- 1:49Friday Funhouse. It's our weekly departure from the world of politics, scandal,
- 1:53etc. As we dive into well, anything but high school or anything but
- 1:59I give up. I'm going home. Anything but politics. High school football
- 2:04is underway, and we're gonna talk to Chris Lawrence about that here in a
- 2:07couple of moments. My guests host this week is the semis I don't know
- 2:10Steve Animals a semi legendary. I'm just gonna go after. I'm just gonna
- 2:15call you the legendary JK, the DJ Joe Kerner, how are you man?
- 2:19Fantastic quarter legendary, quarter legendary, Yes, JAK. We're gonna get
- 2:23to know JK a little bit later on, and of course we get play
- 2:25ten questions too. That's always a big hit. Sounds like fun, yeah,
- 2:29and we'll do that a little bit later on. Also, we have
- 2:31our adoptmu Police s Pet of the Week standing by with that. Hannah's on
- 2:35vacation this week. We have Angie that's going to be doing that segment for
- 2:38us today. We're gonna get the Angie here in just a couple of them
- 2:40moments. A little bit controversy. We don't like to get a lot of
- 2:44controversial things, but about art walking Charleston and the lack of alcohol there,
- 2:47and I'm gonna explain why. I have one of the business owners who's got
- 2:51some questions about that. We're gonna talk to him a little bit later on.
- 2:53But I want to bring in Chris Lawrence right now. I mentioned high
- 2:54school football actually at the time that I shouldn't have mentioned high school football.
- 2:59Now we could talk school football. Good morning, Chris, how were good
- 3:00morning? I was gonna say, you're not leaving because I'm not hosting another
- 3:04hour here. I've been in here long enough. Well, you had a
- 3:07difficult morning, you and carry this morning and all the all the announcers in
- 3:09the building here with with this weather situation. I was driving in it from
- 3:13Tay's Valley. It was not fun this morning, and the eas was just
- 3:15blowing up. So we apologized for that. But and we're trying to keep
- 3:19you informed, and the National Weather Service is trying to keep you informed as
- 3:23well, and sometimes they conflict with what we're all trying to do here.
- 3:25So that's that was a situation this morning. And thankfully you got here,
- 3:30okay. Yeah. Well, and there were several accidents this morning and out
- 3:34a lot of people didn't get sixty four okay. I mean I drove right
- 3:36by one that had just happened on sixty four East right around the Saint Alban's
- 3:40exit. There was one of mccorko Matros had everything fouled up. So it
- 3:45is going to look a little bit better as the day goes on. They
- 3:46tell us. As far as the weather goes. All right, let's talk
- 3:49some high school football last night. You and Jared Lewis started early with the
- 3:52War on thirty four last night. That turned out to be not that much
- 3:55of a war last night. Well, I mean it was. It was
- 3:58obvious that Winfield was outmatched. Hurricane's got a good team, obviously, and
- 4:01they took it to him pretty good by the second half. Both teams called
- 4:06off the dogs and put in their subs and got a lot of quality,
- 4:10quality minutes for those guys in the game there in the third quarter. But
- 4:14I wouldn't fred if I was Winfield. I mean, they don't have That's
- 4:16not the kind of competition they need to compete against because they're at Class double
- 4:19A school. They got romped pretty good last night, but they come back
- 4:24next weekend. They got Herbert Hoover. That's one that they really need to
- 4:26match up with. So we'll see how that goes. And by the way,
- 4:29we'll have that game on five a WCHS next Friday night. But tonight
- 4:32it's Polka at Nitro with another close rivalry game only separated by a couple of
- 4:38miles there and the Dots will travel to Underwood Field will be on the air
- 4:41at six thirty tonight is they get a seven o'clock kick there at Nitro all
- 4:45right, And of course after the games stick around for Fred Perr Singer and
- 4:48Dave Jacquelin and the crew. They're twenty second year getting people caught up on
- 4:53what's going on. And I love the show the high School Game next show
- 4:56because you literally go all over the state and you get the different announcers and
- 4:59our orders. Joe Brocado is going to be eighteen different places night, as
- 5:02Joe always is so great time of year. It's a really extremely unique show
- 5:06that's unique to West Virginia. I don't know anywhere else in the country that
- 5:10you could do a show like that with that much enthusiasm and that much information
- 5:14that people care about. So it's it's one of the most listened to shows
- 5:16we have on the network. What are we covering on your Outdoor show tomorrow
- 5:18morning, Well, believe it or not, Dave, we're almost a hunting
- 5:21season September one. September first represents the first hunting of the year and that's
- 5:27when the Morning Dove season will open in the early Canada goose season, so
- 5:30we'll be talking about shooting doves and geese tomorrow and on the third, bear
- 5:34hunting starts. The early bear season gets started down in the down in your
- 5:38country, the four bow hunting only counties. Okay, we'll have an early
- 5:41bear season, so we'll talk to Colin Carpenter about that, and Mike Peters
- 5:46from the DNR with about the bird hunting there. So all right, gonna
- 5:48be at shot. Not to be confused with Robert L. Peters, it'll
- 5:53be Mike Peters, a show chock full of information for outdoors folks. Tomorrow
- 5:59morning eight is Jared with you tonight. Jared's permanent part of the crew.
- 6:02In fact, Jared and I not not that you'll hear it here, but
- 6:05Jared and I are going tomorrow over to Ironton, Ohio to call the Martinsburg
- 6:10Clarkson, North Canada game. They're playing that in Ironton Arnton. Is that
- 6:14how you say? Yeah, if you're from there, it's aren't Martin Well
- 6:16whatever, I went over and checked out the I check out the stadium the
- 6:19other day. What a cool place, Tanks stadium. Well, and there's
- 6:23so much history with that stadium too, I mean, because that's I mean,
- 6:25if you go, but if just we won't get into it now.
- 6:28Google the history of football and Ironton, Ohio. It's it's amazing. It
- 6:30was. I was shocked when I went over there. Just a cool place,
- 6:33all right, Chris, we'll be lasting man, appreciate it. You
- 6:35razy, all right, thanks a lot. JK. That's Chris Lawrence.
- 6:39Hey Chris Man. It's great to meet you. And I used to know
- 6:42a guy that lived in Logan that used to go bear hunting with a switch.
- 6:45Yeah. Well enough about my mother. But but anyway, let's speaking
- 6:48of animals, not my mother. I'm talking about bears and things like.
- 6:53Let's sub bring in Angie Gillow water from the Canal Charleston Main Association with this
- 6:56week's Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week. Angie, Good morning, Good
- 7:00morning. How are you. I am doing fine. You got big shoes
- 7:02to fill this week. You know, Hannah has become quite the star on
- 7:05the show. She's been doing it Provide the last year and a half.
- 7:08She she's got her own personalized text questions waiting on her normally when she gets
- 7:13here. Oh really, I know. She informed me that this was this
- 7:16was an event. It is. Indeed, my co host this week is
- 7:20JK, the DJ Joe Kerner, So he's going to be in here with
- 7:25me as well. So well, it's nice to meet Ji. Looks like
- 7:30a handsome young man and yeah, Ozzie is our pet of the Week this
- 7:33weekend. As always. The pictures posted on Dave Island Radio and Facebook and
- 7:38at Dave A seventy on X that's the artist formerly known as twitter Angie tell
- 7:42us all about Ozzie. So Ossie came to our shelter as a stray back
- 7:48in April. He came to us and he is still waiting on his home.
- 7:54All of our staff are not sure why, because he is great with
- 7:58other dogs, he's great kids, and we are pretty sure that he would
- 8:01be fine with cats. He's just a really playful, sweet sweet dog that's
- 8:07just waiting on someone to come and uh make him a happy home. So
- 8:13he's a year old forty three pounds, so he's the perfect medium sized dog
- 8:18and a year old, he still has like all the good qualities of a
- 8:22puppy, meaning he's pretty impressionable. He learns quickly, but he doesn't have
- 8:28all the bad qualities of a puppy, like using the bathroom inside the house,
- 8:31chewing up things, and a quick question, is there any documentation of
- 8:37by the way, I'm sorry, Angie, Yes, okay, I got
- 8:39it right now, Thank you for the correction. Anyways, there any documentation
- 8:43that Aussie barks at the moon? There is not so that there. This
- 8:50is why we don't put him on the air very often. Angie's jokes like
- 8:54that, but as I actually pretty pretty clever. Most a dad joke.
- 8:56It was almost dad joke. Any what kind of dog Azzy is Aie?
- 9:03Not really sure. He has like all the qualities. He's not the size
- 9:07of a husky, similar fur as a husky, got the curly tail.
- 9:11However, he has really floppy ears, so I would guess he's probably got
- 9:16husky in his lineage. But whenever it comes to mixed freeze, I always
- 9:22say they're whatever you wanted, whatever you want. And it was kind of
- 9:24a running joke here on the show because there for a while with Hannah and
- 9:30you know, I love Hannah didat that every week show he said, well,
- 9:31he may have some boxer in him, and it became to the point
- 9:35that people were texting the show when we'd have a cat on the show,
- 9:37Let's say the cat may have some boxer in him. We don't know,
- 9:41We don't know, but he's a beautiful dog and he'd make a great family
- 9:45patt age. You said, he meet him, sized, perfect size,
- 9:46loves kids, loves other dogs, very sweet dog, lots of personality.
- 9:52No indication that he would not like cats, but you can you can test
- 9:54that out and she understand you. Guys are gonna be out of about tomorrow
- 9:58at pet out at South Ridge and also at Liberty Square and Tay's Valley from
- 10:03noon to four a. You're gonna have some great looking animals out there that
- 10:05are eager to join our listeners homes. Correct, We certainly are. We're
- 10:11hoping to you take Aussie with us. That way we can get him out
- 10:13of the shelter as soon as possible. But we will be at both Tay's
- 10:18Valley and South Ridge tetco with adoptable puts and trying to get them all into
- 10:22homes from noon to four. I wish I wasn't allergic. Yeah, that
- 10:26was the first thing with JK when I lined him up to come into guest
- 10:30Hosts this week, Angie, He's said, now do the animals come in
- 10:33studio because I'm quite allergic. So do we have any any animal? Do
- 10:37you have any goldfish or anything up there? And we can get for for
- 10:39JK to kind of help him out a little bit. We unfortunately do not,
- 10:43but if we do have any, I'll be sure to tell him about
- 10:46let you know. Thank you so much. Also, we're just a few
- 10:50weeks away from from Kegs and Canines coming up at the Red Carpet Lounge.
- 10:54I was reading about that last night, do you guys? It's posted on
- 10:58your Facebook page. That's always a big event as well. Yes, and
- 11:01it is a fun and easy way to support Shelter Pet because all you have
- 11:05to do is purchase a ticket. You don't have to dress up fancy or
- 11:09anything like that. All you have to do is come out and drink beer
- 11:11and is probably the easiest way to support Shelter that beer and dogs. What
- 11:16more could you want again? I mean you couldn't. You couldn't ask for
- 11:20anything more than that. Again, all that information is available under your guys
- 11:22a Facebook page. Angie, you did a great job subbing for Hannah,
- 11:26so nice to know the show's in good hands. What Hannah's not here,
- 11:30We'll talk to you soon, Angie. Thanks a lot, nice to meet
- 11:31you, Angie. That's our good friend, Angie Gillawater, new friend,
- 11:35Angie Gillenwater from the from the shelter there the canal, Charleston. You mean
- 11:41association with our adotmi please pet of the week, JK. A good looking
- 11:45critter there, that's for sure. Man, good looking pup. Yeah,
- 11:48now again. Ozzie's a dog's name. He's a one year old male about
- 11:50forty three pounds or so, perfect, as Angie said, medium sized dog.
- 11:56He was brought in as a stray from the Cabin Creek area. Generally
- 12:01speaking, loves kids, loves other dogs, sweet dog, lots of personality.
- 12:05Don't know yet how he feels about cats, but she says there's absolutely
- 12:09zero red flags with Ozzie to indicate that he would not get along with cats
- 12:15or any other creatures in the house. And always it always baffles me when
- 12:20they come. Mean, you know, all animals in my eyes are perfect.
- 12:22I mean, it's just who I am. I not so much on
- 12:24people, but I like animals. And when they have these dogs and cats
- 12:30in some cases to JK, I look at him and I'm like, how's
- 12:33this dog still in the shelter? Yeah? Yeah, somebody should have snatched
- 12:37them up already for sure. Yeah, and hopefully they will so again.
- 12:39The dog is available at the Canal Charleston Humane Association. You can see Ozzie's
- 12:43picture on my Facebook pages Dave Allen Radio or also on the Artists formerly known
- 12:48as Twitter now known as X. The dog's pictures posted there. And if
- 12:52we don't get the dog adopted today, they're gonna be out on the road
- 12:56tomorrow. The shelter folks will be at a couple of area pet code locations.
- 13:01One is at South Ridge and the other at Liberty Square and Tay's Valley
- 13:03from noon to four. And if we don't get Ozzie adopted today, for
- 13:07what I understand, they are going to have Ozzie on the Ozzie's on the
- 13:09road tomorrow, maybe drinking beer next week. Yeah, there you go.
- 13:13It may possibly he'll be at the Red Carpet for Kegs and canines on September
- 13:18of the eighth. Hey, if you're looking for something to do for the
- 13:20whole family this entire weekend, you may want to check out the Putnam Farmer's
- 13:24Market. Now they do that every Saturday from nine am until noon. It's
- 13:28at the lot next to the RBS an Exon and Route thirty four just off
- 13:30the Tay's Valley exit of sixty four, and tomorrow is Kid's day out there.
- 13:35Each kid that comes out with an adult it's going to get four dollars
- 13:41and tokens to buy whatever products that they would like. So what could you
- 13:45get for four bucks these days? Well, well, I guess I'll find
- 13:48out. They do a great job with a farmer's market. So if you
- 13:50get a chance, I usually try to stop buy every week. It's in
- 13:52my neighborhood, So get a chance, you may want to stop buy and
- 13:54check it out tomorrow. And that's again just take that coming off by sixty
- 13:58four from Charleston, just takes the Tay's Valley exit. Hang it right.
- 14:00It's next to area thirty four and the Armies in the Exon there in that
- 14:03big field next to Billy Sunday. So I've given you all the descriptors I
- 14:07can, so you should be a well done. You should be able to
- 14:09find it. JK, the DJ, is my guest host this week.
- 14:13We're going to get to know JK a little bit better a little bit later
- 14:16on in the shows. It will also be playing ten questions. That's coming
- 14:20up a little bit later on. We've also got I don't want to say
- 14:22controversy, because we don't do controversy on Friday's Joe. We don't try to
- 14:26avoid it. But what we are going to do is there is some chatter,
- 14:31if you will, about art Walk in Charleston, and I saw a
- 14:33lot of social media post about it this week saying that for years people have
- 14:37enjoyed art Walk and they've had a glass of wine and well apparently there's been
- 14:41some changes with that. And one of the business owners has been very vocal
- 14:45about this is Chuck Hampshire. And Chuck Hampshire is going to join us when
- 14:48we come back right after this. Five eighty Live is presented and parted by

- 18:25Too Easy to Fail that is coming up this afterdo you know? Artwalk has
- 18:29been one of the most popular events for some time here in Charleston and for
- 18:33business owners and people from not only in the city but also from outside of
- 18:36the city that come in. But there's been a few business owners and people
- 18:41that attend that were a little upset because they've been told that businesses can no
- 18:45longer have alcohol there. Now I'm not talking about restaurants or bars. I'm
- 18:48talking about businesses that had had it. Like the gentleman. I'm going to
- 18:52introduce you here to a matter of fact right now. Chuck Hampshire is the
- 18:56owner of the co owner of the Purple Moon and he joined just right now
- 19:00to talk about this check in morning. Welcome to the Sunday Thanks for having
- 19:03me in. I thank you. You are the co owner of the Purple
- 19:04Min's my wife and I. We we started a little over twenty years ago,
- 19:07actually started the business on our kitchen table and were one. We started
- 19:12online and then went bricks and mortar. So all right, we want to
- 19:15know. I'm going to give you a chance for a free plug here.
- 19:17What exactly is the Purpleman Familiar. We deal in mid century modern furnishings,
- 19:22arch and accessories. I think fifties, sixties retro. That's that's our niche.
- 19:26We've been there. I've been there for twenty years. J Jack loves
- 19:32that that He's going to be doing retro fast next week. Next week in
- 19:36Charleson, we're gonna talk about that a little bit, like So Juicy said,
- 19:37retro. You got him, You got his attention, all right,
- 19:40So give us the history behind art Walk. You've been involved in it for
- 19:42a long time. Been been a little long time. Our art Walk started
- 19:45a little over twenty years ago. Actually it was Callen mcjunkin and a couple
- 19:49of small galleries tailored books was there started it and initially it was very exclusive.
- 19:56It actually the galleries had to have one of a kind original art.
- 20:00It was just a handful of places. Art Emporium moved into downtown. They
- 20:04joined if we came in shortly thereafter, about eighteen nineteen years ago. It
- 20:10grew. It stayed stabled about eight or ten venues for a good number of
- 20:14years. And what exactly is it that goes on at art Well, Well,
- 20:17it's a self guided tour of downtown. Essentially, the shop's open up.
- 20:21There's generally different art exhibits that are brought in special for that or sometimes
- 20:26specials in the store if they're not even necessarily art related. One of the
- 20:30changes that's happened over the years is it was at one time entirely focused on
- 20:34just the art related businesses, right, it actually has expanded way beyond that,
- 20:38and that's been a very good thing, so that virtually all businesses and
- 20:41what we've seen is there's hardly a business downtown that doesn't have some art in
- 20:45it. Even even the smaller shops are bringing in a small local artist and
- 20:49it makes for a real vibrant art community down right. You see all the
- 20:52artists get additional exposure a lot more than what used to be. That's for
- 20:56sure, absolutely absolutely. Now we've had some you know, it's a moving
- 21:00target of of you know, in twenty years, we've seen places come and
- 21:03go, the art Walk grow and shrink. There was a it was primarily
- 21:08managed by the Charleston Area Alliance up until twenty nineteen. At that time,
- 21:14downtown Business has decided we wanted to take it on ourselves and really to open
- 21:19it up. That was really to bring in more venues and allow more people
- 21:22ton because the Alliance wanted only their members to be part of ourt walking,
- 21:26and so there was a bit of conflict. But we've worked that out.
- 21:30But then COVID hit, Yeah, and COVID was just a nightmare and for
- 21:34the shops downtown, everything was closed. Coming back from COVID was a struggle.
- 21:40In twenty one, we we scheduled art walks, then we had a
- 21:44we had a couple then there was a big outbreak again. Actually I think
- 21:47it was in October November big we canceled art walking, partnered with health Right
- 21:52and did a vaccination clinic in the town that night instead of doing art walk.
- 21:57When twenty two came, we began to get a little more into the
- 22:00stride and it felt a little better. Towards the end of twenty two is
- 22:04when we began to find out about this alcohol issue, which we'll get into
- 22:07you. And that's why that I have you here on the show today as
- 22:10best I understand, and if I'm wrong, you can tell me the various
- 22:14businesses like yours and others, you would offer people cocktails they if they if
- 22:18they chose to take from I say cocktails is a bit of a stretch.
- 22:21I think, you know, wine, some of them did some beer,
- 22:23so okay, wine and beer, and it was it wasn't all of them,
- 22:26It wasn't even all the time. And also this is something that doesn't
- 22:30necessarily happen gest during our walk you know. I know in my shop we
- 22:33do we do estate liquidations. We did a real high end jewelry estate liquidation
- 22:37once. We had pieces from the twenties and thirties and it was a high
- 22:41end clientail we brought in. We brought him in an afternoon. We served
- 22:45him champagne and mimosis, because that's that's part of the part of the vibe
- 22:48that gets it, gets it going, get him drunk and telling to buy
- 22:52I can't. It certainly helps getting getting that Amax cart out of the wall
- 22:56if he is going to admit it. That's what I liked about. Well,
- 23:00so we're not selling necessities, we're selling things that want and desire,
- 23:03disposable income doesn't it doesn't help, it doesn't hurt. Okay, So what
- 23:07happened? What happened? What actually it was? After years of this?
- 23:11I mean I've I've been involved in Arn't things in Charleston for forty years and
- 23:15I've seen this happen. That's you know, a few bottles of wine are
- 23:18put out, you know, wine and cheese cubes have been part of art
- 23:21openings and exhibits for Timmy Kernel. Last fall, one of the venues was
- 23:26going to have an anniversary and posted on Facebook that come share a glass of
- 23:32Bubbly with us to celebrate Toaster fifteen years and the ABC came in and said,
- 23:37now you cannot do this. Uh if you serve here, your your
- 23:41business license could be in jeopardy. You could be subject to fines. The
- 23:45Downtown Charleston Association got involved and had some discussions with the ABC. Essentially let
- 23:51us ride out. Twenty two said, well, my petition, but twenty
- 23:55three you can no longer serve unless you're a licensed, licensed business. We're
- 23:59having a little problems figuring out one what kind of license we would we would
- 24:03have. What we've been suggested to us is one cost prohibitive, and and
- 24:07and and and also there's even actually one that was suggested to us. One
- 24:11of the requirements is you can't give it away. You can sell a lot
- 24:15of the ABC's set for sell sales, not necessarily for forgiving away. You
- 24:21know, we're not talking about Look, we're not talking about big blowout parties.
- 24:23We're talking about three or four bottles of wine out for thirty or forty
- 24:26people wandering through a shop. Have you have you had so? So you've
- 24:30done this all this time, and now somebody came in and said, said,
- 24:34I was doing a little research on this on my own last night,
- 24:37Chuck, and what I was able to ascertain was that it looks like there
- 24:41may have been a change in legislation that that you could no longer do this.
- 24:45Well, there's there, there's been, And that's one of the things
- 24:48when the post that kind of got all this gout I put up last week
- 24:52to deal with some information that was bad out there. You know, we
- 24:56came into we got this from the ABC. We kind of said, Okay,
- 24:59we're gon we're gonna I have to look at this and we're gonna have
- 25:00to figure it out. We've had some discussions. We didn't make it a
- 25:03quite frankly, a front burner priority because we also we know there was legislation
- 25:10has has been passed this year that's going to allow for I think it's a
- 25:12different acronym here, but it's Dora in Ohio, door in Ohio. It's
- 25:18yeah, Actually, Huntington's just passed that. Is it Peter or so it's
- 25:21a different it's a differently it's I think it's poda. It's it's some public
- 25:26outdoor drinking area or something like that. Yeah, and what the and so
- 25:30the city will be able to set establish some boundaries and some footprints of that.
- 25:34It's unclear of how that's going to impact our our ability to serve if
- 25:41that occurs. Uh, it certainly might. If we're within that zone,
- 25:44folks would be able to walk into our store carrying it, But aren't they
- 25:48My reading of that right now is they'd have to buy still buy from a
- 25:49licensed facility so they can buy a positive points and maybe be able to walk
- 25:55around the corner in my place with it. And I saw, I'm like
- 25:57you checking. The first time I saw my wife and I were in we
- 26:00were actually in Westerville is where we were outside Columbus, and we kept seeing
- 26:03these signs that said Dora, and I was like, Who's Dora? You
- 26:07know what the heck is going on here? And then we kind of figured
- 26:10out that that's what it was and what they do there is in order to
- 26:12participate, as you said, you mentioned a cup or glass or whatever.
- 26:15You you basically purchased one and then you could go to the different businesses and
- 26:21you could, you know, visit this art place or that art place or
- 26:23do whatever. But they knew that you were doing it right because you had
- 26:26that particular cup with the logo that kept the average guy like our producer Hollywood,
- 26:32Jeff Petty, from walking down the street drinking a Bata Boon's farm or
- 26:34something. You know, that that kept him from doing subsolutely. Absolutely so
- 26:38if you talked to the ABC, We've talked. We've talked to the ABC
- 26:41where and just really we don't see a fit for a license for us.
- 26:45It's kind of where we are. So I think there's a couple one.
- 26:48We're gonna be working this process with the city. Yeah, for the door
- 26:52and see how that's going to impact, you know, as far as we
- 26:55kind of went into twenty three cent, Okay, this is the deal with
- 26:57ABC. We didn't necessarily a huge announcement come to art Walk. There's no
- 27:02booze anymore, because that's not the best marketing strategy in the world. But
- 27:07it's quietly gotten out and what we saw was a lot of rumors and and
- 27:10crazy reasons for why this happened. It's it's ultimately it's bureaucrats being bureaucrats and
- 27:15uh, and we've got to figure out the pieces of this. So we're
- 27:18going to work through the city to see how this works with the zone and
- 27:22then also potentially may need to go to the legislature. Some states have what
- 27:25they call a gallery license. Maryland has this for one hundred dollars a year.
- 27:30You get a license. You can serve for fifteen days fifteen days out
- 27:33of the year. You just notify the ABC here's when it is, and
- 27:36you can do a certain It would be for special events, it would be
- 27:38for special events. It's it's limited based on square Okay, so you couldn't
- 27:41walk in like for example, you could do it when you were doing art
- 27:45walk. But if I walk in on a Wednesday afternoon afternoon at three o'clock
- 27:48and say give me an old fashioned well you don't do cocktails, but give
- 27:51me a bottle of give you a beer or whatever. Yeah, I mean,
- 27:56yeah, that's so there's a way. I mean if if if we
- 27:57need this regulated, which I guess the ABC now has decided that's what we
- 28:02need, then maybe we need to go to legislaturing and carve us out.
- 28:04And then we've seen states that have done this where it's low cost. It's
- 28:08we're not out there. We're not trying to make money off the booze.
- 28:11It's really just something we're trying to do, you know, because you're not
- 28:14selling it selling it. This is this is really just for the conveniences.
- 28:18It's an amenity. It's exactly. It's just being you know, being being
- 28:21being hospitable from the come from out of town for events like our walk things,
- 28:26and this I guess is what I guess it is. I didn't understand
- 28:30because I attend a lot of business after hours types of events in various places,
- 28:33and about fifty percent of them, probably more do have alcohol if you
- 28:38want it. Not a cash bar I'm talking about, you know, And
- 28:41it's never very regularly, it's ever liquor. It's always you can have a
- 28:45beer, you can have a glass of wine, you know, white claw
- 28:48or whatever the hot thing is, right, you have something like that.
- 28:51But the way I read this, I guess that's no longer allowed. That's
- 28:56the question we have. We also are not we're not sure this is being
- 28:59in from best I can tell, is not being enforced and uniformly around the
- 29:03state. I think there's some places in Lewisburg they have continued to do this,
- 29:07Huntington, Morgantown. So we've got a lot of questions about that too,
- 29:11of how is this enforcement going to occur? Because what's what's the difference
- 29:17of me in my shop on Quarrier Street you come in, Dave and I
- 29:21offer you a beer, or the lawyer upstairs that's given his client a scotch.
- 29:25Because that we know, I can guarantee you most of the lawyers down
- 29:27to have a bar set up in their office. So it's a you know,
- 29:32we're not sure exactly where we fit in, and that's where we are
- 29:34right now, and that's whether we try to explain was that we're looking at
- 29:37this. We're going to try to find a solution. There's some things in
- 29:40play with the PODA and other things that may make make a difference and help
- 29:45this, but it's ultimately a problem for us. I did see last night
- 29:48and I was just scrolling through Facebook, and it's some one of the pages
- 29:52that they have for Huntington. It's like a Downtown Huntington Association something like that.
- 29:56Had actually commented and said, we are the first municipal in West Virginia
- 30:00to offer this PODA because as it's called, Yeah, and so so do
- 30:03you think Charleston will eventually And I think that well, yeah, matter of
- 30:07fact, if you talked I talked to him to the mayor's office about it.
- 30:10I've talked Chad Robinson. I think it's going to go through his committee
- 30:12in Chad and I chat Chid and I have talked about some of the basics
- 30:15of this, and we're going to talk more and and my understanding is that's
- 30:21going to come up I think sometimes September October, hopefully being hopefully being placed
- 30:25by the by the holidays, because that would be great for downtown. You
- 30:29know. The main thing is is, you know, art Walk has had
- 30:32some struggles coming back, and we're going to be taking a look at it
- 30:34over the next few months too of what does it look like moving ahead,
- 30:40because it's it's a different environment. The footprint of Charleston, Downtown Charleston has
- 30:44expanded, and that's another thing that's happened. We were primarily a Capitol Street
- 30:48and the Long Corrier. You know, now that this Summer Street expansion has
- 30:52happened that the footprint is actually even bigger. So we're moving more people around
- 30:56and moving them differently. And it's important that folks support down down Charleston because
- 31:00they're small businesses really need that support right now. All right, Well,
- 31:03Chuck's been a pleasure and I've learned a lot and having you on the show
- 31:07and doing the research that I did. You got a great place there with
- 31:11the purple Moon, and we always love to give shout outs all those those
- 31:14local businesses, not only yours, but the others that take part in this
- 31:18best of luck will hopefully we'll be able to get things worked out. We'll
- 31:21talk to you soon, thinks so I appreciated hang out with me one second.

- 34:58Today Texas Day. The ABC also enforced to seem silly policy the Easton pub
- 35:02Cross. The bars were still busy on St. Patrick's Day, but the
- 35:06crawling with beverages in hand was not existent, has only heard businesses all over
- 35:10town. The only thing I would say to that is, and I'm not
- 35:13a lawyer, I'm not an ABC expert or anything like that, is I
- 35:16would think that, you know, I know, I do know people that
- 35:20work for the ABC good friends of mine, and I understand both sides of
- 35:22the equation. They have a job to do, and they are in the
- 35:25law enforcement, not really law enforcement, in the enforcement business, I'll put
- 35:30it that way. Yeah, And so it sounds to me like the confusion
- 35:35here is maybe emanating from the Capitol or someplace like that, making sure that
- 35:40we get everything lined out with them so we can have people doing whatever they
- 35:45do. I can tell you though, as I mentioned, you know,
- 35:46I visit a lot of the different chambers of commerce with my job, and
- 35:52alcohol is a part of it, and it's free. Not not for me
- 35:54because I'm driving, but it is a part of it, and and it's
- 36:00free in most of them. And so apparently they've been listen, listen to
- 36:05me, chambers. If you're giving out free alcohol, you're in violation according
- 36:07to unless you have a license. You have to have a license, all
- 36:09right. JK the DJ is my co host. How in the world did
- 36:15you become JK the DJ oh Man? Okay, let's go way back,
- 36:19way back machine, way back anyway. Man. I was a teenager and
- 36:22was the best man at my best friend's wedding and walked into the wedding reception
- 36:27and I saw a guy standing over there playing music. The lights were going,
- 36:30the beat was thumping, and I recognized him as super duper Charlie Cooper,
- 36:36and I was like, wow, man, this whatever he's doing,
- 36:39I want in. Of course, I've been listening to him for years and
- 36:43he was my local radio here, a super duper. Did you ever meet
- 36:45him? I did? I did later in life, man, generous soul,
- 36:50brilliant man. I did some voiceover work for Charlie with his company.
- 36:54And when he called me mix yeah. And when he called me and as
- 36:58said, wait a minute, Charlie, you want me to do my voice
- 37:01that cracks constantly like a you know, like Peter Brady here from time to
- 37:06time, and you want me to do voiceover work. But he was able
- 37:07to get me a little work doing some voiceover work. God bless him.
- 37:10He was a great guy. Oh he had the voice of God, I
- 37:13think. And what a great wit. And so generous for this time and
- 37:15everything. And I walked up to him and I said, look, I
- 37:19don't know what you're doing, but I know I want to be a part
- 37:22of this. And he took me under his wing and was so very like
- 37:25I said, very generous with his time and his expertise and no kidding.
- 37:30He was a brilliant man, wonderful personality and got me started. And I
- 37:35guess the rest is history. I at one point I knew I wasn't going
- 37:37to be a relief picture for the Reds. We're passing guard for the Lakers.
- 37:42Those are my you know, my first two loves baseball and basketball.
- 37:45So I thought, man, let's try this music thing. See what happens.
- 37:47And so how did it start? I mean, what did you have?
- 37:49Because now your company it's Triple A Entertainment? Is that what you're doing?
- 37:52Okay, cheap plug there. We'll get into that a little bit later
- 37:57on, but it's it's not I mean, what was it like then as
- 38:00as compared to what it is now? Because we're probably talking two turntables and
- 38:05a microphone? Is that right? Is a true story? Beck said?
- 38:07The best? Oh yeah, two cheap, the cheapest turntables I could find
- 38:10because I didn't have the money for the good ones. Man. The good
- 38:13ones were even in those days, back in the eighties, were five or
- 38:15six hundred dollars a piece. Man. Now they're like fifteen hundred, two
- 38:20thousand dollars a piece. The tables that actually do nothing but vinyl. I'm
- 38:22sure you can digitize them somehow now, but I haven't full with turntables in
- 38:25a long time. But yeah, the cheapest I mean that the first gig
- 38:30I did, I didn't even have a mixer. And the first mixer I
- 38:32did buy it was at radio shack. It was so cheap that it was
- 38:36battery operated. Okay, I was gonna say, I bet, I bet
- 38:38you had the same mixer that I did when I tried to do this back
- 38:42when I was in high school. But mine wasn't battery operated. I'll say
- 38:45that it actually plugged in. Thank god, I had fresh batteries on hand
- 38:47all the time. Man. But I was kind of an audio file to
- 38:51begin with on about a really expensive pair of speakers at a stereo store in
- 38:54Kanalla City, and already had those in my possession when I started talking to
- 38:58Charlie about becoming a d JA, and he saw them. He come up
- 39:00with to my apartment one time and saw them. He's like, well,
- 39:02as long as you don't mind carrying them. Boy, those things were big
- 39:06and now they're lighter. Way. Of course, you can get big,
- 39:07heavy stuff now too, but the stuff now was you know, digital and
- 39:12much lighter. Okay, it's gonna say, so what does what does your
- 39:15rig look like now compared to what it was then? Well, it's big
- 39:17and heavy, yeah, just a different kind of big and heavy exactly.
- 39:21Yeah, the quality is much greater. The digital sounds are fantastic. It
- 39:24just blows you away, the clarity of all the nuances of every song that
- 39:29you play. Of course, I'll play it so loud that you can you
- 39:31can detect the nuances. But you know, we're in a disco or a
- 39:36dance floor, you know, trying to keep it rock and so it's not
- 39:37the sound qualities not that critical when you get it up really that high.
- 39:42What kind of events do you typically do? I mean weddings, see man,
- 39:45Yeah, lots of weddings. Company wide, We're probably going to do
- 39:49about eighty or ninety weddings by the end of twenty twenty three. We average
- 39:52about seventy or eighty. But I'll tell you if folks are still trying to
- 39:54make up for the COVID thing, trying to make up for lost time as
- 39:59far as having fun, and because I would say it pretty much killed your
- 40:00business and several other people too. Oh yeah, we're in the social gathering
- 40:05business, not the social distancing business. So it really put a crimp in
- 40:07my style, that's for sure. And you're still recovering from that. I
- 40:10would imagine, oh, well, you'll never fully recover. But thank goodness
- 40:14that folks are are are eager to get back to the dance floor, and
- 40:17that makes me happy. Is all you do reunions and yeah, a lot
- 40:22of wedding receptions, reunions, nightclub gigs, school dances. Talk about this,
- 40:27gibl Proms coming up. Was gonna say, talk about this what you're
- 40:30doing, And I'm oh, yeah, Yeah. Marty Graw Casino and Resort
- 40:32Cross Lanes. They have a lounge called Louise. We've got a big show
- 40:36there tonight. We play a lot of pop dance music. It's sort of
- 40:39an open format thing. I mean, we'll play country or olddies or whatever,
- 40:44but it's it's mainly whatever. We'll put people on the dance floor and
- 40:46we always have a good time. The crowds are big and we have a
- 40:50blast. Marty grow Casino and Resort. Tonight at nine o'clock, you're invited.
- 40:52Man, nine o'clock's past my bedtime. Do you do like a five
- 40:55o'clock show? I can. I I'll show up the five o'clocks. What's
- 41:01your favorite part of the whole DJ thing? Jking? Oh, the adrenaline
- 41:04rush, bud all the way down the line. That's the reason why I'm
- 41:07still doing it to this day after many, many decades. Is the buzz
- 41:10I get from at the adrenaline buzz man, the rush? All right,
- 41:14but you also did your time in radio. It's funny because I had Tim
- 41:17Brady on the show yesterday from the from the Charleston Convention visitor Beer. Tim's
- 41:22an old radio guy, worked at Metro News, worked out at the Clarksburg
- 41:24area where he's from in that area, and I asked him yesterday. I
- 41:29think the first question before I even talked about the economic impact of REGATTA was
- 41:32I asked him about his time in radio. And as soon and Tim's been
- 41:36out of radio for years, and as soon as I said something about radio.
- 41:40He took off. Man, he was telling telling me stories about doing
- 41:44telling the listeners stories about doing high school football with Travis Jones and going on
- 41:47the air with Fred and doing that whole thing. Well, tell us about
- 41:51your radio career. Well we got to go back to super duper Charlie Cooper
- 41:53again. Man. After I got a few gigs under my belt doing parties,
- 41:57private events and a couple of nightclubs at Charlie, help me get a
- 42:00radio job, please. And so he knew Doug. He knew all the
- 42:02pds at every radio station in the market where he was an intimate friend with
- 42:07everybody in this area. And that's the reason why Admix's broadcast was so successful.
- 42:12They went to him regularly to do the spots. Anyway, he introduced
- 42:15me to Doug Yannick, the PD at the time at WVSR, and they
- 42:21had just gone from the Music of Your Life Dave to HR top forty.
- 42:25And what time frame were talking here about? What year this is? Nineteen
- 42:30eighty two, eighty two? Yeah, And of course when you're a starter
- 42:36like me, an ambitious young starter, they put you on midnights on the
- 42:38weekends. That's the crappiest shift of them all. I loved it, couldn't
- 42:44get enough of it, and worked up through radio. I did probably every
- 42:46shift at the radio station at one time or another over the fifteen years and
- 42:51I was there. I was even in sales. You know old DJ's never
- 42:53die. They're just going to say it. Yeah. Well, and it
- 42:57is true what you said, we'll do this. We'll take a break to
- 43:00do ten questions. I want to talk about Retrofest that you're a big part
- 43:01of next week, But it is true about about radio. I mean,
- 43:07this has been a passion of mind since I was seventeen. Well, I
- 43:08actually I started when I was seventeen. It's been a passion of mind since
- 43:12I was about five or six years old. And you talked about doing that
- 43:15midnight to six, I did my midnight to six shifs. My first ship
- 43:17was actually six am to noon as a high school kid, uh in a
- 43:22in a small AM radio station which is no longer in existence in my hometown,
- 43:27w log em uh and uh and and my my job was to play
- 43:30gospel music and to put preachers on the air. None of them came into
- 43:34the studio live. They were all on cassette or on reel to reel,
- 43:37actually reel to reel and the kind of transition to cassette. So that was
- 43:40my first job, and I would I would have done it for free.
- 43:44And looking back now, I think I did some days. Uh, I
- 43:46think I literally did it for free. But but I had fun. And
- 43:50that's and that's the one thread that keeps all of us old radio guys,
- 43:55I think together, is this is the fun. I mean, I left
- 43:59the business, I came back done other things, and I mean I'm in
- 44:02my thirty fifth year now, and this is my life. I've had other
- 44:07jobs, and I have other jobs. I have two other jobs, as
- 44:08a matter of fact, other than this one. It's my life. Man,
- 44:12He's working for a living, that's for sure. No, I actually
- 44:14have to do that too. I have to work for a living to pay
- 44:15for my one hour hobby I have JK. The DJ's with Us five eighty
