Speaker 1: What's up everyone and welcome to another episode of the
• 0:03
Speaker 1: Epstein Chronicles. There are certain people who seem to believe
• 0:08
Speaker 1: that if they put on an expensive suit, lower their voice,
• 0:11
Speaker 1: and answer questions slowly enough, the rest of us are
• 0:13
Speaker 1: supposed to forget how obvious the bullshit is. And yo,
• 0:17
Speaker 1: I'm tired of it. I'm tired of watching powerful men
• 0:20
Speaker 1: sit in front of cameras and committees and act like
• 0:23
Speaker 1: the whole world is too stupid to connect two dots
• 0:26
Speaker 1: sitting three inches apart. I'm tired of hearing about what
• 0:29
Speaker 1: somebody supposedly did not know while staring at years of
• 0:32
Speaker 1: evidence showing just how close they were to Jeffrey Epstein.
• 0:36
Speaker 1: And more than anything, I'm tired of the idea that
• 0:38
Speaker 1: we're all supposed to be polite about it. No. Look,
• 0:42
Speaker 1: there comes a point where politeness starts looking a whole
• 0:44
Speaker 1: lot like complicity. For years, the Epstein story has been
• 0:48
Speaker 1: buried under the same ass mountain of excuses. Nobody saw anything,
• 0:52
Speaker 1: knew anything, remembers anything. Everybody was around them, but somehow, nobody...
• 0:57
Speaker 1: was really with him. Everybody had a relationship with him,
• 1:00
Speaker 1: but somehow every relationship was misunderstood. Everybody benefited being in
• 1:06
Speaker 1: his orbit, but somehow nobody wants to explain what that
• 1:09
Speaker 1: orbit actually looked like once the doors closed. It's insulting.
• 1:13
Speaker 1: It's insulting to the survivors, the public, and frankly, it's
• 1:17
Speaker 1: insulting to anyone with enough common sense to know when
• 1:20
Speaker 1: they're being sold a load of shit. Because ordinary folk,
• 1:24
Speaker 1: me and you, don't get to testify like this We
• 1:28
Speaker 1: don't get to forget every inconvenient detail and expect everyone
• 1:31
Speaker 1: to shrug. We don't get endless second chances to reshape
• 1:34
Speaker 1: our story. We don't get to hide behind our status, money, lawyers, titles,
• 1:39
Speaker 1: or institutions while everybody else is told to sit down
• 1:42
Speaker 1: and trust the process. Because as far as I'm concerned,
• 1:45
Speaker 1: there's a point where the excuses stop sounding complicated and
• 1:49
Speaker 1: they just sound dishonest. The same people who were smart
• 1:52
Speaker 1: enough to run banks, companies, governments, foundations, and billion-dollar empires...
• 1:57
Speaker 1: somehow become unbelievably stupid the second you ask them what
• 2:01
Speaker 1: was happening around Epstein. And that is one hell of
• 2:04
Speaker 1: a coincidence. And I'm fresh out of patience for coincidences.
• 2:10
Speaker 1: Jeff Staley sat in front of Congress and gave the
• 2:13
Speaker 1: kind of testimony we've heard over and over again in
• 2:16
Speaker 1: the Epstein mess. He knew Epstein, but apparently not that well.
• 2:20
Speaker 1: He visited his homes, but somehow never saw anything. He
• 2:24
Speaker 1: exchanged hundreds and hundreds of messages with the guy, But
• 2:27
Speaker 1: when the ugly ones come up, his memory suddenly starts
• 2:30
Speaker 1: coughing and sputtering. Well, he was close enough to Epstein
• 2:32
Speaker 1: to call their friendship profound, but not close enough to
• 2:35
Speaker 1: know what everybody else now knows Epstein was doing. Well,
• 2:39
Speaker 1: he was close enough to meet one of Epstein's assistants
• 2:42
Speaker 1: and eventually have sex with her. But we're supposed to
• 2:44
Speaker 1: believe that had nothing whatsoever to do with the world
• 2:47
Speaker 1: Epstein had built around himself. Come on, man. At some point,
• 2:51
Speaker 1: you have to stop pretending that these explanations are reasonable.
• 2:54
Speaker 1: Just because a rich guy in a suit delivers them calmly.
• 2:58
Speaker 1: The rest of us would never get that kind of
• 2:59
Speaker 1: benefit of the doubt. We'd be called liars before we
• 3:02
Speaker 1: even finished the sentence. Look, Staley wasn't some random schmuck
• 3:07
Speaker 1: who Epstein met twice at some fundraiser. He was a
• 3:10
Speaker 1: top JP Morgan executive and eventually ran the bank's private
• 3:13
Speaker 1: banking operation. Epstein was a valuable client of the bank
• 3:17
Speaker 1: and Staley was deeply involved in that relationship. Epstein was
• 3:21
Speaker 1: the kind of client banks love until the heat gets
• 3:24
Speaker 1: too hot. He had money, connections, access, and a black
• 3:27
Speaker 1: book full of people most normal people would never get
• 3:31
Speaker 1: in the same room with. And that made him useful.
• 3:34
Speaker 1: Staley wasn't standing outside that world looking in. He was
• 3:37
Speaker 1: right there in it. He visited Epstein's Manhattan townhouse repeatedly,
• 3:41
Speaker 1: traveled to Epstein's private island, communicated with him for years,
• 3:45
Speaker 1: and continued the relationship after Epstein had already been convicted
• 3:49
Speaker 1: in Florida. Nobody needs a PhD to understand why that
• 3:53
Speaker 1: looks awful. Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 and became a
• 3:57
Speaker 1: registered sex offender. That should have been the point where
• 4:00
Speaker 1: anyone with a functioning moral compass and half a brain said, yo,
• 4:04
Speaker 1: I'm done with this dude. Staley didn't do that. He
• 4:07
Speaker 1: kept talking to him. He kept visiting him. He kept
• 4:09
Speaker 1: treating him like somebody worth having in his life. He
• 4:13
Speaker 1: even stayed in touch while Epstein was serving his joke
• 4:15
Speaker 1: of a sentence in Florida. And that alone should tell
• 4:18
Speaker 1: you how little the conviction seemed to matter inside Epstein's
• 4:21
Speaker 1: elite social circle. For normal people, a sex offense involving
• 4:25
Speaker 1: a minor destroys your reputation and everybody runs for the hills.
• 4:31
Speaker 1: For Jeffrey Epstein, it apparently meant some of his powerful
• 4:34
Speaker 1: friends just kept showing up. Listen, we're not talking about
• 4:38
Speaker 1: a guy who disappeared after 2008 and then popped back
• 4:41
Speaker 1: up years later claiming he had no idea what happened.
• 4:44
Speaker 1: Staley stayed connected to Epstein during the exact period when
• 4:48
Speaker 1: there was already a giant flashing warning sign over this
• 4:51
Speaker 1: man's head. Epstein wasn't hiding the fact that he'd been convicted.
• 4:55
Speaker 1: It was public. It was known. There had already been
• 4:58
Speaker 1: allegations involving underage girls, yet somehow the friendship continued. Then,
• 5:02
Speaker 1: years later, when people start asking questions, everybody suddenly wants
• 5:07
Speaker 1: to act like Epstein was just some weird financier that
• 5:10
Speaker 1: they barely knew. Yo, that dog does not hunt. You
• 5:13
Speaker 1: cannot have that relationship both ways. And the emails make
• 5:16
Speaker 1: the whole thing worse. There were roughly 1,200 messages exchanged
• 5:20
Speaker 1: between Staley and Epstein over a period of years. We're
• 5:24
Speaker 1: not talking about casual contact. We're not talking about once
• 5:27
Speaker 1: in a while checking in. That's a relationship. Some of
• 5:31
Speaker 1: those messages were personal, strange, and in some cases, downright embarrassing.
• 5:36
Speaker 1: When they were eventually dragged into the light, Staley often
• 5:39
Speaker 1: fell back on the same old line we hear from
• 5:41
Speaker 1: powerful people under pressure. He didn't remember. Funny how memory
• 5:46
Speaker 1: works when the emails are friendlier. and harmless. It gets
• 5:50
Speaker 1: a whole lot fuzzier when the messages become difficult to explain.
• 5:55
Speaker 1: One exchange involving Snow White and other fairytale language has
• 5:59
Speaker 1: been picked apart for years because nobody outside that relationship
• 6:02
Speaker 1: can say with certainty what the hell they were talking about. Now,
• 6:06
Speaker 1: Staley has denied that it has the sinister meaning that
• 6:10
Speaker 1: other people have suggested. Well, fair enough. But when you're
• 6:13
Speaker 1: communicating in cryptic language with Jeffrey Epstein, people are going
• 6:17
Speaker 1: to ask some questions It's not persecution, my friend. It's
• 6:20
Speaker 1: common sense. Epstein wasn't a dentist sending appointment reminders. He
• 6:25
Speaker 1: was a convicted sex offender surrounded by young women and girls.
• 6:29
Speaker 1: If you decide to exchange cute little coded sounding messages
• 6:33
Speaker 1: with that dude, you don't get to act offended when
• 6:35
Speaker 1: the rest of us want to know what they meant.
• 6:38
Speaker 1: Then we get to the part of Staley's testimony that's
• 6:41
Speaker 1: made a lot of people stop dead in their tracks.
• 6:44
Speaker 1: Staley acknowledged having sex with one of Epstein's assistants. He
• 6:47
Speaker 1: described it as consensual. He said Epstein did not arrange it.
• 6:52
Speaker 1: He said it developed separately. He said essentially, two adults met, flirted,
• 6:57
Speaker 1: and eventually slept together. That's a nice clean story. A
• 7:00
Speaker 1: nice tidy explanation. The problem is that nothing about Jeffrey
• 7:04
Speaker 1: Epstein's world was clean or tidy. Epstein's so-called assistants were
• 7:09
Speaker 1: not working at a normal office where everybody punched a
• 7:12
Speaker 1: time clock and went home at five. Women around Epstein
• 7:16
Speaker 1: have been described for years as as occupying overlapping roles.
• 7:20
Speaker 1: Some were employees. Some were recruiters. Some were victims. Some
• 7:24
Speaker 1: were abused and then used to bring other girls into
• 7:27
Speaker 1: Epstein's orbit. Some were accused of helping Epstein while also
• 7:30
Speaker 1: existing under his control themselves. That's what people keep missing
• 7:35
Speaker 1: when they slap a label like assistant on somebody and
• 7:38
Speaker 1: think the conversation's over. In Epstein's world, the job title
• 7:42
Speaker 1: did not tell the full story. The woman Staley described
• 7:45
Speaker 1: was reportedly somebody who later accused Epstein of abuse and
• 7:49
Speaker 1: received a settlement. That matters. Now, it doesn't automatically prove
• 7:53
Speaker 1: that Epstein trafficked her to Staley, and nobody needs to
• 7:55
Speaker 1: invent that claim. The facts are bad enough without making
• 7:59
Speaker 1: anything up, but it sure as hell raises questions about
• 8:03
Speaker 1: what her life was like inside Epstein's operation and how
• 8:06
Speaker 1: free she was to really make choices. Staley calling the
• 8:10
Speaker 1: encounter consensual tells us how Staley viewed it That's one
• 8:13
Speaker 1: side of the story. Where's hers? And that's the question
• 8:17
Speaker 1: I keep coming back to. What did she say happened?
• 8:19
Speaker 1: What did she think about the encounter? Did she consider
• 8:22
Speaker 1: herself free and independent at the time? Did she feel
• 8:25
Speaker 1: pressure from Epstein or anyone else around him? Did she
• 8:29
Speaker 1: believe powerful men in Epstein's circle had access to women
• 8:32
Speaker 1: working for him? Did she ever discuss Staley with Epstein?
• 8:36
Speaker 1: Those aren't crazy questions. Those are the first questions any
• 8:39
Speaker 1: serious investigator should be asking. Instead, we keep getting these
• 8:44
Speaker 1: carefully cut little pieces of testimony designed to answer exactly
• 8:48
Speaker 1: what was asked and not one inch more. Did Epstein
• 8:50
Speaker 1: arrange it? No. Did you see young girls? No. Did
• 8:54
Speaker 1: you witness abuse? No. Did you know what was happening? No.
• 8:58
Speaker 1: Do you remember this email? Not really. Do you remember
• 9:00
Speaker 1: that conversation? Not clearly. Somehow, the most connected people in
• 9:04
Speaker 1: Epstein's life were also the least observant human beings on
• 9:07
Speaker 1: the whole ass planet. These guys apparently walked through Epstein's
• 9:10
Speaker 1: homes with blindfolds on. They never saw anything. They never
• 9:14
Speaker 1: heard anything. Nobody ever said anything strange. Nobody ever seemed
• 9:18
Speaker 1: too young. Nobody ever looked uncomfortable. Nobody ever made them suspicious. Look,
• 9:24
Speaker 1: we were just all there for dinner, business, conversation, or
• 9:27
Speaker 1: whatever innocent explanation happened to fit the moment. Epstein must
• 9:31
Speaker 1: have had the greatest ability in human history to hide
• 9:33
Speaker 1: his behavior from the exact people spending time inside his houses.
• 9:38
Speaker 1: Either that, or a lot of people decided it was
• 9:41
Speaker 1: easier Now, Staley's problems with credibility didn't start with Congress either.
• 9:49
Speaker 1: British regulators already went after him over the way his
• 9:52
Speaker 1: Epstein relationship was described. Barclays has represented the relationship as
• 9:57
Speaker 1: less close than the documentary record eventually showed. Regulators did
• 10:01
Speaker 1: not buy it. The Financial Conduct Authority found that Staley
• 10:05
Speaker 1: had misled them about the nature of that relationship. He
• 10:08
Speaker 1: fought that finding and he lost. So, when people now
• 10:13
Speaker 1: listen to him describe Epstein in carefully measured terms, they're
• 10:16
Speaker 1: not starting from a blank sheet of paper. And I
• 10:19
Speaker 1: think that matters because Staley has already been caught minimizing
• 10:23
Speaker 1: the relationship. He can complain about the wording or the
• 10:26
Speaker 1: interpretation all he wants. The fact remains that regulators looked
• 10:31
Speaker 1: at what was said about Epstein, looked at the emails,
• 10:34
Speaker 1: looked at the history, and decided the description did not
• 10:37
Speaker 1: match reality. So why in the hell should Congress treat
• 10:41
Speaker 1: every new Staley answer like it came down from Mount Sinai?
• 10:44
Speaker 1: Why would anybody? This is a man whose relationship with
• 10:48
Speaker 1: Epstein is has already been the subject of a major
• 10:51
Speaker 1: credibility fight. That doesn't make every sentence out of his
• 10:54
Speaker 1: mouth false. It does mean nobody should be handing him
• 10:58
Speaker 1: automatic trust. The bank itself has plenty to answer for too.
• 11:03
Speaker 1: JP Morgan kept Epstein as a client for years. Internal
• 11:06
Speaker 1: people raised concerns. There were questions about his cash withdrawals.
• 11:10
Speaker 1: There were questions about suspicious activity. There were questions about
• 11:14
Speaker 1: exactly what kind of risk the guy represented. Epstein still
• 11:17
Speaker 1: remained there. At one point, the bank eventually knew enough
• 11:20
Speaker 1: to suspect human trafficking concerns according to testimony and litigation records.
• 11:25
Speaker 1: Yet somehow this relationship dragged on until 2013. Now, tell
• 11:30
Speaker 1: me what happens if you or I walk into a
• 11:32
Speaker 1: bank and start moving money around in ways that set
• 11:35
Speaker 1: off alarms. Our account gets frozen. We get questions. We
• 11:39
Speaker 1: get paperwork. We get treated like potential criminals before lunch.
• 11:43
Speaker 1: Jeffrey Epstein gets years of banking services while employees are
• 11:47
Speaker 1: raising red flags. Why? Well, because he was rich. Because
• 11:51
Speaker 1: he was connected. Because he was useful. And that's the
• 11:54
Speaker 1: part nobody in corporate America likes saying out loud. And then,
• 11:58
Speaker 1: once the lawsuits started flying, JP Morgan and Staley started
• 12:01
Speaker 1: pointing fingers at each other. The bank tried to shift
• 12:04
Speaker 1: responsibility towards Staley. Staley pushed back. Everybody suddenly became interested
• 12:09
Speaker 1: in drawing a line around their personal share of the disaster.
• 12:13
Speaker 1: That's how it always works. When the money is flowing,
• 12:16
Speaker 1: everybody's on the team. When the subpoenas arrive, nobody knows anybody.
• 12:21
Speaker 1: Epstein was valuable until being associated with him became more
• 12:25
Speaker 1: expensive than having him around. All right, folks, we're going
• 12:28
Speaker 1: to wrap up episode one right here. And in the
• 12:30
Speaker 1: next episode, we're going to pick up with episode two.
• 12:33
Speaker 1: All the information that goes with this episode can be
• 12:36
