- 0:00Speaker 1: Shana. Four years ago, when you came on this program
- 0:02Speaker 1: as you've been doing now for twenty plus years, and
- 0:05Speaker 1: talked about recruits. You mentioned a kid out of four
- 0:07Speaker 1: Worth named Jeremiah Charles, and I remember that because he'd
- 0:10Speaker 1: only played one year of organized football. Now, this, of
- 0:13Speaker 1: course was at the dawn of the nil era, and
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm thinking, Okay, this guy's not going to be around.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Nobody sticks around four years anymore. Well he's here four
- 0:21Speaker 1: years later, and he's now become physically stronger, he's become
- 0:26Speaker 1: mentally more mature, and it looks like he's about to
- 0:28Speaker 1: start at cornerback.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, he's put himself into a great position, Jim. In
- 0:33Speaker 2: terms of athletic ability, he had a fifty one foot
- 0:36Speaker 2: triple jumper, scored points at the Big Ten indoor meet
- 0:41Speaker 2: his freshman year. I know when they test out these guys.
- 0:45Speaker 2: He's got a forty two inch vertical, which I think
- 0:47Speaker 2: him and Vincent genetone have the highest on the team
- 0:50Speaker 2: right now. So he's got all those attributes. He just
- 0:53Speaker 2: needed to learn how to play the game of football
- 0:54Speaker 2: on it. You know, from all accounts, he's having a
- 0:57Speaker 2: great camp battling for that other job. Opposite of Andrew Marshall.
- 1:01Speaker 2: You've got Victor Evans, the Florida international transfer, and the
- 1:04Speaker 2: Danny Odom, the highly touted true freshman who was brought
- 1:07Speaker 2: up on the BTN Show by cam Lenhart, but they've
- 1:10Speaker 2: kind of kind of kept it quiet with him. So
- 1:13Speaker 2: there's really I think three guys right there. But Charles
- 1:17Speaker 2: today would have the leg up, and I think the
- 1:19Speaker 2: way the schedule sets up, you're gonna be able to
- 1:21Speaker 2: play a lot of those guys, with Charles maybe being
- 1:23Speaker 2: the guy that comes out in front early on.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Like I said, this is a fourth year junior. Fourth
- 1:28Speaker 1: year juniors in the same program do not exist anymore.
- 1:32Speaker 1: They are white elephants. And yet I think I would
- 1:36Speaker 1: hope that it would signal a revisiting of that era
- 1:40Speaker 1: that if a guy like Charles can come up through
- 1:42Speaker 1: the ranks like he did, take a red shirt season
- 1:44Speaker 1: and then become the kind of football player that he
- 1:47Speaker 1: ultimately could become because he was very deliberate about his progress,
- 1:51Speaker 1: that might serve as an inspiration or a good pathway
- 1:54Speaker 1: for the other guys. Is that a pipe dream of mine?
- 1:57Speaker 1: Or could that happen?
- 1:58Speaker 2: Oh? I mean sure, but it's just such an unpredictable
- 2:03Speaker 2: era in general, you know, and he played early. They
- 2:07Speaker 2: kind of tried to put him out there. If you
- 2:09Speaker 2: remember his red shirt freshman year in twenty twenty four,
- 2:13Speaker 2: he got the starting into UCLA and it was not
- 2:17Speaker 2: a good day for him. I mean, Eric the enemy
- 2:19Speaker 2: was the OC and he recognized who he was and
- 2:22Speaker 2: new face on the field, and they nailed him like
- 2:25Speaker 2: three or four keith ur downs in that game early,
- 2:28Speaker 2: especially when UCLA marched down the field on those long
- 2:31Speaker 2: drives that I think one of the drives is a
- 2:33Speaker 2: ten minute drive in that game. So he struggled early
- 2:37Speaker 2: in his career and he's got himself back. I think
- 2:41Speaker 2: that's probably if he does start. I mean, that's part
- 2:43Speaker 2: of the story here too. Is a guy that looked
- 2:46Speaker 2: like we might have counted out as won the job.
- 2:49Speaker 2: But until we see how he plays in a real game,
- 2:52Speaker 2: it's hard to know what they have in him, just
- 2:54Speaker 2: because we've got such a small sample size.
- 2:57Speaker 1: And of course the scrimmage on Saturday was not really
- 3:01Speaker 1: designed to show all of the little twerks, all of
- 3:05Speaker 1: the tweaks and nuances of this defense. As Matt Rule said,
- 3:08Speaker 1: this was about seeing who can block and who can tackle?
- 3:11Speaker 1: Is that smart? Don't you want to practice your whole
- 3:15Speaker 1: portfolio of defenses, looks, stunts, blitzes, all of that stuff.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Don't you want to doing that again?
- 3:22Speaker 2: They've been so locked down. I mean, had better luck
- 3:25Speaker 2: right now maybe getting a video of the streets of
- 3:28Speaker 2: North Korea than in scrimmage they kept. I mean, the
- 3:33Speaker 2: parents weren't allowed in. Nobody was allowed in, and rule
- 3:37Speaker 2: did not offer a lot, to be honest, of the
- 3:40Speaker 2: fine details of the scrimmage Saturday, one hundred and twenty plays.
- 3:44Speaker 2: They went forty plays per unit. And you know, I
- 3:49Speaker 2: think for the running back to some of these guys,
- 3:51Speaker 2: it's a huge evaluation tool. But they ran their stuff.
- 3:54Speaker 2: I mean, there's no doubt. And they'll probably have one
- 3:56Speaker 2: more scrimmage this week again on Saturday, and that will
- 4:00Speaker 2: really be it. Camp will end and classes begin a
- 4:04Speaker 2: week from today.
- 4:05Speaker 1: And they start game preparation week for Ohio. We'll talk
- 4:08Speaker 1: about Ohio. On the injury front, there were a couple
- 4:12Speaker 1: of minor injuries, guys like Caleb Benning who might miss
- 4:15Speaker 1: a practice er two, but no major injuries right.
- 4:18Speaker 2: As of now. Larry Miles is the only guy that
- 4:21Speaker 2: in this happened very early a foot injury six to
- 4:23Speaker 2: eight weeks on him, but nobody at least to this
- 4:26Speaker 2: point has been knocked out with significant injury, which is
- 4:30Speaker 2: actually preparely rare through the first two weeks of camp,
- 4:34Speaker 2: especially when they start hitting. So this will be a
- 4:36Speaker 2: big week though, obviously, to see where they're at. They
- 4:40Speaker 2: practice five times this week from today through Saturday, so
- 4:45Speaker 2: a lot of work's going to get done.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Here, all right, Seawana, we'll talk to you on Wednesday,
- 4:49Speaker 1: and a little homework assignment for you. ESPN did a
- 4:53Speaker 1: very exhaustive review of NIL pricing on individual positions, very
- 4:58Speaker 1: fascinating stuff. I'll ask you about that how it relates
- 5:02Speaker 1: to Nebraska when we talk a little bit on Wednesday.
- 5:04Speaker 1: All right, that's the ky if it would be Husker
- 5:06Speaker 1: Buzz Report with Sean Callahan every morning during the football
- 5:09Speaker 1: season at this time Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays during the
- 5:12Speaker 1: preseason camp
