Transcript
- 0:00Hello there this is Obi Wan the right Obi Wan, the dog Obi Wan
- 0:07and this is most things Kenobi. I have a bad feeling about this.
- 0:28Hi everyone, welcome to another episode of Most Things Kenobi, a
- 0:31podcast about Obi Wan Kenobi and all things Star Wars.
- 0:35I'm your host, Lauren. And I'm your host, Leanne.
- 0:38Hello there and I'm Obi Wan Kenobi or James Arnold Taylor,
- 0:43the 3rd and 4th hosts. You've got James.
- 0:48And you've got Obi Wan. Obi Wan should be third though.
- 0:51He shouldn't be fourth. He shouldn't go after James.
- 0:54No, I agree. Obi Wan.
- 0:55You're right. You should get.
- 0:57Thank you very much, James. That's very kind.
- 0:59We'll just step aside You 2 just take.
- 1:01Yeah, you 2 take as much time as you need.
- 1:05Welcome back. It's great to be back.
- 1:08It's been far too long. I think it's been quite a quite
- 1:12a while now. The last time though, I think I
- 1:14was more so on we. We did a chat with all of your
- 1:18patrons and I came on that that was probably the last time we
- 1:21were all together together but long we've seen each other at
- 1:25cons, right? A con.
- 1:27No, I was trying to like see if you'd be anywhere in my
- 1:30peripheral area. And there there wasn't really up
- 1:34here in the chilly northern states, up in the Midwest.
- 1:39Well. I'll be in.
- 1:41I'll be in Columbus, OH in a week.
- 1:44Really. But I'll be in San Francisco in
- 1:47a couple days. Yeah.
- 1:48Oh. Nice.
- 1:50I love San Francisco. Very nice.
- 1:52I've not been in a very long time now.
- 1:54I used to live up in that area when I was a kid, but I've not
- 1:57been. And it's a fan Expo.
- 1:59It's a big show. And Matt, the chosen one will be
- 2:02there. Ashley Padme, Kat Tabor will be
- 2:06there. Have you had Catherine Taber on
- 2:09your show? No, no, you're the only one
- 2:12we've had. And we had Beth Revis, who is a
- 2:14writer. But yeah.
- 2:15Yeah OK, well I'm gonna see cause cat would be great.
- 2:18Yeah, we would love. Vouch for us please.
- 2:22I mean, I will put in a few good words.
- 2:25I will. Done, done and done.
- 2:28So yeah. So we will all be together and
- 2:30then Nika Ventris will be. There oh.
- 2:32Fantastic. Oh my gosh.
- 2:34I love her, she's so talented, Oh my God.
- 2:36A great lineup. I gotta get to one of these
- 2:38soon. Have you ever been to 1?
- 2:41I, I've been to to celebration and that's when I was scheduled
- 2:46to meet all of you guys with Lauren.
- 2:48And then it was the weird double booking.
- 2:50You live too far away, Leanne. You're out and.
- 2:53It's just me and nature up here in the mountains.
- 2:57So we did and I know we're just like jumping in.
- 3:00I hope that's OK. But so we did 20 cons this year.
- 3:04This will be the 20. Last year will be, I think, 20.
- 3:07And yeah, so there's a lot I don't know.
- 3:09I don't think I'm going to be doing as many next year.
- 3:11There are few already in the books and we'll announce them,
- 3:13but I can't say anything yet. Yeah, Yeah, it must be honestly,
- 3:18it must be so exhausting to because it's not just the
- 3:21meeting people and answering the same question 6,000,000 times,
- 3:24but you're traveling and that's very exhausting on the body to
- 3:27travel and. It is, yeah.
- 3:30It's a lot. I've always been curious about
- 3:32that. How do you keep your energy up?
- 3:35I, you know, and I don't drink coffee.
- 3:36I'm not a caffeine person, so I. Even more, I need to know your
- 3:41secrets. No, I have.
- 3:42So here's the whole thing. So we leave on Thanksgiving.
- 3:46So I don't know if that gives away too much information for
- 3:48everybody else to when you guys are recording and such, but
- 3:50we're a few days away from Thanksgiving right now and we
- 3:53will be flying out on Thanksgiving, my wife and I.
- 3:56And it's because it's the least crowded day actually, too.
- 4:00And my daughter is now, you know, a big shot, lives on her
- 4:02own, has her own place and has a job full time.
- 4:06So she's working on the holiday. So she's like, well, I won't be
- 4:09able to come over anyways. And so we said, well, then we're
- 4:11going to go to a Comic Con and no.
- 4:15And so, so we're going to fly out.
- 4:17And then the show starts on Friday and then Friday,
- 4:19Saturday, Sunday, and then we fly home Monday.
- 4:21And then we stay home. Well, we get home Monday, and
- 4:24then we're home Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
- 4:26And then Friday we fly to Columbus and we do Friday,
- 4:29Saturday, Sunday, fly home Sunday for that one.
- 4:32So amazing. So do you just not speak out
- 4:34loud for a couple days after? I had sometimes, yeah.
- 4:39And if there's a job in between where I have to have a certain
- 4:42voice or whatever, it's, it's tricky.
- 4:45Like sometimes I do Justin Timberlake's doubling for things
- 4:48for like trolls for Branch. Oh cool.
- 4:50Did you know that? Yeah.
- 4:52I think I yeah, I knew that. Way more up on stuff than I am,
- 4:56but that's really cool, I didn't know that.
- 4:58So Justin Timberlake, everybody's voice is just much
- 5:00cooler than mine, but it's right about there.
- 5:02It's pretty similar. And one time after a big thing
- 5:05of shows, it seemed like every time after I did the show, I had
- 5:09to do his voice. And I was like, this is really
- 5:11hard because then you end up sounding like this after a show.
- 5:16Is there any downtime? Do do you really have to kind of
- 5:20rest the voice? Yeah, I do.
- 5:23And my wife and I both know a little bit of sign language and
- 5:26we've forgive me if I'm repeating myself on this, but so
- 5:29when I rest my voice, we can communicate at least with sign
- 5:32language. Very nice.
- 5:33Kind of amazing, actually. Brilliant.
- 5:37It's fun, it's a great language, It's actually a beautiful
- 5:39language. And we had, years ago, we had
- 5:41two neighbors that were deaf. And so we learned as much as we
- 5:45could so we could all communicate.
- 5:47That's amazing, yeah. But it the whole thing.
- 5:51So what I do is OK, so today is Monday, I leave Thursday.
- 5:55So Wednesday is to answer your question, I'll go in, I'll go to
- 5:58my doctor's office and they give me an IV drip of vitamins and
- 6:04glutathione and you know, all the good stuff there.
- 6:08And I do that for like, you know, 1/2 hour it takes.
- 6:12And they they say I have very good veins.
- 6:14Oh, that's good. That's actually a good thing.
- 6:18Normally takes people like 45 minutes, takes me 1/2 an hour
- 6:20so. Oh well.
- 6:22Yeah, just remember that now and and then.
- 6:25So I'll do that and then I will go to the physical therapist.
- 6:30I go tomorrow and they will do what they call dry needling.
- 6:33Have you ever heard of dry needling?
- 6:34Oh yeah, absolutely. I have had it.
- 6:37Have you had it? I had it last year.
- 6:39Oh. Boy, it's a special experience.
- 6:43Yeah, I have it done in my neck and in my up near my ears.
- 6:47Oh wow. When I fly, I have bad ears and
- 6:52so when I fly they just what I have is I have very thin
- 6:55eardrums. I was told this as a kid.
- 6:58So sometimes they won't pop when I'm flying.
- 7:01You know when you go to kind of make them pop, they won't.
- 7:04So if I do the dry needling it helps.
- 7:06Amazing. Wow, how interesting.
- 7:08See, these are the behind the scenes things you don't get.
- 7:11It, I mean, it's, yeah, it's fascinating though.
- 7:13It. Is because we don't get a look
- 7:15into this. Right.
- 7:17It just seems like instead I show up and I'm like, hello,
- 7:19that's it, you know? But no, there's all this.
- 7:22There's a lot of needles involved, I guess, you know?
- 7:24So when Reiko Hardeen happened, how many needles were needed to
- 7:28go completely bald and hairless? That no, that was the best ever.
- 7:33That was a that's a total. That's a different dry needle
- 7:35they. Haven't done a action figure of
- 7:38him though, have they? If they haven't, they should,
- 7:41because they. Should have right?
- 7:43I would like a pop. I mean I remember burning the
- 7:46hair off of my barbies as a child.
- 7:48Does that count as removing the? Hair, yeah.
- 7:51We would do so back in my day when I was a kid, GI Joe were
- 7:54actually like the size Barbie and they had this Peach fuzz
- 7:58hair and we would shave it off of them, too.
- 8:00It's just like, yeah. It never grows back.
- 8:05That it doesn't. But I had I had a toy called the
- 8:08Fuzzy Pumper Barbershop, and it was a play DoH thing.
- 8:12And you filled the little people with play DoH and you sat them
- 8:15on the little Barber chair, and then you cranked the thing, and
- 8:17then hair grew out and it was cool.
- 8:20So this is the fuzzy say that again.
- 8:23Fuzzy Pumper barbershop. This is my new username the.
- 8:29Fuzzy pumper barbershop. I had that and I had the Snoopy
- 8:31snow cone machine and that was the greatest thing ever.
- 8:34I love snow cones. You put ice in it.
- 8:37It looked like Snoopy's doghouse.
- 8:39Yeah. And there was a little center
- 8:40where the where the entry was. There was actually instead this
- 8:43little thing where you put ice cubes in the top and you push
- 8:45down and then you crank. Both of them were crank.
- 8:47I liked a lot of cranking toys. The cranking toy.
- 8:50Yeah, and. Then you made a snow cone and
- 8:52then you set the cup there and you cut all the ice.
- 8:55And then you you put in the, you know, the flavors and.
- 8:57Everything. What was your favorite flavor?
- 8:59Cherry Cherry can't go over on red's not my color.
- 9:03No, they didn't. Back then they didn't have a
- 9:05blue. Disagree.
- 9:07Disagree. OK, hard disagree.
- 9:09Yes, because that's why that's what started this.
- 9:12That's why I'm here. I think I know where you're
- 9:13going. I know what started all this.
- 9:17We're so predictable. We are very partial to the non
- 9:22traditional Obi Wan outfits. Well, he had the Hawaiian print
- 9:26shirt for vacation. That was, yeah, that was great.
- 9:30One of our the artists who does all of our artwork, she actually
- 9:34did a version of that art and it's fantastic.
- 9:38And we've all talked about getting those Hawaiian shirts
- 9:41made so that we can wear them at like celebration or.
- 9:44To celebration together, yeah. That's great.
- 9:48OK. You won't be able to miss us.
- 9:50If you do though, I got to get one too, and then we'll all be
- 9:54together. That would.
- 9:55Be fun from most things. Can I?
- 9:58In size small. Very good.
- 10:01People always so everybody sends me T-shirts and stuff and they
- 10:04always give me medium and I think they're trying to be
- 10:06polite and I'm like, no, I'm tiny.
- 10:10Like I'm like Seth Green and I we see eye to eye, you know,
- 10:14it's like, and so people always go, I got you a medium.
- 10:19I'm like, well, that's just going to look like.
- 10:20A giant potato sack. Flag.
- 10:23Yeah, it's like a safe bet, run-of-the-mill right down the
- 10:27middle. But you know, it's just hard to
- 10:29know other people's sizes. Unless you go to the boys
- 10:33department at like Macy's or something, then you can get me a
- 10:35large and then I feel pretty good about myself.
- 10:40Just like RIP right through. It I'm secretly over here just
- 10:43keeping keeping all these notes so that when we when you do get
- 10:46the Hawaiian shirt and it's no joke, it's it's the correct
- 10:48size. But so so dark Obi Wan is where
- 10:54I thought we were going though too with the.
- 10:56Red. Yeah, that's where we're going.
- 10:57So we got to know. You finally voice.
- 11:00Finally did it. And you know what, I can finally
- 11:02talk about it. That was the other thing is, is,
- 11:04you know, So what happens with all of these any, any Star Wars
- 11:07stuff, generally, you know, it's way in advance that especially
- 11:10the animated stuff we record and then it takes at least six
- 11:14months. But it was always well over a
- 11:16year that I think I had first recorded.
- 11:19And then they had me back in and I did a couple more things
- 11:24little, you know, you know, for fights or what have you.
- 11:28I think. And I think they changed one of
- 11:31the lines or two. There was a couple lines that
- 11:33changed and so now, but the scene is like, I mean, it's it's
- 11:37you blink and it's that's. What we said, yeah, that's what
- 11:39we said. We were bummed out.
- 11:41Someone sent us the whole, well, we thought it was just a teaser
- 11:45and it turned out to be the entire sequence.
- 11:47And I was like, wait, I thought, he comes back.
- 11:50More honestly, that scene ended and I said OK, we'll we'll get
- 11:54it back because I honestly thought that mall, like Happy
- 11:59Mall and Evil Obi Wan would meet and it would be like a clash of
- 12:04the opposite world meets. And that didn't happen.
- 12:06And that was where I was very disappointed because I think
- 12:09Dark Obi Wan and Happy Mall is something we'll never see again.
- 12:15I mean, they've got to see, well, I will make sure that they
- 12:18listen to this then, right? Because they got to hear that
- 12:21it's so true. Because I was assuming when I
- 12:24read it that I was going to come back later.
- 12:26I thought, oh, this is just one scene.
- 12:28Sometimes they'll do that. They'll go, we're just going to
- 12:29have you do 1 scene for now and we haven't finished writing.
- 12:32And I'm like, OK, well he's got to come back because this is
- 12:34amazing. And then he didn't.
- 12:35And then when I had the second session with them, it was just
- 12:38finessing some of the lines. I'm like, but where isn't there
- 12:41more? So I was very sad.
- 12:44Or was I? It's.
- 12:46Hard to. It was so good though and I just
- 12:51wanted more and we always want more.
- 12:52That's our complaint, yeah. The perfect sass, yes.
- 12:57Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:59It's our one little opportunity because of course we agree with
- 13:02you that there's really no reasonable way that everyone
- 13:05would ever really turn to the dark side.
- 13:07So it would have to be some sort of what if for a like a Lego
- 13:12movie and. Some safe ground.
- 13:14You know, Matt Lanter and I have been trying to get them to do a
- 13:17what if for a long time because we always get asked this
- 13:19question when we go to the cons and we do our panels and
- 13:21everybody says what would you guys like?
- 13:22And we say a what if. And, you know, Matt usually is
- 13:26like, you know, what if Padme and Anakin got married and was
- 13:29like, like happily married and and stayed and all of that.
- 13:33And Obi Wan was, you know, like the annoying neighbor, you know,
- 13:36on the other side of the fence and.
- 13:39But but but. But then also like the real way
- 13:42of doing it too. Would be fascinating too, to
- 13:44dive deep into the actual stuff of what if he could have saved
- 13:48him, you know? What if when the high ground
- 13:50came, he didn't try it? You know, what if all those
- 13:52different things, but Matt always likes to say that he
- 13:55goes, oh, but what if? What if the high ground didn't
- 13:58work? That's the one I go.
- 13:59Have you guys ever answered that question?
- 14:02You know, The thing is, is Matt, I think I've, I know I've told
- 14:04you this before, he lives down the street from me, but he lives
- 14:07up on a hill and he has the high ground.
- 14:09So that's always his answer. He's always like, I do have the
- 14:12high ground and I'm like, no, Obi Wan is not happening.
- 14:19But in Canon, Obi Wan did beat Darth Vader a couple of times
- 14:25every time. Many times at this point.
- 14:28So how was that for all of you then watching Kenobi?
- 14:32I know you're you're watching through it.
- 14:34I don't. Know we've all seen it, yeah.
- 14:36OK. So it's no big deal that for me,
- 14:40when I first saw that, though, I thought that I was a little
- 14:44worried that that's going to take away from, you know, A New
- 14:48Hope and that meeting. And, you know, it's, it's, it's
- 14:53tricky because it's the fight you want to see, but at the same
- 14:56time it's it's weird. Then, you know, when they say we
- 15:00meet again and you know, all that.
- 15:01So it's tying all those pieces together.
- 15:04How do you all fare with that? Do you enjoy it?
- 15:07Do you like it? Do you think it's great?
- 15:08You know, what happened again, if they do, I'm guessing they're
- 15:11going to do another season. Did they already say they're
- 15:12doing? They keep denying it so far.
- 15:16I know nothing. I mean, I, you know.
- 15:19I know, put it on the books. He knows nothing.
- 15:25I feel like with we kind of talked about this recently when
- 15:27we were discussing the Ben Solo movie that got kind of squashed,
- 15:32that Star Wars recontextualizes itself every time they release
- 15:37something new. And I just kind of take
- 15:41everything. It's compartmentalized now.
- 15:44So yeah, it recontextualizes A New Hope so much that I kind of
- 15:49have to just put a wall up there and then take A New Hope as its
- 15:53own thing. Same thing with like Andorra and
- 15:54Rogue One. It's just totally changed a lot
- 15:57of how I saw that movie. And it's not necessarily always
- 16:03a bad thing, but it's getting hard to keep track of it and.
- 16:08Yeah. And I can't remember if I shared
- 16:10with you all before when I, you know, because I did voices in
- 16:13the in those in Rogue. One.
- 16:15Yeah, you did. When?
- 16:17We did that and when we saw that, that, you know, end moment
- 16:22with Darth Vader and, and all that, and I thought that at the
- 16:25time, I thought now I can't wait to see them together and how
- 16:29that plays out. And it is really interesting,
- 16:32isn't it, what it does? Yeah, it's long form.
- 16:36When we had someone ask us recently what our thoughts were
- 16:39on when Obi Wan in A New Hope, when he says to Vader, if you
- 16:42strike me down, I'll become more powerful than you can imagine.
- 16:46What did that mean? When that movie first came out,
- 16:49they had no plans for a second movie at the time.
- 16:53They hoped, but it wasn't finalized yet.
- 16:55And. Yeah.
- 16:57It's a good question there. Was no Force ghost at that
- 17:00moment either. You know, we kind of tossed this
- 17:02around. We didn't know if you take it
- 17:04into consideration that there was no second and third movie in
- 17:08a trilogy and it was its own entity, kind of a throwaway
- 17:12line. But then if you put in the Force
- 17:15ghost influence and that sort of thing, it kind of ropes it into
- 17:18a little bit better. There's a lot of wiggle room in
- 17:21there, yeah. It, it, it is wild.
- 17:23Well, it's just, it's also like now when you watch it and we've,
- 17:26I think we've talked about this before though, but when he's in
- 17:28the desert with Luke and you know, and he says, no, that's
- 17:32the name. I've not heard a long time.
- 17:34And and you go he but Alec Guinness did so much, he gave us
- 17:39so much that I've seen people's videos that they've made where
- 17:42it's like these flashbacks just off of those looks and all the
- 17:45stuff. So, yeah, I love the one.
- 17:48Actually. It was done years ago I think
- 17:50like a Japanese animator did it or not a a film company where
- 17:55they did the scene the fight scene with Vader and.
- 17:58Oh yeah. Yes.
- 17:59It's been like if it was modern and the battle is so much bigger
- 18:04and I really dig that. I think it's cool.
- 18:06And then like when he does, because that's the other thing
- 18:08is, you know, he Obi Wan goes away right as the Saber goes
- 18:12through goes away. So how what did he know that?
- 18:15You know, I mean, I guess when Yoda disappears, it was to infer
- 18:20that it was the same thing. Yeah, it's like an instantaneous
- 18:24joining of the force. As a little kid, I just was like
- 18:27where he just disappeared into a pile of robes.
- 18:32I was so confused as a little kid.
- 18:34And it is funny, if you think about it, that Vader like steps.
- 18:37Oh yeah, yeah, no, he's just making sure he's not.
- 18:40Writing. Nothing left.
- 18:42OK, we're good. He's he's.
- 18:43This tall. Is there a trap door?
- 18:48I saw a meme the other day about the scene with Yoda where he
- 18:51dies, where as a parent you understand this scene with Yoda
- 18:55when your child asks you so many questions you just decide to die
- 18:59rather than answer all the questions.
- 19:02I'm too tired for this. That's it.
- 19:05Yeah. I have to say, with the Obi Wan
- 19:08in the Kenobi series, the final fight and then you Fast forward
- 19:12to like A New Hope. I think I have.
- 19:14I was OK with it. I have more of a problem since
- 19:17we were again talking about the changes that come with Star Wars
- 19:22sometimes. I have more of a problem with
- 19:25the undermining of Darth Vader's sacrifice when he threw
- 19:28Palpatine down the shaft. And then in the sequel trilogy,
- 19:32Palpatine returns, as we all know.
- 19:34And so mine's on the other side of that because I want, I don't
- 19:38want Palpatine to return because Vader, Anakin returned in that
- 19:42moment. And it's like.
- 19:44That's I, I agree. I mean, you know, look, if I'm,
- 19:48if I'm going to be really brutally honest, I, I was
- 19:50brutally honest with the movies when they came out and I was in
- 19:52all of them. You know, I did voices in all of
- 19:54them. But like with Force Awakens and
- 19:55stuff, I felt like I didn't like Han Solo getting killed.
- 19:58I don't care what Harrison Ford wants, don't kill Han Solo.
- 20:01Han Solo and. And don't bring the Emperor back
- 20:03like that. If you want to get anecdotes to
- 20:05come back, fine, but don't have it be the emperor like that it
- 20:08because I agree. I think it does take away.
- 20:11Well, return to the Jedi is is a magical ending.
- 20:13And you know, I was a little kid when it came out and that was
- 20:16the happily ever after. And then we cut forward and you
- 20:18go, oh, so none of it mattered. It's like, I don't know why.
- 20:21Why? That part is hard.
- 20:23Otherwise it's just two geriatrics having a fight in a
- 20:26hallway in A New Hope. You know what I mean?
- 20:28But The thing is, it's fine. They're slower.
- 20:31Yeah, exactly. It's.
- 20:33We've all been there, my shoulder.
- 20:38My back I mean. I feel that now, but how cool is
- 20:43it when Obi Wan in A New Hope looks over and he sees Leia and
- 20:47Luke and now that we have little Leia in the Kenobi series, he
- 20:51sees them both and he's like, OK, my job here is done.
- 20:54And then that moment happens. But he gives that little, that
- 20:57little smile, that just that little Obi Wan smirk that he
- 21:00knows. Oh, it's such a it's, it's
- 21:02magic. It's so great, like now he sees
- 21:04them together. I've never thought of that,
- 21:08Really. You made Obi Wan Kenobi think of
- 21:10something. How?
- 21:11Me. Beautiful.
- 21:13It's beautiful. You're so right.
- 21:15It's fantastic. And now that we have little Leia
- 21:20and some back story and the beautiful moments they had
- 21:22together when he tells them about her mother and her father
- 21:26and Oh my God. Yeah, because we were thinking
- 21:29he's just looking at Luke, really.
- 21:30No, but now, now we know. Well, now I've kind of hijacked
- 21:34everything as I do, but is there anything you want to ask me
- 21:37specifically before you know, so I don't go Oh, I didn't get to
- 21:40ask that. Is there anything we.
- 21:41Have a document. We'll always have, yeah, yeah,
- 21:43we have. But we'll always have questions
- 21:45afterwards. Darn it.
- 21:46We got to ask James next time. I love this question.
- 21:51Lauren comes up with most of this, but I I read through these
- 21:55and this is the one that really grabbed my attention that I'd
- 21:57love to know from you. Since I already mentioned like
- 21:59happy Mall and Dark Obi Wan, have you noticed when Obi Wan
- 22:06duels with mall and we've talked about this a lot of times on
- 22:09different episodes of the show that Obi Wan kind of loses it a
- 22:12little bit. He gets sloppy, he kind of gets.
- 22:17Oh yeah, I saw a clip of that where you were talking about.
- 22:20Did you so anyway? Yeah, we were saying that his
- 22:23only trait as a Sith is that he becomes a sloppy figure.
- 22:27Yeah. That's not what would happen.
- 22:30But you stop that right now, getting very frustrated.
- 22:35Wow, that's the worst we get. Here.
- 22:37We have Anakin over here who's just like hot mess express, and
- 22:41Obi Wan kind of gets a little sloppy and loses it, growls.
- 22:45Yeah. Yeah, that's about it.
- 22:47But in your opinion, James, if you could sum it up, when you're
- 22:51performing that, is there like a mindset that you go into that is
- 22:55Obi Wan's at the time? Could you describe that?
- 22:57Like what do you think Obi Wan's going through emotionally when
- 23:01he's dealing with Moll? That's a great question.
- 23:03It really is because, you know, the other thing is, is I know
- 23:06that so many people would say, oh, it's just, it's just an
- 23:09animated series. So you're just voice actors.
- 23:11You're probably not kind of part of that whole thing.
- 23:14But so much of it does come from that.
- 23:16For one, as I've said before, you know, they always had
- 23:18cameras on us. And you do as an actor, you just
- 23:21go there. And I really very much so.
- 23:25And so when you would hear those little grunts and groans, it
- 23:27would be, you know, I'm reading the stage direction of what's
- 23:30happening in the battle. And, you know, and Dave Filoni
- 23:33might say, you know, OK, so now he's he's really getting him.
- 23:37He's getting the best of him. And he's kind of frustrated, you
- 23:39know, and it's he'll be like, you know, and you do that.
- 23:45And so I would be making these expressions.
- 23:48And I kind of wonder sometimes it's like they saw it in me and
- 23:52then they put it out there on Obi Wan.
- 23:54And I think it made sense too, because it's the one place there
- 23:58is deeper, darker passion, anger, whatever inside him than
- 24:04anyone else. Right then, all because bygone
- 24:07and you know, Satine later, but you know, it's, it's a deep
- 24:12rooted thing. So I would go there at very
- 24:14much. So when we would record those
- 24:16things. And so then it would come up.
- 24:18I, I think most of the time they would take the sounds that we
- 24:21did when we so the way it work is we would record, then they
- 24:24animate to what we've done. And then sometimes they would
- 24:28come back with ADR, automatic dialogue replacement where
- 24:32you're watching it and then reacting.
- 24:35So like if I was watching the scene, I might be, you know,
- 24:41like that. But I think most of the ones
- 24:44with Maul like that, I think it was probably taken from Sam and
- 24:47I just, you know, him doing his thing.
- 24:52And so it was in the moment. So yeah, I mean, absolutely,
- 24:57you're right. Sam is so good as mall, right?
- 25:00Is he? Oh, he's so bad.
- 25:02You. Don't know if this is fair for
- 25:05me to ask. Is he a little intimidating when
- 25:07he's doing mall do you feel? I don't know.
- 25:10I would be, but I'm not a voice actor actress.
- 25:14You know, where it was the most was when it was him and Clancy
- 25:17together, Clancy Brown as Savagio Press.
- 25:21The two of them would be, Dave would put them both together,
- 25:25which is is unique because usually like Matt and I,
- 25:29sometimes we would be together too.
- 25:30But usually the people that have the most lines together, they
- 25:33separate in the room because they don't want bleed on the
- 25:36microphone. But I think he felt it was
- 25:38better, you know, I mean, they had control of it enough and
- 25:41they felt that they always got a better reaction when Matt and I
- 25:43were next to each other. And then it was the same with
- 25:46Sam and Clancy. And I do remember at times we'd
- 25:49be like, oh, that's the dark side of the room over there.
- 25:53Don't go over there. You just glance up and see it
- 25:57getting too. Real over this you.
- 26:01Know like you're glad you're wearing headphones because when
- 26:05he is doing that stuff, if you weren't your ears would like
- 26:08blah because he. Has because.
- 26:12The headphones at least kind of protect your ears a little from
- 26:14it because you can control your volume.
- 26:16And but, yeah, I remember there were times where he, you know, I
- 26:19mean, he's working up a sweat doing that, you know?
- 26:23Yeah. You know, I mean, it's, it's
- 26:25fantastic to watch, but it is intense for sure.
- 26:29Yeah. We're really, really holding out
- 26:31hope that you'll be in the mall show.
- 26:34I know you probably can't say anything if you are, but we
- 26:37heard, I heard today somebody sent me a video of Sam saying
- 26:42that he has unfinished business with someone specific.
- 26:45And I was like. We all know who it has to be.
- 26:50I, I know nothing about the show.
- 26:53All I know is, you know, Sam and I are at some comic cons
- 26:57together and he says they're having fun.
- 26:59That's great. That's good.
- 27:00All right. It would be wonderful.
- 27:02I think the dynamic between Yeah Mall and Obi Wan is fascinating
- 27:08on so many levels. Yeah, I agree.
- 27:11I totally agree. Really deep seated stuff there,
- 27:14especially on mall's end. Well, I remember so much when we
- 27:17were in Season 4. Did he return in Season 4?
- 27:23I think it's. 4. He came back in season 4 and
- 27:26it's you know, and it can't be when when he says it can't be,
- 27:29you know, those moments. I remember all that going like,
- 27:32wow, this is this is going to be really something for the ages.
- 27:36This is, you know, all those little moments throughout those
- 27:39next few seasons. But the best, you know,
- 27:42everybody you know, comes to the table at a Comic Con and they
- 27:44say what's your favorite, you know, episode and or when we do
- 27:47the panels. And I I'd still say, you know,
- 27:50the lawless with Sam and Anna. And it was awfully mean.
- 27:55I've shared that before, but because I did not know what was
- 27:58going to happen. But yeah, yeah, I did not.
- 28:02We got the script right then. So you know.
- 28:04I know in the season 2 when they introduced the Duchess I'm like
- 28:08well she's not in any of the others.
- 28:09We knew what was coming eventually if she's not in
- 28:12later. Although everybody did that with
- 28:16Ahsoka, right? So.
- 28:18It's true, yeah. And apparently, you know you can
- 28:21die and come back, so let's. Do that.
- 28:25Yeah, yeah. Everyone but Qui Gon can get
- 28:28stabbed. Everyone but qui gon.
- 28:29I'm so this is my platform, this is my, this is my.
- 28:33Qui gon, qui gon and cetine. She didn't come back.
- 28:37One of the big complaints we have is that they don't
- 28:39reference the team in like the Kenobi series in particular,
- 28:43which is. I was actually really surprised
- 28:45by that. Really surprised.
- 28:47But they didn't reference Asoka either.
- 28:49Yeah, either one. No, I, I was very surprised by
- 28:53that. And I thought, gosh, because I
- 28:55thought for certain they would. You know, you get Cate Blanchett
- 28:57and there you go. You're done.
- 28:59They were easy. And and that was because that
- 29:02was always it, you know, I'm doing Ewan McGregor's voice in
- 29:05Anna always said she was just, she was just thinking of Kate
- 29:08Blanchett in her head, you know? Fabulous.
- 29:11And that one way of doing, you know, and it's just, yeah.
- 29:15So I'm surprised. So I don't know if that, you
- 29:18know, it's, it's curious to see what they will do with it.
- 29:21I I would love to see more of it.
- 29:22I'm a I'm a fan like anybody else.
- 29:24I guess so. Yeah, Speaking of Satine, have
- 29:27you noticed that Corky looks just like you?
- 29:31I don't know what you're talking about, you can try it.
- 29:37It is. It is probably one of the top
- 29:40questions I get at comic cons. I bet, yeah.
- 29:44And you know, I mean I. You can't answer, I just.
- 29:48I can't because they, you know, and they'll they Dave would
- 29:50never give me his his real opinion of it, I'm sure, because
- 29:53then he knows. Well, see, I'm like Superman.
- 29:55I can't tell a lie. So it's really like, so people
- 29:59will go like they'll come up to me.
- 30:01And if it's, you know, Ratchet and Clank, which is a video game
- 30:04series, I do, I play Ratchet or it's Star Wars or whatever.
- 30:07And and they'll say, you know, are you doing this?
- 30:09And I'll go no. And they'll say, OK.
- 30:12And I say, now if I say no, you have to know I'm like Superman,
- 30:15I can't tell a lie. So if I say no, I mean no.
- 30:18But if you ask me something and I go, Oh yeah, that's, I mean,
- 30:22yeah, then then you know that I'm trying to be Superman.
- 30:29But maybe I'm Clark Ken. OK, so now we know how to decode
- 30:34all of your answers. That's right.
- 30:36That's right. Where's your code book?
- 30:39Although, although I will say no, as far as I know, I'm I'm,
- 30:42I've not been part of the mall series, no.
- 30:46OK, well, there's still time maybe.
- 30:48Yes, there is, right? We've one of our most popular
- 30:52episodes is the is Corky A Kenobi, and we've recorded that
- 30:59that was one of our first episodes and it's still one of
- 31:01our like a top believe. That people are always wondering
- 31:04what what people think. They want it to be true.
- 31:07They want it to be true so badly.
- 31:10I think the roughest part is, is let's let's just say it's true
- 31:14for a moment, OK? Then, you know, Obi Wan's still
- 31:18around, but Satine isn't, right. So it's not like you could have
- 31:22this wonderful kind of, you know, Thanksgiving, family
- 31:25gathering later or anything, you know, although it would be
- 31:30interesting if he visited Tatooine or something, right?
- 31:33See, I can play like any other fan.
- 31:35Yeah. It's just like these these
- 31:38things would be really interesting, you know, within
- 31:39the timelines and stuff. We do these head cannons, we
- 31:43have them all the time. We we discuss these all the
- 31:45time. Do you have a favorite head
- 31:48cannon by chance for Obi Wan? I just really still still want
- 31:53them to bring Anna and I back and do the young Obi and Sateen
- 31:59story. Yes.
- 32:01I just think you just do it like a three-part animated
- 32:04miniseries, right? We've talked about this before,
- 32:07but it's yeah. So that yeah, I think last time
- 32:10I said six part. We can hire a plane to fly a
- 32:14banner over Disney. There you go.
- 32:18We get a petition going and we get I don't know how many.
- 32:22And then at every Comic Con, I go when people go, can I get
- 32:24your autograph and go? Yes, but I need yours first.
- 32:27Sign my petition. Oh, they would.
- 32:30They would be so angry at me, you know?
- 32:32Yeah. It's like I get the phone calls,
- 32:34you know, Then hold for Mr. Filoni.
- 32:36You know, it's like Dame stop it, Stop it.
- 32:40You can't do that. I.
- 32:43Want to know what a phone call with Dave Filoni is like?
- 32:47Yeah, I've gotten a phone call a few times, Yeah.
- 32:49Because he's he's like my kind of my hero.
- 32:51He's like a hometown hero for me.
- 32:53We're from the same area. We like the same hockey team.
- 32:57Oh, is that right? Oh, we we go way back.
- 33:00Are you a hockey fan? Born and raised a Penguins
- 33:04Pittsburgh Penguins fan grew up wow near the town of Pittsburgh.
- 33:07No, I was in Pittsburgh this year.
- 33:09How did you like it? It was good I was there last
- 33:12year too. Did did you have a good time
- 33:14there? Did you go to a hockey?
- 33:16No. OK, So when I go to Comic Cons,
- 33:20I get on the plane and then I fly to the airport and then they
- 33:24take me in a little car to the hotel and they take me in a
- 33:28little bigger car because then it's me and Ashley and Matt to
- 33:31the Convention Center. And then the car brings us back
- 33:33to the hotel and then we stay there and then we go back and
- 33:38then forth and back and forth for three days.
- 33:39And then they take us back to the hotel or the airport and
- 33:42then we're gone and we never get to see anything.
- 33:46That's a shame. It is although my wife and I
- 33:49walked around. You guys make really fun videos
- 33:51though. Behind Yeah, you're the videos
- 33:53of all y'all together. Fantastic.
- 33:56It's the best. Ashley always goes, OK, what
- 33:58should we do this time? You know, like what are we going
- 34:01to do, guys? We got to top this, OK?
- 34:03And then she'll get and I go, oh, oh, oh, OK.
- 34:06And then, you know, we have to go along with whatever, Ashley.
- 34:09You're good sports. I think it's great.
- 34:11I think it's great. I love seeing them.
- 34:13I actually like to come up with like I'm a, I'm a bit of a goof.
- 34:16I like coming up with ideas too. And so and Matt, Matt is one of
- 34:20the funniest people you ever meet.
- 34:21It's just like my wife. My wife is like an introvert, so
- 34:24quiet. But when she drops a comedy
- 34:26bomb, it's like. It's cold.
- 34:28I can't wait to meet her at a con.
- 34:30Honestly I feel so left out. Y'all have all met and stuff and
- 34:34I'm just up here in the mountains being in nature and
- 34:37not doing anything. That sounds actually lovely to
- 34:40me. Now, did you know that Matt
- 34:42Lanter was on Weakest Link? Did you see that?
- 34:44No, I didn't see. I don't.
- 34:47If you have Hulu you can go to weakest Link the the celebrity
- 34:50version. You did a celebrity version of
- 34:53weakest link this last season and look for teen idols or
- 34:57whatever and they did one with all the from 90210 and Friday
- 35:00Night Lights and all that. Matt Lanter was on there.
- 35:03I'm going to have to go see it. I have Hulu, I can watch it
- 35:07tonight. Yeah, I was watching it the
- 35:09other night and texting him and sending him pictures of, you
- 35:13know, his responses and things. And I'll, I'll give this one
- 35:16away. His very first answer he gets
- 35:19wrong and and he does. And you go like, how could I
- 35:24won't say what it is, but I go like how could he have gotten
- 35:26that wrong? And my wife, no, my wife goes, I
- 35:29bet he can't see it. He can only hear her because he
- 35:33missed a letter like. They asked what does.
- 35:37You know these? What do these initials stand
- 35:39for? Oh, I see.
- 35:41We're a sports initials and I'm like, Matt's a sports guy.
- 35:44There's no reason he should have got that wrong.
- 35:47And it was because so Jane Lynch, Janie, I've known Jane
- 35:51for years. She's wonderful.
- 35:52She's the host of it now. She's like 15 feet away from
- 35:56him. And he's, you know, in his thing
- 35:59at his little station and he's doing a stand that far away and
- 36:03they don't have it. Like the audience sees the
- 36:05question up on screens, but the people there don't see them.
- 36:09So he can't read the, you know, he's not looking at like a
- 36:11prompter or anything. He's just seeing her.
- 36:14And he realized he's like, yeah, after the first one, I went, oh,
- 36:17I got to really focus and concentrate.
- 36:19So I. Don't want to be the weakest
- 36:22link. Now I know I.
- 36:23Say that so when you watch it, know that of course Matt Lanter
- 36:26knew the answer to the first question.
- 36:29Look at Obi Wan trying to cover for his.
- 36:32Boy. He even here.
- 36:37No, I love it. I have this whole like picture
- 36:40in my head because he lives up the street and he has the high
- 36:42ground that he comes down, you know, to your level and brings a
- 36:46casserole over and like, hey, James, here's the casserole.
- 36:49I feel bad. You're below me.
- 36:50Bye. And then he goes up to his, you
- 36:51know, I don't it's. Just he.
- 36:53Brings lasagna. Because he's just.
- 36:56Cooking in the in the molten lava.
- 36:57Yeah, yeah. But he's got no legs to bring it
- 37:01down on. He goes careful.
- 37:04That cheese is like lava. Yeah.
- 37:07That's. Tucson so when when we first
- 37:11moved here and the, the neighborhood was brand new and
- 37:15so they were still building places.
- 37:16So there was no house. And right now there's a house
- 37:19between. So I have to go down at the end
- 37:20of a cul-de-sac and then his house.
- 37:23But then it's actually some other friends of mine and they
- 37:26actually produce movies and stuff and they live in the house
- 37:28there. And they said, well, you can cut
- 37:30through to go see Anakin if you need to, which is very nice.
- 37:32But I always feel funny doing that.
- 37:35But so at first we had the first snow here and my daughter was
- 37:40still young and we have a hill behind us and she wanted to go
- 37:43down the hill and Matt had an extra little sled and so we
- 37:47walked up there. Those are my fond memories of
- 37:48going up to get go up the high ground to get the sled from
- 37:52Anakin to take my. That's a nice.
- 37:55Go down, but yeah, so. That's a cute story that's
- 37:58really nice. Really sweet.
- 38:01You guys didn't have snow where you lived before, did you?
- 38:04No, my first time in snow I was something like, I think I was
- 38:08like 48 years old when I first experienced snow.
- 38:12And. Yeah.
- 38:13So now we're here. We live in Tennessee and there's
- 38:16snow every year. It's it's for like 2 days and
- 38:19then it's gone, which is great. It's manageable.
- 38:21And so it's exciting and nobody knows how to drive in it, which
- 38:23is great. Yeah.
- 38:26We were just talking about this with one of our parents who
- 38:29lives in, she lives in South Carolina or North Carolina, I
- 38:32can't remember which. And she's like, yeah, when it's
- 38:34like 3 inches of snow, everything shuts down.
- 38:36I'm like nothing shuts down here when there's 6 feet of.
- 38:39Snow. No.
- 38:40No. Easy.
- 38:42Yeah, we have. We get a ton of snow here and
- 38:45they don't even cancel school. They think it's character
- 38:47building to to wade through 24 inches of snow to get to school
- 38:51here. So.
- 38:52They only canceled classes when I was in college once because it
- 38:56was actual temperature -40 and it was not safe to walk to
- 38:59class. That's different.
- 39:01That's cold, cold. It was very cold.
- 39:04I bought a scarf that came up to my eyeballs and only my eyes
- 39:08were out. I had It was just.
- 39:09And this isn't even the tundra here.
- 39:11This is just Illinois, gives Hoff.
- 39:13The new perspective. Yeah, we do love Hoff that
- 39:17Leanne and I. Oh, I love and this reminds me,
- 39:19we were going to ask you. Yes.
- 39:22If you could go to any Star Wars filming location, where would
- 39:26you go? Oh, see, now I like that because
- 39:28a lot of times we'll get asked, you know, what planet would you
- 39:30go to? Or sure, what?
- 39:32Yeah, filming. Yeah, filming anyone that you
- 39:35could go to, any era, any media. Well, you know, I did the fan
- 39:41film Kenobi with my friend. That's right, Jamie.
- 39:45Costa and I played the bad guy in that, and we shot that at
- 39:49Trona Pinnacles in the desert in California where they actually
- 39:52shot some of Star Wars. Very nice.
- 39:54So that was very cool. And that was a bit of a, you
- 39:57know, kind of a neat little thing to check off the list.
- 39:59Because. We actually shot in areas where
- 40:01they shot, so to some degree I was like, wow.
- 40:03I was like, I was there and it was really cool.
- 40:05But where would I want to go now I've been also when you go to
- 40:11Lucas, when you would go to the ranch, when we would go up to
- 40:14Skywalker Ranch and such and you're driving up in Marin.
- 40:18Those trees in that area is where they did and or you know
- 40:21that the whole. Oh yeah.
- 40:24Speeder Thanks, man. Yeah, I had an Obi Wan senior
- 40:27moment. Speeder bike James Yes.
- 40:30And zipping through, I was picturing Princess Leia.
- 40:33Yeah, yeah. And.
- 40:36So I guess to some degree I've been to those, but where would I
- 40:41really want to go? And I've been on the set of The
- 40:43Mandalorian, which is, Oh yeah, just a giant circle.
- 40:48It is just a, you're just that's it.
- 40:52And, and there's the roof even has camera or you know, screens
- 40:56on it. And that is really weird because
- 41:00they said that people even walk into the walls sometimes.
- 41:03Oh, I bet altered reality. Yeah, that would be.
- 41:07Yeah, I think Hoth would be really cool.
- 41:09I mean well, I know. Oh right.
- 41:12Oh no Pug very cool. No, but I I like Dagobah.
- 41:19I think the set for Dagobah would be really.
- 41:22That would be cool. Minus the snakes, I couldn't do
- 41:25that. They're fake, right?
- 41:29No, they're not. They're real.
- 41:30That wasn't where. Mark Himmel actually got bit by
- 41:34a snake, yeah. Did we talk about this?
- 41:37We talked about this because we did the whole episode on The
- 41:40Cave scene. Yeah.
- 41:41Oh, yeah. I just tend to, like, take
- 41:44things out of my brain when I don't like them.
- 41:47Like snakes? Now I'm, you know, The thing is,
- 41:51is when you've been in Star Wars as long as I have, I, I so now
- 41:55I've been in Star Wars for 23 years.
- 41:57I've worked in Star Wars and then I grew up with Star Wars.
- 42:00But see, I'm usually the oldest guy in the room and I know I am
- 42:04now. And so I can always say that I
- 42:07experienced these things when they first came out, you know,
- 42:10and when that scene in The Cave happened as a little kid, your
- 42:16brain like it was different than when kids see it now.
- 42:20I feel like because they there's so much already kind of they're
- 42:22just exposed to of Star Wars and it's not this shocking thing.
- 42:27So how does it hit you that scene?
- 42:31What is what does that scene mean to you?
- 42:33How does it hit you? Was it as freaky as it would
- 42:36have been for, you know, how old was I at the time?
- 42:39Gosh, I don't even know. Well, I remember when, you know,
- 42:44if you see a head roll as a young kid, I'm a little freaked
- 42:49out. But I was also, I was, I've
- 42:52always been more into the symbology of stuff.
- 42:55And so I knew it was more than just like a freaky, like, oh,
- 42:58why is Luke's head on the ground?
- 43:00Invader's helmet, You know? And it was fun with Lauren when
- 43:03we got to explore that entire episode and like what it meant
- 43:06to us and what we think it was supposed to mean versus what
- 43:09people took away from it. And I always took it away as
- 43:12you're going to end up here if you don't make the right
- 43:15decisions. And I think that still holds a
- 43:17little bit today. But I mean, seeing a head roll
- 43:19across the floor and then you're looking up at yourself is a
- 43:22little is a little creepy, but I love stuff like that.
- 43:26And also practical, you know, filmmaking back then too, that
- 43:29was just so great because it looks so real, you know, and it
- 43:32wasn't like some fake. It was Marks face in the helmet,
- 43:35you know, like. Shoved up through the floor.
- 43:38I never got to talk to him about that.
- 43:40I've interviewed him so many times.
- 43:41I should have asked him about that.
- 43:42Like how was that? Because you do it, it's such a a
- 43:47look right the. Oh yeah, I mean.
- 43:50The like, glassy eye. And the there's like the steam
- 43:53and fog around it. And so yeah, yeah, it's pretty
- 43:56good. I love it.
- 43:57The magic of filmmaking, yeah, that's I, I like that.
- 44:00I think that you're right. I think it is careful or you're
- 44:03going to end up here. I think that that's what we
- 44:06should have taken from it, right?
- 44:09But instead, all of us went, oh, it's because he's made her son
- 44:13right after. We knew.
- 44:14Oh sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:16Of. Spoiler alert, sorry.
- 44:17Oh, I mean, yeah, I. Haven't.
- 44:19Seen we'll put the tags. On your late guy.
- 44:22Well, my mother still hasn't seen it.
- 44:25Oh, Oh my. Gosh, she was a Star Trekkie.
- 44:27But let me tell you something. She feels bad for Obi Wan.
- 44:31She she thinks he's a very sad man and she feels bad for him.
- 44:34She thinks he's a very good man and she's watching YouTube
- 44:38videos and she's seen Clone Wars episodes.
- 44:40So I'm I'm getting her in but she hasn't seen any of the
- 44:43original trilogy. So she has all these questions
- 44:46and so I have to supplement for her but she's never spoiler
- 44:49alert. It would work for her because
- 44:51she she has never seen it. Wow, I know.
- 44:54That's awesome. You know I did.
- 44:56I don't know if I've ever talked about this.
- 44:58You can tell me if I did, but if not, because I'm thinking about
- 45:01putting this out. So years ago I had a friend of
- 45:04mine, Joseph Scrimshaw, who's a very talented podcaster and
- 45:07comedian, but he's also a huge Star Wars fan and A and a very
- 45:11talented writer and a stage writer.
- 45:13I wanted to do a one man show of Obi Wan Kenobi telling the story
- 45:18of Star Wars from his certain point of view.
- 45:21Yeah, that'd be great with the 1st 6 movies and Clone Wars of
- 45:27that. And I have the script.
- 45:30I, I've been sitting on it for about 6 years and I've
- 45:32considered just reading it because I was going to do it
- 45:36where I was going to, you know, hello there and I come out and
- 45:39I'm on stage and then, and then I can age back and forth
- 45:42different versions of Obi Wan and stuff.
- 45:44And it was going to be a big production.
- 45:45There'd be a lot of animations and things going on.
- 45:47Of course, I would have had to have gotten permission from
- 45:50Lucasfilm and they never would have given me permission.
- 45:52No. But but I have the script and I
- 45:57think I should just read it on my YouTube channel sometime
- 46:01because I think of people like your mom then yeah, Star Wars
- 46:04from that. Very sad.
- 46:10She has tinnitus, so she lists she falls asleep to audio books
- 46:14and listens to them all all day long.
- 46:17So if you read anything, first of all, she loves you because of
- 46:20the show and everything. And the last time you were on
- 46:22the show on our podcast, she was here and was like waiting in the
- 46:28living room, like she was visiting during that time.
- 46:31So I told her, don't call. We're doing another one.
- 46:34She's. Like, oh.
- 46:35He's so talented. It's so, but if you read
- 46:38something on YouTube, she would undoubtedly love that because of
- 46:42the tinnitus thing. And she's, she's kind of in it,
- 46:45you know, she's in Star Wars. So Oh my goodness.
- 46:47Hello, Lee Ansom. Hello there, Lee Ansom.
- 46:51Her name's Gina. Gina, hello there.
- 46:54Gina Toby Wan Kenobi, The Force is strong with you, my dear.
- 46:57Live long and prosper. Oh my God, she'll lose it.
- 47:01She will look. Thank you, that was so kind.
- 47:05I hope she can hear it. No, Crank it up, mother.
- 47:09Yeah, so I have, I have tinnitus as well from years of, you know,
- 47:13working and sound and stuff and and wearing headphones and and
- 47:17things and then too too loudest stuff.
- 47:20So I I know that feeling. Oh, you know the feeling.
- 47:23Drowned it out, yeah. I have it too, it just got bad
- 47:27this last year and I have to sometimes put headphones on to
- 47:31sleep too. It's so loud when you suddenly
- 47:34notice it, you're just like. Oh, it can be.
- 47:36Diet can can. Certain things in our diet can
- 47:38aggravate it too. Coffee and chocolate, things
- 47:40like that. Can't.
- 47:40Yeah, Well, I can't give up coffee and chocolate, James.
- 47:43I know. How could you suggest?
- 47:45It with the noise I'd. Rather suffer.
- 47:52So on this similar topic, one of our patrons actually said would
- 47:55you do a Star Wars audio book? And if so, which book?
- 47:58That came from our patron, Adela OH.
- 48:01Hello there, Adela. We asked them to our our lovely
- 48:04patrons to submit any questions that we may want to throw at you
- 48:07and that was one of them since you kind of were on the same
- 48:09vein of. I love your patrons by the way,
- 48:12and everybody watching this needs to become a patron of.
- 48:15Yours, yes. Because it's a, it's a great
- 48:19group. It's a great group of people.
- 48:21And so, yeah, I, you know, I did do, we did a Clone Wars book a
- 48:26while back where we all read different ones.
- 48:29Oh yeah, I have that one. I don't.
- 48:31Know how many stories there were?
- 48:32But like, I think Matt read a couple, I read a couple,
- 48:36Katmayev and Ashley did, and they were Clone War stories and
- 48:41that was fun. And then I did an excerpt from
- 48:44the Kenobi book, John Jackson Miller's book, which I thought
- 48:47was fantastic. You know, I got to be honest,
- 48:49as, as much as, you know, we all appreciate and love the Kenobi
- 48:51series, I thought they were going to die.
- 48:54I wish they had based it on that.
- 48:55Did you ever read the Kenobi book?
- 48:57I did. And I actually, I listened to
- 48:59the audio book and I listened to your excerpt and I really wish
- 49:03you had done the whole book. That's very nice.
- 49:06I thought he did great though. That was, Who was it that did
- 49:10that? Yes, not mark the other one.
- 49:15Mark Thompson was it? Mark Thompson was it?
- 49:17No, I don't. Think it was Mark Thompson.
- 49:18It was. It was.
- 49:19I can picture his face I saw him at.
- 49:22I'm out of this because I don't know but.
- 49:25I thought he, I thought he'd. Be great, you know, but he he
- 49:29does a very good Ewan McGregor, you know, and my Obi Wan by that
- 49:33point had become it kind of its own little thing.
- 49:37And so when I listened to mine, I went, oh, his, his sounds
- 49:39better so. All the Obi Wans get together
- 49:43like no, you're the better Obi Wan.
- 49:44No, you're the better they. Are the Obi Wans?
- 49:45What do you think? I don't know.
- 49:47No, I think you're very good. Oh, hello.
- 49:49Hello It. Would be the most polite
- 49:51argument ever. But someone would end up losing
- 49:56a Lib at some point, yes? Someone would have the high
- 49:59ground. Ewan McGregor has the high
- 50:01ground. If you saw that picture of me
- 50:03and I in Star Wars Celebration London, where we.
- 50:05Did one of my favorites. I, you know, and I've got that
- 50:09goofy look, as I said, you know, on my face.
- 50:11But he is like, you know, a foot taller than me easily, it seems
- 50:16like. So yeah, he's got.
- 50:18Wipes in his shoes, I'm. Just kidding.
- 50:21And if he's having a good hair day that adds another like 6
- 50:23inches. Even that hair is so.
- 50:25Voluminous I. Need to like spike mine up like
- 50:27I used to wear it now. Do you remember, you know the
- 50:30movie 16 Candles? Do you ever watch 16 Candles
- 50:33and, and some of the other and The Breakfast Club and stuff?
- 50:36So Anthony Michael Hall was in those.
- 50:38He played the the geek, the nerd, right.
- 50:40Well, he and I are about the same age and we were.
- 50:43So when those came out, I was the same age as him and I looked
- 50:46exactly like him. And I used to get stopped.
- 50:49People used to stop me and think I was him.
- 50:51I've posted pictures even before.
- 50:54But it's funny because now he's, he's a big guy.
- 50:57You know, he grew up and I never did.
- 50:59I see him at comic cons now and I'm like, I need to just go.
- 51:02So believe it or not, we actually still look just a
- 51:04little. That's funny.
- 51:07How funny. Funny.
- 51:08Oh, man. Breakfast Club.
- 51:10I grew up with that movie. Yeah.
- 51:12It's. Yeah, it's supposed to take
- 51:16place somewhere around here in a town that doesn't exist, but.
- 51:20Well, and then they shot it in the they made the library in the
- 51:22gym, right? They were they.
- 51:25Oh yeah, yeah. So that was all a set, which was
- 51:27amazing, but you know, the original cut of that movie was
- 51:30over 3 hours. Oh my gosh, really?
- 51:34I'm kind of not surprised. I, I I could see that happening,
- 51:37yeah. Yeah, I wish they would release
- 51:39it, you know, because John Hughes had made a cut.
- 51:42It was that, but tragic. So yeah, so I, I, I loved his
- 51:46movies. And so I wrote a movie called
- 51:47The Comic Shop that I'm still trying to get made at some
- 51:50point. But he just basically The
- 51:51Breakfast Club meets, you know. Cheers.
- 51:55You know, it's like. I love this.
- 51:57So much. That's a great mash up.
- 51:59Like this club set in a comic shop because these kids are
- 52:02waiting in line from 5 to 5 different kids from 5 different
- 52:06walks of life waiting in line to meet their favorite voice actor.
- 52:09And he's, you know, the mystery is, is this guy going to come
- 52:12because he's never been seen before and all of that.
- 52:15And, and so the whole movie is the five of them getting to
- 52:19figure out why are they there? What's their specific reason?
- 52:22Kind of like it was my homage to The Breakfast Club and each one
- 52:25of them story as to why they want to be one of the first five
- 52:28people in line because the first five people in line get this
- 52:30special package from the voice actor.
- 52:34Yeah, Oh. That's cool.
- 52:36Yeah. I wanted to ask you about that
- 52:37project because then we had talked about it last time you
- 52:40were on and can we crowdfund it? Well, you know, I guess that's
- 52:45The thing is maybe I should just do that.
- 52:47I you know, I, I thought about, I mean, there's so my producing
- 52:52partner is actually working on a a really huge big budget movie
- 52:55right now and he's going to be in different countries shooting
- 52:59and stuff and it's all still kind of top secret.
- 53:01But I'm like, the bummer is, is because he's busy.
- 53:05I can't like get in this morning.
- 53:07But I don't know. I mean, I guess I should I just,
- 53:10I'm, I always, I like, I, I, I don't like taking people's
- 53:15money. I always feel bad.
- 53:15I'm like, Oh, I don't want to so.
- 53:19I mean, I go yeah, but. Then I feel bad.
- 53:22Yeah, but they won't feel bad because you'll make the movie,
- 53:24dummy. Oh, OK Yeah.
- 53:26You know, it's like, and they'll be a part of it and they'll feel
- 53:28good about it. It's like, it's like when you go
- 53:30to the comic cons, you know, it's always feel bad.
- 53:33But I had somebody say to me once, you know, Consetta Parker,
- 53:37who? Consetta was my publicist.
- 53:38And Consetta is a wonderful Star Wars aficionado.
- 53:42She had a Star Wars wedding and all.
- 53:44We love Consetta. And she said to me, she said,
- 53:46James, you don't realize people get in line and then they talk
- 53:50to each other and they make friends and they make community.
- 53:53And then it's all this they have in common.
- 53:54Very true. They're time to meet you and
- 53:56then the other person's rooting for you and then vice versa.
- 53:59And then afterwards they share stories and it's this wonderful
- 54:02time. And I went, oh, OK.
- 54:03So I guess it would be the same thing for if I, you know, it's
- 54:06like I I'm always like, I don't want to put anybody out.
- 54:08I don't want to bother anybody, you know, it's like it would
- 54:11just make your movie, dummy, you know?
- 54:13So anyway. Yeah, I mean, people want the
- 54:16opportunity of giving like of supporting you in some sort of
- 54:19tangible way. And then, yeah, it's true.
- 54:21It's it's something that we've seen it with our podcast.
- 54:25It's weird to have people who want to become patrons because
- 54:30you feel like we're just talking.
- 54:31But then it does feel community and it gives people, and I'm
- 54:35speaking as your fan, like the chance to support your work and
- 54:40and help you if that's what you want, because we care about you
- 54:44and. Yes.
- 54:45They did that with the The Miss Fisher movie.
- 54:48That was a TV show that they wanted to turn into a movie and
- 54:51they didn't have the funding. It's very expensive because it's
- 54:53set in 1930 and they crowdfunded the whole thing and just gave
- 54:57people parts as extras as like a reward and oh, that's awesome,
- 55:02it became a movie. We love Miss Fisher on this
- 55:05show. I've got to check that out.
- 55:07Oh, it's great. What is?
- 55:08Very cute. Service is it on?
- 55:11You know it's on Acorn TV, but you could probably rent it on
- 55:15Amazon. It's it's just surprisingly
- 55:18delightful. Yes, it's a British show.
- 55:20It's Australian. Australian.
- 55:22It's Australian. Oh, OK.
- 55:24'Cause I have Brit box. Do you have Brit box?
- 55:26Do you know? That it might be on Brit box you
- 55:28can check. See, I'm wondering if it is.
- 55:30I'm going to check tonight 'cause that's pretty much all my
- 55:32life that I want. Yeah, it's fun.
- 55:35It's. She's a great character, really
- 55:38dynamic and and fabulous in every way smart.
- 55:42A lady detective in the 1930s. Well, we, yeah, we love all
- 55:47those detective shows. They have a lot of them on on
- 55:51Brit Box. There's one called Shakespeare
- 55:52and Hathaway which is very goofy.
- 55:55Like that one? Because we love, in fact, I'm
- 55:57going to if, if y'all get a chance to watch Shakespeare and
- 55:59Hathaway there it's, it's, it's these two private investigators.
- 56:04And then their assistant Sebastian, the actor is, is so
- 56:08wonderful. He's he's great and he is, I'm,
- 56:11I like that's the best role in the world because they always
- 56:13make him go undercover and he's this good looking young guy and
- 56:17he's got this wonderful, you know, British accent.
- 56:19No, but they, he does wonderful voices and he's so talented and
- 56:24I'm like, man, that guy should be like a movie star.
- 56:27He's so good. So yeah, that's, you know, I, I,
- 56:30we watch that. We watch as one of my favorite,
- 56:33all time favorite shows is called As Time Goes By, And it
- 56:36is with Dame Judi Dench and Jeffrey Palmer.
- 56:38He shot in the 90s in the early 2000s.
- 56:41But it's charming. It is about a couple that was in
- 56:44love when they were like 18 and 20 something.
- 56:48He was a soldier in the Korean War and she was a nurse.
- 56:51They met, they fell in love, and then he went to war.
- 56:54And then his letter got lost in the mail and they didn't see
- 56:56each other again until 38 years later.
- 56:59They reconnect. And it's a comedy and it's, it's
- 57:03hysterical, it's sweet, it's charming.
- 57:06It sounds like. Judi Dench is so good at comedy,
- 57:09she's brilliant. She's hilarious.
- 57:11I'm going to have to check that out.
- 57:12That sounds like just like something I would love.
- 57:15But anyway, we're trying to promote you, James, No.
- 57:18No, no. So, OK, so no, I hear you.
- 57:20I hear you. Yeah, 'cause I mean, my idea, as
- 57:22I shared before, I'm sure, was that I want the art from
- 57:24everybody and stuff to be in the movie.
- 57:26But yeah, I mean, and this movie would not cost that much, but
- 57:30we're just I just my so I made a movie called Hidden Blessings,
- 57:34which we've talked about before probably.
- 57:35But a young man in it, Mason McCarty, he played my son.
- 57:41He played the prodigal son, the the youngest, the youngest.
- 57:44And so, yeah. And he's he's actually been
- 57:47getting a lot. He was in one of the what's that
- 57:49horror film that that the clown, the scary.
- 57:53Oh it. No, not it the other this new
- 57:56one that is awful. They're like there's.
- 57:59No answer. They're like really bad, you
- 58:05know, I, I would never watch them.
- 58:07Yeah, I don't. Think I do.
- 58:08I can't watch horror. You know the.
- 58:10Creeper one or what? It's it's in one of the new
- 58:12ones, the terror fire. That's what it is terrified and
- 58:16he's in terrified 3 and but so he so Mason and I have been
- 58:20talking and I want Mason to help me produce this movie because he
- 58:24he's got a great eye and I'm like, oh, we should do it.
- 58:26So I just ran into him at a place that we frequent and say
- 58:30OK we got to meet. So now you all saying this is
- 58:34also as well. So now, OK, here you got it.
- 58:38Universe is sending you a secret.
- 58:40I mean, you've got 2 right here who are willing to support you
- 58:45and really and. I mean, it would be great.
- 58:48I'd have to sneak you into the movie somehow, That's the thing.
- 58:51So yeah. We're easy to look.
- 58:54We're both black. We can go.
- 58:55We can go Incognito. You can just make our outline
- 59:00like Hitchcock, and we'll just step into it.
- 59:05It is a fun movie. I, I mean, I really, you know,
- 59:08if you'd like, I don't do this with anybody, but I can send you
- 59:11both the script. If you'd like.
- 59:13My gosh. That's I would love that.
- 59:15I would love that, but that's that's on you.
- 59:18That's up to you. OK, now I'll send you the
- 59:20script. I'll say I just love.
- 59:22That well. We're in 'cause we should be
- 59:24together for this I. Know no, we'll have a little,
- 59:29we'll have a little session. We'll we'll read next to each
- 59:31other on Zoom. You read way faster than me.
- 59:35I do read that, but that's OK. It's OK, we'll do it together.
- 59:38My wife and I are like that. My wife reads so fast and she
- 59:41reads I don't and I go yes you do.
- 59:42We were reading earlier today together and it's like she beat
- 59:47beat me by a like a mile. She's so fast.
- 59:49But then again, that's this would be a script.
- 59:53You got to kind of savor that. That's something you got to slow
- 59:55down some reactions in the description.
- 59:58That's different. It's a different type of, yeah.
- 1:00:01I don't know. Yeah, I would love.
- 1:00:02To I say, I say yes, Lauren, yes.
- 1:00:04Yes. OK, OK.
- 1:00:06We will keep it top secret. We put Yeah, and I know.
- 1:00:09I know you would, that's why I'm asking.
- 1:00:11Oh, so we can cut this part out if you want?
- 1:00:13No, you don't. Have to cut it out.
- 1:00:14It's fine, it's fine. I want people to know that's how
- 1:00:18much I trust you there. Oh well, thanks I.
- 1:00:21Appreciate your your opinions on it and I'd love to see what you
- 1:00:24think of it. Oh, that's really nice.
- 1:00:26Thank you. No.
- 1:00:27No, you can be honest. That would be the uncomfortable
- 1:00:30part is you're like, oh, James, we read it.
- 1:00:33How about that? I just don't see that happening
- 1:00:36there. Were so many.
- 1:00:38Words on the there was, there was so many.
- 1:00:42And the words you chose were, I mean the black and white.
- 1:00:48The the white page with the black letters was really neat.
- 1:00:55Your typing skills are just really.
- 1:00:59I have to give my wife credit for that because she corrects
- 1:01:01everything I. Oh, that's me.
- 1:01:03That's me. I'm that person.
- 1:01:05Oh, are you? Yes.
- 1:01:06Yep. Do you like it?
- 1:01:08I do. Do you like I do?
- 1:01:10I love it. Yeah, I do.
- 1:01:12Now see, because I you know, when you both are on this and I
- 1:01:16watch and I listen, you're both extroverted because you have to
- 1:01:19be because it's a podcast. But are you both introvert?
- 1:01:23Extrovert. How?
- 1:01:24Like, I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:01:27I am deeply introverted. OK, I I assumed that 'cause when
- 1:01:32we met, I got that sense that you're introvert.
- 1:01:34Yeah. I'm scared to death of coming up
- 1:01:37to people and talking. Leanne.
- 1:01:38One time I was like, look, it's me.
- 1:01:40It's Nicholson. And she like, took a photo over
- 1:01:42my shoulder. I'm too afraid.
- 1:01:44It was her going, which is. Yeah, it was terrible
- 1:01:47photograph, but I, I've taught myself to get over it 'cause I,
- 1:01:52I'm sole proprietor, like self-employed.
- 1:01:55So I have lots of clients and I have no problem whatsoever being
- 1:02:00on stage or speaking in public, but I don't like that one-on-one
- 1:02:05staring into each other's eyes that I feel my introvert comes
- 1:02:09out a lot in that scenario. OK.
- 1:02:14I am technically on the line, so I I get very tired.
- 1:02:21I can be gregarious and in a group of people, but I have to,
- 1:02:24I have to like pull the plug for a day afterwards and be quiet
- 1:02:29and be alone. So I do OK extrovertedly, but
- 1:02:34then I I really have to, I need my alone time just to kind of
- 1:02:37recoup but. That's what comic cons have done
- 1:02:41to me. We go to the shows and there's
- 1:02:45thousands of people, and then there's hundreds of people to
- 1:02:48come up to the table and, you know.
- 1:02:50Hello there. How are you?
- 1:02:51Yes. Wonderful.
- 1:02:52Oh, yeah. Oh, you like Johnny Test?
- 1:02:54Oh, he's totally awesome, man. All I can do, Hiccup, from How
- 1:02:57to Train Your Dragon. Oh, you know.
- 1:02:59Well, wait a second, Doc. You know.
- 1:03:00Great. Scott, Marty, I'll go through
- 1:03:02the whole thing. And then you do that literally
- 1:03:07300 times in a day. And then you go back and you
- 1:03:10stare at the wall in your hotel room.
- 1:03:12People are like, you know, like, oh, do you write when you get
- 1:03:14into that and you're like, no, I get home, I go back.
- 1:03:17We watch Golden girls like if it's a good, The Golden Girls
- 1:03:22will have, you know what is it is on like Hallmark or and
- 1:03:25there's two different channels. There's CMT and there's Hallmark
- 1:03:27that are on and that's the first thing we look for when we get
- 1:03:30into the room. Turn it on.
- 1:03:32OK, good. CMT is on.
- 1:03:33Golden Girls goes starts at 11 and goes till 2:00 in the
- 1:03:35morning. What do you know?
- 1:03:36Comfort show. It's so easy to just turn on.
- 1:03:41Yeah, so there you go. That's me.
- 1:03:42But that, that is my unplugging because, yeah, it is a lot to
- 1:03:47do. And, and the The thing is, I
- 1:03:50truly mean it when I meet folks, I'm truly invested in their
- 1:03:53lives because again, I, there's no reason why I should be the
- 1:03:57luckiest guy in the world to do what I do.
- 1:03:59And and so it's just the grace of God.
- 1:04:02I'm so grateful that that he's given me this gift and the
- 1:04:04ability to do what I do that when people come up and go, oh,
- 1:04:07it means it's like people go, don't you get sick of saying
- 1:04:09hello there? It's like, why would I get sick
- 1:04:11of saying something that makes people happy?
- 1:04:13You know, it's like the best so. Yeah, that's nice, because
- 1:04:17sometimes you see people who do get kind of cynical about it and
- 1:04:20they don't want to be asked about things anymore.
- 1:04:23I do wonder, though, how? How it I've seen it just at your
- 1:04:27table where people come up, everyone who comes up has some
- 1:04:30like heartbreaking example of how you've helped them through.
- 1:04:35And I have one of those stories too, like the worst periods of
- 1:04:38their life and people put that on you.
- 1:04:40That must be a lot to carry in your heart.
- 1:04:44It is, yeah. Like when I say to people I'm
- 1:04:47praying for you, I mean it, you know, and I do.
- 1:04:49But it's also what a what a wonderful gift.
- 1:04:52And how fortunate am I to be able to do that?
- 1:04:55You know, it's like I but yeah, I and I think about people and
- 1:04:59and Allie and I. So when when my wife is Allison,
- 1:05:04I call her Allie. My daughter is Lydia.
- 1:05:06And when it was when Lydia was working with us, she no longer
- 1:05:09does now. The three of us would then on
- 1:05:11the way home we'd say, OK, favorite person of the day, what
- 1:05:15was the best? What was the best story?
- 1:05:17Oh, who do you love? You know, OK, did you know all
- 1:05:19that? And we still do that now, just
- 1:05:21Allison and I. But it's pretty great.
- 1:05:22And, you know, it's there's some amazing stories.
- 1:05:24There's wonderful people out there.
- 1:05:26So I can't wait. This next week, as we wrap the
- 1:05:29the year of these last two shows, we'll be in San Francisco
- 1:05:32and Columbus, OH and then and then the holidays and.
- 1:05:39And the 2026? Yeah, my daughter just moved
- 1:05:42out, so she's got her own place and and it's very exciting for
- 1:05:48her, but it is weird for us 'cause now there's.
- 1:05:50This whole. Wing of the house that is empty.
- 1:05:52So we're like, what do you do with that?
- 1:05:55So movie theater, I'm thinking. Yeah.
- 1:05:57Maybe get a pet? You know, we had a dog, his name
- 1:06:03was Elmo and and he was fantastic before.
- 1:06:08So Elmo was, he was 12 when he passed.
- 1:06:12He was he held on three months before Lydia.
- 1:06:17So we adopted Lydia from China and the three months, the first
- 1:06:21three months of Lydia being with us, Elmo hang on, held on.
- 1:06:26And then that was it. And so it was it hit my wife so
- 1:06:31hard that I go everything and she's like, I can't, I just
- 1:06:34can't. And, and, and I understand also
- 1:06:37those like animal lovers here would be going yes, but that's
- 1:06:39the reason you got to do it again.
- 1:06:41And, and I agree. So we talk about it a lot, but
- 1:06:45Oh yeah, pets are amazing so. Yeah, my parents won't get one,
- 1:06:50even though they all they've had pets.
- 1:06:52Then they had four children and my my dad, I'm like, don't you
- 1:06:55want the dog again? And every time he comes to play
- 1:06:59with my dog, he's like a little child.
- 1:07:00And he's like, no, no, I like giving the dog back to you.
- 1:07:04Yeah, I mean, I like being. Retired in an empty nest or so.
- 1:07:08There's something nice about just handing it back, right?
- 1:07:10I mean, yes, and visiting babies are.
- 1:07:13Like that too? Yes.
- 1:07:14Yeah. And I mean it's, it's for us
- 1:07:16because of the travel. It was like it just wouldn't be
- 1:07:19fair. Yep.
- 1:07:20You know, for the last many years, because we did talk.
- 1:07:23About you gotta get papers for it that say it's an emotional
- 1:07:25support animal. Well, then we can go everywhere.
- 1:07:29So, OK, So what? That's the thing.
- 1:07:31So I love, I like I am a big I was scared to death of dogs as a
- 1:07:36kid. I got bitten by dogs four times
- 1:07:38as a kid. Oh my gosh, to a Chihuahua and
- 1:07:43and then one of my best friends growing up had these two
- 1:07:46wonderful dogs. One was a chocolate lab named
- 1:07:49Misty and that dog made me love dogs and made me feel safe with
- 1:07:54dogs. So I encourage anybody watching
- 1:07:55who has kids that are afraid of dogs.
- 1:07:57It's like get them to be because once I was around them then now
- 1:08:00I love them, but I always so so Elmo was a mutt.
- 1:08:05He we got him from a a rescue and he was he was like a Jack
- 1:08:09Russell Chihuahua mix, but he was the size of a Jack Russell,
- 1:08:13but he looked he had the coloring, the tan coloring of
- 1:08:15the Chihuahua. He had the big ears, but he had
- 1:08:18all of the best qualities of both.
- 1:08:21He was a really sweet dog, very loving.
- 1:08:24He wasn't yippee, he wasn't, and my wife always said he's like
- 1:08:27you. He's tiny, but he has a big
- 1:08:29voice. So his bark was big.
- 1:08:32He. He oh wow, he was like root.
- 1:08:33Root but he was this little dog, so.
- 1:08:37I love that. That's cute.
- 1:08:39That's really cute. Do you have any pictures to
- 1:08:42share? I you know.
- 1:08:44I mean, not to put you on the spot now, but at any time have
- 1:08:46you ever shared a photo of? I don't know if I've ever posted
- 1:08:51him or anything on on Instagram. I I guess I should.
- 1:08:55Well, I was. Just going to dig a family album
- 1:08:57out somewhere I. Mean if it's trouble, don't
- 1:09:00worry about it. But I was just saying.
- 1:09:01Yeah, no, I need to. I I will send you, I'll send you
- 1:09:03a picture. OK.
- 1:09:06And I have recordings of him barking.
- 1:09:08Actually, I, I worked in radio at the time and I worked in
- 1:09:12radio comedy. And so I would write, voice,
- 1:09:14produce and record comedy bits for radio stations across the
- 1:09:17country, everybody from Rick DS and Howard Stern to all in
- 1:09:21between. And so I would record these fake
- 1:09:25commercials and comedy bits, and anytime we needed a dog, a sound
- 1:09:29effect, I would have. And Elmo was great at taking
- 1:09:31commands. And so I would do these and then
- 1:09:34I could, if I needed to be even bigger, I could pitch the voice
- 1:09:37down and Oh yeah. Sure, sure.
- 1:09:41But oh, but OK, so here's what I did do.
- 1:09:44I'm giving you all this is you have to know I I'm giving you
- 1:09:48all like we're just this is just like hanging out with James.
- 1:09:50It is that's that's the beauty. We're going to talk about you.
- 1:09:53I'm sorry but. No, we were just wanted to talk
- 1:09:56to you. Yeah, that's all.
- 1:09:57I would make movies because it was at the time, it was in the
- 1:10:0090s, early 2000s, early 2000s, when I got my first iMac, which
- 1:10:05was that, you know. Yeah.
- 1:10:08And you could plug a camera in. An iMovie was new and you could
- 1:10:11make movies. So I would make Christmas movies
- 1:10:14with Elmo and it was Elmo's Christmas.
- 1:10:16Oh, I love that. So maybe what I'll do is I'll
- 1:10:20send you both a link to see Elmo's Christmas that.
- 1:10:23Would be amazing. That's that's great and a good
- 1:10:29way to honor Elmo too. That's right.
- 1:10:32And and how much I spoiled him, actually, because he's good
- 1:10:35about him opening all of his Christmas presents.
- 1:10:38Oh. So it is, it is literally him
- 1:10:41opening, you know, tons of Christmas.
- 1:10:43I love that a lot. We do that with our dog too.
- 1:10:46Even our family gives gifts to the animals.
- 1:10:49Oh, yeah, that's a must. It's a must, yeah.
- 1:10:53They know when there's a present coming they can smell.
- 1:10:56It they do it all. Goes.
- 1:10:58Yes, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:11:00So now all of that then to say the holidays are upon us, Yes.
- 1:11:04What then is, do you have your traditions?
- 1:11:07Do you have like holiday traditions, both of you?
- 1:11:09No, yeah. Yes we do.
- 1:11:11In my family, we always do Thanksgiving and then the next
- 1:11:14day we meet up and go buy Christmas trees together and
- 1:11:17it's like the kick off of the Christmas season.
- 1:11:20I like that, I approve. Give Thanksgiving it's due,
- 1:11:25right? That's right, it's my favorite
- 1:11:27holiday. Me too, James.
- 1:11:29Now they're putting Halloween up in like July, so I just, I
- 1:11:35can't. I think I probably you may have
- 1:11:38met. I think I mentioned on my
- 1:11:39podcast, my neighbors across the street, the day after Halloween,
- 1:11:44they put up their Christmas lights.
- 1:11:45That's crazy. And we have a glass door that is
- 1:11:50our front door has a big glass window.
- 1:11:52So everywhere I go in my house, I see these Christmas lights.
- 1:11:56And it actually, I'm not a Scrooge, but it does drive me
- 1:12:00crazy. Oh, I got you.
- 1:12:03Because I love because I, I love Thanksgiving.
- 1:12:08So it's like, I want to celebrate Thanksgiving.
- 1:12:10And if I'm seeing Christmas right here, you're getting in
- 1:12:13the way. My Thanksgiving, man.
- 1:12:14Yeah, I'm just sad. Like each holiday to have its
- 1:12:20due. And yes, yeah, yeah, my family
- 1:12:24always, always did Thanksgiving, did the Thanksgiving thing first
- 1:12:29and then Christmas. And I come from a very large
- 1:12:32Italian family. So for Christmas we did the
- 1:12:35Feast of the Seven Fishes, which is pretty traditional, 7
- 1:12:39different seafood, fish related dishes.
- 1:12:41And then it's kind of a big deal.
- 1:12:43Everyone had their part in the kitchen, in my grandmother's
- 1:12:46kitchen. Yeah, it was.
- 1:12:48It was pretty special. Now you know I'm a Italian on on
- 1:12:51my mom's side, I'm Italian. Yeah, right on.
- 1:12:53No. Awesome.
- 1:12:55Yes. It was right on.
- 1:12:56Very nice. Yeah.
- 1:12:57I'm. I'm full.
- 1:12:59I'm full on both sides. And what's interesting is my my
- 1:13:03mom and dad met in. I mean, they were high school
- 1:13:06sweethearts and they rode the bus together because my mom's
- 1:13:09side and my dad's side live on the same street.
- 1:13:11So it's very easy for me at Christmas just to walk to the
- 1:13:14other house. When that family got annoying, I
- 1:13:16would walk then to the other house and then just go back and
- 1:13:19forth. So it was.
- 1:13:21That was awesome. Very convenient, yeah, But it
- 1:13:24was. Yeah, it was cool.
- 1:13:25Do you know what my? Parents were high school
- 1:13:27sweethearts. Also, did we ever talk?
- 1:13:29About this, I don't know that we have, I don't know.
- 1:13:31And did you know that my wife and I are high school
- 1:13:33sweethearts? I love them.
- 1:13:34Are you really? This is great.
- 1:13:36This. Now I feel like if people fall
- 1:13:39in love in high school, I'm like, Are you sure?
- 1:13:42But back then people were more mature, I think.
- 1:13:45I think so. Oh, that's so nice.
- 1:13:48There we go. Yeah, we met in marching band I.
- 1:13:51Oh great. Do you know what I play?
- 1:13:53Do you know what instrument? I play.
- 1:13:54I was going to ask. I don't, I don't know.
- 1:13:56This is tricky. See if you can figure out,
- 1:13:59didn't you? You said your wife stood behind
- 1:14:02you, right? We I was actually the marching
- 1:14:05instructor. She was a underclassman.
- 1:14:07She was two years behind me. Oh, so I actually taught her how
- 1:14:11to March and so. Did you play it like drums or
- 1:14:15did you play like saxophone? I'm guessing trumpet, Saxophone.
- 1:14:19Saxophone. OK, saxophone is amazing, Yeah.
- 1:14:22Yeah, so I played Alto and tenor do.
- 1:14:26You still play. No, not as much as I should, as
- 1:14:29much as I should. My wife played flute and
- 1:14:31piccolo. Love Piccolo?
- 1:14:34I'm sure you had a great ombre. Sure, and that's why you're also
- 1:14:37a great voice actors part. There you go.
- 1:14:41Yeah, so and, and then in my early 20s when I was a DJI, also
- 1:14:45played in a lot of bar bands and stuff.
- 1:14:47And so nice. Huey Lewis in excess and all
- 1:14:50any, any of the 80's rock bands that had saxophones in it,
- 1:14:53they'd have me come up and play, you know the.
- 1:14:56Very nice. Yeah, I actually do.
- 1:14:59You know the band Toad the Wet Sprocket.
- 1:15:01Yes. No.
- 1:15:02Yeah, yes. So they are from my hometown of
- 1:15:04Santa Barbara and Todd and Glenn, and they, before they
- 1:15:07became Toad the Wet Sprocket, when it was just them writing
- 1:15:09songs and stuff, they actually had me come over and play a
- 1:15:12couple of saxophone parts for some songs they were working on.
- 1:15:18Claim to fame with that. Oh.
- 1:15:19Cool. Yeah, I wasn't very good.
- 1:15:21That's the problem is so they probably when they did told the
- 1:15:25Wet Spark, they're like we're not doing any saxophone.
- 1:15:27So I I just have to ask because Clarence Clemons, the
- 1:15:32saxophonist for E Street Band, could you do the Jungle Land
- 1:15:37solo? If if asked, could you do any of
- 1:15:40the any of the famous big man saxophone?
- 1:15:43Yeah. You know, The funny thing is I
- 1:15:45do remember some of the hooks that we would because at that
- 1:15:48time, yeah, you know, I was in school.
- 1:15:50It was very big and yeah, and then like cause and then at
- 1:15:53Christmas time, Springsteen's, you know, Santa Claus is coming.
- 1:15:56To town, yes. And he had the little, you know,
- 1:16:02you have to. So when you play and you play
- 1:16:04like Clarence Clemons or Lenny Pickett or any of these guys
- 1:16:07that David Sanborn, there's this kind of, you know, they make the
- 1:16:09saxophone kind of growl. They do how they do that.
- 1:16:13No. You actually growl in your
- 1:16:16throat. I was a percussionist, so I I
- 1:16:20can play nothing. I'm I'm the only one in my
- 1:16:23family who doesn't play an instrument.
- 1:16:24My mom played clarinet and my dad played Trump, but because my
- 1:16:28mom was in jazz band, she had to learn saxophone also.
- 1:16:31Absolutely. Nice, because I was in jazz
- 1:16:33band. They met in band like you and
- 1:16:35your wife. That is so cute.
- 1:16:40That's amazing. I didn't meet anybody in band
- 1:16:44when I was in it clearly. I wasn't even in band.
- 1:16:48I was in choir, but not. Bad.
- 1:16:49I was in choir as well. I was the only female who did a
- 1:16:53full drum set. Good for you.
- 1:16:55Yeah, at the time. Well, I hope I haven't taken up
- 1:16:59too much of. You.
- 1:16:59Oh my goodness, please, I told you.
- 1:17:01Never. Please.
- 1:17:03But it's been fun. This has been amazing.
- 1:17:07Are you standing? So you're like, can I please sit
- 1:17:10down now? No, I mean, I stand if I'm doing
- 1:17:15a so if so, that's my, you know, my voice over Booth right there
- 1:17:18behind the team. Poster.
- 1:17:20Yeah. And I stand for sessions there,
- 1:17:24and I stand for four hours. Amazing in.
- 1:17:26One spot with headphones on. I mean my.
- 1:17:29Stuff. So I'm very used to it.
- 1:17:31I'm I'm a stander. Just before we go yes, yes.
- 1:17:35Do we want to give them some rapid fires?
- 1:17:38Yes, sure. Yeah, let's do it.
- 1:17:39That's great. We did this last time, but we
- 1:17:41switched up the questions. OK, would you rather wear a Cape
- 1:17:46or a poncho? A Cape A.
- 1:17:51Cape. A Cape, hands down.
- 1:17:54Exactly. Absolute.
- 1:17:56I thought of you, Leanne, when I wrote that.
- 1:17:58Is there a particular Cape in Star Wars that you favor?
- 1:18:02It could be Landos, it could be Vaders, it could be Chronics, it
- 1:18:05could be anybody's. There's many capes and.
- 1:18:10They all have those, like the little chain, you know, and
- 1:18:12thing. And yeah, it's curious.
- 1:18:14To me, that seems like that would annoy me.
- 1:18:17Now I've I've worn a Lando Cape because Billy Dee and I are
- 1:18:21friends and on stage I would, I would put on the Billy Dee Cape
- 1:18:24and the mustache. We would do pictures and stuff
- 1:18:27together. And I find it that while it
- 1:18:30looks great, you have to be as cool as Billy Dee to pull that
- 1:18:33off. You know, because it's.
- 1:18:36There is a certain Billy Dee to it.
- 1:18:38You know there's a Billy Dee Ness of some sort.
- 1:18:43So I don't know. I've always, I like, like the,
- 1:18:46you know, Doctor Strange Cape. Oh, that's, that's a good one.
- 1:18:49Actually. That's a good one.
- 1:18:51Collar's up. Oh yeah, they yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:53You know what, if Obi Wan could get a collar up version of that
- 1:18:59he would be. He would be even cooler than
- 1:19:01Lando I think. Don't you think that if Obi Wan
- 1:19:03wore a Cape it would be that kind?
- 1:19:05It would be. You got it, Yes, Yeah.
- 1:19:08It would be just so cool. People's heads would just
- 1:19:11explode. So we.
- 1:19:12Especially if we had the mullet. If the mullet sat on the on the
- 1:19:17popped up Cape and it would. Do this you know.
- 1:19:19Mullet Obi Wan? Why not?
- 1:19:21Anyway, next question, yes. All right, this one was inspired
- 1:19:27by our patron Adela, who asked us this question.
- 1:19:30Would you rather fight an Ewok sized Wookiee or a Wookiee sized
- 1:19:34Ewok? Oh my goodness, they're both
- 1:19:37tenacious. I'm going to, I'm going to hope
- 1:19:45that the Wookiee sized Ewok might be so like, what am I
- 1:19:51doing? They wouldn't have the same
- 1:19:53fighting skills as a Wookiee that is a Ewok size because.
- 1:20:01Every Wookiee at one point was Ewok size.
- 1:20:04Oh, that's a good point. Too very smart.
- 1:20:08I never got that right now. That's a whole Obi Wan.
- 1:20:13Big brain on Obi Wan, yes. Next question, who's your
- 1:20:20favorite set of friends in Star Wars?
- 1:20:22I I'm thinking the trio now. I know you might be biased.
- 1:20:25I know you might be biased. I am, I mean, you know, well,
- 1:20:29like characters or people, I mean, like, 'cause you know,
- 1:20:32Matt and Ashley and I, we are. And then Cat joins us and that's
- 1:20:36right, but. I'm thinking characters.
- 1:20:40Lauren wrote this question, so I'll default to her if you have
- 1:20:44a specific. I was thinking characters, but
- 1:20:46it could be whatever you, you're, I was.
- 1:20:48Thinking characters. I I like Jabba and you know dude
- 1:20:53with the. Salacious Crumb.
- 1:20:58Salacious Crumb and then, but also his his guy, his right hand
- 1:21:01man with the. Please do the imitation, Lauren.
- 1:21:04Lauren does the please. Lauren does?
- 1:21:08Yeah, she does. One voice and one voice.
- 1:21:09OK. I want to hear you got to.
- 1:21:11Hear it but I will Taco to Jabba now that's I don't do that's.
- 1:21:14One voice. When she's really annoyed and
- 1:21:17she goes Taco to Jabba now she goes.
- 1:21:19She doesn't really. Want.
- 1:21:24I put you on the spot. That was so magical when I was a
- 1:21:28kid and you saw that. That was the first.
- 1:21:30That's the opening Return of the Jedi.
- 1:21:32It was amazing. And then you know that you will
- 1:21:34take me to Jabba now. And you know, Luke Skywalker is
- 1:21:38the coolest. Year.
- 1:21:39Yes, yes. Yes.
- 1:21:41Oh my gosh. And then that guy, yeah.
- 1:21:43And Jabba's mad at that dude because he's weak minded.
- 1:21:47I think I watched my VHS tape of that scene so much it got a
- 1:21:51crease in it and I always knew right where to stop or want.
- 1:21:55I have his action figures still from when I was a kid.
- 1:21:58I still. Oh wow.
- 1:21:59Very. Nice cool one, yeah, but OK, so
- 1:22:02no. And that's my comedy answer to
- 1:22:04it. But I get.
- 1:22:06It works. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:09Yeah. OK.
- 1:22:11Yeah. Is that a friendship though?
- 1:22:14I'm not sure if that's an abusive relationship.
- 1:22:16Absolutely. That's all our rapid fires.
- 1:22:22That's it, That's all we had. I know.
- 1:22:25What's your favorite Christmas movie?
- 1:22:28My favorite Christmas movie. Oh my goodness.
- 1:22:31See, the one we want all the time is I Love Actually.
- 1:22:37Oh. I love that movie.
- 1:22:38That's my. Favorite.
- 1:22:40Yeah, don't. Mean it kills me, though I know
- 1:22:42some people be like James. It's not very you know, it's
- 1:22:45it's very R rated It's but it's I don't know it's it's it's a
- 1:22:49great movie. You know what I I love the
- 1:22:52filmmaker that made that movie. Is it, what is his name?
- 1:22:57Curtis. But he makes great movies.
- 1:23:00He made about time. Did we ever talk about it about
- 1:23:03time? Have you ever seen that?
- 1:23:05He. Might have with.
- 1:23:06With Dominic Gleason, you know, from he's the he's the lead
- 1:23:13about Time is a beautiful movie made by the same guy that made
- 1:23:17Love Actually. And what I love about his movies
- 1:23:20is there's no like the third act doesn't always have this like,
- 1:23:24horrible thing that happens. Sometimes it's just life
- 1:23:27happens. And and yet it's still the
- 1:23:29characters and and it's there's loveliness and there's.
- 1:23:32So yeah, I, I love Love. Actually, I too.
- 1:23:35I think it's a really important message too, especially now that
- 1:23:38Love Actually is all around. Yeah.
- 1:23:41And we do our Hugh Grant impression, you know that Hugh
- 1:23:45Grant impression when he's walking through and he goes hi.
- 1:23:49Yeah. And then he and then he looks.
- 1:23:52Like he's like, what? Am I an idiot?
- 1:23:56Hi. Do you do the dancing?
- 1:23:59Yeah, the dance. Do you?
- 1:24:00Do you do that in your house when no one's looking and you
- 1:24:02got the music on? Yeah.
- 1:24:06I don't know if I listen to, you know, the pointer.
- 1:24:09Sisters. Oh no, but I mean.
- 1:24:11I listen to, you know, the Red Hot Chili Peppers singing higher
- 1:24:13ground, but it's the same, same dance.
- 1:24:16It works. It works.
- 1:24:18We were laughing the other day. Why is Oh 'cause Flea is in the
- 1:24:23Kenobi series and his concho is just so bright and colorful?
- 1:24:28It is. All laughing, yeah.
- 1:24:30So as much as I appreciate him being there, that's the thing
- 1:24:34that I don't get. So fleas in it, but I wasn't.
- 1:24:38No. Come.
- 1:24:40On we won Kenobi's snot in it, but flea how?
- 1:24:43Cool. Would it have been, you know,
- 1:24:44for me to be an alien in the background and go on?
- 1:24:47Hello there. I I would think of Boudaba now.
- 1:24:53You're going to think of me now every time you hear that.
- 1:24:58I love it. This has been so delightful and
- 1:25:02I so appreciate you both. And that's just you.
- 1:25:04You do what a podcast is about. You share, you laugh, you love
- 1:25:10you spread that out to all of your fans and the people that
- 1:25:13are are your patrons and the people that listen.
- 1:25:16And that's why I've always been so, so happy to be a part of it
- 1:25:19and, and all, and I just thank you because you do what what
- 1:25:22Matt and Ashley and I try to do as well, just love Star Wars, be
- 1:25:25a part of it and have fun with it and talk about it with other
- 1:25:27people. So.
- 1:25:29Yeah. That's really it.
- 1:25:30Oh, we want approves. Oh, that.
- 1:25:32Means a lot. That is the highest of praise.
- 1:25:36Thank you. And and, you know, you're just
- 1:25:40so genuine and it really, really shows.
- 1:25:42And having you on is like having a friend.
- 1:25:45If we could say that, you know, we.
- 1:25:46Yeah. Absolutely.
- 1:25:47Well, we are absolutely friends. Kind of recently we do a, a, a
- 1:25:51segment for our patrons called mindfulness with MTK and we
- 1:25:56spend a little time talking about being mindful and being
- 1:25:59thankful and grateful. And the last thing that we did
- 1:26:01was three things we're grateful for.
- 1:26:04And Lauren upstaged me and said the podcast and and I didn't
- 1:26:08upstaged. You, I was grateful for you and
- 1:26:13for Obi Wan for bringing us all. Together.
- 1:26:17And that's really you, James, 'cause it was the Clone Wars
- 1:26:20version of Obi Wan. I didn't even like Obi Wan until
- 1:26:23I watched Clone Wars and it was you and your performance.
- 1:26:27And that's what made us friends, Leanne.
- 1:26:30And I is it really is actually. You're the start of the ripple
- 1:26:33and it just goes from there. So thank you for all of that.
- 1:26:38Well, it's very incredibly humbling.
- 1:26:41As a voice actor, you kind of your job is to kind of blend
- 1:26:44into the background and let the character be and all of that.
- 1:26:48But the other thing it does is being involved in a franchise as
- 1:26:51big as Star Wars for so many years.
- 1:26:52And when you have someone as big as, say, Ewan McGregor or, or
- 1:26:56Sir Allen Guinness, but certainly Ewan McGregor, you
- 1:26:59know, I, I kind of, I don't ever think of myself as a real part
- 1:27:05of it. I think of like the lucky kid
- 1:27:07that got to play over here and, and he's getting away with it.
- 1:27:11Like, you know, it's that that imposter syndrome, I guess they
- 1:27:14call it. But so I really appreciate that.
- 1:27:18And it is it's when I go to the shows and people say, Oh yeah, I
- 1:27:22grew up with Clone Wars. So, you know, I go like, well,
- 1:27:25that's, that's amazing. So how lucky am I?
- 1:27:28Luckiest guy on the planet, so thank you in the bottom of my
- 1:27:31heart. You are greatly appreciated and
- 1:27:33and loved and we can't thank you enough for just being a friend
- 1:27:39of ours and being a friend of the show, truly.
- 1:27:41Yeah, and always being generous with your time.
- 1:27:43And you know, we try not to irritate you with tagging you in
- 1:27:48too much. Stuff No, it's good.
- 1:27:49Please always do yeah, because I'm I'm not always on Instagram.
- 1:27:53I went for a time where I wasn't on a lot over this time where we
- 1:27:57were moving our daughter and everything too.
- 1:27:59And I was like, Oh my gosh, I got to get back on.
- 1:28:00And then that's of course I get to see Dark Obi Wan.
- 1:28:04Well, we had to. We had to.
- 1:28:06Yeah, and you know, it's I did. I did various versions of that.
- 1:28:10Hello there. And I'm I've liked the one they
- 1:28:12landed on. But yeah, hello there.
- 1:28:15So sassy. All the texturing you did with
- 1:28:17it was it was great. Our friend, our patron.
- 1:28:22I hope so. Like just give you your own
- 1:28:24animated Obi Wan shows. Like I said, it's like CNN but
- 1:28:28for Obi Wan. It's like.
- 1:28:30All day. I like that all Obi Wan all.
- 1:28:35Day I so appreciate you both I really do and I thank you so
- 1:28:37much and Leanne tell your mom I said hello I know I.
- 1:28:40Absolutely will. I will point her to this when it
- 1:28:42comes out. Oh, actually, I might let
- 1:28:44literally into it kind of early, but I'll tell her I'm going to
- 1:28:47call her as soon as this is over.
- 1:28:49OK. And be fair, Lauren.
- 1:28:52Tell your folks hi. And from one childhood
- 1:28:54sweetheart with his wife to another marching band, Yes.
- 1:28:58Thank you, I will. Well, my best to all of you and,
- 1:29:02and for a beautiful, wonderful Thanksgiving, a Merry Merry
- 1:29:05Christmas, a Happy New Year, and I'm going to send you my script
- 1:29:09so you can read it. Thank you.
- 1:29:11Christmas is Comer on earth. Thanks James.
- 1:29:14Thank you so much. Thank.
- 1:29:15You so much, James. And the only way I can end it is
- 1:29:18the way I begin it. Why with instead of?
- 1:29:19Hello there. It's goodbye there.
- 1:29:28We'd like to thank James once again for taking time out of his
