- 0:03Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start
- 0:07your day in a positive way. I'm your host Anna McGivern for
- 0:11September 3rd, today's National Skyscraper Day, celebrating
- 0:15those monolithic towers that Pierce the clouds and define our
- 0:19city skylines. This holiday falls on September
- 0:223rd because it marks the birthday of the Louis H
- 0:27Sullivan, American architect known as the Father of
- 0:30skyscrapers, who was born in 1856.
- 0:35Sullivan revolutionized architecture with his famous
- 0:38principle that form follows function, helping to create the
- 0:42first true skyscrapers in Chicago in the late 1800s.
- 0:47These towering structures aren't just impressive feats of
- 0:49engineering, they're symbols of human ambition, innovation, and
- 0:54our eternal desire to reach higher.
- 0:57Skyscrapers represent humanity's refusal to be limited by what
- 1:01seems possible. When you look up at a
- 1:04skyscraper, you're seeing thousands of decisions,
- 1:07calculations, and designs made into reality and steel, glass,
- 1:12and concrete. Which brings us to today's quote
- 1:14from Frank Lloyd Wright, the legendary American architect who
- 1:19said the reality of the building flies in the space within.
- 1:26The first writes quote seems to contradict what we love about
- 1:29skyscrapers. After all, we're usually
- 1:33admiring them from the outside, marbling at their height and
- 1:37exterior design. But Wright understood something
- 1:41profound about architecture that applies to much more than
- 1:44buildings. A skyscraper might be impressive
- 1:47from street level, but it's true value lies in what happens
- 1:51inside. The lives lived, the work
- 1:55accomplished, the dreams pursued within those walls, the offices
- 2:00where breakthrough innovations happen, the apartments where
- 2:04families gather for dinner, and meeting rooms where important
- 2:08decisions are made. This principle extends far
- 2:12beyond architecture. Think about the people in your
- 2:15life. The most impressive ones aren't
- 2:17necessarily those with the flashiest exterior presentation.
- 2:22The truly remarkable people are those with rich inner lives,
- 2:27deep thoughts, genuine character and meaningful purpose.
- 2:31I visited many apartments, townhomes and houses that didn't
- 2:35look like much from the outside but inside beautiful and
- 2:39functional living space. You can't judge a book by its
- 2:42cover or a building by its exterior.
- 2:46I think most people would rather live in an ugly ish building
- 2:51with an amazing living space then an amazing exterior
- 2:54building with a crappy interior space.
- 2:58I know where I lie there. That's the wisdom both Wright
- 3:02and Sullivan understood. Great architecture isn't about
- 3:05reaching impressive heights, it's about creating meaningful
- 3:09spaces where life can flourish. So today, as we celebrate
- 3:15National Skyscraper Day, let's take Frank Lloyd right insight
- 3:20to her. Whether you're building a career
- 3:23or relationship, or just working on yourself, remember that the
- 3:27true value lies not in how impressive you look from the
- 3:30outside, but in the depth and ribness of what you're
- 3:34cultivating within. Build yourself like a great
- 3:38skyscraper with a strong foundation, thoughtful design,
- 3:41and plenty of meaningful space inside for your dreams and
- 3:46aspirations to grow. That's going to do it.
- 3:49For today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 3:51for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
