- 0:08The Book of Ruth begins in dark days, but even
- 0:12in the darkness, God was at work. Through loss,
- 0:15uncertainty, and unexpected turns, we discover
- 0:19a beautiful story of grace, redemption,
- 0:22and hope. Join Scott Pauley for this new study, The Gospel
- 0:26According to Ruth. Light for Dark Days.
- 0:38Oh, what a great Savior we have. I love the Lord Jesus
- 0:41Christ. He saved my soul. He forgave my
- 0:44sin and gave me the free gift of eternal salvation.
- 0:49And he'll do the same for you if you'll trust him.
- 0:53We return once again to this amazing expression found in Ruth
- 0:56chapter 2 and verse number 12. Where Boaz,
- 0:59the redeemer, uh, the, the picture of our Lord,
- 1:03says to Ruth, this desperate woman,
- 1:07this Moabitess woman who comes seeking
- 1:10help, the Lord recompense thy work, and a full
- 1:14reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings
- 1:19thou art come to trust. I hope you'll never read that phrase in the Bible
- 1:23again the same way. Every time you see it some,
- 1:27some allusion to the wings of the Lord. I hope
- 1:31it will remind you of God's care and keeping,
- 1:34of God's provision and protection, of God's
- 1:38safety and sufficiency. I hope it will make you visually
- 1:42think about what it means to be saved, what it means to belong
- 1:46to the Lord, to be one with him.
- 1:50We've learned, of course, that there is protection and provision
- 1:54under those wings, and that we come into the very presence of God.
- 1:58That it is not just blessings that you get in salvation,
- 2:02it is the Lord himself, the person of our
- 2:05great God, the unchanging God. But today I want to give
- 2:09you one final thought from this expression, under his wings, and it is this: that
- 2:13to come under his wings teaches us a principle.
- 2:17You see, every time there is a revelation of God
- 2:21in scripture, there's always a response that man is to have.
- 2:25When God says, okay, here is, here is the truth and the provision,
- 2:30then there must be some response. And of course, it is to
- 2:34be the response of faith. But I want to show you some simple principles today,
- 2:38if I may. Look at verse number 11
- 2:41again. Boaz answered and said to her, it hath fully
- 2:45been showed me all that thou hast done unto thy mother-in-law. Since the death of
- 2:48thine husband, how thou hast left thy father and thy mother in the land of
- 2:52thy nativity and art come— that's a key word there— you've come
- 2:56unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore. Do you understand what
- 3:00Ruth did? To come under the wings meant
- 3:05that she had to leave Moab. You can't live in Moab and enjoy
- 3:10the Lord's wings and provision. She came
- 3:14to the Lord, which meant she left something to come.
- 3:18She gives us, I think, a beautiful picture here of
- 3:22what repentance is— this, this change of heart
- 3:26and mind that turns distinctly and definitely away
- 3:30from one and to another. Repentance toward God.
- 3:35If you're going to enjoy the protection and provision
- 3:39and presence of God, number one, You got to come.
- 3:44Look, this will not be forced on you. God is a gentleman.
- 3:48He's not going to force his way into your life, kick the door of
- 3:51your heart down, and barge in and take over. No, he's going to stand at
- 3:55the door and knock until you open the door and let him in. And this
- 3:58word come is a great Bible word. The first time it's found in
- 4:01scriptures in the book of Genesis when God said to Noah and his family,
- 4:04come into the ark of safety, again under his wings.
- 4:09It is a word that Jesus loved to use. Come unto me, all ye
- 4:13that labor and are heavy laden. I'll give you rest. Come unto me.
- 4:17Come after me, and I will make you. Him that cometh
- 4:21to me I will in no wise cast out.
- 4:25Peter said, bid me come unto thee on the water. Jesus said, come. I love
- 4:29this word because come is an invitation and a promise.
- 4:33You see, when the Lord says come, it means he will meet you. You don't
- 4:37work your way to God. You simply take one step of faith and the
- 4:41Lord meets you there. The moment you look to the Lord in simple faith
- 4:45and repentance, the Lord says, that's enough, and the Lord then comes to
- 4:48you. And then notice in verse number 12, the Lord recompense
- 4:52thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel,
- 4:55under whose wings thou art come. There's that word again,
- 4:59to trust. This is beautiful. We come,
- 5:03we trust. Every reference here,
- 5:07every reference in the Bible about coming under the wings connects
- 5:11us to this idea of faith. Did you know, by the way, that this same
- 5:15word is used again later in this book? We'll come to this shortly, but in
- 5:18Ruth chapter 3 and verse number 9,
- 5:21the Bible says that Ruth says to Boaz,
- 5:25spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid,
- 5:29for thou art a near kinsman. That sounds a little odd to us, but the
- 5:32idea here— the word for skirt is the same word for wings. It is the
- 5:36hem of the garment. Again, it is the,
- 5:40the furthest outreaches of what belonged to Boaz. She said,
- 5:44I want to come under that. This is so
- 5:47powerful. You see, her first hope was not Boaz.
- 5:52Her first hope, her first trust was Boaz's God. Boaz is a
- 5:55picture of Christ. It's Christ who makes God's wings
- 5:59to spread over us. We trust the Lord Jesus
- 6:02Christ because our hope is in God and God
- 6:06alone. And can I just say that his garment is big enough
- 6:10to cover all of your sin, that his,
- 6:14his garment, the skirt of his garment, the hem of his garment
- 6:18is more than enough to meet the deepest needs in your life
- 6:22if you will simply trust him. Have you come to the Lord?
- 6:25Have you trusted the Lord? If you've never come to Christ as a sinner
- 6:29and trusted him as your Savior, would you do it right now? I mean,
- 6:32wherever you are, stop the car, stop the, the broadcast,
- 6:36just stop right where you are. Bow your head and heart and say,
- 6:40God, be merciful to me, a sinner. Lord Jesus,
- 6:44I trust you now as my Savior. God will hear that prayer and
- 6:48forgive your sin and save your soul. As surely as Boaz received and
- 6:52redeemed Ruth, The Lord Jesus Christ, our heavenly Boaz,
- 6:56our great Redeemer, will do that for you. And perhaps
- 6:59you're a backslider. Perhaps you've been saved but you've wandered from
- 7:03the Lord. May I just say, he is the same as he's
- 7:07always been. You may have changed, the world may have changed, your circumstances may
- 7:11have changed, but the Lord has not. Run to the Lord and
- 7:14you'll find his wings still outstretched and
- 7:19the power of the hem of his garment still more than enough.
- 7:23Charles Wesley, the great hymn writer, wrote so many doctrinally
- 7:27rich songs, but one of those songs was a
- 7:31song that was really written to
- 7:36describe the depths of our salvation. It goes like
- 7:39this: Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom
- 7:44fly. While the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high,
- 7:48hide me, O my Savior, hide. Till the storm of life
- 7:52is past, safe into the haven guide.
- 7:55Oh, receive my soul at last. That's powerful,
- 7:59isn't it? In fact, Charles Finney sang this hymn on his deathbed
- 8:04in 1875. In Northfield, Massachusetts, when D.L.
- 8:07Moody was getting ready to go be with God— I've been in that
- 8:10room where he left this world— friends gathered
- 8:14around his deathbed and sang Jesus, Lover of My Soul. As he
- 8:18left this world. But the second verse of that hymn is what I want
- 8:21to draw your attention to today. Wesley wrote,
- 8:25other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless
- 8:30soul on thee. Leave, ah, leave me not
- 8:34alone, still support and comfort me. All my
- 8:38trust on thee is stayed,
- 8:41all my help from thee I bring. Cover my
- 8:45defenseless head with the shadow of
- 8:49thy wing. I don't know about you, I think Charles Wesley had been studying
- 8:53this expression under his wings in scripture, don't you?
- 8:57And can I tell you that that shadow of the wing, that's not a
- 9:01sad shadow or a dark shadow. No, that's the shadow that comes where there is
- 9:04light. Come to the Lord and you'll find light in him and all
- 9:07that you need, much, much more than you ever imagined. If you'll
- 9:11simply trust and come under his wings.
