- 1:01Speaker 2: or computer by subscribing wherever you get your podcasts. It's
- 1:05Speaker 2: the greatest thing since randomly seeing Joe Flacco references on Veep.
- 1:13Speaker 2: HBO recently ran a Veep marathon. That's the show where
- 1:16Speaker 2: Julia Louis Dreyfuss aka Elaine from Seinfeld plays a bumbling,
- 1:22Speaker 2: scheming and conniving vice president who is surrounded by equally bumbling,
- 1:27Speaker 2: scheming and conniving staff members. I thought the show was hysterical,
- 1:33Speaker 2: so when HBO recently replayed all seven seasons, I wound
- 1:37Speaker 2: up catching a few episodes, including one where Vice President
- 1:40Speaker 2: Selina Meyer makes two references to Joe Flacco. The gist
- 1:45Speaker 2: is that the vice president is going on Meet the
- 1:47Speaker 2: Press and wants to appeal to regular folks, so her
- 1:52Speaker 2: staff convinces her that she should talk about football. They
- 1:56Speaker 2: remind her that she's supposedly a Baltimore fan, so she
- 2:01Speaker 2: goes on TV and expresses her confidence in Joe Flacco
- 2:05Speaker 2: since he was the Ravens quarterback at the time. She
- 2:09Speaker 2: knew the sports.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Yes, we're not nervous at all with Flacco.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Forget about it.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I'll bet you a beer that we win by.
- 2:16Speaker 2: A TV I asked Joe Flacco about it in the
- 2:19Speaker 2: locker room this week, and he said he's aware of
- 2:21Speaker 2: the name drop, but has never.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Watched the show.
- 2:25Speaker 2: He should, especially season one, episode four. Now let's get
- 2:31Speaker 2: to the radio replays from Sunday's game in the steel City.
- 2:36Speaker 2: In a normal year, the first place team in the
- 2:38Speaker 2: AFC North would reach mid November with one of the
- 2:41Speaker 2: best records in the NFL.
- 2:43Speaker 1: But this is not a normal year.
- 2:47Speaker 2: The first place Steelers are just five and four and
- 2:49Speaker 2: the Bengals are still in the hunt at three and six. Today,
- 2:54Speaker 2: Cincinnati looks to sweep Pittsburgh to pull within one game
- 2:59Speaker 2: a first and it is time for.
- 3:01Speaker 1: The Big Skin to fly.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Here at Akrishore Stadium and second and nine at the
- 3:06Speaker 2: Cincinnati eleven shotgun Snap Rogers from the pocket screens it
- 3:09Speaker 2: left caught by Gainwell running away from Barrett Carter, and
- 3:13Speaker 2: he launches himself over the pylon into the end zone
- 3:16Speaker 2: for an eleven yard touchdown. Flacco changing the play as
- 3:20Speaker 2: he touches both sides of his helmet and backs up
- 3:23Speaker 2: into the shotgun.
- 3:24Speaker 1: TODs Brooks to his left.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Flacco catches the forty year old QB for the five
- 3:28Speaker 2: step drop penalty flag down. Flacco throws it deep, caught
- 3:33Speaker 2: at the seven. T Higgins runs into the end zone,
- 3:36Speaker 2: but there's a penalty flag in the offensive backfield.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Looks like it's holding against Pittsburgh.
- 3:42Speaker 2: The Bengals are celebrating so that's going to be a
- 3:45Speaker 2: twenty eight yard touchdown pass as the faith second and
- 3:48Speaker 2: ten low snap handled by Rogers. Now he's pressured, goes backward,
- 3:52Speaker 2: pump fakes and gets sacked Oo Miles Murphy and bj
- 3:57Speaker 2: Hill combining for the sack at the thirty on eleven
- 4:01Speaker 2: yard loss. Chris Boswell into attempt a twenty five yard
- 4:04Speaker 2: field goal from the left hash. He swings the right leg,
- 4:07Speaker 2: his kick is up. It is good, and the Pittsburgh
- 4:10Speaker 2: Steelers have a ten to six lead. With ten seconds
- 4:14Speaker 2: left in the half. Flacco under center, Chase Brown lined
- 4:18Speaker 2: up behind him. Flacco hands it off big hole up
- 4:20Speaker 2: the middle, sprinting between the hash marks, now angling toward
- 4:23Speaker 2: the near sideline at the fifty Steelers forty. Chase Brown
- 4:26Speaker 2: stepped out of bounds around the forty. So the first
- 4:30Speaker 2: play of the third quarter is a huge run. Chase
- 4:34Speaker 2: goes out of bounds at the Pittsburgh forty.
- 4:36Speaker 1: One yard line.
- 4:37Speaker 2: How about thirty five yards on a run for Chase Brown.
- 4:41Speaker 2: This will be a forty three yard try into the
- 4:43Speaker 2: open end of the stadium at Akroshore Stadium, notoriously difficult
- 4:48Speaker 2: for NFL kickers. Forty three yards away on a windy day.
- 4:52Speaker 2: From the right, Hash Rico ready for the snap, catches
- 4:55Speaker 2: a high one, gets the ball down. The kick is
- 4:57Speaker 2: up and it is good yes for Evan McPherson. He
- 5:02Speaker 2: makes it from forty three yards away and Cincinnati is
- 5:05Speaker 2: pulled back within one third down and nine at the
- 5:09Speaker 2: thirty five of Pittsburgh.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Here comes a blitz.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Flaco throws opn the medal intercepted at the thirty yard line.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Tugger running it back near sideline at the thirty cuts
- 5:19Speaker 2: back to the twenty five twenty ten five touchdown Pittsburgh
- 5:25Speaker 2: seventy two yards On the run back, flack Go threw
- 5:29Speaker 2: it right to Kyle Dugger and he runs it back
- 5:34Speaker 2: for his third career pick six. Wagner, the rookie long snapper,
- 5:38Speaker 2: ready to fire it back to Ryan Rico. The snap
- 5:41Speaker 2: is good. Here comes the right footed kick on its
- 5:45Speaker 2: way and good yeah. Evan McPherson drilled it into the
- 5:51Speaker 2: wind from forty eight yards out and the Bengals make
- 5:54Speaker 2: it a one score game. They're down by eight with
- 5:58Speaker 2: ninety one to go. Then goal from the five Rudolph
- 6:01Speaker 2: throws it is caught by Gainwell, touchdown. Pittsburgh Orrin Burks
- 6:07Speaker 2: greeted him around the two, but Gainwell crouched down low.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Burks failed to make the tackle.
- 6:12Speaker 2: And Kenneth Gainwell has his second touchdown catch of the game.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Bengals have it at their own twenty nine. They have
- 6:18Speaker 2: scored twelve points today. They had been averaging thirty two
- 6:22Speaker 2: with Joe Flacco at quarterback. He catches a shot gun
- 6:25Speaker 2: Snappy's back to throw, fires to the right, caught it
- 6:28Speaker 2: the twenty eight by Noah Fant and the Bengals tight
- 6:31Speaker 2: end loses the ball scooped up by Pierre running down
- 6:34Speaker 2: the far sideline. He goes into the end zone for
- 6:37Speaker 2: a Pittsburgh touchdown.
- 6:39Speaker 5: And he does a front flip to celebrate that touchdown.
- 6:44Speaker 5: He took off the goal line and did a gymnastic
- 6:48Speaker 5: move that front flip in full football equipment. It almost
- 6:52Speaker 5: stuck the landing.
- 6:53Speaker 1: The Steelers taking knee.
- 6:54Speaker 2: The final few seconds run off the clock and it
- 6:57Speaker 2: is a split in this run. I will read this
- 7:00Speaker 2: year each home team winning, the Bengals winning thirty three
- 7:04Speaker 2: thirty one at home and the Steelers winning thirty four
- 7:07Speaker 2: to twelve. Here at Akroshore Stadium. Last month, when the
- 7:12Speaker 2: Bengals beat the Steelers in Cincinnati. Joe Flacco threw for
- 7:15Speaker 2: more than three hundred and thirty yards and three touchdowns
- 7:19Speaker 2: and completed sixteen passes to Jamar Chase Pittsburgh was not
- 7:24Speaker 2: about to let that happen again. They took away the short,
- 7:28Speaker 2: easy passes to Jamar and kept a safety on his
- 7:31Speaker 2: side for anything longer. He was targeted ten times and
- 7:35Speaker 2: finished with three catches for thirty yards. Flacco went twenty
- 7:39Speaker 2: three for forty for one hundred and ninety nine yards,
- 7:42Speaker 2: with one touchdown, one pick six, and a passer rating
- 7:46Speaker 2: of sixty eight point six.
- 7:49Speaker 6: These games, you know they are going to be battles,
- 7:51Speaker 6: and even though this looks like a lot, it looks
- 7:55Speaker 6: really bad. It's one of those typical games that you
- 7:58Speaker 6: come playing here all this sudden it breaks loose and
- 8:01Speaker 6: it goes the other way. But this you felt it today.
- 8:05Speaker 6: It was a hard, physical game. You knew they were
- 8:09Speaker 6: going to make it tough, tough for it for us,
- 8:11Speaker 6: and we just didn't come through. In those couple of
- 8:13Speaker 6: little moments. You know, they got two touchdowns on defense
- 8:19Speaker 6: and got everybody excited and were able to pin their
- 8:22Speaker 6: ears back and do their thing. And you know, that's
- 8:25Speaker 6: what this game comes down to. It's it's one or
- 8:28Speaker 6: two plays that you can look back on, and obviously
- 8:32Speaker 6: there's more than that and just the consistency of it,
- 8:34Speaker 6: but there's always those plays. And it comes down to
- 8:37Speaker 6: just playing and winning football and and kind of waiting
- 8:40Speaker 6: for your opportunity and you know, not letting not letting
- 8:44Speaker 6: yourself get too far out ahead of yourself and trying
- 8:47Speaker 6: to make things happen when they're not going to. And
- 8:49Speaker 6: I don't really think we were doing that today, but
- 8:51Speaker 6: we obviously, you know, just we weren't able to wait, wait, wait,
- 8:55Speaker 6: wait and strike. We we made mistakes and they capitalized.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Chasero ran for ninety nine yards and added twenty eight
- 9:02Speaker 2: receiving It's his fourth straight game with one hundred or
- 9:05Speaker 2: more scrimmage yards, but that didn't help the Bengals score
- 9:09Speaker 2: many points. After averaging thirty two plus in Flaco's first
- 9:13Speaker 2: four starts, the Bengals only scored twelve on Sunday. As
- 9:17Speaker 2: a result, their chances of winning the AFC North are slim.
- 9:21Speaker 6: Listen to and we're halfway through the season. Basically it's
- 9:25Speaker 6: a little bit more now, but it really is so
- 9:28Speaker 6: tough to look at it that way. I think it's
- 9:30Speaker 6: easy to get caught up in that stuff. I really
- 9:34Speaker 6: try to remove myself from those situations and just go
- 9:36Speaker 6: play football. And I think if you do that, that's
- 9:40Speaker 6: when you give yourself the best chance to be in
- 9:41Speaker 6: the best position you want. Obviously, that's there lingering and
- 9:45Speaker 6: you know, the opportunity and all that stuff, but you
- 9:48Speaker 6: got to try to avoid getting caught up in those things.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Now, let's get to the defense. For much of the game,
- 9:54Speaker 2: the Bengals d played as well as it has at
- 9:57Speaker 2: any point this season. After Pittsburgh's scored on its opening drive,
- 10:01Speaker 2: the Bengals forced three straight punts and didn't allow the
- 10:04Speaker 2: Steelers to cross the fifty. But on the final drive
- 10:08Speaker 2: of the half, two roughing the passer penalties helped Pittsburgh
- 10:12Speaker 2: kick a field goal to take a ten to six lead.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Still you'll take it.
- 10:17Speaker 2: But in the second half, with Mason Rudolph in at
- 10:20Speaker 2: quarterback after Aaron Rodgers hurt his wrist, the Bengals allowed
- 10:24Speaker 2: the Steelers to pick up first downs on third and eleven,
- 10:28Speaker 2: third and seventeen, and third and eleven again. In each case,
- 10:33Speaker 2: Pittsburgh threw a short pass and the Bengals were not
- 10:37Speaker 2: able to close on the receiver and tackle him short
- 10:40Speaker 2: of the sticks. Rogers and Rudolph combined for two hundred
- 10:43Speaker 2: and forty three yards passing. Two hundred and twenty five
- 10:47Speaker 2: of those yards came after the catch. That's ninety three percent.
- 10:53Speaker 2: The Steelers weren't targeting the Bengals cornerbacks. They were going
- 10:57Speaker 2: after the linebackers and safeties over and over and over again.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Here's rookie Barrett Carter.
- 11:06Speaker 7: We just got to get eleven half to the ball
- 11:08Speaker 7: and just find a way to get get get the
- 11:11Speaker 7: guy down, whoever it is. We're in great play calls.
- 11:15Speaker 7: Play calls setting us up for success. So for us
- 11:17Speaker 7: as a defense, we just gotta get eleven half to
- 11:19Speaker 7: the ball and just find a way to get off
- 11:21Speaker 7: the field. You know, it may not look pretty all
- 11:23Speaker 7: the time, but just we just gotta.
- 11:25Speaker 8: Find a way. Washington a big tight end, he catches
- 11:27Speaker 8: that ball.
- 11:28Speaker 9: What was your view of that play hours to trying
- 11:30Speaker 9: to get him down in the space.
- 11:32Speaker 8: Of that size.
- 11:33Speaker 7: Yeah, just I just gotta do better just knocking the
- 11:35Speaker 7: stiff him down and just find a way to get
- 11:37Speaker 7: him down.
- 11:37Speaker 8: So he's a.
- 11:38Speaker 7: Good player, obviously he's a large human being, so just
- 11:41Speaker 7: just gotta knock the stiff arm down and just get him,
- 11:43Speaker 7: find a way to get him down.
- 11:45Speaker 2: They went heavy to the screen game.
- 11:47Speaker 8: Went's the key to playing those.
- 11:48Speaker 7: Men getting eleven half of the football. That's that's really it.
- 11:53Speaker 7: I mean, as frank as that age is. Eleven guys
- 11:57Speaker 7: just doing their job and once the ball get thrown,
- 11:59Speaker 7: just flying around, just trying to get them down.
- 12:02Speaker 6: You know, there's no quid we're helping moralizings at third
- 12:04Speaker 6: and eleven, third and eleven, thirty and seventeen, they keep
- 12:06Speaker 6: picking up those big ones where those artipically high percentage ways.
- 12:10Speaker 8: Yeah, it's frustrating.
- 12:11Speaker 7: You know, those are favorable situations for the defense, and
- 12:15Speaker 7: you know we expect to get off the field really
- 12:18Speaker 7: every single time we're in that situation.
- 12:20Speaker 8: So it's super frustrating.
- 12:23Speaker 7: So we just gotta just watch the film and find out,
- 12:25Speaker 7: you know, what exactly went wrong and just do better
- 12:28Speaker 7: with tackling, do better just forming to the football, taking
- 12:30Speaker 7: better angles, and just finding a way to get the
- 12:32Speaker 7: runner down. So it's frustrating, but we just gotta.
- 12:35Speaker 8: Find a way to not let it happened. In the
- 12:37Speaker 8: next few weeks and.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Those third and lungs, it seemed like the strategy was,
- 12:41Speaker 2: you know, if they catch it short close to the
- 12:44Speaker 2: line of scrimmage, we gotta rally up and make the play,
- 12:46Speaker 2: which is pretty common, and unfortunately there were several plays
- 12:49Speaker 2: where you just weren't able to.
- 12:50Speaker 8: Execute that way.
- 12:51Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, we try to try to keep everything
- 12:53Speaker 7: in front of you and just like I said, just
- 12:55Speaker 7: rally and tackle them. So we just need to do
- 12:57Speaker 7: a better job of that. Frustrating that we add them in.
- 13:00Speaker 7: You know, so many of those situations today and.
- 13:03Speaker 8: We weren't able to get off the field.
- 13:04Speaker 7: But you know, those, like I said, those are favorable
- 13:07Speaker 7: situations for the defense, and we can get 'em in
- 13:09Speaker 7: a third down and long every single time, then you know,
- 13:12Speaker 7: that's that's playing good football. So we just gotta find
- 13:14Speaker 7: a way to just correct those mistakes and now that
- 13:16Speaker 7: to happen again, three straight.
- 13:17Speaker 8: Games without a turnover. What's the key to get a
- 13:20Speaker 8: news going?
- 13:21Speaker 7: Just seeing the ball, Just having a knack for it,
- 13:23Speaker 7: you know, whether that's punching, ripping, stabbing, picking the ball off,
- 13:28Speaker 7: whatever it is, just just gotta see the ball better.
- 13:30Speaker 7: You know, our offenses, you know, fighting and scratching, carn
- 13:33Speaker 7: doing everything they can for us, and you know, we
- 13:35Speaker 7: just gotta we gotta compliment them and give them some
- 13:38Speaker 7: turnovers and return.
- 13:39Speaker 8: So we're just we're building towards that.
- 13:42Speaker 7: You know, it's frustrating that we haven't done that in
- 13:43Speaker 7: the past three games, but we work at it every
- 13:46Speaker 7: single day so that that worm, that turnover worm is
- 13:49Speaker 7: gonna turn.
- 13:50Speaker 8: So it's gonna turn very soon.
- 13:51Speaker 9: You've used the word frustrating a lot. Just how much
- 13:53Speaker 9: more frustrating.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Is it knowing where you guys are in the division
- 13:56Speaker 2: and knowing how much win here could have tightened.
- 13:59Speaker 9: Things in the re.
- 14:01Speaker 7: It's frustrating again. You know, this division is still there's
- 14:06Speaker 7: still a lot of ball have to be played. Still
- 14:08Speaker 7: gotta play Baltimore twice, Cleveland, Aga, Cleveland again. So I
- 14:12Speaker 7: mean there's it's still a lot of room to for
- 14:15Speaker 7: us to you know, rise and you know take that
- 14:17Speaker 7: top spot. So it, like I said, it is frustrating,
- 14:20Speaker 7: but uh, they don't they don't call the season after
- 14:22Speaker 7: the same game. So we we got we got work
- 14:24Speaker 7: to do, but we'll we'll respond for sure.
- 14:26Speaker 2: The rofense did only score twenty were their positive things
- 14:30Speaker 2: on defense, and if Selwich stood out.
- 14:33Speaker 7: To you, Yeah, for sure there were positives, and you know,
- 14:36Speaker 7: twenty is still too much in in my opinion and
- 14:39Speaker 7: our whole defense opinion like that that's they shouldn't they
- 14:44Speaker 7: shouldn't have had twenty points. But I thought we played well,
- 14:47Speaker 7: just never never wavering. You know when things got hard,
- 14:50Speaker 7: you know, we stayed together. You know, the energy was great.
- 14:53Speaker 7: So you know, we we we're we're building a family
- 14:55Speaker 7: on this defense, and we we know that we're gonna
- 14:57Speaker 7: fight til the last second. And now things may not
- 15:00Speaker 7: be pretty, but you know we're going to finish all
- 15:02Speaker 7: four quarters or however long. It takes so a lot
- 15:05Speaker 7: of positives to take away, but you know, the main
- 15:07Speaker 7: positives that we just got to get a win, and
- 15:09Speaker 7: that's what we fail to do today. So just you
- 15:11Speaker 7: got to look forward to next we try to do that.
- 15:14Speaker 2: The loss drop the Bengals to three and seven. There
- 15:17Speaker 2: are three games behind the Steelers and two games behind
- 15:19Speaker 2: the Ravens with seven games to go. Now, let's hear
- 15:23Speaker 2: from head coach Zach Taylor, who spoke to Dave Lapham
- 15:26Speaker 2: after the game in.
- 15:28Speaker 4: The Bengals locker room. With Bengals head coach Zach Taylor
- 15:32Speaker 4: tough today coming to Pittsburgh. You knew you were going
- 15:36Speaker 4: to be playing a really good football team, a sound
- 15:38Speaker 4: football team. Just didn't didn't work out. What do you
- 15:41Speaker 4: think with the biggest reasons that didn't win this football game?
- 15:44Speaker 3: Turner re battle, that's the number one starting point. Two
- 15:47Speaker 3: to nothing. Two of them led to fourteen points. You're
- 15:49Speaker 3: rarely going to win in this league when you have
- 15:51Speaker 3: one for touchdown, two for touchdown is going to really
- 15:54Speaker 3: set you back, you know. So you an opportunity twenty
- 15:57Speaker 3: to twelve, you're in field goal range, worst case, you
- 15:59Speaker 3: feel like going to kick a field goal, and then
- 16:02Speaker 3: Joe's hit as he throws and picked six and then
- 16:05Speaker 3: turned around with a fumble, you know, right away on
- 16:07Speaker 3: the next one for a touchdown. So that's not winning football.
- 16:10Speaker 3: That's not what I was supposed to look like. Credit
- 16:11Speaker 3: to them for taking advantage of that, running away with
- 16:13Speaker 3: it and again losing the turn of balltitude. Nothing's the
- 16:17Speaker 3: best starting point there is for that.
- 16:18Speaker 4: Yeah, the final score really doesn't dictate or show what
- 16:22Speaker 4: the game was like. I mean, for three quarters it
- 16:24Speaker 4: was a battle. I mean a battle where I was
- 16:26Speaker 4: you know, fighting for every inch, tooth and nail, every
- 16:29Speaker 4: inch of the football field. What were you thinking? Did
- 16:33Speaker 4: you feel like you were not in control, but you
- 16:36Speaker 4: feel like going to win this football game.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Absolutely. We've been in a lot of these dog fights
- 16:40Speaker 3: and had opportunities right until the very last player to
- 16:43Speaker 3: win the game, so that that's not unique. Being down
- 16:44Speaker 3: eight points felt like at halftime we were in a
- 16:47Speaker 3: fine spot. We're gonna get the ball start the half,
- 16:49Speaker 3: came out, scored points and just never never took control
- 16:54Speaker 3: of the game. There was not a point where we
- 16:55Speaker 3: ever took control of the game, and they did in
- 16:59Speaker 3: the fourth quarter. They to control of it. And that's
- 17:01Speaker 3: that's the difference.
- 17:02Speaker 4: You hold a team to twenty eight percent third down conversion,
- 17:05Speaker 4: I think it was like twenty eight points six percent
- 17:07Speaker 4: or something like that Pittsburgh Steelers on third down, usually
- 17:10Speaker 4: that is in the winning column of a football game.
- 17:14Speaker 4: How rare is it to hold a team to that
- 17:15Speaker 4: kind of a performance on third down and not win
- 17:18Speaker 4: the game?
- 17:18Speaker 3: Yeah, the plan was good. Again, it's it comes down
- 17:20Speaker 3: to that's great, we got to get a turnover. You know,
- 17:23Speaker 3: we've had several games now with no turnovers created, and
- 17:26Speaker 3: offensively we give him fourteen points. That's that's just there's
- 17:29Speaker 3: no chance you're gonna win that.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean turnover third down. What about the running
- 17:35Speaker 4: game offensively? He Chase Brown ran the ball effectively before
- 17:39Speaker 4: he ran hard. I mean he always does. He gives
- 17:41Speaker 4: every effort that he has a total effort every snap
- 17:45Speaker 4: that he runs the football. Other than him, do you
- 17:47Speaker 4: feel like the running game was proficient enough?
- 17:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I think he's right now, especially with small JL,
- 17:52Speaker 3: he's the main running point. We're gonna give Taj and
- 17:54Speaker 3: Kendle reps. We got confidence in those guys, so I
- 17:57Speaker 3: thought we got way we needed. It's not always going
- 17:59Speaker 3: to be pretty. When you're playing any team in the North.
- 18:02Speaker 3: You're gonna have some you feel really good about their
- 18:04Speaker 3: effishent they're explosive. You're gonna have some that are no
- 18:07Speaker 3: gains or one game and you're just you're gonna have
- 18:09Speaker 3: to rally behind that because that's just when you're playing
- 18:11Speaker 3: a great front like they have. That's part of the
- 18:14Speaker 3: part of the process, and that doesn't catch a soff guard.
- 18:16Speaker 3: And we just got to handle the next down as
- 18:19Speaker 3: well as we can.
- 18:19Speaker 4: I bet when you were traveling to Pittsburgh, and thinking
- 18:22Speaker 4: about this football game. Mason Rudolph wasn't a name that
- 18:25Speaker 4: was in the top of everybody's mind that he was
- 18:27Speaker 4: going to come and play in a football game. What
- 18:30Speaker 4: did you obviously study everybody? Everybody just go out in
- 18:33Speaker 4: department coach, everybody studies everybody. What does Mason Rudolph do
- 18:37Speaker 4: to help his football team win? Oh, he's a veteran quarterback.
- 18:40Speaker 4: He's he's been in this building before. We played against
- 18:44Speaker 4: last year in Tennessee. You just got to managing their offense,
- 18:47Speaker 4: you know, and they were running the ball well, and
- 18:49Speaker 4: he was getting the ball in the perimeter. He was
- 18:50Speaker 4: getting the ball in some nakeds. They didn't try to
- 18:53Speaker 4: put too much on him, you know, in a windy,
- 18:55Speaker 4: cold environment where he's coming in the second half, and
- 18:58Speaker 4: he did a good job managing what they want.
- 18:59Speaker 8: Him to do.
- 19:00Speaker 4: Everybody in the National Football League has at least two losses,
- 19:03Speaker 4: so I mean the season is not over. I mean
- 19:05Speaker 4: there's plenty to play for. What do you do to
- 19:10Speaker 4: make sure that your your football team stays focused and
- 19:13Speaker 4: takes it one game at a time.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Yeah, we go back to work and we keep fighting.
- 19:16Speaker 3: And that's what this locker room has been about through
- 19:18Speaker 3: thick and thin, and so I trust that that's that's
- 19:21Speaker 3: the message they've received, that's the message they want to
- 19:23Speaker 3: receive and follow. I've got full trust that will do that.
- 19:27Speaker 3: We have to find a way to win a football game.
- 19:29Speaker 3: That's there's you can't run from that. These these losses
- 19:32Speaker 3: they take it out of you, you know, they do.
- 19:34Speaker 3: They beat you up. But in this profession, you got
- 19:35Speaker 3: no choice or professionals, we got to bounce back the
- 19:38Speaker 3: next day, find a way to have a great attitude,
- 19:40Speaker 3: fix the things we got to fix, and come back
- 19:42Speaker 3: ready to fight and go find a win.
- 19:43Speaker 8: And that's exactly what we're going to do.
- 19:45Speaker 4: Jamar Chase and Tiggans are going to get a lot
- 19:47Speaker 4: of attention every time they play. They're great. I mean,
- 19:50Speaker 4: I think they're the best duo of the best tandem
- 19:52Speaker 4: in football any level of football. Pittsburgh Steelers did a
- 19:56Speaker 4: pretty good job. I mean, Jamar and t they're going
- 19:58Speaker 4: to make plays. They did make plays, but but overall,
- 20:00Speaker 4: I think the Pittsburgh's deal has handled things pretty well.
- 20:03Speaker 4: What did did they do anything? Difference coverage wires.
- 20:05Speaker 3: They just weren't going to give you any access, you know,
- 20:07Speaker 3: they were going to make sure that there was no
- 20:08Speaker 3: access there. A little bit different than the first time
- 20:10Speaker 3: we played them. Not to be expected. You didn't expect
- 20:12Speaker 3: the exact same point when you played them again and
- 20:15Speaker 3: and again.
- 20:15Speaker 8: We just didn't.
- 20:16Speaker 3: We didn't find a way enough to get points on
- 20:18Speaker 3: the board early in the game when our defense was
- 20:21Speaker 3: getting some stops.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Next a home game against the New England Patriots, who
- 20:26Speaker 2: are nine and two with an eight game winning streak
- 20:29Speaker 2: after beating the Jets on Thursday night. The Patriots open
- 20:33Speaker 2: is a five and a half point favorite. The Bengals

- 20:57Speaker 2: this week's fun Facts conversation featuring a Cincinnati kid who
- 21:02Speaker 2: is currently on the Bengals roster. Time for some fun
- 21:06Speaker 2: facts with quarterback Sean Clifford, a local kid out of
- 21:09Speaker 2: Saint Xavier High School here in Cincinnati, you haven't had
- 21:12Speaker 2: the opportunity to play in a game yet for the Bengals,
- 21:15Speaker 2: but describe what it's been like for you to go
- 21:17Speaker 2: to work every day at pay Course Stadium.
- 21:19Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 21:19Speaker 9: I think it means lots of my family first and foremost.
- 21:22Speaker 10: You know, the the Cliffords have been living here for
- 21:24Speaker 10: over twenty years now, and you know, we really truly
- 21:28Speaker 10: call this place a home. So just being able to
- 21:30Speaker 10: go to work with a great group of guys, great
- 21:33Speaker 10: coaching staff, and great front office. I think that all together,
- 21:37Speaker 10: it just means a little extra. I know it means
- 21:39Speaker 10: a lot to the guys in this locker room, but
- 21:42Speaker 10: for me personally, you know, it is personal. So it's
- 21:46Speaker 10: been a pleasure to be here so far and looking
- 21:49Speaker 10: at some wins in the future.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Did you attend a lot of Bengals games when you
- 21:52Speaker 2: were young, and if so, do any specific memories stand out.
- 21:56Speaker 10: We would go to games all the time, But my
- 21:59Speaker 10: senior year, my parents actually got my brother and I
- 22:04Speaker 10: season tickets four just for my senior year and his
- 22:08Speaker 10: eighth grade year. And if you know brother, the brother connection,
- 22:11Speaker 10: obviously you bicker and you fight each other for so long,
- 22:14Speaker 10: and it was actually funny because in my last year
- 22:16Speaker 10: before I left for college and his first year going
- 22:19Speaker 10: into high school. You know, it was that opportunity to
- 22:21Speaker 10: go to the Bengals games where I feel like we
- 22:23Speaker 10: really developed that best friendship and it carries on today.
- 22:27Speaker 9: You know, that's my right hand man.
- 22:28Speaker 10: So I owe a lot to this team just from
- 22:31Speaker 10: being a fan first and foremost.
- 22:33Speaker 9: My brother and I would always talk about it.
- 22:35Speaker 10: I was able to the first game point out to
- 22:38Speaker 10: Zach the exact spot where I was sitting, you know,
- 22:41Speaker 10: almost a decade ago. So it's really cool to be
- 22:44Speaker 10: back on the field contributing to a team, maybe not
- 22:47Speaker 10: on the field, but from a week to week perspective,
- 22:49Speaker 10: just giving it.
- 22:50Speaker 9: My all and trying to find a way to win.
- 22:52Speaker 2: We're visiting with Sean Clifford. One of the most memorable
- 22:54Speaker 2: moments in the Bengal Super Bowl run in twenty twenty
- 22:57Speaker 2: one was the playoff game in Tennessee where Joe Burrow
- 22:59Speaker 2: got sacked nine times and the Bengals still won the game.
- 23:02Speaker 2: You did that in the state championship game for Saint
- 23:04Speaker 2: X back in twenty sixteen. Describe that season because it
- 23:08Speaker 2: was not a smooth ride for the Bombers.
- 23:11Speaker 10: Yeah, very similar to this year. I think, you know,
- 23:13Speaker 10: the at least the opportunity. You know, we went five
- 23:15Speaker 10: and five in the regular season. Steve Speckck actually wrote
- 23:18Speaker 10: a book about that season. But when five and five,
- 23:22Speaker 10: I had injuries. We had injuries going into the season.
- 23:24Speaker 10: I think that we had five starters out by the
- 23:27Speaker 10: first week. So you know, it was a lot of
- 23:29Speaker 10: ups and downs, but put together some good wins in
- 23:32Speaker 10: the back end, made it into the playoffs, is a
- 23:35Speaker 10: very late seed, and then rode that momentum all the
- 23:38Speaker 10: way to the state championship. And I think that you know,
- 23:40Speaker 10: you in those situations, you know, I compare it, you
- 23:43Speaker 10: can compare it in every level.
- 23:45Speaker 9: You know, you just got to find a way to
- 23:47Speaker 9: string together wins.
- 23:48Speaker 10: But then once you get to the big dance and
- 23:49Speaker 10: it's one game at a time, anything can happen. So
- 23:53Speaker 10: I think that that's always been my mindset is you know,
- 23:55Speaker 10: a season's long, it's gonna be tough, and there's gonna
- 23:57Speaker 10: be ups and downs, but weathering that story and being
- 24:00Speaker 10: able to at least get to the final that you know,
- 24:03Speaker 10: that final show, then anybody can win every single week.
- 24:06Speaker 10: So it's just about putting putting enough together, you know,
- 24:09Speaker 10: because you're gonna face adversity. But if you can put
- 24:12Speaker 10: enough together to get to that point, then you can
- 24:15Speaker 10: catch a hot streak.
- 24:16Speaker 2: From a state championship at Saint X, it was on
- 24:18Speaker 2: to Penn State, where you spent six years. Why did
- 24:22Speaker 2: you choose the Nittney Lions.
- 24:23Speaker 10: It really came down to James Franklin and I hate
- 24:25Speaker 10: to see him go. It was tough to see him go,
- 24:28Speaker 10: for sure, and I know a lot of guys in
- 24:29Speaker 10: that locker room are still feeling that just because you know,
- 24:33Speaker 10: James was such a great guy, a family man, somebody
- 24:37Speaker 10: who really preached, you know, the same mantra similar to
- 24:41Speaker 10: Saint X men for others. You know, it was kind
- 24:43Speaker 10: of the same way at Penn State, and my mom
- 24:46Speaker 10: really fell in love with the idea of me going
- 24:48Speaker 10: to that school. Thank god she did, because I really,
- 24:51Speaker 10: you know, she she was a big proponent of going
- 24:53Speaker 10: to Penn State. Uh, staying committed the whole way through
- 24:55Speaker 10: committing early and staying committed. So I owe a lot
- 24:59Speaker 10: to my parents for kind of steering me in that direction.
- 25:02Speaker 10: I always loved Penn State, but once I got there,
- 25:05Speaker 10: it's around the people, you know, Pennsylvania. I really consider
- 25:09Speaker 10: Pennsylvania and Ohio to be the two spots that I
- 25:12Speaker 10: really love Midwest kid through and through.
- 25:14Speaker 9: That's for sure.
- 25:15Speaker 2: You were a Rose Bowl MVP and a win over Utah.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Was that the highlight of your time at Penn State
- 25:20Speaker 2: or was there something else?
- 25:21Speaker 9: I think it's always gonna be a highlight.
- 25:22Speaker 10: It's the last game whenever you can walk have have
- 25:26Speaker 10: a walk off where you really you know, I did
- 25:30Speaker 10: not expect it, but you know, we get a standing ovation.
- 25:33Speaker 10: I know it's not about one person, but I thought
- 25:36Speaker 10: that when I walked off the field at the Rose
- 25:38Speaker 10: Bowl and got that standing, Oh, it.
- 25:41Speaker 9: Wasn't It wasn't about me for the for the moment.
- 25:44Speaker 10: It was the village that it took of, all those
- 25:46Speaker 10: different people and all those teammates and captains that and
- 25:49Speaker 10: coaches that poured so much into me throughout my career
- 25:52Speaker 10: that you know, it really brought me to tears just
- 25:54Speaker 10: thinking about it, and it will always give me kind
- 25:56Speaker 10: of chill.
- 25:56Speaker 9: So I think the Rose Bowl is one of them.
- 25:57Speaker 10: And then you know, you can never kind of kind
- 26:00Speaker 10: the white out as well.
- 26:01Speaker 9: You know, I think that.
- 26:02Speaker 10: That unbiasedly, I've I've talked to a lot of guys
- 26:06Speaker 10: who have played in a lot of big games, and unbiasedly,
- 26:08Speaker 10: I think that everybody can say that the white out.
- 26:10Speaker 9: Is a special moment, a special game.
- 26:13Speaker 10: But between those those few games that I played that,
- 26:16Speaker 10: you know, Rose Bull's definitely up there as well.
- 26:19Speaker 2: After a record setting career at Penn State, you were
- 26:21Speaker 2: a fifth round draft pick by the Green Bay Packers.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Describe your draft experience.
- 26:25Speaker 9: It was a crazy one.
- 26:26Speaker 10: I you know, I didn't get invited to the combine,
- 26:28Speaker 10: was counted out a bunch of different times. And then
- 26:31Speaker 10: as I kind of told my story through the draft
- 26:33Speaker 10: process the scouts and kind of worked my way up
- 26:35Speaker 10: to to to the the GM level and the coaches level,
- 26:39Speaker 10: I think that my story is all about heart and
- 26:42Speaker 10: will and what I can provide from a value perspective.
- 26:44Speaker 9: To a team. And it's it's a day to day thing.
- 26:47Speaker 10: You know, You're gonna get my best every single day,
- 26:51Speaker 10: doesn't matter. You know, if it's if it's a Monday
- 26:54Speaker 10: or Tuesday off day, or if it's game day. You know,
- 26:56Speaker 10: I'm gonna give it my all because I'm I always
- 26:59Speaker 10: like to think I'm an ulti competitor. You know, I
- 27:01Speaker 10: want to win as much as the next guy, and
- 27:04Speaker 10: I'll do whatever it takes for my teammates to be
- 27:06Speaker 10: able to get that done.
- 27:07Speaker 9: I think that, you know, green Bay heard that. I
- 27:10Speaker 9: know that in the process.
- 27:11Speaker 10: Cincinnati, you know, I was talking to brad Our, quarterback
- 27:13Speaker 10: coach as well, and he even reminded me that, you know,
- 27:17Speaker 10: they weren't taking a quarterback in the draft, but if
- 27:19Speaker 10: I did slip outside of the draft, you know, since
- 27:22Speaker 10: he was gonna try to be the first call that
- 27:24Speaker 10: they make to get me here. So I always appreciated them,
- 27:27Speaker 10: but Green Bay, you know, took that shot in the
- 27:28Speaker 10: fifth round. You know, I was able to back up
- 27:31Speaker 10: Jay Love for a couple of years, and I thought
- 27:33Speaker 10: that the bonds that I created in that locker room.
- 27:35Speaker 10: I have a lot of respect for how the Packers
- 27:37Speaker 10: run their organization. It's just a it's a it's a
- 27:39Speaker 10: well run show, and I think that it really helped
- 27:43Speaker 10: me early in my career to be able to see
- 27:45Speaker 10: how it's done. So that way, you know, I can
- 27:48Speaker 10: bring that that energy and that mindset into places like.
- 27:52Speaker 2: This we're visiting with Sean Clifford. You join the Bengals
- 27:55Speaker 2: in September following Joe Burrow's injury, do all of your
- 27:58Speaker 2: Cincinnati friends and family members ask you what's Joe Burrow Like?
- 28:03Speaker 10: I think it's it's both Joe's now, obviously, you know,
- 28:07Speaker 10: being in the in a room full of Joe's and
- 28:10Speaker 10: Jake uh, you know, we have three great minds in
- 28:12Speaker 10: that room that that all contribute in different ways. You know,
- 28:16Speaker 10: I think that Joe Burrow is somebody who has a
- 28:18Speaker 10: lot of experience early He's an elite, elite talent and
- 28:22Speaker 10: somebody who I've I it's funny if we we lost
- 28:26Speaker 10: the game into Minnesota my in twenty nineteen in a
- 28:30Speaker 10: in a very controversial game that I won't get into
- 28:32Speaker 10: because referees in my opinion, but if we win that game,
- 28:36Speaker 10: in which we should have, we actually would have played
- 28:39Speaker 10: Joe and the l and the LSU Tigers in in
- 28:42Speaker 10: the first week of that that playoff.
- 28:45Speaker 9: So I've always seen him as a great competitor.
- 28:47Speaker 10: I've seen him as somebody who you know, I have,
- 28:50Speaker 10: I have a lot of respect for, and so you know,
- 28:54Speaker 10: he provides so much value to that room.
- 28:56Speaker 9: And then you add Joe Flacco in the mix.
- 28:58Speaker 10: His experience and all the stories that he can tell
- 29:01Speaker 10: different looks and different players he's played with and how
- 29:04Speaker 10: to scheme certain ways. It truly is incredible to just
- 29:08Speaker 10: see the full picture and then you later and a
- 29:11Speaker 10: get a guy like Jake who's done such a good
- 29:12Speaker 10: job of backing up Joe and coming into big situations
- 29:15Speaker 10: and winning games. Very blessed to be a part of
- 29:18Speaker 10: this room, and I think it's competitive. I think it's exciting,
- 29:20Speaker 10: and someone that really pushes not only our room but
- 29:25Speaker 10: the players around us as well to be their best
- 29:27Speaker 10: version of the selves and really elevate the competition.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Give us the quarterbacks perspective for what Flacco has been
- 29:34Speaker 2: able to do to come in under those circumstances and
- 29:38Speaker 2: play the way he has, I.
- 29:39Speaker 10: Think it just it's incredible because I know you can
- 29:43Speaker 10: point to, Oh, it's tough to get the terminology, and
- 29:47Speaker 10: it's tough to just understand a game plan that quickly,
- 29:50Speaker 10: and you know, you take nothing away from that, but
- 29:53Speaker 10: the way that he goes out and executes I think is.
- 29:55Speaker 9: The most impressive.
- 29:56Speaker 10: It's so simple, the way he plays, but it's so
- 30:02Speaker 10: it's so intensely accurate. Every single throw is so intentional
- 30:06Speaker 10: when he's getting through his progression, it's so intentional.
- 30:09Speaker 9: You know, he knows exactly where his checkdowns are.
- 30:12Speaker 10: He knows, honestly, He's studied so quickly how our receivers
- 30:17Speaker 10: act between Jamar and t and the different nuances of
- 30:20Speaker 10: how to throw them the ball on different routes. And
- 30:23Speaker 10: I think it's been really cool as a young guy
- 30:25Speaker 10: coming into this, seeing his preparation and then turning that
- 30:28Speaker 10: preparation and really really making it into reality when the
- 30:31Speaker 10: game's hit and you're seeing that come full circle game
- 30:35Speaker 10: after game after game as he puts up big numbers.
- 30:37Speaker 2: A few wildcard topics now for Bengals quarterback Sean Clifford,
- 30:40Speaker 2: Who is your all time favorite athlete in any sport
- 30:44Speaker 2: and why?
- 30:45Speaker 10: I think Kobe is probably an old timer for me,
- 30:48Speaker 10: just because the mindset, the mentality, the mama mentality of
- 30:52Speaker 10: I think he was such a servant leader outside the community.
- 30:55Speaker 10: I think that he did a lot as you study
- 30:57Speaker 10: kind of his life and what he did with his family.
- 31:01Speaker 10: I think from a business perspective, he did so much
- 31:03Speaker 10: off the field that really really left a mark. From
- 31:06Speaker 10: a community perspective, he was always pouring back into kids,
- 31:09Speaker 10: and being able to to really give back to that community.
- 31:12Speaker 9: But then when you turn.
- 31:13Speaker 10: On the tape and you watch him in a game,
- 31:14Speaker 10: he turns into a complete nutter savage, And I think.
- 31:18Speaker 9: That that's I think that there's time and place for
- 31:20Speaker 9: all that.
- 31:20Speaker 10: You know, I think that you have to be an upstanding,
- 31:23Speaker 10: an upset and a citizen and a good man in
- 31:25Speaker 10: the community. And I always try to be that, especially
- 31:28Speaker 10: now being back in the community that gave me so much.
- 31:30Speaker 10: But really for a guy like that, you know, when
- 31:33Speaker 10: when when it's time to play ball, I think it.
- 31:36Speaker 10: You know, there is a switch that you can turn
- 31:38Speaker 10: on and it's okay to to kind of get aggressive
- 31:40Speaker 10: in that situation because you know, all that hard work
- 31:42Speaker 10: and dedication that you put in to be able to
- 31:45Speaker 10: to win and to you know, have the chance to win.
- 31:48Speaker 9: It's it's it's.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Meaningful aside from throwing a football. Tell us something you
- 31:53Speaker 2: do well.
- 31:55Speaker 10: Oh, man, I you know, I do a lot of
- 31:57Speaker 10: business on the side.
- 31:58Speaker 9: I really enjoy.
- 31:59Speaker 10: Venture cap but I really enjoy private equity. I enjoy
- 32:02Speaker 10: the the nuances there. I really just have a mind
- 32:07Speaker 10: that loves to learn. You know, it doesn't really matter
- 32:11Speaker 10: what it is It's more just the fact of how
- 32:14Speaker 10: can I expand my perspective on on everything, because I
- 32:17Speaker 10: feel like everybody that comes into the locker room you
- 32:20Speaker 10: want to have different ways to connect, and different guys
- 32:23Speaker 10: are into different things.
- 32:24Speaker 9: So I've always just been.
- 32:26Speaker 10: An ultimate learner and and an ultimate question question asker
- 32:30Speaker 10: because I think that that's the best way to as
- 32:32Speaker 10: a quarterback, to be able to get to know your teammates,
- 32:34Speaker 10: especially in an interesting situation where you come in the
- 32:37Speaker 10: middle of the year.
- 32:38Speaker 9: You still want to be able to lead, and.
- 32:40Speaker 10: The best way to be able to lead is to
- 32:41Speaker 10: actually know the people around you and know what makes
- 32:44Speaker 10: them tick, knows know what makes them play well. And
- 32:47Speaker 10: that's through conversation, you know, at lunch tables in the
- 32:50Speaker 10: locker room. So I always like to just try to
- 32:53Speaker 10: to learn as much as I possibly can about a
- 32:55Speaker 10: bunch of different topics, so that way, if a guy
- 32:57Speaker 10: brings something up, I can I can hold a conversation.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Penn State famously whears the most plain uniforms in college football,
- 33:05Speaker 2: perhaps all of sports. So bland that they're cool or
- 33:09Speaker 2: time for an update, Oh they're cool.
- 33:11Speaker 10: I'm an old school type guy anyway, So I don't
- 33:14Speaker 10: think that they need any sort of update. I've always
- 33:17Speaker 10: appreciated the tradition and I think that you know, I
- 33:20Speaker 10: I grew up watching I wasn't a huge NFL guy
- 33:23Speaker 10: until I really started fall in love with the Bengals,
- 33:27Speaker 10: but I always appreciated watching college ball and specifically college players,
- 33:32Speaker 10: and I just always loved I followed a lot of
- 33:34Speaker 10: Nerdame traditional program, you know, with a lot of a
- 33:39Speaker 10: lot of good guys, good community guys.
- 33:41Speaker 9: And I don't think.
- 33:42Speaker 10: I I knew the importance of that when I was
- 33:45Speaker 10: just a kid.
- 33:45Speaker 9: You know, you're just watching them, busy that they're on TV.
- 33:49Speaker 10: But you know, I followed some some some great players
- 33:52Speaker 10: just because I was just attracted to the way that
- 33:55Speaker 10: they held themselves.
- 33:57Speaker 9: And I think that you find that at Penn State.
- 33:59Speaker 9: I think you find that in Our Dame. You find
- 34:01Speaker 9: it at schools that are traditional. So to answer your question,
- 34:04Speaker 9: long story short, Yeah, I love the uniforms.
- 34:07Speaker 8: All right.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Final fun fact for Sean Clifford. This one's kind of deep.
- 34:10Speaker 2: If you could meet anybody in history, living or deceased,
- 34:15Speaker 2: who would that person be.
- 34:17Speaker 10: You know, I'm a Christian man, and I think that
- 34:19Speaker 10: Jesus would be somebody who I'd love to meet. You know,
- 34:22Speaker 10: I think that it's he's the ultimate messenger and he's
- 34:26Speaker 10: the ultimate you know, warrior when it came to doing
- 34:29Speaker 10: good in this world. And I think that the conversations
- 34:33Speaker 10: that you know, I would have and will have one
- 34:35Speaker 10: day in my in my opinion, will be magical and
- 34:39Speaker 10: really life changing. So, you know, always trying to dive
- 34:42Speaker 10: into the word and finding different ways to talk to
- 34:45Speaker 10: him in different ways, but having an actual sit down conversation,
- 34:49Speaker 10: maybe over at dinner, it would be really cool.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Sean, appreciate your time. It's great to have you on
- 34:53Speaker 2: your hometown team. Best of luck the rest of the year.
