- 2:32Speaker 2: a powerful out of talking to his old friend, Inspector Faraday.
- 2:35Speaker 2: It's a stag session for Mike's assistant, Phyllis Knight has
- 2:38Speaker 2: gone home early this evening.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Of course, Paraday, I don't know much about the case
- 2:42Speaker 4: except what I've read in the papers, but it seems
- 2:45Speaker 4: to me that you're going after the wrong.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Guy, Mike.
- 2:47Speaker 5: This Joe has got a prison record as long as
- 2:49Speaker 5: a kangaroo's tale. Why should he sidestep a little thing
- 2:52Speaker 5: like murder?
- 2:53Speaker 4: Yes, because he has got a prison record as long
- 2:55Speaker 4: as a kangaroo's tale. Look, I remember a case back
- 2:59Speaker 4: in New York, almost a coffin copy of this app.
- 3:02Speaker 4: I've got some newspaper companies on it in the file,
- 3:03Speaker 4: so I'll read them to your just a second.
- 3:06Speaker 5: You don't get the point, Mike. This killing is gruesome, horrible,
- 3:10Speaker 5: will take a hardened criminal to carry it through.
- 3:13Speaker 4: I've gone it there here in the files, somewhere now,
- 3:16Speaker 4: Phil could turn right to it.
- 3:18Speaker 3: She went home kind of early this evening, didn't.
- 3:20Speaker 4: She Yeah, she's got a girlfriend staying up at the
- 3:22Speaker 4: copping with her. Went home to help her pack.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Up friend from out of town. Uh huh.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Girl had a fight with her fiance and wants to
- 3:29Speaker 4: play him for a few days.
- 3:31Speaker 5: The old feminine trick would buy forever till next Saturday night.
- 3:36Speaker 3: I'll get it, Mike. Hello, you're still there. This is
- 3:42Speaker 3: Faraday Phyllis. Mike's ransacking his files. I'll get them. Point.
- 3:46Speaker 3: You better hear this.
- 3:48Speaker 6: Maybe it's your business.
- 3:49Speaker 3: What's wrong? Girl? You sound scared? Blue.
- 3:51Speaker 7: I know something's happened.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I don't dare look all right, but what is it?
- 3:55Speaker 4: There?
- 3:56Speaker 3: Wait?
- 3:56Speaker 4: Wait a minute, let me talk to her here.
- 3:57Speaker 3: She sounds like she's gonna cry.
- 4:00Speaker 7: Hello, angel, mine, get over here quick.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Now Wait a minute, calm down, honey, Now tell me
- 4:04Speaker 4: what's wrong.
- 4:06Speaker 7: You know Lewis was leaving my apartments made, and I
- 4:08Speaker 7: came home to help the pack.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:10Speaker 6: Sure, sure, she's not here, at least I don't think so.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Now, please, Angel, wait a minute, I can't tell what
- 4:14Speaker 4: you're talking about.
- 4:15Speaker 6: Well, I found her trunk already packed and locked.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think, ye what, honey, what.
- 4:22Speaker 6: I think her body's inside?
- 4:32Speaker 7: Well, at last I thought you'd never get here.
- 4:37Speaker 4: We came as fast as we could.
- 4:39Speaker 7: Yeah, where's the trunk in the bedroom?
- 4:42Speaker 4: All right, Now, tell me what happened.
- 4:44Speaker 7: Well, I found the hall door off the lock, so
- 4:46Speaker 7: I expected she'd be right back. I kept waiting, and
- 4:48Speaker 7: then I started to worry. She had that row with Nelson.
- 4:51Speaker 7: He threatened her.
- 4:53Speaker 4: You see what I mean, paraday, a woman's intuition.
- 4:56Speaker 7: Well, the baggage man came. He started to take the trunk,
- 4:59Speaker 7: but then then I heard it. But what Something slumped inside?
- 5:04Speaker 7: And the trunk seems so heavy. I I told the
- 5:06Speaker 7: man to leave it. We weren't going to send it
- 5:08Speaker 7: after all.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Oh great.
- 5:09Speaker 7: I looked at it real close, and and when I
- 5:11Speaker 7: saw the padlock. Oh that's when I phoned you, Mike.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Well, I see it. This mere blood on the lock.
- 5:19Speaker 4: That's not unusual, honey, Maybe she cut her hand when
- 5:21Speaker 4: she closed the trunk.
- 5:22Speaker 7: Oh, for heaven's sakes, I'm no child. Look here in
- 5:25Speaker 7: this closet. There there are all OAS's dresses still on
- 5:29Speaker 7: the hangars. They weren't packed in the trunk.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Mean he hasn't finished packing.
- 5:34Speaker 7: I thought of that tool, Mike. I started to push
- 5:36Speaker 7: the trunk back against the wall, but it wouldn't budge.
- 5:39Speaker 7: There's something inside of it, and it isn't clothing.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Well, let's see, it's looaded with something.
- 5:51Speaker 7: There there You hear that something slumped inside just as
- 5:55Speaker 7: you tipped the trunk.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Fair They Okay, I guess the only way we can
- 5:58Speaker 4: satisfy you is to open it if we can find
- 6:00Speaker 4: the key.
- 6:01Speaker 7: Here, I've got it. It's here in her purse. That's
- 6:03Speaker 7: another thing that scared me, Mike, lois is handbag just
- 6:05Speaker 7: laying here on the dressing table.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Let's have it feel, honey, wasn't that the hold?
- 6:12Speaker 3: Or? Of course there's your girl now?
- 6:14Speaker 7: Oh, oh, it's a bad time that you. No, No,
- 6:19Speaker 7: it's Nelson.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Let's see. Yeah, you're looking for somebody partner.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Oh, I didn't think there was anybody. You always walk
- 6:28Speaker 3: right in when there's nobody home.
- 6:30Speaker 4: I meant I thought Loss was here alone. I'll come
- 6:34Speaker 4: back again. No, no, no, no, we'd like you to stay.
- 6:37Speaker 4: She may be in any minute. I really come in
- 6:40Speaker 4: a minute, come on in. We'd like to talk to ourselves.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Come on, come on. I don't understand you're friends of laws.
- 6:47Speaker 7: Yes, this is Mike Shane and Inspector Faraday.
- 6:50Speaker 3: I don't understand. You don't have to, okay, Phil, Let's
- 6:53Speaker 3: have that key here. Thanks?
- 6:56Speaker 8: Hey, here, what are you doing?
- 6:57Speaker 3: That's Lowis's trunk.
- 6:58Speaker 8: You have any right?
- 6:59Speaker 4: Maybe not, but we like to open surprise packages.
- 7:03Speaker 7: Oh oh, I hope I'm wrong. I hope it's a mistake.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Let's swing her open.
- 7:14Speaker 7: Honey, Yeah, what what's inside?
- 7:19Speaker 9: No, no, don't look. I'm afraid you were right.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Karen is on his way.
- 7:40Speaker 7: It doesn't seem real. Just a few hours ago I
- 7:44Speaker 7: was talking to her.
- 7:45Speaker 3: And now I know it's hard to take you, young fellow.
- 7:49Speaker 3: What's your name? Nelson Carter? Supposed to be the girl's fiance. Huh.
- 7:55Speaker 3: You don't seem to be particularly upset. I'm stunned.
- 7:59Speaker 4: What Yeah, what brought you here? I came to see lawasie.
- 8:04Speaker 4: I was here this afternoon.
- 8:05Speaker 8: We had another fight.
- 8:07Speaker 4: I came back to apologize.
- 8:09Speaker 7: That's something new. First time you ever apologized for anything.
- 8:13Speaker 7: He drove the poor girl half crazy.
- 8:15Speaker 8: It was her fault.
- 8:16Speaker 3: She would listen to me.
- 8:18Speaker 4: I was right from the verse of.
- 8:19Speaker 7: Oh sure, so right. You never let her have a
- 8:21Speaker 7: thought of her own. You hounded her with your rightness.
- 8:24Speaker 7: That's why she moved in with me, to get away
- 8:26Speaker 7: from you and your pestering phone calls and your fight.
- 8:28Speaker 3: That's a lie.
- 8:29Speaker 4: You came between us.
- 8:30Speaker 8: Laws told me this afternoon.
- 8:31Speaker 3: You said she should forget me.
- 8:33Speaker 7: I told her so at breakfast. She couldn't. She was
- 8:37Speaker 7: still in love with you. She was going back to
- 8:40Speaker 7: her apartment tomorrow morning.
- 8:41Speaker 3: There's something I don't get. But Lois was using Phil's
- 8:44Speaker 3: apartment as a soda hide on. How did this fellow
- 8:47Speaker 3: know she was here?
- 8:48Speaker 4: That's it's also ours. Then What time did you come
- 8:51Speaker 4: here this afternoon?
- 8:53Speaker 3: Why about four thirty? The girl's been dead three or
- 8:57Speaker 3: four hours.
- 8:58Speaker 8: Say look here.
- 8:58Speaker 4: If you're trying to pin this on me, you are crazy.
- 9:00Speaker 7: Maybe Lois told me about your insane temper. You threatened
- 9:04Speaker 7: to kill her.
- 9:04Speaker 4: I did not. Oh you're a pack of fools, But
- 9:09Speaker 4: I think I do know who did it.
- 9:11Speaker 7: Yeah, Oh, wait a minute, who can that be?
- 9:16Speaker 4: It's too soon for the counter. I'll answer. Good evening.
- 9:23Speaker 10: I'm sorry the body of this hour, but we had
- 9:25Speaker 10: some trouble about a pickup at this address.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Oh what kind of a pickup?
- 9:29Speaker 3: Why?
- 9:29Speaker 4: A trunk?
- 9:31Speaker 10: And the traffic investigated for the transfer company. Heave one
- 9:34Speaker 10: of our drivers a pickup ordered this apartment, but he
- 9:37Speaker 10: didn't bring it. In fact, he's disappeared.
- 9:39Speaker 7: Wait a minute, I can explain part of it. I
- 9:43Speaker 7: told your driver I changed my mind. I didn't want
- 9:45Speaker 7: the trunk sent.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Oh, oh, I see you. Oh you're missed for this night.
- 9:49Speaker 4: That's right, haven't I yet? Haven't I met you somewhere before?
- 9:52Speaker 4: Your voice sounds familian?
- 9:54Speaker 3: Ordered mister shame. You used to hear it every day
- 9:57Speaker 3: going up, Sir florist.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Please, I'm a bit of operator in the rest building.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Well, I'm sorry, I disturbed. You were just trying to
- 10:05Speaker 3: locate that driver. Good night.
- 10:08Speaker 4: Yeah didn't I.
- 10:11Speaker 7: That's funny. Why should a baggage company driver disappear right
- 10:16Speaker 7: after he came for this trunk?
- 10:18Speaker 4: I wondered?
- 10:19Speaker 5: All right, kids, let's get back to business now. Mister Carter,
- 10:22Speaker 5: you started to say you knew the killer.
- 10:24Speaker 8: Yeah, Lois is old boss Joseph Spiegel. He's ahead of
- 10:28Speaker 8: the Spiegel Chemical laboratories. She told me this afternoon he
- 10:30Speaker 8: was coming to see her.
- 10:31Speaker 7: Yeah, but he doesn't know she was here. Lois quitter
- 10:34Speaker 7: job with him last week.
- 10:35Speaker 3: As soon as he did know. Why should that next
- 10:37Speaker 3: boss want to kill a.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Girl because he's a crook.
- 10:40Speaker 8: I used to work in Spiegel's laboratory, and I discovered
- 10:42Speaker 8: he was stealing formulas from other companies, so I quit.
- 10:45Speaker 3: But not loss Anna.
- 10:46Speaker 8: She was his private secretary, and our boss was just
- 10:48Speaker 8: the soul of honor.
- 10:50Speaker 4: That's what started off fighting.
- 10:51Speaker 7: Yes, but when she learned you were right, she did
- 10:53Speaker 7: quit three days ago.
- 10:55Speaker 3: All right, but it sounds like a pretty flimsy reason
- 10:58Speaker 3: to kill a girl, not if Lawis had the goods
- 10:59Speaker 3: on it.
- 11:00Speaker 8: He wanted to stop her tongue.
- 11:02Speaker 4: You weren't fighting about that this afternoon.
- 11:04Speaker 3: No.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Now, she told me she was.
- 11:06Speaker 8: Gonna go to work for another chemical company. I told
- 11:08Speaker 8: her when I married, I didn't want my wife working. Well,
- 11:11Speaker 8: we've both got pretty mad. She said she'd never married me.
- 11:13Speaker 7: I can imagine how you took that with your conceit.
- 11:16Speaker 3: How about it, Mike, I don't know.
- 11:19Speaker 4: I'm a little worried. Paraday. This is Phil's apartment. She's
- 11:22Speaker 4: been living here alone up till the past few days. Yeah,
- 11:25Speaker 4: Lewis and Phyllis are about the same height, same color hair.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Maybe maybe somebody thought he was killing Phyllis.
- 11:33Speaker 7: Huh, who'd want you? I haven't an enemy in the world.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Oh, you've got hundreds of angels as many as I've gotten.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Mike Chane and Phyllis Knight have sent plenty of lugs
- 11:40Speaker 4: up the river.
- 11:41Speaker 7: Yeah, but Lois and I don't really look alike. Mike,
- 11:43Speaker 7: a killer would be awfully certain before he did it.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Why should he, Honey, yours is the only name on
- 11:48Speaker 4: the mailbox. If some crook hired a gunman to come
- 11:51Speaker 4: to this address and knock off the girl living in
- 11:53Speaker 4: an apartment six sixth.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Less and Mike, bad stuff doesn't happen in San Francisco.
- 11:58Speaker 5: Those are the old al Capone days.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Well, maybe I'm a nervous Nelly. I just don't want
- 12:03Speaker 4: Phil running any danger.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Mike.
- 12:04Speaker 7: Yes, a minute, look here here this ash tray.
- 12:09Speaker 4: I see, mister cotton.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Do you smoke? But uh yes, uh pipe?
- 12:15Speaker 4: Oh there's a cigar butt in this ash tray.
- 12:18Speaker 8: Spiegel, he smokes him all the time.
- 12:20Speaker 2: I told you he was coming here.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Maybe we should check that right now. You know where
- 12:23Speaker 3: he lives.
- 12:23Speaker 8: Yeah, he's got an apartment of his plant. It's next
- 12:25Speaker 8: to the laboratory that's on Bay Street.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Okay, suppose Phil and Imosi over there right now and
- 12:30Speaker 4: swap formulas with doctor Spiegord.
- 12:31Speaker 3: And if the carner gets through here in time, I'll
- 12:33Speaker 3: join you.
- 12:33Speaker 4: Oh, mister Shane, have you got a gun? You think
- 12:37Speaker 4: I'll need it?
- 12:38Speaker 2: You might.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Spiegel is a huge man with a cunning, fiendish mine. Well,
- 12:44Speaker 4: thanks for the warning. I'll be ready with a few
- 12:46Speaker 4: Shane Nannigans of my own.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Just a moment, will rejoin Mike and Phillas in their adventures.

- 14:46Speaker 2: into the night through an open door the entrance to
- 14:49Speaker 2: the Spiegel Chemical Laboratories. In the doorway is the huge
- 14:52Speaker 2: silhouette of a man.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Shane Michael Shane. Yes, sir, I do not know you, Sir,
- 14:58Speaker 4: I'm aware of that doctor Spiegel with miss night Than.
- 15:00Speaker 4: I would like to talk to you. It's very important.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Impossible tonight. I'm working in my laboratory.
- 15:04Speaker 7: It's about Lois Labors.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Doctor Lewis. Oh, come in close the door please, we
- 15:12Speaker 4: will talk in the laboratory. I must get back to
- 15:16Speaker 4: my experiment. It's way please, thank you.
- 15:20Speaker 7: Cheapers. He is a giant mike and.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Those thick glasses make him look like a movie hammer man.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Mister Shane, you are a detective. How did you know that?
- 15:31Speaker 7: Well?
- 15:31Speaker 4: I rather expected Lewis might talk to someone. She's a
- 15:34Speaker 4: very neurotic girl. She imagines things. I'm afraid she's passed
- 15:38Speaker 4: that doctor Spiegel. She's dead, dead, murdered. It's a pity.
- 15:45Speaker 4: She had a fine brain, but too much imagination. My laboratory.
- 15:52Speaker 4: I caution you both not to handle the tubes or retorts.
- 15:54Speaker 4: They are very fretgile, golly.
- 15:58Speaker 7: It's it's an elaborate place. What are you experimenting on?
- 16:02Speaker 4: That? Madam? Is my business? Doctor? I believe you knew
- 16:06Speaker 4: Nelson Carter. Lois fiance. He used to work here, capable,
- 16:10Speaker 4: but a wild temper and very jealous of you.
- 16:14Speaker 7: Perhaps, yes, I.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Used to take Lois to dinner so I could continue
- 16:19Speaker 4: my work without interruption. Nelson misunderstood. Yes, I should not
- 16:25Speaker 4: be surprised if he killed her. Perhaps you saw Lois
- 16:30Speaker 4: this afternoon, doctor, about what time? They're very good detective?
- 16:35Speaker 4: About the five o'clock, I would say.
- 16:37Speaker 7: How did you know she was staying in my apartment?
- 16:39Speaker 4: One moment? There is trouble with his retort?
- 16:43Speaker 3: Letter?
- 16:44Speaker 4: Better, how did I know? It's very simple? Lois telephoned
- 16:50Speaker 4: me her last paycheck was incorrect. I brought her a
- 16:53Speaker 4: new one.
- 16:54Speaker 7: Is that all you want to see her about?
- 16:57Speaker 4: Also? I asked her to come back an excellent secretary.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Mister Shane, what are you doing just admiring your laundry
- 17:06Speaker 4: in the sink laundry? Does your experiment include breaching of
- 17:11Speaker 4: blood soaked handkerchiefs? Doctor good heavens, Yes, they are my handkerchiefs. Yes,
- 17:17Speaker 4: but the blood is not from Lois's veins. She was
- 17:21Speaker 4: strangled and stabbed out by a sharp instrument, doctor, like
- 17:25Speaker 4: the surgical knife here, Perhaps I show you how I
- 17:30Speaker 4: use that knife in this cage.
- 17:36Speaker 7: Rats, hundreds of.
- 17:37Speaker 4: Them, one hundred, madam disease, very sick rats. When my
- 17:42Speaker 4: experiments are concluded, they go in here into this bim
- 17:50Speaker 4: Ooh no, very dramatic, doctor, But it doesn't fool us. Sure,
- 17:58Speaker 4: sure you wanted those to come back to work. But
- 18:00Speaker 4: she told you she was going to another chemical company.
- 18:03Speaker 4: That scared you, doctor, if she told about your stolen
- 18:06Speaker 4: formulas and your other crokerry. She did talk, and I
- 18:09Speaker 4: thought this was a trick. Don't you rety your gun,
- 18:12Speaker 4: mister Shane. My end is already in my pocket.
- 18:14Speaker 7: You killed her, She's not dead.
- 18:17Speaker 4: It's a trick to get.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Something on me.
- 18:19Speaker 4: Get out, get out of your pose. You now, you
- 18:31Speaker 4: will forget you ever came here. You will drop this investigation.
- 18:36Speaker 4: I don't take orders from you, doctor Spiegel. This time
- 18:38Speaker 4: you will. Your young lady has sense. If you have
- 18:42Speaker 4: not good night.
- 18:45Speaker 7: Oh. I thought he was going to keep us in
- 18:48Speaker 7: there and experiment on us.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Yes, he's a cold blooded baby.
- 18:53Speaker 7: H Hey the inspector there, he's part in that police.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Car with Nelson.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it's got here in time to see the bums rush.
- 19:04Speaker 3: One of the odds.
- 19:05Speaker 4: I don't know expect that he's his devilish enough to
- 19:07Speaker 4: commit murder.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Should I take him in for questioning?
- 19:09Speaker 4: No, no, not yet, not yet. He'll be here. He
- 19:11Speaker 4: doesn't scare out.
- 19:12Speaker 7: Mike found handkerchief soaking with blood. He said he was
- 19:15Speaker 7: experimenting with rests.
- 19:16Speaker 4: I think he was sincere though he figured we were
- 19:19Speaker 4: on the trail of those stolen formula.
- 19:20Speaker 3: He killed her. I tell you, if the police don't
- 19:22Speaker 3: get him, I will stop acting. You're too dead anxious.
- 19:25Speaker 4: Dependent on Spiel, Yes, yes, and the good doctor through
- 19:27Speaker 4: the honor. Right back at Nelson, I'm on the fence.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Spiegel had the motive, Nelson had the jealousy and the
- 19:34Speaker 4: temper to do it. Each saw the girl about the
- 19:36Speaker 4: time she died.
- 19:37Speaker 7: Mike, if you ask me, you're passing up a bit.
- 19:41Speaker 7: The killer stuff lows into the trunk so her body
- 19:43Speaker 7: could be smuggled out of the building. Find where the
- 19:46Speaker 7: trunk was going, and perhaps we'll have the address of
- 19:48Speaker 7: the murderer.
- 19:48Speaker 3: But she ordered the trunk picked up herself.
- 19:50Speaker 4: Phil, maybe she didn't. Anyway, it's worth a try, hopping Angel,
- 19:55Speaker 4: we're heading for that transfer company.
- 20:09Speaker 3: We appreciate it. So you're coming down and open the
- 20:11Speaker 3: office at this time of the night.
- 20:12Speaker 11: Un lucky my wife saw you were a policeman. She'd
- 20:14Speaker 11: never let me out of the house. This is our
- 20:18Speaker 11: dispatch office.
- 20:18Speaker 4: Oh, by the way, have you located your missing driver?
- 20:22Speaker 3: Missing driver?
- 20:23Speaker 4: I don't understand why your traffic investigator came to the apartment.
- 20:28Speaker 4: The driver that was to pick up the trunk had disappeared.
- 20:30Speaker 4: He was checking up.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Well, that's impossible.
- 20:33Speaker 11: All of our men checked into that, and we don't
- 20:35Speaker 11: have a what did you call him a traffic investigator.
- 20:37Speaker 7: Mike, he was a fake.
- 20:40Speaker 4: It's not so good. Probably never ran an elevator in
- 20:43Speaker 4: the rust building either.
- 20:44Speaker 3: This thing is getting screwy over the minute. Oh, here
- 20:46Speaker 3: we are.
- 20:47Speaker 11: Here's the pickup order on the trunk.
- 20:49Speaker 3: So under the name, Oh yes, Phyllis.
- 20:52Speaker 7: Knights, not under Lois Lavers.
- 20:55Speaker 11: Let's see it was a full order. We see five
- 20:59Speaker 11: twenty five PM trunk to be sent to nine oh
- 21:02Speaker 11: five three Jennifer Street.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Seems to me I've heard the address before, nine.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Five three Jennifer, nine five three Jennifer. Yeah, there's something
- 21:11Speaker 4: about it, I should hope.
- 21:12Speaker 7: So it's the address of Michael Shane.
- 21:30Speaker 4: I was right, Inspector, I was right. Lois was killed
- 21:32Speaker 4: by mistake. It was intended to be filled.
- 21:34Speaker 7: Well, that's the case, then Carter and Spiegel cancel out.
- 21:36Speaker 4: Correct, Honey, the murderer had planned to kill Phyllis, send
- 21:40Speaker 4: her body in a trunk to my apartment, and lead
- 21:41Speaker 4: me to explain it to the police.
- 21:43Speaker 5: All right, maybe, so say the motive is revenge. You
- 21:46Speaker 5: got one hundred enemies, Mike. One of them poses a
- 21:48Speaker 5: transfer company investigator.
- 21:49Speaker 3: But who is he? He didn't leave a single finger
- 21:52Speaker 3: printing Phil's apartment. Where do we start looking?
- 21:54Speaker 10: Oh?
- 21:54Speaker 4: If I could only remember the guy, I know his voice?
- 21:58Speaker 4: Where have I heard that? When? Did I? I must
- 22:01Speaker 4: know him.
- 22:02Speaker 7: Well, he didn't know me very well, or he'd never
- 22:04Speaker 7: have killed the wrong girl. Lois and I were the
- 22:06Speaker 7: same height, same color of hair, Mike, But that's all.
- 22:11Speaker 4: Maybe maybe he figured you changed a lot of honey.
- 22:13Speaker 4: If if he hadn't seen you in a long time,
- 22:14Speaker 4: if he'd been away, if he'd had been.
- 22:18Speaker 5: Paraday, Yeah, if he'd been away in prisoner kids were
- 22:21Speaker 5: going to make a phone call right now?
- 22:24Speaker 3: Hello, give me Sam Quentin.
- 22:25Speaker 4: Phil fill Honey closed that door to the other room.
- 22:27Speaker 5: I can't do it, Hello, Inspector Friarty San Francisco calling. Yes,
- 22:32Speaker 5: I want to speak to him personally. Might get on
- 22:35Speaker 5: an extension phone. Yeah, okay, plenty, sir. We need a
- 22:41Speaker 5: list of all prisoners you've released from your little sanatorium
- 22:44Speaker 5: in the past two weeks.
- 22:45Speaker 12: Last two weeks.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Yeah, it'll hardly.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Make a list.
- 22:51Speaker 3: What's his name?
- 22:52Speaker 4: Let me see?
- 22:53Speaker 3: It was Harold Ford. That means anything to you, Mike.
- 22:59Speaker 4: Mike, Well, you've got job here. We we figured maybe
- 23:03Speaker 4: you had released a prisoner who had a gudge against me, some.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Old enemy of Mike's who might try his hand at revenge.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Oh, that's the.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Only release we've had lately.
- 23:11Speaker 11: In fact, Mike, you can subtract one anemy from your book.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Died here last week, Al Schmock.
- 23:17Speaker 4: Al, Holy jumpin' now? I remember it's Al Smock's brother,
- 23:22Speaker 4: Jack Smock.
- 23:23Speaker 12: That's right here.
- 23:24Speaker 3: A brother came up here and blamed the body.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Does that mean anything to you?
- 23:27Speaker 3: Ha hah?
- 23:28Speaker 4: Does it set an extra fight in your dining room?
- 23:30Speaker 3: Chief?
- 23:30Speaker 4: We're sending you and you.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Border goodbye, sir, and thanks a million for your help.
- 23:36Speaker 4: Jack Smock, Jack Smock. He must have died his hair
- 23:39Speaker 4: and put on glasses. Phil, Phil, you remember the Casey
- 23:41Speaker 4: the two brothers about four years ago.
- 23:43Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, vaguely it was. It was manslaughter. You helped
- 23:47Speaker 7: send the one called al Smock up for twenty.
- 23:49Speaker 4: Years, right, honey, right. Jack was supposed to be brothers
- 23:51Speaker 4: al Alibi, but our Testimoni tied him up in bow Knox.
- 23:55Speaker 3: So our guide him prison. Now brother Jack is out
- 23:57Speaker 3: for revenge.
- 23:58Speaker 7: Oh fine, but where is brother Jack right now? And
- 24:00Speaker 7: how do we catch him?
- 24:02Speaker 3: Got it?
- 24:02Speaker 4: Honey? Jack claim the body, so he must have buried him.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Now we got to find that body.
- 24:16Speaker 2: We'll return to Mike Shane and his adventures in just
- 24:19Speaker 2: a moment. Due to their position, the front wheel bearings
- 24:27Speaker 2: of your automobile are subject to damage from dirt, water, grit,
- 24:32Speaker 2: and brake dust. Because of their more exposed position, and
- 24:35Speaker 2: because they are so important to safe easy driving, front
- 24:38Speaker 2: wheel bearings need the.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Best possible lubrication.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Failure to keep these bearings well greased can mean wheel shimmy,
- 24:45Speaker 2: hard steering, and weakening of the whole front assembly. For
- 24:49Speaker 2: these reasons, your neighborhood Union oil minuteman uses extra care
- 24:53Speaker 2: when he lubricates your front wheel bearings. First, he washes
- 24:57Speaker 2: out all the old grease and dirt with solvents. Then
- 25:00Speaker 2: the bearings and races are individually cleaned until they are
- 25:03Speaker 2: dry and shiny. Finally, the clean, polished bearings are carefully
- 25:08Speaker 2: assembled in the races and greased with special equipment. With
- 25:12Speaker 2: each bearing snugly sealed in a smooth, sturdy coating of
- 25:15Speaker 2: Union oil ball roll grease. Your front wheels are all
- 25:19Speaker 2: set for months of well lubricated easy rolling. The cost
- 25:23Speaker 2: for the entire service is nominal, So for safer, easier driving,
- 25:27Speaker 2: just stop in wherever you see the sign of the
- 25:29Speaker 2: big orange and blue seventy six and ask for Union
- 25:33Speaker 2: oil front wheel bearing surface.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 25:41Speaker 2: At police headquarters, Mike and Inspector Parody each holds a
- 25:45Speaker 2: telephone in his hands. They have checked every cemetery in
- 25:48Speaker 2: the book.
- 25:49Speaker 7: Well, here's the last one, Shadow Mountain Cemetery.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Yes, sir, here the.
- 25:59Speaker 12: Is Albert Smock entered last Friday. The plat was bought
- 26:05Speaker 12: by a mister Jack Smock.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Swell, swell, what's his address?
- 26:08Speaker 12: Our records show it as one nine six old Waterfront.
- 26:21Speaker 7: This is it, kids, looks like a busted down rooming
- 26:23Speaker 7: house and somebody's head sticking out of every window.
- 26:26Speaker 3: There there's a.
- 26:27Speaker 4: Sergeant at the entrance.
- 26:30Speaker 3: Good work, sergeant. Anybody tried to leave the building and alser.
- 26:33Speaker 3: I got two boys at the back door, two in
- 26:35Speaker 3: the alley, and two by the fire escape. Okay, let's
- 26:37Speaker 3: go in, Mike.
- 26:37Speaker 7: I'm coming to you.
- 26:38Speaker 4: Are not you want to hold in your head.
- 26:41Speaker 7: I might get one just standing here, Smarty Smock may
- 26:44Speaker 7: be in that crowd across the street something.
- 26:46Speaker 3: So that Mic, Sergeant, your job will be to take
- 26:48Speaker 3: care of miss Knight. We're all going in.
- 26:49Speaker 7: Right, come on, Oh sheres it's dark again. Why don't
- 26:56Speaker 7: they light these stairs.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Like any quir he's on this next floor. If he's
- 27:02Speaker 4: in his room, the landlord said, the room three h five. Ah,
- 27:08Speaker 4: let me see that'd be here to the left.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Keep close to the wall.
- 27:16Speaker 7: There it is that there, there's no light shining under it.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Maybe he's playing possole Sergeant, You won't. He'll stay here
- 27:24Speaker 4: lapping out against the wall. Now you ready, already.
- 27:34Speaker 3: He's playing coy Open up, Smock. You're completely surrounded.
- 27:39Speaker 4: Okay, so you won't open up?
- 27:42Speaker 3: Yeah, so that's his answer. Okay, Mike, let's go Wait
- 27:54Speaker 3: a minute.
- 27:55Speaker 8: Not give the light, Mike.
- 28:00Speaker 7: Oh, he's flat on the floor.
- 28:01Speaker 6: Micha, are you all right?
- 28:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess so.
- 28:05Speaker 4: Okay, inspector, Okay, climb off from under that table.
- 28:08Speaker 3: I know somebody got hit, but cool shut the gun
- 28:11Speaker 3: right out of my hand.
- 28:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I know. I didn't know where to aim in
- 28:14Speaker 4: the dark till he fired and I saw his flash.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Thanks to you, Mike, I'm still breathing.
- 28:18Speaker 7: Yeah, this man on the floor won't be unless we
- 28:21Speaker 7: get an ambulance quick.
- 28:23Speaker 3: You found out.
- 28:26Speaker 4: I didn't think you're right, bully, you didn't think period.
- 28:31Speaker 4: But then it doesn't take much in the way of brains,
- 28:34Speaker 4: just an awful lot of lives.
- 28:51Speaker 5: Don't be silly, Phyllis, This is fairy. I'll be glad
- 28:54Speaker 5: to put you out for a couple of nights. Yeah,
- 28:56Speaker 5: break this down.
- 28:56Speaker 4: He's right, honey, stay out of your apartment for a
- 28:59Speaker 4: few days to you sort of forget what's happened.
- 29:02Speaker 3: All right.
- 29:04Speaker 7: I was just thinking, you know, this was a freak case.
- 29:07Speaker 7: Everything stacked up so strongly against Nelson Carter and doctor Spiegel,
- 29:11Speaker 7: and yet at the last minute it turned out to
- 29:12Speaker 7: be almost a complete stranger.
- 29:15Speaker 4: Because we were looking for the wrong motor.
- 29:17Speaker 3: And worried about that guy Spiegel. He looks to me
- 29:20Speaker 3: like a guy.
- 29:20Speaker 7: Who commit plenty of murder and will before he gets
- 29:23Speaker 7: through with his career.
- 29:24Speaker 4: No, you can spike that parody, knock him up for
- 29:26Speaker 4: stealing chemical formulas. That'll keep him quiet.
- 29:29Speaker 5: Not a bad idea, keeping so busy making little ones
- 29:32Speaker 5: out of big ones that he can't make dead ones
- 29:33Speaker 5: out a live one.
- 29:36Speaker 4: Well, I hope I need that this episode won't scare
- 29:38Speaker 4: you out of the detecting business, nearly getting bumped off
- 29:41Speaker 4: by your boss's enemies.
- 29:42Speaker 3: He's got plenty more enemies besides Jack Smark.
- 29:45Speaker 7: Oh, I don't know. I'd stick anyway. My boss forgets
- 29:49Speaker 7: the attractions.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Of the job.
- 29:51Speaker 3: What What Why? Honey?
- 30:16Speaker 2: Tune in again next week at eight thirty for another
- 30:19Speaker 2: adventure with Michael Shane Private Detectives, starring Wally Mayer and
- 30:24Speaker 2: Kathy Lewis and Joe Forte as Inspector Faraday. Goodnight's story
- 30:29Speaker 2: was written by Richard de Graff and based on the
- 30:32Speaker 2: character created by Brett Holliday. Music was composed and directed
- 30:36Speaker 2: by Bernard Katz. This is John Lang saying good night
- 30:40Speaker 2: for the people who make seventy six Gasoline and Triton
- 30:44Speaker 2: Motor Oil. Junion Oil Company. This is the Mutual Donaly
- 31:03Speaker 2: Broadcasting System.
- 31:20Speaker 11: This is Andrew J. Graham, author of the web surface
- 31:23Speaker 11: series Oh and a Man.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Of His Wife.
- 31:25Speaker 11: You're listening to the great detectives of Old time radio.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Welcome back.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Well.
- 31:37Speaker 1: I like this episode and it was very well written, uh,
- 31:41Speaker 1: with some good twist in the mystery though that investigator
- 31:46Speaker 1: I think I had a sense even the first time
- 31:49Speaker 1: listening to it this was somebody who was a bit suspicious.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Wally Mayor brought a lot of warmth and understanding the
- 31:57Speaker 1: way that his portrayal works here, which is different from
- 32:01Speaker 1: a lot of other detectives. Of course, I'm thinking in
- 32:04Speaker 1: particular here of Nick Carter, who would just be focused
- 32:09Speaker 1: on solving the case, and that does give the characters
- 32:12Speaker 1: a little bit more depth. Though we may struggle a
- 32:16Speaker 1: bit to relate with how fast she's expected to get
- 32:20Speaker 1: over it, but there's at least some acknowledgment that she
- 32:24Speaker 1: needs some time. So again, a very well crafted episode.
- 32:28Speaker 1: And interesting thing about this particular episode is it's unlike
- 32:33Speaker 1: any episode we've played so far of Michael Shane in
- 32:36Speaker 1: that it's been in circulation a very long time. Actually,
- 32:41Speaker 1: I originally intended to do Michael Shane before I did
- 32:46Speaker 1: The Saint. However, I was very focused on that idea
- 32:50Speaker 1: that we would do the Price of Fame matter while
- 32:53Speaker 1: we were on Johnny Daller, while we were playing Vins
- 32:57Speaker 1: The Saint with Vincent Price. And that became a problem
- 33:02Speaker 1: because in short order we went from a total of
- 33:07Speaker 1: five episodes of Michael Shane Private Detective with Wally Meyer
- 33:11Speaker 1: in circulation to twenty eight episodes, which is great listening,
- 33:18Speaker 1: but literally I think it was a week or two
- 33:22Speaker 1: before we were scheduled to announce the series that we
- 33:25Speaker 1: would be running for that season, I had to change
- 33:29Speaker 1: from doing The Saint to doing Michael Shane. But this
- 33:32Speaker 1: one has been in circulation a long time and I
- 33:35Speaker 1: enjoyed it the first time I heard it, and I
- 33:37Speaker 1: was glad to hear it again. But at any rate,
- 33:40Speaker 1: we do turn to listener comments and feedback. I received
- 33:44Speaker 1: a tweet from Levi, who writes in Kathy Lewis does
- 33:50Speaker 1: has such an amazing voice, I can't get enough of it. Well,
- 33:53Speaker 1: thanks so much, Levi, and she's definitely got a very
- 33:56Speaker 1: strong voice, and I will think about doing a Kathy
- 34:00Speaker 1: Lewis app extra for those of you with the app
- 34:03Speaker 1: or the premium site. Usually I do app extras with
- 34:07Speaker 1: just the stars of the given series, but Kathy Lewis
- 34:12Speaker 1: was one of the great. She ranked number sixty four
- 34:16Speaker 1: on my list of Radio's most Essential people, and I
- 34:20Speaker 1: may have even underrated her at that. So we'll see
- 34:23Speaker 1: what we can do about that. But that we'll do
- 34:25Speaker 1: it for today. Join us tomorrow as we premiere The
- 34:30Speaker 1: Crime Files of Flemon. In the meantime, if you do
- 34:34Speaker 1: have a comment, send it to me Box thirteen at
