggressive vegetation fair
- 7:18enough. Hello.
- 7:18Absolutely. Shh sighs.
- 7:20I think so too. Bid made actually says in the
- 7:24there's a wonderful special feature where the writers go and
- 7:27visit him at home. And honestly, he positions
- 7:30himself in his from room right in front of this bookcase with
- 7:34these extremely intelligent. A glass of wine is had so the
- 7:39focus is on the books. Yeah, which is amazing, but big
- 7:42new goes, you know, I know but I was just getting this season, I
- 7:45thought this was the one that got past, you know, that was
- 7:48season 17 esto, right? And that it was just a load of
- 7:51crap jokes and he's kind of bulb with him and says that I think
- 7:55there's no I went back and watched it and this is where I
- 7:57think he's mad because no, no I thought it was a damn fine piece
- 8:01of drama. It is fun though, I'm nervous.
- 8:06Reaper in policies. First impression of it was
- 8:09correct and that's why it's good.
- 8:10Yeah, yeah yeah. I love season 17 and like I
- 8:15don't think this is quite as clever as season 17 because you
- 8:18don't have to undress Adams directing so it's not as
- 8:21verbally clever but it is really sort of properly entertaining.
- 8:25Why do you think it's got a lot of tricks that it's putting out
- 8:28of the bag to keep you interested?
- 8:30I'm Luke. The doppelganger the angry
- 8:33plants, the Pirates. The hey how is it us?
- 8:35Lexa Yeah, well, quite and it still comes in short.
- 8:40Yes, I know. Yes.
- 8:42So we recording two episodes this morning and episode 3,
- 8:46looks like it's 21 minutes long, and I think and that's all you
- 8:49think nineties and they have pretty killer appraisers as
- 8:53well. What should we find out?
- 8:55Okay, I think we should, let's watch about a third of episode
- 9:002, followed by a few minutes that constitute the new material
- 9:05in episode 3. All right, shall I kind of say
- 9:08it again, please. Do five, four, three, two, one,
- 9:14and we're off. For the last time you get to
- 9:18push my buttons. You have to take the
- 9:20opportunity. Yeah, that's right terroristic.
- 9:23Says, you know, you guys, you can always tell when an episode
- 9:26was over wanting or under wanting because we prize.
- 9:30Well, if we're lucky material will go for a good five minutes.
- 9:41This is still. Yes, it is.
- 9:45Yeah, it's 19 where it goes twice weekly and it's tanking
- 9:49since 1990 going twice weekly. I was a Savvy move.
- 9:52Isn't that their ratings course or up to a 9 10 and 11 million
- 9:57NOK time. Fly, got 11 million for a show
- 9:59mom. This got about 4 million.
- 10:02Yeah yeah. There's no justice in the world.
- 10:04I know it's terrible. I actually the He's the saying,
- 10:07oh my, yeah, you're right. That was great.
- 10:11That beard. Remember we said where she gets
- 10:14confronted by brought a deck and she just does a big smile.
- 10:18She's absolutely the doctor. She's not at all scared.
- 10:22And then she just sort of ducks out of the way ticker tape.
- 10:25That's flowing. Yeah, I think it's the thing
- 10:28that I want to look at most other large plastic gray leaves.
- 10:34See that see them there. There in the background is these
- 10:38big plastic gray leaves everywhere.
- 10:40I've been down to poundland. Yeah, what is strange though, is
- 10:44job, see? John nathan-turner has been
- 10:45around for a while. He saw Creature from the pit
- 10:48being made, he knows they can do a bloody good jungle.
- 10:50Yeah. But in this sense or Kinder,
- 10:53it's like well I think the thing that really probably sells the
- 10:58jungle and Creature from the pit is that it's on film.
- 11:01It would obviously yellow very of that lion.
- 11:03She's seen too much and that was Cliffhanger.
- 11:07So you can see what our problem was in there.
- 11:08That long. No, I don't, you know, I love it
- 11:11when they do this when they build a bit of the ship.
- 11:14Yes, Horace. Yeah, they do the same thing in
- 11:17like Planet, a Daleks. But yeah, I'll ship and things
- 11:19like that. Yeah, works really well.
- 11:20That's not up to me. It's just an LC out the doors
- 11:23for a change. I don't, this is, is that
- 11:25marvelous bit where she talks about and I know they haven't
- 11:28gone running when I have so it already had a time, which Burnt
- 11:36up, a fair amount of screen time, and it's forgivable,
- 11:41because as Todd says, it's magnificent, it's really great
- 11:44fun. And the resolution is hilarious
- 11:48here, we get Ramana leading the gas tax around and around in
- 11:52circles just to burn off maybe running some
- 12:08I guess it looks counterclockwise if you're
- 12:10looking down from the North Pole and it looks clockwise if you're
- 12:12looking up from the or something, any chance to give
- 12:15the fellow Place Productions to scratch his head.
- 12:17It's rise. Now, diedrichs has his wig on
- 12:20crooked which I think is undermining.
- 12:24Now, I don't believe is his hair at all.
- 12:26I do like this scene though, this sort of thing, between
- 12:29diedrichs and what Karis means, prawn.
- 12:35Well, way from all The regulars and the dodecahedron has gone,
- 12:39and they're talking about what the dodecahedron is, and how
- 12:42they don't understand it. They think that's, yeah, that's
- 12:46really interesting. Well, and particularly since
- 12:50they're the ones who represent, you know, logic, you know, they
- 12:55devise their models of the World, by observing it in
- 12:59controlled ways and they say the dodecahedron is an artifact.
- 13:05That someone's He'd and Lexus has famously it descended from
- 13:14and say, but neither of those easy officer is no, I'm not,
- 13:19but, but the seventh don't have a better answer.
- 13:23That's the problem. They don't have a better artist
- 13:25leave alone. What it is, always just magic.
- 13:27Go, it would spoil it to learn what do you think?
- 13:30But then the fact that you have one side giving, you know,
- 13:34belief explanation and the other side.
- 13:36Acknowledging that. Oh yeah, we don't know even
- 13:39science. Can't tell us what if yeah.
- 13:41Yeah, yeah. So that so it's kind of like
- 13:44they're epistemology doesn't give them any advantages.
- 13:47This here are they are literally walking around in a circle.
- 13:50Yeah, this is a sort of thing bloody Moffitt.
- 13:52We're doing it a literal, you know.
- 13:54Yeah. I'm wasting going around.
- 13:56Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:58Ooh, cheeky babies. Well, particularly since it's
- 14:01our second Circle in two episodes you know we have the
- 14:04timeline Oh, here she is. Jacqueline, heels back.
- 14:10Yeah, it's like looking for a marketing.
- 14:13So we lose our, you know, I don't think she goes for goes
- 14:17until for a terrible be oscillation.
- 14:19I'll head out, right? I think some of the directions
- 14:22here, but that be there, that how action sequence on her deaf.
- 14:25Yeah, talk about signposted. No, it's terrible.
- 14:28It is just, we want to get her out of the way and I think, I
- 14:31think I said maybe an hour flight through entirety episode.
- 14:35I said that So I thought, what would have been more interesting
- 14:40would be to have diedrichs and Lexa?
- 14:47After now, they have to work together to build all that a
- 14:50society logical complete. That's how it should be.
- 14:54I don't religion, have to find a way to yeah.
- 14:56Today, you know, they're not going to persuade one another
- 15:01How did I solve it in mysterious planet?
- 15:04Again, obviously, you've got science.
- 15:05The robot you've got sort of the traditionalist.
- 15:09Yeah, we'll just blows up like a robot, your Styles.
- 15:11Yeah, the red. Dyes is there are still around
- 15:14at that point, the backlight conversa and it explodes.
- 15:17Oh there it is rotation revolving, brought a deck sort
- 15:22of nods his head as if you under.
- 15:23Yeah, I think we're gonna shake. You said that Freddie
- 15:28whatever-his-name-is who plays product Is absolutely superb.
- 15:33He's so great. It just makes the pain even
- 15:35better. Yeah.
- 15:37Oh, this is some, these sequence of Tom van in these sort of dark
- 15:41caves with weird shoes with what about those plants in the shoe
- 15:45box. There is a filter oxygen, you
- 15:48know, maybe. But that's a good effect.
- 15:51I like that. Yeah man.
- 15:52Trying to tear free of me gloss and then he sort of gently
- 15:56pulling him in but no, don't make it don't show one emotion.
- 15:59No, no, well, Well, he's the car will put his eye out.
- 16:03He smiled Madonna's going for the same problem moment is that
- 16:09is time I really like that and then you every time they let Tom
- 16:18do evil. I think about Invasion or tired
- 16:22episodes 1 & 2. Yeah, you know, he can bring us
- 16:25sense of Stillness or I didn't fuck it up.
- 16:28Like in Armageddon factor, six or Sherlock?
- 16:30His death must be a joke. All right.
- 16:32Say yeah, he's bad. If you are not listening I can
- 16:35make him your son thing when he does.
- 16:37He does a bit of that here. Looks like the weight after
- 16:41that. I think about this about that.
- 16:43No. The sooner we get us back to the
- 16:44white Guardian. The better vocal said in
- 16:49contrast to last. We super charming.
- 16:51And yes, and he is like he's his proof that he didn't steal.
- 16:56The debit. Dodecahedron was smiling and
- 16:58saying, well I don't do that sort of thing.
- 17:00Which I think is terrific. He's turn Moffat dollar.
- 17:02It's a good old-fashioned. Doppelganger.
- 17:06Thanks Tom. We know what?
- 17:08Sort of plot win it all? This is the sequence I was
- 17:10telling you about look. Yeah.
- 17:12Puts his hand on his shoulder and then just lose her to the
- 17:16shadows and I think we think he's probably gonna die at this
- 17:22point. Don't wait.
- 17:22Because there's no indication. There's always.
- 17:25Yeah. Yeah.
- 17:26And she's just terrified. That's why she's moving.
- 17:29She's sort of pulling back a bit but she's Not resisting that
- 17:31much. This was a late VHS receipt.
- 17:33I have harnessing this early, young white, scared me.
- 17:38Well, you know, I was quite impressionable.
- 17:42That's right faster. I think we should acknowledge.
- 17:48You don't struggle a little. Yeah, he does, he's good.
- 17:51Yeah, he does throw like a good act as a good acts.
- 17:53I was like oh no like heart. No.
- 17:55Yeah, it's a good acts. Well, I'd like, I didn't really
- 17:57know who he was, but it was watching the, the behind the
- 18:01sofa, and having everyone kind of impress him with under Downs
- 18:05with us, the hill. Yeah.
- 18:09And so she why does she think it's the doctor?
- 18:11Oh no, he's explaining. I am Meg.
- 18:16Wasson comes the music that's in this game too long.
- 18:24Now that it can pull off a line like I am, it was one of them is
- 18:29questions. One of those questions was
- 18:31about. You have we have like two
- 18:34planets revolving around the Sun that we tie Gala and zall for
- 18:38fuhrer. Iraq.
- 18:39You can peaking at the question, is that, once the system, I
- 18:42can't remember any way the the, and then it's, they do, give the
- 18:50name of the system, I can't remember.
- 18:53Can both of them have evolved, you know, plant life.
- 18:59I don't do they. Yeah, well because Aaron's
- 19:03terrified. You only have to listen to my
- 19:06normal. Be praised episode where I asked
- 19:08Jack Shanahan how the motto, how necklace could possibly come to
- 19:12be and he spins a delightful yarn about mr.
- 19:14And mrs. McLaughlin.
- 19:16Well, ho mingling. I mean he's the last of the
- 19:19Sulphur theorems is he says there.
- 19:21And so I guess You know that planet I don't know.
- 19:25Whatever he reminds me of their armas from Skin of Evil on the
- 19:29desert Planet. Yeah.
- 19:33Yeah. I think this was the
- 19:34inspiration. No.
- 19:36Well it happened afterwards for a star and this is better.
- 19:39Yeah. So so I guess they're just two
- 19:42planets in the Goldilocks. I not?
- 19:44They this is like an area in a solar system where I don't know.
- 19:48Like it's I actually kind of like that because it is Sort of
- 19:54cheesy science fiction and stuff, but just having the two
- 19:57planets, I mean, I think Bob Holmes discovers this that it
- 20:00makes it as sort of a bit more reach, you know.
- 20:03The it's not just we all just basically within one square mile
- 20:10on one planet. There are two planets and
- 20:12they're kind of different from one another.
- 20:14We get to see them in the same thing.
- 20:15I kind of like that, I guess I was a nerdy kid, who'd, like
- 20:19astronomy. And so that made it fun and
- 20:22you've got such bold stroke. With the gray.
- 20:25Hang on the river with the Dion's the day on the servants
- 20:29and the gas tax. Yeah.
- 20:31But you're basically got all your scenes.
- 20:33Yeah mixture. And I was carrying dressing
- 20:40gowns do it. Tom is going to be sacrificed at
- 20:45the end of this episode. Oh yeah, piece on this Stone
- 20:48which is something that happens from quite handsome.
- 20:49An underworld happens to him in stones of blood.
- 20:53I think that there's a Sacramento.
- 20:55Is there a sacrifice in mask of mandragora?
- 21:00There is a Sarah gets dragged off.
- 21:03What's a good way? It's sedately.
- 21:04Yes, sir. I I don't know as well, I don't
- 21:09remember. You are kidding me, she's facing
- 21:12the knife, sibylline Sisterhood. Yeah, yeah, yeah I actually it
- 21:18actually, she needed me. I have to say because I was
- 21:21really sick of these Sacrifices, I think at this point I declared
- 21:27a moratorium and there were to be no more human sacrifices in
- 21:31Doctor Who and I think you've closed up an Avenue of
- 21:34Storytelling, then I'm gonna it's not a great Avenue that has
- 21:38been stripped. My I do think the execution in
- 21:42this one is really good though. Yeah, because it's so simple.
- 21:45Ways of blame is a row. Yeah.
- 21:47Yeah music yeah. Music religious sort of
- 21:52ethereal. Style music and then possibly
- 22:00look scared, but he can't undermine it all by, you know,
- 22:04being stupid. And so he's kind of this sort
- 22:07of. It's almost like he's trying to
- 22:09get out of the stones way even though he's sort of tied to the
- 22:12thing. She's literally, the doctor
- 22:14here, isn't she? Yeah, I never said, she was just
- 22:17running this ragtag bunch of pirates.
- 22:20I'm Mary Dollars around this planet but this is what the dogs
- 22:23were. Yes, goes, no, I don't have to
- 22:26hell. We go.
- 22:29What is that those tendrils? Where is it backwards?
- 22:32I think it's backwards. The way that they was funny, is
- 22:36General, Kroger the actor. He just can't be bothered with
- 22:38anything. No, not grabbed his army sort of
- 22:40looking at. Yeah, I'm an actor.
- 22:42I'm not gonna fucking believe this.
- 23:20She does a great job of she's pretty good.
- 23:23Banging on the door going. Let me in acting, isn't she?
- 23:26That's her thing. She's robbed, marvelous at all.
- 23:28I think she's watching that Destiny of the Daleks every day.
- 23:31One way they end of episode one, so good.
- 23:35And people mock that bit where she's facing the Daleks and
- 23:37she's going, you know, I don't know the answer.
- 23:40She's got, she's almost two years, it's really good and it's
- 23:43she's pathetic. No, no, they're supposed to be
- 23:45clear the darling, you know? Yeah, it may cost is going to be
- 23:50off. Now, with cat stay here with
- 23:51her. Can't remember Our own over the
- 23:55Earth, things about to distract him.
- 23:56I think it's linked to you again.
- 24:01I think that poor, he pops up like this.
- 24:07It was probably a couple of days work.
- 24:12Yeah, it just terrifies me to think you know, this could have
- 24:14been make loss along now. We don't know.
- 24:16That's, there's so many In and Out of Doors in episode 4.
- 24:19The we never quite managed to keep track of Who's Who so this
- 24:21is presumably happening live and being done in camera, right?
- 24:25And he's off in front of a black curtain or something.
- 24:28I think they do a reasonable job.
- 24:31Like, I'm selling that with you gotta do is issues, like, it's
- 24:34not gonna be like it is man convincingly pulling his way out
- 24:38of my closet is just spell it out to the kids.
- 24:39Yeah. Yeah.
- 24:40Charlie get away. Yeah, we have to tell But I
- 24:42think they do a reasonable job. Yeah, I was this is always a bit
- 24:45awkward now and they have to try and Bash down this.
- 24:48Yeah, yeah, even see you later. Particularly since the actors
- 24:50are all slowing down so that the brand doesn't hit the door to,
- 24:54huh? Like they run up and then slow,
- 24:56tar him. That was good.
- 24:58I like that. It keeps the camera on the door.
- 25:00Yes, being smashed. Yeah.
- 25:01Yeah. It's all a bit busy.
- 25:07Yes. Now, is that?
- 25:08Maybe that's the idea again does.
- 25:09All that guy. Got shot at stage.
- 25:12Look at that big rubber rubber thing.
- 25:16I guess it must be polystyrene. There's a thing about gimp mask
- 25:20and Pollock, black polished. But yeah, I love them and say,
- 25:24thing up here. Yeah, he's very handsome and
- 25:35very full trousers, really, not as follows.
- 25:40He's worth going back to. And he said, who are you Joe?
- 25:50This is our way of saying that not great deals occurring right
- 25:53now. There's a lot of running around
- 25:54and best packages of Doctor Who, oh, okay, and we've okay.
- 26:00So is this the doctor or that's big boss so they go off with.
- 26:04Make laws. Are you failed by the way?
- 26:06He's a tiny golden hardboard. Replica of the dodecahedron
- 26:10which oh my God. Look at it.
- 26:12From the gift shop, a lot of times and he's this the
- 26:36Cliffhanger, it is. Yeah, is it.
- 26:38So when the music starts, screaming, death, death Death,
- 26:41there we go. And it's absolutely panicked Tom
- 26:44which is I still think it's a pretty good clip.
- 26:48Wait, did these men all have long plaits?
- 26:50Is that what's happening here or fabulous white hair because
- 26:55otherwise they look like you from encounter at farpoint.
- 26:58They do wrong. They've got that look.
- 27:01But the that's June. Hudson is not giving them big
- 27:04long right. In fact, she's a maniac,
- 27:07enhanced and hacking quatre moment.
- 27:09No end. If she did, she would imagine It
- 27:12look how like she's a religious Maniac obviously, but there's a
- 27:16warmth in her performance, in a smile behind it.
- 27:20Like she I think, like, I think part of the problem perhaps is
- 27:26that she's too good and that we should be cheering for Lexus
- 27:30death. Because she's yeah, yes.
- 27:32But we can't do penalize supposed to like her at all?
- 27:35No, but we do and I think we do. Is it because it's Barber
- 27:38though? No, I think well yes obviously
- 27:41but like I first saw this. I had no idea who she was.
- 27:45And you still like the carrot. Yeah.
- 27:46Because there's a real warmth to her.
- 27:48She says everything with a smile, you know, disaster likes
- 27:51her, she doesn't ask unreasonable questions.
- 27:55Remember. She's the one who says, well
- 27:56either did descend. If the dodecahedron didn't
- 27:59descend from heaven, where did it come?
- 28:02Where where? And they can't answer that
- 28:06question. You know, but then they can
- 28:08offer it with science either. No, but that's what I'm saying.
- 28:11They Can't answer it, the seventh can ask answer, they
- 28:14dismiss her Theory, but they haven't got a competing Theory,
- 28:18you know, because she she is literally the villain.
- 28:20Now, she's prostrating to the heavier about to flatten.
- 28:23Tom Baker. Yeah.
- 28:25So maybe she has to pay for that but I think in the show as it
- 28:28turns out given the acting and her choices and things, it would
- 28:32have been much more interesting to have those two sides.
- 28:37You know, have to, you know, they left to make an
- 28:41accommodation to we go. We don't go back to.
- 28:44No, never. And I said, you know, that's why
- 28:45this doesn't feel like a yeah. I mean, because we don't really
- 28:49care what happens? Yeah, they've hit they give it
- 28:51all the sort of Timeless. Exposition of all this all
- 28:54happened in the past. Yeah, but we don't care enough
- 28:56to know to see how it all went up.
- 28:58Yeah, that's real Karis and diedrichs by a man can go of it.
- 29:03We even had that in Halls of 91. When they go off to the Wedding,
- 29:06March was Yeah hika. It's something not just on the
- 29:12scanner but it's something. I do think that there's
- 29:17something like the physical thing of them burn your rope is
- 29:20pretty great. And I don't know if you notice
- 29:22there was a ceiling in that set and as yes thing that I love
- 29:26about late 80s, late 70s, early 80s is a ceilings for edible
- 29:35ceilings in. In the letter Hive that the
- 29:39sound Echoes of so that you feel like you're in an enclosed
- 29:42space, that's one of the great things about you don't.
- 29:45Feel like you're in a studio for feel like I'm winning at life.
- 29:48You know, when I know what day is it today?
- 29:51No idea that if do I but a late afternoon, you and me are
- 29:54talking about the ceilings of Mentor we should do a whole
- 29:58podcast on it well and then we could progress into the windows
- 30:01when they appear in looking at that as shares their life.
- 30:05Some of our we got to feed for that I cuz they were charting
- 30:09that Dreadful. Sofia that is fantastic
- 30:11conversation pit. Sophia yeah.
- 30:15The second place. Yes.
- 30:16So yeah. Yeah.
- 30:18I think it does turn up and other things as well.
- 30:20What is the sight of that? Okay, I'm not saying the past.
- 30:22Now you know I said about seeing the spaceship in the jungle.
- 30:27Yeah and then you see the interior of the space ship with
- 30:30the jungle outside. Yeah.
- 30:32Just little details like that. I'm convinced that they're
- 30:35they're, you know, you're seeing if we both put well they don't
- 30:38do this very often, you know. I think that I put this much for
- 30:42into giving you a sense of place usually like time. /.
- 30:45It's just a matted room. Yes.
- 30:47So for in it. Yeah, that'll do.
- 30:49So one of the things, one of the things that I think that the
- 30:53Leisure Hive does particularly well, is to create a sense of
- 30:57that space. Hmm, you know, and it's partly
- 31:00because there's a sort of consistent design.
- 31:03It's partly because we see people moving from place to
- 31:06place. We refer to particular rooms,
- 31:09there's ceilings to the sets, the the, you know, the
- 31:13conference room. Sounds different The room with
- 31:15the generator and and so on you go from outside material.
- 31:20We're or window to me inside. Yeah.
- 31:23But you ever the think he sort of tinkertoy in perak role that
- 31:27sort of oil rig? Yeah the bathtub.
- 31:30Yeah. And it looks like a signatory.
- 31:32Well you can pay that to those establishing shot.
- 31:34Yeah that's kind of a and that's right.
- 31:37Vastly you know that's not a technologically more impressive.
- 31:40Never ceases whateley a season and a half away.
- 31:43Yeah it's just the direction. This I think in context felt
- 31:47like a step backwards because it isn't as striking, it's not as
- 31:51beautifully just as stylishly directed as the Leisure Hive.
- 31:55But I still think it is the new look.
- 31:58It doesn't look like it's from season 17 as people claim.
- 32:02I do. Wonder if there's a bit of an
- 32:03ask in this though, is quite an ambitious.
- 32:05It what is asking for the jungle all the same?
- 32:07Yeah, other planet. The thing rising up out of the
- 32:10day's. Yeah, all of that stuff.
- 32:12You would, you know, they were you remember the power?
- 32:15Complex. The just seemed for a window,
- 32:18isn't it? Well, I think it's seen on the
- 32:20Tardis scanner in Norms of nimonic printed circuits.
- 32:24Yeah. Well, it's very similar to the
- 32:26design of the The Hive in the Leisure Hive.
- 32:28I think. But it's the execution.
- 32:31Yeah. Yeah.
- 32:32Just how it's directed and here, you've got model work, which is
- 32:35vastly more ambitious and vastly more interesting.
- 32:38And what happens? Next is you have full circle
- 32:41that an astonishingly. Good location work.
- 32:44Yeah. And the sets in that sets a
- 32:46really good fit with Peter greenaway time them.
- 32:48And the model of the, the Starliner looks pretty great and
- 32:51he's weird. It's not just, you know, just
- 32:53the usual spaceship. Mmm?
- 32:56Yeah, Yeah. And then you've got unbelievably
- 32:59piece of Moffat coming in in State of Decay.
- 33:01Yeah, I'm doing really interesting visuals.
- 33:04Yeah. But the quadrille, you know?
- 33:06Yeah, it's an exposition scene but we're going to dance around
- 33:09the room. Yeah.
- 33:10You know that I mean that has models Work depicting things
- 33:16that we haven't really seen. Tried before is a bit polish it.
- 33:20Yeah, yeah, yeah that's it. Yeah, that's right.
- 33:23And then you got Warriors gate. Well yeah, let's leave it there.
- 33:26Yeah, give us an and the model work I'll never get above all
- 33:29images in that story. Well, I'm gonna out its now with
- 33:34another question. Okay, if you don't mind, John
- 33:37Hall asked is tie gala where Carol channing's weeks when when
- 33:42they died. I actually think it's possible
- 33:44to care. All chanting got her wigs as a
- 33:48Job. Lot.
- 33:48From this production. He's Carol Channing.
- 33:51She's a famous singer in America and a comedian.
- 33:57Does she look like yeah, yeah, D, obviously, she's really
- 34:02funny. I'll show you some YouTube
- 34:04video. Interesting to model her look on
- 34:06that. John Hall.
- 34:07Also asked, do you think big finish missed a golden
- 34:09opportunity by not having set a fourth dr.
- 34:12Romano canine Earthling stories. I'll just On for goodness sake.
- 34:16They've done enough of this set between McLaughlin full circle,
- 34:19as they try to return the hapless human to his wife home
- 34:22before dinner. Do you know, I already replied
- 34:25to this on Twitter and I said I would But you have, I would buy
- 34:29the machine. I want that box set.
- 34:33If I say it three times, I'll say to you and John, you are
- 34:36responsible. This is why everything Bring It
- 34:43On.
